That's so retarded. What a retard. You're such a tard. STOP, THINK, SPEAK! Amazing how one word can hurt so many. Take the pledge, help change things.

As most of you know, I am the mother to a son that happens to have Down syndrome. Eian changed my life in many, many ways. Let's go back to my early school days. I am just as guilty as many for using the word retard/retarded. My mom is a nurse and at one point (I don't remember my age) became the head nurse for our local Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDS) group. I spent many days with her at work. I got to know the wonderful individuals. They were people just like you and me, they just happen to have something called a disability. Not long after one of the girls that worked with my mom in the office had a baby girl that also happened to have Down syndrome. I remember meeting Austyn in the grocery store. This adorable little girl sitting in the front of the cart. I think at that point I was instantly drawn to Down syndrome. I then saw Chandler in his daddy's ad in the paper for his construction company and I just wanted to have him.

See I'm leading up to my own time working with DDS. Shortly after Alex was born I had to get a job. I was 21 with a new baby and bills to pay. I went to work for DDS doing respite care. I provided respite care for Justin, he was just like a brother to me. I had know him since he was a little thing, as our moms were friends. He has cerebral palsy and was in a wheel chair. He was just going into high school. My job was to pick him up from school, help him with whatever he need till time to put him in bed, while his mom worked. We had a very close bond and very got in trouble together a few times. I worked with him for on and off for 4 years. Had Eian during the 4 years. Justin loved both boys (and now all 3) they are his nephews. I even went to the Military Ball with him for JROTC.

My point to all this is I believe I was just being prepped to be Eian's mommy.

When he was born and we finally got the official diagnoses of DS (6 weeks later and don't get me started on that.) I jumped right into getting appointments, therapies etc set up for him. I already knew what I was in for with IEPs and how some people viewed special needs. I then stepped up and made it my mission to educate all that I could. My son has Down syndrome. Down syndrome does not have him.

So back to the topic at hand, the R-word. It was originally a medical term giving to people with special needs.

Mental Retardation-subaverage intellectual ability equivalent to or less than an IQ of 70 that is accompanied by significant deficits in abilities (as in communication or self-care) necessary for independent daily functioning, is present from birth or infancy, and is manifested especially by delayed or abnormal development, by learning difficulties, and by problems in social adjustment.

At some point it was turned in to a slur to insult people. It has to be stopped, words hurt.

The R-word is the word 'retard(ed)'. Why does it hurt? The R-word hurts because it is exclusive. It's offensive. It's derogatory.

Our campaign asks people to pledge to stop saying the R-word as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people. Language affects attitudes and attitudes affect actions. Pledge today to use respectful, people-first language.-From r-word.org.

Today I have cupcakes to take to his class for him to share then after school we are going to McDonald's to eat and play then have cake and his gifts at home.

OMG My Water Broke (Birth Story)
Tuesday i woke up to my phone ringing it was my grandma she was having trouble breathing and i got up at 5:30am and me and alex took her to the er we where there til 8 and we took her home. i had my appt at 9 am to see my new dr and have the gbs done so i left alex at my grandparents and went. i waited an hour to see the dr and after the appt we called and set my new c-sec date since i was changing hospitals and set it for 10-26 well i left and went back to get alex. we stayed there until about 12:30pm and i got alex up to leave took him to the car and my water broke. so we had my grandma and aunt take us to my moms so she could take us to the hospital i called joel at work and told him. we all got to the hospital at about 2 and it took my dr 2 hrs to get there all the time i'm leaking and having contrations. well after my dr got there they decided to transfer me to a level 3 hospital since i was only 35 weeks and off we went in the ambluance. we got there at about 6 and had to wait until 8pm for the c-sec. we went back and it took them almost an hour to get Eian out cuz i had so much scar tissue from alex. he came out at 8:59pm screaming and he weighted 6lbs and 5oz and is doing great he's a lil sleepy head and you have to wake him to geth him to eat but we got to come home today. his big brother alex just loves him so much. i'm doing good too. this c-sec was much easier than my first.

