ISTANBUL (Bernama-Anadolu): Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday urged the United States and Iran to consider extending the 14-day ceasefire beyond its Wednesday deadline and "give dialogue and diplomacy a chance".

Dar made the remarks during a meeting with US Charge d'Affaires in Islamabad Natalie Baker, Anadolu Ajansi reported, quoting a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

The two discussed the latest regional developments, with Dar stressing Pakistan's "consistent emphasis" on dialogue and diplomacy as the "only viable" path to address challenges and achieve lasting regional peace and stability.

He also stressed the need for engagement between Washington and Tehran, calling for an extension of the ceasefire.

Baker conveyed Washington's "appreciation for Pakistan’s constructive and positive role in promoting regional peace and facilitating dialogue," the statement said.

Hostilities in the region escalated after the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on Feb 28. In response, Tehran carried out retaliatory strikes on Israel and other regional countries hosting US assets.

Pakistan hosted talks between the US and Iran on April 11 and 12 after brokering a 14-day ceasefire on April 8. The ceasefire is set to expire on Wednesday evening, Washington time.

Efforts for another round of negotiations are underway, though uncertainty remains.

US President Donald Trump says it is "highly unlikely" that he will extend the ceasefire, adding that the Strait of Hormuz will remain blocked until a deal is reached.

Malaysia joins roundtable session on Straits of Malacca issues at Singapore Maritime Week 2026

SINGAPORE (Bernama) -- Malaysia took part in a roundtable session in Singapore on Tuesday to discuss the current situation in the Strait of Malacca, in line with its commitment to ensuring that freedom of navigation in the area continues to be safeguarded.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who attended the closed-door discussion, said the session was held in conjunction with Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2026.

"Malaysia, as a littoral state with responsibilities over the Strait of Malacca, remains committed to ensuring both freedom of navigation and freedom of transit in the strait.

"As a sovereign nation and a member of the International Maritime Organisation Council, we are committed to a rules-based system in which every member state plays its role and respects international law,” he told Bernama.

He said this when met after the opening ceremony of SMW 2026 at the Suntec Convention Centre here.

In a separate development, Loke also said that final works on both Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link stations at Bukit Chagar and Woodlands North are progressing smoothly.

He and Singapore’s Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow visited the Woodlands North station on Monday to review the current status of the project.

"To ensure the project can commence next year, preparations on both sides must be well coordinated.

"I have also invited (Siow) to visit the Bukit Chagar station to ensure proper alignment and coordination so that the project can be completed on schedule,” he said.

The RTS Link project, expected to begin operations in January 2027, will be able to carry up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, connecting Bukit Chagar in Johor and Woodlands North in Singapore in just five minutes. -- BERNAMA

Lorry driver arrested for alleged drink-driving

A lorry driver was arrested in Sungai Petani, Kedah, today after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police.

Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan said the man, in his 30s, was arrested during an operation held at about 1pm, Harian Metro reported.

Policemen had stopped the lorry after suspecting that the driver was drunk, which was confirmed in a breathalyser test.

The suspect was also alleged to have been in possession of two fake driving licences.

Hanyan said the man will be brought to the Sungai Petani magistrates’ court tomorrow to be remanded, while the lorry has been seized.

Investigations are being held under Section 45 of the Road Transport Act for driving a vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit. - FMT

UM students’ group cries foul after cops allegedly halt anti-graft forum

A Universiti Malaya students’ group has alleged that policemen barred a forum on integrity and corruption organised by several UM student bodies from proceeding tonight.

The Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) said the forum was supposed to be held in front of Dewan Tunku Canselor, but they were disrupted by nearly 30 policemen while heading to the venue.

As the students attempted to carry on with the forum from the spot, Umany said, two police vehicles flashed lights at the group, purportedly hoping to disrupt the speeches being made.

FMT has reached out to the police and UM for comment.

“This created an atmosphere of intimidation, suppressing the rights of students to assemble and advocate for academic freedom,” Umany said in a statement.

“Umany reiterates that the right to assemble is a fundamental civil liberty. The authorities have neither the right nor justification to restrict this freedom, nor should they suppress students’ academic freedom on campus.”

The forum was supposed to start at 8.30pm outside Dewan Tunku Canselor, and it was understood that it would discuss the shareholding allegations against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Azam Baki, among other topics. - FMT

Julau MP Larry Sng tonight defended premier Abang Johari Openg’s claim that only Gabungan Parti Sarawak understands the state’s culture and politics.

Sng said the crux of the issue lies in who decides the future of Sarawak – the country’s administrative capital, Putrajaya, or Petra Jaya, where the premier’s office is located.

He said all national parties from the peninsula “will have their political masters in Putrajaya”.

