Ukrainian Officials Say the World’s Largest Aircraft, Antonov AN-225, Has Been Destroyed.

The Antonov AN-225, a massive plane with more than 30 years of service, was reportedly destroyed last week during the fourth day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, reports the Agence France-Presse. The aircraft, also known as Mriya ("dream" in Ukrainian), was parked at an airfield near the capital city of Kyiv when Russian forces attacked it, reports Jack Guy for CNN.

"Russia may have destroyed our 'Mriya'. But they will never be able to destroy our dream of a strong, free, and democratic European state. We shall prevail!" Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Twitter.

Last week, Russian forces took control of the airport in Gostomel, where the AN-225 was undergoing maintenance. At the time of the attack, the plane had one of its engines dismantled for repairs, so it could not take off that day despite the commands given, Ukroboronprom, the weapons manufacturer that manages the Antonov company, said in a statement. According to CNN, satellite images from Maxar Technologies show damage to part of the hangar where the Mriya was stored.

Currently, the Antonov company has not released any comment on the plane's status and said that more details would be released after the aircraft is examined by experts, reports Sravasti Dasgupta for the Independent. There is also no independent confirmation of the plane's destruction, although video posted to social media seemed to back-up the beseiged nation's claims.

According to van der Linden, "The loss of Myriya means that aviation has lost a highly capable tool that was particularly adept at transporting massive quantities of relief materials throughout the world."

The AN-225 has been used to deliver humanitarian aid to other countries during times of crisis. For example, in 2010, the AN-225 was used to deliver relief supplies for those affected by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that devastated Haiti. The aircraft also transported medical supplies to various areas during the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

As Nigeria bans Twitter, Express VPN records 200% increase in web traffic – Harold Li

Nigeria’s government announced on Friday that it was suspending Twitter “indefinitely” after the deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Tweet, which violated Twitter’s “abusive behaviour” policy.

Since the ban, users have been on the lookout for ways to access the social media platform through the use of a VPN. The volume of online search conducted on the word “VPN” showed its popularity during the week according to the search tracking site, Trends Map.

Users who generally express their views on Twitter and other social platforms opted for VPNs to conceal their IP addresses, keeping internet service providers (ISPs) in the dark about their online activities and locations.

One of such popular VPNs accessed by Nigerian users was Express VPN. Harold Li, vice president of ExpressVPN told Nairametrics that ExpressVPN.com saw a >200% increase in web traffic from Nigeria. The biggest spike came on Saturday, June 6th, when web traffic increased by around 250% compared to the day prior.

VPNs are first and foremost, security tools that help to protect users from being hacked, tracked, monitored, or otherwise compromised. ExpressVPN believes that digital privacy and internet accessibility are human rights, and will continue to speak out on this issue while encouraging others to do the same.

Despite the massive switch to VPNs, there have been harrowing concerns about the risk of using VPN like sharing user data with a third party or breaching privacy. Harold noted that ExpressVPN does not share user data with third parties. He said, “we do not collect anything that would allow ExpressVPN or anyone else to match an individual to specific network activity or . We have designed our systems to not have sensitive data about our customers. Even when compelled, we cannot provide data that we do not possess.”

ExpressVPN sees data as a “liability” and the company’s guiding principle toward data collection is to collect only the minimal data required to operate a world-class VPN service at scale.

The futurist, Alvin Toffler— best known for his book Future Shock — wrote a book in 1990 entitled “Powershift — Knowledge, Wealth and Violence at the edge of the 21st Century“ (seePowershift (book) - Wikipedia). In that book Toffler described three types of power:

Force (physical power)
Wealth (economic power)
Knowledge (the power of information)

Or, as his chapter 2 title says: Muscle, Money and Mind!

Most of us learn about force very early. Whether it’s from parental punishment, bullying, or watching Hollywood movies, we all come to understand that violence, or the threat of violence, is powerful. Criminals use it. Gangs use it. Terrorists use it. Good guys use it when they have no other choice. Society strongly discourages us from using it. The power of force predates civilization, and its unsanctioned use is considered to be uncivilized.

The invention of money, as a flexible means of facilitating trade, provided a new type of power — one that could be even more powerful and flexible than force, because it could be used to buy force. And, unlike force, because it could be used both as a carrot and as a stick. With wealth, you can induce people to do things willingly, rather than “force” them. While force is rather individualized, wealth is something that can be accumulated. With enough money, you can buy an army. Or just buy what you want. Or buy out whomever has what you want if they won’t let you have it. Wealth usually trumps force, when it comes to power conflicts.

Toffler observed that throughout most of history, the power of force reigned supreme. The industrial revolution, though, was a transformative period in more ways that just technology. It also caused a shift from force as the primary type of power in society to wealth as the new and preferred means to exert power. Use of force became regulated by law.

