Business Website Case Study

Firstly many thanks to those of you who completed the business website poll.
As a result I learned that most of you are building either a service website or
consultancy site.

The requirements for these sites is almost identical and as a result I have
updated a two part case study based on a site I built for a friend a few years
ago who has a patent drawing business.

I will be doing a series of case studies were I will go through the process of creating a few example
business sites from scratch and they will appear in the newsletter.

Keywords

Question-what are keywords?
Answer- Keywords are the words used by searchers at the search engines. If you think of how you go about finding something on the Internet what is the first step? For many they go to Google and type in a search query. The words that make up this query are the Keywords. e.g. if I was looking for a cement mixer I would go to Google and type

• Cement mixer
• Petrol Cement mixer
• Electric Cement mixer
• 100l Cement mixer
• second hand Cement
  mixer
• etc

All these are keywords. By knowing what keywords searchers are using you can tailor your PPC (pay per
click) campaigns and optimise your web pages and website.

Domain Names

Question-why to register a domain name? and where to register a domain name?

Answer-If you want your own website or email address then you need to get a domain name. The domain name is your online identity.

You can of course use someone else’s domain name. Google, Yahoo and MSN all provide free email services and you get to use their domain name as part of your email address. So you have an email address of
:myemailaddress@gmail.com.

The problem is it isn’t yours and if Google decide to charge for it in the future or they might just stop doing it all together.

If this sounds alarmist you may have heard of geocities. This was a free hosting service bought by
Yahoo for $3.6bilion back in 1999 and used by millions to host personal and business sites all using the Geocities Domain name and guess what they are closing!

So all those sites are going to have to move and all of the links pointing to those sites will become  worthless.

To Register a domain name I recommend you use your hosting provider and I use Blue Host and
One and One-UK depending on my target audience.

All websites start out from a single page- The site template. There are many different types of template and you can either make your own, use a free one or even pay for one.

If you hire a web designer he will design your template. However before you do any of those it is important to have a basic understanding of the technologies involved and what you should look out for. Continued.

Although I have had information on affiliate marketing/programs on the site for years I haven’t updated it for a long time. However in response to many questions I though it was time to take a new look at the money making side of the site.

Web Page Naming

Choosing a name for you web pages isn’t difficult but it does involve a basic
understanding of some Internet conventions and how names are used. It doesn’t
take long to find pages on the web with bad page names because the site owner
didn’t either take the time or didn’t understand the importance of the page
names themselves.

Although the blog mania has subsided and moved to twitter there is still many good reasons to choose to blog.

A blog is not a substitute for a website but depending on what you want to do it can be used instead of one. To decide you really need to understand the difference between them and when/why they are used.

Understanding Web space on 1 and 1

If you have web hosting from 1and1 UK then the first thing you will need to do is to organise your web space. If you do it incorrectly from the start then it will be difficult to change at a later date.

Your Web space is in effect a folder on a 1and1 server and like any folder it can contain files and other folders.

Because it is the root of your web space and you cannot go above it it is designated as the root with a / sign. Full article.

Checking For Broken Links

Search engines and visitors find pages through links.

Because the web is constantly changing and sites/pages are being moved and removed it is inevitable that over time your site will contain broken links either inbound to your site of external to your site.

It is important that you periodically check your site for broken links and correct them. Full article

So I thought I would just like to point out a few personal experiences from my last 5/6 years on the internet.

Firstly I do earn all my income from the Internet and although not huge it is presently enough to live on.

I don’t consider myself a expert at making money on the Internet, and maybe if I were I could make much more.

I have over the last 6 years bought many ebooks that promised to show me how to make maximise my income from affiliate programs or Adsense and although some have been well written none (in the last 3 years) have shown me anything that I didn’t already know.

There is enough good free information available/low cost on the Internet without having to splash out on $100+ info courses that teach you things that you will probably never use, or if you do, you will soon get bored with it.

I have two main sites that provide most of my income and I enjoy working on them today, even after 6 years. I have tried to develop a few others that I thought would be good income earners but I lacked enthusiasm for the topics and they have long since been retired.

So if I was to give one tip to anyone starting out and looking to make an income from a website, it is simply to create a website on a subject that you really enjoy, create useful quality content and worry about the money later on.

It may make you a bit of money, a lot of money or anything in between but at least you will get  satisfaction from it.

Whatever you do don’t believe that someone is going to let you into the killer secret that will make you lots of money while you play volleyball on the beach.

There isn’t a secret formula, and if there was if they let you know about it,as it wouldn’t be a secret.

In the coming months you will no doubt receive many enticing offers, and  as tempting as the offers appear I would urge you to be cautious.

It is possible to make money online. It is possible to make a living. However it does take work and it does take time.
