Stroke Antioxidant Treatment As a Sensible Preventative Measure

There is continuous mounting evidence that stroke antioxidant treatment makes a lot of sense. It certainly makes sense from a preventative standpoint, and also for anyone that has had a stroke as a measure to help insure against a future stroke. Antioxidants also help rid the body of free radicals, shown to help reduce the bad cholesterol, LDL or low-density lipoprotein. It should be kept at levels below 100 mg/dL. HDL or high-density lipoprotein is important as it removes or cleanses cholesterol from your body. According to several doctors I have consulted, the best way to raise HDL is through exercise. Levels of HDL of less than than 40 mg/dL for men and less than 50 mg/dL for women could put you at risk for heart disease.

Another main issue with strokes are that they cut off much needed blood supply to the brain which may result in permanent brain damage. Antioxidants can also repair partially damaged cells and repair them to function properly. It has been said that many doctors are 10 years behind in the area of nutrition and nutritional supplementation, but it appears that in the last few years, that gap is decreasing.

Triglyceride is yet another factor to be considered in heart disease and stroke. It is fat manufactured within the body. If you have high levels of this, it is likely that your balances of LDL and HDL will be out of proper balance. Triglyceride levels should not be higher than 150 mg/dL.

Please consult your trusted physician to have these levels checked. Adding more foods high in antioxidants should be recommended by any good doctor. This may not be enough, especially for people who smoke. Obviously the first serious consideration should be to quit by whatever means are necessary. In the meantime, high quality natural supplements high in antioxidants may help some. I have personally seen this measured by an Oxi-data test, which measures the amount of free radical damage in your body. Your doctor should be able to administer this simple test, and their are home kits available as well. I can get them for around $20.00 plus shipping if anyone is interested. So in conclusion, yes, stroke antioxidant treatment makes sense, it certainly cannot hurt.

What Are Prebiotics and Probiotics – The Basics Explained

Prebiotics and Probiotics are bacteria that reside in your intestinal tract. Some are good while some are undesirable. Prebiotics feed to beneficial bacteria in your system, but are not digestible. Probiotics are desirable and as we age, many of us need help in this area. The balance of the two promote “regularity”. Poor diet can promote the need for these in younger adults as well.

The chemically active ingredient in prebiotics is oligosaccharides, and a natural source would be legumes, fruits, and whole grains. Yogurt products produced with bifidobacteria have oligosaccharides.

Probiotics known as lactobacilli and are bacteria, the healthy type, normally found in fermented foods such as yogurt. You’ve all seen the TV commercials promoting yogurt especially. They can also be found in sauerkraut.

An imbalance in these 2 can promote an over abundance of yeast in the system, diabetes promotes yeast growth . When a person is taking antibiotics, say for an infection, the # of healthy microorganisms can be significantly reduced, and be replaced by pathogenic organisms, the antibiotics will not kill off the excess yeast. When our body has an over abundance of pathogenic organisms, this can cause problems which are immune system related. Examples would be chronic fatigue, colitis. or fibromyalgia. The imbalance can also affect the mouth and the skin.

These two supplements should be taken together to promote a healthy balance in your intestinal tract. In women, it is common to take antibiotics for a yeast infection, however this may not always solve the problem, as there be a primary imbalance between the “pre and probiotics” and the yeast infection may persist. I know may women run to the local drug store for products to deal with the situation, and sometimes this is sufficient. If the condition persists, please seek the advice of a qualified physician.

Here again we have a preventative measure or measures to avoid future health challenges. A certified nutritionist may be worth visiting as well. This can be a complicated subject and my goal was just to provide basic information what are Prebiotics and Probiotics.

The Health Benefit of Omega 9 Fatty Acids

Your Body has the ability to produce Omega 9. Omega 9 fatty acids health benefits are one of overall health, however the body cannot produce it without the presence of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. The main benefits broken down are that it generally enhances immune function, helps to regulate blood sugar, by lowering resistance to insulin, and lastly and can aid in hardening of the arteries by lowering cholesterol. It can also aid in protection against certain types of cancer.

