Director Pramod Payyanur, famous for his television and theatre productions, has stated that he will be using a plenty of freshers in his debut film 'Balyakalasakhi' based on one of the most famous writings in Malayalam. The movie which will have Megastar Mammootty in the lead as late writer Vaikkom Muhammed Basheer's famous character, Majeed, will have at least 15 new names carefully selected from college students and theatre artistes in various other supporting characters. The selection camp will be held from the 22nd of Febuary at various parts of the state. Those who are interested to don a role in the movie can sent their applications to 'Living art and estheis creations, Media Box Office, 28/630-A, K P Vallon road, Kadavanthra from today.

The announcement of the production of 'Balyakalasakhi' was held recently at Ernakulam, which was inaugurated by Prof M K Sanu.The movie which will be on sets soon, will have music by Shahbaaz aman, and Raghavan master. The movie will be on sets by the month of July.

Gautami Nair to debut with Mammootty's son

If confidence is the buzzword today, Gautami Nair is definitely in tune with the times. Awaiting the release of her debut film opposite Mammootty's son Dulquar Salman, she is simply poise personified. The lead lady of the highly anticipated 'Second Show', she has no qualms revealing tinsel town was not part of her immediate plans. "I never nurtured any fancy for arc lights and not even in my wildest dreams imagined myself as an actor. After plus two I joined Pharm D course in Amrita but soon realised it was not my cuppa. So I started preparing for medical entrance in full swing and it was then 'Second Show' happened," she says.

When Gautami terms her silver screen entry an accident, she means it. "My cousin was an assistant director in the film and my stills were sent to the team without my knowledge. I was called for an audition out of the blue and in no time I was in," she says. She swears playback singing was the only film-related area she was interested in. "I thought I would balance medicine and singing," says Gautami who has already recorded for a music album.

She says 'Second Show' was a jolly good ride for her as majority of the cast and crew members were first-timers. "Since all of us were freshers, shooting was a freewheeling affair. There were many funny moments. We used to wander the Calicut streets looking for good food joints just like college-goers," she says.

Mammootty bags the Cultural Icon of Kerala at Ujala-Asianet film awards

Mammootty was honoured with the Cultural Icon of Kerala award in the 14th Asianet-Ujala film awards distribution. The award ceremony took place on Friday, January 6th at Dubai festival city.

Superstar Mammootty bagged the Cultural Icon of Kerala award. Mohanlal, Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, Asin, Vidya Balan, Kavya Madhavan, Manoj K Jayan, Archana Kavi, Lakshmi Gopala Swami, Maneka Suresh Kumar and many other celebrities attended the grand function as well.

Roma, Divya Unni, Manisha Lamba, Vidya Unni and Rima Kallingal performed at the Asianet-Ujala film awards. Kalabhhavan Mani, Benny Dayal and Rimi Tomi cheered the audience with their songs. Suraj, Jagadeesh, Jagathy Sree Kumar, Tini Tom, Kalpana and KPAC Lalitha presented various comedy skits. The award winners were given a statuette designed by artist Namboothiri along with a prize.

The girl who slapped Mammootty's Son Dulquar

Upcoming artiste Gauthami Nair can’t stop gushing about her experience with Mammootty’s son, Dulqar Salman in the youth-packed movie, Second Show.

Gauthami, who is now settled in Ambalapuzha considers herself lucky to be Dulquar’s co-star in her debut movie.

She says, “Getting to act with Dulquar, is indeed a big opportunity for me! I was tense because I had to pair up with Mammootty’s son in the movie, but then I removed that thought completely from my mind and started considering him as my co-star in Dulquar, which was easy for me then.”

In Second Show, she plays the role of a village girl called ‘Geethu’ and certain things that Geethu does changes the life of Lalu (Dulquar).

The petite beauty has lots to express about her experience with her co-stars. “I enjoyed each day and didn’t realise when the shooting got over finally.” She recollects a scene where she had to slap Dulquar several times.

It’s a must-watch movie says the young star, because of the energy-filled young cast and a different storyline altogether. “I am sure that the two-hour movie will entertain the public and will be worth watching,” adds the actor.

Gauthami completed her schooling in Kuwait came down to Kerala to pursue medicine. Following her father’s footstep, Gauthami too wanted to become a doctor but the world of glitz and glamour beckoned her.

“My cousin sent my photos to the associate director of Second Show and I was selected after an audition,” she added. The young girl who does not want to give up her studies for movies is presently doing a correspondence course in literature.

