WHAT: The Coming Prosperity: How Entrepreneurs Are Transforming the Global Economy

This talk is about the unparalleled possibilities of now. In our lifetimes, the benefits of four centuries of technological and organizational change are at last reaching a previously excluded global majority. This transformation is creating large-scale opportunities in richer countries like the United States just as in poorer countries now in the ascent.

To capitalize upon the powerful momentum of global progress we need first to overcome outdated narratives of fear and persistent tendencies toward strategic myopia. Yes, humanity faces huge challenges like climate change, water scarcity, and rapid urbanization. Yet each of these challenges presents opportunities. For this reason entrepreneurship is the key to realizing the full potential of the future.

WHO:

Philip Auerswald is an Associate Professor at George Mason University, an adviser to the Clinton Global Initiative, and the founding president of the National Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. He is the author of The Coming Prosperity: How Entrepreneurs Are Transforming the Global Economy (Oxford University Press, 2012) as well numerous other books, reports, and research papers. He is also the co-founder and co-editor of Innovations, a quarterly journal from MIT Press about entrepreneurial solutions to global challenges.

The Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship would like to invite you to join us on our quarterly field trip:

Noon Departure-2:30 pm Return To Campus

Join us for a field trip to the San Jose Tech Shop! Attendees will travel as a group by bus to the downtown San Jose Tech Shop location for a tour, demos, and an informative Q&A session. We will travel as one group via charter bus. A detailed agenda will be distributed to confirmed attendees. Your SCU photo ID will serve as your check in at the bus on the day of the trip.

The TechShop is a playground for creativity, with something for everyone. Part fabrication and prototyping studio, part hacker space, part learning center, the TechShop offers access to over $ 1million worth of professional equipment and software. They also provide comprehensive instruction and expert staff to ensure you have a meaningful and rewarding experience. The facility offers laser cutters, plastics & electronics labs, machine shop, wood shop, metal working shop, textiles department, welding stations, and waterjet cutters. Members have open access to all design software as well, including Autodesk Desing Suite. Huge project areas with large work tables enable you to complete projects and collaborate with others easily. The TechShop offers membership at many levels-including just 1 month-do you have a prototype you need to complete? You can gather all you need and pay for one month to complete your prototype or project! They also offer discount student priced memberships as well.

Andy is the CEO of Algorithms.io, a stealth-mode technology company. Prior to this appointment, he was Vice President of boutique acceleration fund Voivoda, which focused on early-stage B2B technology companies. He has held previous positions as President and CEO of Tracker, Director of Business Development for Carr & Ferrell LLP, and as Senior Associate at The Angels Forum and The Halo Funds, where he was responsible for sourcing and identifying potential investment opportunities in the life sciences, high tech, and consumer product spaces. The Center for Science, Technology & Society would like to invite undergraduate juniors to an information session on applying to the second class of their Global Social Benefit Fellows. The fellowship provides a comprehensive program of mentored, field-based study and research within the Global Social Benefit Incubator's worldwide network of social entrepreneurs. This fellowship is fully funded by a generous donor and combines a 6-7 week summer field experience in the developing world with two quarters of academically-rigorous research. The CSTS promises a richly rewarding yet personally and academically demanding experience-this requires a time-intensive nine-month commitment and is highly competitive. Each fellow will receive a support package to cover all international travel, in-country expenses, research costs and a modest summer stipend.

Students from all disciplines are welcome to apply during the winter of their junior year-the deadline for application is January 23, 2013. Stephen Brodsky, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Engineer specializing in innovation and big data at IBM. His research and projects focus on technology change and entrepreneurial initiatives and has helped technical and business decision makers at organizations worldwide. Currently, Dr. Brodsky is focused on big data with his work looking at the capturing, management and analysis of information for strategic decision making. The School of Engineering has great news to share: Santa Clara University has been selected for the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon to be held in Irvine, California!

Over the next two years, undergraduate students from the School of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, and Leavey School of Business will collaborate (along with peers from the architecture department of the University of San Francisco) to design and build a net-zero energy house for the prestigious international competition. More information in the University press release.

Hearty congratulations to Tim Hight, associate professor of mechanical engineering and faculty project leader, Fr. Jim Reites, associate professor of engineering by courtesy, and the solar decathlon student team who have been working in earnest for the last several months to prepare their proposal which was submitted in November.

I would like to follow up on an email that you received Friday, January 6 to remind you of the upcoming deadline for juniors in your department to apply for the Global Social Benefit Fellowship. The Center for Science, Technology, and Society has launched this opportunity for juniors to work in the field with our network of social entrepreneurs, alumni of our GSBI™. This fellowship will provide your students a terrific opportunity to learn how technology is benefitting humanity through social entrepreneurship.

The Global Social Benefit Fellowship integrates community based learning and research. The research can be applied toward a fellow's senior thesis or capstone project. The fellowship is open to juniors in all majors. It requires a sustained, year-long commitment, roughly equivalent to a minor.

Fellows will:

take a social entrepreneurship course in the spring of their junior year;
spend about 5 weeks during the summer in the field with one of our partner organizations;
volunteer on campus in August with our GSBI program for social entrepreneurs; and
engage in research and reflection through a course in the fall of senior year.

The deadline is January 26, 2012, and we encourage you to recommend your best students for this fellowship and have them attend one of the three Student Information Sessions scheduled as follows:
