Ketua PKR Afdlin Shauki menafikan tawaran untuk membantu penduduk Setiawangsa selepas peletakan jawatan Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad didorong agenda politik menjelang PRU16.

Pengerusi Majlis Perwakilan Penduduk Wilayah Persekutuan (MPPWP) Zon Parlimen Setiawangsa itu berkata beliau hanya memainkan peranan sebagai ‘caretaker’ bagi memastikan kebajikan penduduk terus terbela.

Katanya, Setiawangsa tidak boleh dibiarkan tanpa representasi atau perhatian terhadap isu rakyat susulan kekosongan kepimpinan di kawasan itu.

“Tindakan ini dilakukan kerana Setiawangsa mesti terus ada representasi dan dijaga oleh seorang caretaker.

“Di Wilayah Persekutuan, wakil terdekat yang boleh membantu ialah MPPWP kawasan terbabit. Selaku pengerusi MPP, saya memberi jaminan rakyat Setiawangsa akan terus terbela semampunya oleh kami,” katanya kepada FMT.

Semalam, Afdlin menerusi hantaran di Facebook menawarkan perkhidmatan kepada penduduk Setiawangsa selepas Nik Nazmi mengosongkan kerusi Parlimen itu pada 18 Mei lalu.

Nik Nazmi dan bekas timbalan presiden PKR Rafizi Ramli yang turut umum keluar parti itu mengambil alih Parti Bersama Malaysia (BERSAMA).

Pada pemilihan PKR tahun lalu, Afdlin menewaskan Nik Nazmi selaku penyandang ketua PKR Setiawangsa.

Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said the state government and the health ministry are ‘looking for suitable land’ in Petaling Jaya for a hospital to serve the residents of Petaling Jaya, Subang, and Puchong.

Selangor Bersatu Youth has questioned the state government’s inability to secure land for a government hospital to serve the residents of Petaling Jaya, Subang, and Puchong.

Responding yesterday to a post on Threads about the lack of government hospitals in the three densely populated areas, which have a combined population of around 1.2 million, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said the state government and the health ministry were “looking for suitable land” in Petaling Jaya.

“How is it possible that after nearly eight years of leading the administration of Malaysia’s richest state, Amirudin has still failed to resolve a basic issue such as providing land for public healthcare facilities?” said Selangor Bersatu Youth chief Na’im Brundage.

“This excuse is even weaker when we look at the private sector, which has had no difficulty finding sites and successfully building three large specialist hospitals in the area in recent years.

“How can private companies obtain land to build hospitals while the Selangor state government is still struggling to find a suitable site?” he asked in a statement.

Na’im said that under the Land Acquisition Act 1960, the Selangor government has the authority to acquire privately owned land for public interest purposes such as the construction of hospitals, schools, and police stations.

He said the state government had used the act over the past eight years to acquire land for major projects such as the LRT3, MRT2, ECRL and flood mitigation retention pond projects.

“Why has the state government not used the same act to gazette land for the construction of a government hospital for residents of Petaling Jaya, Subang, and Puchong?” he said.

“The people of Selangor are watching closely to see whether this administration truly prioritises the welfare and health of the rakyat.”

The Petaling Jaya parliamentary constituency had a population of 362,290 as of 2020, according to the statistics department. Subang had a population of 478,154, while Puchong had 375,181 residents.

Residents in the three areas seeking tertiary healthcare services currently have to travel to Selayang Hospital and Sungai Buloh Hospital in the north; Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang and Putrajaya Hospital in the south; and Shah Alam Hospital and Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang in the west.

In recent months, Malaysians have found ourselves confronted with headlines that constantly highlight our differences.

Political debates, racial narratives, and social tensions often dominate public discourse, leaving many to wonder whether division has become the defining feature of our nation.

Yet, amid these narratives, I cannot help but ask, “Is this the real Malaysia?”

Over the past few days, the story of nine-year-old Yaashika Steven Dass highlighted in FMT has provided a different answer, one that speaks not of division, but of compassion, generosity, and our shared humanity.

Beyond the headlines and the noise of public discourse lies another Malaysia, one that rarely captures national attention yet reveals itself when it matters most.

It is a Malaysia where empathy transcends differences, where strangers rally around those in need, and where humanity outweighs the labels that often divide us.

Yaashika’s story is a reminder that while our differences may dominate the conversation, they do not define who we are. In our most important moments, Malaysians continue to demonstrate a remarkable capacity for kindness, solidarity, and collective action.

Living with Townes-Brocks syndrome, Goldenhar syndrome, and Pierre Robin sequence – a rare combination of congenital conditions that affect her ability to breathe normally – Yaashika urgently required medical intervention to improve her breathing ability which costs RM78,000.

For her mother S Kogila Vani, a single parent who has spent years navigating her daughter’s complex medical needs, the amount seemed beyond reach. Then something remarkable happened.

Recognising the urgency of Yaashika’s situation, FMT brought her story to national attention, ensuring that her plea for help reached Malaysians across the country with urgency.

Malaysians from all walks of life responded with extraordinary generosity. Donations began flowing in from complete strangers, individuals, families, community groups, professionals, retirees, and students.

Some contributed large sums, while many gave whatever they could afford. Others shared her story across social media and messaging platforms, ensuring that it reached even more people.

Within 72 hours, the RM78,000 target was achieved.

Many offered prayers, encouragement, and words of hope to a family they had never met. The episode served as a powerful reminder that social media, when harnessed for good, can amplify humanity, mobilise communities, and create meaningful change within days.

For Yaashika, the donations represented more than financial assistance. They represented hope. For her mother, they were a reminder that she was not alone.

Yet this story extends beyond one family. It is another example of Team Malaysia answering a call for help, as it has done time and again in moments of hardship and adversity.

At a time when public attention is often focused on what divides us, Malaysians demonstrated what truly unites us. No one asked about race, religion, politics, or social status. They simply saw a child in need and responded with kindness.

This is the Malaysia that seldom makes the headlines – a Malaysia where neighbours help neighbours, communities rally together, and compassion transcends differences.

It is a Malaysia that embodies the spirit of kesopanan dan kesusilaan, one of the five pillars of the Rukun Negara, and reminds us that our shared humanity remains stronger than any division. - FMT

A teacher accused of sexual misconduct at a school in Johor has been transferred to a district education office while authorities investigate the case.

