Easy Slow Cooker Mexican Chicken Soup

Ingredients

• 1 can corn, drained
• 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
• 1 can diced tomatoes (undrained)
• 2 cups cooked white rice
• 1 to 1½ lbs cooked shredded chicken
• 1 packet taco seasoning
• 1 carton chicken stock
• To serve: sour cream, shredded cheese, and cornbread

Instructions

• Add the corn, black beans, diced tomatoes, rice, shredded chicken, and taco seasoning to your slow cooker.
• Pour in the chicken stock and stir well.
• Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or high for 1 to 2 hours.
• Ladle into bowls and top with sour cream and shredded cheese. Serve with warm cornbread.

• Use what you’ve got. Leftover veggies, a can of green chiles, a handful of spinach, or a diced bell pepper all work great with this recipe.

I have played sports my whole life, and that means I have tried out for many, many teams. Most of them I made. Some of them, like the Olympic Team for the 1996 Olympics, I didn’t. All those tryouts have made me a better coach now and a better parent of athletes.

I succeeded even though I wasn’t the tallest, fastest, strongest, most skilled, or best player on the court. I simply worked harder than anyone else. Somehow, I learned how to master the “soft” skills of sports and used them to my advantage. Sports have been a constant in my life and have taught me so much about resiliency. And it has been my joy and privilege to watch my kids play a multitude of sports.

I have coached middle school girls’ basketball and AAU basketball teams, and I am the director of a church-based basketball league. I have been through many tryouts and player evaluations. And as a moI’m watching my kids try out for various sports teams, including basketball. I want to pass on to them and to you what I learned as a player, coach, and mom to give them the best chance of success in tryouts. Remember, these tryout tips are for your kids…as well as for you!

10 Tryout Tips To Help Kids Make The Team

1. Be in good shape.

If your child can’t make it up and down the floor, court, or field, they are at a disadvantage. Kids don’t have to be able to run a sub-6 minute mile, but they should take some time to get ready for the upcoming season. Preparation is the key to success! Take advantage of the cooler weather this time of year to get some fun and exercise in.

2. Be aware of body language.

One of the easiest tryout tips I have for kids is to make it look like they want to be there. Smile. Make eye contact. Have fun. They shouldn’t let their shoulders slump or (God forbid) roll their eyes. Kids should show their coaches they are confident and coachable.

3. Be a good teammate.

Cheer for others. Give high fives. Compliment those around on the court for doing well. Encourage those having a harder time. Kids should be the kind of teammate they want others to be. Coaches will see you!

4. Be a “try hard”.

I hate this phrase because my kids seem to think that being a “try hard” is a bad thing. Well, guess what? “Try hards” make the team. “Try hards” get playing time. And the one you want the most: “Try hards” get recruited to play sports in college. Go hard. Always. When the coach says “run”, then your child should sprint. Never jog to a spot when you can run. And never walk if you can help it. They should make sure they are never the last one to finish a drill, return after a water break, or run laps.

5. Be loud.

When you are trying out for a team, that is not the time to be quiet. Be confident and loud. When talking to coaches, tell your kids to speak up. The coaches want to hear your child’s voice!

6. Be confident.

It can be difficult, but kids should not get down on themselves after one missed shot. Or even twenty missed shots. Keep trying and working hard. The key about tryout is that it really isn’t about how well you perform; it’s about how well you fit on the team. Do everything you can to show you are a good fit.

7. Be positive.

Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right.” I believe that statement and repeat it often. Tell your kids to believe in themselves and have confidence in their skills. Don’t let negativity get you down.

8. Be willing to do the “little things”.

Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens once said: “When considering the consequences of not doing the little things, you realize there are no little things.” Here are some things kids can do when trying out for a basketball team. These “little things” are some of the most important tryout tips I can pass on.

• Take a charge.
• Communicate loud
• Dive for a loose ball
• Listen with your eyes
• Battle hard for rebounds
• Sprint the floor on every possession
• Focus on your strengths
• Don’t get distracted

9. Be humble.

Tryouts aren’t the time for showboating. Good coaches don’t want to see all the silly things kids see NBA stars do. They want to see basketball basics…shooting, passing, dribbling. And they want to see them done well.

10. Be grateful.

Thanking your coaches after every practice is a good habit for athletes and a great life skill for everyone. Your coaches will appreciate it, and it gives them a positive final impression of you. Kids should look their coaches in the eye, say their name, and say thank you. Let the coach know you are serious. And do it every time. This would be a good time to ask for feedback from coaches, too.

