					<div class="elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix"><p>Sitting too much is bad for our health, and studies have repeatedly shown that sitting or lying for too long can damage our hearts, make us more prone to dementia and increase our risk of developing type 2 diabetes.</p><p>The NHS says that many adults in the UK spend 9 hours a day sitting down, which is a <em>lot</em>.</p><p>The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that you should regularly break up lengthy periods of sitting by getting active for 1-2 minutes. And you can get up and move for a max of 2 minutes, right?!</p><p>So get up and stretch your legs, walk to the kitchen to make a drink or go and have a conversation with a colleague face-to-face instead of sending an email. Just make sure you’re moving regularly.</p></div>

					<div class="elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix"><p>If you’re a competitive sort or motivated by stats, you can boost your activity levels by investing in an activity watch to track your steps throughout the day. The general recommendation is that we aim for 10,000 steps a day, but any increase on your current activity levels is worth celebrating.</p><p>There are a lot of ways of tracking your steps. You don’t need to suddenly start working out for hours on end – it’s unrealistic and if you’re very unfit you’ll do more damage than good. Start small and make easy lifestyle changes and you’ll be surprised at how much it can improve your fitness.</p></div>

			<p><strong>Did you know that bad breath could be a sign of diabetes? </strong>You&#8217;re probably aware of all the usual symptoms of diabetes &#8211; needing to pee more often, feeling very thirsty, blurred vision, etc. (and if these are news to you, you should probably get clued up <a href="https://www.diabetes.org.uk/diabetes-the-basics/diabetes-symptoms?gclid=CjwKCAjwxev3BRBBEiwAiB_PWJfvHcCxoDHFr2SCG2xgWcSEq97XqO9R4LnmZyA0SDNrOnMFKUEOixoCxycQAvD_BwE">here</a>) but your breath could be an indicator of undiagnosed diabetes too.</p>
<p>An acetone-like smell on your breath could mean a complication called <em>ketoacidosis</em>, which could mean that your glucose levels are too high. So if you struggle with bad breath, see a doctor, as if left untreated this could lead to your teeth falling out. Yikes.</p>
<p><strong>How has lockdown changed your activity levels?</strong> There are people who have coped by getting outside and getting active, and then there are those (like me) who have coped by hunkering down and eating their body weight in Dairy Milk.</p>
<p>It turns out that most Brits fall into the first category, with research by Decathalon finding that 42% of adults are exercising more than they were before lockdown. And although gyms are likely to remain closed for the foreseeable future, 52% of people are keen to keep up with their new fitness routines when lockdown is over. If this is you, good for you! It can help to reduce your risk of heart disease, lower your blood pressure, increase your muscle and bone strength and will improve your lung capacity. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Running also has a huge impact on our mental health and general wellbeing, as Paul, 43, found out when he started running just after lockdown started. “My gym was closed and I needed to get out of the house” he said, “so I started off walking which then turned into running. It clears my head and I don’t know how I’d have coped with the stress of lockdown without my running sessions”. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">And the ‘runner’s high’ is a proven phenomenon, which can make you feel calmer, more productive and happier. </span></p></div>

There’s a high chance of injury, higher than many other types of cardio activities. Running can be tough on your joints, and you’ve probably heard of many injuries that runners contend with &#8211; ‘runner’s knee’, Achilles pain, shin splints, heel pain, muscle strains, etc., and that can definitely be off-putting. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">However, you can do a lot to decrease your chances of getting injured. Making sure to warm up and cool down properly, building up your distance, pace and time spent running slowly and making sure you’re wearing good running shoes are all ways you can help your body stay injury-free. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Above all, listen to your body. If you’re in pain or something feels wrong, don’t push through it. </span></p></div>