In a statement, the Johor education department (JPN) said it was working with the welfare department to protect the victim and ensure her well-being.

It was previously alleged that the teacher had returned to teaching despite multiple reports lodged over the case, including with the police and the Public Complaints Bureau.

“We will not compromise when it comes to sexual misconduct. Action will be taken against wrongdoers,” JPN said.

It also urged members of the public involved in similar cases to lodge police reports to facilitate investigations.

It was reported in the New Straits Times yesterday that a 12-year-old pupil had admitted to school authorities that she was involved in a sexual relationship with a male teacher at the school.

Maybe time is ripe for Chinese to accept “Malays aren’t racists but merely a frustrated, fed-up lot”

Editor’s Note: Amid DAP loyalist Tony Pua having been summoned for questioning after “more than 80 police reports (so far)” have been filed against him over his outrageous “constitutional monarch bears limited power” incitement, perhaps it’s high time for the Chinese to take a step back by not pushing their luck too far.

Such is the wisdom advocated by digital creator Adrian Lim Chee En who claimed to be inspired by “DAP’s Tiger of Jelutong” the late Karpal Singh to take up law.

THE Malays aren’t racist when they vehemently oppose the recognition of UEC (Unified Examination Certificate exam), oppose uncontrolled pig farming or insist the Chinese Indians read-speak-write proper Bahasa Melayu.

Such is the take of socio-political activist Adrian Lim Chee En who felt that the Malays have actually reached a boiling point yet “many Chinese still refuse to acknowledge such reality due to pride, ego and ignorance”.

“Pride and ego means that these Chinese feel that more money equals smarter, hence the Malays who have less money than the Chinese must be either stupid or lazy,” the commentator known for his progressive advocacy penned in a Facebook post which has since garnered 27K likes, 4.6K comments and 8.4K shares at the time of writing.

Ignorance means that these Chinese do not have any friends beyond the Chinese circle.
The only time these Chinese actually speak Malay or talk to a Malay is when they talk to the Nepali guard at the condominium or the Grab driver or the police officer at the roadblock or the officer at a government office. Yup. That’s about it.

‘Chinese are outnumbered’

Against such backdrop, Lim contended that the patience of Malay folks has been tested to the max or taken for granted for a very long time.

“But patience doesn’t mean ignorance,” warned the former student activist and founder of the coalition Mahasiswa Ganyang Akta Hasutan (a student movement advocating for the repeal of the Sedition Act 1948).

When a small group of “Chinese fighters” try to push for UEC, protest against the closure of uncontrolled pig farming, insist that Chinese and English are more important than Bahasa Melayu, you think the Malays aren’t aware?
The Malays are very fully aware but sometimes choose to be patient for the sake of peace, harmony and stability.

But patience has its limits and when such limits are pushed too far, “it breaks and chaos ensue”, according to Lim.

This led to the digital creator reminding his brethren that with the Malaysian Chinese population currently standing at less than 30%, “the supermajority are the Malays”.

‘Malays aren’t racists’

So when a small group of people decided to be “Chinese fighters”, I don’t think that’s wisdom. It’s plain stupidity.
Even if these “Chinese fighters” succeed in convincing the entire 30% Chinese in the country to support a particular agenda, this particular agenda will never materialise.
Because for every reaction, there’s a counter-reaction. It’s only a matter of time before the other 70% comes back at the 30% Chinese. What we’re seeing in West Malaysia today is exactly the counter-reaction by the 70%.

To prove his point, the former Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) intern turned to the recent tragic accident in Kuala Terengganu which snatched the life of 18-year-old brilliant SPM holder Wah Han Keong.

On the same note, I just read a news of a Malay man driving recklessly, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old Chinese student awaiting a chance to enter university.
I didn’t see a single Malay supporting the reckless Malay driver, neither did I see any Malays ignoring or laughing at the Chinese family.
In fact, the very people who confronted the reckless driver were Malays.
So I don’t believe the Malays are racists or hate the Chinese. They’re just frustrated and fed up seeing the Chinese refusing to integrate/assimilate. – Focus Malaysia

Babysitter arrested over viral child abuse video

SEREMBAN: A 60-year-old babysitter was arrested at her home in Sendayan last night following a viral video showing her hitting and forcing a child to sit outside a house.

Negri Sembilan police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the parents of the four-year-old boy identified their son from the viral video before reporting the matter to the police.

"At 8pm yesterday, the Seremban district police headquarters received a report regarding the abuse incident, which is believed to have occurred at a residential area in Seremban," he said in a statement today.

Alzafny said the parents noticed the incident after viewing a 75-second video recording that was widely circulated on social media.

"The video shows a woman hitting a young boy at the back of a house, and the victim in the recording was confirmed by his parents to be their son," he said.

Initial investigations revealed that the parents had been sending their child to be cared for at the suspect's house, located near their residence, for the past seven months.

He added that the victim was taken to the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital here for further examination and medical treatment.

Alzafny said acting on information, police arrested the woman at 9.45pm yesterday at the scene to assist in the investigation.

A remand application against the suspect will be made at the Seremban court this morning to enable further investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, he said.

He urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Kamarul Ariffin Kamaruzaman, at 06-6033222.

It was reported yesterday that a video showing a child left outside at the rear of a house and allegedly being assaulted by a woman, believed to be the child's babysitter, had gone viral.

The footage appears to show the child crying and screaming after being left outside, before the woman exits the house and scolds the child.

The woman is also seen appearing to threaten and slap the child after reopening the door in response to the victim's loud cries. - NST

Govt offers solar rebates of up to RM3,000 via SuRIA Home

PUTRAJAYA: The government has introduced solar rebates under the Sustainable Rebate and Incentive Assistance (SuRIA) Home programme to ease the public's burden amid the global supply crisis caused by conflicts in the Middle East.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said domestic consumers who install the Enhanced Solar Energy Transition Program (Solar ATAP) system and meet eligibility criteria can receive a rebate of RM600 per 1kWac of solar installation, up to a maximum of RM3,000, equivalent to 5kWac.

SuRIA Home is an incentive launched for those installing solar panels under the Solar ATAP programme, which was rolled out in January.

"Following calls inquiring if there would be any incentives provided, we have decided to allocate a RM120 million incentive from June 1 until December this year," he said.

