So it is Spring Break and your kids want to go to the beach. But you live in Atlanta. Where do you go that is relatively close and family-friendly, but still has the touch of luxury that Mom and Dad are looking for? Well, I just found out the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort and Spa is just that place.

Located on Ponte Vedra Beach, one of the beach communities surrounding Jacksonville, Florida, the Sawgrass Marriott is first and foremost a golfer’s paradise. It is home to five world-class courses, the Players Championship each May, and also hosts several golf tournaments throughout the year. (Tim Tebow was hosting his charity tournament and gala at the resort when we were there!) But, since we aren’t exactly a family of golfers (my husband’s clubs have more than a little dust on them) I wasn’t sure if we would fit in. But boy was I wrong. Sure, Sawgrass is a golfer’s delight, but they are much, much more.

Cabana Beach Club

I loved that all guests at Sawgrass have access to the private Cabana Beach Club, which has direct beach access, a great pool, several restaurants, and even a playground. It had a luxe country-club vibe and created a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. We spent the whole day at the Club, which is probably why we ended up dealing with some sunburn issues the next day. Ouch! Don’t miss the excellent food at Sea Porch for lunch. The North Beach nachos, with black beans, corn, and pico de gallo, were SO good! Going this summer? Sawgrass Spa
I also had the opportunity to check out the Spa at Sawgrass. I almost didn’t go because my sunburn was so painful I couldn’t imagine handling a massage, but I’m so glad I did. My masseuse knew just what to do. She whipped up a rosemary-infused aloe mixture and it immediately calmed my irritated skin. She was extra gentle and super sweet. For Moms out there, I highly recommend building a spa day/afternoon/hour (whatever you can do) into any family vacation. Kids are not allowed so it’s just about you relaxing. At Sawgrass, be sure to get there early to enjoy the sauna, take a dip in the private pool, enjoy a smoothie from the smoothie bar or spend extra time in the relaxation room. Ahhh…
Activities

In addition to all the golfing you can do, there are family activities galore as well. From bike riding (two hour rentals are free), swimming (2 pools), table tennis, a playground, and miniature golf (also free). They also offer a supervised kids’ club and a kids’ night out program (ages 5-12). We also enjoyed just walking around the grounds, quacking at the ducks, smelling the flowers, and letting the kids run through the lush grass.

Accommodations
We stayed in a two-bedroom villa, which was great for our family. With two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a full living room and kitchen, we certainly had room to spread out. It was comfortable and fun to have our own little hideaway while still being close to the main hotel. I can only imagine being there with just my husband! I was given a sneak peek into a villa they are updating as part of the resort-wide “refresh” and it was super chic and even more upscale. I can’t wait to go back next year when everything is done! For those who don’t want or need a villa, the standard rooms are inside the main hotel and thete are often discounts for Georgia and Florida residents!
Sawgrass Marriott has the relaxed, laid-back vibe I’ve encountered at other north Florida beach resorts. It is luxurious without all pretense. It is sophisticated without trying too hard. It is family-friendly without losing the romantic vibe that those lucky kid-free couples enjoyed. At about 350 miles from Atlanta, Sawgrass Marriott is easily accessible. It is a beach resort the whole family can enjoy! I can’t wait to go back and see all the updates!

When researching, check the roofing contractor’s website for before-and-after photos. Look for large pictures and details of any recent jobs they have completed. If there are any pictures that also explain the projects, make sure they show that the projects have been completed by this particular contractor. There have been contractors who use stock photos or steal ones from another contractor to pretend like it’s their own work. Look for watermarks on the photos too to ensure it is their own work.

Another idea is to ask for videos of their work as well. Finding videos is a great way for a contractor to showcase their work and educate you on roofing techniques you may want to use.

5. Ask for references.

Finding a roofing contractor is basically like conducting an interview. You wouldn’t hire the first person to show up, nor would you take their word for it that they’re telling the truth. Try to find 3-5 companies you feel comfortable working with and request as many references for jobs in the area as they can provide. Ask them for both recently completed jobs and one that is a few years old.