It is not considered “essential” since it is manufactured by our body, but not without an adequate amount of Omega 3 and Omega 6. It is considered a monounsaturated fat or oleic acid. Good sources of omega 9 are olive oil and macadamia nuts, these are at the top of the list. Other good sources are avocado, and nuts and seeds, such as hazelnuts, pecans, peanuts (and peanut butter), sesame seeds and oil, cashews and pistachios. If one doesn’t consume the above, 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil daily in the diet will provide the necessary amount. There are supplements on the market for this oil, but I don’t personally see the need for one, given the food choices available and olive oil is so common in many cultures and especially these days in the west, especially in health conscious households.

Please be aware that the negative affect of over abundance of Omega 9 in the body has been positively linked to breast cancer.

Bone Health Supplements – Crucial As We Age

Calcium is by far one of the most important bone health supplements, however, Vitamin D plays an important role in the body’s absorption of calcium. Our bones consist of approximately 35 to 40 per cent calcium. Phosphorus especially, Boron, Magnesium, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K and Zinc are also believed to be effective to help our bones as well. All of the aforementioned work together and support each other. Sunshine is a good natural source of Vitamin D, even if you can get 10-15 minutes per day.

Good natural sources for the above mentioned mineral and vitamins are garlic and onions, parsley, black pepper, cabbage dandelion, and cod liver oil. Good health sure seems complicated these days, doesn’t it? With good information and some “diet diligence”, it doesn’t have to be.

When we are growing up from infancy through early childhood, these nutrients are obviously very important for bone development, until we get to our teenage years, bone is being made and developed until at that point we reach what is known as peak bone mass. Then as we age, bone mass begins a steady decrease.

In recent years, the FDA was promoting food over supplements, now they are saying the opposite, very strange in a couple of ways, certainly they know most people don’t eat a proper diet and that food quality continues to decline in quality due to pollution, dangerous herbicides and pesticides, soil depletion and so forth. On the other hand, certain politicians are now trying to “regulate” the supplement industry along with pharmaceutical companies and trying to basically take away the supplement market or regulate it to the point of ridiculousness. This is all because the two want their “piece of the pie, and will do anything they can to get it.

As we mature, our bodies manufacture less and less of the nutrients and absorb less of them also. We see bone deterioration and breakage and so forth at a much higher rate. This is an especially important time to be sure to be getting enough of these nutrients daily and n becomes very important. Choose your supplements wisely from reputable companies.

Mangosteen, believe it or not has been shown to effectively help increase bone density, I remember a lecture several years ago from a doctor stating he had actually been able to increase his own bone density through regular us of Mangosteen supplementation. Acai may help as well as it contains some of the important nutrients need and mentioned above. Your physician can provide a simple test to tell you what your bone density is, and I would advise it for older folks. Please follow their advice to avoid or correct avoidable problems. My personal opinion is that bone health supplements are a must, especially as we age.

Foods Highest in Vitamin K – Kale

Foods High in Vitamin K consist mostly of dark green leafy vegetables. Leading the list is Kale, followed by Collard Greens, (a personal favorite of mine), spinach and turnip greens (another favorite of mine). I live in Chicago, but lived many years down south. What can I say? They got Me!

Frozen and without salt added have the highest concentration. Other decent sources are Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Onions, Dandelion Greens, common in prepackaged fancy mixed salad greens these days. Vitamin K can also be found in mos Lettuces, Avocado, Parsley, Asparagus, Sauerkraut and Endive. Some vegetable oils may also have high levels of the vitamin. It may also be found in beef and pork liver.

An interesting medical fact, if you are taking Coumadin, (warfarin), a blood thinner, Vitamin K may reduce the affect of the drug, while consuming Vitamin K may increase it’s affect. If you are taking Coumadin, it would be advisable to ask to ask your doctor about this.

