Stereo Tracks

You can now pan your tracks. Compatible devices : iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad 1 and newer.

MIDI Controllers

Record, Play/Pause and Stop can be triggered by a MIDI controller through Core MIDI.

2 Input Channels

Record channel 1 or 2, both simultaneously or as a stereo source. Require an audio device that provides 2 input channels such as the Alesis iO Dock.

Goodies

- Restart your loop instead of stopping it with the 3 fingers tap gesture.
- Quantize mute a recording track to silence it when the recording stops.
- Short fade in / out of the recording for seamless loops.

• Manage input channels

If you have a 2 input channels audio device connected to your iDevice, you can configure if these channels are L and R for stereo (1 x Stereo) or 2 independent mono channels (2 x Mono). The setting is in Menu -> Options -> Inputs Configuration.

If you choose the 2 x Mono option, EDL will record channel 1 by default. You can record channel 1 and channel 2 at the same time on 2 adjacent tracks by sliding one finger from track X to track X+1. You can record on channel 2 only by sliding from track X to track X+1 then back from track X+1 to track X without pulling your finger off the screen.

A highly recommended device that provide 2 input channels on an iPad is the Alesis iO Dock, but you can also use a class compliant USB audio interface connected through the Camera Connection Kit.

• Configure MIDI controllers

In Tools -> MIDI Mapping you can associate Actions (Play/Pause, Stop, Record) with MIDI Messages :

1) Tap “Add New Action”
2) Tap “Capture New MIDI Messages”
3) Press the desired footswitch/button/key on your MIDI device
4) Tap “Stop Capturing MIDI Messages”

The Record Action will act following this priority order :

1) Record on armed track
2) Un-suspend chained recording
3) Record on pending recording track
4) Stop recording
5) Record on the first empty track

You can plug an USB-MIDI interface or an USB-MIDI footswitch like the Logidy UMI3 in an iPad through a Camera Connection Kit, or use the integrated footswitch input of an Alesis iO Dock.

Overdub Recording

You can now choose your recording mode between Overdub and Replace (the previous behavior).

Chained Recording

A chain of tracks can now be set as “quantized recording”.

Usability tweaks

Tappable square zone at each end of a track :
- If pending recording, it toggles between recording modes
- If recording, it toggles recording quantization
- If playing, it toggles quantized mute

If recording your first track from an empty loop, tapping an another one will set the loop length and start recording from beginning.

Quantized mute and record

… has been approved by Apple !

Quite important features have been added, here they are :

Audio latency compensation

You will not have any excuse for being offbeat anymore. Precision is under the millisecond.

Sonoma and General/Intua Pasteboard

You can copy from and paste to Everyday Looper. Nice for making a beat in Beatmaker (or hopefully soon NanoStudio) and layering tracks over it in Everyday Looper for example.

Mute function

More powerful that it seems at first glance because it’s quantizable to loop (as recording is). In the above picture, you can see that Track 3 is muted and will be unmuted on next loop, whereas Track 4 is unmuted and will be muted on next loop. Nice for toggling between a verse track and a chorus track, while keeping your hands free for recording another track at the same time.

iOS 4 and iPhone 4 compatibility

Everyday Looper will now continue to play in the background, if your device supports it. You can then use another music app for jamming on top of your loop. Fast app switching, retina display support and nicer anti-aliased waveforms come in the compatibility package too.

Iceland

It’s time for me to take some (deserved ^^ ?) vacations in Iceland . For the next weeks I will be offline, so don’t worry if I don’t answer to your e-mails or your posts on the forum immediately, I’ll handle all of them when I come back in early august.

Good news is that I’ve been working on the next update of Everyday Looper. It’s not finished, I still have some polish and tuning to do, but I can already tell you the 3 main features that will be included :

• Audio latency compensation
• Sonoma and General/Intua pasteboard (MAPI 1.1)
• Mute function, optionally quantizable to loop

In addition to that there will be support for iOS4 fast switch + background playback and retina display.

So I wish you all good vacations if you’ve some planned and see you in a couple of weeks !

Merging Track 1 Into Track 3

We are back with a new version of our dear looper !

It’s already live on the AppStore, here as usual.

But what’s new in this version ? Something that some of you wanted deeply (yes, I know that, because you told me ^^) : Track Merging. And it’s done in the way we always do things, it’s a no-brainer. No need to go back to the menu or whatever, just Tap and Hold a track, drag it to it’s destination, and it’ll merge in real-time !

We also have added the same limiter that we use for the main output, with tweaked settings, in the merge algorithm. So you can stack up quite a big number of tracks before saturation.

By the way, we now have a Twitter account : MancingDols so you can stay updated on a “micro-blog” basis. The blog is now 2.0 enabled too, you can tweet or “facebookise” with a click, put it to good use .

Our mail and forum are always open as usual, for all that you have to say to us.

Previously, new apps introduction as well as updates of existing ones put them on top of this list (if you followed a little trick I missed on lauch of Everyday Looper). Now only new apps will benefit of this increased visibility, updates are just ignored.

As often, Apple didn’t communicate about the reasons, nor did they confirm the change itself. But we can always try to guess !

When rules exist, and financial benefit is involved, we can always count on “creative use” of those rules to maximize profit. In this case, some developers were submitting updates to their apps every two weeks, with various actual changes .

That was legal but had two major down-side : the release date page was more and more useless to discover real new things, and all these updates had to be reviewed by the apple staff, adding eggs in a already full basket and therefor making the approval process longer for everyone.

So should be seen as a nice move for all of us ?

Well… Not for ALL of us.

A side effect is that it will now be more interesting, regarding the sale boost provided by appearing on top of the release date page, to create multiple, short dev cycle apps rather than a few ones and continually add features to them.

Most of us, music creation app developer, fall in the second category. Small ones as big ones. So I hope Apple will do some little aiming adjustment, by, for example, allowing only one update every two month to appear on this page.

One thing that’s worth noting is that the first category seems to best describe our brother AppStore category, the photography one. There is some interesting things to say about that, but it’s a little bit off-topic, I will probably make another post about it sometime.

All in all, it’s not a deal-killer, but a move that don’t go in our direction. Regarding my personal plans on Everyday Looper, it doesn’t change them. I want to make this app a long-distance runner, and I will. Even if it’s “marketingly” harder than planned.

So I’m going back to code, have fun with all the feature-full music apps we already have on the app store, and bet it will continue this way !

Update : Was just strolling around the net and fell on this brilliant post by Marco Arment. The sort of post that acts as an Harry Potter spell that would instantly, alphabetically, sort all of the books of a library held by a dyslexic librarian.

If you read it, and I encourage you to do so if you are interested in understanding the AppStore alchemy, the (side?) effect of Apple move on the Release Date page is to favor AppStore A over AppStore B. But as apps from the AppStore B don’t heavily rely on these AppStore marketing features, it’s definitely not a deal-killer. And now that I know that Everyday Looper is part of AppStore B, it should prevent me from putting efforts in the wrong direction ^^.

Good to know that this little icon can now show up on other iphone screens than mine and my beta testers ones .

If you want to find it directly in iTunes, you’ll have to search for it. Oddly, due to these strange rules, it’ll not show up on top of the Release Date page.

I would like to stress that all your feedback is welcome, on the forum (registration is not mandatory) or directly through my . I have some plans for future updates, but would like to know your thoughts before anything.
