<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 8
–>

Some people love squirrels, while others hate them. Haters like to call them “tree rats.” Squirrel lovers may buy corn for them and set up feeding stations.

My views on them depended on the situation. If they were emptying my bird feeders, I saw them as pesky pilferers. If they were performing funny antics in a park, I found them cute. I have hunted and eaten them, though that was a number of years ago.

I never thought I would miss them and long for their company, until I did. I had moved to the Luray bottoms in Chester County and was there for several months when it dawned on me that I had seen no squirrels. Even when I searched the bare trees in the winter woods for squirrel nests, I could find no trace. I lived there for about eight years and though I saw the occasional fox squirrel, it was rare, even exciting.

It wasn’t lack of food or habitat, but I speculated that it might be that the rich bottomlands harbored a plentitude of snakes, and could imagine that baby squirrels would make a delicious meal. I have seen incredible climbing feats performed by snakes. Hawks and owls were abundant as well. I thought it might have something to do with swampland habitat that I could not quite pin down.

Now I live in hilly country, and I still find it uncommon to see a squirrel or a squirrel nest. I’ve asked wildlife experts and haven’t gotten a satisfactory answer about their low numbers. One proposed a theory that squirrel populations have become more urban. People may provide some protection from their primary predators.

Maybe so, but when I lived in rural settings south of Jackson and south of Lexington, squirrels were plentiful enough to be annoying. My dogs had become accustomed to me shouting, “Squirrel on the feeders!” and would leap to their feet in a mad rush for the dog door to give chase. If we were in the woods and I announced, “Squirrel!” every pair of canine eyes would scan the treetops. My current dog family has no grasp of the word “squirrel.”

In reading about the squirrel life cycle, I find they have fewer babies (called kittens) than I would have imagined. A litter will usually be two, three or four squirrels, and they have two litters per year — one in late winter, and the second in late summer. The mother squirrel prefers a tree cavity for her den but may make a warm bulky nest of twigs and leaves, lined with grass, in a crotch of large tree limbs. A warm attic will work, too, as many annoyed humans may attest, as will a birdhouse.

The kittens, born naked and blind, are protected by their mother for only 10 to 12 weeks. Most squirrel babies do not survive their first year.

By James DrakeLast week I was contacted by a reader about an injured squirrel.

While going for a walk with her little children, this woman witnessed an adult squirrel fall out of a tree.

The squirrel was obviously injured and probably had a broken rear leg, this lady said.

What should she do?

Good question. I know she wasnt interested in my favorite squirrel pie recipe.

First and foremost, any wild critter should be living its life in the wild.

In fact, its illegal to make a pet out of a squirrel, goldfinch, black snake, terrapin or any other wild animal. Almost always, the best advice is to leave wild animals alone.

Over the next few months, many wild babies are going to be born.

If you find a baby bird that fell out of its nest, sure you can put it back in. If you see a newborn fawn abandoned in a field, leave it alone. Most likely, its mother left it hidden there and it doesnt need a bit of your help.

But, sometimes you really might discover a creature that is in need of assistance, just like a squirrel that fell from a tree and broke its leg, and there are people out there who have the proper training to care, treat and then return these animals to their proper homes.

Maryland has a network of a few dozen wildlife rehabilitators throughout the state who are licensed and trained to take in orphaned, sick and injured wild critters with the purpose of releasing them, when theyre ready, back into the natural and wild places from where they came.

We even have a few here in Southern Maryland.

Probably the very first thing you ought to do with any animal you think truly needs your help is to call the toll-free human/animal/conflict line at 877-463-6497 and speak to a biologist and get some expert advice on what to do.

Thats also the number to call if you have raccoons in the attic or a Gila monster and three Burmese pythons have just moved in to live under your back deck, for they also can provide you with a list of licensed trappers.

Another important rule to remember is never move a wild animal until you are absolutely certain it really needs your help. Keep in mind, too, rabies is a real threat from many wild animals. Squirrels are probably safe, but many others are not.

Google Maryland Wildlife Rehabilitators and youll quickly find a link at Marylands Department of Natural Resources that lists wildlife rehabbers by county and what animals they accept such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians and the like.

Many veterinarians also triage wild animals, but up front, youd be well advised to discuss the fee structure with them first.

Happy ending: That injured squirrel, on its own, was able to climb back up the tree on a sore, not broken, leg.

