Just when you thought that railways were all about trains, along comes a book that opens up a whole new vista into a railway. This is that book, and it’s a story of the Malayan Railway. Daily coal trains to Batu Arang, monthly pay trains escorted by the Railways’ own police force and a train that ran just 3 miles but came to be called an express, are just some of the gems unearthed from our Railways’ forgotten past. 

The Railways managed ports and even operated an airline at one time. And it wasn’t just people; even cows and horses took the trains! Spiced with interesting bits of history and anecdotes, this is a railway story seen through the eyes of people who lived, and worked in it. A must-read book if you are a railway buff.

About The Author : 
The idea to write a book on the railway was from the experiences during my days as a railway district officer in the 80s. Whenever there was a rail disruption like derailments, newspaper reporters always wanted to know the cause of the mishap. I thought writing about what the Railway was trying to do to restore the services would be more interesting. But, that never happened. That was the time I told myself that when I had the time, I would sit down and write about my railways. With retirement from the Railway approaching, I got down to fulfilling that promise I made to myself years and years ago.  I started the book in 2004 and finished it in around 2008. Then time was spent looking around for a publisher. They were not too helpful; they felt that the subject matter would only cater for a narrow group of people. In the end, used my own finances to publish the book. I have been busy selling it like a direct salesman. Lately, the book has been put on book shops at ringgit 45.90 per copy.

Writing about the book was not too difficult. I am a third generation railwayman..........I was born in a railway house in Gemas, grew up in a railway home and worked in it as an adult. As such, I was very familiar with the railway subject. A lot of it is told and narrated from personal experiences or of having heard of them from people who went through them. There were a lot of retired  railwayman who were very happy to share their experiences from the 1950s  and 1960s [I was only a child then]. Information like that gave an insight into what it was like in the Railways in the 'old' days. The last part of the writing was spent sourcing for historical information from the National Archives. Most of the things covered in my book will give a very good idea of what the railways were in this country during the past 100 years or so.  A lot of things covered in the book, are also not known to the present day people. Very few people for example, know that we had a railway line going to Batang Berjuntai or that the coal used to run the trains and work the electricity plants were from Batu Arang. They were all carried on the train. No one from the present day would know of the existence of a railway line to these two places. These are things known to a few people except maybe to old retired railwayman This book is about what it meant to live, grow up and work in a railway environment. At the same time, it also gives a very good historical perspective of the Malayan Railway, the past 100 years or so.

Railway services in Klang Valley – Overview of public feedback

Introduction

Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) commuter system is a suburban railways service and mostly runs in Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan Region. It’s was operations on 14 August 1995 and provided fully air-conditioned electric train. At earlier stage, it consists two line namely Sentul-Port Klang and Rawang-Seremban lines. As per latest development, the line has been extended from Rawang to Tanjung Malim.

The quality of railway services in Klang Valley is always becomes a debate issues between service provider and users. While the users demand more frequent and quality public transportation, the service provider always complaint about less ridership and fully utilization by public for railway as public transport.

KTM commuter had improved in most area such as longer services hours, more frequency of train arrival, improve delay time and adding the number of coach. But they are still complaint with the unsatisfactory from the users.

How bad is user perception?
Which area should be improved?

That is an area need to be known.

With the objective o quantify the passengers satisfaction towards services offered by railway services in Klang Valley, a questionnaire survey has been conducted to about 200 responders to get a feedback from the users.

Limitation of Works

In order to achieve the objectives, the scopes and limitation of the study are identified as follows:

The population of this study is limited to potential users only. Potential user is the KTM Commuter riders with age 18 years and above.
The studied line is Seremban - Kuala Lumpur Sentral - Rawang only. While the selected station for the observation is concentrated at the station with high ridership.
The survey and observation are conduct based on the day treatment, focuses on day-of-weak effect which is “weekdays” and “weekend” only.

Socio-Demographic Characteristics

Table 1, summarizes the descriptive statistics of socio-demographic of KTM Komuter respondents. A total of 200 samples were distributed. About 60.5% of responders consider the majority were female.

