In a recent interview with Carrie Keagan on Big Morning Buzz, actress/model/train-wreck Paz de la Huerta shows viewers she is not exactly "a morning person," if you can even call it that.

Perhaps it was Carrie Keegan's annoyingly peppy attitude that only made the actress seem like a complete and utter snooze fest, or maybe it was because she was still battling that (no doubt) nasty hangover from her notorious Golden Globes/Chateau Marmont blunder (Google for epic sloppy-drunk fall/Tara Reid-reminiscent boob slippage). Either way, the oddball Boardwalk Empire star with the tainted track record seemed a bit off and well, sleepy.

Watch as she awkwardly struggles to get out one tiny sentence while keeping her eyes open. The results are pretty brutal.

Side note: I totally dig her sweater.

While rummaging through the various cabinets and drawers I have stuffed with makeup, I came across a little piece of nostalgia: my little 'bag 'o goodies' as I called it from my days as a beauty intern/assistant at NYLON.

Inside, I found a collection of all sorts of beauty items, all ranging in purpose, brand and price. Sitting right on top was one particular forgotten--rather, completely disregarded--compact powder palette by Dior called Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Sculpting Powder SPF 10 in Biege Praline 020. I received it after it was shot for one of the "Get This" spreads in the magazine. When I first got it, I didn't really pay much attention to it and carelessly tossed it into my makeup goodie bag, thinking when am I ever going to use a generic powder palette? They always seemed a tad gimmicky to me and from what I recall, never really did anything too redeeming. Turns out, this one is very different.

As I opened the lid, I found three beautiful press-powdered swatches, a soft-bristled mini application brush and a rather large inner lid mirror. The main purpose for this trifold color palette is for sculpting--typically, the cheeks- hence, the three different pigmented powders. On top, is a pearly pink swatch that is to be used for highlighting the cheekbones. The middle section consists of a beautiful light rose-colored blush that is to be placed on the apples of the cheeks to brighten up the face. The last section, which also happens to be the biggest, is a nude-colored powder that is to be dusted all over the face for a sheer, natural cover.

When I was done inspecting the palette, I put it down, once again neglecting it, and began my usual makeup routine for the day. For some strange reason, my makeup just wasn't coming out the way I wanted it too, for it was a bit streaky and spotty looking. I needed a little dab of something to help smooth out my foundation, but without caking up what I had already applied. That's when I reached for my Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Sculpting Powder SPF 10. With just a few gentle strokes of the brush, my once streaky coverup instantly turned into a sleek, luminous surface. The stuff did the job, and better than I ever could have imagined! It glided on very smooth and left my skin feeling silky and fresh.

Throughout the day I kept checking in the mirror to see how well the powder held up and each time I did, I saw the same flawless, even-toned complexion from that morning. I also noticed that Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Sculpting Powder SPF 10 does wonders for controlling shine, which is a common complaint of mine. Furthermore, I found that this powder also made my makeup feel lighter and softer than usual.

The only downside to this product is that it's rather bulky, being approximately 2" X 3"which makes traveling with it a bit of a problem. I found that this product did not fit in my travel makeup case, so I was forced to leave it home which may be the more intelligent way to go since it's a powder palette that can easily break into a million little pieces with the slightest nudge (and I think we all know just how annoying that mess is to clean up).

Also, breaking this little beauty box wouldn't be the wisest thing to do since it's priced at a whopping $50. Fortunately, I received mine as a gift and therefore didn't have to pay the hefty sum, but if and when I run out of mine, purchasing another may take some consideration even if this palette does do a great job.

Lastly, since the Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Sculpting Powder SPF 10 contains SPF 10 just as the title mentions, it's a great for a quick fix of sun screen and sheer coverage when on the go.

A Review: MAKE UP FOR EVER'S "HD Invisible Cover Foundation"

MAKE UP FOR EVER'S award-winning HD Invisible Cover Foundation.

Autumn is by far my favorite season: the golden leaves, the brisk wind and the faint smell of pumpkin in the air are all cherished expressions of this beautiful time of year. But, while the aesthetics of fall are pleasurable and welcomed, its physical effects on my skin are certainly not.

For many like myself, the colder months render chapped, irritated skin that disrupts habitual cosmetic routines. As the leaves changed, so did my complexion. I found that my beloved Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick that typically never fails me, proved too drying for my skin during the chilly days and left me needing a new cover-up.