Eian's Down syndrome

When Eian was 2 days old he came back from the nursery with lots of stick marks. The nurse told me they were trying to do blood work on him. I figured normal newborn stuff. They took him back later to try again, this time they tried the side of his head. I asked my nurse what kinda blood work was it and if they had finally been able to get enough my poor baby have been stuck arms, feet and head now. She looked puzzled and said hasn't the dr talked to you. I told her no I hadn't seen the ped this morning one never came it. She told me she'd have one come talk to me later. Looking back I should have been worried and demanded to see one then, but I didn't. Later that night while I had a room full of visitors 2 drs came in to see me about Eian I think I knew something was up cuz there was 2 of them. They asked if I wanted my company to leave so they could talk I told them no cuz I didn't wanna be alone plus it was my morther in law and sisters in law. Anyways mind you it's around 9pm or so (sorry that day is kinda fuzzy) I'm 45 mins from home and my mom has Alex at home keeping him and Joel was at home cuz he had to work in the morning. Back to the story, the one dr says we think your baby may have Down syndrome, He has a few characteristics but not alot so we aren't sure. He then pointed out the ones he had, Folds in the eyes, gap toe. he told me they think they got enough blood and the results should be back in a week and left. I just looked at my perfect baby that had made it coming early and had not never any help. MIL cried my SIL called my mama. My mama asked her if she'd come get Alex so she could come up and be with me. So after they left I was alone for a good almost 2 hrs while they drove home them my mom drove up. I cried and she stayed with me and fell asleep hold Eian in the chair. I text Joel to call when he woke up since it was late I didn't wanna call and wake him up. He called me about 30 mins later I told him what the dr had said. and he told me everything would be ok that DS or not Eian would be just fine. So the next day my mom had to go to work and they sent a soc worker to see me with some pamphlets. the dr put me back on my prozac and keep me an extra day so I didn't do anything to the baby (seriously dr I was away from home no one to stay with me since he came early and ya'll have just gave me the news you thought he had ds but werent sure. I just wanted to go home)

Fast forward took the lab 6 weeks to get us the results, by then I knew he had DS I could tell and had done all sorts of research. I just need official results to get him in therapy and etc.

I married my best friend, the father of my children, my soul mate, my high school sweet heart, my first love, etc etc. Somedays it seems like just yesterday that I was sitting there while he read the letter I wrote asking him to be my boyfriend on the day before Valentines day. Other days it seems like we've been together forever, after all it'll be 13 years Feb 2013. I love Joel more than I've ever loved anyone. He's had my heart long before that day I gave him the letter.

If you’ve taken a trip with children before, you know it can be more difficult than regular travel. You have to keep a lot of extra variables in mind when planning, and the day you travel can be stressful if you aren’t prepared. International travel is the same and, in some ways, worse. There’s no need to worry, however, because if you’re prepared it will be an easy and fun trip. Keep these tips in mind before you leave the country on a trip with your children:

- Prepare to get out of the country

There are more restrictions and requirements for travel outside the United States than there are when you travel within the country. Things got even more complicated after 9/11 in the name of safety. You need to prepare based on the restrictions here and abroad. The United States requires a passport when leaving and entering the country, which means you’ll need to get one for your kids. You can find out more information at the government site for passports. You’ll also need to look into the country you’ll be visiting to make sure you can follow its requirements. If you’re prepared you won’t have any issues when you leave.

- Make plans for an easy flight

When you’re flying out of the country you need to have a solid plan for keeping the kids happy and occupied during the flight. Each child should get a backpack that’s full of everything they would need during the trip. This can be anything from games to fight boredom to snacks so your kid doesn’t go off on a screaming fit because of low blood sugar. The children should be involved with packing the backpack as well. If you let them choose some of the stuff they bring along the flight will definitely be much easier.

- Prepare for the new place

So if you’re prepared beforehand and your flight goes off well, then you’re in the clear, right? Not so fast. Jet lag is an issue that comes up on long international flights, and it affects children just as much as it does adults. You can combat the effects if you start early. The week before your trip you should try to get your kids on a sleeping schedule that’s similar to the new time zone. You might not be able to match it completely depending on the situation, but you should definitely try to get as close as you can. Your kids might still get hit with some jet lag, but it won’t be as bad if you prepare beforehand.

