Find Out What a Typical Day is Like at School

As the end of the school year nears, ask or email the teacher(s) if they would please send you a detailed schedule of what each typical school day is like. This includes the time they eat breakfast and lunch, what their favorite food choices were, their preferred activities, etc. Kids tend to do different things in different settings, and it would be a great idea to try to keep some level of continuity during the summer season if possible. However, it will also help to know of any new interests or skills your child developed during the school year that you can incorporate into your home routines and help to reinforce those learned skills at home.

Become an Interest and Skills Detective

Our kids take interest in new and different things, I know that when it comes to autism, we may have misconceptions about our children wanting the same things, and this is true for many kids.  However, just like other kids without disabilities, they grow tired of the same toys, and sometimes they get bored of watching the same old shows – even though they request it. If you’ve noticed that your son or daughter asks for a particular show and then he or she pops up looking for your attention within minutes of it starting – you know they’re bored of watching it. If they do this often while the “preferred show or movie” is playing, they’re no longer interested in it.  They may not be able to communicate this yet, but may still crave it for self-regulation. This especially happens with kids with autism. Movies, routines, toys and other things they’ve seen or played with repeatedly over the years may have become familiar, comfortable and self-regulating. However, it doesn’t mean they still love it. This has been a huge lesson for me this year with my son Richie who has autism. I had to become an interest and skills detective at the start of the summer! Using pictures and “Yes” and “No” cards helped us to learn that Richie enjoys being read to on subjects that interest him.  Richie is interested in all things Military! We are now working on finding movies that are age appropriate and not too violent that he can watch and enjoy. Richie also loves to bake. He enjoys baking cookies, cakes and muffins. He also loves to help me cook. I let him stir, mix and add ingredients whenever possible. Richie’s favorite thing to do is use the hand mixer, that and eating his masterful creation! Baking has become one of Richie’s favorite things to do during the day!

Over the years, we have tried enrolling Richie into sports (Baseball, Soccer, Bowling, etc.) and we learned quickly when he wasn’t interested in participating. We learned that it’s so important to come together as a family to brainstorm ideas on interests and activities. I’m always proud of the ideas that come from our family meetings – you’d be surprised how insightful and creative siblings can be!

Based on your child’s interest, you may want to consider trying projects like:

• Baking cake and food mixes with easy to follow instructions. For added fun, take pictures of your child cooking and create your own step-by-step recipe cookbook together!
• Finger painting, Coloring and Tracing books, and Water Coloring books.
• Designing a Mug, Baseball Cap, or Decorating a Bird House!

What Sensory Play does your Child Enjoy?

Does your child have specific sensory needs? This could include activities that involve the need to be moving, jumping, swinging. Maybe it means he or she likes visually stimulating toys that light up, or maybe they enjoy touching squishy things like putty. I like to make sure I have a variety of things on hand that gives Richie the sensory input he needs through out the day. Keep in mind that over time, sensory needs change for our kids too. I make sure to review our inventory of toys and gadgets every year. For example, Richie no longer cares for the visual stimulation that spinners, rainmakers, or other visual handheld toys provides. He’s seventeen year’s old, so these days he’s just getting into handheld video games, the hand-eye coordination is still something he’s working on. We have a big trampoline outside, but my boys have kind of outgrown it now that they’re in their teens. My almost two-year old granddaughter now loves to climb in it to play catch with us.

I bought Richie an indoor/outdoor swing to help fulfill his need for vestibular input. He uses it everyday and loves it! Outside hammocks are also a great idea!

Assign Your Child Household Chores

Too often special needs children are not taught or given household chores. I think all kids should have daily tasks or chores that only they are responsible for getting done. I think it makes them feel included in daily family routines and it makes them feel purposeful. When Richie was younger, we started with little things like taking out the trash or putting clothes in the washer. When he mastered a task, we worked on expanding it. For example, with the laundry, we moved on to teaching him to move clothes from the washer to the dryer and from the dryer to the laundry basket for folding. Now, we’re to the point where he puts his clothes in his drawers and hangs shirts in the closet – though we are still working on these steps, he is well on his way to doing it independently. A simple chore or task can gradually grow with complexity over time, and before you know it, your child has a new skill that can continue to be polished over the years. Not only are they keeping busy, they’re contributing to household routines just like everyone else! Of course, not all chores are for all special need’s children. However, we can always find things for all children to do based on their abilities. Examples of chores Richie started with include:

Recycling bottles and cans – we are now including rinsing them as an additional step before placing them in the bin.

Taking out the garbage – we are working on getting him to do this without prompts daily.

Laundry – we are now working on getting Richie to sort the clothes by colors.

Putting away Forks and Spoons – Richie has mastered sorting and putting away utensils in the drawer.

Setting the table for meals and clearing the table after meals.

Create a Visual Schedule                

I’m working from home this summer and keeping my son Richie, who is seventeen and has autism, busy and entertained throughout the day is tough.  Richie struggles with communicating effectively with us and if he’s bored and not engaged, he’s going to be craving my attention – a lot! It’s important for me to make sure he knows what is expected of him throughout the day. Children and teens crave structure and it’s so important that they understand what is expected of them as well as providing activities they find interesting that they can choose from.   I created a visual schedule board that lists Richie’s chores with breaks for activities he can choose to do. These break activities will alternate between preferred (watching tv, playing video games, using devices, etc.) and non-preferred activities (learning; spelling, reading, etc.).  I have Richie’s visual schedule posted in the kitchen where he can count on seeing it daily. It’s set up with a long activity list with pictures of chores Richie does throughout the day and red squares that indicate a break for a preferred or non-preferred activity. These pictures are on the side and they’re available for him to choose from.

Explain to Your Child when Your Attention will be Available

One of the most difficult things to teach to children with special needs is the concept of time. I have had to learn how to simplify my narration of my availability to Richie, so he grasps the concept and doesn’t become frustrated with me. This is especially needed if I’m going to be on the phone or unavailable for a certain period of time. This has worked for me, but it is a work in progress. I might say something like, “Richie, I’m on a phone call for an hour. I’ll be available at 5 pm (I might point to the clock and show him). I’m going to set the timer for one hour and that’s when I’ll come and talk to you. That’s when I set the visual timer letting him see when I’ll become available.

Using a visual timer also helps with illustrating how much longer he’ll have to wait before he can expect my attention.

First – Then boards work well to help with explaining when I’ll be available to give him my full attention.

Create a Sensory or Activity Bin

I would also create a sensory or activity bin with his or her favorite items, this could include hand-held visuals, iPod, fidget toys, MP3 player, etc.  If there is a preferred item that you can designate as something that can be given to your child only for those moments you need to participate on a lengthy phone call, I would keep that one item in a separate place. This could be an MP3 player, an old handheld video game or iPod, etc. It’s also helpful to use the bin for when there’s a task you need to get done and need your child to engage in independent play.

Stay in the “Know” of What’s Going on in Your Community

You already know about your child’s interests and what he or she can tolerate when it comes to social events. Maybe you’re like me and you’re still learning about his or her interests and doing things that make them happy. When it comes to getting our kids involved in community events, the following resources are great to have on hand:

Nathaniel’s Hope Buddy Break Program – Buddy Break is a FREE Parents’ Day Out/respite program where kids with all types of special needs (VIP kids) have FUN while their parents get a BREAK. At Buddy Break, VIP kids and their siblings make new friends, play games, do crafts, hear children’s stories, enjoy music, and more! Meanwhile, parents get a break from their ongoing care-giving responsibilities, usually for three hours on a Friday night or Saturday morning. Buddy Break locations can be found nationwide and is open to all.

In Central Florida, an option is to visit Hope International Church Buddy Break. Our very own Joscelyn is the Director for that location. Check them out on Facebook too.

Sensory Friendly Movies – It was a parent who sparked the idea for AMC’s Sensory Friendly Movies. As a result of AMC and Autism Society of America’s brilliant collaboration, there are sensory friendly movies twice a month at AMC theaters nationwide. Other theaters have followed their innovative lead and are also featuring sensory friendly movies monthly. Find more information about sensory friendly movies in your neighborhood by clicking: HERE

CARD – The Center for Autism and Relevant Disorders has a great calendar of sensory friendly events throughout the month. Visit your local CARD events page!

In Central Florida, The University of Central Florida Center for Autism and Related Disabilities provides services within the geographical region that includes Orange, Lake, Osceola, Sumter, Brevard, Volusia, and Seminole Counties. Visit their website at https://cfl.ucf-card.org

HUG – Super cool website that captures the local recreational events that are meant for individuals with disabilities of all ages.