But which one? There are virtually millions of foundations out there that cater to all sorts of different skin types, tones and textures and that guarantee even, flawless coverage (sound familiar, ladies?). Thankfully, I already knew what sort of makeup I needed: a light, oil-free formula that hydrates, is build-able (meaning, you can layer more on to hide those 'trouble' spots), goes on smooth and offers lasting, natural results. I work with children all day, so I am constantly on my feet moving around, so I needed something that would not only last a few hours without needing retouching, but wouldn't make me look like a circus clown (kids can be brutal.)

After carousing Sephora's for web site for a while (best beauty site for narrowing down searches in my opinion), I came to learn that one of their top-selling products encompasses all that I needed...and more. The solution: MAKE UP FOR EVER'S HD Invisible Cover Foundation.

The web site details that this particular foundation, which won Allure's highly-coveted Best of Beauty Award in 2008 and 2011, still rains as Sephora's "top selling" liquid foundation since its launch in 2008. Like the rest of MUFE's HD line, the main purpose of this foundation is to conceal all skin imperfections that HD cameras expose (6 X's to be exact!) for those on TV and in films. Celebrities Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian who are known for their impeccable, glowing faces have been reported as making this foundation their go-to makeup for on-camera interviews, photo shoots and even award shows, and from what I can tell, the stuff does the job!

The secret lies in the revolutionary silicon-based formula that allows the product to glide on smoothly and remain on top of skin to create a porcelain-like cover, as opposed to it nestling in pores and fine-lines which emphasizes imperfections and can cause breakouts. The reason for this is that silicon molecules are too large to penetrate the skin, thus they stay on the surface and refract light, rather than absorb it which helps create an even complexion. HD Invisible Cover Foundation also encompasses 'Volatile Silicon' which increases setting time since the molecules evaporate on the skin quicker than in other foundations. This feature also helps those who like to add a touch coverage on top of bothersome areas like blemishes, scars and redness.

Naturally, once I learned all that, I raced over to the nearest Sephora and had my "beauty expert" friend help me pick out the perfect shade for my skin tone. I was happy to find that MUFE offers twenty-five beautiful shades for each and every skin color. Turns out, my summer tan is completely gone and I am frighteningly low #115 Ivory (third one up from the bottom. Yikes!) After my credit card was charged a sad to say, discouraging $40 for this apparent wonder cream, I nevertheless hurried back home to see if it lives up to all the hype and is truly worth the money.

With my face washed and ready to go, I first prepped my skin using my all-time favorite primer, Sephora's very own Base Zero Brilliance Anti-Shine Primer ($18). (Sidenote: if you tend to get oily and need something to control shine this stuff is the best out there...trust me, I've tried them all.) Next, I squirted about two full drops on the back of my hand to test its consistency which, thankfully, is everything a liquid foundation should be: creamy, light, smooth, non-fragrant and easy to blend. I found that it does dry rather quickly and has a beautiful full-cover (it completely covered a vein on the back of my hand). Now, it was time to truly test this baby out. I dabbed my foundation brush on the liquid that was leftover on my hand and began to gently aplied the product on my cheek using a stippling technique. It glided on very smooth just as it did on my hand, and within seconds my skin transformed into a glossy, glowing surface that was totally devoid of any flaws.

In terms of hydration, I found that my skin stopped feeling pinched and taught like it did with my Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick and actually felt softer upon removing the makeup. After all, HD Invisible Cover Foundation's second listed ingredient is pure water which will definitely help keep skin moist and refreshed. Also, the formula is "enriched with Relipidium," as stated on the product's box, which hydrates skin approximately 46% more, and serves as a prepping agent for foundation application. Basically, Relipidium serves as a built-in primer that softens and refreshes skin and makes it ready for makeup.

Next was the true test: how does this stuff hold up under the lens? An HD lens to be exact. After I finished the rest of my beauty routine, which I should note, included a quick dusting of MAKE UP FOR EVER'S HD Microfinish Powder ($30) that works wonders with its accompanying foundation, I grabbed my camera that has a 10 mega pixel Leica lens to see if this foundation can trick even the most advanced cameras. After months of craving a pair Jeffrey Campbell's signature Lita booties, I finally got the gall to go ahead and purchase a pair at long last. Credit card in hand, I began my three hour-long search for the perfect (and cheapest) pair. I sort of already knew that I wanted a black pair in the standard "Distressed Leather" since they go with almost everything and I usually wear black. Easy right? No.

As Google shopping spit out hit after hit, I came to realize that my beloved Lita's come in an alarming plethora of color combinations and textures. There is black suede, red suede, black leather, teal leather, black velvet with a black heel, black leather with a gold heel, American flag canvas, stellar canvas, green shaggy fur, yellow patent leather--the list goes on and on. Plagued with too many options, and as someone who doesn't exactly handle clothing varieties that well ("should I get this shirt in green or red? Maybe green. No, red. What?! It comes in blue?!?!" etc, etc, etc) I felt completely overwhelmed and unable to decide on which pair I liked best.