Vitamin K has coagulatory properties and is produced mainly in the lower intestine. A recommended daily intake would be 65 to 120 micrograms per day for the average person. This vitamin is essential for proper blood clotting and healthy bone development, and helping to keep blood vessels flexible.

A serious lack of Vitamin K can lead to osteoporosis, excessive bleeding or even hemorrhaging, atherosclerosis, and even birth defects caused by improper bone growth and development. So what exactly is Vitamin K?

Vitamin K falls into a broad chemical category of naphthoquinones. All types of vitamin K fall into abroad chemical category of substances called naphthoquinones. Within this naphthoquinone category, there are two types of vitamin K. The first kind, known ashylloquinones, is made from plants.
Best Foods that Contain Omega 3

While many people think that salmon contains the highest concentration of omega 3’s, that’s not the case, so let’s clear up what foods contain omega 3, and the highest concentration.

By far the highest concentration is found in flax seeds. Next on the list is walnuts, followed by salmon, especially Chinook. Interestingly enough, canned salmon apparently offers more overall nutritional value and and the essential oils. Sardines are also a very high source of the oil.

Cooked soybeans are also high on the list, as well as halibut, broiled or baked. According to Dr. Oz, DHA omega 3 is the most important. There are 3 types of the oil, DHA or docosahexanoic acid, EPA or Eicosapentaenoic acid, and ALA or Alpha-Linolenic Acid. They are all important. Cod and hemp oil are good sources as well. Other fatty fishes that are good sources are mackerel, albacore tuna, herring and lake trout. Omega 3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Benefits of these oils are fort he heart, the brain, and normal growth and development. They are especially beneficial for the heart and cholesterol levels and doctors advise to eat fish high in omega 3’s at least twice a week. I live in Chicago, where fresh fish is available, but not very fresh at the mega markets. I’m spoiled however, having living in places like Pensacola Beach, FL., New Orleans, and the coast of southern California and New Jersey. We do however have good fish mongers here, some with reasonable prices. I now make salmon patties at least once a week. Acai berries also contain omega 3, which I found very interesting.

Research shows that regular consumption, can reduce inflammation, and if you’ve been following the content on this site, we know inflammation, especially chronic low grade inflammation can lead to diseases such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis and more. Also note that omega 6 leads to higher inflammation. There are some good supplements on the market, please choose wisely, from a reputable company, recommended are a supplement high in DHA, pharmaceutical grade if you can find it, would be best. The The Mediterranean diet is said to have a healthy balance between Omega 3 and 6, both necessary for good health. I hope you find this article helpful in what foods contain omega 3 and the importance of it in your daily diet.

Omega 3 Causes Tinnitus? – Not Normally

There seems to be a a fair amount of inquiries on the Internet regarding whether or not Omega 3 causes Tinnitus or “ringing in the ears”. I did a good bit of research on the subject and found no evidence to support that it does. Tinnitus is a symptom, not a disease and may be caused by many things. It can caused by an extreme physical change, an obvious one being subjected to a loud noise, whether a one time incident or a prolonged situation from a job, loud equipment etc.

It can also be caused by other significant physical change, emotional change or lifestyle change, it is not well understood. Other factors may include something as simple as ear wax build-up or blockage, Meniere’s disease (abnormal inner ear fluid pressure), age, or neurological disorder due to injury. It also may only be temporary. Seek a qualified physician, and audiologist or EMT. It is important to mention all medications you are currently taking, including over the the counter, prescription, and yes, supplements. If any of the aforementioned might be the underlying cause or causes, they may be ruled out one by one. Tinnitus does not seem to be hereditary.