Parents, these tryout tips can give your kids the best shot at making the team. But there is no guarantee they will make it. I encourage you to give them a safe place to fail (or succeed) and help them try things even if they might come up short. Good luck!

At the She Buys Cars winter driving event, I got to spend three days immersed in the newest, latest, and definitely greatest cars on the market and find out for myself if the Porsche Driving Experience is worth it. I was also able to connect with some of my favorite writers, network with the car brands’ big wigs, and luxuriate in the glory that is the Porsche Experience Center. It was awesome.

While driving around the awe-inspiring track on the Southside of Atlanta, I realized there is a definite category of drivers: moms who drive like a boss. Let me explain.

4 Ways Moms Can Drive Like a Boss

1. We drive fast, safely.

The moms who drive like a boss do so safely. But we go fast. This means that we have places to go, people to meet, and carpool lines to make. We may drive fast at times, even in cars that aren’t meant to go fast (ahem…my minivan), but we do so SAFELY. We don’t run red lights. We stop when someone’s in the crosswalk. But we get where we are going when we need to be there.

2. We are kind.

I’m sure there is someone who will prove my theory wrong, but for the most part, moms who drive like a boss are kind drivers. They are the ones who let you in when you are trying to merge. They slow down when they see you pulled off to the side of the road. They smile and wave you through the intersection (if they have already collected their kids on time, that is). You (probably) won’t hear any four-letter words. Probably.

3. We are smart.

Moms who drive like a boss make smart choices when buying our cars. And yes, despite what you may think, women make most of the decisions when it comes to buying a car. We buy cars based on practicality. We think about if our double stroller can fit in the trunk or if three car seats can squeeze in the third row.

We plan for accidents before they happen by buying the safest car our budget allows. Some of us (myself included) may not know how much horsepower the car has or how long it takes to get from 0 to 60 mph, but we know how to position our mirrors to see all the kids AND traffic. We know the most efficient way to fold down those back seats to get two bikes in the back. We know a good car when we see one. This is one reason A Girls Guide to Cars exists!

4. We will cut (in on) you if necessary.

Don’t mistake our kindness for weakness. Please. Watching all these moms race through the Porsche course, you would have thought they were preparing for the Indy 500. They want to win! Even if all they are winning is bragging rights. Off the course, if you come too close to hitting one of our kids or you’re driving while texting or doing something else dangerous, moms are the last ones you want to see. We will cut in on you, slow you down, and call 911 on our hands-free speaker at the same time. Watch out for moms!

Is the Porsche Driving Experience Worth It? Here’s More Information

What do you do at the Porsche Experience Center? A better question is: What don’t you do? We were able to test out the Driver Development at the Porsche Experience Center. This track consists of six driving modules explained below. We also had time to spend in the simulator lab. Both are really so fun!

Driver Development Track

1. Handling Circuit

A 1.6-mile handling course designed to mimic winding country road with a number of corners and undulations. Moms who drive like a boss will learn how to choose the right path when negotiating the curves and proper accelerating and braking techniques.

2. Kick Plate

Want to know what to do when you find yourself in a skid or spinning out on black ice? This mimics sliding that might occur during inclement weather conditions. Get used to winter driving in a safe place!

3. Off-Road Course

Features 21 different off-road obstacles, including a crazy high hill you think your Porsche will never be able to climb. There’s also a 45-degree vertical descent challenge to demonstrate the capabilities of a Porsche Cayenne. It’s pretty amazing.

4. Dynamics Area

Let your speed demon out! Moms who drive like a boss can test the speed, agility, and lane-change performance on a large asphalt pad. This lets you simulate unique maneuvers you may encounter during your daily driving.

5. Low-Friction Circle

This helps you learn to maneuver a Porsche vehicle on a low-friction track with a uniform slope and a polished concrete surface.

6. Low-Friction Handling

This is similar to the above track, as it also is a polished concrete surface, but it also introduces a series of tight curves and other fun additions. The one-to-one driver-to-instructor ratio means you get to try everything yourself with awesome tips along the way.

Porsche Driving Simulator Lab

The Porsche Driving Simulator Lab is a cost-effective introduction to driving and racing. The simulators actually feel like the real thing. And it’s a great way to involve the whole family (provided everyone is 8 years old or older). You get the driver training and coaching as well as the safety elements you learn on the real track. Plus, did I say it was fun?! It provides a great entertainment option for those simply seeking something different. Here’s a little more info on the Simulator Lab:

• Brings to life the visual thrill of driving on top-level racetracks around the world.
• Intentionally designed to replicate characteristics of famous circuits.