Mary Goldie at Marylands DNR issues permits to license wildlife rehabilitators throughout the state. If youre interested, she would be a good place to start if youre thinking of becoming a wildlife rehabber yourself. Call Goldie at 410-260-8546.

There are also two classes coming up in Lusby from 9 a.m. to noon March 3 and April 7 where you can learn all about rescuing wild animals and becoming a licensed rehabilitator in Maryland.

The cost to attend is $20. Call 301-922-4325 or 410-326-0937 to register.

This isnt an easy hobby or pastime although it certainly could be most gratifying.

Very basically, you first become an apprentice rehabilitator and must work 200 hours within two years, during spring, summer, fall and winter, with a master rehabilitator and get signed off on an extensive skills checklist.

Youll also need a fair bit of space for indoor and outdoor cages and a place for a soft release area where the wild animals are placed before they are finally let go to resume their lives in a natural world.

Youll also want to know a friendly veterinarian who is willing to work with you, and maybe at your center, once youre fully licensed.

Give it some thought; the rewards could be priceless.

Fishing updateMy good friend and master angler Gene Mueller really got into some fine yellow perch action a few days ago on the Patuxent River about halfway between Jug Bay and Hills Bridge.

There were four men in this particular fishing party and everyone took home enough nice ring perch for a true family feast. Besides that, they hooked, landed and released several dozen more.

It didnt seem to matter if the bait was a live minnow or an imitation, the perch were hungry and most willing to cooperate.

You can read more about it and see the pictures at www.genemuellerfishing.com.

Also up in Prince Georges County, Allen Pond, located near the U.S. 301 and U.S. 50 intersection, already has received nearly 1,000 trout for a preseason stocking.

A few yellow perch have started showing up at Charles County’s Allens Fresh but you sometimes have to work hard to get a bite. Some large females are found in the deep hole in an area known as The Cedars.

Anglers Night OutThe Patuxent River Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association of Maryland will host its third Anglers Night Out for this winter from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Ruddy Duck Brewery & Grill in Dowell.

The Ruddy Duck is located in southern Calvert County, almost to Solomons Island, at the intersection of Dowell Road and H.G. Trueman Road (Route 765). Its located about a mile and a half north of the big bridge.

At this upcoming meeting, the movie Tarpon will be featured tracing the development of the tarpon fishery and highlight some of the early tarpon anglers in colorful scenes of 1970s Key West.

The meeting is free and open to the public. You dont need to be a member of CCAMD to feel welcome.

Everyone also can sample this part is at your expense now the Ruddy Ducks menu and choose from its handcrafted brews.

Concerns over killing bald eagles and insect-eating bats might have derailed plans for a 78-megawatt wind farm in rural Goodhue County.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission on Thursday denied a plan submitted by AWA Goodhue Wind Project to monitor and protect the eagles and bats around the proposed 32,700-acre wind farm site in southeast Minnesota.

The project involves building 50 turbines in an area that includes the Mississippi Flyway, a wide corridor used by migrating birds. Its power would be sold to Minneapolis-based Xcel Energy.

Project opponents, organized as the Coalition for Sensible Siting, called it a victory of a cherished national symbol over a project backed by Texas oil and gas billionaire T. Boone

Pickens, who also supports wind power. AWA Goodhue was formed by Mesa Power Group, which Pickens founded.

“In this political climate, I don’t think the American public is ready to watch Minnesota’s nesting bald eagles pay for a Texas billionaire,” said Mary Hartman, a spokeswoman for the coalition.

The project’s developers need an approved Avian and Bat Protection Plan before they can begin construction of the project, scheduled for this summer. The project already has use and site permits from the commission.

The PUC denial vote was 2-1, but all three commissioners present Thursday said the plan was inadequate.

“I think this plan can be improved,” said PUC Chairman David Boyd, who cast the no vote, saying he preferred the plan

be delayed.

Christy Brusven, an attorney representing AWA Goodhue, told the commissioners that AWA Goodhue has applied to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a permit that would allow the wind farm to kill no more than about one eagle about every three years.

If approved, it would be the first such permit for bald eagles obtained by a wind farm in the country.

“It is not our intent to have a negative impact on birds and bats in the area, and it certainly is not our intent to kill bald eagles,” she told the commissioners.

But Commissioner J. Dennis O’Brien compared the permit to a duck hunting license, calling it “a license to kill.”