If the particular physician advises that nothing can be done about it, seek another physician. Try to reduce as much stress as you can from your life and monitor your diet. Some things that may trigger it might be caffeine, sugar, salt, artificial sweeteners, alcohol or tobacco. These can be eliminated one by one. I was a troubleshooter for many years in a different industry, but the process is always the same, start by simple process of elimination, start with the most obvious, e.g., start with what has changed since the Tinnitus began and work back words.

By the way, I am a firm believer in being involved in your own treatment plan with physicians and will only work with doctor’s who are open to it, after all, it’s your health, not theirs at stake. So far as my research has shown, I have found no evidence that Omega 3 causes Tinnitus, but if you have it, and are taking Omega 3, stop for a month and see if the condition improves.

The Importance of Aging Properties of Antioxidants

The aging or more correctly termed anti-aging properties of antioxidants vary greatly and work in different ways within the body. Antioxidants can slow the progression of aging which shows up as “oxidative stress”, a number of neurodegenerative diseases, and so forth. Aging may be something we see in a person or do not see as it takes place inside the body on a cellular level. Good examples would be the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, heart disease, cancer and more.

Oxidative stress works like this: Your body’s cells are composed of molecule containing protons and electrons. A healthy cell will have a proton surrounded by electrons, which are in pairs. When oxidation of a cell occurs, the oxidation strips the cell of 1 of the electrons from a pair, thus damaging the cell and keeping it from functioning properly, for example communicating important information to other cells, passing on and sharing of important nutrients and so forth.

Antioxidants help to fight free radical damage or oxidation of cells in the body, thus, their importance. Foods high in antioxidant capability would be blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, grapes, plums, dates and prunes. there are more. The deeper color red and purple fruits seem to have the highest antioxidant factor.

I would be remiss not to mention Mangosteen and Acai, both high in antioxidants. Vitamin E has shown to be a key antioxidant for the brain.

Especially in our modern society, many of us don’t consume enough of these foods regularly in our diets. Our world today is filled with more and more pollutants, and stress. We eat too much processed foods as a convenience, loaded with chemicals and stripped of nutrients. Soils in which we grow our foods become more depleted and loaded with more chemicals, and water supplies deteriorate. all sources of oxidation and free radical damage. I recently read a study that stated the next generation is not expected to live as long, due to the aforementioned.

My advice is to eat as much of the above foods as possible and make use of good high quality supplements from reputable companies. I have a doctor friend (Certified Doctor of Chinese Medicine or DOM) who offers an inexpensive in home lab test that will tell you, quite accurately the amount of free radical damage, I’ve used it myself .

The aging properties of antioxidants have never had more significance than today, please make use of them as often as possible!

Is Mangosteen Safe? Find Out!

People who have never heard of mangosteen often ask me, is mangosteen safe? My answer is yes. There are just a few exceptions I’ve run across, and please note, this is regarding “pure mangosteen”. In rare instances, some people are allergic to it. The way you can tell is that you develop itchiness, sometimes severe. One option is to stop taking the supplement for 2 weeks, and then try again, cutting the dosage in half. The only other known health risk is if you are taking Coumadin, or Crystalline warfarin sodium, it is a blood thinner or anti- coagulant, often used in heart patients. Please consult your physician if you are taking Coumadin and are considering taking a mangosteen supplement.

The other thing to consider of course would be is the mangosteen supplement you are using or are going to use a pure product, meaning not blended with other products. Does it have added chemicals or preservatives such as sodium benzoate, a preservative. Is it a proprietary blend? Usually meaning the manufacturer isn’t listing all the ingredients, and probably not listing the amount of mangosteen in the product. There may be something else in the product you may be allergic to, the only way to know what your reaction will be is to isolate and use a pure product with no added ingredients, fillers, preservatives, etc. Also check out the company who manufactures the product. What is their reputation. An easy way to do this is to go to Google, enter the company name, and after the name, enter review, e.g., XYZ company review. So for the vast majority of supplement users, is mangosteen safe? Yes, but as always, do your due diligence, and always consult your physician when adding supplements to your health regimen.