Following World War II, and with the rapid development of communications and computers, Toffler believes another shift began — from wealth as the primary power to information as the new power of choice. Wealth transformed from being predominantly land-based to becoming more generalized as “capital”, held by individuals and companies. The new Information Age quickly reveal the versatility of knowledge.

Information, as power, has some unique qualities.

Unlike wealth, which was originally based on land ownership and is still based on ownership of finite resources, the pool of potential knowledge in the world is virtually inexhaustible.
Information is valuable for trade when you have it and someone else wants it. But, if that information becomes known to others — if you lose exclusive control of it — then it becomes nearly worthless to you for trade. However, it still remains useful to you for other things.
Information, unlike goods, cost nothing to move around.
Information can be shared, and then used over and over again, without exhaustion. It is effectively an infinite resource.
Information may become valueless as a result of some new information that supercedes or invalidates it. That doesn’t happen with money — except in cases of total economic collapse.

Those are just a few ways information, as a source of power, is unique and different from the other types of power. With the right information, you can overcome someone else’s wealth, or their ability to use force.

Information truly is power. And as Toffler predicted in 1990, it has become the predominant source of power in society today.

Knowledge is power. Information is power. The secreting or hoarding of knowledge or information may be an act of tyranny camouflaged as humility.

WAEC releases 2018 WASSCE results

The West African Examinations Council on Tuesday announced the release of its January/February series of the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

The council’s Head of National Office, Mr. Olu Adenipekun who announced the release in Lagos, said results of 1,021 candidates were, however, withheld.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the approval to introduce and conduct the additional diet in the country and other national offices of the five-member countries was given at the council’s 65th annual general meeting in March 2017.

The introduction of the series for Private candidates, brings to the three, the number of examinations conducted by the council each year.

According to Adenipekun, the results were withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice by the affected candidates.

He said the cases were being investigated and that reports of the investigations would be presented to the appropriate committee of the council in due course, for considerationThe committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates,’’ Adenipekun said.

According to him, 11,721 candidates registered for the examination, while 11,307 actually sat for the test.

Giving a breakdown of statistics of candidates’ performance at the examination, the HNO said that 8,113 candidates obtained credits and above in two subjects.

He noted that 6,375 others obtained credits and above in three subjects, while 4,762 candidates obtained credits and above in four subjects.

Adenipekun also said that 3,263 candidates obtained credits and above in five subjects, while 2,010 others obtained credits and above in six subjects.

“A total 1,937 candidates, representing 17.13 per cent, obtained the minimum of credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

“The percentage of candidates in this category in the WASSCE in 2017 was 26.01 per cent.

“From the statistics of performance, it is safe to say that candidates performance is not satisfactory, compared to what obtained in the same diet for private candidates in 2016 and 2017.

A blimp, or non-rigid airship, is an airship (dirigible) without an internal structural framework or a keel. Unlike semi-rigid and rigid airships (e.g. Zeppelins), blimps rely on the pressure of the lifting gas (usually helium, rather than hydrogen) inside the envelope and the strength of the envelope itself to maintain their shape.
The B-class blimps were patrol airships operated by the United States Navy during and shortly after World War I. The Navy learned a great deal from the DN-1 fiasco. The result was the very successful B-type airships. Dr. Jerome Hunsaker was asked to develop a theory of airship design. This was followed by then-Lieutenant John H. Towers, USN, returning from Europe having inspected British designs, and the U.S. Navy subsequently sought bids for 16 blimps from American manufacturers. On 4 February 1917 the Secretary of the Navy directed that 16 nonrigid airships of Class B be procured. Ultimately Goodyear built 9 envelopes, Goodrich built 5 and Curtiss built the gondolas for all of those 14 ships. Connecticut Aircraft contracted with U.S. Rubber for its two envelopes and with Pigeon Fraser for its gondolas. The Curtiss-built gondolas were modified JN-4 fuselages and were powered by OX-5 engines. The Connecticut Aircraft blimps were powered by Hall-Scott engines.

In 1930 a former German airship officer, Captain Anton Heinen, working in the US for the US Navy on its dirigible fleet, attempted to design and build a four place blimp called the "family air yacht" for private fliers which the inventor claimed would be priced below $10,000 and easier to fly than a fixed wing aircraft if placed in production. It was unsuccessful.

In 2014, there were approximately 13 active advertising airships in the world today. Van Wagner Airship Group is the owner and operator of 8 of these active ships, including the Hood Blimp, DirecTV blimp, and the MetLife blimp.

An aircraft is a machine used for traveling through the atmosphere. There are two types of aircraft: the first type are known as lighter-than-air crafts, which are supported by their own buoyancy or ability to float. The second are known as heavier-than-air crafts, which require the use of some sort of engine to propel them through the air.