Brusven disagreed, saying turbines might kill eagles, but would not do so on purpose.

“It’s for the risk of a take that’s unavoidable, not that it’s inevitable,” she said.

Brusven had no comment after the vote.

The project has the cooperation of residents on whose land the turbines would be sited, but it has run into stiff opposition for several years from some neighbors.

The Coalition for Sensible Siting said the protection plan vastly underestimates the number of eagle nests and was missing too much monitoring data on bats.

Hartman, who lives in Rochester, said the

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has confirmed 13 bald eagle nests found by residents within a buffer zone around the turbine sites.

The equipment to monitor bats only recorded information on the bats’ whereabouts about half of the time, she added.

The developers acknowledged a handful of nests last year, but have suggested that additional eagles may have been attracted to the area by “baiting” with dead livestock or roadkill – a charge that opponents belittled Thursday.

The bat monitors did malfunction but the developers believe they still collected enough information, Brusven said.

Hartman said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is scheduled to visit the area March 16 to confirm four additional eagle nests spotted by residents that have not yet been identified by the DNR.

AWA Goodhue’s protection plan was designed to hide the number of eagles and bats, Hartman said before the hearing.

“They want to sterilize the area to make it hospitable to turbines and not anything else,” she said.

The commission’s denial puts the developers in a bind, Brusven told the board.

The Fish and Wildlife Service wants an approved Avian and Bat Protection Plan before it approves a take permit, she told them.

AWA Goodhue can resubmit another protection plan to the PUC, but it may be fighting the calendar.

If the project cannot start producing power by the end of this year, it will lose the ability to claim a valuable federal production tax credit that expires on Dec. 31 unless extended by Congress.

Kristi Rosenquist, 48, a Zumbrota Township resident who submitted to the commission photos of eagles and their nests on her property, said the denial puts the project’s finances in jeopardy. It may not be finished in time to qualify for the expiring tax credits, she said.

Hartman was less sure.

“We’re not finished until this project is sited appropriately or until it goes away,” she said.

Movie stars will soon be walking the red carpet to win (or lose) Academy Awards. But why should humans have all the fun? We’ve translated Oscar categories into superlatives for the furry animals, creepy insects and other organisms that share our planet. Who will win best costume? What about best makeup? Read on for our animal “celebrity” winners.

	Best Visual Effects

This award goes to the animal that makes the biggest spectacle of itself with bioluminescence or other impressive talents.

Nominees: The glowing squid Taningia danae; the toothy and luminous Blackdragon fish; and the amazing transparent octopus Japetella heathi.

And the winner is… Japetella heathi. This deep-sea octopus possesses the amazing ability to switch from transparent to opaque and back again. In regular conditions, the octopuses are see-through, perhaps to prevent themselves as being seen as a dark silhouette against the ocean surface. But when bioluminescent light hits them, they instantaneously become pigmented, preventing a mirror-like glare from alerting potential predators to their existence. Well-played, J. heathi. Please limit your acceptance speech to 45 seconds.

	Best Sound Mixing

This technical prize goes to the animal that really brings it in the sound department.

Nominees: The water boatman, for its incredibly loud genitals; the rumbling California mantis shrimp; and the Emei music frog, for her beautiful love songs.

And the winner is … The water boatman. This itsy-bitsy insect is the loudest creature on Earth relative to body size, and boy does he pull it off in the weirdest way. Male water boatman rub their genitals against ridges on their bodies to produce mating songs that rival in loudness listening to an orchestra from the front-row seat. Truly an award-winning feat.

	Best Sound Editing

This award goes to the animal with the all-around coolest call.

Nominees: Barking piranhas, for their species-bending approach to communication; Dolphins sleep-talking in foreign tongues; and the lion, for its grating, effortless roar.

And the winner is … the dolphin. These marine mammals go the extra mile by mimicking the sounds of other species. Recently, a group of captive dolphins in France was caught sleep-talking in the language of whales — a language they’d only heard played on recordings at their aquatic theme park home. We assume they’re getting into Method acting.

	Best Music

This award goes to the animal with the most melodious call.

Nominees: The Philippine tarsier (we’re sure its ultrasonic calls sound pleasant to its own kind); the crooning Emei music frog; and the humpback whale.

And the winner is … the humpback whale. It’s a tough call, but the haunting music of humpback whales takes the Animal Academy Award. The whales are amazingly diverse, with different populations singing distinct songs. The songs also follow grammatical rules to convey information.