Look up their references and talk with these past customers about their level of satisfaction with the contractor and whether the job was done on time and professionally. If you are able to, take a drive out to any of the homes to look at their work. You will be investing a lot of money in your new roof. With four kids, I have had to prepare up to 100 Valentine’s Day cards to hand out for classroom parties. Seriously. Now that the kids are older, though, I am not burning the midnight oil preparing the best Superman cards I can find. The pressure is off me. Instead of stressing out, I can now work on making this holiday fun.

Valentine’s Day used to mean flowers, candy, and date nights. For many families with younger kids, now it means class parties, finding nut-free heart cookies and a late-night glass of wine with your spouse. And honestly, I’ve always been ok with that trade-off. With teenagers, we actually have a whole Valentine’s Day weekend planned! I can’t wait!

For those of you still in the thick of it with small children, you, too, will get through this stressful period. And then you’ll miss it! In order to embrace the loveliest of holidays, check out these six tips to make this time of year much easier and more relaxing.

6 Easy Tips for Kids Valentines

1. Start early.

You know what you don’t want to do when it comes to making kids valentines? Wait until the last minute. Do not be the mom rushing through Target trying to snag the last few boxes of Valentine’s Day cards on the shelves. Start now. Like today. If possible, try to order the same cards for all your kids. It will just make your life simpler.

2. Make it fun.

This is one of those steps I tend to forget. I am all about crossing things off the list. However, I find that I can be stressed out and don’t always make it as much fun as I could. Let yourself go and let loose a little with the kids. I adore this adorable mason jar craft from Juicy Juice. It’s a sweet way to get the kids crafting. Plus, the cars are totally useful!

3. Include treats.

Everyone likes treats, so look for ways to include candy, stickers or something fun with the kids valentines. Also, have snacks on hand when you are making those valentines. I keep Juicy Juice Juicy Waters in the refrigerator for times like this, when the kids need a quick pick-me-up but in a way I can feel good about. And, don’t tell the kids, but I drink as many of these juice boxes as they do. Who says moms can’t sip too?

4. Let the kids do it.

Ok moms. Put down the scissors. Set aside the glue gun. Stop doing the work your kids can do. Even 5-year-olds can sign their own names. They won’t do it perfectly. They won’t do it like you would do it, but let them do it anyway. Be ok with perfect imperfection. Help them be ok with imperfection.

5. Keep it simple.

In order to let the kids make their own valentines, you have to keep things as simple as possible. The store-bought perforated-edged cards make it super easy. For those who want to get a little more original, think about using Valentine’s Day stickers to dress up paper hearts or store-bought cards. Pink and red gift bags are excellent for collecting all the valentines the kids will get. Simple, remember?

6. Don’t overthink.

I am a big overthinker. I know that about myself, so I am trying to change it. The truth is, I worry too much about what people think, what other moms are doing, and what else I could be doing. Instead, I encourage younger moms to try their best to just stay in the moment. Overthinking can rob me (and you?) of the joy of right now. My kids will never be between the ages of 12 and 7 again. And neither will yours. I won’t have to attend another 2nd-grade class party, but maybe you can? It is such a cliche, but it remains true: IT. ALL. GOES. SO. FAST.

I don’t know about you, but I am barely keeping my head above water. I have a bad habit of comparing myself to others, and it seems everyone is doing well. Truth is, I’m not. And maybe the Truth is that the PARENTS ARE NOT OK either. Maybe?

When you’re looking for fun, EASY, simple things to do with the kids, here are a couple of suggestions. Did I mention they are easy?

Tips for Staying Active at Home with Kids

Find some simple crafts you can do with the kids (or they can do themselves).

Check out some of my favorite craft posts. I am not a crafty person by nature, but my kids adore ‘making’. We don’t do anything Pinterest-worthy, but we do have fun.

• Crafts that won’t mess up your house.
• Crafts your kids can do without you.
• Create a Family Time Bottle
• Crafts you can do in less than 30 minutes.
• Crafts for upcoming holidays.
• Science activities to do in your own backyard.

Break out those teen and tween boredom busters.

If you have a 10-year-old or older, especially if they have hit that angsty stage, you may find that they are always like totally bored. If there is more eye-rolling, door slamming or subtle side-eyes going on in your house, here are some ideas for you.

