Benign as that may sound, it was something serious for me. It started with the purchase of a single book to read on a plane ride to Puerto Rico, and turned into a full blown obsession. I could complete one in a day and then stay up 'til the wee hours of the morning starting a new one. Knowing this, I started buying books two and three at a time so that I would always have a new book to start when I finished one. I scouted out all of the used book stores in town, joined a couple of book subscription clubs, made almost daily visits to my local Wal-Mart, not to mention buying in bulk from Amazon, Books-A-Million, and Barnes & Noble. So when I say I was addicted, I'm not being overly dramatic. I was finally able to stop myself from buying new books after I filled two bookcases and replaced the clothes on the shelf of my walk-in closet with paperback novels. Wall to wall, y'all. But I digress...

I actually stopped reading for awhile in an effort to break the habit. But when I found myself pregnant, unemployed, and home alone for the majority of the day, I needed something other than my beloved cable television to fill my days. So armed with a library card I trekked out to the local library and was determined to find worthy reading material: something light and funny, realistic and relate-able, witty and intelligent, a source of escape that didn't leave me feeling dirty (or hot and heavy) in the midst of it. And thus I discovered "chick lit" and my world has never been the same.

It is in that vein of literature that Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus chose to contribute their collective prowess and both readers and movie goers (perhaps you're aware of certain a major motion picture starring Scarlett Johannson, Laura Linney, Alicia Keys, and Paul Giamatti?) are grateful. Together they have written "The Nanny Diaries," "Citizen Girl," "Dedication," and now they continue to tell Nan's story in "Nanny Returns."

Nan has returned to NYC with her husband, H.H (Harvard Hottie), after living abroad for 12 years. She's embarking on a different kind of journey now, starting her own consulting business and fixing up her new abode. Unexpectedly (and annoyingly to Nan), H.H's biological clock begins to tick and her time spent with the X family may have permanently stopped her own. In the midst of this maelstrom of life decisions, lo and behold, Grayer X (her former charge, now 16) shows up drunk and on her doorstep. Turns out Mr. and Mrs. X continued to procreate (he's got a brother named Stilton, age 7) and now they are in the midst of a very ugly, Upper East Side style divorce. Out of a guilty sense of responsibility, Nan once again steps into the world of the X family, in an effort to help the boy that she left behind (and his young brother) and finds her "mommy gene" along the way.

Emma and Nicola were kind enough to not only send me an advance copy of the book (which is now available in book stores) but also answered a few of my questions:

What compelled you to revisit Nanny's story?

For years we had been just as curious as readers about what happened to Nan and all the characters in the first book. We pictured a happy hazy sunset for Nan, but didn’t let ourselves think about Grayer too much because we weren’t optimistic about his chances. Then last Spring we had a series of A-ha moments back-to-back and before we knew it a story had unspooled before us. We were inspired by articles we read about private schools being taken over by parents who wanted to buy their children a world without consequences. Then we read about the Astor trial and something about a son turning his father in for embezzling from his mother really struck us. Of course the Madoff story was rife with gripping family dynamics, from the sons turning in their father to the father/son accounting firm that had enabled the fraud in the first place. It all got our minds churning about pulling back to look at the larger impact of this community.

What was the experience like, having "The Nanny Diaries" made into a movie and how involved were you in the process (were you ultimately pleased with the results)?

We really enjoyed the movie and it remains a completely surreal experience for which we are thoroughly grateful. While we did visit the set as guests, we had no creative involvement in the movie. It is definitely a different journey than the novel in that it was a social satire while the movie is a romantic comedy--and with a romantic comedy, you have to have a happy ending. Nanny Returns picks up where the novel left off and we ultimately bring the readers, we hope, a satisfying and realistic sense of closure.

As former nannies, what advice would you give to fashionista mommies out there?

While nanny-ing is hard work, it is by no means as hard as being a mom, so we don’t have advice on that front quite yet. Our advice to fashonista nannies is to look for the cute comfortable with an eye toward synthetic fabrics that can be easily cleaned of juice box spray. We’re fans of Pumas, yoga pants with a high lycra count, Old Navy layers on top, and the trusty black ponytail holder.

Do you think the Nanny line of stories is complete, or is this something you will continue to develop?

We’ve learned to never say never! Our first YA novel, The Real Real, about the world of teen reality TV just hit stores in paperback today and we are hard at work on our next YA novel, Over You, in which we delve into the heart of heartbreak and what’s required to get over it. Our novel, Dedication, about a woman who’s high school boyfriend disappears before prom and then resurfaces a few years later as the biggest pop star of her generation--and every song he’s world-famous for is about her—will be out in paperback in March. You can read an excerpt of Nanny Returns right now on our website at www.emmaandnicola.com , friend us at Facebook at “Emma and Nicola Authors of the Nanny Diaries” to enter contests to win a signed first edition, and follow us daily on Twitter @NannyDiaries.

What advice do you have for aspiring novelists?