“Sarawakian leaders from national parties have no real autonomy in decision-making. Their hands are tied,” the Parti Bangsa Malaysia president said in a Facebook post.

He said the lack of autonomy by Sarawakian leaders from national parties makes the appeal for local-based parties far more attractive.

“Sarawak has shown the way that they can do things better, and Sabah is following their lead,” he said.

On Monday, a PKR vice-president from Sarawak labelled Abang Johari’s claim as inaccurate.

Roland Engan said GPS, chaired by Abang Johari, is not the only party with a firm grasp of the matter.

“Sarawakians are part of national parties (in the state) and are led by those who respect the autonomy provided for by the Malaysia Agreement 1963,” Roland, who is also the Sarawak PKR chief, said.

Abang Johari had said “only the people of Sarawak truly understand our culture and our politics” when he announced that GPS would field candidates in all the constituencies in the upcoming state election.

He also said GPS does not want parties from outside Sarawak to “disrupt” the state, as it is cooperating well with national parties in the federal unity coalition. - FMT

Duo claimed they could halt MACC’s Revenue Group probe, court told

The two corporate figures are among several named in a Bloomberg report in late February about a so-called 'corporate mafia' involving MACC.

The Kuala Lumpur sessions court was told that the offer to halt the MACC probe into Revenue Group Bhd was subject to the pair’s terms.

PETALING JAYA:

The Kuala Lumpur sessions court was told that two corporate figures allegedly linked to the so-called “corporate mafia” claimed that they could stop an investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission into Revenue Group Bhd.

This was disclosed in a police report filed by Revenue Group co-founder Brian Ng, which was read out in court today, The Edge reported.

Brian and his brother, Dino, are jointly charged with fraudulently disposing of a company asset in 2018.

In the report lodged in March 2023, Brian claimed the offer to halt the MACC probe was made by two individuals named Chong Loong Men and Francis Leong, subject to his agreement to their terms.

The report said the offer was made during a meeting in Publika on Feb 4, 2023 over a corporate dispute involving Leong and Dino.

“Chong and Leong also stated that, as a gesture of goodwill, they would instruct MACC to return me and my brother’s cellphone the following Monday.

“I felt scared and worried because Chong and Leong indirectly said that MACC was under their control and would follow their instructions or collude with them in this corporate dispute,” said the report.

Lawyer Amer Hamzah Arshad, representing Brian and Dino, read out the police report while cross-examining prosecution witness Eddie Ng, a co-founder and former chairman of Revenue Group.

Eddie said he was unaware of the meeting, but confirmed bringing Leong into Revenue Group as an executive director on Jan 17, 2023.

During the trial on Monday, the prosecution witness denied bringing Leong into the company to muscle out Brian and Dino from Revenue Group through a “hostile takeover” of the firm.

He admitted to not carrying out background checks on Leong before recommending his appointment, but disagreed that this constituted gross negligence.

Brian and Dino were charged in March 2023 with fraudulently disposing of a Toyota Vellfire, an asset belonging to Revenue Group, without the approval of the company’s board of directors. The car ownership was allegedly transferred to Dino.

Brian was previously chief operating officer of Revenue Group while Dino was chief technology officer. The brothers were also executive directors.

Allegations of a so-called “corporate mafia” involving MACC emerged in a Bloomberg report in late February.

The report claimed that a network of businessmen and MACC officers used raids and investigations to pressure executives into selling shares in targeted companies, forcing takeovers.

The Bloomberg report had also named Chong and Leong.

The Cabinet has since ordered the police, the Securities Commission, MACC and the Inland Revenue Board to conduct a thorough investigation into the claims without limiting the scope to people currently under scrutiny.

Businessman Victor Chin, who has made several allegations about the scandal, has filed a lawsuit over the matter.

Is the Vellfire dispute no longer an issue, asks judge

During cross-examination, Amer asked Eddie about a civil suit filed by Revenue Group against the Ng brothers, who had also filed a counter claim against Eddie.

The lawyer pointed out that the suit, involving the Vellfire at the centre of the charges against Brian and Dino, had been discontinued, which Eddie confirmed.

Amer: The Toyota Vellfire was the subject matter of the suit?

Eddie: Yes.

Amer: And the matter was settled?

Eddie: Yes.

This prompted judge Rosli Ahmad to ask: “Does this mean the company has already settled the vehicle dispute? So it is no longer an issue?”

Deputy public prosecutor Law Chin How then said they were aware of the suit’s settlement, and the prosecution had two months ago received letters of representation from Brian and Dino, who sought a discharge.

However, Law said the Attorney-General’s Chambers decided to proceed with the charge against them, though “there is nothing stopping them from sending another letter of representation”.

