MFG! will embark on its first outing of 2008 with a gig at a night called Funkshun at Mickey Martin's Bar in Limerick this weekend.

It should be a good night; we are definitely up for playing some choons to the people of Ireland and having a real pint of Guinness! Yay!!!

I have always hated the term 'tittyshaker'. I assumed it held a misogynist, anti-feminist stance.

The term is used quite often by the older generation of funk collectors and this website was able to brief me in what the term actually means. Here is a website that plays you the music and has some very implicit pics- goodness I sound like a granny!

I still don't like the word.

On Saturday 15th December mama feel good! will be hosting their own tribute to the late funk musician, vocalist and James Brown sideman Bobby Byrd who died on the 12th September this year. Mama's B-Boy Jam at The Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath will feature mfg! residents Bobbalin' Hot & Sister 45 as well as special guests DJ ill boogs from Breakin' Bread in London and Mr Dibbs a solo live funky drummer. The night pays homage to Bobby Byrd whose famous track I know you got soul is a B-Boy classic and will feature break dancing from some of the best breakers in the region.

We were invited by the Jibbering lads to play in the bar the first night of Shambala. We tore it up- it was a great vibe!! We had ourselves loads of fun. It was so nice that we could play less well known tunes and people be into them!! It is always lovely to play to proper heads- rather than having to fish out the Marlena Shaw's and James Brown's to keep mainstream audiences happy.

The festival was great- although we did not really get time to enjoy it since we had to get the train back to Brum for our residency- all potential filler-in DJs were at the festival. So, surviving on only a couple of hours of sleep and a lush dinner I had time to whip up before our 6 hour joint, we played at the Bull's Head. It was proper busy in Brum too, which we didn't expect since we presumed most alternative/ boho Brummies would be down t'festival.

For our first year of MFG! we are doing amazingly well and I would like to say a big "Nice one!!" to all those who have supported us. Especially the heads who are appreciating the dusty choons we spend most our disposable income on.

Time to sort more gigs around the UK/Europe methinks.

We have also decided to put on another MFG! presents gig- the theme is BBoy battles. Watch this space for more info.

The mama feel good! she-jays are very pleased to announce a DJ set at Shambala Festival on Bank Holiday weekend 24 - 26 August 07. Which is apparently (fingers crossed) set for a heat wave!

Shambala is a wild, creative, low-profile, green and family friendly festival. Que pasa! Went really well last month, the Hare and Hounds is a cool venue, but, because of it being in Kings Heath you don't get the same amount of passing trade like you do in Moseley. We had at least 150 paying guests and there was a great vibe!! Watching the pinatas get smahed apart was especially cool!!

I am a bone fide Brummie and had never been to the Diskery before today.

I had loads of fun getting through dusty records and listening to the funny stories the owner had about the different music venues that have come and gone in Birmingham.

I got a couple of bargains and sneezed a lot.

It's definitely worth a visit if you have never been there and you have a couple of hours to kill.

More about protecting your hearing

If you are worried about your ears hurting (previously mentioned by Sister 45) read on.

This is quite specific to residents in Brum, but, still quite useful anyway.

The most cost effective way to get your ears safe is to order your ear plugs online, get some discrete ones so your friends don't rip the piss and for comfort purposes too. Then pop along to a hearing aid centre and they can do you ear impression for around £20-30 squid. There is a place off New St that do them and in Kings Heath (Sietech) too.

I contacted Specsavers first but they refused to do just the ear impressions, they insist on selling you the ear plugs as well, which costs a total sum of £160 I think.

I am getting ear plugs from Earnet sounds for around £80 and will send my ear impressions off this week.

Can't wait to block out unnecessary decibels.

We played at Drop Beats Not Bombs on Sunday. We hosted the kitchen and it was lovely to have so many female DJs in one space! The last day of the Event it always a quieter affair but this did not stop our room from being really busy, there was a lovely vibe, and lots of dancing!! It also marked the anniversary of the MFG! Misfits meeting and it was a nice way to cement me and Amy’s love of funk by hosting a room in exactly the same place where we had our first chat!!

The Play Out DJs got the room pumped with their eclectic mix of funk, house and whatever goes choons and this was followed by Isis playing some lovely broken beat. Dr Tra brought it home with funk and Sister 45 and I propped ourselves up around 3.30am to keep the vibe going until 5.30am. Around that time the energy levels were at an all time low, so we decided to kill it with cheesy choons- Chaka Khan etc helped us clear the floor, aside from a few die hard mashups who would have danced to anything!! There were a lot of battered people and there were a couple of male punters fixated on DJs for the wrong reasons. In particular there was one guy stood by the banner for about 30 minutes staring at one of the Play Out DJs mesmerised. It was well weird.

Fryer mashed it up down t'yardbird

Last Friday, DJ Fryer came down to Brum to spin top class choons!
What I liked especially about his set was the turntabilsm- whilst chatting during the day, he told me he was a techno DJ when he was a young teen, and you could definitely tell that he has a more technical background because of the way he seamlessly mixed 45 after 45- including the beats being of a similar nature. I have to admit I am quite lazy with this and endeavour to sort my mixing out.

We also pulled in some proper funk heads who were really digging the beats. I had conversations with a northern soul collector and there were some beautiful older women down really getting down to the beats. They made my night!! I hope we get more people like them down!
