Injured Puppy

Last week a Ms Lee called us quite late at night saying that a group of teenagers had run over a puppy. We could hear the heart wrenching wails of the puppy through the phone and we asked her to immediately rush it to our panel vet in Klang. Luckily the vet took our call and agreed to open his clinic to tend to the puppy. One of the puppy's hind paws was crushed with serious external injuries. The vet said there were also fractures to the bones. The wound was dressed-up and the puppy was put on drips - the external injuries are healing and by the looks of it the puppy is doing quite well. The puppy is now under our care. We are seeking prospective fosterers, adopters and sponsorship for this puppy which may need a couple of months of veterinary care. CRUELTY IN PET SHOPS

Passed-by a premier pet shop recently and saw four dogs that were lethargically lying in their glass enclosures . Went in to see what was wrong and was told by a shop assistant that the air conditioning into these 'glass cages' was not working. A small crack was kept open but this was insufficient for ventilation. The dogs were literally suffocating. When I asked the assistant to remove the dogs and place them in cages inside the shop - she said no one would be able to see them from the outside if they were placed inside the shop. So, it boils down to the fact that the welfare and wellbeing of the dogs did not matter as the paramount concern was making money out of them. The dogs on sale were also young adults and they will be sent back to the breeder as people prefered buying puppies. These dogs will soon go on to become breeding machines. Why do the local councils churn out permits for pet shops to sell dogs whilst at the same time hunt and kill strays? Do not buy and give these mosters a reason to breed and sell.

Abandoned by backyard breeders

For the second time in recent months, breders have dumped their dogs outside of PAWS. This time around. there were nine females and a male and we can safely assume that the sole male was used to service all nine females. Two of the females had a kind of hernia - which we believe could be due to multiple births. Anyway, PAWS which is working very hard towards becoming a no kill shelter agreed to release the dogs to KL Pooch Rescue. MDDB has undertaken the responsibility of paying for the dogs veterinary care as well as neutering all of them. The dogs were taken to one of our panel vets soon after the rescue for a thorough medical check-up. Some are currently being fostered and a couple have already been adopted. We would like to request the adopters to contribute something towards the spaying - to be paid directly to the clinic - this will help ease the financial requirements. The dogs are certainly breeders' dogs because they are not used to being touched by humans and are very frightened of everything that's going around them. This is the sad reality - breeders dogs have little contact with humans and are treated as merely puppy making machines. This is also evident by the female dogs' enlarged vaginas. All the dogs which are Maltese-Terrier mix have also been debarked - meaning that their ability to bark has been surgically tampered with. It is cruel to debark dogs and this practice is outlawed in most civilised countries. Backyard breeders generally debark their dogs because these dogs are kept locked-up secretely in cages stacked one on top of another. So, if 'allowed' to bark there would be a lot of noise due to the discomfort and pain felt by the animals. Please do not buy when you can adopt. There are thousands of destitute dogs that need homes - take them in instead of giving pet shops business which in turn only supports cruel and unethical breeding. Shelter holding an adoption drive on Sunday

DOZENS of puppies and dogs, under the care of canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB), are currently in desperate need of homes.

MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai said adoptions were usually very slow during the end of the year.

“We believe this is due to the festivities and school holidays,’’ said Lai.

She added MDDB hoped that some of the puppies and dogs would be able to find homes at its adoption drive in Summit Subang Jaya this Sunday.

Will be missed: A wake will be held to remember Strong Boy Hee.

“We will be having only one adoption drive this month due to the Chinese New Year celebrations and hope that at least a few of our dogs and puppies will be able to find homes,’’ said Lai.

The adoption drive, which will be held at the shopping center’s main entrance, starts at 10am and ends at 6pm.

Those wanting to donate items such as dog and puppy food, bleach, soap, old newspapers, dog and puppy shampoo, rice and other necessities could drop off the items at the venue.

Meanwhile, Lai also said MDDB would be conducting a wake for one of its canine representatives and ambassador Strong Boy Hee on Saturday.

Strong Boy was killed by a python while on a hike with his owner and her friends in Ampang Jaya on Jan 9.

The wake will be held at Alt.space, which is located at 27-G, Block J, Jaya One, Section13, Petaling Jaya (Same row as fast food outlet Wendy’s).