Amer’s fellow lawyer, former MACC chief Dzulkifli Ahmad, then said they would be filing a second letter of representation to the AGC next month.

The mechanic who grabbed headlines after coming to the aid of a stranded motorcyclist recently has once again shown that not all heroes wear capes.

The mechanic, known only as “Abang Usop”, declined the RM3,000 that Dicky Yau gave him today, after Yau received more than RM5,000 in public donations.

People donated money to Yau after a TikTok video about the mechanic’s kindness, and Yau having only a balance of RM176 in his Touch ‘n Go e-wallet, went viral.

Yau, a single father, had promised on Saturday to give half of the public donations he received to “Abang Usop”, so that he could help others in need.

However, the mechanic had other plans.

“I am returning the cash to you,” he told a visibly surprised Yau, who tried his best to reject the money that was placed in his hands.

“You have a child who is going to school. I am helping you,” he said in a new TikTok video.

Yau could be seen tearing up, and the two men embraced.

Screenshots from the TikTok video posted by ‘Abang Usop” that garnered more than 600,000 likes and over 18,000 comments.

In the original TikTok video, “Abang Usop”, who goes by @minyakhitamjalanan, said he was called at about 12.30am to fix a motorcycle after its chain snapped and the front sprocket went missing.

He quoted a total fee of RM145, comprising RM25 for the front sprocket, RM80 for the chain and RM40 for labour.

After completing the repair, he noticed that Yau had a remaining balance of RM176 in his e-wallet and asked if he would still have money for food after paying him.

Yau appeared hesitant but repeatedly insisted on paying the full amount. However, the mechanic told him he would not have to pay. Overcome with emotion, Yau embraced him.

Netizens flooded the comments section with praise, hailing the mechanic’s empathy and generosity. The video garnered more than 600,000 likes and over 18,000 comments. - FMT

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must move away from broad-based subsidies and price controls, and instead focus on managing supply, prioritising spending and reducing reliance on external resources amid ongoing supply constraints, says economist Dr Nungsari Ahmad Radhi.

The Khazanah Research Institute chairman said current challenges were fundamentally driven by supply shortages – particularly in energy and essential goods – rather than price movements.

"Rather than debating prices, the real issue is supply. We need to stretch what we have and manage it better," he told reporters on the sidelines of the Securities Commission–Asean+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (Amro) Regional Economic Outlook Seminar: Asean at a Crossroads here today.

His remarks echoed earlier calls by Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong for prudent fuel consumption to extend the country's energy buffer beyond June, while underscoring fiscal constraints and the need to reprioritise spending.

Nungsari said it was unrealistic to continue spending billions to sustain existing subsidy mechanisms under current conditions.

"We cannot keep spending billions just to maintain the current system. The priority now is to extend our reserves and ensure essential supplies last longer," he said.

He added that limited fiscal space would require policymakers to make difficult trade-offs, including reallocating resources and directing support to the most affected sectors, particularly small businesses facing rising operating costs.

Meanwhile, Nungsari, who is also a member of the National Economic Action Council, stressed the need to reduce import dependency, adding that Malaysia still relied on external sources for critical supplies such as food and energy.

He said that while supplies of basic food items such as chicken and eggs remained adequate, rising transportation and logistics costs could have wider economic implications.

Nungsari also called for improved energy efficiency and stronger domestic production capacity, particularly in the food sector, to enhance the country's resilience against future disruptions. - NST

The ageing crisis we are not ready for

WHEN I first read the latest National Health & Morbidity Survey (NHMS) survey results, I had to stop and read them again. Only 14.7% of our seniors are ageing well. Let that sink in.

The rest? They are struggling with chronic illness, frailty, or worse. This isn’t just a health statistic. It’s a mirror reflecting who we are as a nation.

Nearly four in ten elderly Malaysians live with diabetes. Almost three-quarters have high blood pressure. More than three-quarters have high cholesterol. And here’s the kicker: 68% have at least two of these conditions at once. 30% have all three.

That’s not “getting older”. That’s suffering.

By 2030, Malaysia will officially become an ageing nation. But ask yourself: are our hospitals, clinics, housing, roads, and social safety nets ready? They are not.

Right now, we’re still reacting to crises instead of preventing them. We’ve built a system that treats sickness, not one that nurtures health.

So what needs to change? Let’s talk honestly.

First, we have to start earlier.

Chronic diseases don’t come out of nowhere. They’re the result of decades of habits—our love for sugary drinks, processed food, sedentary lifestyles. If we wait until someone is 65 to care, we’ve already lost.

We need to start at 40. Regular checkups, real health education, and actual incentives to live healthier. Not just slogans. Real, sustained change.

Second, our clinics need to become the heroes they were meant to be.