Fadillah, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said this to reporters after officiating the initiative at the ministry's monthly assembly here today.

Also present were deputy minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad and secretary-general Datuk Seri Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli.

Fadillah said the programme is expected to benefit between 45,000 and 50,000 households with an accumulated solar capacity of around 250MW, expanding residential rooftop solar usage nationwide.

The SuRIA Home programme will be open for solar installations under Solar ATAP operating up to Dec 31, 2026, or until the 250MW quota is filled, whichever comes first.

The implementation of the rebate will begin on June 1, 2026, and will be on a first-come, first-served basis, he said. - NST

The department urged the police to conduct a professional and thorough investigation into the case so that legal action can be taken if the suspect is proven guilty.

At the same time, the department is collaborating with the Social Welfare Department to ensure the student victim is protected and that their well-being is safeguarded.

The allegations claimed that he had allegedly returned to teaching duties despite multiple reports lodged over the case with police, education authorities and the Public Complaints Bureau (Sispaa) since last year.

Acting Johor police chief Deputy Commissioner Hoo Chuan Huat said police detected the viral post uploaded on Facebook by the account "Mohd Fadli Salleh" yesterday.

"Following this, police received a report at 9pm yesterday from the victim's 37-year-old mother, who said the incident occurred last year in the Seri Alam area" he said in a statement today.

According to Utusan Malaysia, its president, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, said all aspects involving ties between the two parties within Perikatan Nasional (PN) were being comprehensively reassessed based on lessons from previous elections.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 — Nine people are expected to be charged in court today after a viral publicity stunt involving flares and reckless driving in Bukit Bintang sparked outrage online, according to New Straits Times.

Police said another six individuals detained in connection with the case will be released and turned into prosecution witnesses.

The suspects were among a group of 15 people — 14 men and one woman aged between 17 and 30 — arrested less than 24 hours after videos of the incident began circulating on social media.

Authorities said the arrests were made between noon and 10pm in Batu Caves, Shah Alam, Kajang and Dengkil following public tip-offs.

Investigators found the group included the 24-year-old owner of a clothing store, several employees and individuals allegedly hired to take part in the stunt. Eight participants were reportedly paid between RM50 and RM700.

Police believe the act was staged to promote the business in conjunction with the clothing outlet’s sixth anniversary campaign in Dengkil.

The group had drawn attention after videos showed individuals igniting flares while riding in the back of a pickup truck along Jalan Sultan Ismail near a fast-food outlet in Bukit Bintang early Sunday morning.

Police also seized a pickup truck, two electric scrambler motorcycles and clothing believed to have been worn during the stunt.

KOTA BELUD, May 22 — Five men who were conducting land surveying work and became stranded across a river due to swift currents in Kampung Melangkap, here, on Wednesday, were rescued in a challenging operation that lasted until Thursday morning.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre received an emergency call at 4.48pm on Wednesday, prompting eight personnel from Kota Belud Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to the scene, located approximately 35km away.

Station Chief Elge Bakuk said upon arriving at the main road near the location at 6.33pm, the firefighters trekked 5km through the jungle and along the riverbank before locating the victims at 12.45am.

He said the operation faced difficulties due to the hilly and steep terrain, as well as the lack of Government Integrated Radio Network (GIRN) coverage and mobile phone reception, which hampered communication throughout the operation.

The personnel’s torches also ran out of battery while the search and rescue operation was being conducted in the dark.

“All victims were successfully escorted out to a safe area at 5.50am before the operation was called off at 9.20am Thursday,” said Elge.

The operation involved a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) with four personnel, an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle with two personnel and a four-wheel-drive Toyota Vigo with two personnel.

Meanwhile, the Pamuntarian-Ulu Mosopoh road in Nabawan, which had been impassable since last Saturday due to flooding, is now open to all types of vehicles, reconnecting residents from six villages to Nabawan town.

Kampung Salarom Baru Village Chief Lumambai Antawor said since the road was submerged, no vehicles could pass through, leaving residents cut off and making it difficult to deliver food aid to the affected areas.

He said the situation also hampered efforts to deliver food supplies to residents.

The travel of teachers and students to two schools — Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pamuntarian and SK Ulu Mosopoh — was also affected.

Last Tuesday, the Nabawan and Tulid assemblymen offices took the initiative to distribute food aid using an alternative method.

“The aid items were transported by vehicle to a certain point before being transferred to another vehicle on the other side of the flooded area. This required manual labour, with people having to wade through shoulder-deep water,” said Lumambai.

The immediate relief was contributed by Nabawan Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin and Tulid Assemblyman Jordan Jude Ellron.

The donations were delivered by Nabawan Community Development Leader Deckson Andipai, representing Abdul Ghani, while Antan Anginsor represented Jordan.

Meanwhile, residents’ representative Ambilek Omopor expressed gratitude to both elected representatives for the swift assistance provided while waiting for follow-up aid coordinated by the District Disaster Management Committee.

He said the committee is chaired by Nabawan District Officer Marshal Anthony @ Idham.

Ambilek, who is also Chairman of Kampung Salarom Baru Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), said besides food aid, residents hope the Pamuntarian-Ulu Mosopoh road can be upgraded soon to resolve the issue of water overflowing during the rainy and flood seasons.

He added that there are several locations along the road that are frequently submerged and rendered impassable to vehicles every time a flood occurs. — Daily Express

KOTA KINABALU, May 22 — The Coroner’s Court here yesterday heard that stressful interrogations by senior students and the subsequent isolation of Zara Qairina Mahathir had directly contributed to her alleged suicide.

Consultant forensic psychologist Dr Chua Sze Hung said it was his opinion that the actions of the seniors the night before Zara was found underneath the school dormitory building were direct factors, when he concluded in his psychological autopsy report that her death was most likely a suicide.

“I would like to highlight that the perceived child-parent conflict is not a direct factor in this suicide. It is one of the many predisposing factors, or known as indirect factors.

“The direct factor here, in my opinion, is the stressful interrogations and the isolation that night or the following morning,” said the 67th witness before Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan.

Asked by conducting officer Dacia Jane Romanus to further explain the nature of a parent-child conflict, Dr Chua said it is inaccurate and commonly misunderstood that a child-parent conflict is something that happens 24/7.

