GETTING TO TIOMAN
By Air Berjaya Air (Tel: 603-78468228; www.berjaya-air.com) flies several times daily from Subang Airport to Tioman and back, also on Dash 7 (48-seater) aircraft.

Flight lasts about 55 minutes.

Return tickets are priced at RM448 for adults and RM234 for children.

By Road
(to Mersing point) Transnasional buses (Tel: 603-20311430 / 607-7993155) ply the Kuala Lumpur Mersing route several times a day. Buses leave from the Puduraya Bus Station next to the Chinatown area in Kuala Lumpur and you need to physically get your tickets from the ticket counter there.

Buses are normally at 9 am, 10 am, 10 pm and 11 pm and takes 6 hours to Mersing. The bus' LAST stop is the Plaza R & R which is right next to the Mersing Ferry Point.

By Road
(Driving - From KL to Mersing point) If you are driving from Kuala Lumpur, a suggested route would be via Seremban and Kuala Pilah, passing Bandar Muadzam Shah onto Rompin and Endau and into Mersing. This drive takes about 5 hours.

Alternatively, take the North-South Expressway, turn off at Ayer Hitam (Toll charges about RM30), head for Kluang then onto Mersing. This drive is shorter and takes 4 hours.

Parking fee outside the ferry terminal in Mersing is RM8 a night.

By Road
(Driving - From Johor Bahru to Mersing) Taxi fare is approx. RM120/cab per way (charter).

One of the coach service operator is Causeway Llink Express. Depart at 8:00a.m,11:30a.m, 3:00p.m & 6:30pm . These are not frequent though. Alternatively, you can take any bus to Kuantan from Johor Bahru/Singapore but should not be surprised if you get charged the full Johor Bahru-Kuantan (RM25) fare even though you might only be going halfway.

By Ferry Many ferry operators operate boats and ferries between Mersing and Tioman several times a day.

Amongst the most reliable, Blue Water Speedboats (Tel: 607-7995696) operates its first speedboats from Mersing at 7.30 a.m. and its last ones at about 4.30 p.m. depending on tides.

Tickets cost RM35 one way. From Tioman, the first boat leaves at 8.00 a.m and the last at about 4.30 p.m. daily.

Kg Sungai Tiram Sandakan To Become Tidung Tradition Village

SANDAKAN, Jan 2(Bernama) -- The Tidung Welfare and Social Culture Organization of Sabah (Pertisa) is planning to make Kampung Sungai Tiram here as its traditional village in the state.

Its secretary-general Saapilin Yassin said at the moment the focus was to improve the infrastructure in the village including having an organised housing area.

These included setting up a multi-purpose hall, cultural center, police station, primary school and a MARA Activity Center.

"We want when we mention of Kampung Tiram, everyone will know it is a village of the Tidung tribe just like those of other ethnic group in Sabah such as river people of Bukit Garam, Kinabatangan and Sea Bajau people in Semporna," he told Bernama here.

He said the plan was one of the objectives of setting up Pertisa, which was registered on August 28 last year and is currently led by its president Datuk Juslie Ajirol, who is also Libaran Member of Parliament.

Today's couples are seeking new ways to celebrate their union as well as new destinations. You can't go wrong in seeking Malaysia as a honeymoon destination given the current strength of the US dollar against the ringgit and so many beautiful locations in the country to choose from. Whatever your taste, here are Malaysia's top ten honeymoon spots, as in the opinion of the writer.

No 1. Pangkor Laut Island, Perak
"I almost cried when I saw how beautiful God has made this paradise." So said world-famous tenor Luciano Pavarotti of Pangkor Laut Island, who performed at the opening of the island's exclusive resort in 1994. Then, in 1999, Conde Naste magazine voted this privately owned retreat as one of the top ten in the world. The island's Emerald Bay, with its superb sands and water, is a pure paradise for couples to swim and sunbathe. The beach is also where Spencer Chapman made his escape in a submarine from the Japanese during World War II, as recounted in his best-selling novel "The Jungle Is Neutral." The waters of Coral Beach are an underwater splendour with its magnificent coral reefs, while Royal Bay is perfect for windsurfing. Luxurious chalets on the island are a mix of Malay and Balinese architecture, and are romantically set out into the sea or on the hillside. Couples can expect only the best facilities to pamper them, such as jacuzzi, sauna, spa and posh restaurants. Pangkor Laut Island is a forty-minute boat ride from the coastal town of Lumut in Perak State. Lush jungles from its central mountain creep down to the white-coral, sandy beaches hugging the shores, while in the south, the twin peaks of Nenek Si Mukut and Batu Sirau rise to the clouds. Nearby, the Mukut Waterfall cascades down a granite peak. Lovers will be spoiled for choice in selecting a beach for themselves. For quiet strolls, there are trails leading from Tekek, the main settlement, northward to Salang and southward to Genting. For soft adventure, take the cross-island trail from Tekek to Juara on the east coast. Tioman is also a premier diving and snorkelling destination, and there are PADI dive centres in many hotels. For a romantic evening, enjoy a seafood dinner at one of the sea-front restaurants beneath casuarinas in the villages. A five-star hotel in Tekek allows couples to indulge in the pleasures of life.