Hospitals are overflowing because we’ve neglected primary care. Imagine if every senior had a family doctor who knew their history. Imagine mobile health units reaching rural villages or home-bound grandparents. That’s not fantasy—it’s doable. And it would save so much suffering (and money).

Third, stop treating conditions in silos.

Right now, an elderly person with diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol might see three different doctors, take seven different pills, and keep their own messy records.

That’s absurd. We need one integrated, patient-centred system—digital tools and all—so that care is coordinated, not chaotic.

But let’s not forget the everyday stuff. Our food environment is broken. Sugar and salt are everywhere. Policies shouldn’t just blame individuals; they should work with the food industry to make healthier choices easier. And for lower-income families? Targeted nutritional support isn’t charity—it’s common sense.

Ageing isn’t just a medical issue, though. It’s deeply human.

Loneliness kills. Isolation accelerates decline. I’ve seen it in my own family—an active, sharp-minded parent becoming withdrawn simply because there’s no community, no reason to get up in the morning.

We need senior activity centres that actually feel welcoming. Intergenerational programmes where kids and grandparents share meals or stories. Mental health support that isn’t an afterthought. A society that pushes its elderly to the margins ends up hurting everyone.

Then there’s money. Too many seniors are living on razor-thin savings. How can they afford long-term treatment? Strengthening pensions, expanding medicine subsidies, creating real long-term care financing—these aren’t luxuries. They’re basic stability.

Even our cities need a rethink. Age-friendly public transport, safe footpaths, housing designed for mobility. These aren’t “nice to haves”. They’re the difference between a senior staying independent or becoming trapped at home.

And let’s not forget the silent heroes—the caregivers. Mostly family members, mostly unpaid, mostly exhausted. We give them little recognition and even less support. Training, financial help, respite care… these aren’t handouts. They’re how we keep families from breaking under the weight of love.

Honestly, we know what needs to be done. The problem isn’t lack of solutions. It’s lack of will. We need clear national targets, honest public reporting, and ministries that actually talk to each other. Policies that turn into real results, not just press releases.

Here’s the truth: Malaysia’s ageing “crisis” doesn’t have to be a crisis. It can be a turning point. A chance to build a country that’s more compassionate, more inclusive, more resilient. Because how we treat our elderly says everything about who we are.

The warning signs are blazing. The only question left is—will we act before it’s too late, or will we just look back with regret?

AI won’t break education—our old system will

FEW would disagree that technology will change education. To cope with this change, we must first understand it, and then reimagine the very foundation of learning.

The initial reaction to AI in education has been fear—fear for academic integrity. We see AI as a tool that can devalue a university degree. But to frame this shift as a battle against dishonesty is to miss the forest for the trees.

AI is not the disease; it is a symptom of a much deeper ailment in a system that has, for centuries, prioritised the regurgitation of information over the ability to think.

Digitalisation has already reshaped the classroom. Interactive whiteboards have replaced chalk, and online resources have supplemented textbooks.

Yet, these were largely enhancements to an existing structure. AI is different. It attacks the core premise of that structure: that knowledge resides within the individual and can be demonstrated through isolated output.

Now, a student has an instantaneous research assistant, a writing partner, and a tutor, all rolled into one. The student who uses it to bypass the work is cheating. But the student who uses it to brainstorm ideas, to clarify a complex concept, is using a powerful new tool.

The line is blurry, and policing it with plagiarism checkers is a losing battle. We are trying to patch a leak in a dam with chewing gum while the water level rises around us.

So, how do we cope? Not by clinging to the wreckage of the old world, but by building a new ship while at sea. This requires a fundamental shift in three key areas: purpose, pedagogy, and assessment.

First, we must redefine the purpose of education. In a world where AI can answer any question, the premium can no longer be on knowing the answer. The premium must be on asking the right questions.

Education must pivot from being a repository of facts to a forge for uniquely human skills: critical thinking, creativity, ethical reasoning, emotional intelligence, and collaboration. We must teach students not what to think, but how to think—and how to think alongside machines.

Second, pedagogy must evolve. The model in which a teacher disseminates information to passive recipients, is becoming obsolete. The teacher must transform into a curator of knowledge and a facilitator of exploration.

Classrooms should become workshops where students engage in project-based learning, tackle real-world problems, and learn to discern AI’s output—fact-checking it, refining it, and understanding its biases.

We need to teach digital literacy not as a computer science elective, but as a core subject, just as fundamental as reading and writing.

Third, and most radically, we must rethink assessment. The five-paragraph essay, the timed exam, the book report—these are artefacts of a pre-digital age. If AI can produce them, they are no longer valid measures of student learning.

