Emotional competences in children with history of maltreatment

The contribution is a review of the psychological literature about emotional competence in prescholar and scholar maltreated children with a particular focus on emotional understanding and emotional regulation. After a brief presentation of the adaptive functions of emotional competence, are presented and discussed the main results of studies conducted in familiar maltreating contexts, showing an overall framework still not consistent and conclusive. Particular emphasis is also given to the possible variables that may influence the relationship between maltreatment and emotional competence and to the interpretative hypothesis of the results obtained proposed within the different theoretical approaches.

Emotion knowledge in young neglected children

Young neglected children may be at risk for emotion knowledge deficits. Children with histories of neglect or with no maltreatment were initially seen at age 4 and again 1 year later to assess their emotion knowledge. Higher IQ was associated with better emotion knowledge, but neglected children had consistently poorer emotion knowledge over time compared to non-neglected children after controlling for IQ. Because both neglected status and IQ may contribute to deficits in emotional knowledge, both should be assessed when evaluating these children to appropriately design and pace emotion knowledge interventions.

"What are emotions?" Emotional understanding in maltreated and nonmaltreated children

The study investigated the maltreated children’s emotional understanding. Two groups of participants were compared: the experimental group (51 maltreated children; M age = 112 months; SD = 13,87) and a control group (51 non maltreated children; M age = 111 months; SD = 13,45). Different tasks were administered: the TEC (Test of Emotion Comprehension; Pons & Harris, 2000), the Telling of a story (Cigala, 2007), and a self-report task of emotional regulation. The findings show significant differences between two groups in the scores of the TEC, in the emotional regulation and in some categories of emotional language, in favor of non maltreated children. These results contributed to clarify the data in the growing literature on the emotional understanding in maltreated children.

Potential physical abuse in preschool children fathers and mothers

This study compared some psychological characteristics (personal distress, parenting stress, parenting alliance and perception of child adjustment) of preschool children father and mothers at low/high risk of child physical maltreatment (measured by Abuse Scale of Child Abuse Potential Inventory Form VI - CAPI). Participants were 59 parents at high risk of physical maltreatment (score ≥ 166; experimental group) and 59 at low risk (score < 166; control group), matched to age, status, education level, children age and gender. Results show that two groups are very different in all examined variables: parents at high risk of physical maltreatment have higher levels of personal distress and parenting stress, lower levels of parenting alliance and evaluate child behaviors as more problematic that parents at low risk of physical maltreatment.

The Narrative Exposure Therapy: an intervention on children earthquake victims in Abruzzo.

Following the devastating earthquake that struck Abruzzo on the 6th April of 2009, the Catholic University of Sacred Heart of Milan, Faculty of Psychology has proposed a support to child victims of natural disaster. The project, started in the refugee camp of Paganica 5, was inspired by the theoretical basis and methodology that defines the NET (Narrative Exposure Therapy) a standardized approach for short-term treatment of PTSD. The use of KIDNET (version for children) in the form of a game in various meetings called "life line", has been proven to be a methodology particularly suitable and effective in the context of post-earthquake emergency to reduce in a short time the psycho-physiological activation of children, to make a cognitive restructuring experience within the self-concept and to normalize the emotional responses associated to traumatic event.

The search for evidence in sexual abuse and the role of psychology: some critical nodes in the second revision of the "Noto Chart".

In June, 2011 a further revised edition of the "Noto Chart", i.e. "Guidelines for the exam of the child for sexual abuse", originally devised in 1996 and already revised in 2002, was drawn up, to match the development of norms and the increased scientific knowledge about this issue. The article presents some considerations about the investigation steps, the child’s witness and the good practices to enhance the reliability of interview. The need of skilled and really experienced "experts", and the appropriate training to achieve these expertise, are underlined.