Nicki wrote Harvey Fierstein a fan letter as a teenager and he wrote back to her: “Keep your heart and ears open always—the rest is easy.” We live by it. Also, be disciplined, set up a regular timeslot- even if it’s just one hour a week, and hold to it as sacred writing time. You’d be amazed how bit by bit that story will get written!

What chic/fashionable purchase(s) did you make once you "made it big" as authors?

Honestly, we both went out and got dogs, which are true luxuries in NYC because most apartment buildings won’t let you have them and you need to be around to walk them as we don’t have back yards. And while we were on tour in London for Nanny Harvey Nichols was having an insane sale. We ran into each other in a crowded aisle with Prada purses on each arm and Gucci shoe boxes piled to our chins- every item was under $100. It was our one crazy day of X-like indulgence :)

I was really excited when I found out that there was to be a sequel to "The Nanny Diaries!" I devoured it (I actually checked it out on that aforementioned visit to the library) in about a day and a half and subsequently read (and thoroughly enjoyed) "Citizen Girl." Emma and Nicola kindly sent me "Dedication" as well and I am now reading it (I'm actually kind of getting on the hubby's nerves with my late night reading stints). "Nanny Returns" is definitely a must read for any fashionista who has left a job with a heavy heart and a niggling "I wonder" on her conscious, or has been a baby sitter (or nanny) in a past life, or if you're just like me, a connoisseur of fine "chick lit." 'Til next time...

Books do so much for a person, they educate, broaden horizons, and allow the imagination the opportunity to soar and explore places a body may not ever experience. My favorite things to give my girls are books, I love discussing them with my friends (it's a wonder I haven't started or joined a book club), and I could spend hours upon hours in my local library, Barnes & Noble, or on Amazon.

You can not imagine my excitement at being given the opportunity to review 3 new books! They are all very different, but very much in the same vein due to their overwhelming relevance in any given "fashionista's" life. Here is the first:

THE WELL-DRESSED HOME

(Annette Tatum)

The concept of this innovative interior design book is to draw from your own individual fashion and style sense to inspire and create a personalized living space that uniquely reflects you. Annette explains how to determine your personal style aesthetics (it's amazing how much a close examination of your closet can tell about you) and how to use that visual inspiration as basis for decorating. A style guide is utilized to identify your personal style sense using the following categories: Romantic, Couture, Classic, Casual, Bohemian, Retro, Resort, Modern, Eclectic, Vintage, and Eco. What I really like about the style guide is that the book goes on to create several mash ups of those eleven basic style aesthetics, and demonstrates how to collaborate seemingly different tastes successfully (which comes in handy if you share your living space).

Not only is the book exceedingly helpful and informative, it is visually gorgeous. From it's beautiful cover to the exquisite photography inside (taken by Karyn R. Millet), you can't help but be inspired to improve your surroundings when looking at this book. It would even be beautiful on display for your guests as a coffee table book! The Well-Dressed Home is perfect if you are looking to revamp your homestead for the holidays or new year, or if you are like me and preparing to move to a new abode. I am now so excited to have the blank canvas of a new home to execute some of the ideas I've gotten from this stunning book! It also makes the perfect gift for any fashionista in your life, whether she's in a studio apartment or manse, new to her home or been there for ages, young or old (in fact, my mother try to sneak away with my copy after I showed it to her!). One of my favorite things to do was to go in and choose a surprise grab bag-they had them in assorted sizes and price ranges and it was always so much fun to go home and find out what goodies I had scored. It was as much mystery and suspense a little 7-12 year old girl could handle (hey, they were innocent times back then). It was the fond memories of that feeling of giddy anticipation and slight triumph that inspired my latest give away, but apparently y'all aren't quite there with me yet.

So here are some deets on what's up for grabs: a 3.4 fl. oz bottle of Hanae Mori Butterfly Eau de Toilette Spray (with notes of: strawberries, bilberries, black currant, bulgarian rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, almond, and praline) worth $90. Yep 90 bucks. Plus some other stuff. Good stuff (I've got good taste ladies)... I would tell you about it, but I think maybe I should let you earn it...

So click here to go to the original post for details on how to enter. And I've extended the deadline so that we (I) can have more fun with this. Perhaps I'll leak more details on the prize day by day; I'm sure I'll be more inclined to do this if see more people participate. Maybe if you leave me a message on Twitter (@mamafashionist1) or on the Facebook fan Page (see the right side bar for deets) I'll give exclusive info on the prize... 'Til next time...
I've been on the grind for the last week and a half or so, so I should be happy for the break, but honestly all I can think about is the money I'm missing out on by not going to work tonight. But then I thought, I'm just sitting here in bed so take advantage of the opportunity to catch up on my fun "work!" I have lots of tweeting and blog reading to catch up on and I finally have a chance to talk to you lovelies! This however will be a bit "wham bam thank you ma'am" cos I'm totes feeling the effects of the much needed cold medicine I just guzzled down. In an effort to preserve and maintain the level of eloquence and general coherency I've upheld so far, I think I'm going to take a little nap before I try to wax poetic for you. 'Til next time...
I miss you all so much. I haven't so much as opened my cute little pink netbook all week (I haven't even been able to keep up with my email on my beloved BB Storm either)! That means there has been no Facebook, or Twitter, or blogging. My in-laws are staying with us for the week (well, they got here last Friday and are staying until Sunday night/Monday morning) and it's been all out madness as far as my schedule is concerned. But I've been thinking of you all and contemplating how to make my absence up to you and I do believe I have come up with something...