Early theories of air travel
Humans have dreamed of flying like birds for centuries. A Chinese myth dating to at least 1500 b.c. tells of men flying through the air in a carriage driven by something very much like a modern propeller. The Greek legend of Daedalus and Icarus is closer to the image that early humans had of flight, however. According to that myth, Daedalus constructed a set of wings that he attached to his son, Icarus, as a means of escaping from the island of Crete. Icarus flew so high, however, that the wax holding the wings to his body melted, and he fell to his death.

For more than 20 centuries, humans repeated Daedalus' experiment, with ever more sophisticated attempts to duplicate the flight of birds. All such attempts failed, however, as inventors failed to recognize that the power generated by a single human could never be sufficient to lift a person off Earth's surface.

Lighter-than-air craft
Successful flight was not possible until humans understood and made use of the concept of buoyancy. Buoyancy refers to the ability of an object to float or rise in a medium (such as water or air) because the object's density is less than that of the medium. A cork floats in water, for example, because the cork is less dense than the water. Buoyant aircraft became possible when scientists discovered that certain gases—especially hydrogen and helium—are less dense than air. Heated air is also less dense than cooler air. Thus, a container filled with hydrogen, helium, or heated air will rise in normal air.

Balloons were the first aircraft to make use of this principle. The fathers of ballooning are sometimes said to be the Montgolfier brothers, Joseph and Jacques. In 1783, after a series of experiments, the brothers constructed a balloon large enough to carry two humans into the atmosphere, the first manned aircraft.

Balloons, however, are dependent on the wind for speed and direction. In the nineteenth century, cigar-shaped balloons were designed with propellers driven by steam engines to give greater control. These modified balloons came to be known as airships. The father of the modern rigid airship, known as a dirigible, is generally said to be German count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. Zeppelin's hydrogen-filled dirigible had a rigid aluminum frame over which a cloth skin was stretched. Able to be steered with complete control, Zeppelin-styled dirigibles transported more than 10,000 passengers by 1914.

Roll: Tendency of an aircraft to twist vertically around its body, the right wing sliding upward and the left wing downward, or vice versa.

Thrust: Forward force on an aircraft provided by the aircraft's power system.

Yaw: Tendency of an aircraft to rotate in a horizontal motion, with the left wing forward and the right wing backward, or vice versa.

Dirigibles filled with highly flammable hydrogen gas presented one terrifying possibility: they might explode. This fear was realized in 1937 when the dirigible Hindenburg exploded while attempting to moor in New Jersey, killing 36 people. Although later dirigibles were designed to fly with nonflammable helium, they never really regained popularity. Today, nonrigid airships using helium gas, known as blimps, are widely used for advertising and television purposes. The Goodyear blimp and its cousins have now become familiar sights at outdoor sporting events all over the United States.

Heavier-than-air craft
The father of heavier-than-air craft is said to be English scientist George Cayley (1773–1857). Cayley's research into flight laid the foundations of the modern science of aerodynamics, the study of the forces experienced by an object flying through the air. In 1853, he constructed his first working aircraft, a glider.

Gliders. A glider—also known as a sailplane—differs from a modern airplane only in that it has no power source of its own. Instead, it uses natural air movements such as updrafts and winds for propulsion and maneuvering. Gliders have very large wings, are made of the lightest possible material, and have extremely smooth surfaces. Any protrusion on the surface can produce friction that interferes with successful maneuvering. Properly designed gliders can remain in the air for hours and can travel at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour (240 kilometers per hour) using only natural updrafts.

Four fundamental aerodynamic forces
Modern aviation is said to have begun on December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Wilbur and Orville Wright, two bicycle makers from Dayton, Ohio, flew the world's first manned, powered, heavier-than-air craft. The steerable biplane (double-winged aircraft), with a gasoline engine and two propellers, remained in the air a total of only 12 seconds and covered only 120 feet (37 meters).

The problems that the Wright brothers had to solve in the early 1900s were essentially the same as those confronting aeronautical engineers in the late 1900s. In order to make a heavier-than-air machine fly, four factors have to be taken into consideration: weight, lift, thrust, and drag.

Weight and lift. Weight is caused by the pull of Earth's gravity on the airplane. To counteract this force, the plane must have a means of lift, or a force equal and opposite in direction to the pull of gravity. Aeronautical engineers know that the more quickly air moves over a surface, the less pressure it exerts on that surface. This is why the top and bottom surface of airplane wings are not identical. The top surface of a wing is designed to have a slightly curved shape, like half of a tear drop. The bottom surface of the same wing has a perfectly flat shape.

