center;">"France Face Lost" by Marc Lathuilliere
February 02 - February 25, 2010

Marc Lathuilliere's exhibition entitled "France Face Lost" deals with French identity. It is the questioning of a visual artist looking at his homeland as if it wasn't. As if he was a tourist from fast moving Asia discovering the clichés and strangeness of a sleeping beauty named France.

Marc Lathuilliere first experienced this swing in perception in 2004, after extended stays in Asia, mostly in Thailand and South Korea. Coming back home, he realized how deeply French identity is anchored in the past, and the tremendous efforts French People devote to the preservation of its heritage. Through his "asianized" eyes, France now seemed estranged: he started to observe it with both wonder and worry.

To express these mixed feelings, he asked the French he met all over the country to wear a mask, always the same one, and then he took a portrait of them. An interactive game that froze them, shedding a new and doubtful light on their daily surroundings-architecture, sceneries, furniture… - , questioning the stereotypes on which we build our identities.

In five years, from Provence to Normandy, and from Bordeaux to Metz, more than four hundred people have already let him take their "de-faced" portrait.

Marc Lathuillière’s exhibition of photographs ‘’France Face Lost’’ opens at the Alliance Française Total Gallery on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, with cocktails at 6:30 pm. It will be on exhibit until February 25, 2010.

Gallery days and hours:
Monday to Thursday, 9am to 6pm; Friday, 9am to 2pm; Saturday, 9am to 5pm;
Closed on Sundays and Holidays.

Marc Lathuillière will hold a workshop at Silverlens Gallery on January 30 and February 6 followed by an artist’s talk to introduce his work and artistic approach. For more information about the workshop and the artist talk please contact Silverlens Gallery at 816 0044 or email Leonore Casuga at manage@silverlensphoto.com.

For high resolution images of the artworks and more details about the exhibit, kindly contact Mr. Stéphane Doutrelant (AFM Director) or Ms Sabrina Durand (Cultural Officer) at 895 7441 / 895 7585 or email sabrina@alliance.ph. I turned down solo exhibit offers from galleries abroad in the process, explaining to them that I owe my beloved country this exhibit," says Lorenzana.

Seen largely as a preview to a grander solo show in September 2010, The Midnight Lullaby combines the artist's technical application of the play between light and shadow, while staying true to his pop art, animation and surreal imagery influences.

"I'm fascinated with clowns - so deep, tragic, mysterious, and alone. So many different emotions can be expressed just by using a clown's face."

The Midnight Lullaby opens at 6 pm on Friday, December 11, 2009, and runs until January 09 at SLab's 20Square Gallery.

The Midnight Lullaby will be shown alongside Singapore International Photography Festival at Silverlens Gallery and Indivisibilis by Gary-Ross Pastrana at SLab.
For inquiries, contact Silverlens Gallery at 2/F YMC Bldg. Yet it would seem that every problem that we have traces its roots to education, particularly citing its imbalances, inequities and inadequacies.

TutoK, in line with its implementation of art and advocacy projects, proposes to bring the topic of education into this engagement, thus gathering a visual congress to represent and assert a diverse range of contemporary explorations to promote further inquiry and discussion.

SOeNA is the State of Education and the Nation, and it is TutoK's yearend assembly of art and artists to be held at Manila Contemporary at Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City . SOeNA is part of of TutoK's current focus on education, beginning with TutoK Eduk early this year. At the core of this exhibit is a series of works investigating the manifestation and operation of education as systems, objects and people. The theme is resonated through 2 x 2 feet wall works assembled throughout the gallery, completing the participation of more than 150 artists via paintings, sculptures, installations and live art.

"TutoK SOeNA" is the 4th annual group exhibit organized by TutoK since 2006. It is jointly curated by Don M. Salubayba, Noel Soler Cuizon, J.Pacena II and Jef Carnay, and will open with live art and other performances at 6:30pm on Saturday, December 5, 2009. The exhibit will run until January 6, 2010.