Although settled in Kuwait, Gauthami didn’t face any language problem and is comfortable speaking Malayalam. However, debut director Srinath Rajendran considered her voice a tad unfit for the role of a village girl so, this coupled with her NRI accent meant that the movie had to be dubbed.

About her future plans and her stint in films, Gauthami says wants to wait for the release of Second Show on January 20 before she answers the question. “I want people to see me on the big screen.

I want to hear their comments and then I will decide whether I should take up any other projects or not,” says the actor.

Dulquar Salman, the next Mammootty in the making?

Pokkiriraja for a Hindi remake

As director Vysakh is all set to kick off his new movie 'Mallu Singh' by this weekend, his debut film 'Pokkiriraja' is getting ready to go places. Bollywood star Akshay Kumar who has got an immense liking to the film is ready to buy the remake rights of the movie which will be made in the title 'Nam Bhai Boss' in Hindi. Akshay, naturally will be appearing in the role that Mammootty has done immortal in this big hit of 2009. Theatre model and Pakistani actor Imran Abbas will appear in the role of Soorya that Prithviraj has done in the original. The director of the multicrore multistarrer 'Blue' Antony Dsouza, will call the shots for this remake which will be on theatres by the end of this 2012.

Another interesting development is that Akshay has also bought the redo rights of 'Appadi Podu'... Vijay's hit song from the movie; Gilli- for including in this film. The year end is sure to witness Akshay dancing to the steps of 'Appadi podu..' and speaking the dialogues of Mammootty in this remake of Pokkiriraja.

Irate Prithvi opts out Mammootty joins Mumbai Police

As we all know, Prithviraj is quite outspoken. Sometimes calling a spade a spade has had landed him in a few awkward situations.

Lately, the Mollywood buzz hints that Prithviraj has opted out of Mumbai Police, obviously because of clash of dates and Mohanlal.

He was to have played the lead role in Mumbai Police directed by Roshan Andrews.

Prithvi said that he pulled out of it as the project was getting delayed, and he was tired of the long holdup. Roshan is busy with Casanova. The plan was to shoot Mumbai Police during July and release it by December.

Roshan could not meet the Casanova schedule because Mohanlal had given impromptu dates to his director-friend Priyadarshan for his Bollywood flick Tezz and just released Arabiyum Ottakavum P Madhavan Nayarum.

Meanwhile, Mammootty gained on Prithviraj's loss. Mammootty has now been roped in to play the lead role in Mumbai Police.

Resul Pookutty to unite Mammootty and Big B

One of the best known technicians of Indian cinema, Resul Pookutty, had always expressed his interest in directing films. In fact he had one project going five years ago which got shelved due to financial reasons. Resul was then planning to make a movie out of the famous novel by Anand- ' Govardhan's Travels' with Mammootty as the hero. It was then planned in three languages, but the last minute crisis led the master technician to concentrate back on his sound engineering business.

But now Resul is taking more active steps to realise his dream. This time he will be bringing in Megastar Mammootty and none other than 'Big B'- Amitabh Batchchan for the first time together for his movie. The flick will tell the emotional story about a father -son relationship and will use the best of the technicians from Bollywood. As there are many more international projects coming his way, Resul will start working on his debut directorial venture only after completing his current assignments.

Mammootty fans association to pray

In the contemporary season of adopting different tactics to show their protest, the Mammootty fans association of the state has decided to hold Mass Prayer Sessions to protest against the various governments who are not paying heed to the demands for the new Mullaperiyar Dam.

In these prayer sessions, the fans will pray for the positive decisions in favour of Kerala and for igniting more realistic thoughts in the minds of political leaders of Tamil Nadu.

As a part of the plans, 'Shayana Pradhakshinam' was organised in Thaliyil Kshetram in the capital city which was attended by the district representatives of the fans associations. Prayer sessions were also organised at Thanur Mosque while the representatives in the Kottayam district will organise similar sessions in many churches in Kottayam tomorrow.

The state committe of the association has asked all the primary members of the asaociation to take part in prayer sessions, before the meeting between the two state Chief Ministers take place shortly. Though the fans association are in full spirits, the megastar hasn't yet jumped into the fray airing his opinions about the Dam issue.

Kaniha to be Mammootty's heroine again

Lal directed Mammootty film 'Cobra' has remained in the news for several reasons, and one of them has been the film's heroines.

At first it was reported that Padmapriya has been cast opposite Lal and that Lekshmi Rai would be Mammootty's pair in the film.

Later Lekshmi Rai was out of the picture, and Sruthi Ramakrishnan, was rumoured to have been roped in instead of Lekshmi.

