Each year as November rolls around, you might notice many affiliate marketers begin to get a certain spring to their step.  They smile at the neighbors, tip more generously at restaurants, and surprise significant others with fresh flowers.

Is it just the magic of the holiday season?  The crisp air, idyllic decorations, and plentiful sweets?

Or… Maybe it has something to do with this:

You see, as it turns out, people buy a lot of stuff online in late November and December. A LOT of stuff.

So for internet marketers who make their living as a retail affiliate (product reviews, coupon sites, deals sites, price comparison, etc.), November and December can sometimes constitute half of their total earnings for the year. This is particularly true of sites that affiliate with major retailers like Amazon, where you may refer a customer to a $0.99 ebook who then goes on to purchase $700 of Christmas presents or Black Friday deals, which Amazon generously shares with you.

In fact, November and December are so good for ecommerce affiliate, that you should look for ways to add an ecommerce affiliate component to your content during these months, even if it’s not your primary business. Just look at everyone from TechCrunch to Surfer Magazine touting their Holiday Gift Guides. Does the world really need thousands of articles telling us how to choose the right Christmas present for our kid’s math teacher, which brand of diaper cake new Moms are hoping to see under the tree this year, or which passport holder frequent business travelers will truly cherish? Christmas gift idea lists are so popular with media because they are hugely important to advertisers (or affiliate revenue), not readers.

Now that you know how much is at stake this season, here are some tips for how you can carve out a chunk of the holiday spending bonanza this year, and bring yourself a sweeter New Year in 2013:

• Choose to affiliate with a large ecommerce store that is likely to attract a lot of Christmas shoppers. Your goal is not to sell one product; it’s to get a piece of buyers’ gift-buying sprees.
• More is better. Again, because you’re trying to get a piece of holiday shopping that’s happening anyway, you want to reach as many people as possible. You’ll do much better promoting $5 products to 10,000 people than you will $500 products to 100 people.
• What are your readers’ unique needs during the holiday season? For example, if you own a site that offers reviews of yoga DVDs, perhaps you can offer a list of eco-friendly gift ideas for yoga enthusiasts. If you run a parenting blog, consider advising parents on educational toys they can put under the tree.
• Remember, most of the online shopping happens on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the several days before and after. Make sure your content is in place before Thanksgiving, and that you continue to post content with affiliate links right through the first week of December.
• For those whose revenue is primarily ecommerce-based, now is a great time to splurge on some extra promotion. AdWords will be expensive, but why not boost your organic SEO with a free month of category sponsorship at BOTW, or up your guest posting?
• Who spends most on Christmas presents? Middle-upper income American moms. That’s your key target demographic
• Look for ways to expand your audience. Even if you don’t have a popular website, look for ways to integrate your affiliate links into content you share with your email list, Twitter followers, or even Facebook friends. Volume of purchases are so high around key shopping days that referring a small number of people can still generate reasonable revenue.

"Make money online" gurus love to show screenshots of their ClickBank account. But how much did it cost to generate all those sales?

But they conveniently neglect to mention that they also spent thousands of dollars a day buying advertisements to drive the traffic that created those sales. Sometimes they run businesses at a loss just to create those inflated sales figures!

And of course you probably know that virtually no testimonial, review, or recommendation in the online money making niche is ever given spontaneously, unsolicited, or out of a genuine enthusiasm for the product being pitched. Most top online marketers know each other well, and spend a lot of time living it up together at lavish conferences in La Jolla or Vegas or the Caribbean. So when they need a favorable review or some free promotion in a newsletter, they can call on that network and “keep it all in the family”, so to speak.

The bottom line is that internet marketing gurus are simply brilliant sales people. They understand all of the psychological “loopholes” (check out Cialdini’s classic Influence if you don’t know what I’m talking about) that make purchasing their product virtually irresistible. The unfortunate bit is that such stunning sales talent is rarely matched to the technical and analytical skills necessary to actually create a high quality, useful product.

4. Adobe Premiere Elements for PC and Mac

Adobe’s Premeire Elements has a very intuitive user interface. It makes editing and rendering videos a snap, but the problem comes in if you don’t have a particularly powerful computer. This program is a major resource hog. It’s flexible and very capable, but those capabilities will stretch your system.

5. Final Cut Express for Mac

The intro version of Final Cut, Final Cut Express boasts the sleek user interface that has caused many users of Final Cut to fall in love with this program.

At $165, this is the most expensive of the entry-level video software that we’ve looked at here. However, Final Cut Express will enable you to create solid videos with ease. The program runs smoothly and makes editing and rendering very easy while still providing lots of functionality.

Before you pour tons of time, effort and money into any online endeavor, it’s extremely important that you scout out your options and select the one that offers you the best chance of succeeding.

A niche is a small segment of a market. There are specific qualities to look for in any niche where you are considering starting an online business.

Let’s take a look at four important things to look out for as you select a niche.

1. Potential Customers

If you’re going to dive into a niche, you better be sure that there are hungry customers ready to pay to solve their problems within the niche.

Niches come in large and small sizes. They range from extraordinarily narrow and specific to extremely large and encompassing.

While there is no single rule of thumb to apply when pinpointing a niche, it’s important to make sure that you select a niche where there are enough potential buyers to sustain your business. If you go too narrow, you risk appealing to an overly small group of people.

On the other hand, if you target a larger, nonspecific market, you run the risk of being drowned out by much larger and more entrenched competitors.

Here’s a good way to test any potential niche: go to a bookstore and peruse the magazine section. Look for magazines related to the niche you want to go into. If you find several magazines targeting your niche, that’s a good sign—it means there are enough customers in the niche to support each of those magazines, and it means there are advertisers willing to pay to get their products in front of the eyeballs of all those magazine readers.

2. Survey Your Competitors

Notice, also, the level of the competition for the keywords you search for that relate to your niche. The holy grail of online search terms would be a heavily trafficked keyword that doesn’t have much competition.

Those are extraordinarily rare these days, though. Instead, accept a healthy amount of competition for the keywords that relate most specifically to your chosen niche.

Don’t underestimate the power or usefulness of the keyword tool to help you get a handle on where the action is in your niche.

4. Your Level of Interest

Depending on your business philosophy, you might want to begin with this point in how to go about identifying a viable niche.

If you don’t have passion for a given niche, then you’re going to be less likely to push through the inevitable challenges and roadblocks that crop up on the way to success online.

It really helps if you are interested in the niche you focus on.

So, as you narrow down potential niche candidates in relation to the other criteria mentioned above, keep your own level of interest in mind each step of the way.

Angel investors and other former entrepreneurs are often willing to help foster the next generation of entrepreneurs.