Manila Contemporary is located at
Whitespace, 2314 Chino Roces Ave.
Pasong Tamo Extension, Brgy. Pacena II's is back with Static Reverb. Here his progressive explorations of multimedia assemblages that pits figuration against a combination of manual and digital manipulations. What Pacena achieves with these combines effectually interfaces the organic with the graphic, submitting the detachment and the stability of surfaces to a flux of gesture and expression.

The potency of multimedia practice is generally measured and exploited by its very ability to present and convey. It is medium and means; and even in the realms of the gallery, its tools are mostly installed as galleries within. As professional practitioner and educator of multimedia arts, Pacena’s scrutiny forges ahead of its proffered frames and platforms. In Static Reverb, what he plumbs are its intrinsic bits and rhythms, and through this, offers to us a vista of human perplexities.

To his mind, J. Pacena refers to ‘static’ as stills and clips, where image is captured in the inevitable stasis of its established vacuum. To disturb this stillness produces as well, a distinct static; like the interference of electrical fields in the broadcast of audio and visuals. Likewise, ‘reverb’ refers to reverberations, such as the phenomenon of echoed sounds perceived in enclosed spaces. These are, hence, the filters through which Pacena stages his social provocation: whether in action or inaction, what we do, what we say; what goes inside us and what we emit-- everything has effect and influence amongst our connections and environs.

In the realms of music, media and the visual arts, J. Pacena II enjoys a flourishing career as artist and teacher, and as videographer and photographer. He is a curator and convener of various collaborative art projects independently and with TutoK, as member of its core group. Static Reverb is his 5th solo exhibition.

The exhibit opens on Monday 6PM, November 16, 2009 at Blanc Gallery Makati. Blanc is located at Crown Tower, 107 H.V. dela Costa St., Salcedo Village, Makati City. What is achieved is but a glimpse into the actual reality that one would like to penetrate. Still this is no reason not to be curious, or aimlessly wander around, or eat exotic fertilized duck egg, or forge relationships over bottles of bad-tasting beer, or criticize undercurrent motivations, or even finding silly arbitrary commonness. Slovenian artist-curator Miha Horvat has been in town for three weeks now, lurking and surfing, and taking down notes. To kick start, Philippines-Slovenia Tactical Exchange before kindred Lena Cobangbang heads off to an Eastern European winter, we are organizing another live art talk show on Saturday at Green Papaya to exchange notes, back room talk and even discontentments. Like any good excuse, this but another hefty gathering to give Miha that long overdue welcome drink.

Philippines Slovenia Tactical Exchange is a means to its own end: to activate and initiate intensive creative cultural interaction, critical exchange and networking activities between the two artistic communities. Meanwhile drawing attention to the dis/similar socio-historical and geopolitical contexts that shape contemporary practice in these two far away regions. Artist-curators Lena Cobangbang (Philippines) and Miha Horvat (Slovenia) have been respectively chosen to undergo creative research-residency in the said locales in view of sharing ‘best practice’ experiences, identify undercurrent motivations, initiate critical engagement, deepen networks of cooperation, read each other, and dream of utopic tactical artistic actions. Of course because we are all for sustainable cultural communities and long-term management strategies their residencies are meant to hit all birds with one stone, by default mapping out alternative cultural management strategies and methods. In effect putting into perspective how independently run initiatives have managed throughout the last years to influence local cultural production and politics.

sct.blogs.culture360.org/2009/10/09/a-means-to-its-end/
Philippines Slovenia Tactical Exchange is supported under the Asia Europe Independent Creative Art Spaces Follow-up Grant.

GREEN PAPAYA ART PROJECTS
41 T. Rillo has her Houses, photographs that bounce between meaning and material. Joining the group is Pettyjohn’s large-scale paintings of a time of alienation and self-discovery in The American Sweet. Rounding the stellar selection are Steve Tirona’s Imelda Collection, which have shown famously in Manila, Hong Kong, New York, and are making their debut in Miami at PULSE.

A highlight of the new PULSE venue is its enhanced platform for their signature programming series, including the launch of a new performance program featuring daily outdoor concerts. PULSE Miami will be held on Thursday, December 3 through Sunday, December 6, 2009. The fair will run concurrently with Art Basel Miami Beach.

