Poll Results and Playing with Wordpress

At this very moment the consensus is towards Comicpress style reading in the polling. I've been playing around with Comicpress and Webcomic. Webcomic is used on Tinkers of the Wasteland, if you want a example. For me, it's easier to use vs. Comicpress.

The only thing I REALLY want is the Gravatars used in Comicpress. Basically, if you have a Gravatar, you can use it to comment on any webcomic that supports gravatars. It'd be nice to put faces to the folks who read MALDEN instead of wondering what everyone looks like.

I also picked up Manga Studio EX 4 over the weekend, and I can say I'm blown away at how intuitively built it is for comicking. Highly recommended and I'll be switching over to it once the current arc is done (page 42, I hope).

Poll: Regarding online reading format.

Hi Maldenites (Maldeneers?)! As you can see, I've been tinkering with the site design. Since blogger doesn't have a Comicpress style template, I usually use Issuu/scribd applets so folks can read Malden without moving around the site too much.

Good for the reader, bad for my page hits. This isn't all that bad, but I notice no body ever leaves a comment. Comments are probably the biggest thing that let me know that you, the reader, enjoy MALDEN (or hate it, whatever works). So I've put up a poll. Its on the left sidebar.

I want to know how you, the reader, would prefer to read MALDEN. Do you like reading in the Applets? Like clicking on the thumbnails to get the HD sizes? Or would you prefer a Comicpress reading experience?

Just so everyone knows, Casey is not nearly this crazy in real life. I think. I'll have to check. But remember, bad milk doesn't make you go crazy. It'll give you food poisoning.

Had a great time at Stumptown Comic Fest. Exchanged a bunch of business cards to folks at the con, got a quick critique from Steve Lieber of WHITEOUT and Underground fame and Scott Kurtz of PVP. Was happy to see they liked looking at MALDEN, so that made my day.

Finished off Sunday with 2 panels. Selling your own damn Comics with Joe Keatinge (writer of Brutal/editor of PopGun) and Sneaking Into Comics with Joe Keatinge, Joshua Williamson (Writer at Marvel Comics), Nate Simpson (Creator of Nonplayer and signed my copy with a River Dancing Veritech), John Schork (submissions Editor for Dark Horse Comics) Lukas Ketner (artist for the upcoming Witch Doctor from Image) and Brandon Seifert (writer on Witch Doctor). Very informative panels and a bit of a reality check in what to goes into being successful in comics.

Peter makes a full color (and messy) appearance. Thinking about Casey's car in the comic, it looks a bit like a 1962 AC Cobra. Mostly coincidental, since I haven't heard of the AC Cobra until I started reading Gunsmith Cats.

So looks like I got this in on time. Considering that Emerald City Comicon took up most of my weekend, that's not a bad thing. I got to meet a lot of favorite artist/writers and fellow webcomickers. The highlights were meeting Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson (of Wonder Woman/Spider-man/X-men fame). Probably the nicest and most talented couple in comics.

Doug Tennapel, of Earthworm Jim/Creature Tech/RatFist. Ryan Ottley is a great guy. Actually, everybody I met was courteous to a tee. I think I'll get a table, and see how its like on the otherside of the fence.

This week, I want to recommend REMIND by Jason Brubaker. A pretty big shining beacon of quality art/storytelling, with a dash of advice for all of you aspiring comickers/graphic novelists.

Emerald City Comicon is this week, so next weeks strip may be delayed a bit (i.e. it'll be a Tuesday/Wednesday update). I'm looking forward to just hanging out, getting some books signed and soaking up the general chaos/energy.

FAKE! CHIP!

Here are some webcomics I can whole heartedly recommend.

Search For New Lifeforms is a great comic by John Kantz (a drinking buddy and fellow Seattle comicker). Hilarious and drawn WAY better than any of my strips (I'm not kidding), if you haven't checked it out, you're missing out on some good stuff.

Stix & Bones by Darrel Toland (another drinking buddy/fellow Seattle-based comicker) is what happens when Peanuts and Pogo met up with Genetic Experiments. Good stuff, with a pretty diverse cast.

On my facebook, I had the pleasure of hearing that Nate Simpson has found a publisher for his comic NONPLAYER (aka Project Waldo). It should be coming out in April 2011from Image Comics, so keep an eye out people, because you are going to be BLOWN away. Yeh, bolded AND italicized. You can't mess with that.

I also like this news because:

A) Mr. Simpson has shared drinks with me over Karaoke and does a mean David Bowie. Hearing this news makes me happy.

B) It gives me a little hope that maybe, MAYBE, I can do the same with MALDEN at some point. The plan has always been to collect MALDEN in a collected edition at some point in the future, whether it be single issue like PVP and Liberty Meadows (I think that link maybe NSFW so be careful), or a large collected volume similar to Calvin & Hobbes.

We're getting close to the end of the current arc. I figure once the arc is done, I'll do some work on a cover mock up and send a submission to Image.

Hearts on fire fingers cross no retreat no surrender, yo. You can't succeed without risking failure.