I got them the other day and LOVE them to death. They are 100% genuine, plush leather just like JC solicits, but the heel is not made of blond wood like I originally thought, but of some rubbery, manmade material. No big.

I got them in an 8 1/2 (I fluctuate between an 8 1/2 and a 9) and they fit like a glove! The best? They are extremely light and comfortable! Like, too comfortable. I thought being they're so large and clunky they would be heavy and hard to walk in. Complete opposite. In fact, I can barely feel them on my feet and they have some sort of slip-free rubber material on the soles and heels for added comfort and traction (God knows I'll need that if I'm walking around in 5" platforms).

STYLE GUIDE FOR DATES 1, 2 & 3: WHAT TO WEAR!!

It's finally happened: that cute guy you've been crushing on for EVER finally asked you out on a date at long last. Amidst your heart pounding and stomach fluttering with butterflies a million thoughts and questions spin around in your head, creating a web of anxious anticipation. Thoughts like, 'where will he take me?,' 'I wonder how long he's been thinking about this?,' 'do we hug or shake hands upon meeting?' are all involuntary questions an eager first-dater may ask her self. But while all those quandaries circulate your cute little brain for hours (maybe even days!) leading up to the 'big night' there's one crisis that pops into your head over and over and seems to outweigh all other uncertainties : 'WHAT DO I WEAR?!?!?'.

It's a tricky one for sure and an issue many women have trouble executing accordingly. Granted, most first dates are tough to plan an outfit around, for sometimes your date won't tell you where you are going or what two are doing for fear of ruining the surprise (which I hope he is clever enough to plan for your sake!).

Still, a woman in the dating scene should know the proper dress code basics--that is, for the first few dates no matter what her crush has in store. I can't tell you how many times I have seen couples who were obviously on their first few dates (I am a pro at picking this out) with the woman looking well...messy and clueless. In most cases, the guy looks like he's ready to doze off or is struggling not to eye the cutie in the red number a few tables down (gee, I wonder why?). But before you go all feminist nutso on me, let me just say that yes, personality>looks any day. A woman who radiates a sparkling, confident personality can rock a potato sack and still bring a man to his knees. However, I still maintain that appearances count for something, especially when you are out and about with a potential mate.

As a general rule, dating should be about slowly showing a little more of you every time you meet, but without revealing too much too soon. Any dating book will tell you "too much, too soon, too fast " ruins the suspense and mystery of dating which will inevitably doom your relationship to lift off even before your dinner is served. In essence, you wouldn't spill out your life story and all of your insecurities and anxieties right away for fear of scaring off your mate. The same rule applies to your clothing choices: reveal too much too soon, and you'll send him running for the hills....or trying to get you into bed prematurely because he probably assumes you are easy. The key here is to keep him wanting more in all arenas: mentally, emotionally, spiritually and in this case, physically.

That said, here it is, your go-to style guide for those first ever-so dreamy first dates:

Style Guide for Dates 1, 2 & 3: WHAT TO WEAR!!

Date #1: Simple and classy

OK, yes, this is the biggie. Not only is this the first time you guys are hanging out alone, but it will determine if a second date is in the stars or absolutely out of the question. Think of it more as a low-key interview that (hopefully) allows you guys to gain a better perpective on each others' general life story: what you do, where you're from, what your hobbies are, blah, blah, blah. With this in mind, match your style to the night's vibe: reserved and slow. Breaking out the black mini skirt and 5 inch stilettos don't exactly read 'sophisticated adult' rather, 'easy and down for whatever.' Not a very good first impression.

Your saftest bet is going with the classic LBD (Little Black Dress). It's a safe, tasteful and timeless look that can be dressed up or down how ever you choose. Opt for one that is appropriate in length, perhaps right above the knee and that doesn't reveal too much on top.

Also, for this date try to keep the accessories and glitz to a minimum. Too much glam can be distracting and make you appear materialistic and flashy--a quality most guys don't necessarily enjoy. However, a signature piece that demonstrates your personality can not only spice up your ensemble, but serve as a conversation starter. For example, wearing your grandmother's bracelet is not only elegant and nostalgic, but can be a great way to discuss your family's history. Likewise, those cool dangly earrings you found at that flea market the other day is a great way to discuss what you enjoy doing on the weekends while bringing his attention to the feminine curves of your neck and face.

