On the night of the Fight of the Century, Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao retreated to his corner, confidently believing that he had already won the fight. When the results were announced in favor of his opponent, Floyd Mayweather Jr., he was left astonished, thinking that he won the fight as Mayweather “didn’t do nothing.” Pacquiao wasn’t alone in his astonishment, as the fight’s results surprised many other people as well.

Because of this, many have embarked on scrutinizing every angle of the fight and one recent statistics report made by Boxing News 24 shows perhaps what is Mayweather’s biggest nightmare: that he didn’t win the fight.

In an attempt to confirm the official fight statistics, Boxing News 24 gathered its team of leading boxing commentators to monitor a video of Mayweather and Pacquiao’s match. First, they viewed it in actual speed, then in slow motion, and finally frame by frame.

Through a careful examination of the fight, they tallied the blows made by each boxer and came up with startling statistics. What they found out magnified the long-standing suspicions over the legitimacy of the punch stats and of the verdict itself.

According to the statistics generated by Boxing News 24’s team, Mayweather indeed threw more punches than the Filipino boxer. They observed that he threw a total of 471 punches which is significantly higher to Pacquiao’s 414. However, only 68 of those 471 punches landed; 30 punches fewer than Pacquiao’s.

The final tallies of the fight’s three official judges were all in favor of Mayweather. In the official scorecards, the scores were tallied accordingly: Glenn Feldman 116-112, Burt Clements 116-112, Dave Moretti 118-110. However, in the alternative scorecard made by Boxing News 24’s team, they came up with a draw: 114-114.

A number of personalities support these statistics from Boxing News 24 and they have been openly expressing their thoughts to the media since the night of the fight. Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton spoke at the Spanish Grand Prix claiming that when he was watching the fight, he really felt that Pacquiao won. He described the Filipino boxer as “the attacking one.”

Moreover, even more reliable sources also think that Pacquiao won the fight like seasoned boxer Evander Holyfield. After the fight, he shared his observations that Pacquiao landed more punches than Mayweather.

“Well, I actually thought he did. The fact of the matter is you are the most aggressive one, you hitting him with shots. He [Mayweather] was the one blocking shots. Pacquiao seemed to hit him more times than he hit Pacuqiao,” Holyfield said.

Manny Pacquiao: Retirement decision on hold after surgery

Manny Pacquiao says he is close to making a decision on whether to retire from boxing.
The Filipino, 36, returned to his home country on Wednesday following defeat by Floyd Mayweather in their world welterweight super-fight on 2 May.

"I will focus on healing my shoulder. After that, I will announce continuing my career or retirement," he said.
"I'm not saying I am going to retire, but it's near. I'm already 36, turning 37 this December."

Despite a unanimous points defeat in Las Vegas, Pacquiao, a six-weight world champion, was welcomed back to the Philippines by fans as he paraded through the streets of capital city Manila on the back of a truck.

Pacquiao, who is also a congressman in his home country, had his arm supported by a sling following surgery on his injured shoulder - a problem he said had hampered him during the fight with Mayweather, the most lucrative in boxing history.

New figures released by American networks Showtime and HBO said the fight shattered the previous record for total pay-per-view buys with 4.4m purchases of the fight in the United States alone.
That generated $400m (£254m) in domestic sales while total revenue is expected to exceed $500m (£318m).

Following the fight, Mayweather, 38, called Pacquiao a "sore loser" and has ruled out a rematch.
But Pacquiao, who is the subject of a Nevada law suit after being accused of failing to declare his injury prior to the bout, said he would consider fighting the undefeated American again.

"I [would] like that. I want that. But my focus right now is my shoulder, my work as a congressman and my family," he said.

Pacquiao also said he had accepted his defeat by Mayweather, but that after reviewing the fight on video he still believed he won by a slim margin.

"I reviewed the fight and kept score. I won by two points, but a decision has been made and we have to accept it," he added.

Manny Pacquiao gets hero’s welcome on return to Philippines despite defeat

An injured Manny Pacquiao arrived back in the Philippines to a hero’s welcome on Wednesday, still adamant he did enough to win his fight against Floyd Mayweather at the start of the month.

The 36-year-old was wearing a sling on his right arm following shoulder surgery on a torn rotator cuff suffered before his unanimous points decision loss in the heavily-hyped fight in Las Vegas on 2 May. Pacquiao was sued in a US court last week by two people who felt defrauded by his failure to disclose the pre-bout injury.

The Filipino, smiling for photographers, told reporters at Manila airport his focus was not on boxing for now. “I haven’t discussed with anyone about my next fight. My focus right now is my shoulder recovery and to make it 100% OK, and my focus is on my congress work and family,” he said.

The Sarangani congressman was evasive when asked if he would seek a higher position in the government. “I haven’t thought about it but you know, God’s plan is higher than our plan,” he said. “His thought is higher than our thought, so who can say?”

Pacquiao, whose record slipped to 57-6-2 following the Mayweather defeat, was then taken on a motorcade through Manila, where thousands of fans lined the streets to greet their favourite sportsman.

His fans had taken the defeat against the defensively astute and unbeaten Mayweather hard, demanding a rematch and alleging foul play in the scoring. For his part, the boxer remained steadfast in his opinion that he deserved the decision following 12 rounds of fairly insipid action.

“Even if I do not feel well after the third round, fourth round, if we look at it round by round, you’ll see that we didn’t lose,” he said. “But like I said, we respect the decision of the judges.”

Mayweather initially appeared keen on the possibility of a rematch for a bout that the networks HBO and Showtime said generated record pay-per-view revenues of $400m in the US. However, the American has since changed tack, accusing Pacquiao of being a sore loser and insisting there would be no second bout. Pacquiao opted against getting into a verbal sparring match over Mayweather’s criticism.

Manny Pacquiao: 'I Still Feel Young and Strong'

Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, a beloved hero and congressman in the Philippines, is 32 years old, and has 58 fights on his resume.

Some fight experts might view boxing's best pound-for-pound fighter as a star that is on the verge of being past his prime, as Pacquiao prepares to battle another aging fighter, Juan Manuel Marquez, in November.

But as some boxers start seeing their skills diminish as they approach their mid-30s, Pacquiao doesn't appear to be slowing down.

"I still feel young and strong," said the welterweight last week.

That's encouraging news for Pacquiao fans, who might be concerned that the southpaw will face the toughest test of his career in his WBO title fight against Marquez, a Mexican fighter who remains bitter about a controversial split-decision loss to Pacquiao in a March 2008 rematch at the super featherweight division.

The first time the two boxers met was in 2004, and the fight ended in a controversial draw. The two bouts were fought at 125 and 130 pounds. The November fight will be at a contracted 144 pounds.

Pacquiao's fan base want a convincing victory this time around to dispell the notion that he is nothing short of the best boxer of his generation. Pacquiao has reportedly been training at an increased rate, and plans to fight more tactically this time around.

"In the first two fights, we got careless trying to land one good shot," said famed trainer Freddie Roach, according to The Philippine Star.

While many expect the fight to go the distance, Roach said he is "pretty confident" Pacquiao will knock out Marquez.

Roach and Pacquiao are certainly taking Marquez seriously, as the 38-year-old hard-hitter plans to enact revenge in Las Vegas.

"Lots of people saw the last two fights end controversially," said Marquez. "This time I'm looking for a knockout with more intelligence and patience."

Meanwhile, the fight everyone wants to see is Pacquiao against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and that could be forthcoming as Mayweather gets set to fight southpaw Victor Ortiz on Saturday.

Tickets to the latest bout between Filipino fighting congressman Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez are almost sold out, according to Top Rank Promotions President Bob Arum.

Arum says only a few tickets are left for the November 12 match, which will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Top Rank boss expects more people to buy tickets in the coming days, as both Pacquiao and Marquez are in New York City for a promotional tour.

The first leg of the tour was in Manila over the weekend, and Marquez said he was happy to receive a warm welcome from Filipinos.

Mexican champion Juan Manuel Marquez thanked Filipino boxing fans Monday for the warm reception he received during his visit to the country to promote his upcoming fight against pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

Marquez boarded Delta Airlines flight DL172 which left at 7:30 a.m. Monday to fly to the US for the second leg of their promotional tour.

Airport employees lined up to shake hands with the Mexican boxer as he walked towards the boarding gate.

"Thank you very much for the hospitality," Marquez said before entering the Business Class Lounge of Delta Airlines.

It was learned that Marquez almost decided not to take the flight after he inadvertently left his boxing gloves and his boxing shorts in one of the convoy of vehicles that he and his group took in going from the hotel to the airport.

Marquez later decided just to have the gloves and shorts shipped to the US on the next available flight so they can be with him in time for the promotion of their bout in New York.

Marquez and Pacquiao will meet in New York City for the second leg of their promotional tour.

From there, the two will proceed to Las Vegas before flying to Mexico City for the last leg of their tour before finally hitting the gym for full-time training for their November 12 bout.

Juan Manuel Marquez will be getting the biggest purse of his fighting career — $5 million — for the scheduled bout with Pacquiao in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on Nov. 12, 2011.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao, the congressman from Saranggani, will receive a guaranteed $20 million for the fight.

Pacquiao said he will force his opponent “to bleed for every cent” in their coming bout.

Before this, the Mexican fighter earned around $3.2 million when he fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September, 2009.

Hectic schedule ‘fells’ Manny Pacquiao; Juan Manuel Marquez grateful

With his hectic schedule, Manny Pacquiao missed a Concelebrated Mass for the pound-for-pound king and old rival Juan Manuel Marquez on the final day of the Manila media tour kickoff Sunday.
The Mass, scheduled at the Manila Cathedral, was delayed for at least 15 minutes and proceeded with only Marquez present.

The Mexican champion, who waged two intense and controversial battles with Pacquiao, was given a tour of the cathedral after he arrived early and earned the respect of the clergy.

Nobody in Team Pacquiao had any explanation for Pacquiao’s no-show. The Inquirer learned, though, that he was dead tired and overslept after a hectic day and night schedule the previous day.

Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz offered no explanation or comment when the Inquirer checked with him on why Pacquiao didn’t attend the Mass.

Even at the press conference, Pacquiao kept Marquez waiting for almost an hour.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum also shrugged and refused to make any comment on Pacquiao’s hectic schedule.

But Arum said he would be back in Baguio City after the training camp gets under way on Sept. 18 at the earliest when trainer Freddie Roach and strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza are scheduled to arrive to check on Pacquiao’s condition.

Prior to leaving for New York on Sunday night, Arum said Pacquiao faces a tough task in his third meeting with Marquez, adding that he expects “a similar fight as their two previous fights.”

Marquez, who left early Monday morning, was also visibly tired but smiled and waved at fans when he left the Manila Hotel. At the airport, he thanked the Filipino people for their hospitality.

