Accused in previous seasons by both Wenger and Mourhino of not awarding penalties at Old Trafford, officials must surely dread the call to officiate at a big game at Old Trafford.

Still, as a Manchester United fan I’ll take that any day! Last night saw Manchester United beat Celtic 3-0 to remain top of their qualifying league for the Champions League. Two goals from Berbatov (who has now scored five goals for Man Utd in his last four games) and one from Rooney who is also on top form this season, having scored six goals in his last seven club and country games.

The controversy of the evening (and is there ever a match at Old Trafford where there isn’t?) was over the two goals by Berbatov - was he offside or wasn’t he?

If I am being absolutely honest, yes he was - on both occasions - however, the linesman missed it both times and the goals stick.

So Manchester United stay joint top of their qualifying group however Celtic look increasingly unlikely to make it through, having secured only 1 point from 3 games.

Not a good day to be a Scot - maybe a worse one to be a linesman!

Long story short, our five-aside team has recently expanded into a full 11 aside and we have migrated outside to the all-weather pitches in winter and grass in summer so I thought I’d treat myself to two new pairs of boots. A recovered Cristiano Ronaldo started for Manchester United and marked his return in the 25th minute of the match. From that point, United dominated the match and two late goals from Nani and Giggs sealed the result and saw Manchester United through to the Carling Cup 4th round. The result was marred by a seemingly very nasty injury sustained by Rodrigo Possebon after a horrific tackle from Emanuel Pogatetez who was red carded for the incident. Possebon was stretchered from the pitch and is currently receiving treatment.

However, after United’s shaky start to this season, with defeat at Anfield and a draw at Stamford Bridge, I’m not so sure. Ferguson is likely to field a number of younger players tonight as he likes to use matches like this to build up experience however United need to make sure that they take nothing for granted tonight despite the fact that at the last meeting between the two clubs, the end-game score card was 4-1 in Manchester United’s favour.

With this being a Cup Match, Ferguson will be unlikely to reveal his tem selection until just prior to the match however he has promised a mixture of old and new players.

Injury-wise, van der Sar is likely to be rested after picking up a knee injury against Chelsea last Sunday. Equally, Ferguson is unlikely to risk key players like Rooney and Ronaldo picking up any injuries that might affect United’s League performances.

Manchester United took the lead after 18 minutes when Ji-Sung Park took advantage of Chelsea keeper Petr Cech’s fumbled catch of Dimitar Berbatov’s shot.

United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, left both Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez on the substitutes bench, opting to start with Berbatov partnering Wayne Rooney upfront. Both teams started strong with United’s Darren Fletcher’s shot going wide early on in the match. Joe Cole had a similar chance for Chelsea after only 8 minutes, only to shoot wide of the posts.

United keeper, Van der Sar, continued his shaky start to the start of this season and, after sustaining a knee injury in a clash with Florent Malouda, was replaced after half an hour by Tomasz Kuszczak.

By the end of the match, Manchester United had had an incredible seven players booked by referee Mike Riley and will now face a Football Association investigation. United’s manager, Ferguson, was predictably coy about the bookings saying,

“It was a competitive game but I did not think there was one bad tackle in it. People are saying what is going on here but it is difficult to say anything about the referee. I do not want to get involved.”.

Their league rivals Chelsea, on the other hand, have three wins and a draw under their belt and are currently top of the Barclays Premier League tables, 6 points (and one game) ahead of Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson will not want to see Chelsea extend their lead any further this weekend however will his team be ready for the head to head at Stamford Bridge this Sunday?

Even this early in the season, Manchester United are troubled by suspensions and injury problems. United reserve keeper, Ben Foster, is among a number of United players unavailable through injury, having injured his ankle in a reserve match against Blackburn. In addition, United center back Nemanja Vidic is suspended, leaving Ferguson unsure how to plug the gap at the back. One possibility is to move Wes Brown from right back into a more central role and to use Gary Neville out right however Neville is only just back from practically a year off competitive football through his own ankle injury problems.

One spark of good news is the early return to fitness of Christian Ronaldo who came on against Villarreal after 60 mins and added a real psychological advantage to United in the last third of the match.

Chelsea go into Sunday’s match unbeaten in 25 Premier League matches whereas Manchester United go into the game with the dubious honour of being the Premiership team that has scored the fewest goals this season.

With several key players out due to either injury or suspension, United did start the match with Christiano Ronaldo on the bench, having seemed to be recovered from his ankle operation in the summer.

It was Ronaldo who, perhaps, created United’s best chance of the evening, crossing to Jonny Evans whose header hit the post. United were also denied a clear penalty when Villarreal’s Joan Capdevila brought down Ji-Sung Park. German referee Wolfgang Stark saw differently and dismissed all shouts for a penalty - a brave man indeed at Old Trafford!

Villarreal seemed happy to cruise through their away leg, content to leave Old Trafford at 0-0. They did have a few sparkling moments in the match, most notably when Franco flicked Lopez’s cross, beating van der Sar, only to be denied by the post.