The Miami debut of PULSE Performance will feature daily performances and concerts by young emerging artists such as Maria Jose Arjona, whose performances will be among the highlights of the new programming. The Vivian Girls, The Blow, and Exene Cervenka are some of the more notable musical talents in the outdoor concert and performance series.

Additionally, PULSE will present its signature program of large-scale sculptures and installations throughout the fair's exhibition halls and lawn, as well as the PULSE Play> video lounge curated by João Ribas.

Each year, one artist featured in IMPULSE, the section of the fair dedicated to solo artist presentations, is awarded a $2,500 cash prize. This year's PULSE Prize will be awarded in honor of Adriaan van der Have, Founder and Director of Torch Gallery, who was an inspiring force in the art world for his dedication to the promotion of emerging artists. The winner will be announced Friday, December 4, 2009 during the PULSE Party at PLUNGE at the Gansevoort South.

PULSE Miami 2009 Exhibitor List

55, Shanghai; Angell Gallery, Toronto; Angles Gallery, Santa Monica; Arróniz Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; Jeff Bailey Gallery, New York; Baró Cruz, São Paulo; Galerie Anita Beckers, Frankfurt; Bitforms Gallery NYC, New York; Brancolini Grimaldi Arte Contemporanea, Rome, Florence; Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco; BravinLee Programs, New York; Catharine Clark Gallery, San Francisco; Conner Contemporary Art, Washington; Conrads, Duesseldorf; Davidson Contemporary, New York; DCKT Contemporary, New York; Dean Project, New York; EDS Galeria, Mexico City; Espacio Contemporary, New York; Dean Project, New York; EDS Galeria, Mexico City; Espacio Liquido, Gijon; Lukas Feichtner Galerie, Vienna; Rosamund Felsen, Santa Monica; Fred, London; FTC. KIMI IMIK is a palindrome, not only of letters but inevitably, of human conditions where the shifts between docile submission and the stirrings of reaction or even of resistance are placed in mutual confrontation. Within this space between reflections and deflections is the void where Rodriguez stages his metaphors. KIMI IMIK is a play on dreadful, as well as fantastic possibilities, which nonetheless belie its guttural call for resolution.

Iggy Rodriguez was named by the Cultural Center of the Philippines as Thirteen Artists Awardee in 2009. His art studies began as an advertising major at UST College of Architecture and Fine Arts. Known for his pen-and-ink drawings and the collaborative street art he undertakes with the artists' collective UGATLahi, Rodriguez crafts his imagings from his own milieu and calling as community organizer and activist. He is also a core member of TutoK.

The exhibit opens on Tuesday 6PM, November 10 at Blanc Compound Mandaluyong. Blanc is located at 359 Shaw Boulevard Interior, Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City. For more information, please call or sms 752-0032 / 0920-9276436, email info@blanc.ph or visit www.blanc.ph and www.blancartspace.multiply.com

KIMI IMIK will run until November 30, 2009 and is co-produced by slash/art artists’ initiatives.

(ACPI) is holding its 3rd Animahenasyon Pinoy animation festival on November 25-28 at the Gateway Mall, Araneta Center.

In an effort to build an audience, awareness and development of original contents, ACPI puts together its flagship project through an annual animation festival called Animahenasyon that showcases original animated works of both aspiring and professional animators in the country through a competition.

Animahenasyon serves as a venue for Filipino animators to present their world-class ideas, and opens doors of opportunities for them to meet with and be inspired by the finest names in the industry. It also aims to create greater awareness of the Philippine animation industry and its contributions to the global entertainment business, while tapping locally produced content for promotion in animation markets here and abroad.

The festival is composed of the professional and the student/amateur divisions that will have different running time categories: 1 to 5 minutes; 6 to 20 minutes, 21 to 60 minutes, and the full-animated feature (more than 60 minutes). There are also categories for music video, title sequence, public information, demo reel, and TV series. There will also be animated works in exhibition (full-length, special citation, and past Animahenasyon winners).