When air passes over a wing of this design, it moves faster and exerts less pressure on the top of the wing than it does on the bottom. Since the pressure under the wing is greater than the pressure on top of the wing, air tends to push upward on the wing, raising the airplane off the ground. Wing size and air speed combine to play a factor in this lift. The larger the wing, the greater the total force exerted on the bottom of the wing, giving greater lift. And the faster the air moves over a wing, the less pressure it exerts on top, also giving greater lift.

Thrust and drag. In addition to strong winds blowing over its wings, an airplane needs a forward thrust in order to move forward at a high rate of speed. The forward thrust for the aircraft comes from one of two sources: a rotating propeller blade powered by some kind of engine or a rocket engine.

The forward thrust provided by a propeller can be explained in exactly the same way as the lift on a wing. The propeller is shaped like a wing, with a rounded forward surface and a flat back surface. As the propeller rotates, air passes over its forward surface faster than it does over its back surface. As a result, the pressure on the forward surface is less than it is on the back, and the propeller is driven forward, carrying the airplane along with it.

The term drag refers to any factor that tends to slow down the forward movement of an aircraft. The most obvious type of drag is friction drag, a retarding force that results simply from the movement of an airplane through air. As air travels over an airplane wing, it does not travel smoothly, but tends to break apart and form eddies and currents that cause a drag on the airplane. One of the great challenges facing aeronautical engineers is to design aircraft in which all forms of drag are reduced to a minimum.

Aircraft stability
In flight, an airplane is subject to three major types of movements that, in the extreme, might cause it to crash: pitch, yaw, and roll. Pitch occurs when the nose of an airplane unexpectedly moves up or down. The horizontal tail at the back of an airplane body helps to prevent pitching. Yaw occurs when one wing unexpectedly moves forward while the other moves backward. Yawing is prevented partly by means of the vertical tail at the back of the airplane. Roll occurs when one wing unexpectedly moves upward while the other moves downward. Roll is prevented partly by having the outer edges of the wings tipped upward.

Jet engines
Until the 1940s, the only system available for powering aircraft was the piston-driven propeller engine. At the very end of World War II (1939–45), German scientists produced an entirely new type of power system, the jet engine. The center of the engine contains the elements necessary for its operation. Compressed air is mixed with a flow of fuel and ignited in a combustion chamber. Heated gases are formed, which push out of the rear of the engine. As the gases leave the engine, they also turn a turbine that compresses incoming air to begin the process once again.

The principle on which the jet engine operates was first developed by English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton in the seventeenth century. According to Newton's third law of motion, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In the jet engine, the action is the surge of burned gases flowing out of the back of the engine. The reaction to that stream of hot gases is a forward push that moves the engine—and the wing and airplane to which it is attached—in a forward direction. Because the exiting gases turn a turbine as well as power the engine, a jet of this kind is also known as a turbojet.

An airship or dirigible balloon is a type of aerostat or lighter-than-air aircraft that can navigate through the air under its own power. Aerostats gain their lift from large gas bags filled with a lifting gas that is less dense than the surrounding air.

In early dirigibles, the lifting gas used was hydrogen, due to its high lifting capacity and ready availability. The envelope of an airship may form a single gas bag, or may contain a number of internal gas-filled cells. An airship also has engines, crew, and optionally also payload accommodation, typically housed in one or more "gondolas" suspended below the envelope.

The main types of airship are non-rigid, semi-rigid, and rigid. Non-rigid airships, often called "blimps", rely on internal pressure to maintain the shape of the airship. Semi-rigid airships maintain the envelope shape by internal pressure, but have some form of supporting structure, such as a fixed keel, attached to it. Rigid airships have an outer structural framework which maintains the shape and carries all structural loads, while the lifting gas is contained in one or more internal gas bags or cells. Rigid airships were first flown by Count Zeppelin and the vast majority of rigid airships built were manufactured by the firm he founded. As a result, rigid airships are called zeppelins.

Airships were the first aircraft capable of controlled powered flight, and were most commonly used before the 1940s, but their use decreased over time as their capabilities were surpassed by those of aeroplanes. Their decline was accelerated by a series of high-profile accidents, including the 1930 crash and burning of British R101 in France, the 1933 and 1935 storm-related crashes of the twin airborne aircraft carrier U.S. Navy helium-filled rigids, the USS Akron and USS Macon respectively, and the 1937 burning of the hydrogen-filled Hindenburg. From the 1960s, helium airships have been used in applications where the ability to hover in one place for an extended period outweighs the need for speed and manoeuvrability such as advertising, tourism, camera platforms, geological surveys, and aerial observation.