- Have fun

Sometimes we can forget the reason for travel in the first place. For the most part, these kinds of trips are meant for enjoyment and education. It’s easy to lose sight of the purpose of your trip, especially when things get stressful. It’s important to keep a level head and relaxed attitude when you’re abroad. You want your kids to remember the great trip and cultural experiences, not the time you flipped out over something small. Do whatever you have to do to keep the stress levels low.

2. Eating Out

This sounds like common sense, but too many people think they can wing it with just eating fast food or eating at cheap restaurants. That's not a good idea. For one, it's unhealthy. Secondly, you will inevitably have to spend more money on medical and dental expenses because of the negative consequences of eating food that’s so bad for you. It's all right to purchase food in bulk at Wal-Mart or Target, as long as it is healthy food. Simply make sure that you are getting all your essential nutrients by alternating between carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and water. Another great rule of thumb is to not purchase soda or candy at the store, no matter how tempting it may be. Friendly tip: don't let your kids go shopping with you! They might make that last goal very hard to achieve.

3. Gas

Going out a lot means driving around a lot. Gas is expensive these days, and you’d be surprised how much you’ll save if you cut your gas budget in half. Try to save money by getting your kids to ride their bikes in certain areas, and take your family on daily bike trips when weather is nice. This is a good way to get some exercise too, perhaps saving a trip to the gym!

4. Games

A great way to have fun at home is to play a few board games, because you can easily get to know one another around the kitchen table. Friends can come over too, and this way, you can keep a good watch on your children, rather than have them out and about. Furthermore, you can also save money by serving dinner at home, rather than giving your kids each money to go out and get dinner.

Throwing a Great Kid’s Birthday Party

If you’re like me and you have more than one child and are married that means there are a lot of birthdays to plan every single year. Each and every child deserves to feel special, but you also can’t go crazy stressing about throwing the perfect birthday party. Over the years I have learned a few tricks to help keep the stress low and the fun way, way up.

I am here to tell you that there is no rule or even suggestion in any etiquette book or social norm that states you have to invite a ton of people to the party. The whole point of the party is to make your kid feel special and that is easily accomplished with their closest friends in an intimate setting.

When it comes to entertainment you have two options: at home or away. The temptation of having an offsite birthday party at a park, science center, skating rink or arcade is tempting, but make sure that you employ extra adults to help you keep an eye on the kids. If you’re going to host the party at your house, try creating a treasure hunt for the kids or set up a crafts table so they can get all messy together and take home their projects. It also helps to inspire activities to pick out a theme like Super Mario Bros. where you can decorate the house with Super Mario party supplies and have video games set up for the kids to play and give away sacks filled with chocolate gold coins.

As far as food is concerned, there is nothing wrong with simply ordering pizza. Hot dogs are another choice and you can even get organic ones if you want to go the healthy route. As far as the cake goes, unless you really like baking, you can get a bakery to handle that part and that way you can get some fancy decoration to go along with the theme of the party.

In the end your son or daughter will have the most fun if you’re having fun too. So, make your game plan and then relax a little when the party gets underway so you can enjoy those precious moments and celebrate the life of your child.

Robert is just up from his nap — and look how bright-eyed he is! He has a couple of little teeth peeking out on the bottom, too

He has Down syndrome and a patent foramen ovale – which is a small hole between the chambers of the heart. This is common in childhood, and often closes without any medical intervention.

These children are blessed to be in an excellent orphanage, however this region typically requires 3 trips. This is a great orphanage and the children receive excellent care, and there is minimal travel in-country. This orphanage is close to the Capital city, so it's fantastic for sight-seeing.

We have had many successful adoptions from this orphanage, and families are willing to share their experiences.