Last year’s grand prize winner of Animahenasyon was Love and Marriage, a jab at the folly of racial prejudice in marriage, as seen through the eyes of its Chinese-Filipino filmmaker Kenny Lyn Tai. Love and Marriage is a narrative musical cartoon that relates the story of Chinese-Filipino interracial marriage, and a comic take on this long-standing issue in the Chinese society captured in 7.5 minutes. Tai graduated from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde with a degree in Multimedia Arts, and is now a freelance animator.

This year’s Animahenasyon will also have a symposium on learning and teaching animation, entrepreneurship in animation, and the future of the game development industry in the Philippines. Resource persons from Canada and France will be sharing their expertise, best practices, and insights on the global animation industry.

Also part of Animahenasyon 2009 is an exhibit of the life and works of this year’s lifetime achievement awardee Jose Zabala Santos, uncle of renowned artist Nonoy Marcelo.

Take part in

Animahenasyon 2009: 3rd Pinoy Animation Festival

from November 25-28, 2009, at the Gateway Mall, Araneta Center, Grab your tickets now and get ready to be animated!
________________________________________________

Opening ceremony: by invitation

Gallery exhibit: Open to the public (Free admission)

Closing ceremony: Open to the public (Free admission)

PhP 80.00, closing film: PhP 110.00

Symposium 1 & 2: PhP 530.00 each

Symposium 3: PhP 850.00 (a.m. & p.m. snacks included)

*Program and topics may change without prior notice.

**Tickets are available at all TicketNet outlets located at the SM department store customer service area and at the Araneta Coliseum ticket booths. The latter is broadly conceived, from the visual and literary to the architectural and performative and on to the hypermediated. While the 2002 Art Studies conference reflected on discourses that have shaped writing on Philippine art, this conference maps out new disciplinal streams and modes of studying Philippine art. As such, it is seen as a platform of inquiry situating Philippine art studies in a critically interpretive and interrogative space. While the reflexive posture that the conference takes signals the act of looking back, it also intimates possibilities and directions, and aims to form coherent signposts and productive engagements for scholars, researchers and artists alike, in the future.

The conference explores the following themes:

Pedagogy:

• Production of knowledge about Philippine art

• Systems sustaining dominant knowledge of Philippine art

• Art and the everyday – revisiting the links between art and life

• Spaces of pedagogy and spaces of critique

• Art practice as pedagogical possibility

• Tracing disciplinal orientations in art studies and humanities

• Curriculum building and textbook writing in the Humanities

• Art Education in the Philippines: An Assessment

Curatorial Practice:

• Exhibitions as dialogical platforms

• Curatorial models that challenge the notion of an art ‘center’

• Curation and pedagogy

• Curation and aesthetic debates: Variant modes of art reception

• Collaborative curatorial practice

• Curation and the production of contemporary art history

• Curation, institutions, and art markets

Local Art Writing and Criticism:

• Local art writing and their specific discourses

• Local criticism and regional, global resonances

• Knowledge production and local art writing in relation to the question of aesthetics

• Modes of circulation and audience formation

• Is art history global?

• Theory of art in the Philippines

Disciplinal Intersections:

• New studies in Philippine art and society

• Formation of disciplinal nodes and networks via disciplinal intersections

• Mapping creative, multi-disciplinal modes of inquiry and responses

• Interdisciplinal trajectories

• Methods in global art history or history of global art

• Art and social movements (class, gender, ecology, ethnicity, spirituality

Art historians, researchers, curators, artists and art administrators engaged in various art forms and whose works explore these themes and related issues are invited to send proposals for individual presentations. And so is its creator, Kidlat Tahimik. Born Eric Oteyza de Guia in 1942. Self-taught cineaste. Primitive filmmaker. Fiercely anti-commercial. Advocate of what he calls the Pinoy indio-genius. This we do by slaying the cultural father that is Hollywood. Breaking out of the colonial cocoon,as it were An indefatigable indie, he churns out film after film after film to this day. His praxis is to dig out his sariling duende, buried alive by education, and setting it free. This experience was a weighty influence on the themes of his films, most notably the semi-autobiographical Perfumed Nightmare (1977) and Turumba (1981). That latter of these two provides some insight into the circumstances that brought him to Europe and into the presence of filmmaker Werner Herzog, who along with director Francis Ford Coppola and his American Zoetrope Films was instrumental in helping to release Perfumed Nightmare in America. This groundbreaking film went on to win the international film critics jury prize at the Berlin Film festival, as well as the Catholic Jury Prize and the Ecumenical Jury prize.