Talking briefly about his Nov. 12 showdown with Pacquiao, the likeable Mexican told boxingscene.com he doesn’t believe that his moving up to 144 pounds will be a problem.

“I’m working with people who are going to help me achieve a good weight and raise my speed and strength to win the fight,” Marquez said.

Manny Pacquiao returning to HBO

When Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, with encouragement from stepson and Top Rank president Todd duBoef, took pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao from HBO to rival Showtime for his May 7 pay-per-view fight against Shane Mosley, it was a shocking development in the business of boxing -- one that eventually led to the ouster of HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg last month.

Three weeks after Greenburg's forced resignation, Arum said Friday he had decided to bring Pacquiao back to HBO after several weeks spent analyzing proposals from HBO and Showtime, who were competing for Pacquiao's next fight.

The deal means HBO PPV, long the industry leader in big boxing events, will produce and distribute Pacquiao's welterweight title defense against fierce rival Juan Manuel Marquez on Nov. 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KOs), who is 1-0-1 against Marquez (53-5-1, 39 KOs) in a pair of unforgettable fights with controversial decisions, had fought all of his major fights either on HBO or HBO PPV until the Mosley bout.

HBO PPV also has the fall's other major event, the Sept. 17 return of Floyd Mayweather Jr. to face welterweight titlist Victor Ortiz.

"In boxing we talk about great fighters coming back after a loss. Well, HBO came back just like a great fighter," duBoef, a key architect of the deal, told ESPN.com. "They came back from being on the canvas. They made their adjustments and came back and won the fight. You have to give them a lot of credit."

Since Pacquiao's lopsided win against Mosley, HBO and Showtime were both after Pacquiao-Marquez III. "We're thrilled that Manny Pacquiao's Nov. 12 fight with Juan Manuel Marquez will be presented by HBO Pay-Per-View," HBO spokesman Ray Stallone said in a statement. "We look forward to working with Top Rank on this special event."

Showtime, of course, was disappointed with the decision, but taking it in stride.

"The Pacquiao-Mosley fight re-established Showtime as a major player in the pay-per-view arena and we look forward to future opportunities with Top Rank and the other promoters in boxing," Showtime spokesman Chris DeBlasio told ESPN.com. "Right now we remain focused on a huge slate of sports programming we have lined for the fall."

DuBoef said he personally notified HBO co-presidents Richard Plepler and Michael Lombardo by telephone on Friday afternoon to tell them Top Rank was accepting their proposal. He also said he made the call to Showtime Sports chief Ken Hershman to tell him about the decision.

"I'm absolutely sick. This has been a physically and mentally very grueling process," duBoef said. "But it's invigorating to see how two major media companies have used incredible resources and assets to show how much they want to be involved in a boxing match.

"Showtime was disappointed and I'm disappointed. You're disappointed when someone puts in a terrific proposal and then you have to tell them they're not good enough because someone came across with a better one, a more appealing map for this fight. It was a tough call to make, especially when you've built relationships. I felt it was appropriate to be truthful and up front with Ken. I couldn't sleep last night. I'm disappointed I had to leave somebody that I have a lot of respect for. The proposals (both networks) put together were fantastic. They were unprecedented. I've never seen anything like it. When you have that it is very difficult to make your decision. I wish both could have distributed the fight."

Arum took Pacquiao away from HBO in the first place because he was looking for a broader platform on which to promote Pacquiao, the Filipino icon and boxing's biggest global star. Arum had hoped he could convince Greenburg to bring in the numerous other platforms at the disposal of Time Warner, HBO's parent company, to help promote the event and boxing. But Greenburg, who resigned July 17 after more than 30 years at HBO, steadfastly refused to entertain the idea, causing Arum to look elsewhere.

He found a willing partner in Showtime, a sister network of CBS, which put its considerable resources behind marketing Pacquiao-Mosley. CBS aired numerous commercial spots during NCAA basketball tournament games and episodes of Showtime's "Fight Camp 360" reality series following the build up to the fight in primetime.

"One of the things that motivated me personally (to make the HBO deal) is the attitude of Plepler and Lombardo," Arum told ESPN.com. "I think they are extremely bright guys and have the same vision that we have to make boxing big-time again and a desire to elevate it on a world stage. With this deal, they brought to bear all the resources of the Time Warner empire.

"HBO can do only so much because of the limited audience it has. I can tell when people are extremely motivated and will put the time and effort in and to have them behind it and working with us on a day-to-day basis, along with the HBO staff, like (HBO PPV chief) Mark Taffet, it will be a home run."

Arum said the deal was for only one fight.

"We're not tying ourselves to anyone," he said. "Let's see how this goes. But I have very high hopes that it will be a blockbuster."

Arum said the goal is not only to do big pay-per-view numbers, but to bring boxing more into the mainstream. With Showtime and CBS marketing Pacquiao-Mosley, it generated about 1.3 million buys, according to Arum -- the most ever for a Pacquiao fight.

Besides the usual promotional tools HBO would typically use for a fight -- including the "24/7" reality series following the buildup, "Face Off With Max Kellerman" and replays of classic Pacquiao and Marquez fights -- Arum said the fight would be promoted across Time Warner's numerous platforms, which includes television networks (such as HBO, TNT, TBS and CNN), magazines (Sports Illustrated and People) and the websites for those outlets. They will be heavily utilized, Arum said. Among the plans, according to Arum and duBoef:

• CNN will show replays of "24/7" episodes.
• Arum and Pacquiao will appear for a joint interview on Piers Morgan's primetime CNN show as well as be interviewed on CNN international programming.
• The fight will be promoted during TBS' coverage of the Major League Baseball playoffs.
• If the NBA lockout is lifted, the fight would also be promoted during TNT's basketball coverage.
• There will be daily coverage of fight-week activities on HBO, including the final news conference and weigh-in.

"Being on shows on CNN, to me, is elevating the sport to new levels," Arum said. "To have the fight discussed on programs that intellectual elites watch is good for the brand. Time Warner is also going to pull out all the stops on their sports programs on TNT and TBS."

Said duBoef: "The currency of these deals isn't about the dollars. It was the currency of who could get my product out to the most eyeballs. It was an analysis. I didn't just do it on a gut feeling. I went through this very strategically and we had it analyzed. At the end of the day, it was HBO, Time Warner who had a better deal across the board."

Initially, Arum said whichever company got the rights to Pacquiao-Marquez III would also get the Dec. 3 Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito rematch, another major fight. HBO PPV did their initial fight in 2008 while Showtime PPV did Cotto's win against Ricardo Mayorga in March.

Arum said he eventually changed his mind about making the two fights a package deal.

"Showtime still has a position on the Cotto fight because they did the last one, so Monday we'll start talking to them," Arum said. "When Todd and I had further discussions and we realized that it wasn't the most advantageous thing to do, to make a package deal. Showtime did such a great job for us on the last Pacquiao fight and it would be important and good for the sport for Showtime to stay involved in these major pay-per-view fights. So if Showtime meets certain proposals that we're going to make, and we get the support we need from them, then it behooves everybody to go with them. That way we keep more people and entities involved and it's great for the sport.

"I don't want to go back to the situation where there is one entity doing all the major pay-per-views and that entity does the same thing over and over and gets into this narrow box, which I felt the pay-per-views were in because they had been successful and we kept repeating the same thing over and over again. That is not a way to grow a sport. You grow it by being innovative and having competition and new ideas."

Pacquiao's lawsuit vs Mayweathers still stands

Only Golden Boy Promotions executives Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer are off the hook in the defamation suit Manny Pacquiao filed two years ago. The case against the Mayweathers – Floyd Jr., his father Floyd Sr., and uncle-trainer Roger – still stand.

"This is just a dismissal against the Golden Boy parties," said Pacquiao's lawyer Daniel Petrocelli. "We may be adding to (the lawsuit) because of additional defamatory statements that the Mayweather folks have put out."

On Tuesday, De La Hoya and Schaefer issued an apology to the Filipino boxing superstar for accusing him in the past – together with the Mayweathers – that he uses performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

The allegations came in the light of the disagreementbetween the camps of both Pacquiao and Floyd Jr. arising from the drug testing procedure to be administered in the supposed mega-fight between the two boxing greats that has been stalled by two failed negotiations.

Both De La Hoya and Schaefer then joined the fray when they expressed suspicions that Pacquiao was using PEDs on the night the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter drubbed the "Golden Boy" for eight full rounds in their celebrated non-title welterweight match on December 6, 2008.

A few months after that disappointing loss, De La Hoya retired from boxing at the age of 36.

De La Hoya and Schaefer's apology paved the way for Pacquiao, to settle the defamation suit he filed against them in a U.S. District Court in Nevada in 2009.

"Richard Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya, on behalf of themselves and Golden Boy Promotions, wish to make it clear that they never intended to claim that Manny Pacquiao has used or is using any performance-enhancing drugs, and further state that we do not have any evidence whatsoever of such use," said De La Hoya and Schafer in a statement.

"Manny Pacquiao is one of the greatest fighters of all time, and we apologize if anyone construed our prior remarks as in any way claiming or even suggesting that Manny uses or has used PEDs."

"It's all by agreement of the parties that the terms remain confidential," Daniel said in an ESPN interview. "Manny is satisfied with the terms of the settlement and the statement Golden Boy issued, and he agreed to the settlement."

Settlement breaks ice, clears way for Pacquiao-Marquez III

De La Hoya's apology came at a time when the former Olympic gold medalist is undergoing treatment for substance abuse in a Los Angeles rehabilitation center.

But Schaefer, in a statement, welcomed the latest development as very beneficial for the business of prizefighting in general. "I hope we can work together again and put great fights together."

"The goal of any promoter is to put together the biggest and best fights. Let's see what the future brings. ... We've broken the ice."

De La Hoya's counterpart at Top Rank Promotions, Bob Arum, is just as optimistic.

"I think this clears the way for future fights with one of their fighters with Manny, all other things being equal," Arum told ESPN. "Prior to the apology we would have not considered it. This (PED accusation) was something directed at Manny. He's accepted this apology and indicated that he has accepted it by settling the lawsuit, so we move on.

"This clears the way for any Golden Boy-Top Rank fight in the future if the fight makes sense for both sides. We shook hands on that after the mediation (two weeks ago)."

Just last month, mediation was reached between Golden Boy and Top Rank after Arum signed Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez to a third meeting with Pacquiao on November 12.

Marquez is a longtime fighter under Golden Boy, but has not signed a new contract offered by the outfit when he's previous deal expired last February.

Although the 37-year-old Mexican was no longer under contract with them, Golden Boy still retained the right to match any offer Marquez will receive until February of 2012.

De La Hoya never matched Arum's offer and allowed Marquez to fight Pacquiao for a third time.

There was no trash talk at the final press conference on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) for the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley bout this weekend at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

In fact, both fighters promised a fan-friendly clash that would provide a storm to follow the comforting tranquility of their pre-fight media engagements.