And speaking of your face, makeup should be kept minimal and subdued. Think natural, radiating beauty, not caked-on mess. Keep your foundation light and creamy (guys like girls with glossy, smooth-looking complexions. It indicates good health) and maybe just add a touch of mascara to brighten up the eyes. You can even dab some lipstick onto your lips for a stain effect, just don't smear it on. In terms of hair, wearing it up or down doesn't really matter, although I think a girl should try to look as naturally feminine as possible and long, flowing hair definitely signifies that. A tightly slicked chignon on the other hand, however chic and clean looking it is, just appears to starch and austere for a first date. But, again this is your call. So, if it's down make sure it's brushed and clean. If it's up, make sure all fly aways are safely tucked away to avoid looking messy.

Shoe wise, we all know how the saying goes: 'shoes make the outfit' and honestly, it couldn't be more true. The right pair will either make or break your look. So, if you don't want that LBD to look like a basic frock you wear to go food shopping in, pair them with some tasteful heels that you can last walking around in (hey, you never know what he has in store for you!). Basically, save the three inch red platform Lady Gaga-inspired heels with the hundred different straps for the club and go with the basic three inch beige pumps that go with every outfit. Sometimes less is more.

Date #2: A little more...

So, you've survived the awkward first date rudimentariness and you two hit it off so well that he asked out for a second go around. Firstly, congrats! Getting over the first date hurdle is arguably the toughest part of the whole courting experience, so good for you! (and him). Now then, it's time to have some fun.

The main idea here is to slowly show him another facet of your personality, or another side of you via good wardrobe choices because let's be honest, the whole point of dating is to get to know the other person inside and out which can be done with clothing (to a certain degree, of course). Therefore, a good second date ensemble can consist of something that is a little more edgy and relaxed. Think of an outfit you might wear when grabbing a casual drink with your girlfriends our when seeing a band play. For example, pairing black skinny jeans with a nice blouse and a fitted jacket illustrates your down-to-earth, girl next door persona while showing off your funky fashion styling abilities. In regards to shoes, you can step up your game a little by wearing platforms or a chic pair of leather booties, just don't choose anything too obnoxious or again, 'clubbish.' It sends out the wrong vibe.

Hair and makeup can be intensified a little, but leave the black-out smoky eyes for Saturday night out with the girls. A few swipes of a nice creamy eyeshadow across your lids won't hurt, and hey, maybe go ahead and add a little shimmer to your cheeks for some extra sparkle.

Date #3: Foxy lady

Well well, you survived dates 1 and 2 and he's STILL after you? You must be doing something right. Think of this date as his cute little way of saying, 'I like you and I want to keep seeing you.' Swooning? Yeah, you should be. Therefore, it's crucial more than ever, to maintain your position while stepping up your style game. You've nearly got him hooked, so don't lose sight now! He obviously likes your personality enough to keep asking you out or else you wouldn't be going on date #3, so now it's time to really give him a surprise by giving him a little sneak-peak preview of the sex kitten you can be. So, wing out that eyeliner and tousle the hair because now is the time to show your flirty, sexy side that he will totally eat up.

However, I must clarify what I mean by showing off your "sexy side:" I do not mean 'slutty' in any sense. Too many girls misinterpret this for baring all (literally) and ditching any forms of creative and classy fashion styling. "Sexy" insinuates inspiring arousal and excitement whether it be physical, emotional or mental stimulation. When a woman is considered "sexy" that doesn't necessarily mean she is only 'hot looking.' Sexy can mean a magnitude of things with physicality just being one of them. For example, many men consider an intelligent woman "sexy." "Slutty" on the other hand strictly denotes physical excitement which is usually attributed with obscenely revealing clothing, or lack there of. No man finds this a desiring quality in a mate, unless of course he is a complete and utter hound whom you shouldn't waste your time on anyway. The point is, expounding sensuality, or sexiness is really something that naturally flows out of you from within which the right clothing choices can help you emit.

So, the best advice I can give you for this date is to yes, show off a little more if you feel comfortable doing so, but remember to BALANCE what you reveal and what you conceal. For example, you can show off those gorgeous long legs of yours by wearing that tight little mini skirt you've never had the chance to wear, but just don't go overboard on top (i.e., keeps the twins under control). Or, you can wear that clingy little dress that hugs all of your curves to show off your best features, but downplay the shoes and jewelry a little.

Maybe spruce up the makeup a touch too, but again, do so moderately and tastefully. For example, ruby lips are classic and chic, and a sure way to lure him to your lips for a deep, passionate kiss. Chances are he is dying to do just that and what's better than having a sensual kiss planted on your lips while his hands brush through your hair? So, keep the mane flowing and wild just as long as it's nicely groomed and not just all over the place.

