Hey there, readers of Mama Marchand's Nest!

I'm Kristen, the girl behind Confessions of a Graphic Design Student and today I have the pleasure of taking over Tricia's blog (and yes- you are obligated to read this!) I thought I would introduce myself through photos and facts about myself, since that's always fun, and a little more interesting than a bunch of my rambles... so here we go!

Fact #1: I've been married to my best friend for over 5 years... his name is Josh :)

Fact #2: We are proud owners of two adorable mini dachshunds, Sam and Nelly:

Fact #3: I'm an artist... I kinda always have been. This is one of my recent paintings called, "Circus Girl."

Fact #4: I've channeled my love for art towards graphic & web design, and I'm still learning all the tricks while I'm at school. This is one of my designs done in Illustrator:

Fact #5: One time I resembled Vitamin C during an experimentation with red hair color and blogged about it. Scary or hilarious? I think both.

Fact #6: I have a tattoo! I got my first one last year and I'm pretty much in love with it...

I've mentioned before that I'm not a baby person. I feel the need to clarify that a bit. I love babies. Not in the creepy way that my grandma does when she's at Wal-Mart but I absolutely love little squishy babies. Parenting one of them, though, was tough for me. We had a lot of other life stuff happening at the same time that we were trying to find a medical solution to N's severe reflux and my nursing issues.
It was not fun.

As N grew into the toddler she is now, the stress that culminated from those first few months of her life started to dissipate and I began to breathe a little easier. I thought "I love toddlerhood and I love that she's growing up." I even remarked to a friend, just a few weeks ago, that I was not one of those mamas who was sad that my baby was growing into a person.
Well, that has changed.
So much so that I'm writing this post with tear-filled eyes.

Maybe it was in the moment when she said said to me, "I'm a good girl". Maybe it was in the moment when she ran to me after falling off her toy car so I could kiss her "boo boo." Maybe it was in the moment when I realized that, in a few short years, a hug from me isn't going to fix her whole world. Maybe it was when I read my new mama friend's Facebook status that said "I hope to love whoever my son marries, just because she loves and takes care of my son." Maybe it was in the moment when I realized that our current nap struggles are nothing compared to what we may face in our future. Maybe it was in the moment, the quiet one, where she leaned her head back on my chest and happily sighed as we held hands, watching a movie.
Time, you can stop now.

My husband is the best gift-giver. One year he spoiled me with flowers at work, scheduled an hour long massage for me after work, and gave me a beautiful set of pearls during dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. I know - I'm one lucky wifey. :)

i lost ten pounds last night.

I did it. I went to Zumba last night. I almost didn't stay. As I looked around at the others waiting for the class to start, I felt ridiculously out of place. Everyone had cute clothes on and seemed totally comfortable with what was about to happen. I was thisclose to leaving but since I had already tweeted I was going, I had to follow through. Thanks, twitter, for holding me accountable. *wink*
Since there were at least one hundred people in that classroom, I chose a nice spot in the back row, hoping to blend in ... until the instructor asked if there were any newbies there. My hand shot into the air, almost as if it had a mind of its own, and I even had to share my name. Everyone clapped and whooped. Yes, WHOOPED. I think I turned the color of my hot pink t-shirt.
You know what?
Zumba ROCKED. I danced, I grooved, I did moves I didn't know I could do. I could barely walk out to my car and was convinced I was going to have to stop to throw up on the way home but I didn't. I felt amazing, I felt poweress, I felt like I could do this every single day!
I feel the same way this morning. While I didn't lose ten pounds, I did lose one so I'm officially down six since the beginning of January! My mini-goal is to lose twenty by the time I go to Creative Estates in March. I'm going back to another Zumba class tonight!

how to discipline a toddler.

That makes me sound like I know exactly what I'm doing. Let me be clear ... I don't! I guess I should have titled this post "how we discipline OUR toddler." Yeah, that's better. So, here goes.

Disciplining N tugs at my heart.

N is a good kid. She really is. She's sweet, affectionate, LOVES to help, and listens really well. There are times, though, when the latter just isn't happening. It might be because she's tired, hungry, or simply because she's a toddler. The hubs and I decided that implementing time outs was the most appropriate form of discipline for her at this stage.

Our house is small. Because of this, there aren't a lot of places to do a time out so we decided the best place for us was the rug in front of the kitchen sink. I read somewhere that time outs should last a minute for every year of their age. Well, she's almost two and she doesn't need two minutes ... more like 30 seconds.