On the fabled island of Langkawi, there are many areas where lovers can find ultimate peace and privacy. Two favourite enclaves for honeymooners are Datai Bay and Tanjung Rhu. The former is tucked in the northwest corner of Langkawi, and is home to two sophisticated resorts overflowing with luxury, such as spas and décor of volcanic rock. There are exclusive beaches for guests, and from the hotel balcony, newlyweds can admire the awe-inspiring view of the jewel-like sea towards Thailand. Portuguese admiral Alfonso D'Albuquerque stopped at Batu Ferringhi in 1511 before sailing southward to conquer Malacca; St. Francis Xavier made a stopover in 1545; and Captain James Lancaster, founder of the East India Company, came ashore in 1600. Today, honeymooners can choose from sophisticated resorts, action-packed nightlife or exciting watersports along this stretch of beautiful and vibrant beach. Malaysian Orangutan Preservation at Bukit Merah Faces Wrath From Conservationists

Bukit Merah Laketown Resort under the microscope is Orangutan Island in Malaysia's north, billed as the world's only treatment and preservation facility for the endangered mammals.

Care that has been abundantly given to the animals, provided by a staff of seven nurses, is lost on environmentalists who insist that this is hurting instead of helping the orangutans.

The owners of the 35-acre island say the goal of the facility is to return the animals back to their natural jungle habitat, but so far none have been put back into the wild.

The environmentalists take issue with the fact that the primates wear diapers, interact with tourists, and are raised with 24-hour care from a staff of humans.

The majorities of the visitors are excited to play with the animals and are oblivious of the criticism.

"I don't think it is wrong keeping them here. It is a practical solution to save the orangutans and educate our children," said 26-year-old Vikki Kendrick from Britain.

Orang Utan Island is located within the exotic, eco-friendly getaway of Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, a 7,000 acre freshwater lakeside haven in Semanggol, Perak. The Orang Utan Island itself, which was formerly known as Pulau Panjang, comprises a vast 35 acre area, 5 acres of which has been set aside as a research centre for these endangered primates.

Swine Flu Alert - Malaysia expands screening of visitors to all entry points

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has confirmed that no case of “influenza-like” illness with symptoms of swine flu infection has been found in Malaysia.

However, the Government is not taking chances with the outbreak that is already spreading across Mexico to other countries.

The ministry has already expanded its screening of passengers arriving at international entry points like KL International Airport, which it started on Monday, to the ground.

In Rantau Panjang, which borders Thailand, the health department began randomly screening those coming into Malaysia on foot.

“We are doing it as a precaution,” a doctor on site said. He set up an informal unit with five of his subordinates.

The ministry has taken measures to set up hotlines for the public to call for inquiries in Putrajaya and also started a 24-hour monitoring of the situation. The public can call 03-8881-0200/300 for enquiries.

Police personnel at Malaysia’s borders are on high alert to check any signs of the swine flu outbreak sneaking into the country.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said policemen would assist all border-control agencies to monitor for any signs of the disease at all entry points including airports.

“We are working closely with the Health Ministry to monitor the situation and assist in the screening process,” he told reporters after a visit to Hospital Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the 202nd Police Day yesterday.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Ismaiil Merican confirmed yesterday that no case of influenza-like illness with symptoms of swine flu virus had been reported in Malaysia. He said that based on surveillance of influenza-like illness, there had been no reported case.

He added that health officers at KLIA screened 428 passengers and airline crew flying in from areas with cases of swine flu for signs of the infection. Passengers and airline crew, he said, were also been given health alert cards and health declaration forms to fill.

“The screening at all international entry points continued yesterday. A technical committee meeting involving several agencies will also be held today to discuss other preventive measures and an integrated approach for the control of any infection,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Dr Ismail said that in view of the World Health Organisation’s decision to raise the swine flu alert to Phase 4 from Phase 3, which made the current situation just two levels away from a full pandemic, the ministry would continue to advise Malaysians to stay away from affected regions.

“This is particularly when the travel is unnecessary and they are not feeling well. Those who fall sick during their travel should seek medical treatment,” he warned.

In Kuala Lumpur, Bernama reports that the Foreign Ministry had asked all Malaysian missions abroad to continuously monitor and update the ministry on the swine flu outbreak in relation to Malaysians residing or travelling overseas.

“The 60 registered Malaysians residing in Mexico where the swine flu outbreak was first detected and another five in the accredited Central American countries are reported to be safe and free from the virus,” the ministry said in a statement.

The public is advised to report to the Consular Divison of the Foreign Ministry at 03-8887-4000 if they are aware or informed of any cases by their friends, relatives or colleagues currently overseas.

"We need to climb three more places to qualify to the next preliminary round," he said at the Vote For Sipadan Campaign here today. His speech was delivered by his assistant, Bolkiah Ismail.

He said all that a voter needed was a valid email address to cast a vote via www.new7wonders.com.

"By being one of the seven new wonders of nature, it would boost the country's tourism industry, especially Sabah," he said, adding that the last day for voting was July 7.

Pulau Sipadan is now in 14th place in the race to be named one of the new Seven Wonders of Nature.

If the famed diving spot is to remain in contention, it must move up to 11th by July to qualify for the next round of the online election.