	Best Makeup

This award goes to the creature that can best alter its appearance to blend in.

Nominees: The black-marbled jawfish, for its ability to mimic an octopus that mimics a fish; the land snail Napaeus barquini, for its do-it-yourself application of camouflaging lichen; and the cuttlefish, which can mimic both the color and the texture of its surroundings.

And the winner is … the black-marbled jawfish. We love the multidimensional portrayal of a mimic mimicking a mimic. And whose heart wouldn’t be melted by the plucky little underdog jawfish finding a way to venture out of his burrow without fear of predators?

	Best Costume Design

This award goes to the flashiest, most colorful animal around.

Nominees: The poison dart frog, which has evolved brilliant neon skin to warn predators of its toxicity; the peacock, for reasons both obvious and iridescent; and the harlequin shrimp, for its clownlike colors and extra frills.

And the winner is … the harlequin shrimp. These pretty predators are popular for aquarium enthusiasts, but their diet makes keeping them in captivity tricky: The shrimp eat only starfish. And they eat them alive. Sometimes over a period of weeks. Let’s move on to the next category, shall we?

	Best Supporting Actor/Actress

This award goes to the animal with the weirdest group behavior.

Nominees: Guppies, for their Jerry-Springer-worthy “girl fights” over males; diving beetle sperm (yes, we know, technically not an animal!), for their creepy ability to join together to navigate the female reproductive tract; timber rattlesnakes, for their heretofore unknown snuggly behavior.

And the winner is … snuggly snakes. Rattlesnakes seem like the standoffish sort, but new research suggests that they’re actually more sociable than expected, clustering with their kin. Rattlesnake family reunion, anyone?

	Best Actor

This prize is for the best male mating display.

Nominees: The always over-the-top peacock, for his garish feather displays; the hilarious houbara bustard, for their wild mating runs, which have them flinging a shield of white feathers over their faces and scampering around blindly; and the marvelous Spatuletail hummingbird, which whirls its long tail in circles to impress the ladies.

And the winner is … the houbara bustard. Tough competition for this one, and the Animal Academy doesn’t usually reward comedy, but the houbara bustard gives it his all for this win. Plus chest features are totally in this year.

	Best Actress

Though females aren’t usually as flashy as males in the wild, this award goes to the female animal that puts on the best mating display.

Nominees: Female butterflies, which, if raised in cool temperatures, take it upon themselves to pursue males for mates; Wilson’s Phalaropes, which switch the usual sex roles and put on flashy courtship displays to snag guys; and the bonobo, for whom sex is an anything-goes group activity.

And the winner is … the Wilson’s Pharlarope. Females in this species of shorebird show up at breeding grounds first and puff up their feathers to lure in mates. Once they snag a guy, they defend him zealously, protecting a territory around the nest where he cares for their babies.

	Best Picture

The most prestigious award of the bunch goes to the creature that’s provided the wildest story of the year.

Nominees: Zombie ants, who capitalize on zombie-mania when attacked by a mind-controlling fungus; the glowing millipedes of the genus Mytoxia, who sweat cyanide to ward off predators; and the Cyclops shark, a malformed dusky fetus whose look mixes grotesque and cute in equal measure.

And the winner is … the Cyclops shark. Millipedes and ants are forever, but this weird fetus is one-of-a-kind, or at least very rare. Considering that the fetal shark is very unlikely to have survived outside the womb, the least we can do is offer it a nice posthumous statuette — and, of course, the obligatory Academy Award memorial reel.

Actually, democracy, in the sense of collective decisions based on
the motivations of the majority, guides the social interactions and
group behavior of many species from honey bees to
chimpanzees.

Though they have a queen, honey bees don’t live in a
monarchy.

“There is no social hierarchy in a bee colony,” said Brian Johnson,
a professor of entomology at the University of California at Davis
told Discovery News. “The queen is just an egg laying machine. She
is more important than the average worker to colony survival, but
she is not a governor in any sense of the word.”

Though there is no formal voting process, the hive acts according
to the information gathered by the majority of hive members.

“This is crucial for bees because they have limited information at
the individual level and can only make good decisions when they
pool their information-gathering and processing skills,” Johnson
said.

Calling bee social behavior, “democracy” or even saying that they
make decisions runs the risk of anthropomorphism, or assigning
human qualities to animals, said Norman Gary, Professor Emeritus in
entomology at UC Davis.