Updated for summer 2026! These Six Flags Over Georgia tips will help anyone looking for some screen-free fun this summer. My family absolutely loves visiting and it is always on my kids’ “to do” list each summer break. With 4 teens it is one of a few places that all 4 of them (and my husband and I) like to go together.

From Hurricane Harbor Water Park to Batman, there are tons of things to see and do at Six Flags Over Georgia. Don’t let that stress you out, though! Taking kids to a theme park can be overwhelming, especially if you’re outnumbered, but you can do it! Here are some Six Flags Over Georgia tips to help you make the most out of your visit to this theme park or ANY theme park this summer!

13 Six Flags Over Georgia Tips For Families

1. Take Advantage of the extra events and upgraded experiences.

Six Flags Over Georgia has created fun events and add-on activities that can make your trip extra special. For summer 2026, check out the special events:

1. Celebrate America’s 250th birthday, July 1-10
2. DC Villians and Heroes Fest, July 11 – August 2 (select days)
3. Star Spangled Nights, July 3-5 (Check out all 4th of July festivities at Six Flags Over Georgia here.)

I highly recommend upgrading your experience by purchasing VIP Fireworks Party admission during the Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration. Last year, the VIP package featured after-hours access to Hurricane Harbor Atlanta (practically no crowds), an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring classic summertime eats and unlimited sodas, and premium viewing of the fireworks finale. It was my favorite way to view fireworks in Atlanta! Guests can get more information on events like this when it is available at sixflags.com/overgeorgia. 

 2. Call ahead.

Yes. I said, “Call.” To make sure you can do the activities you want to do most, call ahead for park information, show schedules and see if there are any ride closures before you visit. You can also get additional information on special events, concerts, and general park information at (770) 948-9290. They do have an app, and I have found the information handy, though not always up to the minute.

 3. Visit when it’s less crowded.

Plan to visit when attendance is lightest. The best time to visit is on weekdays during the summer and on any regular operating day in April, May, June, or September. We went recently after an afternoon rainstorm, and the park was just about empty.

 4. Prepare for the weather.

You may want to bring a sweater or wrap for cool evenings or if damp clothes are going to give you a chill. A small umbrella is also a great thing to pack. It can be used as a sunshade even if it doesn’t rain. One of my best Six Flags Over Georgia tips is to encourage visitors to get a locker! They have plenty of lockers, so you don’t have to carry everything around all day.

 5. Plan for the unexpected.

Even with big kids, or kids who think they are big kids, things can happen. Be sure to designate a meeting place and time in case your family becomes separated. Make sure older kids have fully charged cell phones before heading off on their own. Also, encourage them to make good decisions and be good people.

 6. Bring a stroller for anyone under 5.

If you have a child younger than five, you will need a stroller. You can bring your own or rent one from the Stroller Rental area. Strollers are provided on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early.

 7. Plan ahead.

One of the easiest Six Flags Over Georgia tips is to review the park map to familiarize yourself with the park’s layout.  So many people skip this step, and it will cost them time trying to figure out where everything is. You can also use the app to check out the show schedule. You can always stop by Guest Relations to make sure you have the most up-to-date information. Shows are often a big draw, so arrive early if you want a good seat.

8. Know when to ride the top roller coasters.

Start your day at the attractions farthest from the main entrance, the ones at the back of the park. To avoid long waits, visit your favorite rides (and the ones that are probably everyone’s favorites, too) when the park first opens or after 5 pm when fewer guests are in the park.

 9. Eat smart.

To save time, stress, and aggravation, eat at non-traditional lunch and dinner hours. You can also pack a cooler in your car and take a walk out to the parking lot to save big money. You do give up convenience and time in the park, though. Another option is to use the app to order your food and have it ready when you walk up. You are not allowed to bring food or drinks into the park. Check out the new Georgia Sandwhich Company. It features a full outdoor bar and the sandwiches are GIANT!

 10. Look for discounts.

If you have teenagers, you know how rare it is to find an activity everyone actually wants to do. With four teens in my house, getting unanimous excitement about anything feels like winning the lottery. But every single summer, there’s one place that does it without fail: Six Flags Over Georgia. We visited recently, and spending time here has become one of those traditions I genuinely look forward to all year.

We’re already planning to go back a few more times before summer ends, and I wanted to share why this park has earned such a permanent spot in our family’s summer rotation.