Shoe wise, go with something sexy, but not trampy. Find the shoe that best compliments your ankles and legs and go with those. Remember, you are trying to show off your best attributes in a demure, vague way that will sustain his intrigue while looking classy. Men like challenges, so give him something to work with.

By following this simple outline you will not only win your date over by looking appropriate and well-groomed for each proceeding date, but will show your date that you also value their time and company by putting time and consideration into your appearance. It will show him you care and take pride in how you look beside him, for let's be honest, who wants to sit next to a complete mess at dinner? I know I sure don't. You know that saying, "put your best face forward?" well, it's a little like that, only it's your whole body.

Similarly, I should note that your date should be dressing just as well for you as too. After all, dating is a two way street and ladies, if he doesn't even have the wherewithal to at least comb his hair or put on a clean shirt for you, dump him and do it quick because he's no gentleman. Sorry, but it's true. It's like what my mother always tells me, "a man in love will move mountains for the girl he loves" meaning, if a guy is truly into you he will do nearly anything to win your affection and that includes being dressed to impress, so why not do the same for him as well?

A Rather Unexpected Blog Hiatus

Well. That certainly took longer than expected.

Sorry for the random post stopping. I've been a bit busy this summer dealing with the never ending graduate school application process: essays, exams, letters of recommendation requests--the lot. Luckily, all of that is pretty much squared away (well, at least for a while) which means ample time to re-boost this baby so I can dish on all the cool new items I (needlessly) bought this summer. Shoes, clothes, bags, makeup, and repeat.

So, lot's to come in the next few days! Stay tuned!

My L.R.D (or, 'Little Red Dress')

After making a bajillion phone calls and causing near-quarter life crises for many salespeople at American Apparel, I finally got my Cotton Spandex Jersey Bandeau Pencil Dress in Red. As some of you may know, I have been searching high and low for the perfect knee-length, curves-hugging fire engine red dress and this one takes the cake.

According to AA's web site, this dress has been sold out for quite some time in this particular color and size (small) and rumor has it, it might even be discontinued (as a whole that is) in the near future.

But, being one to never take no for an answer, I decided to pick up the phone and make a few calls to the headquarters building in LA justttt to be sure. Needless to say, I drove a few hundred people nuts.

As luck would have it, there happened to be EIGHT of these floating around the company at various stores nationwide in spite of what the web site said--one just so happening to be at the SoHo store in Manhattan, NY. Naturally, I made the call and a nice young salesman (who went to Wagner and knew me from my days at NYLON which is just down the street!) immediately packed up the dress and shipped it out to the store out in Roosevelt Field Mall, which is closest to me.

So, here it is. My perfect LRD.

I've been toying around with it and have so far come up with 26 different ways to wear this baby. So far, I like the standard low-cut halter look the best.

Broken Social Scene's "Sweetest Kill" Oozes Guts and Horror

In an age where the more outrageous, obscure or sometimes downright frightening an artistic concept is, the cooler it is, people have tendencies take things just a tad too far. Such is the case with Broken Social Scene's debut video for their newly released single Sweetest Kill.

Directed by Claire Edmondson, the immensely gory 5:10 minute music video takes shock-value to a whole new level. It stars Bijou Philips as a wacked-out, sociopathic killer who after seducing her lover, perfunctionarily kills him and hacks him up--quite blatantly--with an axe, saw and other instruments. It's pretty much a hipster music video version of American Psycho...just replace yuppie banking exec/serial killer Pat Bateman with a cute, petite blonde in a sun dress.

It's explicit, raw and honestly, quite terrifying. Actually, I couldn't watch it in its entirety. THAT's how violent it is.

Cheap Luxury: Part Deux

Here we go again. Cheap Luxury finds continued.

Like I said in the post below, savvy bargain shopping is my M.O. Unless a posh item is a) well-made and a complete steal for the listed price, or b) can't-live-without-it-got-to-have-it-now amazing I am not shelling out the cash no matter how fabulous it is. Call me a miser, but I just prefer shopping economically and intelligently.

Which is why I am so proud of these two terrifically brilliant Cheap Luxury finds:

I feel in love with these babies the moment I saw them. Bebe's Nastaha sandal pump is fairly new, having been released sometime in May of this year, so they're still priced at the original $110 ticket value at most stores and web sites. Which is why I was so thrilled to have bought them only for $52 and oddly enough, with many other colors and sizes still available. Typically, when a new shoe is reduced to half its "value"-- especially one as new as this and by a company like Bebe (which usually is over-priced to begin with) -- the shoe is either damaged or nearly sold out with only sample sizes remaining. But these 5 1/2" spikes were right in the front part of the store (where most new wholesale items are located) and with many more to spare. Scorrrre.