You can get an overview of each week on the NHS website <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/couch-to-5k-week-by-week/">here</a>, where you will also find links to download the NHS Couch to 5k weekly podcasts and the One You Couch to 5k app. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">There’s also the Couch to 5K app by Active Network (£2.99 iOS/£2.79 Android), which gives you different options for trainers, allows you to play your own music and works with Apple Watch. <p class="p2"><span class="s1">The colour of your food can tell you a lot about its nutrients. Think about your favourite unhealthy treats, they’re mostly on the beige side of things &#8211; crisps, deep fried chicken, cake &#8211; even the glossy brown of your favourite chocolate bar doesn’t exactly scream vitality, whereas the bright colours of a fruit salad are vibrant and full of life.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">Fruit and vegetables are full of vitamins and minerals, meaning that they’re good for us. They’re also typically low in calories, so good for snacking on and bulking out meals with. Yes, that is particularly condescending, but it’s true!</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">While it’s a good thing to keep in mind, don’t get <i>too</i> hung up about colours &#8211; it’s just a good<span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>and easy guide to follow on your quest to eat a healthy, balanced diet.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Differently coloured fruits and vegetables often have an emphasis on different vitamins and minerals. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">You can literally &#8216;eat the rainbow&#8217; if you try hard enough. For example, red vegetables (tomatoes, red peppers, radishes) are a good source of vitamin C and lycopene, an antioxidant which gives these vegetables their red colour and is thought to reduce the risk of heart disease. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Green vegetables (leafy greens including kale, spinach and lettuce as well as your bog-standard greens such as broccoli, courgettes and leeks) are incredibly nutrient-dense, with 67g of raw kale giving you 684% of your daily recommended intake of vitamin K, which is essential to help our blood clot. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Orange fruits and vegetables (oranges, sweet potatoes, butternut squash) are high in beta-carotene (good for eye health) and vitamin C (which helps to maintain healthy skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage). </span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Not getting enough vitamins in your diet can lead to a variety of vitamin-deficiency diseases, such as scurvy and rickets. If they sound old fashioned, it’s because in modern society we don’t struggle to get fresh fruit and veg, and a lot of the things we eat are fortified with vitamins. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Though it’s rare, it <i>is</i> still possible to get these diseases, with scurvy (which comes from not getting enough vitamin C) in particular found to be recently on the rise. It’s not nice &#8211; with severe weakness, join and leg pain, swollen bleeding gums, teeth falling out and red and blue spots on the skin are the delights that are in store for you if you’re unlucky enough to get it. </span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Most people don’t need to as long as they’re eating a healthy, balanced diet. If you scrutinise the labels of multivitamins, you’ll often see that they’ll provide over 100% of your recommended daily allowance of some vitamins, which can potentially be harmful, or just plain useless in the case of vitamins like vitamin C, where anything your body can’t use is expelled from the body as waste. So you’ll be literally pissing money away. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">However, the Department of Health and Social Care does recommend that everyone considers taking a vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter, as sunlight during these months isn’t strong enough for your body to make it. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Some people might need to take other vitamin supplements, but that’s something you should discuss with your doctor so that you can tell exactly what you’re deficient in and exactly how much you should be taking to bring your levels up to scratch. </span></p>

<p class="p1">Ever heard of &#8216;hidden veg&#8217;? It&#8217;s hiding veg in your meals, something that parents often do to get some veg into fussy kids. Whether you&#8217;re 8 or 48, it&#8217;s a good way of getting closer to your 5-a-day without chomping on a raw carrot.</p>
<p>Here are some simple ways of boosting your fruit and veg intake:</p>
<ul>
<li>Add vegetables such as peas, sweetcorn and spinach to rice and pasta dishes.</li>
<li>Keep a bag of frozen fruit in the freezer to add to porridge (you can get bags of frozen strawberries and bananas from Aldi which is perfect for this).</li>
<li>Grate carrot into a bolognese, add heaps of peppers to a chilli and roast butternut squash to add to a lasagne &#8211; these little additions are barely noticeable and the calories are negligible, so win-win.</li>
</ul>
<p>Don&#8217;t forget that tinned and frozen fruit and veg both count towards your 5-a-day and might be easier for you to get at the moment. And if you&#8217;re worried about the nutrients in tinned or frozen veg, they&#8217;re <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/may/01/are-frozen-fruit-and-vegetables-as-good-for-you-as-fresh">just as good as fresh</a>. Plus they last longer, so you won&#8217;t find a bag of green slime that used to be spinach at the back of the fridge in a month&#8217;s time.</p>