Convair B-58 Hustler

The Convair B-58 Hustler was the first operational jet bomber capable of Mach 2 flight. The aircraft was designed by Convair engineer Robert H. Widmer and developed for the United States Air Force for service in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) during the 1960s. It used a delta wing, which was also employed by Convair fighters such as the F-102, with four General Electric J79 engines in pods under the wing. It carried five nuclear weapons; four on pylons under the wings, and one nuclear weapon and fuel in a combination bomb/fuel pod under the fuselage, rather than in an internal bomb bay.
Replacing the Boeing B-47 Stratojet medium bomber, it was originally intended to fly at high altitudes and supersonic speeds to avoid Soviet fighters. The B-58 was notorious for its sonic boom, which was often heard by the public as it passed overhead in supersonic flight.
The introduction of highly-accurate Soviet surface-to-air missiles forced the B-58 into a low-level-penetration role that severely limited its range and strategic value, and it was never employed to deliver conventional bombs. This resulted in only a brief operational career between 1960 and 1970 when the B-58 was succeeded by the smaller, swing-wing FB-111A.

Design and development

The genesis of the B-58 program came in February 1949, when a Generalized Bomber Study (GEBO II) had been issued by the Air Research and Development Command (ARDC) at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, for the development of a supersonic, long range, bombardment aviation platform. The proposed bomber's design and development was to begin less than two years after sustained supersonic flight had successfully been achieved. A number of contractors submitted bids to perform the generalized study (that hopefully would lead to a development contract) including Boeing, Convair, Curtiss, Douglas, Martin and North American Aviation.
Convair, building on its experience in earlier delta-wing fighters, beginning with the XF-92A, a series of GEBO II designs were developed, initially studying swept and semi-delta configurations, but settling on the delta wing planform. The delta planform had good internal volume for support systems and fuel; plus a low wing loading (for airframe size), that permitted supersonic flight in the mid-stratosphere (50 – 70,000 feet). The final Convair proposal, coded FZP-110, was a radical two-place, delta wing bomber design powered by General Electric J53 engines. The performance estimates included a 1,000 mph (1,600 km/h; 870 kt) speed and a 3,000 statute mile (4,800 km; 2,600 nmi) range.

The USAF chose Boeing (MX-1712) and Convair to proceed to a Phase 1 study. The Convair MX-1626 evolved further into a more refined proposal redesignated the MX-1964. In December 1952, the Air Force selected the MX-1964 as the winner of the design competition to meet the newly proposed SAB-51 (Supersonic Aircraft Bomber) and SAR-51 (Supersonic Aircraft Reconnaissance), the first General Operational Requirement (GOR) worldwide for supersonic bombers. In February 1953, the Air Force issued a contract for development of Convair's design.

The resulting B-58 design was the first "true" USAF supersonic bomber program. The Convair design was based on a delta wing with a leading-edge sweep of 60° with four General Electric J79-GE-1 turbojet engines, capable of flying at twice the speed of sound. Although its large wing made for relatively low wing loading, it proved to be surprisingly well suited for low-altitude, high-speed flight. It seated three (pilot, bombardier/navigator, and defensive systems operator) in separated tandem cockpits. Later versions gave each crew member a novel ejection capsule that made it possible to eject at an altitude of 70,000 ft (21,000 m) at speeds up to Mach 2 (1,320 mph/2,450 km/h). Unlike standard ejection seats of the period, a protective clamshell would enclose the seat and the control stick with an attached oxygen cylinder, allowing the pilot to continue to fly even "turtled up" and ready for immediate egress. The capsule would float, and the crewmember could open the clamshell, using it as a life raft.In an unusual test program, live bears and chimpanzees were successfully used to test the ejection system. The XB-70 would use a similar system (though using capsules of a different design).

Because of heat generated at Mach 2 cruise, not only the crew compartment, but the wheel wells and electronics bay were pressurized and air conditioned. The B-58 utilized one of the first extensive applications of aluminum honeycomb panels, which bonded outer and inner aluminum skins to a honeycomb of aluminum or fiberglass.
The pilot's cockpit was fairly conventional for a large multiengine aircraft. The electronic controls were ambitious and advanced for the day. The navigator and DSO's cockpits featured wraparound dashboards with warning lights and buttons, and automatic voice messages and warnings from a tape system were audible through the helmet sets. Research during the era of all-male combat aircraft assignments revealed that a woman's voice was more likely to gain the attention of young men in distracting situations. Nortronics Division of Northrop Corporation selected actress and singer Joan Elms to record the automated voice warnings. To the men flying the B-58, the voice was known as "Sexy Sally.