“The pervasiveness of the perceived child-parent conflict is unclear. I would like to highlight as well that I believe that in a normal human relationship, there will be moments of genuine affection,” he said. — The Borneo Post

THREE new corridors covering 47km of bus lanes will be introduced in Kuala Lumpur, marking the next phase of the city’s transit initiative.

Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd (Rapid Bus) had previously rolled out bus lanes in Jalan Kelang Lama (starting August 2024), Jalan Genting Klang (November 2023) and Jalan Ampang (July 2023) via a trial project, and they have since been approved for permanent implementation.

The three new bus lanes will be introduced in Jalan Ipoh (12km) and Jalan Cheras (23km) in the fourth quarter of this year, and Jalan Gombak (12km) in the fourth quarter of next year, Rapid Bus said in a statement in reply to StarMetro’s queries on the new bus lanes.

“The expansion is expected to benefit approximately 21,000 passengers daily across 14 trunk routes, particularly for those travelling between outer urban areas and the city centre.

“More than 101 buses will also be involved in the expansion.

“The operating hours are expected to follow the existing bus lane operating model which is from 6am to 8pm on working days, excluding weekends and public holidays,” Rapid Bus said.

“Existing bus lanes have reduced the buses’ travel times by five to 20 minutes, with average bus speeds increasing from approximately 10km/h to 20km/h during peak hours.

“This contributed to more consistent bus arrival times and better service frequency, while increasing bus ridership across the corridors.

“Jalan Genting Klang recorded the highest increase, with ridership increasing by about 91%, while Jalan Ampang and Jalan Kelang Lama also recorded steady increases in passenger numbers,” it said.

In March, Rapid Bus completed a proof-of-concept trial for an artificial intelligence-powered automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) dashboard camera system, installed on selected buses to monitor bus lane enforcement in existing corridors.

“During the trial period, which started last October, more than 7,000 images under various weather and lighting conditions were captured and analysed.

“The findings showed encouraging detection accuracy rates benchmarked against international standards.

“The system also proved its capability to support enforcement by clearly capturing vehicle registration numbers, locations, dates and times,” it elaborated.

Rapid Bus said the initiative remained under evaluation and required input from Transport Ministry, the Road Transport Department and Kuala Lumpur City Hall before a wider rollout could be considered.

It was earlier reported that the system detected more than 1,300 motorists encroaching into the bus lanes daily.

Rapid Bus added that enforcement was only applicable during the bus lanes’ operating hours, which meant motorists were allowed to use the lanes outside the operating periods. - Star

His Royal Highness said Aidiladha teaches Muslims the values of sacrifice, sincerity and unity of the ummah, as millions of Muslims gather in the Holy Land regardless of rank, race or status, demonstrating a form of unity of immense significance to the Islamic world.

His Royal Highness also expressed hope that Malays and Muslims in the country would remain united, from political leaders to ordinary citizens.

“All quarters should learn from history, where divisions among Malay Muslims created opportunities for external forces to exploit and weaken the power and position of the Malays in their own homeland,” His Royal Highness said.

In the royal message, Sultan Sharafuddin and Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, also extended Aidiladha greetings to Muslims nationwide, especially those in Selangor.

Meanwhile, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said all parties, including Opposition lawmakers, must stop practising “selective loyalty” when defending the monarchy, religion and race.

He said Selangor fully supports the decree by Sultan Sharafuddin, who had called for national unity, inter-ethnic harmony and responsible governance amid attempts to exploit racial and religious sentiments.

Amirudin said the Sultan’s Aidiladha message came at a critical time, when certain quarters were seen stirring communal sensitivities and using the Rulers, religion and race as political tools.

“All parties, including the opposition, must stop the practice of selective loyalty, where the defence of the Rulers, religion and race is only raised when politically convenient, but ignored when it does not serve their interests,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He also warned against remaining silent in the face of attacks on the integrity of the Selangor Royal Institution, saying consistency and responsibility are vital in safeguarding public trust.

He said the Rukun Negara should not be treated as a ceremonial recitation but as a national philosophy that must be understood and practised in full, including its preamble and principles.

He also urged Malaysians to revisit the Federal Constitution and the Proclamation of Independence to ensure that historical narratives are not distorted for political gain.

Amirudin said any attempt to rewrite history, inflame racial tensions or undermine the constitutional framework for political advantage is dangerous and irresponsible.

He added that the Selangor government will continue to uphold moderation, unity and respect for the constitutional monarchy system, in line with the nation’s founding principles.

Amirudin said Hari Raya Aidiladha should also serve as a reminder that the greatest sacrifice in a plural society is the willingness to reject hatred for the sake of national harmony. - Star

Stakeholders urge renegotiation of Bangladesh-Malaysia MOU

Recent talks organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO) on the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers to Malaysia have put forward eight key recommendations to the Bangladesh government to address serious weaknesses in the labour migration system between the two countries.

The talks, held in Dhaka on May 7, were attended by various stakeholders - including private recruitment agencies, civil society organisations, trade unions, and migrant workers.

It was revealed that the existing system was found to be fragile and that Bangladeshi workers were often exploited, despite the system benefiting many.

A representative of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruitment Agencies (Baira) shared the proposal document with Malaysiakini.

Based on the document sighted by Malaysiakini, among the key recommendations put forward was the renegotiation of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Malaysia to ensure a more transparent recruitment process and end the practice of limiting agency selection.

“The practice of limited selection of recruitment agencies has increased costs and created unhealthy competition.

“If possible, blacklist recruitment agencies proven to be involved in syndicates,” said the proposal, which also suggested that medical screenings be limited to approved government hospitals.

Improving digital systems

It also proposed improving digital systems and medical control, including assessing the possibility of establishing an e-wallet system to track migrant worker payments and complementing Bangladesh's Overseas Employment Platform (OEP) system.

On Dec 19, 2021, Malaysia signed an MOU with Bangladesh on the recruitment of migrant workers.

The MOU was aimed at reopening the Malaysian migrant labour market, which had been suspended since 2018, in addition to establishing a mechanism to send Bangladeshi workers to Malaysia in an orderly and legal manner.

However, the MOU drew criticism from recruitment agencies and stakeholders in Bangladesh for two main reasons: firstly, that only 25 to 100 licensed agencies out of more than 1,500 registered agencies were allowed to send workers to Malaysia.