The One Place All Four of My Teenagers Actually Want to Go

Let’s be real, coordinating plans with four teenagers is basically a part-time job. Someone always has other plans, a friend group to keep up with, or a sports practice. Six Flags is the exception. Every time I bring up a trip, I get an actual “yes” from all of them, no convincing required.
I think it’s because there’s truly something for everyone here.

A couple of kids head straight for the big coasters, some gravitate toward the water park, and somehow we all end up back together for snacks, a show, or one more ride before we leave. It’s rare to find a place that works for younger kids, teenagers, and parents all at once, but this park manages it every time.

What To Expect on the 4th of July at Six Flags Over Georgia

Star-Spangled Nights presented by M&M’S will take place July 3 – 5. The park celebrates the 4^th of July with a stunning fireworks display at 9:30 p.m., the perfect finale to an epic summer day.

On July 4 and 5, Guests can upgrade their experience with a VIP Fireworks Party in Hurricane Harbor Atlanta, which includes after-hours water park access, a summertime buffet, premium fireworks viewing and live entertainment. VIP Fireworks Party tickets are available now. We did this one year and it was an absolute blast. And honestly, it was a STEAL when you factor in meals for everyone!

I’ll admit it: the food and drinks are a major part of why my kids love this park so much. My son Cole visited the new Georgia Sandwich Company and spent more time than he thought he would, finishing SEVERAL plates of food. He raved about this Meatball Sub! And for the moms and dads, this restaurant has a full bar. A few new items I can’t wait to try:

• Patriotic Vanilla Layer Cake: A layered vanilla cake with sprinkles that visitors have rated as one of the best desserts at any theme park.
• All-American Funnel Cake: A loaded funnel cake topped with vanilla ice cream. Word to the wise, buy 2!
• Liberty Bell Apple Pie Shake: A specialty shake layered with syrup, topped with whipped cream and a mini apple pie skewer. This one’s mine. I don’t share it.
• Americana Colada Frozen Cocktail (21+ only): A refreshing pina colada layered with rum, blue curacao and strawberry puree in a collectible stars-and-stripes 20 oz. pilsner glass.
• The All-American: Sprite, strawberry-popping boba, and blue curacao syrup, served in a souvenir Americana cup with a strawberry garnish.
• The Tavern Cherry: Coca-Cola, cherry and cold foam served in a souvenir Americana cup with a cherry garnish.

6 Honest Tips for a 4th of July at Six Flags Over Georgia

1. Take Your Time. Yes, you want to see and do everything, but don’t try to exhaust everyone before lunch.
2. Get there early. Crowds will thicken as the day goes on. Getting there when it opens (check the website) will help you get a few rides in while others are still looking for their parking spots.
3. Let the teens split off and do their own thing for a bit. Let them go. Everyone regroups happier.
4. Consider a season pass. If you’re visiting more than twice a summer, like we do, consider a season pass before buying single-day tickets. It might really save you some bank.
5. Save room for snacks. You’ll want to try more than one.
6. Be prepared for the heat. Buy a refillable bottle to stay hydrated or bring an EMPTY water bottle. Seek out the shade when you can and recharge in some air-conditioning if you get too hot.

Why We Keep Going Back Each Summer

A few reasons this has become an every-summer, multi-trip kind of thing for us:

• It’s genuinely affordable for repeat visits. Season passes and memberships start around $7 a month, which makes sense for a family that goes more than once or twice. With six of us, the math works out fast.
• You can buy a refillable cup. It is a small thing, but it makes a big difference when you’re keeping four teenagers hydrated all day. Plus, have you been in Atlanta in the summer? It’s not called Hotlanta for nothing!
• There’s always something a little different. Between seasonal events, rotating entertainment, and new food offerings, going back a few times in one summer never feels repetitive.

Finding a place that genuinely excites four teenagers — at the same time, about the same activity — feels like a small miracle some days. Fourth of July is a Great Time to Mix a Little History In Too

One thing that surprised me is how much character this park has beyond the modern coasters. It’s a nice mix — my teens get their adrenaline fix on the newer rides, and I get a little nostalgic kick out of the classics. A few of the rides are genuinely historic:

• A carousel from 1908, originally built for a Chicago park, before making its way here in 1972. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
• The Dahlonega Mine Train has been running since the park’s opening in 1967.
• The Great American Scream Machine, a wooden coaster from 1973 that’s still one of our family favorites.