Victoria Has Been Found

So about a week or so ago Victoria moved to the My Family Found Me page. I was so excited I cried. Then I got a wonderful email from Victoria's forever mommy, thanking me for being Victoria's Christmas Warrior and raising money for her adoption. It made me cry even more, Joel proli thought I had lost my mind laying on the bed crying like a baby reading emails on my phone. Anyways I wanted to wait until they had announced it before I posted anything about it. I'm happy to announce that Victoria is gonna be a big sister to two little sisters, Kaelyn & Bryn. I can't wait to follow this adoption. I've followed alot of DS adoptions on blogs and facebook but this one is special to me. This is the little girl I wished and prayed about for many months.

Yes my friends it's that time of year again. CHRISTMAS!!!!!!

I'm not sure why I've been having such a hard time over the last year or so keeping up with this blog. I used to do so good. Dunno what it is....I mean sure the 3 boys keep me busy and all but I find time to Facebook...Sure I've had to stop writing twice since I started this post, once to save my 1 year old that got stuck in the kitchen cabinet and again to pour the sleepy 4 year old some milk. The boys have been awake since before 6:30am and are in need of naps or maybe its mama that needs a nap. Anyways......The kids are doing good. We've been in NY for almost a year now.

Alex is doing great in school. His teacher just loves him. He needs to work on not yelling out the answers and letting others have a chance but his teacher said he's always right lol. He's learning to read and doing good at it. He says he loves math and he learned to tie his shoes (thanks to Mr Paul making him sit and practice till he learned). He told me he wants to spend his summer in SC again this coming summer. I told him I'd have to see what I could do. He's made 2 good friends up here and they take turns spending nights with each other on the weekends and let me tell you have 5 boys in the house is fun lol.

Eian is learning so much in school. His communication has improved so much. He still has a lot to work on, but he's finally putting 3-4 words together to make a sentence. Even if it is "dada woo phone" he still got his point across telling on Will for playing with daddy's phone. I wish communication was as easy for him as it is for his brothers. We are trying to find away to get him an Ipad to use to help with it, but that will be after tax time before we can make it happen. I'm working on making him a picture wall to help at home. His behaviors are about the same, still hitting, biting and throwing things when he gets made which is very often. He finally got a one on one aide at school, hopefully that will cut down on those behaviors at school. After the new year I'm gonna work on getting him so respite care from the Army (he qualifies) so that I can get a small break. We are still no were near potty training but he's gotten to the point where only diaper he doesn't wet threw are the over night ones.

Will is so much like Alex and Eian it ain't funny. He talks nonstop and is a mean little thing. He has started talking back. He loves to dance and play with his brothers. He thinks he's just as big as they are. He's still a little peanut at under 24lbs and still in size 3 diapers. He loves to help mommy around the house. This year is gonna be a fun Christmas for him now that he's older. I need to take him back to the dr he's got one more shot he needs to get.

Oh did I tell you I've had to stop 3 more times since the last time. Dirty diaper, pour Alex a drink and get little kids outta my bedroom where daddy is sleeping. We are going home for Christmas, we leave in 13 days. I can't wait I miss the South and my family and friends. I miss my Shuggy dog too. I'm almost finished wrapping gifts. I got a few more bows to make before I leave for Christmas and clean the house. I asked Joel last month what he wanted for Christmas and he told me there wasn't anything he wanted so we decided to have a real date night while we are home. Just me and him, no worrying about kids, sitters, or anything. So family is gonna watch the kids and we are gonna have some much needed us time as our Christmas gifts to each other. I can't wait. Well I guess I better finish up the tiny kid got quite and no telling what he's into.

Getting Ready For Christmas

This year we will be going back home to SC for Christmas. Our tree and most of our decorations are back there. So I bought a used 4ft pre-lit tree and found a box of our ornaments that got sent up with our stuff in Feb when the Army brought it up. We set the tree up on our desk in the livingroom.

The boys are counting down till time for us to head home. I have most of the gifts bought and waiting to be wrapped. I picked out the boys own special wrapping paper. Every year they each get their own paper so we dont have to worry about reading names on gifts Christmas morning this year Will has Mickey Mouse, Eian has Scooby Doo and Alex has Spongebob.

We are going to have pictures made tomorrow and I'll get started on our Christmas Cards soon as we get them back.