Yes lovelies, it is give away time again! This time is it's a random (yet awesome) selection of goodies from yours truly (well technically, they were generously donated to me by the lovely Niki Paolucci, the manager of Cosmetics and Fragrance at Nordstrom Mall of Georgia). Basically, I am offering a grab bag of fragrance and cosmetic goodies to one of my lovely readers simply for telling me about your favorite foundation. I have been using Bare Minerals and am almost all out of it. I love it but am always on the quest for something new and different and better and so i would love some suggestions as to what to try next. I was thinking about trying Bare Minerals' new matte formula (as I have oily skin and get a bit paranoid at times about looking shiny/greasy) but then I saw an ad in the People Style Watch (with Hillary Duff on the cover) for a mineral make up by Clinique that is "smart" and was very intrigued.

So here's the nitty gritty: you need to be a follower of Mama Fashionista on Google Reader and be US resident to qualify for the give away (sorry international lovelies). You will get bonus entries for the following: following me on Twitter and tweeting about the contest ("I entered to win a goodie bag from @mamafashionist1 and you should too! http://bit.ly/8Ba6Jh for details"). Just leave an additional comment with your Twitter username for verification. You can also become a fan of Mama Fashionista on Facebook for an extra entry. Leave a comment here indicating that you have become a fan and those of you that are already fans can just leave a comment on the Facebook fan page about the contest.

I can't wait to hear what you guys use. While I love make up, I have focused mainly on eye and lip make up. Face make up intimidates me to no end. That being said, I'd love to hear both department store and drug store recommendations, anything to help me make an educated purchase and soon. The contest will be open until Friday December 4 at 12 am EST and the winner will be notified by Monday December 7. 'Til next time...

But here it goes, here I am. I DEFINITELY need to work on my photography skills (or talk someone else into taking them for me). The first one is from my excursion to Shecky's Girls Night Out with my mom (there is one of her as well, because she is gorgeous and is very much one of my style icons), then there are some very embarrassing shots I took of myself (in my bathroom) because I really like my make up today and figured I show it off to you lovelies! So here goes:

Ok.... time for some necessary self-deprecation: I know the ones from Shecky's are fuzzy (mine cos my mom took it and doesn't know how to operate my camera; and I'm wearing my fave necklace from Twisted Silver, I'll try to find a closer shot, I literally had to keep my mom from taking it from off of my neck so that she could have it!) and the one of her is way far away (cos she would not let me do a close up, but she looked so fabulous I was totally jealous and proud all at the same time). The last three I took of myself and that's just awkward y'all! I need to practice posing and figure out where to get the best lighting and lose like 20 more pounds! Anyway, I know I look totally goofy, but I just really loved my eye make up today and I got so many compliments on it at work so I figured, might as well start here and now with the posting of self portraiture. Hopefully the more I do this, the better I'll get, and the more comfortable I'll be with the whole sitch. I guess we shall see. 'Till next time...

Fashion Forever...
I want to apologize for being remiss by my lack of posting the past couple of days. There has been a bit of upheaval and change in the Fashionista household. My husband and I are business owners and he has a job outside of the home as well. My primary job was (and continues to be) to take care of home. But we all know and feel the effects of the economy we now exist in and so though my plate is truly piled high to begin with, when the opportunity to make some extra money to add to my family's coffer and provide some fun money for the girls and I, I had to jump on it.

So having a job outside of the house is good and bad for my blogging. It is bad because I am EXHAUSTED. All the time. Women (particularly wives and mothers) know that while we don't receive a paycheck for it, what we do at home is most definitely "work." So I leave work to go to work, and when I get off of work I go back to work. But hey, it's living and I love every bit of it. I just need to work on my scheduling so that I can devote the proper amount of time to you lovelies. But the new J O B is good for the blog on several levels: more money for fun things to blog about, more exposure to people IRL for inspiration, and most importantly, I have a reason to leave the house on an almost daily basis and thus I have a new venue to express myself creatively which will inevitably trickle into the blog.