The 39-year-old Mosley is challenging Pacquiao for the eight-division world champion's World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title on Saturday in Las Vegas.

While the media digs for new angles to a story that boasts no animosity, the 32-year-old Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 knockouts) and the three-division champ Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO) of Pomona, Calif. are content to remind fight fans that boxing is just a sport.

"I'm happy for this fight because there's no trash talking," said the pound-for-pound champion Pacquiao. "It's a good example to the children who idolize the fighters. The best promotion of my boxing career is the Mosley fight because everybody here are friends."

The only contention came from Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum., who took a dig at HBO by saying that the Showtime/CBS aired promotional series Fight Camp 360 will have been seen by four million individual people, while HBO's 24/7 only reaches a third of that.

Still, as Saturday's clash (Showtime PPV, 9PM ET, at $54.95) nears, Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach are just as ready to bring the pain as they are to extol Mosley's pleasant manner.

"I think we'll dominate him if we fight the right fight and win by knockout," said Roach, who will be receiving his fifth Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Trainer of the Year award on Friday at their annual award dinner.

"I'm really proud of Manny for this training camp. From day one, he told me this is not an easy fight. We respect Shane and his camp. I think it's the best training camp we've ever had. We're fighting one of the most crafty guys out there, he's intelligent and experienced."

"I never underestimate Mosley because he's a good fighter," said Pacquiao, who also serves as a congressman in Sarangani province in the Philippines

"If you think he's old, he's not old. He moves like he's 32 years old. He has hand speed, foot speed and he's strong. He knocked [Antonio] Margarito out and I fought Margarito and we finished 12 rounds, so he has the advantage there."

Against other common opponents, Pacquiao holds a 12th round TKO win over Miguel Cotto, who had beaten Mosley by decision. Both hold wins over Oscar de la Hoya, though Mosley's two wins came when "The Golden Boy" was closer to his prime.

Indeed Mosley, who turns 40 in September, is in the twilight of his Hall of Fame career that has rarely seen him in a dull fight. Those exciting match ups have kept Mosley in demand even though his career has slowed down (just eight wins in his last sixteen matches dating back to 2002).

Roach believes you can't underestimate a great boxer like Mosley and he sees the future Hall of Famer as a different kind of fighter than what Pacquiao had faced recently.

"Manny's fought punchers before, but I will say that this is the fastest puncher we've fought and I think speed is more of a factor than power in a boxer. This makes Shane a little more dangerous."

Pacquiao too has seen his share of wars and is in the last leg of his fighting career, though his stately manner on the podium suggests that he is gradually becoming more of a politician than a knockout artist.

Pacquiao said he will wear yellow gloves, which will indicate his support of the anti-poverty campaign of Gawad Kalinga.

Yellow is also closely associated with Cory Aquino, the Philippines' former President and democracy icon. She is also the mother of current President Noynoy Aquino.

"All my life, I've had to fight," said Pacquiao. "As a child I had to fight just to eat. Now when I fight, Filipinos call me 'bayani,' or a hero. I believe this world needs more heroes. The biggest fight in my life is not in boxing, the biggest fight in my life is how to end poverty in my country."

Mosley is also someone fighting for a cause, this one his own. As Hall of Fame trainer Emmanuel Steward once said on air during an HBO telecast, "money becomes a greater motivator each year that passes in a fighter's career."

And a desperate man is a dangerous one.

Manny Pacquiao weighs in lighter than Shane Mosley

(Reuters) - Manny Pacquiao weighed in just two pounds lighter than American Shane Mosley after the Filipino was welcomed by deafening cheers from his supporters on the eve of Saturday's WBO welterweight title fight.

Pacquiao, 52-3-2 (38 knockouts), tipped the scales at 145 pounds in front of a boisterous crowd of about 6,500 at the MGM Grand Hotel's Garden Arena.

Mosley, 46-6-1 (39 KOs), was weighed first and was right on the 147-pound limit for the scheduled 12-round bout.

The two fighters were all smiles as they posed for the photographers for their pre-fight pictures and they embraced one another once that task was done.

"I am just so excited to be in this fight," Mosley, a 39-year-old veteran who is a three-division world champion, said on the stage. "The whole world is watching. It should be great."

Pacquiao, a 10-times world champion in a record eight weight divisions, is a 6-1 favorite to win but he has taken great pains not to underestimate his American challenger.

"I believe that Shane Mosley is a strong fighter, a good fighter," the 32-year-old Filipino said. "He has trained hard for this fight so I have to train hard and focus on this fight."

Pacquiao and Mosley are renowned for being ideal boxing ambassadors and have refused to indulge in any of the pre-bout trash-talking so common in the sport.

NO TRASH TALKING

"This is a good example for the boxing fans and for all the fighters," Pacquiao told reporters earlier this week.

"The fight will be happy and a good example for the children who are idolizing the fighters, especially Mosley and me."

The atmosphere was electric as the two fighters made their way on to a raised stage for Friday's televised weigh-in where former boxing great Roberto Duran and Britain's WBA world light welterweight champion Amir Khan were among those attending.

Shouts of "Manny, Manny" rang out before the tracksuit-clad boxers finally emerged, Pacquiao and Mosley each smiling and waving to the fans before stepping on to the scales.

There were also friendly boos for Mosley who, despite being born in nearby Pomona, California, had a much smaller number of supporters in the arena.

Pacquiao is fighting for the first time since he recorded a ruthless points victory over Mexican Antonio Margarito in November for his eighth world title in an unprecedented eight weight class.

Mosley has not competed in the ring since his draw with Sergio Mora in September.

Pacquiao, already acknowledged as one of the best offensive fighters of all time, is guaranteed $20 million from Saturday's bout while Mosley will earn a minimum $5 million.

By Vivek Wallace: Over the past four weeks, EastSideBoxing's Official Countdown to Pacquiao/Mosley has taken an in-depth look at this pending mega fight from several different angles. Each week, the curve on these angles have gotten steeper and steeper, ultimately culminating into what will soon be a fight of the ages.

Past weeks have taken a look at topics such as "why everyone is wrong about Mosley's chances", to "whether or not Pacquiao's is the most legendary figure of all-time". Last week we touched on the how significant the trainers involved will be to the eventual outcome, and this week, we hone in even closer by looking at those key attributes that will ultimately and inevitably predict who the last man standing truly is. Normally, a tale of the tape compares bodily attributes and sizes, but in typical fashion, we'll again go beyond the lines, uncovering elements that could become key:

IN-RING ADJUSTMENTS: (ADVANTAGE - SLIGHT EDGE TO PACQUIAO)

Typically, a grueling fight is won when one of the opponents involved figures out (with or without the help of his corner) the proper adjustments necessary to overcome his opposition. When you look at the two men involved in this fight, the plot thickens because neither is known for extraordinary ring intelligence, (in the sense of changing game-plans) as both solely and simply use a high leveled assault to ultimately stop the opponent with very little technical boxing involved. Over the past few years we've seen a great improvement from Pacquiao, who went from being a one-handed slugger, to becoming a more deliberate and measured fighter.

Despite the improvement in his overall skills, it remains evident that neither Pacquiao or Mosley have a true plan B that they can execute when their bread and butter fails. Some would view this as a knock on them, but the reality here is that these men are fighters, not boxers. They are boxers by trade, but when the bell rings, they fight! They are absolute warriors, and despite the age of Mosley, the fact that these two men are fighters shows us why there's no such thing as a bad time for a good fight. When the bell rings, don't expect either man to try to shift from Plan A to Plan B. They are fighters, and until one can't fight any more, they will fight!

SIZE/ATTRIBUTES: (ADVANTAGE - MOSLEY)

Manny Pacquaio stands 5'6", has a 67 inch reach, is a natural jr. welterweight, and is a crafty southpaw who is very fast, a cumulative puncher, and has a killer instinct. Shane Mosley is 5'9", has a 74 inch reach, is a natural welterweight/jr. mdwt, is fast, extremely powerful, and also bears a killer instinct. When you look at what Manny Pacquiao has been able to accomplish in his career, it's safe to say he has probably gotten more out of far less. He doesn't have the 5'9" frame or extended arm span, but in this case, perhaps big things do come in little packages, as his results have been just as astonishing, or arguably even more so.

Pacquiao has taken that small frame of his and made up for all weaknesses by adding a killer instinct for the ages, and a workrate that doesn't stop. In recent years we've seen Pacquiao hurt, banged up, and even bruised, but we've haven't recently seen his will to win conquered. He has faced men standing 5'6", he has faced men standing 5'11", and in the end, the results were the same. Despite his stellar track record as a little man doing big things, unfortunately, in this case, it's a little deceptive. Deceptive in the sense that him being capable of doing big things as a little man doesn't quite give him the edge against a bigger man with similar attributes.

With Shane Mosley, you have a fighter very similar to Pacquiao in more ways than many would suggest, and to narrow it down, in effect, the only thing that truly separate the two is age. Everything from the ring entrance filled with smiles and waves to the fans, to the famous 'hit-me-and-I'll-hit-you-back' defense, to the 'stalk-until-they-can't-walk' offense; these men are virtually one in the same. Few men have looked better than Pacquiao in critical areas, but this is one I'd have to lean to Mosley on, as he has knocked much bigger men out with power, where Pacquiao's only way to stop the bigger men he faced was accumulation.

Oscar, Margarito, and Cotto each spoke of the fact that with Pacquiao, you can physically take his punches; however, the problem lies in the fact that so many come from so many angles that most don't often realize they were punched until they (in the words of Oscar) "feel a new spot stinging". In the case of Mosley, these same men each spoke of the thunderous punches they felt, and although two of them survived long enough to hear the final bell, they each gave the nod (in power punching) to Mosley. He is bigger, and has done far more damage to much bigger men. Having a killer instinct to go with that power certainly helps. You have to give him the edge here.

FINAL STRETCH/CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS: (ADVANTAGE - PACQUIAO)

When you look at the past resume of these two men, both have done some amazing things down the stretch during the championship rounds which remain most critical in a fight of this nature. Not too long ago, Shane Mosley dented the once-thought-to-be iron chin of Margarito late in a fight, and previous to that, Shane also stopped the very durable Ricardo Mayorga with only a few ticks left. Mosley has shown time and time again that power can be equally potent at any point in a fight, and this is what makes him dangerous from the beginning to the end.

In the case of Manny Pacquiao, it often seems that this is the very stage where he excels the most. The deep conditioning of Pacquiao can only be rivaled by one man in the sport (Mayweather), and there's no coincidence why many of his close fight decisions have been solidified late, as Pacquiao is known to completely take over fights in the last few rounds, in some cases, even to the point of looking off to the ref to gauge whether or not he should continue his assault. Both men have shown great ability late in fights, but based on conditioning alone, you have to give Pacquiao the edge in this one.