Once again, I hit the shoe jackpot with these Charles David beauts. Cheap Luxury

To me, great style doesn't have to be expensive. You can create a chic look without breaking your wallet just by using some thrift-sense. As a matter of fact, some of the coolest, most original and creative outfits I have ever seen were inexpensive (mostly vintage finds) and worn by the average street-styler who's on a tight budget.

I'll admit I have a distinct taste for luxury like every other gal, but let's be clear on one thing: luxury doesn't necessarily mean well-made. I pity those who spend every last bit of their paycheck on designer items just so they can say they have so-and-so's bag, or whoever-is-in-at-the-moment's shoes when really, those things probably aren't even worth the money. Those people have no clue what they are doing and need a reality check. In fact, shopping like that is probably the most unoriginal, un-'fashionista' thing you could do. Buying exactly what's on the page of a magazine or lookbook requires no creative innovation. Just a credit card.

Phew.

The summer of neons is upon us, lifting us out of the dark and heavy clothing of winter and into a fresher, brighter style period. Every time I carouse fashion blogs or magazines for inspirational purposes I see nearly all of the entries bursting with brilliant, nearly blinding items. Ordinarily, I opt for the dark and subdued, summer or not, but as of late my wardrobe (and even hair!) are straying toward the light and getting a color-overhaul.

I've sort of made it a rule to never buy American Apparel garments again, as for the items being extremely overpriced for shoddy mass-manufactured crap. But, for this dress I will make an exception. For one, I love that it's knee-length which I find much classier and better curve-accentuating than mini-dresses sometimes. It has a plethora of styling options to create with a simple toying of the straps and, it comes in all sorts of awesome neon colors--in this case, a fiery red that helps bring out the gold/yellow undertones in my olive skin. Flirty femininity gets a punk makeover with this rendition of Sam Edelman's signature Lorissa pump. For a while now I've been dying for a pair of these in the classic black suede that first put the Lorissa on the map about a year ago. This shoe is definitely not for the weak-hearted.

Worn with a simple outfit, this Roman gladiator-meets-Pochahontas inspired bracelet will stand out beautifully and add a bit of Bohemian goddess style to your look.

For a while now I have been craving a bright green handbag. The Mosquilted Bag of Moschino's Flesh Pink collection is by far the best one I've seen thus far. What I admire most is the gold embellishments used that blends well with the body's perfect shade of Kelly green. Some say it's an obvious copy of Chanel's infamous 2.55 bag as for the chain shoulder strap and similar clasp, but I disagree. I think this bag has an identity all its own.

Hues of Blue

Having the blues never felt so good.

In my previous article about proper color-blocking (re: Don't Color-Block, Color BALANCE), I mentioned infusing bright, summery colors with darker ones to create a contrasting effect with an outfit. As I re-read my post just now to check for spelling errors, I found myself glancing over and over at the bright blue pumps the girl in the last photo is wearing. I LOVE that shade of blue and have been obsessing over finding heels just like them ever since.

That is why I decided to carouse Polyvore.com --a great little web site for discovering the newest fashion and beauty trends/merchandise and creating your very own lookbook of sorts (a very cool idea). First I plugged in "royal blue" and "pumps" into the search menu and a TON of great items popped up. But, why not take things a step further, I thought, so, I then began searching all things blue and what I found almost made my heart freeze. With all the talk of royalty going around lately, it comes as no great surprise to find people adding a little touch of luxery into their lives--or hair for that matter.

From rhinestones, to crystals to antiqued marcasite and diamonds, celebs are crowning their heads with little bits of shimmer-and-glimmer to get that 'oh-so-regal' Kate Middleton grandeur.

Crystalized feathers, diamond headbands, gem-encrusted barrettes--you name it, A-Listers are wearing them to luxe-up their outfits.

Don't Color Block, Color BALANCE

Color-blocking is a big hit this spring/summer.

'Color Blocking' is a major trend for spring/summer 2011 fashions. Lot's of designers have hopped on the mega-tone bandwagon by infusing fresh, bright summery colors into their collections.

Done right, you can create a fun, energetic outfit to brighten up your day. But done incorrectly, you risk looking like a human rubix cube. Not cute.

Think about the name of this trend: color-blocking. It could very well mean to wear a bunch of outrageous colors simultaneously, but to me, blocking means to restrict, have guidelines or to literally block in. That's why I feel you need to wear darker colors with your neons, so you 'block in' the bright colors and have them stand out better. Essentially, the blocking colors act as borders to help define an outfit.