Secondly, although the Bangladeshi government sets a maximum cost of around BDT79,000 (RM2,550), there are allegations that workers have to pay between BDT350,000 (RM11,300) and BDT500,000 (RM16,130) to recruitment agencies.

‘Return to negotiating table’

Meanwhile, an agency owner from Bangladesh, Altab Khan, said the two countries need to return to the negotiating table to resolve the issue of hiring migrant workers, which allegedly involves corruption and misuse of billions of ringgit.

“What we found from the negotiations is that the provisions in the MOU with Malaysia are not equivalent to the agreements signed with other labour-sending countries.

“Bangladesh is subject to different provisions compared to other countries. The proposed criteria for selecting agencies are not accepted by other countries and fail to promote fair recruitment.

“The Bangladesh government is urged to renegotiate with Malaysia to ensure parity in the bilateral agreement,” he said, confirming that he was also present at the negotiations.

Altab was the main complainant who filed a police report on Sept 3, 2024, at the Paltan police station against 103 individuals who were accused of embezzling RM8.36 billion through an organised syndicate.

Among the big names mentioned in the report are former expatriates' welfare and overseas employment minister, Imran Ahmed; former senior secretary Ahmed Munirus Saleheen; former MP Nizam Uddin Hazari; as well as politician and retired army lieutenant-general Masud Uddin Chowdhury.

At least 100 Bangladeshi foreign recruitment agency owners were also named in the report.

The Bangladesh government is still in the midst of conducting a massive investigation, leading to the arrests of Imran and Masud.

Previously, the Malaysian government, through the Human Resources Ministry, had reportedly sent a letter to Bangladesh urging it to stop the investigation, claiming it was unfounded.

The letter, dated April 23, 2025, was sent by a senior Human Resources Ministry official to a senior official at Bangladesh's Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry.

To date, the Human Resources Ministry has not responded to Malaysiakini's request for comment regarding the letter.

Meanwhile, ILO senior programme officer Asif Ahmed Tonmoy, in a statement shared on social media, said the talks successfully brought together various parties to discuss key challenges and potential directions for creating a better governance system of labour migration.

US opposes Strait of Hormuz tolls, vows to get uranium from Iran

President Donald Trump said yesterday that the United States opposes any tolls on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and vowed that Iran will not be allowed to retain highly enriched uranium, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

“We don't want tolls. It's an international waterway. They're not charging tolls right now,” Trump told the reporters at the White House.

Trump claimed Iran is suffering major financial losses because of restrictions on shipping activity.

Asked whether Iran could retain its stockpile of highly enriched uranium under any future arrangement, Trump answered bluntly.

“No, we get the highly enriched; we will get it. We don’t need it. We don’t want it. We’ll probably destroy it after we get it, but we’re not going to let them have it,” Trump said.

Trump reiterated that the US will not let Iran have a nuclear weapon.

“Right now, we're negotiating, and we'll see, but we're going to get it one way or the other. They're not going to have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

Trump said the US is monitoring reported negotiations between Iran and Oman over possible tolls in the Strait of Hormuz, while asserting that US forces maintain complete control over maritime traffic in the strategic waterway.

Asked whether it would be acceptable for Iran to negotiate with Oman on formalising toll charges for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said: “Well, we're looking at it; we hear about it.”

Blockade

Trump went on to claim that the US has enforced an effective blockade in the region.

“We have total control of the Strait of Hormuz, as you know, with our blockade.

“The blockade has been 100 per cent effective. Nobody’s been able to get through. It’s like a steel wall,” Trump said.

Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb 28.

Tehran retaliated with strikes targeting Israel as well as US allies in the Gulf, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement.

Trump later extended the truce indefinitely while maintaining a blockade on vessels travelling to or from Iranian ports through the Strait of Hormuz.

He stated that the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay rulers are limited to specific areas such as Malay customs, Islam, and constitutional roles - including the appointment of menteris besar and consent for the dissolution of state legislative assemblies.

This is not an insult. It is a statement of constitutional fact that every Malaysian should be able to understand.

Those who lodged the police reports likely do not fully grasp the Rukun Negara or the Federal Constitution in their entirety.

The Rukun Negara itself is built on principles of the rule of law and loyalty to king and country - and that loyalty does not mean we must shy away from stating the constitutional truth.

The fact is that Malaysia practices a constitutional monarchy, not an absolute monarchy where the king's every word carries the force of law over every aspect of citizens' lives.

More often than not, the truth hurts - especially those who are comfortable with misconceptions or narrow interpretations.

But stating a constitutional fact is not a crime; it is both the right and the responsibility of every citizen who truly loves this country.

Knucklehead2: Yes, Pua merely stated constitutional facts. If the police think otherwise, then cite the law - no opinions, no whims, no “feelings hurt”. Charge him properly and let the courts decide.

Reports made by people at the behest of half-baked politicians. Police should be allowed to concentrate on matters related to security and crime.

18 months later, medical visa syndicate still under probe

Eighteen months on, investigations into the alleged abuse of medical visas issued to foreign nationals are still underway, having moved from the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) to the police.

The matter, which involved over 20,000 visas, was confirmed by the Attorney-General’s Chambers to Malaysiakini.

“The AGC confirms that the investigation paper opened by Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department’s Forgery Crime Investigation Unit, concerning medical visas involving immigration officers, was received on Nov 27, 2025.

“However, several instructions to conduct further investigations were issued on Jan 9.

“To date, the investigation paper has yet to be referred back to this department to enable a final decision to be made,” said Nor Azizah Aling, deputy public prosecutor for the prosecution division’s general crime and public order unit, in an email to Malaysiakini.

Malaysiakini has contacted the Forgery Crime Investigation Unit for comment and is still awaiting a response.

10 months of EAIC investigations

On Oct 15, 2024, the EAIC announced the formation of a special task force probing alleged misconduct linked to a syndicate involving medical visas issued to foreigners.

After more than 10 months of investigations, the commission recommended to the AGC on July 28, 2025, that criminal charges be brought against immigration officers suspected of involvement in the medical visa syndicate.

On Nov 19, the same year, the AGC instructed police to open investigations into several immigration officers following the EAIC’s recommendations.

The actions stemmed from a Malaysiakini report in October 2024, which exposed allegations involving “big fish” linked to foreign syndicates who had allegedly remained untouched by law enforcement.