According to Lai, the three-year-old dog’s demise was a big blow to MDDB and its volunteers.

“He meant a lot to us and we will miss him terribly,’’ said Lai.

She added the wake was open to the public.

“Please come and join us in remembering Strong Boy but please do not bring any donations in cash or kind for MDDB at this event,’’ said Lai.

She said the wake was exclusively held to remember and reminisce about Strong Boy.

YIKES, FOOD CRISIS LOOMING AHEAD.

Dear all,

we have only 15 bags of 10kg rice packets and 30 kgs of kibbles left at the half-way-house. This was from the batch we raised in Oct. Adoption has been slow and the number of dogs at the HWH is overwhelming. We need about 15 kgs of rice and 12 kgs of chicken liver daily to feed our HWH residents and our outside strays. We are also finding it difficult to source for liver on a daily basis due to the big amount and need a freezer and a fridge to store food. We also desperately need a washing machine to wash all the towels that we use on our dogs. Our helper says she cannot manage had washing anymore as not only is the number of towels massive - the bleach is also damaging her hands. We cannot afford to use our funds as we are in the midst of tying-up our debts at the various veterinary clinics where our dogs are being treated. ITS with a very heavy heart that we are announcing that one of our top dogs Mr Strong Boy Hee's demise this morning. As most of you must know Strong Boy is always there at our events beginning from our very first adoption drive in 2009. He had worked very hard for MDDB by helping us raise funds. But it was not only MDDB that Strong Boy helped - whenever there was an activity to help raise funds or awareness for canine welfare - Strong Boy will definitely participate. Strong Boy was a very active and nature loving dog and enjoyed jungle tracking and swimming very much. When he died this morning in a tragic accident involving a python, he was doing what he loved doing best - hiking. It is always painful when a good friend departs - and we at MDDB are currently feeling that pain. Strong Boy will always be remembered and loved. Our deepest condolences to his human Kay and Irene who helped take care of him as well. We are also grateful to have known Strong Boy, who in his three years of existence has done so much for canine welfare. R.I.P sweet baby.

MDDB: Why are you organising the event?

SABRINA: When I moved here two and a half years ago, I was shocked to experience people spitting and hissing at me for walking my dog in what was supposed to be a civilized part of town. I have since seen so many cases of animal abuse (be it cats or dogs) in public, on social media, in the papers, on the news…. And every time I saw or heard about such cases, I felt quite helpless and didn’t really know what I could do to help.
I think I realized six months ago that I couldn’t have been the only person out here who wanted to help but didn’t quite know how to. I didn’t know much about animal welfare here or what has been done and what hasn’t but I knew I wanted to help… and so I began to organize this event in hopes of creating a sort of platform for people to enjoy themselves (and be healthy) but learn at the same time about animal welfare (and things they can do to help). To me, everything is a brand. And with all brands, you need good marketing to generate “business”.
I think most people are so aware of all the atrocities of animal abuse here and they associate the cause itself so much with anger and hate, it has become one of those issues that people generally tend to “sidestep” because they feel uneasy. I feel so uneasy every time I see a horrific abuse case it makes me want not want to read on about it. This doesn’t mean I don’t care, it just means I physically and emotionally cannot handle it. It is heartbreaking and I can understand how angry people are every time there is a case of violence towards animals. But if people feel uneasy and cannot physically bring themselves to even look at what’s happening in our society, how are they supposed to want to make an effort to learn more about how to contribute towards the cause? Since I have been here there have been quite a few memorable abuse cases including the KTM dog, the video of the woman stomping on the cats, the video of the man beating his poodle, the shooting of dogs… and quite recently the Petknode TRAGEDY. As a teacher and someone who works with children a lot of my time, I was instantly aware of all the profanity and hate going around and what kind of message it gives to our children. There were even celebrities passing on the message to everyone to stay angry and that being angry is the only way forward. I think it is important to feel passionate about something, and it is not natural to be unfazed about something so horrific… however, I also think that our younger generations need a bit more nurturing than just being told to be angry.
They, and the rest of us as well, could perhaps make do with a bit of positive reinforcement. It’s like when you’re in any relationship (be it with a loved one, or within your family… or even with your pets). When he/she does something you appreciate, you commend them and they in turn feel fantastic and become a better person for it. So I guess I wanted to do a charity event for a cause I feel very strongly about by reaching out in a positive and proactive way. I think people are more inclined to listen up and learn about the cause if they are in turn feeling great J.