• Go for a hike or bike ride and let them plan and lead it. You can find 125+ hikes for beginners here if you want to get out of your neighborhood. Just be sure to stay socially distanced plese.
• Let them search your pantry and take over meal prep.
• Organize zoom get togethers with friends. Virtual book clubs, Netflix parties, or “study sessions” are good excuses.
• Getting some chores out of the way helps make tweens and teens so much less surly! Check out my cleaning ideas for this.
• Check out these activities for tweens now that the weather is getting warmer.

Get cooking.

Load up on baking ingredients like cake, brownie, and cookie mixes. Look through all those recipes posted online. You can try your hand at the Doubletree Chocolate Chip Cookies or the infamous sourdough loaf, again if you have the time. Or why not have your kids make dinner for you? Get it off your to-do list. I created the Chef For A Day program in my house during 2020. The day’s chef prepares, makes, and cleans up lunch for everyone. It’s been a big hit. Other things you can encourage kids to do:

• Make a smoothie or milkshake. Use 100% juice to help kids get the fruit they may not otherwise get.
• Encourage the kids to use up leftovers for dinner.
• Plan out a fun breakfast (or breakfast for dinner).

Wash the car.

If it is warm enough near you, get your kids doing something they think is fun and you know is work. Tom Sawyer those kids. Washing windows, mowing the lawn, raking leaves or something similar might be “fun” for the kids too. Think of something you have never let them do before.

Start up a club.

Staying active at home with kids means you have to find new ways to get together with friends. Create a LEGO club, a book club, a cooking club, or whatever. Just figure out what you and your kids like and set up a time to do it with friends.

Get outside and start a challenge.

It is proven that getting outside can help elevate our moods. And I need all the elevation help I can get! But just going outside can be boring, right? How about starting a challenge with the kids? Try to do something your family doesn’t normally do. There are some awesome benefits of simply taking a walk with your family. Ideas could include:

• Jump rope
• Free throws
• Hula hooping
• Four Square
• Scavenger hunt
• Frisbee

Plant a garden.

When I say “plant a garden” for staying active at home with kids, I do not mean the bountiful garden of your dreams. I mean, digging in the dirt, throwing some seeds out, maybe pulling out an old planter and seeing if you can revive that plant… don’t go crazy. Also, don’t feel like you need to go to a store to get supplies for this. Have Home Depot deliver or just make do with what you have. It’s not about the final result, I’m learning, but the process. I’ve found you can have a lot of seeds shipped to you.

Celebrate…anything.

Look for something to brighten up the week and give you something to look forward to. Do you have a birthday coming up? Or a half birthday? Or go big for Cinco de Mayo. The food at Great Wolf Lodge is as healthy (or decadent) as you want it to be. There are multiple options throughout the day, including buffet, grab-and-go, and sit-down options. All of them cater to families and offer a variety of food. Check out some of our tips:

• Make dinner reservations early. I am a huge fan of family dinners, especially when traveling. Use it as a time to catch up. On our first night, the sit-down restaurant had no walk-in availability. We ended up reserving a table for a late dinner at 8:30 p.m., and in the meantime, shared some chicken fingers from the counter service restaurant to tide us over.
• Bring snacks, especially for picky eaters. While outside food and drink are not allowed in the water park, you can bring them into the hotel room. You will definitely still want to experience the delicious offerings through the Lodge, but having fruit snacks, granola bars, or juice boxes can help keep kids from getting hangry. Most rooms have a mini-refrigerator you can use. During our visit, a microwave was also available for public use in the vending vestibule. 
• Consider when you eat. The waterpark may exhaust the kids, so plan a quick dinner earlier in the day. Or wait to eat until after the waterpark closes at 8 p.m. and then hit the dry activities with the Wolf Pass, too.
• Use the lodge’s app. Download the Great Wolf Lodge app before you arrive. It is very helpful! It shows what’s happening, allows you to avoid crowded zones and helps you coordinate where to eat and when.