Social Media – You can search for events on sites like Facebook. Facebook has special needs groups of all kinds, some are disability specific (Autism, Down Syndrome, etc.) or non-disability specific. You can look for groups in your local vicinity or join nationwide ones for information and support. Either way, you might find out about local events, social activities, or other fun stuff going on in your neighborhood. You can also search Facebook for events using the term “disability friendly or sensory friendly” when looking for fun things to do. Meetup is another great resource for identifying any special needs groups that organize community events or social activities for kids with autism or other disabilities.

Although the summer season brings changes in routines that may cause some challenges in families of children with autism, helping our kids adapt to these changes by being prepared will help the transition go smoothly. Planning ahead with a daily schedule of choices for activities that are fun, educational, and in the community can make the summer a fun and memorable one! This past weekend, I sat down with my kids and asked them to create a bucket list. They were thrilled that they were getting to choose what to do. They had so many ideas and I couldn’t write things down fast enough. I was surprised with many of the things they wanted to do. They want to go to amusement parks, swimming, and have breakfast for dinner! There’s camping, building forts and even collecting donations.

Tweens are a fun age group. They are old enough to go out and explore but still young enough to spend hours playing with sidewalk chalk. I remember learning so much at that age, especially in the summer! I hope I am able to go through at least 95% of this bucket list with them! Keep your kids busy and entertained by downloading this printable. Put it up on your fridge and go crossing things off as you go. You won’t believe how much fun this summer will be!

Tijuana Flats Looking for tastes a little more south of the border? Tijuana Flats offers one kid free all day on Sundays with each paid adult entree!

Chick-fil-A Kids eat free on Tuesdays between 5:30-7:30pm, with the purchase of an adult combo meal. This deal can be franchise specific and some locations will charge $0.99 per kids meal, so be sure to ask first.

With creative thinking, Mami of Multiples faces the three-month challenge of keeping her four boys,
from toddler to teen, active and learning.

It seems like the year just started, yet summer vacation is already here. As a parent, I try to balance the summer months between fun and learning for my children. It’s important to experience quality time together as a family, take a vacation, and relax. It’s equally important to participate in educational activities and programs to help prevent the loss of learning.

Also known as the summer slide, learning loss happens when children and adolescents don’t engage in educational activities over the summer. According to the U.S. Department of Education, studies have shown a notable trend of learning loss when young people aren’t involved in anything educational during summer break. We may hear more about it on National Summer Learning Day. The nationally recognized day is meant to spread awareness about the importance of summer learning to help close the achievement gap. It might need more than a single day to build awareness of something so crucial.

I have four boys to plan for each summer: a teen, elementary-aged identical twins, plus a baby. With such big age differences, I’m always searching for summer activities and programs that are educational, affordable, and fun. I check local libraries, school districts, and even local chambers of commerce for summer programs. In preparing for summer activities, I consider my kids’ interests and our family’s “must-dos” for the summer. And I’ve learned not to wait too long to make our summer plans!

Besides soaking up some sun on a pool or beach day, my boys enjoy day outings. Here are some summer learning ideas that I have found work for everyone in my family and may appeal to your kids, too.

Libraries

Nationwide, libraries have summer programs that are either free or low cost. Everything from summer reading lists to LEGO building contests, library summer programs are suitable for all age groups. For example, my teen can partake in a college prep online course, the twins can have fun with a storybook contest, and even the baby can be part of a “mommy and me” read-aloud playgroup – all under the same roof.

With long summer road trips and travel, having access to audiobooks is very helpful (especially when traveling with kids) and can assist with eliminating one more thing to pack. Museums

The unique exhibits, special interactive programs, and longer admission hours put museums and children’s museums high on the list for the summer. With interactive displays, especially at children’s museums, kids of all ages have the opportunity to be hands-on and learn on about science, history, art, technology, and various subjects. Many museums offer affordable day camps that focus on a particular theme like dinosaurs, space, or the rain forest. A few summers ago, our family visited the American Police Hall of Fame and Museum. The museum had historical law enforcement artifacts, many types of different police cars, a touch-and-feel kid’s corner, and a theater. The twins loved getting to climb into historical police cars, watching funny Sheriff the Dog cartoons in the children’s movie theaters, and dressing up as law enforcement officers and firemen in the kids’ corner. My teen was impressed with the historical law enforcement stories and real-life paraphernalia from notorious cases such as indicting Al Capone.