MDDB: What do you hope to achieve?

SABRINA:I hope for our community to learn more about animal welfare, especially our younger generations, as they are our voices of the future. I hope that long-term we are able to really make a difference by providing for our community something fun and meaningful every year – we have already confirmed major sponsors for next year so we can expect to see this be a yearly event.
In terms of the funds we raise on the day itself, I believe we can expect to see growth in the amount as the project continues… by working together with so many fantastic sponsors and partners, we are also able to help build bridges so that we can do more for the cause on the other 364 days of the year. I hope people will see the joys in “Getting Active To Help Save The Animals” and come again year after year!

MDDB: What is your fervent wish for the dogs and cats in Malaysia?

SABRINA: I really wish as a society we are able to provide for the dogs and cats in Malaysia, loving homes, food & shelter if they need it and the right to live in peace. I don’t feel it is right to take the life or abuse any animal and I would hope that all Malaysians can see dogs and cats as beings deserving of compassion and care.

MDDB: How do you think animal welfare groups can be more effective in battling companion animal abuse here?

SABRINA: One thing I have noticed from speaking with all the different NGOs on board is that education really is key. There is so much amazing work being done at the moment by all of the NGOs out there but there are so many people in Malaysia. The lack of resources, funding and manpower makes any brilliant plan difficult to execute fast enough.
I do not know exactly what has or hasn’t been done so far but there is a lot to be said for the sheer willpower of the NGOs. It really is amazing how much strength and passion there is – I think as long as there is hope and will, there’s definitely a way. Educating our society is what I believe everyone agrees is essential – for the sake of our futures, I believe educating our youth is equally important.

Hayley is among three pups rescued from the Puchong pound that's being fostered by Reco and Mikha. Apparently Haley had contracted parvo at the pound but the infection did not flare up - this must have been because the pup must have been one mother's milk up to the point she was caught and dumped at the pound. However, the virus had destroyed a part of her intestines which had to be removed. Haley is now recuperating and will be back on her feet soon. Uncle Ethan is dead

Our Uncle Ethan passed away on Dec 29th.
Uncle Ethan was estimated to be about 15 and had been left tied to a post in Klang in July this year. He was spotted by a young man who handed him over to us. Uncle had various issues such as cataracts, rotting teeth, maggot wounds as well as a big tumour near his underbelly. The vet told us not to operate on him because he may not make it. Uncle went to live with Mikha and Reco and was given a happy life filled with TLC. But the tumour started growing and it came to a stage where Uncle could not move and refused to eat. Caught in a Catch 22 situation, the vet said he would operate as the tumour was growing at a rapid pace. He was operated on yesterday and made it through surgery but died soon after. It is sad but we are happy knowing that Uncle was very much loved in the last few months of his life.

Heartbreaking

Someone from a shelter called us the other day saying that she had received a distress call from PJ. Apparently an old dog had been abandoned at a five foot way and she was lying there hapless and not daring to move. People were feeding her everyday and someone had brought a towel to cover her almost hairless body. We were told that the dog would be euthanised if taken to the shelter. Our hearts bled when we saw the picture and so we assumed responsibility and directed the dog to our panel vet. Apparently she is a poodle of sorts and is very very old - deaf in both ears, blind in one eye and has a cataract in the other. She also had some skin infection. Going by her age - we think she won't last beyond a few months and so are planning to give her a few months of comfort and love before she leaves for leaves. We are saddened - where is her human family? Did they ditch her? Did she wander out and got lost? Anyone recognizes old girl? Ditta's Dog

