While I try make every photo "artistic" (a term that I am loath to use), a lot of my images lean towards the documentary side of art. The ones that you see here were made solely for their aesthetic value.

4) My aim was to photograph the kids who were at the homeschoolers' Tryathlon practise, however it was very hard to spot the critters so only some of them are seen here.

Foul weather

"Foul weather" is really "fantastic weather" for a photographer because it gives some excellent photo opportunities.

Rockin' Rugby World Cup 2011

The Rugby World Cup has started in Auckland and the so-called "party central" is located on Queens Wharf in the CBD. They've renovated Shed 10 and I found these bands out assaulting ear drums: the sound level was well into the "permanent damage" range so I wore earplugs and felt the music as much as heard it. Using a speaker stack as a camera support was an interesting experience: it felt like my internal organs had been placed in a tumble dryer.

One of the stages had excellent access - I could touch musicians if I wanted to - which gave the opportunity for some unusual angles. I liked the facial expressions on the performers and audience, as well as the lighting.

Hamilton's Gap 27-8-11

Hamilton's Gap is a west coast beach that brought to mind the phrase "magnificent desolation", once used by an astronaut after he'd landed on the Moon (map).

I went with the Manukau Photographic Society, which explains the large number of cameras seen in these shots.

Auckland 'snow' 15 August 2011

These photos show a very impressive fall of hail in Manurewa, South Auckland, with drifts up to two inches deep. This is unprecedented in my memory.

Meterologists are describing the weather system as a one-in-50-year event, with snow at sea level in Wellington and a video record of snow falling in Pukekohe, south of Auckland.