Assessment must become process-oriented, not product-oriented. We should evaluate the student’s journey: the quality of their research questions, their iterative process of drafting and refining with AI assistance, their ability to synthesise information from multiple sources, and their final, uniquely human reflection on the work.

The portfolio, the presentation, and the debate will become far more valuable indicators of a student’s capability than a proctored exam.

What, then, will education look like in ten or twenty years? Imagine a learning ecosystem where every student has an AI-powered tutor that adapts to their pace, learning style, and interests.

This tutor handles the foundational knowledge transfer, freeing up human teachers to focus on mentorship, inspiration, and complex social-emotional learning.

The rigid boundaries between subjects will blur, giving way to interdisciplinary studies that reflect the complex nature of the real world. The campus of the future will not disappear, but its purpose will change.

It will no longer be just a place to receive instruction, but a hub for human connection, a space for debate, for community, for the serendipitous encounters that spark innovation. The physical and digital will blend into a hybrid reality, offering the best of both worlds.

The greatest threat AI poses to education is that we, the educators, parents, and policymakers, will use it as an excuse to avoid the hard work of change. If we simply try to ban our way out of this, we will fail.

We will produce graduates who are excellent at obeying outdated rules but ill-equipped for a world that demands they write new ones.

The future of education is not about fighting the machine. It is about leveraging the machine to elevate what is most beautifully, irreplaceably human in us all. The clock is still ticking. The question is not whether we will change, but whether we will change wisely.

Saving young hearts: New hope for children with heart disease in Malaysia

THE birth of a child is one of life’s purest joys. However, that joy can quickly turn to fear when a heart defect is discovered. Thanks to rapid advancements in paediatric cardiology, such a diagnosis in Malaysia today is no longer a sentence of despair, but a journey of hope.

“Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects about one in 100 babies,” said Dr Lim Wooi Kok, Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Cardiologist at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC).

“But with today’s imaging and interventional techniques, many children can now live well into adulthood compared to decades ago.”

Understanding childhood heart conditions

Heart problems in children generally fall into two categories: congenital and acquired

Congenital conditions are present at birth and include both acyanotic (“pink”) and cyanotic (“blue baby”) defects. Cyanotic conditions are often detected early, especially with proper newborn pulse oximetry screening, when oxygen levels fall below 95%.

Serious conditions such as Tetralogy of Fallot, Transposition of the Great Arteries, and Pulmonary Atresia require early medical attention, particularly when a baby’s lips or extremities appear bluish. Diagnosis is typically confirmed through echocardiography.

Acquired conditions develop later in life and include Kawasaki disease, rheumatic valve disease, and arrhythmias. These may present with prolonged fever, chest pain, fainting spells, or heart murmurs, and also require further imaging for confirmation.

Dr Lim, who specialises in cardiac multimodality imaging, uses echocardiography, CT, and MRI to visualise the heart in two and three dimensions, including detailed strain imaging to assess how well the heart muscle functions.

“Not all cardiologists are trained in cross-sectional imaging to interpret these complex scans but having this expertise allows us to understand a child’s heart with far greater precision,” he explained.

Newer technologies, such as photon-counting CT, now enable highly detailed 3D imaging while minimising radiation exposure—an important consideration in paediatric care. These tools help clinicians visualise even the smallest structures more clearly, allowing for safer and more accurate treatment planning.

Less invasive treatment, faster recovery

Many congenital heart defects, including atrial septal defect (ASD), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and ventricular septal defect (VSD), can now be treated through minimally invasive procedures.

Using a small catheter inserted through the groin, doctors can repair defects without the need for open-heart surgery.

“These procedures typically take a few hours, and children can often return home within a couple of days. Recovery is much faster compared to traditional surgery,” Dr Lim said.

However, long-term care remains essential. Maintaining good oral hygiene and following medical advice to prevent infections, such as endocarditis, are crucial for protecting heart health.

The emotional and practical journey for families

Caring for a child with CHD requires patience and resilience. Many children face feeding difficulties, slower growth, and repeated hospital visits.

“Every ounce of milk they drink takes effort because they are using so much energy just to breathe,” Dr Lim elaborated.

For parents, the journey extends beyond medical care. They must manage medications, attend frequent follow-ups, and balance work and financial responsibilities. The emotional toll can also be significant.

“Parents often blame themselves, wondering if it was something they did during pregnancy,” he says. “But most cases are genetic or occur by chance. The risk rises slightly to about 2–3% if a parent or sibling is affected,” he remarked.

Support from healthcare providers and peer networks plays a vital role. “We always remind families they are not alone. With proper care, most children go on to lead full, active lives,” Dr Lim added.

A lifelong commitment to care

Children with congenital heart conditions often require lifelong monitoring. Over time, the relationship between patient and doctor becomes deeply personal.