And now, Lekshmi Rai is back in the film, and would be Lal's heroine. Sruthi Ramakrishnan is not a part of the project, and Kaniha would be seen opposite Mammootty in the film.

Kaniha and Mammootty were seen together earlier in films like 'Pazhassi Raja' and 'Drona 2010'.

Awards are a relief during crises: Mammootty

The strike called by the producers' association took its toll on actors, directors, production companies and others associated with Mollywood.

But thanks to television shows and award functions, the stars were everywhere. These star-studded functions gave the actors an opportunity to be in the limelight despite any new movie releases. Even superstar Mammootty shared the view.

"Such award functions are indeed a relief during the on-going crisis in M'Town," said Mammootty while attending an award function held in the city recently. Mammootty was delighted to have given the chance to honour Padmasree K J Yesudas with the best singer award during the occasion.

However, the crisis has been resolved and the stars will be seen more onscreen than off-screen.

Mollywood's favourite actor Mammootty prefers to have nothing to do with what the word 'superstar' may suggest.

So much so that he has appealed to fans and audience not to refer to him with the word at any point. "It is indeed an honour to be called a superstar, but considering the accusations that are often inflicted upon superstars these days, I think I'd rather be called an actor," says Mammootty.

On his visit to Kochi recently, as a reply to comedian Tini Tom's reference to Mammootty 'being the only real superstar in the Malayalam film industry, the actor jokingly rebuked, "Superstars seem to be the cause of all the problems in our industry. In fact, the epithet has turned into an offensive term."

Incidentally, Malayalam cinema has been rather conflict-ridden over the last decade, with actors as well as several other eminent personalities blaming the reigning 'superstars' Mohanlal and Mammooty for the pathetic state of the industry. They have also been accused of allegedly ensuring not many youngsters are given the opportunity to make a mark in the industry and of playing roles that are not suited for their age.

Mammooty is currently awaiting the release of Venicile Vyapari by Shafi, which is set during a time when there were no mobile phones or Internet. "Unlike period films, the eighties is an age that people remember and can relate to," says the actor. Young actress Kavya Madhavan has been cast opposite Mammootty in this film.

Mammootty's charity to sponsor 250 more heart patients

Mammootty is not only a superb actor, he is also into charitable activities and the latest is that he will sponsor another 250 heart patients by joining hands with the NIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

Speaking to IANS, the superstar said that he will visit the hospital on Thursday to spend some time with those who underwent heart surgeries.

"Along with NIMS Hospital two years back we had announced that 100 poor patients would be given totally free treatment, including by-pass surgeries. We did that and now we have decided to carry forward the scheme for another 250 more poor patients," said Mammootty.

The veteran superstar, who turned 58 this month, does charity work through his Fans Association and apart from sponsoring heart surgeries, he is also involved in providing free cataract surgeries.

Faizal Khan, managing director of NIMS Hospital, said that they are happy that Mammootty has decided to sponsor another 250 patients.

"The patients are identified by his Fans Association through medical camps. The financial position of the selected patients are thoroughly examined by them and the poorest of the poor people are selected. Once they get admitted to our hospital, then we take over till the time the patient leaves the hospital by providing free treatment," said Khan.

Mammootty in three get-ups

Though this year has been dull for Mammootty at the box office, the megastar is planning to hit back thrice as strong.

The actor will be seen in three different appearances in his next movie 'Venicile Vyapari.' Mammootty will donne the role of a police constable, an undercover cop and a coir merchant in the film set in the 1980s.

The movie is directed by hit filmmaker Shafi who had earlier teamed up with the megastar to deliver super hits like 'Thommanum Makkalum,' 'Mayavi' and 'Chatambinadu.'

'Venicile Vyapari' tells the story of Pavithran, a police constable who is deputed to investigate a murder case in Alappuzha, popularly known as the Venice of the East. He chooses the identity of a coir worker to carry on the investigation. Through his disguise he finds that he's good at his job as a coir merchant and consequently quits the constable's job.

The entertainer narrates the ups and downs of Pavithran's life in the backdrop of the problems faced by the coir industry during the 80s, says the movie's scribe James Albert.

The movie, which was entirely shot in Alappuzha, has Kavya Madhavan and Poonam Bajwa playing the female leads. Interestingly, Alappuzha was also the location for Kavya's Mollywood debut as a child artist 15 years ago in 'Azhakiya Raavanan,' which also had the megastar playing the lead.

Another highlight of 'Venicile Vyapari' is the remixed version of retro classic song Kannum Kannum from the 1980 movie 'Angadi.'

Mammootty's next movie 'Shikari,' which will be released in Kannada and Malayalam, will also see him playing double role in two different timelines.