ONE SHOT, ONE KILL: (ADVANTAGE - MOSLEY)

Trying to narrow down this particular topic can be as challenging as walking up an ice slope! You can't think Pacquiao without thinking of the Hatton fight, where the average fight fan in attendance held on to a bucket of popcorn that lasted longer than the opponent! That punch in particular left many viewing him as today's version of "kid dynamite" (Mike Tyson), but a deeper analysis, as I've often told several fight fans, is that this was a very deceptive moment as well.

Without doubt, Pacquiao is a very dangerous puncher, but remove Hatton from the equation, and you'd be hard-pressed to remember the last fighter that had that stuck-to-the-canvas effect after Pacquiao delivered a punch. As a matter of fact.....you'd have to go all the way back to October 26, 2002, in the Philippines to see something even remotely close. Every other victim on Pacquiao's resume since that point some 9 years ago was practically stopped via TKO, meaning more accumulation that absolute stoppage.

A look down Mosley's resume presents a very similar case, as his last true KO stoppage was back in 2001 against Adrian Stone. The difference here is that when you look at the resume's and compare notes, you'd have to agree that Mosley has arguably faced more durable opposition over this time frame and had equally as good results. Mayweather, Mora, Cotto, Collazo, Estrada, Mayorga, Margarito, Forrest (RIP), Oscar, and Wright comprise a list of men who (with the exception of Mayorga) had never been knocked out at the time. In the case of Pacquiao, Margarito had been viciously stopped by Mosley, Cotto had been stopped viciously by Margarito, Hatton had been stopped cold by Mayweather, and the same with Morales and Barrera after their initial encounters with him.

So, when you really narrow down the question of "which man has the best shot at ending the night with one punch", I think you have to go Mosley, as he has proven durable in the midst of much bigger men, and has been able to hurt them far more effectively. Some will say that Pacqiuao stopped Cotto where Shane couldn't; but you have to remember that Mosley stopped Margarito in 9, wherein Pacquiao couldn't. Advantage in the one-and-done stoppage category clearly goes to Shane Mosley.

CONQUERING ADVERSITY: (NO ADVANTAGE EITHER WAY - TIE)

In the past, we've seen both of these men tested, and how they've dealt with it can be an awfully good gauge on what to expect come fight night, as it relates to who actually wins this fight. Like all these other factors, age finds a way to become part of the equation, and in this case, things are no different. Years ago, I think you'd have to go with Mosley in this category, as even when Forrest and Wright were soundly defeating him, and even after he touched the canvas, he remained a very determined fighter and actually made those fights very interesting in spurts.

In recent times, we've seen Mosley at points when he realized that his power wasn't enough to decide the outcome of a fight and he hasn't always looked great. Against Mayweather, after failing to end the fight with his vicious 2nd round bombs, Mosley appeared flustered and was never the same. Against Mora, he couldn't really land those shots, so he once again appeared defeated, failing to overcome this adversity. In the case of Pacquiao, things are a bit different, and it's hard to narrow down whether it's a good or bad thing.

We have seen Pacquiao hurt, and subsequently weather the storm; but what happens when he actually touches the canvas can be down right scary in this equation. Of all the recent fighters Pacquiao has faced, only Mosley has enough speed and power to catch him with a dose of his own medicine; referring to the unseen, yet powerfully ripping shots that often result in unexpected knockdowns. If Mosley scores this knockdown, what next? In the past, every time Pacquiao has touched the canvas (for the most part) he has failed to stand again until the final bell sounded. This evens the playing field. What it essentially equates to is the fact that while Mosley can be taken off his game when things aren't going his way, he has shown he can fight back after being down as well; wherein Pacquiao can weather storms too, but apparently when he's down, he's out!

END ANALYSIS (EQUAL PLAYING FIELD)

At the end of the day, despite the 7 to 1 odds, on paper the elements that count most make this what appears to be an even fight. Then again.....as NBA Hall of Fame head coach Pat Riley once said: "Paper burns"! It's any man's fight, and the man that seizes the moment will savor the moment, as it will be his moment! We now stand two weeks away from this monstrous event and as the moment grows closer, the stakes grow higher. Tune in next Friday as we sink deeper into a topic that apparently has no limits!

Everbody is happy and excited about the fight, you know, about the training and the works, so I'm just good...the odds are going to come down even further when they see us at the weigh-in...Vegas is going to be on fire. I'm excited, my whole team is excited, family, friends, everybody is excited," stated three-division world champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley, who took time out of his Easter Sunday to give us an update on how training has been going for his May 7th showdown with pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao. With less than two weeks left to go before, Mosley is eager and ready for the fight to get here so he can continue the string of upsets that have already taken place this year. Check out what he had to say about the fight and much more, including his thoughts on Victor Ortiz's big win over Andre Berto.

BT: What's up, Shane? How you doing?

SM: What's going on, Ben?

BT: Shoot, you tell me. We got less than two weeks to go until the big fight.

SM: I know, I know. I'm ready to go and get busy.

BT: How's everything been going in camp?

SM: Everything is looking good. My boxing is looking good; everything is good, man. Everything is sharp. I'm faster and better every day. Everbody is happy and excited about the fight, you know, about the training and the works, so I'm just good.

BT: How's the weight looking?

SM: I'm around 152. 151 or 152, so I'm good. Like today, I'm probably like 154 because it's Sunday and I really haven't worked out today, but the weight's good.

BT: You know, the odds have come down just a tad bit in your favor. Now you're only a 6 to 1 underdog.

SM: Oh yeah? Oh, okay. They gettin' the picture I guess. The odds are going to come down even further when they see us at the weigh-in. They're going to be like, "Oh my God. Let's check this man right now. Check him!"

BT: Damn, man, you're shredded up like that already?

SM: Yeah, man. I'm shredded, but I'm going to be even more shredded when fight time comes because I'm going to be lighter. I'm shreddded at 154, but I'm going to be even more shredded at 147 because, you know, I'm coming all the way down, you know what I'm saying? So it's going to really look crazy.

BT: Damn. Do you even care that the oddsmakers have tabbed you as that big of an underdog? Do you feel just a little bit disrespected by that?

SM: Yeah, it's disrespectful, but I really don't care. You know, it's disrespectful and everybody knows that, but I really don't care. I just be like, "Whatever!" What's going to happen is going to happen on May 7th, you know what I'm saying? What's going to happen is going to happen.

BT: Speaking of oddsmakers and upsets, I don't know if you saw the fight, but I'm sure you've probably heard the outcome by now. What did you thing of Victor Ortiz's win over Andre Berto?

SM: Oh yeah, I had to sit and watch that fight just to see what was going on. I thought Victor Ortiz showed a lot of heart and a lot of courage. He did a great job and won the fight.

BT: I think Berto may have bought into his hype a little bit too much and took Ortiz for granted. What kind of advice would give you a guy like Berto, who just suffered his first defeat?

SM: You know what? I mean, it's all about the way you carry yourself and your maturity. I mean, he's been humbled. This has been a humbling experience and the best thing he could do is come back strong. Just come back in his next fight strong; work hard and stop traveling all over the place being Hollywood. Now it's time to get back to business and work back to that world title.

BT: The funny thing is that I don't think he has been humbled and I think he's still going to be a little Hollywood. I'm willing to bet that he probably won't change too much and will just chalk it up to it being an "off" night for him.

SM: Yeah, that's the bad thing, you know? I mean, it's hard. You have to put boxing first. All that other stuff...winning, that brings about all that other stuff that he had, so he has to continue to win. If he's not winning, then he's just going to be another fighter that just had a title for a second.

BT: The latest episode of Fight Camp 360 aired this weekend, but it seemed like it was cut short. It was only 20 minutes long. They're going to be following you guys all the way up through fight week, right?

SM: Yeah. I just finished doing an interview on CBS and Fight Camp 360 was there with me. I did a little something on CBS today.

BT: I don't know if you saw it, but Manny took a little shot at you. It wasn't anything serious, but he was talking about you being an icon and whatnot and kind of chuckled, then someone told him to stop teasing. Do you think Pacquiao has this nice guy persona in the public eye, but maybe he's a little bit different behind closed doors when he's just hanging out with his close friends?

SM: Oh yeah. You can see it. Outside the ring, he's very nice, but inside the ring, he's a killer. That's what he's supposed to be. I mean, he's a fighter. He's the pound-for-pound best and all that stuff. But I mean, he knows how to play the press and play the role, but you know, it is what it is.

BT: So next week is pretty much it as far as training is concerned. You're not going to be doing too much during fight week, right?

SM: Yeah, you know, we're kind of tapering it down a little bit. We're coming in for a landing.

BT: I know I, for one, am ready and pumped for this fight to get here.

SM: Well that's good because there's going to be a lot of activity going on in Vegas. Vegas is going to be on fire. I'm excited, my whole team is excited, family, friends, everybody is excited. It's going to be a teriffic week, the week of May 7th.

BT: Well I was just calling to catch up with you real quick and wish you a Happy Easter my man. Stay off those chocolate rabbits and Cadbury eggs (laughing).

Pacquiao Fans Let’s Not Kid Ourselves, Shane Mosley Is No Slouch

There’s been a lot of commotion on whether the once great “Sugar” Shane Mosley is a worthy enough opponent to fight the current pound-for-pound king Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao.

Mosley is almost 40-years-old and clearly not in his prime years, but a once great fighter is always dangerous, especially when they are counted out in a fight and the fighter they are facing has a style that will accommodate their own.

An example of this is Erik Morales vs. Marcos Maidana. Morales a faded fighter, past his best years, who called out and demanded to fight the most fearsome puncher at 140-pounds, Marcos “Chino” Maidana. Many believed he was crazy, especially after the two beatings he took at the hands of Manny Pacquiao, but Morales saw something in Maidana that he could take advantage of.

When Morales fought Maidana, he had his eye shut in the first round, but he showed us all that he wasn’t one to be counted out, he was out boxing and hurting the younger fighter with only one good eye. Morales proved that even at this stage of his career, that he chose Maidana for a reason, and despite losing on the judges scorecards, he showed us with his stellar performance that you can’t count out a legendary fighter.

Shane Mosley has said that the fight he always wanted was versus Manny Pacquiao. Mosley went to the Wild Card Boxing Club and asked Freddie Roach for a fight with Manny Pacquiao, and Roach denied Mosley the chance at the time saying he was too good.

What Mosley presents is a style that Manny Pacquiao isn’t used to, that of a fast boxer with punching power. Sure, Mosley didn’t look to good against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Sergio Mora, but Shane shines when he has a fighter in front of him who likes to mix it up, and Manny Pacquiao is that type of fighter.

People are counting Mosley out, and a lot Pacquiao fans are taking this fight lightly, already saying that Manny will knock out Mosley. The good thing though is Manny Pacquiao isn’t overlooking Shane Mosley like the fans are, this time Manny wants to make a statement, and he knows that Mosley is dangerous.