Children’s Theaters

In theaters across the country, award-winning plays and scripts are being performed not only by adults but by a cast of talented children, too. The twins recently saw The Adventure of Treasure Island and loved the play. It was fascinating for them to see characters they had read about perform scenes from the book in front of them. Theaters for young audiences often offer discounted or free performances during the summer where children can see their favorite books brought to life.

National, State, and Regional Parks

The vast open space is the perfect setting for a wide range of learning opportunities, from forestry to camping. Families can learn about trees, animals, wilderness, native plants, and geographic elements on guided nature walks or during summer camping specials. National parks also have free admission and entrance days throughout the year that you may want to take advantage of.  Use Every Kid in a Park Pass, kids get into national parks for free!

Petting Zoos and Pick-Your-Own Farms

As an urban family, an outing to a petting zoo is a great learning experience. The boys get to approach and touch various farm animals they don’t see on a daily basis. Also, lots of teaching opportunities present themselves when kids get to pick their own fruits and vegetables. Visit a pick-your-own farm and learn about agriculture and vegetation while having fun – and then bake a pie together that night with your pickings!

Zoos and Aquariums

Almost everyone enjoys learning and seeing wild animals and sea creatures. Zoos and aquariums have programs designed especially for families in the summer. I’ve seen day camps where kids learn about African wildlife, deep-sea animals, bird watching, dolphin feeding, and more.

Volunteering

Summer is an ideal time for children and teens to learn about giving back and do community-minded service. Helping others teaches and reinforces social and emotional learning skills and attitudes important to making thoughtful and empathetic decisions. Volunteer Match has a comprehensive list of opportunities that are age appropriate, including virtual options. My twins helped distribute food to those in need at a local food bank. My teen was an assistant sports coach at a youth summer camp for underprivileged children. Both experiences were incredible learning opportunities for the boys. They unconsciously practiced social and math skills and got physical workouts. Just as important, it made them more appreciative of what they have and made them feel good about being able to help others. They want to volunteer again this summer.

School Summer Programs

Saying the words summer and school together may strike fear and dread in children’s hearts, but actually many school districts offer various summer programs that students might find entertaining – even as they continue to learn. Math and science clubs, music and dance classes, fun day trips, and day camps where children receive one-on-one tutoring are usually free or a minimal fee for families living within the school’s zoning boundaries. Ask your child’s school or neighboring school districts for a list of summer options.

At-Home Activities

Looking for an activity to do at home? Many arts and crafts projects can be found online and created using items already found at home. Summer Ideas 

See 10 easy healthy and fun summer activities.

Create DIY scavenger hunts or “survivor” style challenges for the kids. Hide stuff around the house and outside in the yard.  Create a map that they need to follow or clues they need to figure out. If you do this once a month, the first to figure out the challenge can a reward like a “no chores for the day” card. Kids enjoy the challenge since they get out of doing chores and are off their tablets.

As simple as a seven ingredient recipe may sound, it is a tedious recipe that takes patience; but, that’s what made it so memorable because everyone was gathered around the table helping while visiting. There are so many funny stories about our family making these cookies each year, that they all make me laugh just recalling them.

In order to understand why this recipe brings me so much joy and laughter you must first understand the tediousness part the recipe. First you must cream 2 cups of room temperature butter, 3/4 cup of sugar and 1 teaspoon of salt. Then you add 6 teaspoons of vanilla, 4 cups of Wondra flour and 4 cups of chopped pecans. And there you have your dough. Sound simple enough? Well it is not very sticky and that brings me to tedious part; number one; you then roll the dough into small balls similar to the size of a donut hole, grape or gum drop, which takes FOREVER (but, trust me, is so worth it). Then bake them at 250 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes. IMMEDIATELY after they come out of the oven (and your kitchen is smelling like the best cookie scented candle money can buy) roll each individual cookie in a bowl full of sifted powdered sugar (4 cups to be exact). This is tedious and tricky part number two because they are extremely delicate and crumble easily, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So now that you understand how to make them, on with a story or two! We used to live in Saint Louis, Missouri and my grandparents had retired to St. Pete Beach, Florida. They would come back home for the holidays about a week before Christmas and stay at our house. Once my sister and I were old enough to help we gathered around the table chatting and assisting with the baking. Mom and Grandma would be reminiscing and always tell the same story about how back in the day when Grandma was baking these and my mom was just a kid, Papa would come into the kitchen and offer to help make things go a little faster. He would take a huge handful of dough, roll it into a ball the size of a SOFTBALL and plop it onto the baking sheet! This story always made us laugh and jokingly invite Papa from the couch over to the kitchen table and in true tradition he would take a huge handful of dough, roll it into a ball the size of a softball and plop it onto the baking sheet, every year.