It probably sounds a bit counter-productive, as conventional wisdom tells us that we need to eat to fuel our workouts. But people who do fasted cardio swear by it and say that it maximises your fat burn.</span></p></div>

This thinking stems from former competitive bodybuilder turned ‘transformation expert’ Bill Phillips, who published his book <i>Body For Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength</i> in 1999. In it, he recommends exercising first thing in the morning before eating as this way the body draws more heavily on its fat stores for energy.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The rationale was that the lack of food causes your glycogen (stored carbohydrate) levels to fall, forcing your body to start burning your stored fat as fuel for your workout instead. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">He went as far as to say that exercising for 20 minutes after fasting has a greater effect on fat loss than exercising for an hour after eating. Sounds good, right? After all, who wouldn’t want to burn <i>more</i> fat by exercising <i>less</i>?</span></p></div>

					<div class="elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix"><p class="p2"><span class="s1">Since Phillips published his book, there have been several studies published that have looked into this in more detail. </span></p><p class="p2"><span class="s1">Brad Schoenfeld PhD, fitness expert and bodybuilder, has done extensive research into whether fasted cardio is backed by science. He conducted a great <a href="http://www.lookgreatnaked.com/articles/does_cardio_after_an_overnight_fast_maximize_fat_loss.pdf">review of existing literature</a> around the subject which looked at several different studies and concluded that science doesn’t support the theory. </span></p><p class="p2"><span class="s1">He states that “at best, the net effect on fat loss associated with such an approach will be no better than training after meal consumption, and quite possibly it would produce inferior results”. </span></p><p class="p2"><span class="s1">He also points out that training on an empty stomach can make it difficult to perform at your best anyway, whereas studies have shown that a pre-exercise meal allows you to train more intensely, giving a net result of burning a greater number of calories both before and after exercise, which will heighten fat loss. </span></p><p class="p2"><span class="s1">So why does fasted cardio have a good reputation within the fitness community? You need to have been exercising regularly for a while so that you know your limits, your body and how you react to exercise. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Feeling so hungry that you pass out mid-workout is definitely not something you want to do, so if you’re trying it for the first time be prepared to listen to your body and stop if you’re not feeling right. </span></p></div>

If that’s the way you’ve been doing it and it’s working for you, by all means continue. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">However, if you’re stuck in a rut or your weight loss has plateaued, give fasted cardio a try to mix things up a bit. If anything, fasted cardio will at least see you getting up early, getting your workout out of the way and setting you up for the day.</span></p></div>

<p><strong>Improved Muscle Development</strong></p>
<p>As mentioned, the control of the movement is what encourages better muscle development and endurance. Moving too quickly against the resistance offers minimal increases to your muscles and strength.</p>
<p>Resistance bands counter this by providing better resistance both ways when controlled. The execution of the movement is only one point. Controlling the resistance, which is called the eccentric phase, is where all the muscle growth occurs the most.</p>
<p>An example would be performing a resistance band row by attachment to a stable object like a small tree. Execution of the row is pulling the bands towards you, but the control portion is not letting the band sling forward.</p>
<p>Dumbbells can still be controlled in the same manner, although the supporting muscles to control are not used as much. Being active either way is important, but if you can be more effective, then resistance bands are a great choice.</p>
<p><strong>Increased Flexibility and Mobility</strong></p>
<p>There is a large variety of exercises you can perform with resistance bands only. The use of free weight for lots of the exercises is almost meaningless or impossible. The reason for this the way the movement is performed, requiring elasticity over solid weight.</p>
<p>Mobility is having a healthy range of motions with your joints. Flexibility is the elasticity of your skeletal muscles to move across ranges of motion. Both are important for better health and to prevent injuries from occurring from simple tasks such as twisting your body carrying a box.</p>