The news portal had also submitted a list of individuals allegedly involved in the medical visa syndicate to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

So soon after Pakatan Harapan and Umno traded barbs, including a warning by the prime minister over seat allocations for what could be snap federal and state elections, the Madani government said parties have committed to a full term.

On Sunday, as former PKR ministers and now also ex-MPs, Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, announced their new political endeavour Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama), Anwar Ibrahim, in a desperate address at a Harapan meet at the same time, was warning that if Umno competed against Harapan seats, it would be no holds barred.

But barely two days later, calm seems to have magically returned, with government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil saying coalitions within Madani have reaffirmed their commitment to work together until the end of the parliamentary term.

That’s a rather quick turnaround, but if I were you, I would not consider that set in stone, but rather on sand, which may quickly be blown away by a mere gust of wind.

If conditions are favourable, you can safely bet your bottom dollar, sorry ringgit, that this reaffirmed commitment within Madani, which was on the rocks just a few days ago, will be cavalierly abandoned to gain any advantage. That’s politics for you.

What amazes me, and I am sure many of you too, is how quickly the reaffirmation has been made, although no one is telling us who precisely made it and how, moving from conflagration to calm in a trice - how convenient.

Perhaps Rafizi was right when he said that the Madani coalition was made of “dark lovers” who fought vigorously in public for the benefit of their constituents and to show their courage and conviction, but in the dark kissed and schemed to stay in power to the public’s detriment.

This is cloak-and-dagger stuff. Even if they made out in the dark, that does not mean a long union - a marriage of convenience whose bonds will be broken anytime anyone sees an opportunity. And then the knives will be out.

Umno politics is not just complicated; its reach is extensive, especially for a party in decline. Dr Mahathir Mohamad, an Umno PM who first stepped down in 2003, somehow gained confidence in round two to become Harapan’s PM in 2018. But he refused to hand over power to Anwar as promised.

He did not last, however, but was gotten rid of by former Umno deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, via the notorious Sheraton Move triggered by a defection of PKR MPs led by Azmin Ali - betrayal after betrayal.

Muhyiddin, in typical Umno fashion, declared an emergency to stay in power, but Umno was not to be outdone, eventually gaining power through Ismail Sabri Yaakob in August 2021 when Muhyiddin resigned after an Umno faction withdrew support for him.

Well, the rakyat must have gotten tired of this betrayal after betrayal and gave Umno only 26 seats in the 15th general election in November 2022. Anwar, himself a former Umno deputy prime minister, got to form the government because his coalition had the largest number of parliamentary seats.

He wasted no time in partnering with Umno, bringing his old friend Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as first deputy prime minister, sidelining his own deputy Rafizi in the process, who had worked tirelessly for PKR. Even PKR was sidelined with Umno getting plum appointments in the cabinet.

Somehow or other, all charges against Zahid were dropped with the infamous discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) and even for those, there is a move to get an unconditional acquittal.

Anwar seems closer to Umno than to PKR, and the schism within PKR widened, leading to Rafizi and Nik Nazmi striking out on their own, with some estimating a support of eight other MPs to make a total of 10 dissenters.

The fact that they have a political party is a major threat, not only to PKR but to the entire Madani coalition, making them a true third force who could stir and even shake things up further in this weird cocktail of happenings.

Putting ties to the test

Perhaps that could be the real reason for postponing elections, in addition to the really volatile international environment in terms of the Iran war, rising oil prices, inflation, and a host of imponderables from a madman called Trump.

So, by tying himself to the Umno boat, Anwar has chosen a rather leaky vessel, which the public has soundly rejected in the last two rounds - from 88 seats (2013) to 54 (2018) and 26 (2022) - for an unprecedentedly bad record.

Umno needs Anwar and Harapan more than they need Umno, but beware, the moment Umno doesn’t need them or thinks it doesn’t need them, Harapan will be dropped like a hot stone - no alliance with Umno will last for long.

The schism between the two will start soon. The general election has to be held by the end of February 2028, but the Malacca and Johor state elections are due by February and June 2027.

It looks like it might be easier to just have the two state elections separately and move on to reduce the inevitable conflict. Also, that will be an opportunity to gauge how much support Madani will have and whether its tenuous links with Umno will still hold.

We have a rocky ride ahead, folks, with a wild card called Bersama, which threatens to pull all of us together. It may be a bit too early for that, but who knows? Stranger things have happened. Who thought Harapan had a hope in 2018?

Shattered reputation: Cost of MACC's IJM probe

The MACC says it is investigating an alleged RM2.5 billion money-laundering scheme involving IJM Corporation Berhad.
It is learnt that the MACC is also probing suspected manipulation of the company's share price. When contacted, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that an investigation into the company is underway.
The probe follows an investigation by the United Kingdom's Serious Fraud Office (SFO) into suspected money laundering and corruption.

The MACC is collaborating with the United Kingdom’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) in an ongoing investigation involving IJM Corporation Bhd over financial transactions and overseas investments amounting to approximately RM2.5 billion.
(Then) MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said both agencies are working closely together and are required to follow specific procedures in the process of gathering information and evidence.
“I don’t think it should be a problem because both agencies have their own mandates in investigating the case. So we need to ensure that the cooperation benefits both sides.
“So, we’re in the midst of exchanging information now, not yet evidence. My officers are currently communicating with the SFO,” he said in a special interview with several media organisations.

These excerpts, published 30 days apart, repeated in between, quoting the then-MACC chief repeating a narrative designed to amplify cross-border transactions - serious enough, it seemed, to warrant the involvement of government agencies in both countries.

The figure mentioned – RM2.5 billion – and the investigations were enough to rattle an acquisition, but after the dust finally settled, the whole scenario took a different turn – the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) was dragged to justify the action.

Ten days after Azam Baki’s retirement, it is obvious that such a chronicle did not exist – it was concocted for reasons better known to the MACC and its former chief.

On Wednesday, Azam’s successor, Abdul Halim Aman, confirmed that the SFO had never conducted any investigation related to the alleged flow of funds.

The Edge reported that he also confirmed that the MACC’s investigation into allegations of RM2.5 billion in money laundering linked to IJM Corporation Berhad was also found to be baseless.

This, he said, was after the MACC conducted joint investigations with Bank Negara, the Inland Revenue Board, and the SFO.

‘No further action’

Last week, the MACC cleared IJM chairperson Krishnan Tan and classified the case as “no further action” after finding no elements of criminal conduct, misconduct, or breaches of corporate governance.

