Our Dear Friend Julian Guzman (AKA Skript) is one of Boston's finest emerging artists. His work brings elements that quite ordinarily would seem to clash or better yet, deemed "not acceptable" in this town. The combination of his love of architecture and the 'line' seems to be at ease with the wild and challenging nature of spray paint and graffiti. His ability to control his medium is as sharp as the x-acto blades he uses to cut his stencils. Perhaps it's his background in Architecture that defines his technique, but While Artists today use technology to aid them in the process traditional art, Skript uses technology in the same way an architect would use it to design. I'm not going to spoil the surprise (as you need to see it in person), but there was a laser cutter used in the process of some of his recent work. That said, here is what the man himself had to say about this show:

“This series of work deals with the daunting task of deciphering the future and revealing what it holds. Each piece starts as a blank surface awaiting its fate of ink line-work. The line-work is a spontaneous act of fluidity. One line is laid down and another is added to it like a city grid growing streets as a means of necessity… Color and stenciled imagery are organically infused to these streets the give character to each city. Each piece acts as its own borough conveying different commentary on our very own complex futures.”

And While I would never say this to his face, "Artist" is a loose title for him. Skript is in many ways a Designer of Visual Landscapes and Urban Typologies. Somehow I'm pretty sure he'd be ok with that description.

Odyssey Two, runs throughout Art Forum Berlin and highlights 20 years of urban art pioneer FUTURA 2000's work.

The show focuses on the dual themes of memory and the past, and the influence these have on an individual’s imagined world. Futura’s obsessions with space and hyperindustrial landscapes grew from his adolescence: a time when man first landed on the moon, and when the New York skyline soared with a mass of fresh skyscrapers. But the world in his pieces is entirely unique – a place that has developed in his mind over time, where remnants of earlier memories co-exist with imagined, abstract landscapes. Futura’s latest pieces show an artist comfortable in the world he has created, making accomplished works that use occasional, frenetic bursts of outline to perfectly convey mood, atmosphere and situation, as well as his trademark and iconic touches. Collectors will be able to buy an accessible selection of key pieces from Futura’s unique, imagined world: study pieces provide entry level works; there will be a trademark Pointman series and a limited edition print run. There will also be a small number of recent abstract canvases.

Some years ago we had the pleasure of working with him on a painting commissioned by Concepts Cambridge and the second video is in reality a good representation of his work process. Well...It's better to see it happen in person, but this is pretty good too. (The man holding the camera is Stash...another legend of New York City's original graffiti scene)

Brothers...Sisters...This is in my ears the ultimate House Track. No matter where you are or when this track is played, one thing is for sure; People are gonna be Clapping, Singing, Dancing and yes...sometimes even crying. There will be people embracing in Love and some even waiting to take someone home. At least in my humble and rather critical opinion, this track gives me the chills. Seriously, it might be the lyrics or maybe just the melody. Maybe it's that piano, maybe it's just everything. M organ Geist of Metro Area -who was recently brought to Boston by our friends of "Where's the love" - has done the latest mix of the now classic "We Make it Good" Series. (Don't forget to check out Chris Devlin's if you haven't yet) Here's what he had to say:

“This little mix is obviously inspired by the original Cosmic DJs (Baldelli) and innovative DJs of (or nearer to) my own generation, like DJ Harvey and Daniel Wang. I made sure to include some records that I thought I “discovered” on my own, only to hear them played by other (better) DJs who probably knew about them a lot longer than I did. Parallel evolution is a bitch, but I didn’t want to abandon these beloved tracks just because they were “marked” by another DJ. For example, most DJs who know the Transfer Station Blue track associate it with Sarcastic Disco, the infamous and beautiful Harvey mix – yet I believe I got my first copy of it from my departed friend, Barry Lederer, and associate it with digging and listening and learning in his dusty old apartment on 24th Street in Manhattan. I find Harvey inspirational, but don’t want my own Barry-nostalgia supplanted. I realize it sounds corny, but sometimes you have to reclaim music that is important to you, and that’s what a lot of this mix is about for me. – Morgan Geist (Environ, Unclassics, Metro Area)”

Making us proud one orange line ride at a time!!! Congrats to Nabo Rawk & Paul Foley for this awesome Video. I'm gonna go ahead and assume "Wasted Talent" is about being talented while on Booze...perhaps not. Who cares. In a time when even Big Papi juices and Deval can't get anything passed through his squeaky voice, there ain't nothing better than strolling through town on the T. At least for our broke standards, that as much AC as we are getting on this recession Khed!

B ush Tetras....great band! Anyone who's known me since I got my first DJ gear, can probably attest that I wasn't spinning the latest House tunes but rather some pretty noisy stuff. From Gang of Four to James Chance, ESG was probably the most Dance-floor thing I played. Thank God for the Rapture and the Blessing that was "House of Jealous Lovers". That track was always my transition record to the lovely world of electronic dance music. The years have past and my post punk records have been collecting dust. For years I was a closet Disco collector with House music nostalgia. Today it finally all seems to be OK to tell people you play Disco. Shit...It might even be a new trend. In this quest to play dance music regardless of genre, I'm finally starting to see some real creativity and possibilities to play tracks that would have otherwise- like my bush tetra LP- just collect dust. And this is however the point of today. GOD BLESS THE EDIT!!! It's worked for Disco and now it's come back full-circle for me with edits like the Burglar Tom revision of Bush Tetras' Snakes Crawl. Leave it to those Brits to re-invent the wheel...Brilliant. It's really made me feel confident that no longer you need a specific crowd to play certain records...and perhaps most people and most DJ's don't see that as a problem, but for me is always been somewhat of an impediment. I'm glad we have The Glow and some similar nights around town now, where it seems that music is starting to take center stage over the scenes. In the mean time, check this edit. Perhaps already old for some of you edits connoisseurs, it felt appropriate to share with you today, this little piece of the past/present.

The event is in support of The Jimmy Fund and the Pan Mass Challenge. our friend Chandler, is riding the PMC for the third year in a row. Over the past few years, Chandler and his team are excellent folks, friends of ours and definitely in need of your support to make this year's ride even better than last!

Sunday night will consist of socializing, dancing and roller-racing – a little bit of something for everyone, bike or no bike! If you are not familiar with roller-racing, its pretty simple: head-to-head stationary bike races, 300m in distance, the speed and time are projected for the crowd to see – a great spectator sport and a good way to settle disputes with friends. The 300m seems to be the right distance for everyone, whether you race weekly or have ridden to work once in the past few years. Our good friends over at OPEN Bicycle will be providing bicycles to race with so just bring your game face and checkbook!

Thinking back...Our first proper music review/rant on this blog came a couple years ago when these duo of New Yorkers released "Hold On" on DFA. Around the same time they played at the AKult Disco here in Boston's own Goodlife Bar. It was a packed house and quite a memorable one for me because it was the same day of the Dondi White Sneaker Release at Bodega. But to be honest the best memory of that night was the morning after, waking up in Chinatown to a massive New England Snow Storm. But let's talk music, and in this case Video. Like it wasn't enough that we love Holy Ghost! in this blog, the little bastards go right ahead all Tarantino-Style (frame by frame) and re-make New Order's Classic "Confusion" Video. Shit...even Arthur Baker makes a freaking Cameo. What Can I say, the kids know what they are doing and they are doing it right. Pleasantly enough too was the Cameo by Nancy Whang.