That is why you need to BALANCE your color-blocking. I am a stickler for this, and have mentioned the importance of balancing out your outfits in many past posts (most specifically in How To Wear Over- The-Knee Boots article). I realize that the current trend is to layer on a variety of neon colors, but like I always say, despite what the fashion magazines and style 'experts' dictate, just because something is 'in vogue' does not necessarily mean it will work for YOU. And with this particular look, I don't think wearing all sorts of blinding colors at once is attractive on anyone.

But if you want to show-off some brilliant tones, just be sure you only have a FEW bright pieces on. For example, if you want to wear those mustard yellow skinny jeans, don't pair them with an orange or pink top. Implement a darker color so the focus is on your pants. I mean, why else would you buy mustard yellow pants if not to have them standout, right? Then maybe add on a few other bright accessories. Likewise, if you're wearing darker clothing, introduce some vibrant accessories, like a rich cobalt pump or a mint green handbag. Again, we're going for balance, not obnoxious.

With that, here are a few key items and looks to help you achieve a well-balanced color-blocked look:

Jeffrey Does It Better: Jeffrey Campbell S/S 2011 Lookbook

I am a HUGE Jeffrey Campbell fan. In fact, some of my most cherished (and most complimented on) shoes are his creations.

To me, his work is the perfect balance between throwback, Boho funk and feminine, whimsical charm. They are definitely designs for the girl who is not only looking to 'wow' onlookers with some personal style, but bold enough to brave 5" plus platforms.

Just now, as I was drooling over JC's Kole platforms (holy HELLLL I want those!), I happened to come across JC's Spring/Summer 2011 online Lookbook Small Town Hero. It's awesome! (as predicted.)

Like the tittle infers, the lookbook has a rugged, all-American feel. Shot in Ontario, Orgeon each picture captures the vintage, southwestern flair behind every JC shoe: 70's-inspired wooden platforms, stud covered leather, and washed-out weathered canvases dominate every page. It's also nice to see models' legs that are actually womanly and curvy and not toothpick sticks; something you rarely see in shoe catalogues.

The Doctor's In

It's been a good run worn out black bag I've had FOREVER, but it's time for you to go.

I am in the market for a new, cool black purse that will go with any outfit I throw on (especially because I wear black a lot). The slouchy shoulder bag I used to death is well...dead, so it's time to go shopping!

J.Lo Reveals Her "Greatest Letdown"

In a recent interview with The New York Times, 'Jenny from the Block' Lopez opens up about all of the exciting new projects happening in her life right now. From the joys of motherhood, to the release of her seventh studio album Love?, to of course, her recent role as an American Idol judge, Lopez humbly boasts at having one glittery-nailed hand in every pot.

Though all is rosy in the singer/actress/dancer/designer/mogul's (or whatever you want to call her) life, she did reveal one deep-seeded disappointment, or "letdown" as she called it, regarding the failure of her fashion line, J.Lo.

"That was sad for me," she told the Times, "I just felt like I never got a fair chance to do it right."

Recalling back to her 2001 department store line, Lopez was continuously scrutinized for producing cheap, over-priced garments of which, she contributes to her then "misunderstanding of the [fashion] business" and "lack of creative control."

But like the saying goes, one must learn from one's mistakes in order to succeed and that is exactly what 'the most beautiful woman in the world' has done. This time around, Lopez has teamed-up with powerhouse designer Tommy Hillfiger to collaborate a women's line for Kohl's. The latter told the newspaper, "the difference this time around is that Jennifer is fully engaged with a company that is professionally staffed to really develop anything she wants, from towels to knee-high suede boots. She lives fashion."

And such a turnaround comes at no better time, for before signing on as an American Idol Judge, Lopez was labeled a typical, out-of-touch celebrity who was too concerned with the glam and fame to reach down to her fans. But with the newly established Kohl's line, she hopes to regain her fan's appreciation as a star who is not too far off in the distance by creating a line (a better one that is) that is geared for the average girl who wants some chic wear.

She notes, “I just think I went away for a while, and [now] I’m being reintroduced to the public."

Lopez plans on launching J.Lo 2.0 sometime next fall, just as husband Marc Anthony will premier his first ever menswear collection. Let's just hope she does in fact spruce up the line, and leave the cheap, terrycloth track suits to Kimora Lee Simmons.

Every time the opener for VH1's Mob Wives comes on I have a mini fashion aneurism over Drita D'avanzano's killer shoes:

After searching high and low for the name of these (I knew they were Christian Louboutin's based on the iconic red sole), I finally found out that they are indeed Louboutin's "Triclo" pumps.