“Decision making requires awareness of options and insects don’t
have that,” said Gary in an interview. “The bees are programmed to
go out and react to stimuli.”

Bees may not have developed a hive republic, but is there a deer
democracy governing the forests?

“In red deer, it is in the interest of group members to stay
together (e.g., in order to detect predators better),” Larissa
Conradt of the University of Sussex told Discovery News.
“Therefore, individuals benefit if they synchronize their
activities and movements, and they have to decide such things
collectively.”

Honey bees share the collective goal of hive survival at the
expense of the individual, but life is not so simple for red deer
groups, said Conradt. Individual deer have different physiological
needs, and not every herd movement will benefit each
individual.

“In such circumstances, there is a conflict of interest, and
individuals pay a ‘cost’ when synchronizing (they might forgo their
own optimal activity in order to stay with the group),” said
Conradt.

So, like members of a political party who don’t agree with
everything their candidate says, yet vote for him anyway, red deer
stick with the herd because it’s better than being abandoned.
Human’s closest relative, the chimpanzee, takes decision making
beyond the party politics of the deer-mocracy.

“I describe in Chimpanzee Politics how the alpha male
needs broad support to reach the top spot,” Frans de Waal, Director
of the Living Links Center at the Yerkes Primate Center and
psychology professor at Emory University. “He needs some close
allies and he needs many group members to be on his side.”

Although chimpanzee strong men can rise to power, they often become
bullies and are eventually deposed and exiled or even killed. Chimp
consensus builders form more stable social structures by offering
perks to supporters.

“The majority of alpha males seems rather of the supported type,
may be quite small (although not too small or unhealthy), and
spends a lot of time grooming allies, sharing meat or females with
them, and other ways of keeping them on his side,” de Waal
said.

“This sounds democratic to me, as well as the fact that the group
puts limits on alpha behavior,” said de Waal. “For example if the
alpha male attacks a juvenile using his canine teeth, the group may
revolt, thus showing the limits of alpha’s power.”

Human democracy may have analogues in the natural world, but no
other animal has taken collective decision making as far as
humans.

“One big difference between collective decision making between
humans and animals is deliberation,” said Conradt. “Human can
discuss issues prior to making collective decisions in a
sophisticated manner that is not open to animals.”

For all our complexity, humans make decisions using brains evolved
through eons of survival in the natural world.

Instinctual reactions to stimuli guide human behavior more than
many appreciate, Gary said.

“People are more like insects than insects are like people,” Gary
said.

Democracy, as a political system, seems to grow from instincts
inherited from our ape ancestors, which were forged by ages of
natural selection for optimized group decision making.

When her teenage son caught her having sex with his 15-year-old friend and reported the incident to school officials, Terri Mezzatesta came up with a wild story, police said.

Mezzatesta, who is 5-foot-9 and 260 pounds, claimed she was passed out drunk and unaware that the 15-year-old was having sex with her, police said.

But cops didn’t buy it because according to her 14-year-old son – who’d allegedly heard his mother say “right there baby” during the act – it was consensual.

Mezzatesta, 34, waived her preliminary hearing Tuesday on statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors and related charges.

Court documents of Mezzatesta’s alleged crimes tell a sordid tale that includes wine coolers, pot and sexting.

On Nov. 12, the young boy Mezzatesta allegedly had sex with had come to her Upper Chichester home to hang out with his friend. According to interviews with that boy, police said Mezzatesta smoked marijuana with him and her son for about two hours before her son passed out in his bedroom.

The victim said that he and Mezzatesta then watched television in the living room and she bought him wine coolers, according to police.

While on the couch, Mezzatesta allegedly asked the boy if she could perform oral sex on him, an offer he accepted.

One thing led to another and the boy engaged in intercourse with Mezzatesta, during which she yelled the explicit exclamations, police said. That awoke her son, who came in to the living room and allegedly saw an image he will probably never forget.

The son then punched his friend in the face and told him to leave. The boy did so, but he came back to Mezzatesta’s house later that night and was allowed to stay.

Because the victim’s phone was broken, Mezzatesta’s son allowed him to borrow his phone for several days after the incident, police said. When Mezzatesta’s son got his phone back, he saw sexual text messages between his friend and his mother, according to court documents.

That’s when he reported the incident to school officials and police were called in to investigate.