The movie, which will mark the megastar's Kollywood debut, will have him playing a software engineer in the present time who chances on an unfinished manuscript featuring a hunter of the pre-Independence era.

Poonam Bajwa, who plays the female lead, will also essay two roles in the movie, which is directed by Abhay Simha.

Mammootty vows to avoid liquor in films

Malayalam superstar Mammootty has produced a documentary that asks people to avoid liquor in Kerala, which has recorded the highest alcohol consumption in the country. He also said he would do his best to avoid liquor and not act in film sequences featuring alcohol.

Mammotty's 40-second film with a message - Say No to Liquor and Say No to Drugs - was unveiled Thursday by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

"I always try to avoid such scenes but at times it becomes imperative to do it because the situation demands it. I assure everyone that from now on I will do my best to avoid such scenes which depict liquor or liquor imposed scenes," said Mammootty, who has been the numero one actor of the Malayalam film industry for two decades, at the event.

Pointing to director Priyadarshan, who was present at the event, Mammootty said: "You have to ask people like him (Priyadarshan) because they ask us to do this and that. But let me tell you, I will do my best to do away with such scenes."

Chandy said that people should make an edeavour to rid Kerala of the tag of being the top liquor consuming state.

"Not long ago, Kerala was known for the huge strides it had made in literacy and its health status. But of late, it has taken a back seat and we are now known as the top liquor consuming state. This has to change and we all hope that the promotional material like this (Mammootty's documentary) will do us a world of good," the chief minister said.

Excise Minister K. Babu said that the video will be shown in theatres and will be aired on television, besides being screened in educational institutions.

"The young minds have to be taught the evils of liquor and drugs - our target group is schoolchildren," said Babu.

According to a report, liquor sales touched an all time high of Rs.6,730.30 crore 2010-11 from Rs.5,539.85 crore in 2009-10.

The government earned Rs.5,239 crore from liquor sales during the last fiscal year, while it was Rs.4,260 crore in 2009-10.

Mammootty to appear in an evergreen Jayan song

Following the rage that the 'Oru Madhurakkinavin' remix turned out to be, another yesteryear hit song is to be remixed soon.

Remember the 'Kannum Kannum' song from the film 'Angadi' that had Jayan and Seema sharing the screen space?

Mammootty and Poonam Bajwa would appear in the remix of the song in Shafi's new film 'Venicile Vyapari'. The song would be shot on locations at Mysore and Ooty.

The song that was originally composed by Shyam would be remixed by Bijibal.

Rosshan Andrrews, Mammootty team up for political thriller

After directing Mohanlal for three films, director Rosshan Andrrews will soon work with megastar Mammootty in an yet-to-be titled political thriller scripted by Bobby-Sanjay duo of Traffic fame.

Sanjay confirms the news and says that the project will start after the director-scriptwriters team finishes their forthcoming ventures 'Casanova' and 'Mumbai Police.'

Rosshan is currently busy with Mohanlal-starrer 'Casanova,' which was earlier scheduled to be an Onam release. As the name suggests Mohanlal would be playing a playboy who owns a successful international chain of flower boutiques. In addition to charming the belles with his flamboyance he also tries to even the score with his foes using his primary weapon of choice: Love!

Mammootty v/s Age : Mammootty turns 60

Megastar Mammoottyturns 60 on Wednesday and it is time to wish him a happy birthday.

Mammootty, born on September 7, 1951 has also acted in a few Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada films. During a career spanning more than three decades, he has acted in more than 360 films, and is only next to Prem Nazir in the number of lead roles in Indian films.

Mammootty was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor thrice. He also won seven Kerala State Film Awards, and eleven Filmfare Awards.

Mammootty is Chairman of Malayalam Communications, which runs Malayalam TV channels Kairali TV, People TV, and WE TV.Mammootty has promoted humanitarian causes throughout Kerala and is the goodwill ambassador of the Akshaya project.

He is a graduate in law and practiced for two years before debuted into the movie industry.

Mammootty is married to Sulfath and has two children.

Mammootty turns producer

Mollywood star Mammootty will now wear the hat of a producer for the first time. The veteran actor will produce Lal's next directorial venture, Cobra.

Mammootty who owns a production house - Playhouse - have been active as a distributor. His compnay has distributed movies like Ritu, Kaana Kanmani, Chattambinadu and Neelathamara. However, this will be the first time he dons the role of a producer for his own movie.

Lal who is directing the megastar for the first time is another highlight of the movie. Along with Mammooty Lal also plays an important role in Cobra. "I have acted along with Mammootty in a few movies. I have even produced his movies. But, this is the first time I am directing him," says the actor.