When it gets to the point where this is the only thing left to do, I simply tell her "it's time out time" and carry her to the rug. I sit her down and gently tell her "you can come say you're sorry when you're ready ... Mama will be right over here." I stand about three feet away and pretend to busy myself with something so I can keep an eye on her and not let her think that I just left her there.

She'll cry for about thirty seconds, tears rolling down those cute cheeks of hers, but then she'll come over, give me a hug, and say "hi, Mama" when she's worked it out. It's her way of saying she's sorry. I tell her I love her and we continue on with our day. We've been doing this very occasionally for the last four months or so and it has worked for us.

The other day, she was refusing to nap. Oh, the crankiness. She had dumped the entire container of magnetic alphabet letters on the living room floor and then demanded a snack. Keep in mind, the girl had just eaten. As I was preparing it for her, I told her she needed to pick up her letters and then we'd eat goldfish together. "Noooooooooooooooooooo." I reiterated what I had just said. "Noooooooooooooooooo, CRACKERS!!!!" *sigh* I explained to her that she was not being a very good girl and that Mama would help her but she needed to pick up the mess she had made.

Well, she totally got it.

We picked up letters together while tears rolled out of those beautiful baby blue eyes. In the midst of our clean up, which only lasted a minute or two, she turns to me and says "Mama, I'm a good girl." And then tears started rolling out of MY blue eyes. I hugged her and told her I knew that but that she needed to listen. We shared goldfish and enjoyed an episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

My heart broke a little that day.

Again, this is what works for us. It might all change when N turns two, three or four but for now, it's effective and it's helping her learn that there are consequences to her actions if she's not acting nicely. I know discipline is good for her but holy cow ... it is TOUGH. And I thought 2 am feedings and blow outs were rough ... *sigh*

Y'all have probably noticed the blog name change by now, right? Well, a dear friend asked me if I'm in love with birds since they're all over my blog and shop. I had to laugh because ... are you ready for this? I'm not a big fan of birds, in real life, at all. Weird, right?
I just love the concept of the nest.
You see, birds take seemingly unwanted things & random objects and build beautiful nests out of them. Their nests are their homes, the place where they raise their little ones. I think it's lovely! Thus, the concept of upcycling is worked into my Etsy shop, Mama's Nest Designs. And now? Nest is a part of my name here because this blog is not only a place where I talk about random things {we like to call it lifestyle in the bloggy world} but it's also my online home.

Yes, I did it! I changed my blog name. After writing about my dislike for my old blog name and reading your comments, I realized that all of you were EXACTLY right. If my blog name doesn't fit who I am and how I write, then I should change it! So, I did! You are currently reading the very first post under the blog name Mama Marchand's Nest!
I had mentioned that I had two names in my mind ... well, this is a combination of those two and I love it. I can keep my domain name the same, I'm still "mama marchand," and it coordinates with my Etsy shop, Mama's Nest Designs. It's not a huge change but it's perfect for me. *smile*

name change?

I've been thinking about this for awhile and I've been nervous to bring it up on my blog. It's scary, it will require some work, and I'm just plain anxious.

I'm considering changing the name of my blog.

*gasp*

WAY back when I started this little blog, I thought Marchand's Musings was cute. It had alliteration {which I love} and I thought it was clever. Now? Notsomuch. I added the Mama when I had N but it still just didn't seem to fit. In fact, when I visit my sponsor features on other blogs, I actually think to myself "who is Mama Marchand's Musings? Oh ..."

Weird, huh?

It just doesn't fit me anymore.

So, I've been contemplating a name change. Something that fits me much more than my current name does. A name that actually brings a smile to my face! I have two in mind and I'm not sure which ones to use. One would make my life a lot easier ... I could stick with the same domain name and just tweak my buttons I bit. The other? It would require A LOT of work but I kinda like that name better. *sigh*

What do you think? Should I do it?

It's no secret that I love handmade. In fact, way back before sponsors and lots of readers, I used to buy handmade items from my favorite shops to give away on here ... just because! Now that I'm an Etsy shop owner myself, I realize how important it is to support each other.

I am so excited to introduce you to someone who probably needs no introduction at all! Casey is such an inspiration in so many ways but I truly appreciate the honest way she pours out her heart on her blog and how gutsy she is in her business endeavors, trusting God with all of it! It's those two aspects of her life that I asked her to talk about today.

What has been your biggest struggle since becoming a mama?

My biggest struggle since being a mama is having open hands. Letting other people love them, trusting that they will be safe when I am not around and just surrendering to my fears of losing them!

What has been your greatest joy since becoming a mama?

My greatest joy since being a mama is truly everything about it. I have always longed to be a mama and it truly is better than I could have ever imagined.

If you could offer one piece of advice to new, expecting mamas, what would it be?