They range anywhere from $450-500 and come in red as well but, in my opinion, they aren't as nice as the black. Nothing ever is.

I just need to find a store that isn't sold out of them. : /

Feather Hair Extensions: A Hair Do or Don't?

As I have stated in previous trend posts, wild is in. Honestly, it seems the more out there, colorful or ironically unconventional a look is, the cooler it is.

As if ombre'ing your hair a washed out green or red wasn't outré enough (something I totally wish I had the nerve to do), why not put some weird, synthetic things in your hair for some extra oomph. And while we're at it, make it a fake feather.

Now don't get me wrong, usually I love anything Native-American inspired and I too am guilty of jumping on the extension bandwagon and rocking some faux locks back in the day. But mine, mind you, were made of real hair that matched my color perfectly and only served to lengthen my then shoulder-length strands. Essentially, I was going for natural and subtle, not statement-raising.

Which is why I am not really loving this current clip-on feather braid, wannabe hipster Pocahontas trend. I've seen this a lot amongst female students I teach (predominantly pre-teens) and to make it even more bizarre, apparently the newest fad is to trade them with your girlfriends? Either way, I don't really see what's so ooh-la-la about them. To be quite honest, they sort of remind me of caterpillars. Maybe it's the fact that most girls only put one in and it looks like they have something (unintentionally) stuck in their hair. Like a caterpillar. Or maybe it's the fact that they are usually too thin and look a tad 'wirey.' Who knows.

I think the only way to successfully pull this look off without it looking like a weak attempt at dreads is to go full-throttle. That is, to put A LOT in and weave (no pun intended) them throughout sections of your hair like highlights, or as if your hair is REALLY just that cool. Basically, if you're going to do the avant-garde, i'm-too-scared-to-get-a-tattoo-so-i'll-rebel-with-my-hair thing, go big or go home. Again, wild is in, so why not do it right?

Hug It Out: Earrings That Cling, Not Dangle

For about a year or so, the wild earring trend has been a accessory must-do for an instant outfit facelift. From wispy feathers, to shimmering rhinestones, to swinging shoulder-length metallic strands the standard earring has been through a slew of changes, all of which being more extravagant than the next.

The coolest earring style as of late? Earring cuffs, or "ear huggers" as their called. They are a bit nostalgic of 90's, artsy accessory fashion when tons of mini hoops around the perimeter of an ear was in vogue (something I always wanted to do, but never thought I could pull off. Probably because I was like, seven at the time).

This style is a bit reminiscent of that, only it's about wearing one staple set instead of a million mini earrings. Though I am a jewelry fanatic and LOVE the clustered accessory trend (read: Summer 2011 Trend Alert post), I do appreciate this particular earring style as a primary accessory. It's just way too cool and different to be forgotten amongst layered necklaces and bracelets.

And because these earrings wrap around the ear instead of dangling, it is best to wear your hair up so they aren't hidden. A cute messy chignon, for example helps balance out the overpowering glitz with some carefree, insouciance flair.

Yet Another Birthday Watch

This is number three. I am not sure what exactly is going on with me and watches lately (I never was too into them), but I am all about them now.

I posted a picture of the other two I received as birthday gifts last Tuesday. Those are a bit more on the glam side, hence the diamonds around the face. The newest to my collection, a gold GUESS? men's watch, is a tad more demure, but still a stunner. Initially, I had my eye on the Michael Kors'--no doubt the trend setting label for the recent gigantic gold watch phenomenon-- but, I wasn't particularly impressed by them. I think it's because EVERYONE has one, and only to have his name on their wrist. Plus, they are overpriced for what they are (fake gold

metal.) and I hear they break easily. Lame. That is not how I roll.

So, being the champion shopper that I am I took a stroll around the entire watch counter at Macy's determined to find something comparable, if not better. As I turned to look at some mediocre Fossil knockoff, I happened to see the men's section in the corner of my eye. Right at the bottom was this blinding hunk of shimmery gold that immediately caught my attention. It happened to be the gold GUESS? and I fell in love with it right there.

It's big, it's obnoxious and I love it.

It has three fully-functioning chronographs, is made of stainless steel, is water resistant and comes with a 10-year warranty. The saleswoman and I compared it to the Michael Kors' and there was only a slight difference in face size, mine being bigger, which is why I love it so much. Afterall, the recent watch trend is 'bigger is better,' so why not do it up right? And a woman wearing a nice men's watch is always very fashion-forward. Think outside the box, ladies.

The best part? There happened to be a sale on jewelry that day, so instead of paying $150, I paid $109 with my left-over birthday money and had it sized for free. BOOYAH!