Lal has acted along with Mammootty in hits like Thommanum Makkalum and Best Actor. They hope to create the same magic in their next endeavour.

Cobra revolves around the life of two co-brothers who are known as Cobra. "Cobra is a short form used for co-brothers," says Lal. He assures that the movie will be a thorough entertainer for all age groups, a trait of most of his movies. Mamta Mohandas and Lakshmi Rai have been roped in to play the lead heroines. Music is by Alex Paul.

Shooting for Cobra will begin on November 1. It is expected to hit the screens in February 2012.

Mammootty guidies the young

Invite Mammootty on a stage and the audience would listen to him in rapt attention for he speaks even more elegantly in real life than he does in reel.

He has always surprised his audience with his witty speeches, his varied interests in world affairs and his open mindedness towards the new and young ones in the film industry. Quite a few debutant directors have enjoyed his support and encouragement as they took baby steps into the big world of cinema.

One of the most appreciated filmmakers in Malayalam today, Blessy, has on numerous occasions cited the story of how the actor made it possible for him to be a scriptwriter.

“When I was doing my first film Kazcha, I had approached different people for scriptwriting. It was Mammootty who told me to write it the same way I had narrated the story to him. If it was not for him, I would probably not have known the taste of scriptwriting. We don’t just discuss films that I do with him. We talk about all my movies — be it Kazhcha, Thanmathra, Brahmaram or Pranayam. He is like a brother.”

Martin Prakkat also owes it to Mammootty for discovering his filmmaking skills. “To this day, I have no idea how he found out about it. I was a photographer who had interest in filmmaking. Only a couple of my friends knew about this. But Mammootty somehow learnt about it,” says the director of Best Actor.

“I have always felt he treats me with special care. Maybe that is the way everyone who has worked with him feels.”

It is indeed the way every newcomer, even those who haven’t worked with him, feels. Says Arun Kumar Aravind, director of critically acclaimed film Cocktail, “He saw it on the day the film was released and told the producer Milan Jaleel that he was very happy about the movie. His family saw it two or three times. Later when I met him in the sets of his film August 15, he encouraged me to bring out more such new and interesting themes. Mammootty has always encouraged new thoughts in cinema.”

Mammootty's car rammed

Malayalam Superstar Mammoottys car was hit by a bus in the Aroor-Ernakulam route recently.

The veteran actor was returning home from the shoot of his upcoming film Venicile Vyapari, when his car was hit by a private bus. Though none of the occupants in the car were injured, including Mammootty, the crash did cause a major dent on the actor's car. The police immediately rushed to the spot and seized the bus. Mammootty however, did not take any action on the bus driver as he had apologized to the actor for rash driving.

Deepan and Mammootty to come together for 'Newsmaker'

'Newsmaker' would be produced by George, Mammootty's personal assistant. The film would be produced under the banner of Cincil Celluloid.

Deepan would also be directing Prithviraj in the film 'Hero'. 'Newsmaker' would commence only after 'Hero's is complete, and would be Mammootty's Onam release in 2012.

Mammootty in Venicile Vyapari

One of the most talked about upcoming movies, Venicile Vyapari, will have a big surprise from Mammootty.

The star, who has joined the sets after the Income tax raids issue, is getting ready to make another milestone appearance through the movie.

Mammootty will appear in three different roles in the film.

Kavya Madhavan and Poonam Bajwa are teaming up with the megastar in the lead roles.

The film by Shafi will feature Mammootty in the role of a coir merchant and a police officer. The crew wants to keep the star’s third get up a secret.

The last time, Mammootty was seen essaying three get ups was in the movie Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha, which won him the best actor award last year at the State awards.

Venicile Vyapari which is scripted by James Albert of the Classmates fame is slated to release this November.

South Indian superstar Mammootty's son Dulquar Salman’s marriage will take place in December.

Speaking to the media for the first time since the IT raids at his offices and residences, Mammootty said: "Yes, the engagement is over and the marriage is fixed for December 22 to be held in Chennai and a reception here on December 26. It will be a very solemn occasion and a private affair."

Asked about his future daughter-in-law, Mammootty said, "They are a North Indian Muslim family settled in Chennai and she has just finished her architecture. The alliance has been fixed by the elders from both families and is not a love marriage."

The superstar recently joined the sets of Veniceile Vyapari, directed by Shafi with Kavya Madhavan as the heroine. Veniceile Vyapari is scripted by James Albert and produced by veteran Murali Films Madhavan Nair.