Ditta called and sobbed a heart out about a dog she's been feeding in Serdang. Being a Muslim, she was only able to feed the unfortunate dog. Our rescuers went and got the dog and it is now in one of our panel clinic. According to the vet, the dogs has some issues including skin disease and compromised immunity. "(message from vet) Anaemic. pale gums, chronic severe skin disease, left back leg limping due to 4th toe swollen and nail bed infection." He has also lost some teeth and although he is quite young. We will do the necessary for this dog until he is up and well for adoption. Meanwhile, offers of fostering or sponsorship is most welcome. This happened at about 10 pm on the date mentioned above. We found a dying dog outside a house in Taman Gembira, Klang. The owners could not wait for the dog to die and they put it in a garbage bag and placed it on the road outside their gate. The dog's cage which was outside the house was also washed clean and both the water and food bowl were turned downwards. It was pitiful to see the dog groan and writhe before it died. We do not know how long it was there. One of our volunteers took photos and gave the dog some water to drink while waiting for the vet to come. We also rushed back to our HWH to grab some towels and bedsheet as well as a carrier to turn it into a sedan of sorts to carry the dog back after the vet had treated it. But the poor dog passed away before we came back with the things or the vet could get there. We feel the dog had chocked on something because there was a hard lump in the throat. The owners had to very expensive cars parked in the porch but yet..................we are so going to the DVS with this.

We are urgently seeking a fosterer for this little puppy who now lives in the same place as Justice. She's a real busybody - very cute busybody - and is very curious about Justice (probably why he can't walk). She 'disturbs' him all the time and Justice is getting annoyed with her. We do not want any untoward incident to happen and therefore looking for a good foster home for the pup pending our next adoption drive. This pup is the last in a batch of three pups rescued from Cheras - and if anyone could remember - it was in response to a distress call from a hawker not long ago. Apparently the evil folks of Pulau Ketam are at it again and this time around the tale told to us is far more sordid than the one where they dumped dogs on an island some years ago.

Apparently, the guy who built the dog traps and helped catch the dogs to be transported to the island is still making use of the traps - but this time around it is to catch dogs and keep them in an enclosure for some months pending euthanasia. (He told us this himself.)

The dogs are put down by the MPK dog catching team which goes there a few times a year. That many dogs kept in one place - we are imagining copulation taking place and newborn puppies growing into young dogs as they await in the enclosures for their grisly deaths. Or are the dogs being bred to make the numbers for every euthanasia session?

This has been going on very quietly. After interrogating several individuals, we were told that the said person was paid RM25 per dog. When we were told this was happening there - some of our members discretely went in to investigate and to bust the euthanasia party if it was going on.

However, they could not find any dog catchers on the island today but as they carried on with their sleuthing, they stumbled upon a morbid sight where several dead dogs were packed in plastic bags and kept in a corner of the island.

The dog-catchers loops were also there. There was some blood and a broken loop appeared to still be around the neck of one of the dead dogs. MDDB cannot let this happen. The last time the fiasco happened there was a plan to neuter and release the dogs - so what happened since?

We immediately contacted PAWS and there is a plan for several NGO to work out a plan and TNRM the dogs there. we have also called the relevant people in MPK and told them to stop the exercise.

We will also get the help of the relevant local personalities to drive in the point that the villagers have no choice but to adhere to the TNRM exercise. They cannot be allowed to continue generating canine-related scandals. PLEASE SHARE THIS AROUND AND BOYCOTT PULAU KETAM UNTIL THE RESIDENTS GROW A HEART AND SHOW SOME COMPASSION FOR THE POOR DOGS.

The dogs did not parachute there - they were brought to the island by the very people who are killing them now. They were given every opportunity to neuter their dogs - but they chose not to.

BOYCOTT PULAU KETAM AND PULAU KETAM PRODUCTS. WHEN YOU ARE BUYING FISH AT THE MARKET - ASK THE FISHMONGER WHERE THE FISH CAME FROM, IF HE SAYS PULAU KETAM, BOYCOTT! PLEASE SHARE THIS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

First he says this is a humane method. When the going gets hot he says otherwise? So which is which?

OPINION WANTED. This was a dog catching 'training exercise' between MBPJ and MPK. Dogs were caught to be brought to be euthanised. The picture you see is deemed as 'a humane way' of catching dogs. Do you all think what you see in the picture is humane? Please share - you response will be feedback for us. This 'training' escapade was organised by Petaling Jaya councilor Anthony Sivabalan Thanasayan who is well known as a euthanasia proponent. He has written some hogwash trying to discredit us and at the same time posting this picture which instead of supporting his ramble only implicates him further.