But it all comes back to what someone like Mosley sees in Manny Pacquiao. We don’t know his true motive for taking a fight with Pacquiao. It could be for the huge payday, it could be for the challenge, but one thing is for sure, “Sugar” Shane Mosley is no slouch.

Boxing Perspective: Why Pacquiao vs. Mosley Gets A Fail

The announcement of this fight has baffled boxing fans worldwide. According to Bob Arum, president of Top Rank, "Sugar" Shane Mosley was the best option out of the three possible fighters available to Manny Pacquiao: Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Andre Berto.

But does this selection make sense?

It does if you think that Mosley will pacify those critics who say Manny Pacquiao hasn't fought any African-American contenders. Also, this fight serves as further evidence that a battle is going on between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank.

Mosley, who was one of the founding partners of Golden Boy Promotions, split with them because he was upset about not being pushed out front as the most viable opponent over Juan Manuel Marquez.

Golden Boy has Marquez under promotional contract, and was pushing to have the long-awaited Pacquiao vs. Marquez III. Instead, we have the lackluster Pacquiao vs. Mosley bout.

Manny Pacquiao’s advisor Michael Koncz even admitted to the media that the fight would only be competitive for five rounds. Which, I believe, is giving way too much credit to Shane Mosley; he will be out of breath and out of ideas by the third round.

At 39 years of age, Shane Mosley is way past his prime and has not produced an exciting boxing match in years. Mosley’s last two bouts have been horrible and he has shown all the signs of an aging fighter. In his clash with Floyd Mayweather Jr. we saw his lack of strength and stamina. Then you have his fight with Sergio Mora which was hard to watch and boring. During that contest there were more people booing than cheering.

Pacquiao hasn't acknowledged any special focus on this fight. Even Freddy Roach told ESPN news that his fighter is in the best shape of his career, which should scare Mosley.

Fans know that Mosley is at his best when he is faced with an aggressive straight ahead type of opponent. He prefers the type of opponent who tries to assault him head on such as Antonio Margarito. But, everyone knows that is not what he will get with Manny.

The only real reasons to purchase this card will not come from the main event, instead fans will be treated to a fairly good undercard that may just entice them to reconsider and purchase the card for $54.99.

Over the last week, Shane Mosley has been publicly commenting on his chances of beating Pacquiao. Mosley said on Thursday that he would exploit Manny's weaknesses. Mosley has also said that he could KO The PacMan. On Saturday, Manny responded to Mosley's latest comments and told PhilBoxing.com that will not let the upset happen.

"Mosley will come to win, there’s no question about that. A win against me will be big for his career, but I am not going to let that happen. I have been preparing for any type of fight"

All reports from Pacquiao's training camp indicate that Manny is in excellent shape and ready to fight. Since Day 1, Manny has said he would train as hard as he can for this fight. Manny wasn't going to take Mosley light. Unfortunately, many Boxing pundits and fans see things differently.

Since the fight was announced, the majority of boxing critics and fans were protesting this fight as they thought that Manny was taking an easy fight. They perceived that Mosley was too old to fight Boxing's best especially after Mosley lost to Mayweather Jr. last May. However, despite the criticism, Manny believes that Mosley will be one of his toughest challengers ever.

Freddie Roach, Manny's trainer, believes that Pacquiao can finish off Mosley by the 6th or 7th round. I believe that Manny will most likely get the TKO in the later rounds. I see this fight shaping up allot like Manny's 2009 fight against Miguel Cotto, where by the end of the fight, Cotto was a beaten and bloody mess.

Manny almost always respects his opponents and has compassion for them especially after he knows he's beaten them in the ring. In addition to his in-ring compassion, Manny cares about those in need, especially his fellow countrymen. On Saturday, Manny also annoucned that he was going to dedicate his fight against Shane Mosley to Japan and all of those who were affected by the Tsunami. Manny Pacquiao Will Outpoint Shane Mosley in a Surprisingly Good Scrap

The fight is nearly a month away but it's not too early to talk up the biggest fight of 2011. I have already stated why "Sugar" Shane Mosley is more than a live underdog against Manny Pacquiao. And here I will tell you why I think he's going to defeat Pacquiao next month.

I almost had you there for a second, huh?

I don't have the chutzpah to pick the Mosley upset, so I am going to go with my old reliable fight prediction helper. It highlights many of Mosley's advantages but it also tells me why it's still hard to bet against "Pac Man" in this one. You need to know why? Just read below.

Each fighter's competition has been world-class, so this key prediction criteria is a "push." In addition, the fight locale of Las Vegas, Nevada offers neither man a discernible advantage. Mosley's contingent will likely be out-flanked by Pacquiao's and his legion of Filipino (and other) fans, but he's no big fight neophyte. The setting will not be unsettling for "Sugar."

Mosley's major advantage is the fact that he's the naturally bigger and stronger man, as he's fought a significant portion of his career at 147 pounds and 154 pounds. Shane also is very adept at utilizing his upper-body strength and vicious body punches while "in-fighting." If you need proof, look no further than his stoppage of Antonio Margarito. He is also a slightly better defensive fighter.

As in just about every one of his fights, Pacquiao is faster than his opponent. It's a rare situation for Mosley, but he'll be at a speed deficit here. I also give Pacquiao advantages in punching power and ring generalship. Years ago the prospect of my claim would have been suspect, but Pacquiao's meteoric rise in power and skill as he's moved up in weight, combined with Mosley's declining powers, give Pacquiao a significant edge in these critical areas.

Unlike some, I truly expect Pacquiao-Mosley to be one of the more exciting fights of the last 12 months. Sure, Mosley is past his best, but his considerable pedigree and Pacquiao's "ever-so-slight" slippage in recent fights (he got touched a tad too much to my liking against the "slow-as-molasses" Antonio Margarito).

However, when it is all said and done, I expect Manny Pacquiao to place another Hall of Fame scalp on his mantle after he defeats Shane Mosley (UD 12) in one of the more exciting fights we will have seen in awhile. Mosley will survive some scary moments, but so will Pacquiao.

“I’m not going to let that happen.”

This was how World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao reacted on statement attributed to challenger “Sugar” Shane Mosley saying the latter will knock him out in their title bout set May 7 (May 8 in Manila) in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao, who, reportedly, nearly knocked down a sparring partner last Thursday, admitted Mosley, a three-division champion, will be one of his toughest opponent in his career, but added quickly, he’s ready for any type of fight.

“Mosley will come to win, there’s no question about that. A win against me will be big for his career, but I am not going to let that happen. I have been preparing for any type of fight,” he answered when told about Mosley’s prediction made last week in interview with media men.

“Alam naman natin na hindi ganung kabagal si Mosley gaya ni Margarito. May bilis siya, may lakas at magulang din kasi dating kampeon. Pero hindi talaga ako makapapayag na mapatulog niya gaya ng prediksyon niya,” he averred.

“By the way, nasabi ko ito sa isang nag-interview sa akin. I am dedicating nga pala this coming fight, siyempre sa lahat ng ating mga kababayan. Iniaalay ko rin ito sa lahats ng nagging biktima ng nakaraang tsunami sa Japan, “the world’s pound-for-pound king said.

The Filipino ring idol reiterated everything in his training has been going according to plan and he is nearing his fighting form early than he had been in his previous fight with Mexican Antonio Margarito November last year.

“ We’re focusing on speed and head movement side-to-side for this fight because we know Mosley is not that slow so that’s why we’ll apply some techniques that we can use in the fight.
Strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza himself attested to this saying proof of his ward’s being close to being ready was his nearly docking a youthful mate in a sparring session last Thursday.

“Yeah, Manny really pushing himself through his training regimen he almost knock down his sparring partner,” Ariza revealed although he refused to name the guy so as not to ruin his career.

“The kid Manny was sparring was acting a little cocky and was thinking he was doing pretty good,” Ariza said.” Buboy (assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez), ordered Manny to turn the heat on and he lit this kid up with a barrage of combination that sent him back on the ropes, saving him from going down.”
Ariza didn’t say, too, whether the sparring mate was a regular sparring partner or a walk in, which is a normal occurrence at Wild Card Gym.

“That really impressed us all. Freddie, myself, Buboy and several onlookers admitted top the close door session,” he said.

Shane Mosley confident in exploiting Manny Pacquiao's weaknesses

With less than a month left until the first mega-fight of 2011, Shane Mosley is displaying more and more confidence as each day passes. On Friday, Mosley told Boxingscene.com that he believes Pacquiao has flaws within his boxing skills and believes that he will be able to exploit those flaws, ultimately leading to a victory.

"We all have flaws, but are we able to capitalize on those flaws? With Pacquiao, he throws so many punches, he fights with so much fury. But I think I will be able to exploit them. I think it's my speed, the power, even my size, will make it easy to get to those spots."

Unfortunately for Mosley and his supporters, most Boxing pundits and fans believe that Pacquiao will dominate this fight. In fact, most of these same pundits and fans were furious over Pacquiao's decision to fight Mosley because they felt that Mosley was too old and was not a tough enough challenge for Pacquiao.

If Manny does have "flaws", I don't believe Mosley will be able to exploit them. Pacquiao is too fast for Mosley and has enough power to KO Mosley; which would be the first time anyone has ever knocked out Shane. Additionally, Manny's elite level of conditioning and experience fighting bigger fighters will allow him to weather the early rounds and assert his dominance for the rest of the fight.

Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach said on Thursday that he believed Manny would win by the 6th or 7th rounds. Despite the clear advantages for Manny, I tend to believe that Manny will win this one by a late round stoppage (like the Cotto fight) or a decision (like the Clottey and Margarito fights).

In Mannyland: inside Manny Pacquiao's training camp for Shane Mosley bout

Any minute now, this bus will teeter and then topple off the mountainside. The driver has been steering it since 1am, when it lurched out of the Manila chaos down south, and now in the first quiet flecks of dawn five hours later in the northern Philippines, he curls it around cliff edges that could daunt a skydiver.

He does this casually, with no apparent pulse as the female bus attendant alongside him chats as if unaware she soon will join everybody else in careening off an overhang. Out of the window, Filipinos walk towards work and tote along their unmistakable inner toughness.

As the big box lumbers through gumdrop mountain towns, it rolls along roads with edges that have crumbled and spilt off into oblivion, the tyres seemingly a foot from doom with no hint of any guardrails.

Could the best sports story in the world circa 2011 really churn up somewhere in Baguio City, an uncelebrated fringe of the world a few meandering hours from the South China Sea?

Really now. Just look at this hotel. When does somebody as wildly famous as Manny Pacquiao stay extendedly and repeatedly in a hotel this down-to-earth, this downright funky? Here, the Cooyeesan Hotel Plaza hugs a busy curve in a half-million-strong mountain city, all green and boxy and unceremonious, just beneath shanties perched in the hillsides.