My biggest advice would be to do what feels best to you!!!! I have done mostly the opposite of the "norm" amongst my friends.....my toddlers still drink bottles, we cosleep and we arent big on schedules....do what is best for you and your family. You're the mama, you know what is best!

What is the biggest struggle you’ve faced in being an indie biz owner?

Biggest struggle as an indie biz owner is that my husband and I are both freelancers, we have no consistent income so there are times that is a little crazy but honestly in the past 4 months God has been really blessing our business' and we are extremely thankful for that!!!!!

What has been your greatest triumph in your business?

My greatest triumph is that my husband and I are both living out our dreams and providing for our family while doing so!

What is one thing you’d tell someone who was thinking about becoming self-employed?

I would say follow your dreams. God has designed us all for a purpose and He will bless you for trusting Him and taking that leap.

i am a detox machine.

I am. I really am.

Remember this post? Well, I did pretty well on the detox. The support of Lisa {of Whole Health Designs}, Shell, Missy, and the many others participating helped SO much! When I was confronted with my daily sugar craving at 2:30 pm, they were there to say "no chocolate!" and hold me accountable. I had a piece of pizza one day and ended up sneaking a cookie or two another, but, mostly, stuck to the detox program {vegan for 10 days!} and lost a few pounds.

The two hardest parts of the detox for me were the aforementioned afternoon craving and the fact that I wasn't eating dinner with the hubs and N. Because of our chaotic evening schedule during the week, they would be eating while I was still preparing my food.

The day after the detox ended, day eleven, I hit the "normal" food hard. I was just so ready to be done that I ate like it was my job and, oh man, did I pay for it. I got SO sick and realized that this was my body's way of telling me "you're done with this binge eating." And so I was.

I am still detoxing for breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

Here are some examples of my meals:

Breakfast: fresh fruit {strawberries, blueberries, bananas} with raisins, a few crushed almonds, a little bit of dried coconut flakes, and cinnamon; homemade oatmeal; a blueberry, banana & spinach smoothie

Lunch: homemade roasted red pepper soup with quinoa & avocado; sweet potato salad with apple, avocado, onion, lime juice, & cilantro; spinach salad with toasted pumpkin seeds & homemade lemon & EVOO dressing

Snacks: handful of nuts; apple with a little bit of raw nut butter; raw veggies with a little bit of hummus; a small Greek yogurt

Dinner: I'm eating with the hubs and N but I'm eating considerably less of a portion than before my detox

I learned A LOT this time around. I learned that I could eat good and fresh food and still feel full and satisfied. I learned to recognize when I was hungry and when I was just bored. I learned that I had the self-control to fight the sugar cravings. I learned that I prefer water with lemon to most other beverages.

The most important lesson I learned is that moderation is good for me.

A piece of pizza or freshly baked chocolate chip cookie are not inherently bad. I can enjoy those from time to time but I can't eat them all in one day. If I know I'm going to be eating out for dinner or at an event where I can't control my meal, I'm going to eat light during the day. It's a simple concept and one that I'm embarrassed to admit took me almost thirty years to learn.

Speaking of moderation, I received a sweet surprise yesterday from my dear friend, Joanna of ModaMama:

I'm going to eat those chocolates and enjoy every single one. Just not all in one sitting!

Once upon a time, I felt like I totally lost my fashion sense. In fact, after having N, all I wanted to do was hide my postpartum belly in yoga pants and under t-shirts. Actually, most days now, that's what I wear at home because, seriously? A toddler, armed with macaroni & cheese, crayons, and snot, can do some serious damage to nice cothes. So, what's the point?

Well, the point is that while I love the days I'm in comfy attire {and, in fact, bought this t-shirt to prove it}, I also need to wear nice clothes sometimes. From time to time, the frump look gets to me and starts to affect my 'tude. On those days, I'll throw on a nicer top, a pair of jeans, and some cute accessories, just so I can feel human {and pretty}.

You may have noticed that I don't participate in some of the popular fashion and outfit linkies. I want to, trust me. It's just that I'm self-conscious of my weight right now. If you've been a reader for awhile, you know I've been on a journey to lose my marriage & baby weight and since the start of this year, I'm down four pounds! I must tell you ... the fact that I'm going to Creative Estates in March has kept that New Year's resolution at the forefront of my mind and I'm making lifestyle changes that are good and healthy. I'll post more about that tomorrow!

Someday in the near future, I will participate in What I Wore Wednesday.

But, in the mean time, here are a few outfits I put together over on my newest addiction, Polyvore. That way, you can get a sense of my current style, even if you're not seeing this on me ... yet.