See, I've mentioned before my slight trepidation over posting pictures of myself and when I was ruminating as to why I was so anxious about the pics (I may be a little thicker than I'd like, but I'm cute) I realized that part of the problem is that days could go by without my having to leave the house. That meant no need for me to dress up or put on make up (except for for my husband; I have a daily alarm set so that I can get cute for him before he gets home from work) except for maybe once or twice during the week and on the weekends. But now I'm free! I actually get to interact face to face with adults other than people who I share a last name or blood with! The downside is, I am required to wear a uniform of sorts, but never fear! One of my absolute favorite forms of visual creative expression is make up. So now I have cause to get made up and do something bold and different almost everyday so as to set myself apart in a sea of similarity. So I'm thinking I may start to take pics of my make up and detail what I used and how I did it. And now because I am forced to wear a uniform for work, I am very attentive to what I wear when I'm not at work, and I have money to get cute new things (just fyi, it's not as if my family was destitute; I just felt selfish using money that could be used for the family as a whole or for my girls to buy things for myself, but now that I'm earning my own funds I feel a little more comfortable splurging on myself occasionally)! So perhaps to start with, I'll do a style post at least once a week. We shall see!

Anyway, I want to apologize for being gone for so long. Thank you to those of you that participated in the Bebe Bling give away (I'll announce and notify the winner tomorrow). I do plan to post regularly from now on. For now, I am going to retire to bed, as I plan to wake up at the butt crack of dawn to enjoy the epitome of fashion, nature. The Leonid Meteor Shower will be visible tonight in North America and Asia from about 1:00 am EST 'til dawn. I have a whole idea about waxing poetic on the fashion/nature thing so stay tuned for that. 'Til next time...

Phew! It's Saturday, and as such, the rest of the world (or at least that's how it seems to me) is out having a lovely, leisurely day. But not I! Besides a little shopping for the girls, today has been (and will continue to be, because my day is so no even close to being over) all about business. So I put together this Polyvore set of my ideal business chic ensemble so that I could share something with you lovelies today. It's pretty much non stop, nose to the grindstone day in the Fashionista household, so no eloquently articulated witty ramblings on the stylish things in life from me today. Nope, just this vision of Louis Vuitton accented loveliness. I must be off... 'Til next time...
PS is actually part of the reason that I started this blog; she has expressed the desire to be a fashion designer when she grows up and as I encouraged her to do research to find out what it takes to be successful in that field, I found myself inspired and blogging seemed to be the perfect outlet for me.

PS has such a unique since of style and is very creative in a DIY kind of way. She makes her own bracelets, rings, and necklaces and has even embarked on having her own little business by making jewelry for her friends at school. She actually has two jewelry boxes on her dresser because in addition to her own creations, she has amassed quite a collection of pretty dangling things (both costume and fine pieces). She has a better jewelry wardrobe than most girls her age (definitely better than the one that I had at her age) and at the rate LS is going she is going to have quite the collection too!

We got LS' ears pierced at 5 months and she has worn earrings everyday, ever since. When she was about 7 months old, I got her her first charm bracelet and even at that young age she was very well aware of the shiny pretty thing on her arm. She would fuss and cry whenever you took it off (unless it was bath time, and then she understood). When she inevitably lost that bracelet at around 12 months, she literally claimed one of my bracelets, a pretty sterling silver chain made with open linking hearts, and I adjusted it to fit her tiny wrist. She is never with out this bracelet. She will bring it to you to put it back on if it falls off. It's almost as if it is an extension of herself (bizarre and dramatic, I know, but she's really not playing around when it comes to her bracelet).

As she has gotten older, she plays with my jewelry now as well (I have learned the hard way to keep my good stuff out of reach). She will stack a whole arm full of bangles on both arms and put rings on both index fingers and walk around with her hands raised to the sky so that the jewelry does not fall off. She loved playing with my bangles so much, that when I stumbled upon this company, I had to reach out to them.

Bebe Bling is the brain child of Chany Klein and her sister Estee. Like me, they are both moms to two little fashionistas in the making. For a while they discussed going into business together so that they could make a satisfying living and still be at home for their little ones. Because they live in two different states, starting an online business made the most sense. Baby accessories became their choice of wares for obvious reasons; if you have a little girl, you know how much fun it is to dress them up and there is definitely a need for variety and style in the baby jewelry arena. By finding and selecting pieces that are perfect for their little girls, Bebe Bling is now able to offer fashionable, cute and inexpensive jewelry to little divas everywhere. Though their primary concentration is selling on their website at present, it is only a matter of time before you see Bebe Bling in a boutique near you!

Chany and Estee were generous enough to send me a pair of Butterfly Kisses Dangle Earrings and a Butterfly Kisses Bangle. LS refuses to take off her earrings and, true to form, causes a fuss every time we remove her bangle. She shows of her "pretty" to everyone she sees when we go out and her face literally lights up when we pull the bangle out of the cute little pink box. Sometimes I even catch her shaking her head, so that she can hear and feel the delicate shimmy of her earrings. She is enamored with her pieces and thanks to Bebe Bling you too can put that sweet smile on a little girls' face by giving her her very own Butterfly Kisses Bangle! That's right, it is giveaway time again!
And then there are times when I utterly despise Monday-it's chaos and disorder and meh-ness. Today is one of those Mondays that I hate. I feel totally and completely uninspired and downright ornery. It's actually quite confusing because yesterday was so pleasantly filled with delicious surprise and promise that I expected today to follow suit. But nope...