Inside, it feels like some eccentric labyrinth that turns up in an REM dream. Here are food stands. There is the big room where the enthusiastic singer Pacquiao crooned with his band during preparation for a previous fight. Here is a big, silent lobby filled with idle furniture awaiting either usage or removal. All around lie the offices of a school of South Korean students taking English lessons and filling 85 rooms.

Stars' hotels surely must be forbidding and foreboding, but the Cooyeesan turns out to be friendly and welcoming. It has a basketball court on the fourth floor and, as training time draws nigh on a Friday afternoon, you might stroll right into the boxing gym on the third.

You might expect refusal at the door. Nobody complies. You might expect ejection once inside. Nobody complies. Instead, you walk right into the preparation lair of a world-renowned athlete and, within moments, begin to learn that Manny Pacquiao craves not so much attention but commotion - from his omnipresent friends and even from outright strangers.

Enough of Pacquiao's old friends and acquaintances stand by - helping with training, wiping off sweat, working security - that within 19 minutes, one has tried to sell you a jacket for 1,500 pesos (about Dh130).

This must be some sort of wonderland. Could you ever get this close to the training of, say, Roger Federer or Tiger Woods? Over there against the wall sits Freddie Roach, who just got 17 offers for his autobiography. He is a trainer who had a pretty good gym going in Los Angeles, his fame budding, when one day in June 2001 in walked a wiry kid from a deep, concentric circle of poverty who turned out to be Manny Pacquiao.

However an award-winning boxing trainer should look, Roach does not look like it, his dark-rimmed glasses suggesting some sort of boxing scientist. Should you approach him as he awaits Pacquiao's arrival from upstairs? In this harmonious realm, yes, you should. With a voice sometimes slowed by Parkinson's disease, a result perhaps of his own boxing career, he talks patiently to any and all who happen by, even one day a man trying to make a local musical involving Moses and boxing.

A moment later, in walks Manny Pacquiao and what happens next stretches belief. This should be a serious period: he's eyeballing May 7, when he will defend his WBO welterweight title against the American veteran Shane Mosley in Las Vegas, yet the workout at the Cooyeesan volleys from deepest seriousness to loosest frivolity and back and forth again.

He jumps rope. The hubbub surrounds in the form of camera crews, one for US television and one for a feature documentary. He continues jumping rope. Some of his chums - his handlers - clown around, and he casts a wary smile sideways while continuing to jump rope. A bell that could perforate eardrums goes off continually. He keeps jumping rope for superhuman time and precision.

He hops upwards into the ring, bounces around a bit and does a mock fade-away basketball jump shot. His fitness guru, Alex Ariza, helps him warm up, gives him water. He leans over the ropes and spits into a bucket, and everybody watches him spit into the bucket, and he proves wholly unperturbed with everybody watching him spit into a bucket.

While one of his assistants and friends, Nonoy Neri, holds Pacquiao's feet to the mat during abdominal crunches, the assistant trainer, Buboy Fernandez, a childhood friend Pacquiao just about lifted off the street down in General Santos in December 1997, a man who nowadays wins training awards and helps man the corner during fights, pokes in with some snapshots. While still supine, Pacquiao flips through them, pointing at some.

Then, a loud and ritualistic sound: Pacquiao has risen to give Neri a thunderous pop on the rear end, sending his rotund friend sprawling and grimacing while the entire room laughs, especially Pacquiao. While fun might happen during the training of many a rarefied athlete, here it seems woven in so intricately as to be enviable.

The soundtrack of a Pacquiao workout proves indelible. Track one: the guffaws. Track two: the remarkable sound of the world's most devastatingly fast punches smacking against the mitts Roach holds. Track three: silence. Everything hushes save for that lousy bell when Pacquiao stops in the corner of a ring, crosses himself and prays for a solid minute.

Track four: After he crosses himself again, racket resumes.

The whole Pacquiao crew moves upstairs a floor towards basketball, and the Roach trainee and British world champion, Amir Khan, whisks in and shakes hands with everybody. In the corner, another Roach trainee, the 23-year-old Filipino featherweight Bernabe Concepcion who also is preparing to fight in May in Las Vegas, casts Pacquiao as a sharer, especially with boxing advice.

"You know, he supports me a lot," says Concepcion, a younger brother of two professional boxers. "He gives anything. If I needed money I could ask him. If I need shoes, he just gives me … He has a big heart. He really loves boxing, and he has a big heart."

If soon lost in the hallways trying to find the basketball court, you might run into Dixon Trajano, the Cooyeesan's manager these past seven years. He says the hotel considers Pacquiao's presence "a great honour" and "a sense of pride". He says Neri uses the hotel kitchen to prepare Pacquiao's food, which includes "native chicken … organic" and "no pork", which prompts Trajano to say, "The Muslims will love him." He says people sometimes leave letters at the front desk asking Pacquiao to help them with this business or that venture or that medical bill.

"The first time I met him," Trajano says, "it was all so overwhelming. I felt like I'm in the presence of excellence. At the same time you notice that the person is different from the boxer. He's a totally different person. He's very quiet and very subdued. He doesn't have any air of cockiness."

When Fernandez first booked the Cooyeesan two years ago before Pacquiao's fight with Miguel Cotto, Trajano says, "We weren't sure if he was really coming. There were no definite plans, no definite schedule. We just reserved the rooms for him." Then, at 7.30 on a Sunday morning, boom, there he appeared, in basement level three for parking, needing guidance to the fourth floor.

That fourth floor boasts a block of 25 rooms for Team Pacquiao, and around some curls and stairwells lies that basketball court. And as the open bustle of Mannyland has begun to set in, soon you might sit courtside as Friday tilts towards evening, watching the world's most accomplished boxer play point guard.

He directs the offence like a thousand similarly diminutive point guards from a thousand big playgrounds who seem to lack any awareness of their height. He looks comprehensively confident. He jacks up shots. He drives for layups. (Nobody plays much defence, it seems.) He laughs at himself when one layup becomes an air ball. He thrills the audience with one layup after he passes to himself off the backboard.

Almost adorably, the ball comes up to his earlobe as he dribbles. His long shorts appear to hog half his height. He plays a full game then staggers to the sideline and says, in Tagalog: "I'm tired."

While the second game drones on, he cranes his neck from his chair, carefully studying plays. From three feet in front, he looks obsessed.

A group of women who appear to be in their 40s or 50s sidle in their pantsuits around the court and up towards Pacquiao. One gives another a sort of shove to combat her shyness. They flank Pacquiao, and Pacquiao's brother Bobby, a former professional boxer, snaps the photo. One woman leans over for a quick chat, which Pacquiao patiently engages.

Soon the game stops and the noise stops and the gym goes silent for a prayer at midcourt, but the clamour restarts. Soon you could become swept right in with the documentary crew and down Pacquaio's hallway and past his affable security and into his hotel suite, where his brother and friends mill around. They try to get you to eat some sort of slippery Filipino concoction involving an egg. They place it on the coffee table.

Boom. Saved by Manny, who has made one of his trademark impromptu decisions that he wants to go to Starbucks. He emerges from his room in a crowd, and the whole human apparatus follows, down three flights of stairs on a Friday evening. A leading Cadillac Escalade carries Manny, Bobby and others. A second monster vehicle carries another group. A third has the film crews. The third passes the second in the chase, and a security man in the second gently admonishes the driver of the third.

The whole thing reaches Starbucks, where Pacquaio will spend two hours because he refuses reclusiveness no matter the fame. News of his presence stirs up the pavement. Shoppers from the attached mall come barrelling around the corner to gawk. Inside, Pacquiao sits at a centre table with his customary white earphones and his customary green tea latte with soy milk.

A man in town with graduates receiving nursing degrees stops to look. Inside, people approach Pacquiao in waves, and he patiently poses with all. His countenance shows no strain. Two women emerge with a photo and begin clattering their shoes merrily on the pavement. Crowds form four-deep outside the windows, then dissipate, then form again through the hours.

On that pavement stands one of various security people who double as Pacquiao's friends, this being Danilo Potot. He first met Manny at 16 in Manila, after Manny had floated in as a stowaway on an 800km boat ride from the southern city of General Santos to expand his boxing scope. "Small," Potot recalls. "Baby face. His shoes were broken."

They shared a tiny room for nearly five years next to the gym, in those Manila days, Pacquiao on the bottom bunk, Potot on the top. When the room ultimately filled with Pacquiao's trophies, the young men might sleep in the hallway. Sometimes they would share a portion of kangkong a leafy vegetable stewed with onion, garlic and vinegar, and that would be their food for the day. The room had no running water, so they would go elsewhere for that.

Pacquaio exercised almost constantly. "He's wishing all the time," Potot says. "Talks about it every day. He wants to be this one", the one he has become. His first professional fight, in 1995, for which he fudged his age to become 18, Potot recalls as going like this: "First round, attack, attack, attack, attack, attack, attack."

Pacquiao worked in construction, then in a bakery. "Earning 500, 300, just to help his mom." He shared elusive food portions with wanting street kids.

"If people around him are happy, he's happy also," Potot says through an interpreter. "He's not like other people when they get" - and then he merged into English for this last word - "rich".

And then, Potot tells a story that just bends the mind. As the most famous man in the Philippines continues greeting awed fans inside Starbucks, outside on the pavement his old friend recalls that less than half a life ago, the young men had enough money to get to a cinema but not to buy tickets.

So they would go, and they would stand outside, and they would look at the movie posters, and they would try to imagine the figures in those posters in motion.

A surprisingly rowdy Friday night at a Starbucks with Manny Pacquiao, and already it has grown clear: this reigning story just will not quit raining surprises.

Shane Mosley (born September 7, 1971) is a professional boxer from Pomona, California. He has won world titles in three weight divisions, and is the former WBA Welterweight Super Champion.

Personal life

His ex-wife Jin Mosley is a Korean American who was born and raised in New York. Therefore, he would always attach the Taegukgi, which is the flag of South Korea to his trunks when he fought. They have three children together, Najee Jamarr, Taiseki Justin and Mee-Yon Jinae. Shane also has one other child Shane Jr., who is following in his father's footsteps and training to be a boxer as well. It was announced on HBO, minutes before his fight with Margarito, that he and Jin had separated. Later, it was revealed that she had filed for divorce.

In 2010, Mosley teamed up with PETA to protest dog fighting and to protest the seal fur trade in Canada.

Professional career

Undefeated Lightweight Champion

Sugar Shane started his pro career in 1993, By 2000 he had fought 34 times amassing a 34–0 (32) record, beating undefeated Phillip Holiday to win the IBF Lightweight title. He made 9 title defenses with all inside the distance, but never unified belts. Mosley relinquished his lightweight title to move up 2 divisions, facing Oscar De La Hoya for his Welterweight title.