The highest proportion of age group was between 18-30 years of age (65.5%), the second highest group between 31-40 years of age (20.0%) followed by 41-50 years old (9.5%). Another 4.0% at the age between 51-60 years and only 1% of them age above 60 years. As for occupation of area of profession, 40.5% of the respondents were in academic field, which consist students, teachers or even tutor and lecturers from universities.

About 17.5% respondents come from professional and managerial group, followed by skilled worker (14.5%), then semi skilled and unskilled worker (12.5%). The remaining 10.5% of the responders were from clerical and sales group and another 4.5% from ‘other’ group.

The income band corresponding to the highest proportion of respondents (41.5%) is RM 1000 and below per month. The next highest income categories were RM 2001-RM 3000 per month (27.5%) followed by RM 1001-RM 2000 per month (18.5%) and another 12.5% has income RM 3000 and more.

On average the number of vehicle ownership is one (1) vehicle in a family. But surprisingly a large percentage of 15.5% owned four (4) vehicles or more in a household but still choose commuter as a mode of transport.

Quality of Services from Users View

The transit quality of service (QOS) can really influence the user choices [TCRP Report 100]. In that reason, to improve the ridership and attract new users, improving the services quality in one of the measure for continuous development. The user satisfaction is a measure for the services quality in user’s point of view. Customers express their points of view about the services by providing judgments on some service aspects through sample survey. The objective of this analysis is to provide a tool for measuring the overall transit service quality, taking into account rider judgments about different service aspects.

The services aspect had focus more on service characteristic, service reliability, comfort of ridership, cleanliness, fare, information, safety and security and customer services.

Overall, it was considered sixteen (16) attributes with average satisfaction is 3.45 as reported in Table 2. According to a scale from 1 to 6, attribute with the highest satisfaction score is “ease of purchasing a ticket” (k=15), which contributes to the overall satisfaction with mean of 4.16. The less satisfaction is “train crowding” (k=5) with mean of 2.36. The value of “Overall Satisfaction” is 3.45 out of 6. By converting this score into a percentage, the S.I shows that the service is about 58 percent successful in satisfying its customers.

Figure 1 shows the mean satisfaction graphically. From the overall service aspect, attribute 5, “train crowding” from comfort service aspect give the lowest mean satisfaction is 2.36 out of 6 which the QOS is 2 (unpleasant). The next lowest rating given by the passengers is attribute 8, “level of noise and vibration on train” also from comfort service aspect where the mean satisfaction is 2.86 out of 6 which the QOS is 3 (uncomfortable).

It is clearly shown that “comfort aspects” need critical attention from KTM operator for future modification. Attribute 15, “ease of purchasing a thicket” from customer services aspect give the highest satisfaction where the mean satisfaction is 4.16 out of 6 which the QOS is 4 (acceptable). This attribute seems give satisfaction to most KTM passengers.

Conclusion

This users survey measured overall satisfactory as 3.45 out of rating 6(excellent) and 1(bad). Comfort service aspect shows the lowest satisfaction when the mean satisfaction for “train crowding” attributes rated as 2.36 out of 6. Customer service aspect shows the highest satisfaction when the mean satisfaction for “ease of purchasing a thicket” contributes as 4.16 out of 6. This factor should be main criteria to conduct a review of the current situation towards quality of service specifically from passengers’ perspective of view.

Malayan Railway Rail Ticket For Millitary 1955

Military 1955 ticket

I have received an e-mail from Mr. Roy Nixon from UK on 23.8.2010 for asking anybody who would like to have Malayan Railways ticket that was issued to a military party for travel between Kuala Lumpur and Johore Bharu. He have had the ticket since took this party down to Johore Bharu in 1955.

I have give my address to him and ticket arrive safely via air mail today 1.9.2010 after 55 years later in Malaysia. With nice stamps on envelope (Special issue celebrating the 50th anniversary of British Rail’s) is great for stamps collector like me. Thanks for the ticket and I will appreciate it history.