So anyway, I don't want to spread this gloom of a mood I'm in to all of you lovelies so I will part with some good news and a glimpse of what usually works for me when I just can't turn my frown upside down. First the good news: a winner has been selected for the butter LONDON give away! They will be receiving a very happy email tomorrow. And as I go, I will share with you my little pot of happiness:

Hello lovelies! As you can see, I've been playing make believe on Polyvore again (it seems to be just the thing to pick up my spirits when I get a little down or feel uninspired). The only thing is this time, I used an item that I actually own! That chic necklace is from Twisted Silver and I have one of my very own IRL! I've worn it practically every day since I got it in the mail. I actually wear it 3 different ways: fastened loose with the tag in the front, as a choker with the tag in the back, and if the neckline of my garment is just right (like perhaps a cute boatneck sweater) I wear the necklace slightly askew, so that the tag drapes over my shoulder on to my collar bone. I get SEVERAL compliments EVERY time I wear my Flatiron Necklace (my mother actually tried to guilt me into giving it to her, and as much as I love her, I had to shut her down) and my Athena Bracelet!

I actually built this ensemble starting with the shoes first (have I mentioned to you guys how much I LOVE shoes). This is another thing that I do IRL, when shopping for a special occasion, I always pick shoes first and then build my outfit around them. I suppose shoes kind of inspire me. I wanted to go with something semi casual (because to be honest, unless I'm in the house or going to the gym, I'm never really that casual) this time, an outfit suitable for running errands (i.e. shopping) on the weekend. Tough shoes, comfy pants, a stand out shirt, and lots of lovely accessories-the perfect outfit for a day at the mall. I also love the clever little wallet; it's so cute that I would decline carrying a handbag so that everyone could see the adorable drawing (plus that would leave more room on my arm for shopping bags).

I've been a little absent this week as far as posting goes, and I apologize for that. But I have very good reasons! I'm working hard in the background to make sure that I have plenty of stylish, witty, and entertaining material (and goodies!) for all of you. I've got big plans people; I consider this blog a vehicle and a journey, and I invite you all along for the ride! 'Til next time...
It has been a goal of mine since joining IFB and I am beyond honored to have been chosen and included in a group of extremely talented, witty, intelligent, stylish women. Enjoy! <3 <3 <3
Coming off of Ashe Mischief's Independent Fashion Blogger's Post (Good Cop/Bad Cop: Participating in Links a la Mode), you all brought your A-game in posting the links a la mode -- which made it extra hard to edit! This week, the theme that I saw emerging throughout the posts is one of celebrating our unique diversity; each site has a different take and approach to fashion, art, beauty, media, lifestyle, music - you name it! From the dry shampoo trials at Dramatis Personae to Le Petite Cecile's observations regarding the bleached eyebrow trend, you all brought a new perspective to each topic at hand, a sign that indicates how wonderful and creative the blogosphere truly is. As expected, there was a fabulous round-up of links in the forum as well, all worthy of your eyeballs!
I had just joined Twitter so this was a really good way to get me hooked (and now I'm officially addicted to Twitter!)...

LS giggles every time you turn the page in this adorable picture book that feature cute little kitties saying very silly things.

This tote bag has been used from the moment I took it out of it's package. It actually caused a little tension between the girls and I; PS and LS want to claim it as their own!

I said it. I'm a slut. A perfume slut. The idea of monogamy and fidelity seem so appealing...in theory. I try really hard to be faithful, but it's so very difficult. I've always loved perfume; I remember playing with my mother's and my nana's perfume and going from fragrance counter to fragrance counter in pursuit of little bitty samples for me to stash in my little girl purse. My favorite fragrance as a child was Lauren and I felt so sophisticated when my mom bought her regular bottle of Safari and awarded me with the miniature to scale bottle of that precious scent that came as part of the gift with purchase. Then I fell in love with Sunflower. Then it was CK ONE and CK be. Then Liz Claiborne Sport. Then Cool Water (sigh, just thinking about Cool Water takes me back to high school), Curve, Polo Sport, and Romance. Then I got pregnant with PS and my love affair with fragrance came to a screeching halt for 10 months. Even after I had her, my olfactory receptors were way too sensitive to deal with fragrance the way they used to, so it took me a while to get back in the game again. I took baby steps to acclimate myself in the world of pretty scents again, overloading on body washes, creams, and body sprays from The Body Shop, Bath and Body Works, and Victoria's Secret (it was kind of borderline obsessive; for each scent I bought, I had to have the trifecta: a cleanser, moisturizer, and spray) At one point, I had amassed so much product, I had to put a large portion of it into storage ( and then i forgot about it and started buying stuff again).