“I still see some of my patients 20 years later. They are now adults, some even married. It’s a bond that lasts a lifetime,” Dr Lim said.

He reassures parents not to panic. “With today’s technology and expertise, many heart defects can be effectively treated with early diagnosis and proper care.”

Malaysia has also made significant progress in prenatal care. Fetal echocardiography now allows doctors to detect heart defects as early as 18 to 22 weeks of pregnancy.

“This gives parents time to prepare and doctors time to plan for a safe delivery and immediate intervention if needed. It can make the difference between life and death,” he noted.

A future filled with hope

Looking ahead, Dr Lim remains optimistic. “The future of paediatric cardiology in Malaysia is bright. We are seeing more specialists trained in advanced imaging and interventions, each bringing more hope,” he said.

WANITA MCA has called for the expedited tabling and passage of the Senior Citizens Bill, warning that Malaysia can no longer afford to delay preparations for an ageing population.

Its national deputy chairperson, Tee Hooi Ling, said the country’s demographic transition is occurring at a faster pace than many developed nations, placing growing pressure on healthcare, pensions, housing, transport and family caregiving systems.

Tee stressed that the Bill is crucial in strengthening legal protection for senior citizens, particularly against neglect, abuse, abandonment and exploitation.

“Too many elderly Malaysians suffer in silence, especially those who are financially dependent or living alone. A proper legal framework is urgently needed to safeguard their dignity and rights,” she noted.

She added that the legislation would also improve access to age-friendly healthcare, social support and community services, particularly for those dealing with chronic illnesses, dementia, mobility challenges and mental health issues.

“Early intervention will not only improve quality of life but also reduce long-term healthcare costs,” she stated.

Tee further highlighted the growing burden on working adults who are balancing careers, childcare and ageing parents, calling for stronger support systems.

“Families should not be left to cope alone. We need better caregiver support, respite care and community-based services to ease this responsibility,” she stressed.

She also emphasised the importance of promoting healthy ageing earlier, urging preventive measures such as regular health screenings, nutrition awareness and active ageing programmes starting from individuals in their 50s.

“Preparation must begin early to reduce frailty, falls and preventable diseases later in life,” she said.

Tee went on to call on the government to ensure the Bill is practical and inclusive by consulting NGOs, medical professionals, welfare groups and senior citizen associations during its implementation.

Malaysian exporters left out of US tariff refund windfall

A NEWLY launched refund mechanism now allows companies to reclaim tariffs previously collected by the United States government, prompting a surge of claims from thousands of firms.

The potential payouts could be significant, particularly for small businesses that have been heavily impacted by the sweeping tariff policies introduced by President Donald Trump last year, which affected imports from nearly every country.

More than 3,000 companies, including major names such as FedEx, Costco, Skechers, Revlon, Toyota and Nintendo of America, have already taken legal action against the administration, signalling strong confidence that the tariffs may ultimately be ruled unlawful.

However, eligibility for refunds is limited strictly to those who officially paid the duties. This means Malaysian exporters, despite sometimes absorbing part of the cost, are not entitled to claim any refunds.

Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Johari Abdul Ghani explained that tariffs are imposed on the importing party in the United States, not on exporters.

As such, only US-based importers recognised by authorities can submit claims. Johari added that although the invalidation of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade provides some relief, Malaysian exporters are not entirely free from duties.

They remain subject to a 10 per cent tariff under Section 122 of the US Trade Act 1974, a temporary measure pending a revised tariff framework.

Uncertainty still surrounds how smooth the refund process will be. Many business owners remain cautious, especially given earlier indications that Trump opposed returning the funds.

Officials have suggested that it could take months before payments are disbursed, and the White House has not ruled out further legal action to delay or block refunds.

Although the US government has previously been required to return funds after losing trade disputes, the scale of this situation is unprecedented.

By March, more than 330,000 importers had paid duties under the policy, covering over 53 mil import entries.

In total, the government is estimated to have collected more than US$166 bil from these tariffs.

According to Cato Institute vice president Scott Lincicome, the outstanding sum continues to grow, accruing around US$650 mil in interest each month, equivalent to roughly US$22 mil a day. — Focus Malaysia

IT IS good to be an angler in Malaysia. The many picturesque islands surrounding the peninsular offers anyone an interesting game besides an exemplary vacation away from the monotony of daily life.

But sometimes, these remote places offer more than just huge fishes. They attract crime too since the lack of human activities translate to less witnesses.

And that was exactly what the anglers of Pulau Angsa, Jeram, reeled in recently.

In a video post on X by netizen @mynewshub, a canvass-wrapped bundle could be seen floating in the water at the edge of the rocks.