Great Wolf Lodge Family Value Guide: Safety & comfort = peace of mind

Some of the most under-appreciated values at Great Wolf Lodge are: safety and ease. Great Wolf Lodge is a one-stop shop, a resort you don’t need to leave between checking in and checking out. I was able to give my kids the independence they crave without too much anxiety on my part. Things to consider:

• The waterpark was well-staffed. I spent half a day just watching lifeguards (between reading my latest book and sipping on a frosty drink). They were vigilant, roaming, and attentive. I even saw them participating in a staged drill. I felt comfortable letting my older kids go off on their own.
• Teens can really benefit from the ability to be independent. The wristbands we received at check-in acted as room keys, water-park entry, and optional charge privileges. The kids could have more control than at other resorts we visited. 
• Parking is reasonable. At the LaGrange location, we paid $19/day for self-parking in a lot a quick walk from the lobby. I thought this was remarkably well-priced for a resort hotel, which helps the “total cost” equation.

What are the age highlights for school-age kids at Great Wolf Lodge?

School-age kids (let’s say 6-12 or even teens) have a lot to love at Great Wolf Lodge. We weren’t initially sure the kids would be into it, but once we forced them to put their phones down, they could get in the groove of being kids again. It was sweet to see them rediscover the joy of playing without worrying about being “cool”. My kids talked about how much fun they had coming to Great Wolf when they were little, and it was sweet to see how much they had grown. From our experience (and the resort’s offerings), here are key highlights for families with older kids:

• Water park: The indoor water park includes various slides, a lazy river, and a wave pool. There are splash zones for younger kids and more thrilling options for older children. One of the water slides was so scary that my six-foot-tall, 15-year-old football player said it was the most frightening ride he had ever experienced!
• MagiQuest: This is an interactive wand-based quest game that many school-age kids find magical. At the LaGrange hotel, it is available until midnight (though kids need to have adults with them after 11 p.m.).
• Northern Lights Arcade: After the water park closes, the arcade is open for hours, giving kids another way to expend energy.
• Ropes course and climbing wall: For more adventurous kids, there are dry activities to break up the swimming.
• Bowling and Mini-Golf: For group activities, bowling and mini-golf are fantastic for teens. They were open until 9 p.m., letting my kids get their competitive juices flowing. 
• TopGolf Swing Suite: At the Great Wolf Lodge where we stayed, they boasted The Yards: A TopGolf Swing Suite. We didn’t make reservations in time to try it out ourselves but loved this option when we visited the Four Seasons St. Louis last year. It is fantastic for teens. Keep in mind that reservations are required and there is an additional fee. 

The resort environment at Great Wolf Lodge can give teenagers and older kids freedom, but with safety restrictions, so parents can relax while the kids explore. Parents should plan time for the activities but also allow time just for water park fun. Resist the urge to pack every moment.

Is Great Wolf Lodge worth it for families?

Quick answer: yes. You can have celebratory fun and games without traveling so far from home. With 20+ locations throughout the United States, there is probably a location within a few hours of you. The Points Guy listed Great Wolf as one of the top hotels with water parks in the country. And I agree! We discovered this brand over 10 years ago, and it has been our go-to for a quick family getaway ever since. We have made so many memories at Great Wolf Lodge!

Is it worth the money for a weekend trip to Great Wolf Lodge?

Yes, in many cases, absolutely, it is worth a weekend trip to Great Wolf Lodge. If you’re going as a family, especially a larger one, the value can be outstanding. Consider this: you get lodging + water-park access + many included activities all in one location. The “one stop” convenience saves on travel, meals out, separate admissions, etc. For a weekend getaway (arrive Friday, depart Sunday)—the cost model works, and it is even a better value if you book mid-week or off-peak.

Is Great Wolf Lodge worth the cost for just one night?

Yes! I think it is definitely worth it, even if you just have one night to stay at Great Wolf Lodge. If the rate is reasonable (like our under-$250/night Wolf Den), and you arrive early and depart late (getting full use of the waterpark), then yes, you can get great value. However, if you book a standard room at peak rate, and/or arrive late or leave early, many of the activities may be rushed, and you might feel you’re paying more for less time. One-night stays can work for families who maximize the time. Just plan carefully.

Is Great Wolf Lodge worth it for teens and older kids?

Absolutely, if you pick the right room, budget, and activity bundle, teen and older kids will have a ball. In our case, the teens enjoyed independence with their wristbands (which also function as room key and food charge), and access to the arcade and dry-activities post-waterpark. They had fun outside of the slide after slide water park fun. And because they could roam safely on the property, we as parents got some downtime too. With teens, the value shifts to a resort-like experience everyone can enjoy.

