Foodbank hamper appeal: Dec 7 to 11

LUXURY hamper appeal: Manchester South Central Foodbank based in Hulme and Moss Side is seeking donations for its Christmas Day Meal and Christmas Parcel Appeal for people who are isolated and may be on their own on Christmas Day.

Suggested items include: chocolates, fruit juices, Christmas pudding/cake, tinned meat and fish, coffee, smellies and winter warmers.

Last year hampers were given to 50 local families in need and approximately 60 people were fed on Christmas day. Donations are being taken from December 7 to 11.

You can drop off your items to Amy Barber, Public Engagement Officer, in Bellhouse building, All Saints. Contact Amy on x3393.

Bake Sale for Bi-Visibility Day

In the UK, 60% of bisexual men and 37% of bisexual women are not out about their sexuality to their colleagues, compared to only 15% of gay men and 6% of gay women or lesbians. In order to increase the visibility and help end the oppression of bisexual people worldwide, 23rd September has been designated 'Bi-Visibility Day'.

To mark the occasion, and to help raise the profile of Manchester Met's bisexual staff and students, the LGBT Society will be holding a bake sale on Wednesday 23rd September in the foyer of the Business School.

Baked goods can be donated from 10.30am onwards, with cakes, cookies and other baked goods available to buy between 11am and 2pm.

All money raised will be donated to the LGBT Foundation to help fund their Village Angels <http://lgbt.foundation/get-support/village-angels/> campaign.

Funding and resources available to support Open Access

Meeting the challenges and opportunities of Open Access

OVER the next few days academics from across the University will receive letters from the Vice-Chancellor explaining the requirements of the HEFCE Open Access policy. The letter is part of a wider Open Access awareness raising campaign that includes posters, flyers, emails, workshops and door hangers orchestrated by the Office of Research and Knowledge Exchange and Library Services.

The idea behind the campaign is to give staff the support that they need to face up to the opportunities and challenges of OA. The University’s Head of Research Professor Berthold Schoene said: “Manchester Met performed extremely well in REF2014 but funder expectations are growing all the time. One of the major pushes over the last couple of years has been towards demonstrating the public benefits and value of research.

"We’ve seen this with the introduction of the impact agenda and now the emphasis is firmly fixed on making research outputs accessible so that society can benefit from the money being spent on research. This campaign is an important step towards meeting these challenges.”

Compliance with the next REF

Most major funders already mandate that outputs from their funding must be made freely available and accessible. HEFCE has announced that all journal articles and conference proceedings with an ISSN must be made Open Access within 3 months from the date of acceptance for publication if they are to be eligible for submission to the next REF.

What does this mean for Manchester Met staff?

All new articles and conference proceedings must be made OA through the so-called gold route via payment of an article processing charge, or by the green route through the use of an institutional repository such as e-space.

The easiest way for Manchester Met staff to comply with the HEFCE policy is to use Symplectic, the University’s research management system to deposit details of research outputs. You can log into Symplectic at https://symplectic.mmu.ac.uk and then you can upload PDFs of your items into e-space at the click of a button.

Funding for Open Access

Ruth Jenkins, Head of Library Services and the Chair of the University’s OA Steering Group reflects on why OA is so important. “At Manchester Met we know that our world-leading research has the potential to transform people’s lives and that our research supports the development of considerable impacts.

"The benefits of OA can help further this mission. OA helps us to increase the visibility of our research, improves citation rates and has knock on benefits for wider society. That’s why I’m really pleased that we are now able to offer a simple solution for OA compliance using a link between Symplectic and e-space.

"Ultimately we want to move beyond compliance and that’s why we have earmarked funding to support researchers in their efforts to pay for article processing charges. TODAY is the final day for academics to have the cost of their academic dress hire for graduation ceremonies covered by the University.

All academic and support staff are most welcome to join the platform parties for any of the ceremonies.

Early on Tuesday morning, Moodle will be receiving a security upgrade, to protect it from further disruptive attacks like the one we recently experienced.

Our colleagues at ULCC will be performing the upgrade between 7am - 9am. During this two hour window, Moodle may become intermittently unavailable.

MMU Jogging Club run Morrisons Great Manchester Run

STAFF AND STUDENTS from Manchester Metropolitan University’s weekly jogging club will be taking part in the Morrisons Great Manchester Run on Sunday 10 May.

16 members of the jogging club will be taking part in the ten kilometre race, which will start on Portland Street in the heart of Manchester City Centre and finish on Deansgate, near the Hilton Hotel and Beetham Tower.

Runners include Paul Walters, Charlotte Oakes, Hattie Walworth, Kristian Scott, James Charnock, Louis Hill, Amy Wright, Gareth Hacking, Georgie Carini, Sophie Wood, Matthew Whittle, Heather Wornham, Angelique Bueler, Nadia Emam and Andrew Ross.

The places were provided following a successful Sportivate funding application from England Athletics and Liam Browne, Run! City Activator for Manchester.

Peter White, Student Engagement Officer at MMU Business school and volunteer lead of the jogging club, says, “It’s been really inspiring to see some genuine beginner runners drastically improve their performance in order to take part in the Great Manchester Run.

“Runners who struggled to maintain a slow jog for more than a few minutes when they joined are now able to run 10 kilometres.

“Others have been working hard to enhance their level of fitness and I look forward to seeing their hard work pay off on Sunday. For me, this event highlights how running in general and our jogging club is really inclusive and open to all.”

The jogging club meets every Thursday at 4:45pm at the Oxford Road entrance to All Saints Park and is just part our of our fantastic free sport and activities offer for staff and students. You can find out more information by visiting our website.

Intermittent connectivity to printing and library e-resources

'Managing Online Resource Lists' Academics' Workshops

Learn how to use the University’s Online Resource List System to manage your own online resource lists and embed within Moodle.

Sessions will cover:

- Creating an account.

- Adding various resource types to your online reading lists.

- Editing and deleting lists.

- Embedding items from your resource list directly within the content of a Moodle course page.

- Requesting new items and digitisations from the Library.

- Publishing your lists.

- Using the dashboard feature to see what students are accessing.

Graduate to Work Week 2015 registration now open

The Careers and Employability Service are running the annual Graduate to Work Week 1 – 5 June 2015.

The week is full of workshops, employer networking events and expert advice sessions, all aimed at helping 2015 graduates to prepare for life after graduation and enhance their career prospects.

Students will see benefit in attending whether they are confident in their career goals or have no idea what to do next, this is a great opportunity for students to take advantage of the support on offer to them before they leave campus.

Although the week is predominantly aimed at those graduating in 2015, all MMU students are welcome to attend.

Students who attended Graduate to Work Week 2014 said:

“This is a must attend event for anyone who is about the graduate. The advice I received throughout the week gave me the confidence to leave MMU and start to apply for jobs.”

“After the event, I applied for two jobs and had a better understanding of what was required for the application. Because of this support, I now have a job”

For those students taking part in MMU Futures, a number of the sessions running are core elements of the award so this is a great opportunity to collect points.

Students can attend as many sessions as they like but they do need to register for the week. All students who attend two or more sessions will be in with the chance of winning a £100 voucher.