De La Hoya vs. Sugar Shane Mosley

On June 17, 2000, Mosley met De La Hoya in Los Angeles for the WBC and IBA Welterweight titles. After twelve rounds, Mosley emerged with a split decision victory. During the fight neither man was in danger of going down, but both had badly swollen faces at the end and De La Hoya was bleeding from the nose for several rounds. Mosley earned a minimum of $15 million, while De La Hoya was guaranteed $35 million. It was later that Mosley was accused of using illegal performance enhancing drugs prior to his 2003 bout with Oscar De La Hoya.

Mosley vs. Vernon Forrest I & II

He ran a successful string of defenses of his Welterweight title (he vacated his title after the fight), but against three unheralded fighters. When he finally did step up his competition, it was against former Olympian Vernon Forrest. Early in the second round, the fighters clashed heads and both staggered backward as referee Steve Smoger called time. Mosley sustained a cut on the hairline. When action resumed, Forrest knocked Mosley down twice more in the round. The final scorecards read 115-110, 117-108, 118-108, in favor of Forrest.

They had a rematch six months later at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indiana, and Mosley once again lost by a unanimous decision.

Bouncing back after Forrest

On February 8, 2003, Mosley's bout with former IBF world Light Middleweight champion Raúl Márquez ended in a no contest when Mosley accidentally head butted Marquez twice in round three, which caused two very bad cuts above the eyes of Marquez.

He and De La Hoya faced each other for the second time on September 13, this time with De La Hoya's WBC and WBA Light Middleweight belts on the line. Mosley defeated De La Hoya by a close 12 round unanimous decision, and joined the exclusive group of world boxing champions that have reigned in three or more divisions. Mosley testified in 2003 that he injected himself with the notorious doping agent EPO as he prepared for his Light Middleweight title fight against Oscar De La Hoya, according to grand jury transcripts and doping calendars.

Mosley vs. Wright I & II

On March 13, 2004, Mosley lost his WBC and WBA world Light Middleweight titles in a unification bout with IBF Jr. Middleweight champion Winky Wright, by a unanimous twelve-round decision.

On November 20, Mosley and Wright fought their rematch, and although it was scored much closer by the three judges (115-113 twice for Wright and a 114-114 tie), Mosley lost by a twelve-round majority decision.

Mosley Vs. Vargas I & II

On September 17, he beat another previously undefeated fighter, Jose Luis Cruz, by a ten-round decision.

Mosley then defeated Fernando Vargas on February 25, 2006 by TKO in the tenth round at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, due to a massive swelling which closed Fernando's left eye. At the time of the stoppage, Mosley was winning on two scorecards 86-85, while Vargas held an 86-85 advantage on the other scorecard. A rematch was announced almost immediately.

Mosley defeated Fernando Vargas in the rematch on July 15, 2006. Mosley dominated Vargas from start to finish, eventually ending the fight via a sixth-round TKO.

Shane defeated Luis Collazo on February 11, 2007, with a unanimous decision after 12 rounds, knocking Collazo down once, to capture the WBC interim Welterweight title.

Fight with Miguel Cotto

Mosley and undefeated WBA welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto met on Nov. 10, 2007, at Madison Square Garden in a fight broadcasted on HBO Pay-Per-View. Cotto beat Mosley in a close fight. Soon after that match, Mosley was scheduled to face Zab Judah in a Welterweight bout in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 31. Due to an arm injury suffered by Judah, the fight was cancelled.

Mosley vs Mayorga

Mosley-Mayorga was originally scheduled for Oct. 11 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and Mosley's wife and advisor, Jin Mosley, told ESPN.com.

On July 18, 2008, it was reported on ESPN.com's quick hits that The fight between Mayorga and Mosley was moved to the Home Depot Center in Carson, California and set for September 27 because of the Pavlik-Hopkins fight agreement for October 18 on HBO PPV. And the good news for fight fans was that the Mayorga-Mosley bout was not to be on HBO PPV, instead it was shown on HBO at no cost.

Shane Mosley Stopped Ricardo Mayorga with one second left in the 12th round of their junior middleweight bout, Mosley led by one point on judge Nelson Vasquez's scorecard and five on Tony Crebs' entering the 12th round. Mayorga had a one point lead on judge Pat Russell's card. The Associated Press had "Sugar" Shane Mosley ahead by three points entering the 12th.

Mosley vs Margarito

Prior to one of the biggest fights of his career, Mosley began training with Naazim Richardson. Mosley regained the WBA Welterweight "Super" championship from Antonio Margarito on January 24, 2009 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Mosley, now 37 years old, came in to the fight as a 4-1 underdog with the bookies after Margarito had spectacularly stopped Cotto 6 months earlier. Prior to the bout nobody gave Mosley a chance of prevailing- everybody believing that Margarito was too strong and that Mosley was too old. The conventional wisdom was that this was a mismatch, which would end in a brutal retirement-forcing stoppage for Sugar Shane. A comparison of their last fights- the aforementioned destruction of Cotto by Margarito and a last-gasp knockout by Mosley in a hard twelve round struggle against Mayorga- did not bode well for Sugar Shane. Some predicted a massacre. And it was - only it was Margarito that was ruthlessly clubbed about the ring, unable to land any meaningful shots.

Mosley eventually TKO'd Margarito in the ninth round, after appearing to win every round up until then, in a massive upset. Sugar Shane utterly dominated Margarito, using his superior hand speed, pinpoint accuracy and countless huge right hands to the jaw, to wear Margarito down and stop him—something that many seasoned boxing observers thought was nigh-on impossible. After knocking him down with a series of heavy overhand rights at the end of the eighth round, Margarito was unable to avoid punches during a heavy barrage from Mosley early on in the ninth, forcing the referee to step in as Margarito slumped to the canvas a second time. Margarito had never previously been stopped. It was a sensational win for Sugar Shane and propelled him back to the top of the tree in the welterweight division.

The fight was marred in a controversy after Mosley's trainer diligently spotted an illegal plaster accessory being added to Margarito's hand wraps, which had to be redone three times before the commission's officials were satisfied.

Mosley vs Mayweather

On 1 May 2010 Mosley fought undefeated Floyd Mayweather. Boxing purists had called for the fight for over ten years. On the night Mosley stunned Mayweather with two right-hand shots in the second round, nearly knocking Floyd down. Mayweather recovered well and dominated the remainder of the fight with superior hand speed, eventually winning a wide decision on the scorecards to hand Mosley only the sixth defeat of his professional career.

On May 22, 2010 Shane Mosley was stripped of his WBA "Super" Welterweight Title, which in turn made "Regular" champion Vyacheslav Senchenko the sole WBA titlist in the welterweight division.

Antonio Margarito Montiel (born on March 18, 1978 in Torrance, California) is a Mexican-American professional boxer. He is a former World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation, and World Boxing Organization Welterweight champion. Margarito's reputation was tarnished by an incident in which his corner is alleged to have tampered with his hand wraps prior to his bout with Shane Mosley, which were found by the CSAC to contain sulfur and calcium which, when combined with oxygen, forms "Plaster of Paris". He's trained by former IBF Super Featherweight Champion Roberto García. Antonio also manages IBF Lightweight Champion Miguel Vazquez. Margarito resides in Tijuana, Mexico with his wife Michelle Margarito. He is known for his iron chin and his brawler-like fighting style.

Amateur career

Margarito compiled a record of 18-3 in his relatively brief amateur career, indicating that he may have turned pro quickly due to financial concerns.

Professional career

Welterweight

Margarito made his debut at the age of 15, beating Jose Trujillo in Tijuana by decision. On April 25, he achieved his first knockout, defeating Victor Angulo in the second round. On October 17 he suffered his first defeat, a six round decision to Victor Lozoya. Over the next six bouts he went 4-2. Following that he went 28-2-1, with notable wins over Alfred Ankamah, Juan Soberanes, future world Middleweight Champion Sergio Gabriel Martinez, Buck Smith, David Kamau and Frankie Randall, a former World Jr. welterweight champion who became the first man to beat Julio César Chávez in 91 fights.

WBO Welterweight Championship

On July 21, 2001, he got his first world title try against southpaw Daniel Santos for the WBO World Welterweight crown, at Bayamón, Puerto Rico's Rubén Rodríguez Coliseum. The fight had to be stopped in the first round as a consequence of a clash of heads that opened deep gashes on both fighters and sent them both to a nearby hospital. Because the fight had not gone four rounds or more for a technical decision to be awarded, it was declared a no contest, and Santos retained the belt.

Capturing the title

Santos then vacated the WBO World Welterweight title to go up in weight and pursue the WBO's world Jr. Middleweight championship, and Margarito was assigned to fight Antonio Díaz for the vacant world crown, in front of an HBO Boxing audience. On March 16, 2002, Margarito crowned himself world champion, beating Diaz by knockout in round ten. He defended that crown with a decision in twelve over Danny Perez Ramírez and a knockout in two over former WBA world champion Andrew Lewis. Lewis was a southpaw and a hard puncher, but had been exposed as having a weak chin. Margarito proved that he has a world class chin. He publicly asked for a unification bout with then WBC and WBA world champion Ricardo Mayorga.

At this point Margarito considered going up in weight, to try to lure Fernando Vargas, Oscar De La Hoya or Shane Mosley into a lucrative fight, or Santos into a rematch at the Jr. Middleweight division. On October 17, 2003, Margarito made his Jr. Middleweight division debut with a two round knockout win over Maurice Brantley in Phoenix, Arizona.

On January 31, 2004, and back in the Welterweight division, he retained his title with a second round knockout of Canada's previously undefeated Hercules Kyvelos.

WBO Light Middleweight Championship

Margarito did face Daniel Santos in a rematch on September 11 of the same year, at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, for Santos' WBO world Jr. Middleweight title. The rematch also ended because of a headbutt, but this time, as the fight had already reached the four rounds mark needed for fights like these to be decided by judges, Margarito lost by a split ten round technical decision. He was down on two scorecards when the fight was stopped.

On April 23, 2005, Margarito retained his WBO world Welterweight title against another Puerto Rican, undefeated world class puncher Kermit Cintron, dropping him four times on his way to a fifth round knockout. This was regarded as one of his best wins.

After almost a ten month layoff, Margarito returned to the boxing ring on February 18, 2006, retaining his title with a first round knockout of Jaime Manuel Gomez, who had lasted eleven rounds with Mosley for the IBF world Lightweight title eight and a half years before.

On December 2, 2006, Margarito defeated future champion Joshua Clottey by a twelve round unanimous decision. Margarito set a Compubox all-time record of 1675 total punches thrown in a twelve round bout.

