Use a HETAS- registered installer

All stoves and fires have a nominal output which is measured in kilowatts (kw). Put simply, this measurement describes how powerful your fire is as a heat source. Get the balance right between the fire’s output and the size of the space it is required to heat and you will have an effective and economical heat source. If however, the fire is very powerful but the room is small, you will be forced to run it with a smouldering, slow fire. This means that some of the gasses, or smoke, will escape unburnt through the chimney, creating pollution and wasting energy and consequently money. Conversely, if the stove is not powerful enough, or if the room is too large for the stove, you will be forced to run it at full capacity to feel warm enough. In an ideal world, you will be able to run your stove at a gentle rate, as near to its nominal heating output as possible. This is why it is so important that you get the balance right between the size of your room and the strength of the stove. But how do you find out which nominal heat output is right for your room?

Finding the best nominal heat output for your room?

First of all, measure your room. You will need to know its width, length and height in metres (the following calculation doesn’t work with imperial measurements). If you’re not sure how to go about this, there are plenty of room size calculators online to help you. Then take these measurements and multiply them, then multiply the total by 0.07. The resulting figure is close to the nominal heat output in kilowatts for the perfect stove for your room. Here is that calculation again:

Length (m) x Width (m) x Height (m) x 0.07 = nominal heat output (kw) for your stove

With this simple calculation you will have no trouble in finding a stove that heats your room satisfactorily and economically. Now all you need to do is decide from all of the other fireplace ideas which type of fuel and what kind of design you prefer.

According to British law, all gas engineers must be registered with the Gas Safe Register. This is the official gas registration body for the UK, and until 2009 it was known as CORGI. Its objective is to maintain and improve gas safety standards to the very highest level. There are currently around 125,000 Gas Safe registered engineers, and the registration body works to make sure that all of them are fully qualified to work with gas.

Before any engineer begins work on your home, it is essential that you check they are registered with Gas Safe. All registered engineers will have a Gas Safe ID card, which shows their registration number and on the back it details the kind of jobs they are qualified to do, for example cooker, boiler, pipework, gas fire and so on. The card will have a photo ID of the engineer as well as a hologram so you know it is genuine. Make sure you check the start date and expiry date. If the work is scheduled to be done at a time that falls outside of these dates, the engineer is not qualified to do the job. Double-sided cassette fires