“The investigation found that it involved minor assets in the form of legitimate financial investments through international banking institutions and managed professionally through lawful channels,” Halim was quoted as saying.

So, hundreds of costly man-hours paid for by the people were wasted on an investigation into a non-existent transaction, prompted by an anonymous claim?

Do our authorities take action once a report is lodged?

Did IJM ever have RM2.5 billion to launder?

Do they chase frivolous claims, or have they adopted an “arrest first, investigate later” policy?

Exercise in futility

The answers Halim provided are the perfect riposte to the claims and MACC’s probe: if there was no money to launder, all other allegations fall.

The arrest, the questioning, the almost-daily media briefings were part of a bigger drama, but it turned out to be an exercise in futility.

The IJM saga is not merely a bureaucratic misstep; it is a case study in how institutions can squander credibility by chasing shadows.

When the MACC trumpeted cross-border cooperation with the SFO, it was not just amplifying the seriousness of the allegations -- it was borrowing legitimacy from a foreign watchdog to bolster its own narrative.

That narrative has now collapsed, leaving behind a trail of wasted man-hours, reputational damage, and public cynicism.

The irony is stark: an agency tasked with safeguarding integrity ended up undermining its own. By staging arrests, issuing daily briefings, and invoking phantom billions, the MACC turned the investigation into a theatre.

And when the curtain fell, the audience - Malaysians footing the bill - were left wondering whether the performance was ever about justice, or simply about optics.

How credibility is built

This episode should force a reckoning. If anonymous websites and unverified claims can sway enforcement agencies, what does that say about their thresholds for evidence?

If they can invoke foreign partners who were never involved, what does that say about their respect for truth?

And if they can waste public resources so casually, what does that say about accountability to the very people they serve?

The lesson is clear: credibility is not built on press conferences or borrowed authority. It is built on diligence, restraint, and the courage to say “no case” before reputations are dragged through the mud.

Until our institutions learn that distinction, Malaysians will continue to watch investigations unfold not as instruments of justice, but as episodes in a long-running period drama where the plot is thin, the actors overplay their roles, and the audience is left paying for the ticket.

And here lies the real damage: the MACC’s reputation now lies in tatters, not because it failed to catch a criminal, but because it chased a crime that never existed.

In doing so, it has shown that the greatest threat to public trust is not corruption itself, but the spectacle of an anti-corruption agency mistaking theatre for truth. - Mkini

Saifuddin gesa tadbir urus berperikemanusiaan, rakyat bukan sekadar angka

Ahli Parlimen Indera Mahkota berkata tadbir urus itu bagi memastikan rakyat dibantu secara adil, saksama dan bermaruah.

Saifuddin Abdullah turut gesa sistem kebajikan negara disusun semula dengan alasan terlalu banyak agensi, organisasi dan yayasan di peringkat persekutuan serta negeri.

Ahli Parlimen Indera Mahkota Saifuddin Abdullah berkata pentadbiran negara perlu beralih kepada tadbir urus lebih berempati dengan memastikan rakyat tidak dilayan sekadar sebagai angka, tetapi insan perlu dibantu secara adil dan bermaruah.

Beliau berkata prinsip ‘tadbir urus berperikemanusiaan’ perlu menjadi asas kepada pentadbiran kerajaan, perkhidmatan awam, sistem kebajikan dan pelaksanaan undang-undang supaya tiada rakyat tercicir, terpinggir atau dizalimi.

Menurut bekas menteri luar negeri itu, pendekatan berkenaan penting bagi menjadikan Malaysia sebuah negara yang rakyatnya bukan sahaja menikmati perkhidmatan kerajaan yang bermutu, tetapi turut merasa selamat, dihargai dan yakin terhadap masa depan mereka.

“Rakyat yang memerlukan bantuan mesti disantuni dengan proaktif, empati, inklusif dan saksama.

“Rakyat adalah insan, bukannya perangkaan,” katanya dalam tulisan di ruangan ‘Merentas Ruang’ diterbitkan Sinar Harian.

Tulisan itu menghuraikan tonggak ketiga Konsensus Nasional Baharu yang dibawa Ahli Parlimen Larut Hamzah Zainudin iaitu ‘tadbir urus berperikemanusiaan’.

Dua tonggak lain adalah ‘matlamat bersama’ dan ‘kemakmuran bersama’.

Saifuddin turut menggesa sistem kebajikan negara disusun semula, dengan alasan terlalu banyak agensi, organisasi dan yayasan di peringkat persekutuan serta negeri, namun masih ramai rakyat tidak menerima bantuan sepatutnya.

“Negara mempunyai terlalu banyak agensi, organisasi dan yayasan kebajikan persekutuan dan negeri. Tetapi masih ramai tidak mendapat bantuan sewajarnya. Ia mesti disusun semula,” katanya.

Menyentuh aspek undang-undang, Saifuddin berkata rakyat berdepan masalah perundangan mesti dibantu secara adil tanpa amalan pilih bulu dalam siasatan, prosiding mahupun keputusan.

Saifuddin turut mencadangkan penubuhan Suruhanjaya Undang-Undang bagi menilai dan memperbaiki percanggahan antara perundangan persekutuan dan enakmen negeri, selain meneliti undang-undang lapuk atau tidak selaras dengan Perlembagaan.

“Suruhanjaya itu juga boleh membantu dalam penyeragaman serta penggubalan undang-undang yang lebih sesuai dengan keperluan semasa,” katanya.

Dalam pada itu, beliau juga menekankan keperluan konsep perundingan atau syura lebih tepat berbanding sekadar ‘libat urus’ dalam memperkasa tadbir urus baharu.

“Ia perlu melibatkan kerajaan, sektor swasta dan masyarakat sivil sebagai rakan pembangunan melalui amalan perundingan sebenar.

“Langkah itu menuntut penyertaan bermakna, perwakilan dan penghakupayaan, bukan sekadar proses kosmetik atau melengahkan keputusan,” katanya. - FMT

Polis tahan seorang lelaki bagi membantu siasatan berhubung kes cabul membabitkan seorang murid di kawasan Seri Alam, Johor Bahru susulan satu dakwaan yang tular di media sosial, semalam.