Is Great Wolf Lodge worth the money during the off-season or on weekdays?

Yes! Visiting Great Wolf Lodge off-peak is one of the best value zones with lower rates and lighter crowds. Activities may be less crowded during the off-season. Booking off-peak or weekdays means you stretch the dollar further, get a more relaxed experience, and potentially more “bang for buck.” So yes—off-season/weekday stays may deliver the best value of all at Great Wolf Lodge.

Is the food at Great Wolf Lodge expensive or worth it?

The food is resort-style, so expect premiums compared to your local fast-casual restaurant. However, the convenience factor (not having to leave the property) is part of the value. You can mitigate cost by making early reservations (to avoid pricey last-minute items), sharing plates (we shared chicken fingers), and timing meals smartly. 

If you’re staying for multiple nights, the food cost may feel steeper, but in the context of a full resort stay, the meals feel worth it because they are part of the overall experience. For larger families, ordering platters or shareable options helps. In short: Yes, food is “resort priced,” but with planning, it remains worth it, especially when you compare it to paying separate admission + travel + external meals elsewhere.

 1. Start with a theme.

You can make yourself go crazy trying to do every spooky thing you’ve ever seen. Just narrow it down, pick one Halloween theme, and play it up throughout your space. Will it be ghastly ghouls? Spooky spiders? You decide!

 2. Save money by recycling old items. 

After you’ve picked your theme, there’s no need to go out and spend hundreds of dollars to bring it to life. Try repurposing items you already have (or can find in a secondhand store) with spray paint to make them fun and festive. Upcycling items can help them be seen in a whole new light with just a little creativity. Plus, it is cheap!

 3. Use decorations to create an overall Halloween aesthetic. 

One unique trick is to try to hang things from the ceiling to create dimension in a room. It can make things extra scary.

 4. Go minimal.

You don’t have to make your house look like a Halloween fairy threw up on it. Sometimes, minimal effects can be just as spooktacular, if done correctly. Stop stressing yourself out and just keep it simple.

5. Let someone else do the work.

DIY doesn’t have to mean you do everything. Use balloons or other party accessories to easily decorate your space. Pumpkins work great too. And you don’t even have to carve them if you don’t want to!

My idea of easy Halloween crafts includes items I already have around the house and can be done in the 20 minutes I have while the chicken nuggets bake. Also, no glitter. ever, ever! The best ones work for kids of all ages, don’t really need parental supervision, and make super cute decorations. Check out some of my favorite easy Halloween crafts both you and your kids will adore.

While you are busy getting your crafting on, be sure to have plenty of food and drinks on hand. Juice boxes, cups with lids, and snacks like popcorn, crackers or cut-up fruit are typically great for all ages.

1. Spooky Ghosts

2. DIY Monster Mash Up

This Halloween, make some “monsterpieces” with your kids! This is one of those easy Halloween crafts that helps to let your creative juices flow.  These little creatures will surely kick this year’s spookiness up a notch.  There’s so much you can do with these not-so-scary little guys. You can use them as a spooktacular Halloween display around the house or give them as a “treat” to teachers, grandma, neighbors or friends.  You can even glue a popsicle stick to the bottom of your monster and turn it into a puppet! Puppet show, anyone?

3. Vampire Bats

The hardest part of this craft is finding the perfect rocks. The truth, though, is that it isn’t that hard! After you’ve finished painting them, set them up around the house. Stage a Broadway “rock” show, or use them like puppets. How you use your little monsters is up to your little one! These colorful little pals will brighten your day and provide quality time spent crafting with your kids. I added mine to the border around my garden and smile whenever I see them.

Updated for summer 2025! These Six Flags Over Georgia tips will help anyone looking for some screen-free fun this summer. My family absolutely loves visiting and it is always on my kids’ “to do” list each summer break. With teens and pre-teens it is one of a few places that all 4 of them (and my husband and I) like to go together.

From Hurricane Harbor Water Park to Batman, there are tons of things to see and do at Six Flags Over Georgia. Don’t let that stress you out, though! Taking kids to a theme park can be overwhelming, especially if you’re outnumbered, but you can do it! Here are some Six Flags Over Georgia tips to help you make the most out of your visit to this theme park or ANY theme park this summer!