Weapons systems

The Sperry AN/ASQ-42 bombing/navigation system combined a sophisticated inertial navigation system with the KS-39 Star tracker (astro-inertial navigation system) to provide heading reference, the AN/APN-113 Doppler radar to provide ground speed and windspeed data, a search radar to provide range data for bomb release and trajectory, and a radar altimeter. The AN/ASQ-42 was estimated to be 10 times more accurate than any previous bombing/navigation system.
Defensive armament consisted of a single 20 mm (0.79 in) T-171E-3 rotary cannon with 1,200 rounds of ammunition in a radar-aimed tail barbette. It was remotely controlled through the Emerson MD-7 automated radar fire-control system only requiring the DSO to lock-on a selected target blip on his scope and then fire the gun; the system computing all aiming, velocity or heading differential, and range compensation.Offensive armament typically consisted of a single nuclear weapon, along with fuel tanks, in a streamlined MB-1C pod under the fuselage. Incurable difficulties with fuel leakage resulted in the replacement of the MB-1C with the TCP (Two Component Pod), which placed the nuclear weapon in an upper section while the lower fuel component could be independently jettisoned. This had the added benefit of allowing the pilot to "clean up" the aircraft for fuel efficiency or in case of emergency, while still retaining the (somewhat) more slim weapon.
The first prototype, serial number 55-660, was completed in late August 1956. The first flight took place in November 1956. A difficult and protracted flight test program involving 30 aircraft continued until April 1959^. The final B-58 was delivered in October 1962.
From 1961 to 1963, the B-58 was retrofitted with two tandem stub pylons under each wing root, adjacent to the centreline pod, for B43 or B61 nuclear weapons for a total of five nuclear weapons per aircraft. Although the USAF explored the possibility of using the B-58 for the conventional strike role, it was never equipped for carrying or dropping conventional bombs in service. A photo reconnaissance pod, the LA-331, was also fielded. Several other specialized pods for ECM or an early cruise missile were considered, but not adopted. The late 1950s High Virgo air-launched ballistic missile was designed to be launched from the B-58 with four test launches of the High Virgo carried out by a B-58 to determine ballistic missile and anti-satellite weapon system capability.

Operational history

The B-58 crews were chosen from other strategic bomber squadrons. Due to some characteristics of delta-winged aircraft, new pilots used the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger as a conversion trainer, before moving to the TB-58A trainer. The B-58 was difficult to fly and its three-man crews were constantly busy, but its performance was exceptional. A lightly loaded Hustler would climb at nearly 46,000 ft/min (235 m/s). In addition to its much smaller weapons load and more limited range than the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, the B-58 had also been extremely expensive to acquire.

World records

The B-58 set 19 world speed records, including coast-to-coast records, and one for the longest supersonic flight in history. In 1963, it flew from Tokyo to London (via Alaska), a distance of 8,028 miles (12,920 km) in 8 hours, 35 minutes, 20.4 seconds, averaging 938 miles per hour (1,510 kilometres per hour). As of 2016, this record still stands.The aircraft was serving in an operational unit, and had not been modified in any way besides being washed and waxed. One of the goals of the flight was to push the limit of its new honeycomb construction technique. The speed of the flight was limited only by the speed at which they believed the honeycomb panels would delaminate, although one of the afterburners malfunctioned and the last hour of the flight was continued at subsonic speed. This reduced the average speed to roughly Mach 1.5, despite most of the flight being at Mach 2. This B-58 was called "Greased Lightning" – the codename for the record attempt.
Some of the record winning aerospace trophies the B-58 won were the Bleriot trophy, the Thompson trophy, the Mackay trophy, the Bendix trophy and the Harmon trophy.
Singer John Denver's father, Lieutenant Colonel Henry J. Deutschendorf, Sr., USAF, held several speed records as a B-58 pilot.

Variants

XB-58: Prototype; two built.
YB-58A: Pre-production aircraft, 11 built.
B-58A: Three-seat medium-range strategic bomber aircraft, 86 built.
TB-58A: Training aircraft, eight conversions from YB-58A.
NB-58A: This designation was given to a YB-58A, which was used for testing the J93 engine. The engine was originally intended for the North American XB-70 Valkyrie Mach 3 bomber.
RB-58A: Variant with ventral reconnaissance pod, 17 built.
B-58B: Unbuilt version. SAC planned to order 185 of these improved bombers which had uprated J79-GE-9 engines, a stretched fuselage for extra fuel capacity, canards and could carry conventional weapons. A prototype B-58B was ordered (S/N 60-1109), but the entire project was canceled before construction began, due to budgetary considerations. The B variant was also planned to be the "mothership" for a Mach 4 parasite called the FISH (for First Invisible Super Hustler). Because It was to be faster and larger than the B-58A, it could carry the FISH instead of the external pod. At an altitude of at least 35,000 feet (11,000 metres) at speeds in excess of Mach 2 the FISHs three ramjet engines could be started. The Super Hustler would then disengage from the B-58B and climb up to 90,000 feet (27,000 metres) and accelerate to Mach 4.2 to complete its mission.
B-58C: Unbuilt version. Enlarged version with more fuel and 32,500 lbf (145 kN) J58, the same engine used on the Lockheed SR-71. Design studies were conducted with two and four engine designs, the C model had an estimated top speed approaching Mach 3, a supersonic cruise capability of approximately Mach 2, and a service ceiling of about 70,000 ft (21,300 m) along with the capability of carrying conventional bombs. Convair estimated maximum range at 5,200 nautical miles (6,000 mi; 9,600 km). The B-58C was proposed as a lower cost alternative to the North American XB-70. As enemy defenses against high-speed, high-altitude penetration bombers improved, the value of the B-58C diminished and the program was canceled in early 1961.