Mezzatesta allegedly told police that she’d had five “mixed vodka” drinks that night, passed out on the couch and awoke to her son’s friend on top of her.

Police didn’t buy it.

Local artist Annerose Georgeson captures a side of the Nechako region many people may not have seen. She gets into the quiet and forgotten spots, takes in the natural scene on an intimate level and then turns those unique perspectives into art.

Georgeson is presently showing a new collection of paintings at Prince George’s Two Rivers Gallery called Field Notes.

She says the paintings in the Field Notes collection are about observing a place over a long period of time.

“I’ve lived in the same place a long time, and when you visit the same locations over and over, you see how they’ve changed,” Georgeson said.

She said a lot of the inspiration for the works comes from how the places recover from what seem like catastrophic events that take a toll on the natural surroundings.

“Places have endured lots of changes in the time I’ve been here - logging, forest fires, Mountain pine beetle … also farming changes land a lot,” Georgeson said, “and yet little trees keep growing, and nature can be quite resilient.”

She explained how the 2007 Kenny Dam fire was really huge and a lot of people fought that fire all sumer, but now, only a few years later she sees places where it has begun to grow back.

“Among the charred stems of old trees, a carpet of small green trees is coming up everywhere,” Georgeson observed.

She mentions the Greer Creek fire last year had places that aren’t recovering because it was so hot and fierce, but that still some scorched patches have spots that are greening up.

“Seven months later it was full of fireweed … some growth is almost immediate,” Georgeson observed.

That’s why her latest collection, Field Notes is about regeneration against a backdrop of death.

“It’s about unbelievable growth, and how hugely inspiring it is to see that colour contrast – it just smacks you,” Georgeson said with enthusiasm.

Another way this contrast effect can be seen, she shared, “is the regular patterns of trees against the snow.”

Georgeson has been painting landscapes for a few years now. She notes it’s is a big change from the abstract paintings she had been working on, though many of those were inspired by the natural world. For instance in some of the abstract paintings, what seem like birds convening on a sky, then upon reflection reveal themselves to be outlines of pine cone segments.

Georgeson is also going to give a class in March and a talk at College of New Caledonia to students of fine arts and the general public on the pros and cons of being an artist working in the North.

“Northern artists have each developed a unique style,” Georgeson said, “their styles are very distinct and that is a good thing.”

Being rural and in the North can come with real advantages and disadvantages, she said, noting northern artists often work in isolation and yet are very supportive of one another.

A few years back, Georgeson curated and travelled with a collection of works united in theme by the Mountain pine beetle. The works in various mediums had been created by a variety of artists from the Central Interior.

The collection was very diverse and included poems along with visual art, and featured works of mature artists as well as school children.

Georgeson names B.C. artists Jack Shadbolt as being an influence for her, along with Arnold Shives, whose use of pattern she notes has affected her artistic point of view. She presently works out of a studio in the Vanderhoof campus of the College of New Caledonia.

Georgeson’s Field Notes collection will be showing at Two Rivers Gallery in Prince George until the end of March. She noted the gallery admission is free on Thursdays.

CEBU CITY—A 70-year-old man in a mountain village here died in a fire that he started to stop wasps from building a nest in his house, authorities said.

Alfonso Lopez, who suffered severe burns, was trying to drive away wasps that were building a nest in his house in Barangay Babag which were made of light materials.

According to Timoteo Gabisay, village councilor, Lopez was alone at home when he lit a pile of leaves hoping that the smoke from the burning leaves would drive the wasps away.

The wasps had been building a nest on a bamboo wall of the house. The fire that Lopez started, however, grew and started to burn the wall, according to Gabisay.

Lopez tried to put the fire out as neighbors shouted at him urging him to flee his burning house.

The 70-year-old man, however, didn’t immediately flee as he tried to carry food with him.

Lopez was found lying on his stomach with severe burns on the back just outside his burned house.

The village was so remote that firemen failed to reach the burning house hours after the fire started.

Gabisay said he believed Lopez, who was known to have difficulty walking as a result of old age, tripped on his way out of his burning house.

Gabisay quoted one of Lopez’s son, Rizaldy, as saying the P23,000 Lopez was saving was burned, too.

The city has been hit by a series of fires in recent days, mostly razing poor communities.

Millions of pesos have been lost in property value in the fires, which also kept city officials busy dealing with resettlement concerns.