13 Six Flags Over Georgia Tips For Families

1. Take Advantage of the extra events and upgraded experiences.

Six Flags Over Georgia has created fun events and add-on activities that can make your trip extra special. For summer 2025, guests can immerse themselves in a kaleidoscope of color during the all-new Summerbration. This trendy event will run through July 29, 2025, and feature mouth-watering treats, beat-the-heat beverages, and live entertainment.

I highly recommend upgrading your experience by purchasing VIP Fireworks Party admission during the Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration. Last year, the VIP package featured after-hours access to Hurricane Harbor Atlanta (practically no crowds), an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring classic summertime eats and unlimited sodas, and premium viewing of the fireworks finale. It was my favorite way to view fireworks in Atlanta! Guests can get more information on events like this when it is available at sixflags.com/overgeorgia. 

 2. Call ahead.

Yes. I said, “Call.” To make sure you can do the activities you want to do most, call ahead for park information, show schedules and see if there are any ride closures before you visit. You can also get additional information on special events, concerts, and general park information at (770) 948-9290. They do have an app, but I have found the information handy, but not always up-to-the-minute.

 3. Visit when it’s less crowded.

Plan to visit when attendance is lightest. The best time to visit is weekdays during the summer and any regular operating day during the months of April, May, June, and September. We went recently after an afternoon rainstorm, and the park was just about empty.

 4. Prepare for the weather.

You may want to bring a sweater or wrap for cool evenings or if damp clothes are going to give you a chill. A small umbrella is also a great thing to pack. It can be used as a sunshade even if it doesn’t rain. One of my best Six Flags Over Georgia tips is to encourage visitors to get a locker! They have plenty of lockers, so you don’t have to carry everything around all day.

 5. Plan for the unexpected.

Even with big kids, or kids who think they are big kids, things can happen. Be sure to designate a meeting place and time in case your family becomes separated. Make sure older kids have fully charged cell phones before heading off on their own. Also, encourage them to make good decisions and be good people.

 6. Bring a stroller for anyone under 5.

If you have a child younger than five, you will need a stroller. You can bring your own or rent one from the Stroller Rental area. Strollers are provided on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early.

 7. Plan ahead.

One of the easiest Six Flags Over Georgia tips is to review the park map to familiarize yourself with the park’s layout.  So many people skip this step, and it will cost them time trying to figure out where everything is. Also, you can use the app to check out the show schedule. You can always stop by Guest Relations to make sure you have the most updated information. Shows are often a big draw, so arrive early if you want a good seat.

8. Know when to ride the top roller coasters.

Start your day at the attractions farthest from the main entrance, the ones at the back of the park. To avoid long waits, visit your favorite rides (and the ones that are probably everyone’s favorites, too) when the park first opens or after 5 pm when fewer guests are in the park.

 9. Eat smart.

To save time, stress, and aggravation, eat at non-traditional lunch and dinner hours. You can also pack a cooler in your car and take a walk out to the parking lot to save big money. You do give up convenience and time in the park, though. Another option is to use the app to order your food and have it ready when you walk up. You are not allowed to bring food or drinks into the park.

 10. Look for discounts.

Don’t pay full price and waste time standing in lines at the front gates. Take advantage of the best discounts by checking online and buying tickets before you come. Think you’ll come more than once this year? A season pass might be for you. Check online for their best deals! If you are looking for extra financing in a pinch, you could consider short-term loan lenders to make a memorable event possible.

 11. Use the Baby Swap process if needed.

Don’t let a little one stop you from riding with your big kids. When you get on the ride, leave the young one with your spouse or riding partner, and then swap places when you get off.

 12. Stay hydrated.

It’s hot out here on these theme park streets! Drink fluids throughout the day to stay hydrated. Drink water even before you feel thirsty. Experts say if you are thirsty, you are probably already dehydrated. Water is readily available throughout the park. While you cannot bring filled water bottles into the park, you can bring empty ones and refill them as needed. You can buy souvenir cups allowing unlimited refills, but they can get pricey unless you use them a lot. It costs $34.99 to buy one cup. A 16-ounce soda costs $6.

 13. Wear sunscreen.

Be sure to put it on before you arrive at the park and reapply it throughout the day. In case you forget to bring some, you can buy it in several shops at Six Flags Over Georgia.