55-0666 – Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum (former Chanute AFB), Rantoul, Illinois. With the recent closure of the Chanute museum, it was announced in May 2016 that the plane will be moving to the Castle Air Museum at the former Castle Air Force Base in Atwater, California, although a timetable has not been established for its move yet.

59-2437 (Firefly II) – Lackland AFB/Kelly Field Annex (former Kelly Air Force Base), San Antonio, Texas.
59-2458 (Cowtown Hustler) – National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. This aircraft flew from Los Angeles to New York City and back on 5 March 1962, setting three separate speed records, and earning the crew the Bendix Trophy and the Mackay Trophy for 1962. The aircraft was flown to the Museum on 1 March 1969. The aircraft is on display in the Museum's Cold War gallery.
61-2059 (Greased Lightning) – Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum near Offutt Air Force Base in Ashland, Nebraska. It averaged 938 nmph flying 8,028 nmi. from Tokyo to London in 8 hours and 35 minutes in October 1963.
61-2080 – Pima Air & Space Museum, adjacent to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, in Tucson, Arizona. It was the last B-58 to be delivered.

Notable appearances in media

Jimmy Stewart, a bomber pilot during World War II and a brigadier general in the Air Force Reserve, appeared in an Air Force film, flying in the back seat of the B-58 on a typical low-altitude attack in the film B-58 Champion of Champions.
The B-58 has also appeared in the 1964 film Fail-Safe, where stock footage of B-58s was used to represent the fictional "Vindicator" bombers which attacked Moscow. The art used in the original magazine publication of the novel had depicted the "Vindicator" bombers—itself the recycling of the name of a World War II American dive bomber—as almost identical to B-58s but equipped with canards. This would have given the fictional bombers the appearance of the canceled B-58B (see Variants).

The BMW B58 is a turbocharged direct injection straight-6 DOHC engine which began production in 2015. It was launched in the F30 340i. It is also part of BMW's new modular engine family, which is based on each cylinder comprising 500cc following the B38 and B48 engine. Similar with its N55 predecessor, the B58 also features a single twin-scroll turbo, direct fuel injection, Dual Vanos and Valvetronic.
The B58 (installed in the M240i) topped Ward's 10 Best Engines of 2017 list. The B58 is rated at 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, while achieving 26 mpg.

Design

As the successor of the BMW N55 engine, the B58 also displaces 3.0 litre (though is slightly larger at 2998cc compared to 2979cc for the N55). It has a larger turbocharger with a 6 percent increase in turbine wheel size and 10 percent increase in compressor wheel diameter, resulting in a 20 percent increase in boost pressure. The B58 uses a water-to-air intercooler integrated into the intake plenum, thus reducing the charged air volume between the compressor and the intake. This increases performance by maintaining more even temperatures inside the intake. BMW has also incorporated an engine-mounted encapsulation system, which allows the engine to retain much of its heat for up to 36 hours which helps to reduce emissions and wear and tear during start-up, especially in colder climates.As a part of BMW's new modular engine family, the crankcase is a completely new design identically with the B57 diesel version, engineered as both a gasoline and diesel engine in one common part. The closed deck crankcase is equipped with a completely new structure which can be identified by a complex array of ribs on the exhaust and intake side and an additional reinforcement frame on the oil sump side.

Do you see yourself without technology?

