22nd National Scientific Conference

The 22^nd National Scientific Conference was officially opened by Y.Bhg Dato’ Dr.Maimunah A. Hamid on behalf of the Director General of Health, Y.Bhg. Dato' Dr. Hasan Abdul Rahman.

There were 332 full registrants and 12 day registrants who participated in this 3 day event, which started on Tuesday the 20^th of September 2011, the venue being Swiss Garden Hotel & Residences,Kuala Lumpur.

Twenty guest speakers were invited giving talks on a wide range of subjects covering all the core disciplines of Medical Laboratory Sciences.(Please see topics below).

Eleven posters were presented from IMR, HKL, PDN, HUSM, Sunway Medical Centre, Selayang and Kajang Hospitals including one from Far Eastern University, Manila, Philippine.

Eight exibition booths were put up during the event among which were from Roche Diagnostics(M) Sdn Bhd, Saujana Saintifik Sdn Bhd,Medigene Sdn Bhd, Straits Scientific Sdn Bhd, Sysmex (M) Sdn Bhd,TUD Sdn Bhd, All Eights (M) Sdn Bhd, and a special booth from Ampang Hospital was put up to collect blood samples for a nation wide study on a hematological reference range for Malaysian, seeing the current reference ranges for FBC for Malaysian are based on Caucasians.

The day started with the registration of participants from 7.30 am till 9.00 am, at the secretariat in grand hibiscus room 1. The Conference began with the opening speech by Y.Bhg.Dato’ Dr.Maimunah A. Hamid hence officiating the 22^nd NSC. After the morning break, the conference commenced with it's key note address on chronic inflammation “the silent killer” by Dr Shaiful Azmi followed by it's first plenary lecture on Delta checks and critical values by Ms Chew Yee Yean that discussed on the reporting mechanism in which laboratory results are reported.

The 1^st selected topic for the conference chaired by Mr Lim Back Seng was on the important step in advancing the health professional education that emphasized on the inter-professional approach by Ms Tan Guat Kee. This was followed by an equally important topic on the future of the profession by Associate Professor Pim Chau Dam titled "Future Directions of Biomedical Sciences Education". Giving a brief evolution and history on how Biomedical Science started in Malaysia and other parts of the world and as well as giving a brief educational structure of the whole Biomedical Science programmes encompassing the history and course structure in Malaysia and Thailand. To sum it all up, a very strong emphasis on the professional body in which health care professionals need to be recognized in, was perhaps the highlight of the topic.

The first day of the 22^nd NSC ended with the professional issues relating to the Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT) in the government service being discussed in a forum facilitated by Mr.Woon Sung Thong, the President of MIMLS. Pn.Noraini Nassir the head of the MLT profession in the MoH and En.Mohd Khairul Adnan Abdullah, the president of the MLT Union participated in the forum. Prof Dr.Umah Rani Kuppusamy of UM and Assoc Prof Pim Chau Dam of USM were also invited to the forum to give their views.

Those who were MIMLS members however stayed back for their annual AGM.The 19th Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences began at 5.45 pm and ended at 6.15 pm. Pn Faridah Robiah Ismail shall be taking over the helm of the institute from Mr Woon Sung Thong as the President of MIMLS for the next two terms as stipulated in the constitution. The Council members who were duly retired were re-appointed for the next term with 2 posts still vacant.

The 13th ASEAN Conference of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (25-27th September 2010).

The 13th ACCLS was organised by MIMLS under the auspices of AACLS supported by MyCEB

Two workshops were held, one pre-conference and another ran concurrently with the plenary session on the first day of the conference.

On Friday 24 September 2010, a one day pre-conference workshop that consists of two modules of 3 hours each were held. They were;

1. "Pan-agglutination" (Intermediate-Advanced)

2. "Improve Your Skills In Blood Group Serology" (Intermediate).

On Saturday afternoon, 25 September 2010, workshop II was held.

The half day workshop was on the "Routine And Not So Routine Serological Techniques" (Basic to Intermediate).

Both workshops were conducted by Mr. Eric Ching ART;MT(ASCP)SBB- Canada.

A total of 27 proffered papers were presented with 4 oral and 23 poster presentations by local and international participants.

There were six plenary sessions, six symposia of 19 topics, 5 Selected Topics and 1 invitational lecture in this conference.

The conference was graciously offitiated by Dato'Dr.Norain Karim, the Head of Pathology Service, The Ministry of Health of Malaysia.