Seremban Station 1920s

Seremban is formerly called Sungai Ujong which is established around 1840. The density of population started to concentrate around Linggi River when tin was found at that time. The local areas were also a spots for rubber plantation and estate. As time passed, commercial activities have been thriving. The development of Seremban has been increasing tremendously when railways connecting Kuala Lumpur and Singapore was built around 1890.

Seremban railway station was constructed between 1904 to 1910 at a cost of RM26,000.00, having long served earlier railway companies before the Malayan Railway Administration (now known as the Malayan Railway) took over responsibilities of managing all lines in Malaya in 1948. The station continued to offer Intercity train services along the North-South Line, as well as offering goods deliveries.

From 6 February 1994 to 12 April 1994, the station underwent extensive remodeling in preparation for the launch of the Rawang-to-Seremban stretch of the KTM Komuter commuter train services. The renovation saw the retrofitting of new KTM Komuter facilities into the station, as well as the raising of all platforms in the station to support easier access in and out of KTM locomotives and coaches.

Jurong Industrial estate rail link to open soon

KUALA LUMPUR Tues – The 15 mile extension of the railway line from Bukit Timah to the Jurong industrial estate will be open to traffic in the next few days. It was announced here today.A statement from the Malayan Railway Administration said that at least 400,000 tons of traffic was expected on this new line annually bringing in $3 to $4 million revenue.The project was launched at the request of Singapore’s Economic Development Board which provided the Malayan Railway with a loan of nearly $6 million to carry out the job.

Five tunnels

This loan will be repaid by the Malayan Railway on the basis of the tonnage moved over the Jurong extension.

Work on the extension began in 1963. About a million cubic yards of earth was moved.

The Economic Development Board also built five tunnels, eight bridges and 22 culverts before handing over the job of laying the track to the Malayan Railway.The Malayan Railway will initially operate a cement clinker train from Perak to Jurong.Arrangement are also in hand to run trains conveying iron ore and timber from the East Coast of Malaya to Jurong.

JURONG RAILWAY MAKES FIRST PUBLIC RUN

Another milestone in Singapore’s industrialization programmed was passed today.

The new railway to serve the Jurong industrial complex made its first public run from Bukit Timah station, carrying a party of Press representatives and officials of the railway and Economic Development Board.

The $5.5 million rail project providing a total of 12 miles of new tracks to various parts of the Jurong Industrial Estate is almost fully completed.

The branch lines , which are still under construction are due to be completed by January when the whole Jurong system will become fully operative.Today’s preliminary run, which was made at a leisurely pace with a number of stops, was along the nine-mile mainline from Bukit Timah to the site of the Mobil refinery, where the party was greeted by Mr. John R. Kendall, general manager of the refinery and conducted to the company’s office for light refreshments.

3 branch lines

The main line to the refinery is capable of extension to zones earmarked for futher development westwards in Jurong.Three branch lines, yet to be completed form part of the system. One leads to the heavy industries area, another to the wharf area and the third to the National Iron and Steel Mills.

Marshalling Yard

The main line run today was via Clementi Road and Ulu Pandan and entering the Jurong area provided a simulating view of industrial development-completed and under construction stretching over a vast area on both sides of the track.The project called for the building of 22 different culverts of various sizes, eight steel bridges and three tunnels.A marshalling yard, initially consisting of six tracks has been built and provision has been made for further possible extensions.

A godown incorporating a goods shed and a custom office, now being built will be ready by early January.

The new Jurong railway will be open to traffic from Monday, It is expected that the volume of rail transportation from the industrial estate will be 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 tons a year, and train frequency is expected to be seven to ten trains a day.