Losing the title and regaining it

On July 14, 2007, Margarito lost a unanimous 12 round decision to undefeated challenger Paul Williams, losing his WBO belt. After the bout Margarito heavily disputed the decision, claiming that he had landed the most meaningful punches. Williams, however, landed the most punches (outhitting Margarito by almost a 2-1 ratio, and throwing an average of over 100 punches per round) according to compubox.

On April 12, 2008, Margarito engaged in a rematch with Cintron, who had won the IBF welterweight title belt following his loss to Margarito in 2005. In the early rounds, Cintron struck Margarito with several flush power shots to the head, but Margarito remained unhurt and continued to execute a game plan of continuously moving forward and pressuring Cintron. In the sixth round, Margarito landed a liver shot, knocking Cintron out and taking the IBF title. As the referee counted Cintron out, HBO cameras captured Margarito, from a neutral corner, gesturing upward with his arms and urging Cintron to get up so that the two men could continue fighting for a longer period of time.

Tampered handwraps controversy

Controversy erupted before the fight when Mosley's trainer, Naazim Richardson, observed that Margarito had a pasty white substance in his handwraps. One doctor described this material as plaster hidden in the wrapped hands of Margarito, leading to accusations that he may have been trying to cheat. At Richardson's insistence, California State Inspector Dean Lohuis called for Margarito's hands to be rewrapped. According to Judd Burstein, the attorney for Mosley, Margarito had wet pads in the wrapping. Mosley's doctor, Robert Olvera, likened the material to the type of plaster used to make casts. Burstein said he seized the pad removed from the wrapping and another pad found in Margarito's dressing room. Both were placed in a sealed box that was given to Lohuis for further study. The California Department of Justice laboratory later confirmed the substance to be similar in nature to plaster of Paris.

In late January, the California State Athletic Commission suspended Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo, pending investigation. At the hearing, Margarito claimed he did not know what was in the wraps, while Capetillo admitted to making "a big mistake" by placing the wrong inserts into Margarito's hand wraps. The commission voted unanimously to revoke Margarito and Capetillo's licenses for at least one year. While it found Margarito did not know about the gloves, it took the line that as head of the team, he was responsible for Capetillo's actions. Since state boxing commissions generally honor suspensions imposed in other states, this action effectively banned Margarito from boxing in the United States.

In November 2009, it emerged that red stains on the hand wraps Margarito used in the Cotto fight were similar to the stains on the inserts seized before the Mosley fight. This has raised suspicions that Margarito's gloves were loaded for that fight, and possibly others as well.

Pacquiao defeated Margarito by unanimous decision.

Despite his smaller size (5'6 1/2" vs Margarito's 5'11") and lower weight (148 lbs vs. Margarito's 165 lbs)[1] Pacquiao hammered Margarito with his superior speed and technique. Margarito sustained three cuts, prompting Pacquiao to ask the referee, Laurence Cole, to stop the fight. Ringside commentators agreed as well that the fight should have been stopped.

The fight went the distance with Pacquiao winning via unanimous decision over Margarito. Pacquiao almost knocked out Margarito in the 4th round with a left hook to the body and in the 6th round Margarito connected a solid left hook to the body that sent Pacquiao into the ropes and almost down. Judges' scores were Juergen Langos 120–108, Glen Rick Crocker 118–110, and Oren Shellenberger 119–109 in favor of Pacquiao. Pacquiao landed 474 out of 1069 punches (44%) while Margarito landed 229 out of 817 (28%). Out of those punches Pacquiao landed 411/713 power punches thrown (58%) while Margarito landed 135 out of 312 (43%).

Due to his injuries, Margarito's post-fight interview was skipped and he was sent directly to the hospital after the fight. Margarito had to undergo surgery as it was discovered that his right orbital bone had been fractured.

In the post-fight interview, Pacquiao was asked if he held back during the last round, and Pacquiao said he just let the 3 minutes run out and that "Boxing is not for killing" (quote). Pacquiao also stated "I did not want to damage him permanently."

The fight generated 1.15 million buys and 64 million dollars in revenue.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey, billed as The Event, was a boxing welterweight fight for the WBO World welterweight championship. The bout was held on March 13, 2010, at Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington, Texas, United States. This match was put together after the long awaited "superfight" between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. had fallen through.

Negotiations

Following Pacquiao's victory against Cotto, there was much public demand for a fight between Pacquiao (the number 1 pound-for-pound boxer) and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (the number 2 pound-for-pound boxer). Pacquiao reportedly agreed to fight Mayweather on March 13, 2010, for a split of 50 million dollars up front. And it was later agreed that the venue for the fight would be the MGM Grand Las Vegas. However, the bout was put in jeopardy due to disagreements about Olympic-style drug testing. The Mayweather camp wanted random blood testing by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, whereas Pacquiao refused to have any blood testing within 30 days from the fight, because he thought it would weaken him, but he was willing to have blood taken from him before the 30-day window as well as immediately after the fight. Freddie Roach, on the other hand, commented that he would allow blood to be taken from Pacquiao one week before the fight. In an attempt to resolve their differences, the two camps went through a process of mediation before a retired judge. After the mediation process Mayweather agreed to a 14-day no blood testing window, however, Pacquiao refused and instead only agreed to a 24-day no blood testing window. Consequently, on January 7, 2010, Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum declared that the fight was officially off.

As a result of Pacquiao's reluctance to submit to random blood testing, which is not required by the rules of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, some people questioned whether he was using performance-enhancing drugs. The Mayweather camp had repeatedly suggested Pacquiao was using banned substances throughout the negotiations, which resulted in Pacquiao filing a lawsuit for defamation, seeking damages in excess of 75,000 dollars. The lawsuit cited accusations made by Mayweather, Floyd Mayweather Sr, Roger Mayweather, Oscar De La Hoya, and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. The lawsuit claimed that the damaging and unfounded accusations were made out of "ill-will, spite, malice, revenge, and envy." Pacquiao stated: "I maintain and assure everyone that I have not used any form or kind of steroids and that my way to the top is a result of hard work, hard work, hard work and a lot of blood spilled from my past battles in the ring, not outside of it."

After negotiations for the Mayweather fight fell through, other boxers were considered to replace Mayweather as the next opponent for Pacquiao, including former light welterweight champion Paul Malignaggi and current WBA super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman. However, Pacquiao chose to fight Joshua Clottey instead, a tough boxer from Ghana and the former IBF welterweight champion.

The Fight

Pacquiao won every round and ultimately the fight through a unanimous decision. He dominated the punch count throughout the fight. Clottey threw some succesful combinations in the middle rounds, but never produced a sustained offensive. Manny Pacquiao defended his title by unanimous decision, 120-108, 119-109, 119-109. After the fight, Pacquiao returned to Manila. He has reflected on a possible retirement. Clottey captured 'Dance of the Night' award.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto

Miguel Ángel Cotto Vázquez (born October 29, 1980) is a Puerto Rican professional boxer. As an amateur, Cotto represented Puerto Rico in the lightweight and light welterweight divisions at various international events including the 1999 Pan American Games, the 2000 Summer Olympics and the 1998 Junior World Championships where he won a silver medal.

Cotto began his professional career in 2001, and on September 11, 2004, he defeated Kelson Pinto for the WBO junior welterweight championship. He defended the title successfully a total of six times, before vacating it when he ascended to the welterweight division.

On his first match on this division he defeated Carlos Quintana for the vacant WBA welterweight championship. Cotto successfully defended this title against Oktay Urkal, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley and Alfonso Gómez, before losing it to Antonio Margarito. On February 21, 2009, he defeated Michael Jennings to win the vacant WBO welterweight championship. Defending the title against Joshua Clottey before losing it to Manny Pacquiao on November 14, 2009.

Professional career

Early in his career Cotto defeated former world title contender John Brown by decision in the tenth round. He led the score through the entire fight and scored a knockdown in the second round. The judges gave Cotto scores of 100-89 twice and 100-88.

In 2001, Cotto suffered a dangerous injury that threatened his boxing career. As he was driving to the gymnasium at 5 a.m. in the morning, he apparently fell asleep and crashed, breaking his arm and requiring hospitalization.

On September 13, 2003, Cotto defeated Demetrio Ceballos by knockout in the seventh round at Las Vegas. In a fight where Cotto injured Ceballos with numerous combinations in the sixth round, switching between the orthodox and southpaw stances. In the seventh round Cotto displayed an aggressive style that led to the referee stopping the fight with 0:32 remaining in the round. With this, he was ranked number one in his division by the World Boxing Association.

Cotto's first fight of 2004, was a fourth round knockout victory over the former world title contender Victoriano Sosa. This was after an eventful week prior to the fight, which included Cotto having to wait four hours for his luggage to arrive (after a 2 a.m. local time arrival) at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, and almost being removed from the Mandalay Bay Hotel, where the fight was held, by a security guard who thought he was an unaccompanied minor.

On April 8, 2004, he defeated the former world title challenger, Lovemore N'dou, by unanimous decision in Las Vegas. The first three rounds of the fight had a slow pace with neither of the boxers establishing control of the fight. Cotto dominated the fourth and fifth rounds managing to land combinations on N'dou's head. N'dou won the seventh and eighth rounds after landing more accurate hits than Cotto. The last three rounds were even with both fighters establishing short periods of control in the fight. The judges gave Cotto scores of 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113.

Pacquiao vs Cotto fight

On November 14, 2009, Manny Pacquiao defeated former WBO welterweight world champion Miguel Cotto, by technical knockout in the twelfth round, at the MGM Grand Las Vegas, in a fight billed as "Firepower". The fight was sanctioned as a world title fight in the welterweight division, where the weight limit is 147 pounds, however Cotto's camp agreed to fight at a catchweight of 145 pounds to accommodate Pacquiao's smaller physique. Cotto's camp also conceded the larger share of the purse to Pacquiao, who received a 65% share of pay-per-view buys, compared to Cotto's 35% share.

In the opening round Cotto appeared to have the edge, as he connected with solid jabs and managed to pin Pacquiao against the ropes. However, Pacquiao later admitted that he had allowed this to happen, as he wanted to test Cotto's power. From the second round onwards Pacquiao picked up the pace, knocking Cotto down in the third and fourth round, and going on to dominate the later rounds. After a heavily one-sided ninth round in favor of Pacquiao, wherein Cotto received significant punishment, many people thought that Cotto's corner should have stopped the fight. Cotto's wife even left the arena. However, Cotto decided to continue the fight, but could not evade Pacquiao's onslaught, prompting the referee to stop the fight fifty-five seconds into the twelfth round.

With this victory, Pacquiao took the WBO welterweight title, his seventh world championship, and became the first boxer in history to win seven world titles in seven different weight divisions. After the fight, promoter Bob Arum stated that: "Pacquiao is the greatest boxer I've ever seen, and I've seen them all, including Ali, Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard."

The fight generated 1.25 million buys and 70 million dollars in domestic pay-per-view revenue (preliminary figures), making it the most watched boxing match of 2009.