Pemangku Ketua Polis Johor, Hoo Chuan Huat, berkata pihaknya mengesan hantaran di Facebook oleh akaun ‘Mohd Fadli Salleh’ berhubung kejadian itu.

Menurutnya, polis menerima laporan daripada ibu mangsa berusia 37 tahun pada 9 malam susulan hantaran tular terbabit.

“Pengadu memaklumkan kejadian cabul itu berlaku pada 2025 di kawasan Seri Alam, Johor.

“Bertindak atas maklumat itu, sepasukan polis daripada Bahagian Siasatan Jenayah IPD Seri Alam menahan seorang suspek lelaki berusia 28 tahun pada 10.30 malam tadi bagi membantu siasatan,” katanya, menurut Harian Metro.

Menurutnya, hasil ujian saringan awal air kencing mendapati suspek negatif dadah selain tidak mempunyai sebarang rekod jenayah lampau.

“Kes disiasat mengikut Seksyen 14(a) Akta Kesalahan-Kesalahan Seksual Terhadap Kanak-Kanak 2017.

“Orang ramai dinasihatkan tidak membuat sebarang spekulasi atau mengeluarkan komen yang boleh mengganggu proses siasatan,” katanya.

Terdahulu, Mohd Fadhli mendedahkan kejadian terbabit berlaku pada September tahun lalu membabit seorang guru dan murid perempuan yang ketika itu berusia 12 tahun.

Menteri Pendidikan Fadhlina Sidek dalam satu kenyataan di Facebook kemudiannya berkata kementerian menyerahkan kepada pihak polis untuk menjalankan siasatan berhubung dakwaan berkenaan.

PAS Selangor menghormati pandangan akar umbi yang mahu calon parti itu mewakili Perikatan Nasional (PN) di Parlimen Gombak, kerusi ditandingi Bersatu sebelum ini.

Bagaimanapun, Pesuruhjaya PAS Selangor, Ab Halim Tamuri, berkata soal agihan kerusi dan jumlah kawasan akan ditandingi pada PRU16 belum dimuktamadkan kerana keputusan akhir di tangan pimpinan pusat.

“Setiap usul adalah hak Pemuda dan akar umbi PAS di kawasan masing-masing. Dalam PAS, kita beri kebebasan untuk mereka menyuarakan pandangan.

“Kita tidak boleh sekat cadangan akar umbi kerana mereka bebas bersuara, itu demokrasi dalam PAS. Namun, pimpinan PAS pusat akan memuktamadkan keputusan akhir dan kita akan patuh serta akur,” katanya kepada FMT.

Media pada 17 Mei lalu melaporkan Pemuda PAS Gombak menuntut calon parti itu diberi peluang bertanding kerusi Parlimen dan semua DUN di bawahnya pada pilihan raya akan datang.

Ketua Penerangannya Suffi Kamari dilaporkan berkata tuntutan itu berdasarkan realiti politik semasa dan kekuatan jentera peringkat akar umbi yang dilihat mampu menjadi formula baharu untuk merampas semula kerusi berkenaan.

Katanya, kekalahan Pengerusi PN Selangor Azmin Ali di Gombak pada PRU15 menunjukkan pendekatan lama meletakkan calon bukan daripada PAS di kawasan berkenaan perlu dinilai semula.

Menteri Besar Selangor Amirudin Shari yang mewakili Pakatan Harapan (PH) merampas kerusi itu daripada Azmin dengan majoriti 12,729 undi.

Nafi tunggang isu teguran sultan

Dalam perkembangan lain, Halim menafikan dakwaan PAS cuba menunggang isu teguran Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah berhubung penternakan babi terhadap wakil rakyat DAP.

Beliau berkata, pendirian PAS mempertahankan institusi diraja konsisten sejak dahulu dan bukan bermotifkan politik, termasuk penganjuran himpunan mempertahankan institusi raja, Islam dan kepentingan Melayu di Shah Alam, minggu lalu.

“Rakyat perlu faham institusi raja wajib dihormati dan dipatuhi. Nasihat diberikan untuk kebaikan rakyat. Saya ingatkan semua wakil rakyat dan masyarakat tidak mengeluarkan kenyataan yang boleh menimbulkan kemarahan atau rasa tidak selesa,” katanya.

Kira-kira 5,000 peserta menyertai Himpunan Daulat Tuanku di pekarangan bangunan Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri (SUK) Selangor yang turut disertai ahli PAS dan pemimpin Umno, minggu lalu.

A former deputy unity minister has hailed Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari’s call for parties not to practise selective loyalty to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, calling it courageous and rare.

Ti Lian Ker said that in a polarised political landscape filled with extreme rhetoric, Amirudin had chosen to “speak based on principle, not political market demand”.

“Whether one agrees with his politics or not, the courage to speak consistently for national stability and social harmony deserves recognition and respect.

“Malaysia needs more leaders willing to defend principles even when it is unpopular – not leaders who merely follow the demands of political theatre and populist sentiment,” he said in a Facebook post.

Amirudin said yesterday that certain parties would use the pretence of defending the royal institution, race, or religion when they were actually looking to bolster their political position.

These same quarters change their tune when the situation is unfavourable to their interests, he added.

Amirudin was believed to be referring to Perikatan Nasional election director Sanusi Nor, who was charged in 2023 with insulting Sultan Sharafuddin and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Sanusi, the Kedah menteri besar, was initially charged with two counts of sedition, but was acquitted of the charge involving the Selangor ruler after apologising to the sultan.

Earlier this week, Sultan Sharafuddin called for DAP assemblyman Wong Siew Ki and former DAP leader Ronnie Liu to better understand the Rukun Negara and respect the royal institution, following their response to his call for a complete end to pig farming in the state.

DAP’s former Damansara MP Tony Pua then said the powers of the monarch were strictly limited to defined aspects such as Malay customs, Islam, and constitutional roles, prompting brickbats from Umno and PAS leaders as well as a police investigation.

Ti warned against using race, religion, or institutions as an excuse to seize, exploit, loot, or legitimise rent-seeking practices for the benefit of the elites or certain groups.

He said the real struggle was not about who shouts the loudest in the name of race, religion, or royalty, but who governs with honesty, responsibility, and integrity for the sake of the people.

“Exploiting public sentiment in the name of ‘struggle’ is itself contrary to the moral and religious principles of justice, trust, and accountability,” he said. - FMT