But eventually that old mistress fine fragrance beckoned me, so I once again flirted with the idea of having one signature fragrance. I started with Michael Kors, and actually thought that I could be true to it. But then I discovered Black by Kenneth Cole and I was in love again. The season changed and I went head over heels for an Escada scent (and many of Escada's predecessors since). Sephora, in all of their genius, came up with the scent sampler (for $50 you get a ton of samples and an atomizer, you try all the scents, pick your fave and then bring in a voucher for a full size bottle of your choice) and I was in heaven. That's how I came to know Stella, Ferragamo incanto, and DKNY Be Delicious. Then there was Issey Miyake, L.A.M.B, Blue, Ralph, and True Religion.

So basically, I've let go of that dream of having that one signature scent that I'm known by (I was always so intrigued with the notion of being known, identified, recognized by my scent alone), and have accepted the fact that I am a perfume ho. I must always have coterie of fragrance on hand so that I can choose one based on my mood, the weather, the season, and what I am wearing (because I can't possibly wear the same scent with black that I do with red). And my nose continues to fall in love every time I get a magazine or take a trip to the mall. Allow me to introduce you to my new loves...

And now, not only do they have these divine fragrances in gorgeous, colorful, crystalline bottles, they also come in other incarnations. Both Very Holly wood and Lola can be gotten in solid form contained in cute cocktail rings...

And, though I can't find it on line, according to the September issue of In Style, Very Hollywood also comes in the form of an adorable ink pen ( as in the ink is scented so that when you write you can smell the fragrance; isn't that the most fabulous way to script love letters and personal correspondences?).

Sigh... So many pretty scents, so little time. And as soon as I think I'm settled and satisfied with my collection, inevitably there comes a new generation of olfactory pleasers. What are your favorite fragrances? Are you a slut like me or faithfully married to your one and only signature scent? Let me know, I'd love to hear from you! 'Til next time...

Still have a LONG way to go to get back to my svelte figure of yesteryear (though truthfully, I'll never be a size zero again, my girls have gifted me with ample T&A), but I'm working my way to a smaller, healthier me, bit by bit. So the Polyvore ensemble above is a tribute to the sexy chic look that I gravitate towards when I'm truly comfortable in my skin. Notice the balance: though it is short, the boots cover a lot of leg, the arms are completely covered and there's even a chapeaux (I love hats!)! Lots of Chanel accessories (you can never go wrong there) and a lovely ring from Twisted Silver (LOVE those ladies; will blog about soon!). Notice that the bag doesn't exactly match. I often do that intentionally IRL, in such a way that some item I have on stands out (so that people may say "where did that come from, it doesn't really fit in with the rest") and thus sets me apart and makes my presence known.

Even the hubby doesn't get that little ism of mine; he wants everything coordinated and matching. He's very much into...not blending in... but not really making a splash by being different. Sometimes I have to remind him that if it were not for my being different from the norm, he may have never even noticed me. I've always been a bit of an oddball and kind of proud and very accepting of my idiosyncrasies. To be truthful, there may have been a time in my life when I was very overtly eccentric, it was actually very liberating. As I've gotten older, I've toned down a bit, but some of the old me is starting to shine through again. And I gladly welcome her back! I hope you all will too (some day :P )... I just wanted to give a proper introduction to some of the fantastic products that can be yours (yes, yours!) if you win...MY FIRST GIVEAWAY!

That's right! Thanks to the lovely Nonie Creme, Creative Director of butter LONDON, I am offering my readers a chance to win a gift pack that includes: Nail Foundation (base coat), Hardwear (top coat), Yummy Mummy (a medium beige that is simply stunning on EVERY skin colour, 3 free nail lacquer, not pictured), HRH (a proper purple, 3 free nail lacquer, not pictured), and Powder Finish Foot Creme (all together it retails for about $92!).

All of butter LONDON's polishes are "3 free," meaning that they are free of the three toxic chemicals commonly found in nail polishes: Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde, and Toluene. Oh and (after such a serious statement as that this may sound silly, but hey) they give their lacquers the cutest, cleverist British names! HRH is short for "her royal highness" (as in Queen Elizabeth), which is perfect for the royal shade of purple. And Yummy Mummy is Brit slang for "impossibly slender, beautiful, stay at home mums," and you know I love that seeing as my goal in life is to be a yummy mummy and all ( I'm close, just gotta work on the "impossibly slender" part!).

"So, how do I get my hands on such awesomeness?"-you may be anxiously wondering. Well obviously by taking visit to butter LONDON's website. Or... you can win it here!

From the time I was about 8 years old, whenever I got to pick a treat or had saved some allowance, I always got Lee Press On Nails. I always felt so grown up and pretty when I had on those long, fake fingernails (albeit, they only stayed on until the first time I washed my hands and my mother had me petrified that they would stay on permanantly and suffocate my real nails if I ever slept with them on overnight). As I grew older (and my hand steadier) I would give myself a weekly mani/pedi and literally changed my polish with outfit (or mood). Then when I got my first job at 16, I began making regular trips to the salon to have my nails done professionally. So I guess you could say that nail polish (and lip smackers) is my first make up love.