Carrying on in tradition, last year my husband and I bought our first home together, welcomed our first baby into the world and were excitedly hosting Christmas at our house. For the very first time, I was making our family Snowball recipe. I was enthusiastic and eager but also nervous that they would not match up to the mouthwatering ones I had grown up with my entire life. After pulling them out of the oven and without having begun to share the story about my Papa, my husband came over and offered a helping hand. Sure enough his first inclination was to take a huge handful of dough, roll it into a ball the size of a softball and plop it onto the baking sheet! I laughed so hard I cried.

Now this year was the first year my daughter is semi old enough to comprehend Christmas and I wanted to start the Snowball tradition early with her. My mom came over to visit for the weekend and we had a blast reminiscing about all the years we have been baking these cookies and hopefully all the years to come as we continue passing the recipe on through the generations. My daughter took handfuls of dough and either ate it or dropped it as sprinkles all over the baking sheet. Luckily she has a few more years before she needs to get the hang of it. Making Snowball cookies with both my mom and daughter this year is a memory I’ll cherish for forever.

In celebration with the holiday season, I wanted to share an easy holiday dessert recipe – Budin De Pan (Bread Pudding).  Its a family-favorite because my mother often makes this dessert during the holiday season (and throughout the year).  I was thankful for her help in the Facebook Live video below showcasing step-by-step instructions and her expert tips.

Easy Budin De Pan (Bread Pudding)

Ingredients

• 2cups raisins(Raisins do not have to be included, if you don't desire. Also, prunes or dates can be substituted for the raisins).
• 1loaf 1 day-old bread (Cuban bread or high quality bakery bread)Tip: Don't use sliced bread like Wonder Bread - it will tear too easy.
• 6large eggs
• 1/3cup white sugar
• 1/3cup brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
• 1can sweetened condensed milk
• 1can evaporated milk
• 1stick butter, melted
• 3cups whole milk
• 2teaspoons cinnamon
• 1 1 lemon peel, grated
• 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

1. Take your raisins and soak them in four cups of hot water until they plump up, about 30 minutes. Alternatively, raisins can be soaked overnight in rum or whiskey. (If soaking overnight, the raisins don't have to be soaked in water).
2. Use an electric mixer to beat the white sugar, brown sugar, and the eggs until creamy. Gradually add the sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk. Beat until frothy.
3. Add the melted butter, whole milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt and beat until well blended.
4. Lightly butter a 9” x 13” pan. Arrange the bread cubes in the pan, scatter the plumped raisins among the bread, and slowly pour in the milk mixture
5. Bake in the oven for about one hour. You can tell its is done when the entire top puffs up and a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Recipe Notes

• If you don't like raisins, you don't have to add them. Proceed with the instructions - just omit the raisins.
  Also, you can use prunes or dates instead of raisins.
• You can use bread that is more than a 1 day-old for the recipe as well (2 - 5 days old).

After Thanksgiving, there is usually an abundance of food in the refrigerator. Everything from leftover turkey to leftover pumpkin pies, many are eating Thanksgiving leftovers for a few days after Thanksgiving Day.  Coming up with creative and unique recipes to that feature all of the Thanksgiving leftovers is a fun part of  the post-Thanksgiving days.  One after Thanksgiving recipe for leftover sweet potato pie is sweet potato cake.  Its basically using the already made for Thanksgiving sweet potato pie into a great tasting moist cake (or rolls) that can be used for a breakfast, as a side dish for dinner, or dessert.

3/4 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups cooked, mashed sweet potatoes or sweet potato pie
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 cup beer

Directions
1.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking dish.

2.Stir together the sugar and vegetable oil in a large bowl until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla and sweet potatoes. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon in a separate bowl; stir into the batter 1 cup at a time, alternating with the beer just until everything comes together. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.

3.Bake for 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a knife inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting (optional) or serving.