But from the hand protruding from the bundle, the nature of the object becomes clear. Netizen @mynewshub further claimed that the body had even been cemented.

The New Straits Times also carried the story, stating that the anglers were led to the body after detecting a foul smell.

According to Kuala Selangor police chief Superintendent Azaharudin Tajudin, a police forensics unit unwrapped the canvas and found the decomposing body of an as yet unidentified man inside.

“The body was taken to the Puncak Alam UiTM Hospital for post-mortem examination, which was carried out at 9am today,” he said.

BANGKOK, April 21 — Thailand is grappling with a prolonged spell of extreme heat, with temperatures in some areas forecast to reach as high as 42-43°Celsius, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly heatstroke.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Persvivatana said the hot weather, which began in late February, is expected to persist until mid-May, with April seeing a steady rise in temperatures nationwide.

She warned that the heat index in certain areas could reach as high as 60°Celsius, posing a serious threat to public health.

“Individuals with underlying health conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, should take extra precautions during the hot weather,” she said in a statement on Tuesday.

Lalida advised the public to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, stay adequately hydrated and closely monitor their health.“Those experiencing symptoms such as high body temperature, flushed skin, absence of sweating, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, palpitations, confusion, fatigue or loss of consciousness should seek immediate medical attention or call the emergency hotline 1669,” she added.

Data from the Department of Disease Control’s Digital Disease Surveillance (DDS) system showed that 182 cases of heat-related illnesses were recorded in 2025, with 59.3 per cent involving males.

The highest number of cases was reported among individuals aged 15 to 34, accounting for 78 cases, followed by 29 cases among those aged 60 and above.

About 53.3 per cent of those affected were outdoor workers, with common conditions including heat exhaustion, heat syncope, heat cramps and heatstroke. — Bernama

The impact of the global supply crisis is beginning to filter into transportation, logistics, goods prices and daily expenses, with the country now entering an increasingly evident phase of cost adjustment, said Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Nasir.

He said monitoring of selected food prices for the period April 13 to 19 shows mixed price movements.

He said the situation indicates that supply pressures are not occurring uniformly, but vary by category and are influenced by factors such as weather, agricultural input costs, transportation costs and short-term supply fluctuations.

“The average price of standard chicken increased by 2.8 percent from RM9.09 per kilogramme to RM9.33 per kilogramme, while the price of beef declined by 5.0 percent to RM35.65 per kilogramme, and Grade C eggs remained stable at an average of RM3.66 per 10 eggs.

“For fish and vegetable categories, the price of mackerel decreased to RM16.43 per kilogramme from RM17.08, while the average price of mustard greens rose from RM5.89 to RM6.21 per kilogramme, and the price of green spinach remained stable at RM5.26 per kilogramme,” he said in a special briefing on the global supply crisis broadcast live on local television today.

He said the Statistics Department (DOSM) also recorded an increase in the average diesel price in Peninsular Malaysia to RM4.09 per litre compared with RM2.98 in February, while RON97 rose to RM4.01 from RM3.11.

In this regard, he said the government’s response must be honest, swift and precise, based on current data, in addressing the impact of the crisis on the people’s livelihoods.

On the labour market, Akmal said the current trend of job losses has yet to show large-scale pressure, but still requires close monitoring.

“Past experience shows that the impact of energy cost shocks on employment usually emerges with a time lag.

“Based on data on benefit applications under the Employment Insurance System by the Social Security Organisation (Socso), a total of 4,708 workers were reported to have lost their jobs in the first 16 days of April 2026,” he said.

Akmal said the second quarter of 2026 will be a crucial period to assess whether cost pressures faced by companies begin to translate into operational downsizing or job cuts.

A total of 1,426 workers, including 304 Malaysians, have lost their jobs following the closure of a glove manufacturing factory in Sepang, Selangor, on April 15, the human resources ministry said.

The ministry said all claims related to wages and termination benefits connected with the closure of WRP Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd would be handled through the proper processes.

In a statement, it said salary payments for March had been settled, while the wages for April were still being processed.

The ministry said some of the affected Malaysian workers would be offered temporary contracts to handle critical tasks such as document management, financial matters, and machinery maintenance.

The Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) is also helping the retrenched workers get new jobs through engagements with potential employers.

“WRP has given its assurance that the welfare of foreign workers, including the provision of accommodation and food, will continue to be maintained until their relocation is completed.

“At the same time, efforts are ongoing to facilitate job offers from new employers for the foreign workers,” the ministry said.

The glovemaker cited cost increases and supply chain disruptions caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict for its closure.

EPF was among 20 cornerstone investors in Sunway Healthcare’s initial public offering, which raised nearly RM3 billion.