Even now, when I'm not feeling my poshest, when I paint my nails, it's the perfect little pick me up. At any given time, I have on at least 3 different shades of polish (one on my toes, and two different shades on my fingers-a trick that I picked up from Greta's Guide!) My choice combination of butter LONDON shades is London Underground with Billy No Mates for my hands and Mariner for my toes. In order to win the marvelous prize pack from butter LONDON, all you have to do is become a follower of Mama Fashionista, visit the butter LONDON website and leave a comment here telling me your fave color combination for the perfect mani/pedi. Please pick two shades and specify which one you would use on your hands and which one you would use on your feet. Nonie and I will pick our favorite, most creative color combo and send you a lovely basket of goodies! Please include your name and email address in your comments (we won't spam you but you will be added to butter LONDON's mailing list to receive updates on new releases, and promotional offers). The contest is open to readers in the US only (sorry international people!) and will run until 11:59 pm EST October 31, 2009. The winner will be notified via email by November 3, 2009.
So have fun and best wishes! Remember to be creative! It would be the understatement of the century to say that he is utterly infatuated with her and has been since birth (as well he should be). So it was not a huge surprise when I realized that today is the one year anniversary of the first time we took her to have studio pictures done; in fact we have averaged at least one session a month since that first photo shoot.

Equipped with that knowledge, as well as the fact that we have been snapping pictures of her constantly (with both of our Blackberry's and the family digital camera) since her introduction to the world, it should also not be a shock to me that at this most recent photo shoot, my 16 month old daughter actually posed. And I don't mean the normal hamming it up for the camera that she's been doing for months now (though she really went to town this time; the hubby was playing her favorite MJ jams and she had an audience to perform for), but full on hand on her cocked hip, over the shoulder looking, head tilted to the side posing. Not to mention the precocious smile and animated dancing. Suffice it to say, it was a fruitful session, so much so the hubby wants to submit her photo for the Gap Casting Call.

Now of course I think she's a winner (we definitely have the makings of a little model here; not to mention her big sister, her photo session is next week) and obviously so does the hubby (he's ready to go out and get her a manager/agent). But I'll admit, we may be just a little bit biased. So I'll ask you, what do you think? Is she Gap material? Should we consider a career in child modeling? Let me know. 'Til next time...

Fashion Forever...

Quinn

BTW-All the clothes she's wearing in the pictures (including the headband and those adorable sunnies) are from GAPkids (we think that may improve our odds). Her jewelry (bangle in the first picture and earrings throughout) are courtesy of one of my lovely sponsors Bebe Bling. You'll be hearing more about them soon. Also, stay tuned...I'm starting my first giveaway tomorrow and it's HUGE!

PS-FYI: Though we really are entering our girls in the Gap modeling contest dealie, I'm so not a stage mom it's not funny. I'm my girls' biggest cheerleader in everything they do, but something about the baby/child modeling world totally skeeves me out. So take this post with a grain of salt; it was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek. Just don't want you guys to think I'm some creepy pusher. I'm just the proud, yummy mummy of two intelligent, precocious, thoughtful, beautiful girls! Okay... enough gushing. xoxo

Experiment

Date Night by Mama Fashionista featuring Alexander McQueen accessories

Items in this set:
Juicy Couture | Izzie leather shoe boots | NET-A-PORTER.COM, 305 GBP
Velvet Box Frame Clutch: Buy Moyna Handbags Clothing, $145
Markus Lupfer Studded jersey leggings, $360
Nancy Caten Chunky silver bracelet, $245
Brass Multi-Strand Necklace, 165 GBP

So this is my first attempt at using Polyvore on the blog. I call this set "Date Night." Let me know if you guys like it and I'll keep playing around with it. Polyvore is an absolutely awesome website. It's kinda like playing ultimate fantasy dress up for fashionistas.

I envision wearing this ensemble out with the hubby to our favorite tapas bar (Eclipse Di Luna) and maybe a little dancing afterward to sweat off the fabulous mojitoes (mango is my fave) and burn some calories consumed from the yummy dishes they have to offer (their paella is TDF). Oh to dream the dream. Here's to hoping date night (without the kiddies) happens sometime in my near future (with or without this outfit!)... To that affect, I immediately ordered subscriptions to several publications: Vogue, W, Elle, Marie Claire, etc. I anxiously began to check the mail everyday (who am I kidding, most times I sent PS out to the mailbox), in anticipation of receiving these harbingers of style, my connection to the world of fashion at large.

See, up to this point, my day, my life, my world has revolved around being a wife and mother. I live and breath for my family. Every month I got no less than four parenting magazines and Women's Health (in an effort to motivate me and give me direction as far as losing the baby fat). But my subscriptions to In Style and Glamour...I let those lapse. And somewhere along the line, I let myself lapse too.

Life is about balance. Recognizing all the things that you are (to yourself and others) and endeavoring to give them equal play in your life is a challenge we all face. I struggled in that race for equilibrium for a while. But doing this has helped to restore some of my balance.

