Malahide is having a National Cleanup Day on Saturday 7th May at 10.30am. We need everyone out so - no excuses! Everyone should meet in the Train Car Park at 10.30 and bring any equipment you think might be useful. We particularly want to tackle/remove/cover the graffiti we were plagued with late last year. The Malahide Tidy Towns Group will hold their AGM on Thursday 5th May at 7pm in the Grand Hotel. All are welcome. Reports will be given on the latest results from the Competition, review of the work done in 2010, projects currenlty underway and an outline of the 5-year plan. New Signs in Malahide

The Tidy Towns Group have requested a number of new Cultural and Natural Heritage signs to go up around the Malahide and environs. Our lack of signs was criticised in the 2010 report and rightly too. Some of these new signs have already gone up. They outline some of the natural and historic features found in and around Malahide.

Tackling Graffiti in Malahide

The outbreak of Graffiti is a growing challenge to Tidy Towns members. We have been attempting to tackle it by removing it in good time but for a while it was being replaced just as quickly. Sgt Austin Cox has had good results apprehending the culprits and we would now urge everyone to make a move to cover/remove any graffiti they find. Seabury Environmental group has done stirling work in raising awareness of the graffiti and have compiled a cd of photographs of damaged areas.

Saturday 7th May (10.30am in the Station Car Park) is our National Clean-up Day and all are welcome to bring materials along to paint over/remove graffiti from our beautiful town.

In January 2011 the Malahide Camera Club got together with the Tidy Towns to establish a Biodiversity Photographic Exhibition which went on display for 2 weeks in the Malahide Library.

Later the display was seen at the Malahide Community Forum AGM and at TARGET Adult Education Centre. The display is currently touring the local schools in Malahide and anyone interested in displaying the exhibition can email Heidi at HeidiBedell@eircom.net.

Bee Garden at Malahide Library

The Bee Garden was established at the Malahide Library in June 2010 as part of Biodiversity Year. The plants were purchased from the Bloom Festival and the hive was donated by the National Bee Association of Ireland. The garden was launched by Deputy Mayor of Fingal County Council Peter Coyle.

A new transport initiative for Malahide is recently being introduced.
You can reduce your reliance on your car, save petrol, car miles, global warming and help to maintain the planet for future generations (this can result in a wonderful feel good factor!)
Following is a circular about a novel idea by a group called Dublin Commute.

I would like to introduce a new innovative business to you - Dublin Commute - www.dublincommute.ie . It focuses on point to point shared taxi rides, park and ride facilities, tunnel sharing, school runs and corporate commute solutions. I hope it is of interest to you and your organisation, which can benefit from time, cost and stress savings while contributing to the environment and corporate social responsibility. Biodiversity plans for Malahide

Hans Visser of Fingal County Council is looking out for suggestions of projects to enhance biodiversity (increase the amount of wild plants and animals) in the Malahide area.
Already Scoil Iosa students are getting together with St. Andrew's students to carry out a biodiversity project on the site of the old changing rooms on the beach.
If you have any ideas of biodiversity projects eg butterfly gardens, bird boxes etc.

Transition A areas

— 20% of public open space in 2010
— Remove any hay crop annually to reduce fertility of soil and allow colonisation by wildflowers
— Seed wildflowers to speed transition to meadows
— Plant bulbs at boundary between mown edge and meadow areas in year 1
— Plant tree groups where appropriate from year 1

Areas selected in Malahide

— Ard na mara green
— Millview lawns green
— Seapark hill green
— The seabanks grassed area at the beach
— Robswall
— Old yellow walls road (estuary end of seabury)
— Malahide Castle demesne
Remainder will be in Transition B

Transition B

— All open space except Transition A areas i.e. 80% of open space in year 1
— These areas will be mown monthly in 2010
— A holding position until taken into Transition A programme

Removing Graffiti

Tidy towns would like to encourage residents to remove graffiti as soon as they see it. Acetone is great for removing paint - check out the chemists or DIY shops.
Naturally we also encourage people to remove litter whenever they see it.

Frank Donaldson expert advice

On Thursday 4th March Frank Donaldson (a Tidy Towns adjudicator) was engaged by Malahide Tidy Towns to review the town and advise the committee. On that evening in the Grand Hotel Mr. Donaldson gave a presentation highlighting strengths, weaknesses and possible projects for development.
Weaknesses included litter, graffitti and wildlife while strengths were our built environment, estates and approch roads.