FILMOGRAPHY
1977- Mababangong Bangungot aka Perfumed Nightmare
1979 - Sinong Lumikha Ng Yoyo? In varying degrees of love and hate? Mark Salvatus, WOP resident, embarks on a stroll of our beloved cities to investigate how artists, creatives, by-standers, and the public see the city in different perspectives. Taking a step further and begging committed actions. Yes, opinions will be strongly solicited. Kicking off his eight-week residency is an introduction to Neo-Urban Planner along with a presentation from Gem Urdaneta, sound installation from Buen Calubayan and Jong Pairez's Postal Box Project. Romulo St., Araneta Center, Cubao Quezon City

SABAW is pleased to welcome California-based composer, pianist, electronic musician, instrument-builder, CHRIS BROWN, who creates music for acoustic instruments with interactive electronics, for computer networks, and for improvising ensembles. He will be performing his Transmissions series in collaboration with media artist Tengal and the electronic sound-video performance collective, The Gangan Ensemble.

The "Transmissions" series is an audience interactive, live electronic music performance series about the transmission of culture through the information media of sound and radio. It redefines the relationship of performers and audience to the radio medium, opening audio spaces to unheard voices in diverse communities by emphasizing the ability of both to create both the content and the means of production of radio communication. For this performance, radios in automobiles are primarily going to be used since it provides a more familiar experience and is easily accessible today.

Using the outdoor parking space of Cubao X, Chris Brown and The Gangan Ensemble produce live electronic music, while video artist Tad Ermitano performs live video manipulation alongside the electro-magnetic sound tapestry. We are also pleased to feature the video works of California-based visual artist, Johanna Poethig. The live music is mixed into a stereo channel, which is sent to a low-power FM radio transmitter, assigned to a unique frequency where people in the performance space can tune in.

Sound Performances by:
Chris Brown [computer, live sound engineering, radio transmissions]
Gangan Ensemble:
• Tengal [stereo mixers, drums, objects, ipods]
• Caliph 8 [turntables, samplers]
• Malek Lopez [laptop electronics]
• Inconnu ictu [analogue electronics]
• Blums Borres [electric guitar]
• Lirio Salvador [self-built electronic synthesizer]
Videos by:
Tad Ermitano
Johanna Poethig

more info here: http://tengalgorhythm.blogspot.com/2009/01/transmissions-gangan.html

THIS IS A FREE EVENT. The OPEN STUDIO SESSIONS invites the public to be part of the creative process as the methods of the performance of composition and electronic music and the radio transmissions shall be discussed, and where they can also interact with the artists. Even more so now that art is increasingly becoming another fashionable trend. Hang around exhibition openings and for sure you will catch conversations among collectors and enthusiasts mulling over the hottest ‘fashion finds.’ Well, it’s a wait-and-see now with the global financial crisis looming over our shoulders. Still what has market dictates have to do with obscurantist experimental sound practice? Precisely the point, as it neither appeals to any commercial or accessible taste, it looks back at our consumptive compulsions driven by a world manipulated by desires.

The OPEN STUDIO SESSIONS invites the public to re-think their position in the process of artistic production. A seeming back-stage pass, only this time there are no VIP lines! For two days, CHRIS BROWN and GANGAN ENSEMBLE open up their creative space to the public as they negotiate their way around the creative process, strategies of collaboration, methods of performance and composition of electronic music and radio transmission – touching upon various issues in composition, improvisation and performing electronic music. The sessions lead up to TRANSMISSION GANGAN, an open air video/sound performance at the parking space of CUBAO X on January 10. So come, if you are the action-hero-film type, this is the best time to catch the artists as they wrestle each other’s process.

FREE ADMISSION.