In a statement on its website, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage said the reading involved the Flat Sri Johor Retention Pond Outlet Channel Station (F2), despite no rainfall being recorded in the area.

The water level at the station stood at 33.03m, or 0.37m above the danger threshold, with an upward trend recorded at 2.30pm.

The station’s thresholds are set at 27.5m (normal), 31.66m (alert), 32.16m (warning) and 32.66m (danger).

Elsewhere, water levels at two stations — Sungai Bidor near Changkat Jong in Hilir Perak and Sungai Perlis at Bukit Tok Poh (F2) in Kangar, Perlis — were recorded above warning levels.

At Sungai Perlis, the water level reached 2.06m, or 0.06m above the warning threshold, with an upward trend observed at about 2.30pm.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 — The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry will dispatch geologists to Cameron Highlands following flash floods that sent muddy torrents onto a main road, as authorities move to pinpoint the cause and prevent a repeat, the New Straits Times reported.

Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said the ministry would work with multiple agencies — including the Public Works Department (JKR), the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) and local councils — in a coordinated investigation.

“We are aware of the incident, which occurred last night. This effort requires cooperation between multiple ministries and agencies.

“For our part, we will send geologists to conduct studies and provide technical assistance. Heavy rain lasting more than two hours yesterday triggered the flash floods in the Habu Heights area, with runoff from surrounding hills surging onto the Ringlet main road.

Cameron Highlands police chief Azri Ramli said the downpour began at about 2pm in the hilly terrain, sending muddy water cascading downhill and across the roadway.

“The runoff from hilly areas surged onto the main road, causing flash floods. However, the situation remained under control, and the waters fully receded by around 4pm,” he said.

The incident briefly disrupted traffic along the route as water and debris flowed across the road.

No casualties were reported, though two police reports were lodged involving vehicles caught in strong currents.

“The involved vehicles were only pushed forward by the force of the water, and no injuries were reported,” he added.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 — A father of two was sentenced to one month in jail and fined RM300 by the Magistrates’ Court today after pleading guilty to stealing various daily necessities, including two tins of sardines.

According to Utusan Malaysia, Magistrate Faezahnoor Hassan handed down the sentence after Mohd Rashid Mohd Noh, 44, admitted to the charge when it was read to him.

The e-hailing driver faces an additional seven days’ jail if he fails to pay the fine.

According to the charge, Mohd Rashid stole 20 items — including two tins of sardines, all-purpose flour, dishwashing liquid, bath soap and an air freshener — worth RM404.22 from an Aeon supermarket in Taman Maluri, Cheras, at 8.10pm on April 18.

The offence was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of up to 10 years and a possible fine.

For repeat offences, offenders may face imprisonment as well as a fine or whipping.

During proceedings, deputy public prosecutor Nor Farhana Mohd Poad urged the court to impose a sentence that would serve as a lesson to the accused.

However, defence counsel M. Soosai Raj from the National Legal Aid Foundation sought a lighter sentence, saying his client has two schoolgoing children to support.

Taking to X, Muda president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said she had viewed the full video by Luqman Long and wondered which part contained the alleged fake content.

The Home Ministry has banned another publication on a communist leader, this time involving a book on Mao Zedong published under the Selangor state government's funding.

According to a Federal Government Gazette, the book titled “Mao Zedong: China dalam Dunia Abad ke-20” was banned under Section 7(1) of the Printing Presses and Publication Act, which gives the home minister the "absolute discretion" to prohibit any "undesirable publications".

The ban took effect from the date of the gazette on Feb 13.

The original book titled “Mao Zedong and China in the Twentieth-Century World” was written by New York University history professor Rebecca E Karl.

It centred on the historical account of the former Chinese Communist Party leader's life and thoughts, according to a description by Duke University Press.

The translated version was published in 2020 by IBDE Ilham Sdn Bhd, a private company that received grants from the Selangor state government.

When contacted, its chief executive director Farhan Nor Affandi said the book was among the publications that it had translated under the state government's “Siri Pencerahan Selangor” initiative.

He said the company took note of the government's decision but stressed that the book was purely an academic and analytical work about history.

"It was in no way intended to promote or spread the communist ideology, but instead explained Mao’s role in the context of 20th-century history.

"This approach is a normal practice in the international history discipline," Farhan said.

Ideologies and historical events

The publisher added that a society's maturity depends on its ability to understand the various ideologies and historical events.

"Understanding does not mean supporting (an ideology). On the contrary, it helps the society to make informed decisions," Farhan said.

Malaysiakini has reached out to the Selangor state government for comment.

Last week, book publisher Gerakbudaya was served with a notice from the ministry banning two of its publications that narrate stories about the struggle of the Malayan Communist Party (CPM).