Imagine my delight when PS came back from the mailbox with the first Vogue from my subscription (prior to that, I had purchased the September issue sometime in August and the October issue in September) and then my sudden dismay at discovering that, though it was October (and my subscription had been placed in late August), I had received...the September issue. Though slightly annoyed, I calmly called customer service and explained the situation and the nice lady on the phone was very sympathetic and understanding and resolved the issue to the best of her ability. All in all, I was appeased (though still slightly annoyed) and decided to give one of the copies to my budding fashion designer. Problem solved, right?

Not so much. A few days later, I am once again overjoyed when PS returns from the mailbox with a publication I immediately recognize because of it's distinctive size, W. While I had at a point in my life been a regular reader of Vogue, this was my first experience with W and I was beyond ecstatic to familiarize myself with it's sophisticated style. So you can bet I was crestfallen when I discovered that it is not the November (or even October) issue that one would expect at this time, but the September issue...

So I hop on the phone with customer service, once again, and come to a similar resolution, once again. Then I come to a realization-both periodicals are owned by Conde Nast. And the mothership is having issues, n’est-ce pas ? Six of their major publications have been discontinued in the last two months or so (Domino, Cookie, Gourmet, Conde Nast Portfolio and two of their wedding titles) and layoffs abound. So maybe I should just be happy that I received my magazines at all; they seriously have bigger things to deal with right now.

But now I'm worried. Are these beloved bastions of style and taste and fashion and pretty in danger? Will we wake up one morning to discover (probably on Twitter if you're anything like me) that the fashion Bible that is Vogue is no longer to be printed (though if they wanted to drop the guillotine on French Vogue it could be forgiven. I mean really, black face as an artistic statement, COME ON!)? Oh fashion gods, let that black day never come!

Well darlings, mommyhood is calling me, so I must be off. Do you have any suggestions as far as additional magazines I may be interested in? What are your must read monthlies? Let me know. 'Til next time...

(And don't forget, through the month of October, you can get 15% off at Anique Michelle boutique by using the promo code "mama" at check out!)

(Oh and the covers pictured here are both October issues and obtained from Conde Nast)

Fashion Forever...

Quinn

All the Little Birdies on Jaybird Street

So my little chickadees... I've got some goodies pour vous. I'm coasting on the euphoric high of the epic Go-Girl promo (thank you to all who participated!), so just like a regular "jay" on the street, I'm working hard for my next fix... And here it is...

The lovely people at Anique Michelle on line boutique have generously agreed to give my readers a 15% discount on their website through the end of October. I thought I'd celebrate this "mayjah" (a la Ms. Posh) coupe by putting together my ideal outfit from all the goodies Anique Michelle has to offer, just to whet your shopping appetite (as if you really needed any help!). The task was actually quite difficult; there are SO MANY TDF pretties on the site, it was hard narrowing it down. But here are "Mama's Picks." Enjoy... ; P

I would start with a pair of my favorite leggings from F21, my go to ankle boots from Bakers, and add to them:
The "On Display" Dress. Up with the girls at 5am Saturday and Sunday. Got to dress us all up (my girls are pretty pretty princesses!), and see some folks I haven't seen in a long while. I am astounded by the love and kindness of some very special people in my family's life. All in all, a good time was had by all, and now I'm beyond exhausted but feel obligated to write (in a good way), so here I am.

On the fashion/style/beauty front, I made a few acquisitions this weekend (in an effort to bolster my resolve to start posting pictures) that are directly related to previous blog posts (here and here), so now I'm actually excited to take pictures to show you guys!

I also got my first tube of Kiehl's Lip Balm (in Mango, so yummy!).

It's so good you guys! So now I'm totally tempted to splurge and get the six pack special anniversary set...

It includes Original, Vanilla, Mango, Coconut, Mint, and Cranberry scents. It's $32 which breaks down to about $5.34 per tube and they're normally around $8.50, so it's a decent deal. Plus they're fabulous!

So I'm thinking... To buy or not to buy, that is the question. I'd love to get some feedback. Are there any Kiehl's users out there that can let me know if I really need 6 tubes of lip balm all at once? What's the average life span of a tube for a pretty regular user? And, since I already have a tube of the Mango, it's possible that I may work this in to a GIVEAWAY (instead of just passing the tube on to PS like I usually do)! This is all contingent on response though, so let me know: is Kiehl's the best? Or is my balm buck better spent elsewhere? Inquiring minds want to know. And who knows, maybe you'll receive a balm for your thoughts... 'Til next time...

Oh, and stay tuned... The Go-Girl promotion might be over (thank you to everyone who participated; it'd be cool if you let me know what you purchased!), but stay tuned tomorrow-Mama has something else in the works for you!

(And as usual, you can click on the pictures and it will link you to the page where you can purchase the sited products if you are so inclined. The pictures were obtained from www.kiehls.com)

Fashion Forever...

Quinn