New Railway

Five years ago the notion that trains might one day run to Jurong, then one of Singapore’s most outlandish spots seemed improbable. True, there was talk of development and some bulldozers were at work – but a railway? Now it has come true. Yesterday the first of what will be many trains steamed ceremoniously along the brand new lines from Bukit Timah to Jurong to inaugurate the latest achievement. It was a little late, the railway having been scheduled for completion in June, but the delay is insignificant.As late as mid-1962 surveyors were still fixing the best route and another six months were needed to cleared squatters. Later the weather proved unhelpful, rain creating quagmires where today 12 miles of track run through five tunnels and across eight bridges and numerous culverts.

Some branch lines to industrial sites have yet to be completed but the system will be “fully operative” by January-about the time the first 3,000 feet of Jurong’s wharves will be ready for its first freighters. The industrial estate will almost simultaneously have gained links with Malaya and the overseas world. Estimates of sea traffic have not been published but the rail figures are fairly firm. The Malayan Railway (which built the line with a $5.5 million loan from the Singapore Economic Development Board) plans to run from seven to ten trains a day into Jurong and expects the line to handle between two and three million tons of freight a year. A cement clinker train service from Perak is about to begin and preparation are being made from regular shipments of iron ore and timber. The Railway anticipates an annual revenue of $2 or $3 million, a formidable return on the investment.

There is only one fly in this apparently excellent ointment. Most of these encouraging estimates were arrived at before Singapore’s separation from Malaysia clouded industrial prospects in both countries. The development of Jurong to the grand goals proposed for it will depended upon various factors, but the size of the market in which it can sell its products is one of the most important. At present it is doubtful whether the Malayan peninsula (now brought so close to Jurong ) is part of the market or not, If the new railway is to serve its full role, the geographical link it has created will need backing by a larger market.

SINGAPORE, Mon – The new Jurong Railway, which is now directly linked with Malaya, was opened to traffic today.A train made two runs – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon,On the first run, it carried 13 loads of clinker for the Pan-Malaysia Cement Works Ltd from the Singapore marshalling yard to the firm’s factory via Bukit Timah.

On the other, it carried another 18 wagons of clinker – which had arrived at Johore Bahru from Ipoh – from Bukit Timah to the firm’s Jurong factory.The Railway Adminstration which is in charge of the traffic said : “We hope later on to carry logs and other raw material from the Federation to Jurong.”

The new railway was built to serve the Jurong industrial complex and last Thursday a cargo train made a trial run over the 12 – mile track between Bukit Timah and Jurong Wharf.

The new track was built with a loan of nearly $6 million from the Economic Development Board.

Engineers from the Board also built tunnels, culverts and bridges before handing the job of laying tracks to the Malayan Railway authorities.

KTMB 125th Anniversary Commemorative Coins

The commemorative coins are legal tender and the specifications are as follows:

Gold Commemorative Coin (proof)

This proof coin is made of gold with 999.9 purity and weighs 7.96 grams. It has a face value of RM100 and will be sold at RM1,200 a piece. The mintage quantity is limited to 150 pieces.

Silver Commemorative Coin (proof)

This proof coin is made of Sterling silver with 92.5 purity and weighs 21.00 grams. It has a face value of RM10 and will be sold at RM150 a piece. The mintage quantity is limited to 300 pieces.

Nordic Gold Brilliant Uncirculated (B.U) Commemorative Coin

The Nordic Gold (B.U) coin has a face value of RM1 and will be sold at RM10 each. The mintage quantity is 15,000 pieces.

The design description of the 125 th Anniversary of Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) commemorative coins is as follows:

The Obverse Side of the Coin

Illustrates the evolution and transformation of Malaysian railways over the last 125 years from coal powered locomotive trains to the Electric Train System (ETS), which is the latest addition to KTM's fleet of trains. The words "Keretapi Tanah Melayu" and "125 Tahun" appear at the upper circumference and the year "1885-2010" at the lower circumference of the coin.

The Reverse Side of the Coin

Depicts the image of the current logo of KTM at the centre of the coin. The words "BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA " as the issuing authority appear on the top circumference, whilst its denomination appears on the lower circumference of the coin.