The impact in technology in our lives, today, is unmeasurable. We use technology every day, in different ways and we do it to harming up our lives or the society we live in. But what we are used to call modern technology, technically it is not as new as we think.
For instance, if we have a great smartphone today we can figure out that it is just an advancement of an ordinary mobile phone that we had years ago. Or look at a train today – we used to use steam powered trains and now we have electronic trains – just to get faster to some place. The technology evolves, but it finds old ways and old technologies to evolve.
We use technology every day, in order to fulfil specific tasks or specific interests. We have specific needs and we want to have faster technologies.
So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the so called “Modern Technology”? Take a look below.
Advantages

Improved communication – advanced communication technology tools;
Easy access to information – at anytime and anywhere;
Improved housing and lifestyle – most of the items that we have in our homes today are automated (if we compare with houses in the 70´s, 80´s, 90´s);
Improved entertainment - we have more video games now, good music to listen and visual systems like smart TV's;
Social Networking – great improvement for individuals and businesses;
Convenience in education – online and mobile education;
Convenience of traveling – very important in our lives and in the business world;
Changed the health industry – modern technology in hospitals, reducing the mistakes made by doctors and evolving the patients treatments;
Efficiency and productivity – helping businesses increasing production, saving time and money in the industry;
Encourages innovation and creativity – it is very easy to start a job today (while at home). A good example is kickstarter.com which helps creative people get funds for projects through crowd funding.

Disadvantages

Job loss – replacing humans;
World destruction weapons – increasing endless wars;
Increased loneliness – social isolation;
Competency – increased dependency on modern tools that reduces our creativity and intelligence.

5 Things Slowing the Growth of Technology in Nigeria

Considering the size of the market, it is a shame that most of the large technology providers here are foreign (MTN, Spectranet, Smile etc). We pay huge costs for their services and the money generated from us escapes our economy and mostly returns to their respective home countries in form of taxes or expansions in their business. I have been asking myself why technology has not been embraced by the country at the same level like it has been embraced in Kenya or South Africa and these are a few of my observations:

1. The Government does not value technology as much as they should

I was reading the news and realized that the government has shared the responsibility of the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) ministry between the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Science and Technology. This was probably done for budgetary reasons but considering that the value of technology is that is shaves costs, creates new jobs and a better life for people, would this not be the time to double down on that sector and make sure viable projects are being created and supported? I also see headlines about Nigeria trying to censor porn and the first thought in my mind is how much is this going to cost to execute and to police this? Especially since we are in debt and we are cost cutting.
It just feels to me that our priorities are misplaced. I know this is hard times for Nigeria as well as the government is new but if there is any sector where money should be violently infused, it should be in technology where we can innovate to reduce costs of government operations, supporting businesses’ and creating new opportunities for the unemployed. Don’t get me wrong, the government does have initiatives on the table but it is not enough and it is too slow.

2. Nigerians do not understand or trust technology

Basically there is a lack of education generally in Nigeria about the potential of technology and also due to lack of solid implementations of technology, we witness technology fail all around us regularly. We have ATMs that debit our accounts without giving us the money, we have internet providers that are not consistent in delivering us high speed internet and having dropped calls and getting scammed by your phone company is a normal occurrence. There is so much technological failure around us so why should we invest more into this unreliable thing? When it works it is great but we have been trained time and time again to never rely on technology because it will most likely disappoint us. So we do not invest in it.

3. The cost of running a technology company is too high

In most western countries you hear about students starting million dollar businesses from their parents garage. That is not possible here in Nigeria where there is no constant electricity for children to use to investigate and experiment with computers and the cost of Internet is literally 300%+ of the price of internet in western countries. So the low barrier of entry into the technology scene enjoyed by many young fearless and imaginative people around the world is only enjoyed here by VERY few here in Nigeria, greatly reducing the probability of us releasing any technological hits.

4. It exposes corruption

Embracing technology in Nigeria would mean embracing transparency, which exposes corruption and will force us to deal with it in our system and that is just not what a lot of people are looking for now. It will lead to the changing of hands in power and wealth in our society, which is not exciting to a lot of people. Nigeria has a way of operating now and even if it does not favor most people, most people are ok with it cause the Nigerian dream is that your ‘turn’ will come. There are not a lot of people excited to flip this system on its head. Hence if you show up with software to promote efficiency in certain companies you might be met with blank stares or ‘Great stuff we will call you soon’.

5. Nigerians do not trust things made in Nigeria

This to me is probably the saddest of all. I do not know if I even want to get into this cause it can be a post on its own but basically for many reasons, some which are the fact we have been trained not to trust technology, or the lack of trust and unity between ourselves in this country, a sprinkle of colonial mentality and the lack of proper education of the public on what good technology looks like, we do not trust technology with the ‘Made in Nigeria by Nigerians’ stamp. so in order to effectively market yourself to companies or individuals it seems to help if your company is not 100% Nigerian, as in it is possible to do business with no foreign investment, partners or clients but having them only helps.

Conclusion

This is probably the darkest post I have written this year. I do not believe in complaining without an intention to fix your situation, this post is not a rant about what is wrong in Nigeria but an explanation of what I have observed in the past year researching and figuring out how to grow a technology company in Nigeria. It is a brief outline of what obstacles you may encounter, which may help you in marketing yourself effectively.