<p>Resistance bands offer lots of exercise variations as well. You can perform simple exercises like back rows and shoulder presses, or you can even use free weights attached to the bands for extra benefits.</p>
<p>An example of this mixture is a dumbbell squat + resistance bands. Place one side of the band under your feet standing shoulder-width apart.</p>
<p>Take the dumbbell and insert it into the other end of the band, then twist with the band around the handle to stay in place. Holding the ends of the dumbbells, you simply start performing squats.</p>
<p>This extra resistance from the band adds more tension as you come out of the squat, and forces your legs to work harder against the band as you lower into it.</p>
<p>Other exercises are ones that rotate the trunk such as woodchoppers, and the mobility stretches such as front to back shoulder rotations.</p>
<p><strong>Strength Training with Resistance Bands</strong></p>
<p>The following is an easy workout program you can utilize 3-4 days per week. This will focus on the body as a whole opposed to a workout focused on a single muscle group.</p>
<p>Remember, fire through the contraction phase and control through the release phase. That is the best way to use for any movement when not focusing on a large resistance being lifted.</p>
<p><strong>Mobility Warm Up</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Front Pull Apart</strong> – Opens up the chest muscles, brings blood flow to your shoulders and upper back muscles. Improves shoulder range of motion and warm up.</li>
<li><strong>Front to Back Shoulder Rotations</strong> – This helps stretch your chest, shoulder, and back muscles. Mobility improves greatly from these and posture as well.</li>
<li><strong>Single-Leg Hamstring Stretch</strong> – Improves the flexibility of your hamstrings and glutes. Execute dynamically by doing single-leg raise with the band for hip mobility.</li>
<li><strong>Clamshell Exercise</strong> – Improves help mobility and works your abductors, glutes and groin. Very easy to execute with a hip circle instead of a pull-up assist band.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong><br />
Strength and Muscle</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Banded Squats</strong> – Targets your entire lower body, but more specifically, your quads, hips, and glutes get the most attention. A basic essential for a healthy body and strength development for your legs.</li>
<li><strong>Banded RDL</strong> – This is called a Romanian deadlift. The difference is you are not going all the way back to the floor with the resistance, and instead stopping below the knees. Targets your hamstrings and glutes specifically.</li>
<li><strong>Overhead Band Press </strong>– Focuses on your shoulders, triceps, and upper back muscles. A necessary exercise for improving the joint strength and mobility of your shoulders.</li>
<li><strong>Banded Back Rows </strong>– Targets your back, traps, and biceps muscles. This exercise requires the band placed around a sturdy object such as a pole or tree.</li>
</ul>

Studies have found that people who eat breakfast tend to have a lower BMI, but this might be because people who eat breakfast tend to have healthier habits overall.</p><p>This might be down to getting up earlier, being more active, or generally eating well. The NHS sums it up as ‘rather than regularly eating breakfast <em>making</em> you healthy, healthy people are more likely to eat breakfast’.</p><p>It’s also thought that skipping breakfast can throw your body off, and that if you’re missing that early-morning hit of fuel, you’re more likely to try and make up for it later in the day, which can lead to overeating, which will lead to excess weight (as we all know…)</p></div>

Researchers from Cornell University found that participants who skipped breakfast didn’t overeat at lunch or dinner, instead saving an average of 408 calories a day. Another Australian study found that people who skipped breakfast saved an average of 260 calories a day.</p><p>So it’s not necessarily true that you’ll eat everything in sight if you don’t get your bowl of porridge in the AM. Breakfast is not as essential as we once thought it was, and some even think it’s an easy way of cutting calories.</p></div>

If you’re in the habit of getting up early and working out before work, breakfast is a good idea. But if you’re pressed for time or not hungry upon waking, don’t force yourself to eat breakfast.</p><p>Play it by ear – if you’re hungry, eat a balanced breakfast that will set you up well for the day. If you’re not hungry, it’s fine to wait until you are, but just make sure you’re not depriving yourself.</p><p>If you find that you’re snacking on all sorts of crap, or that your other meals are piled high because you’re so hungry, it might be an idea to start eating breakfast to avoid this.</p></div>
