Experian Hit wise, an online research company, has published a report last week, where it showed the tremendous increase in popularity of online service that are dedicated to sharing video files. The outfit has been conducting the report within a year, starting September last year to this past September. According to its results, websites engaged in video-sharing have accounted for over a third in popularity in the United Kingdom in the past several years. Unsurprisingly, YouTube was right at the top of the list, gaining for around 70% of this new traffic increase.

The conducted research revealed that music became the main reason liable for such massive wave of British Internet users paying their attention to online video-sharing services. According to the results, 33% of the hits were related to music. Interesting enough, the hits with the biggest number were related to Lady Gaga!
While music was number one in the list of people’s interests, TV shows were on the second place, accounting for 17% of the traffic. As for films, they only occupied 11%, followed by gaming content that accounted for 10% and, in the end, news could only boast 9% of the traffic.
As for the figures that anyone can understand, the report provides the following: first of all, watching videos takes British users about 240 million hours every month from their time. For example, YouTube alone accounts for over 180 million hours from that watching time.
Meanwhile, the report is also very edificatory about the social networking services – it reveals that websites like Facebook and Twitter occupy approximately 800 million hours from British users’ time. At the moment, Google and Facebook are followed by YouTube in terms of popularity in the United Kingdom.

Microsoft improves file management in Windows 8

The team behind Microsoft's next-gen operating system has issued a new update on the Building Windows 8 blog, this time detailing a few improvements to things like copying, moving, renaming and deleting files. While that's hardly something to get excited about, the software giant says these four basic functions account for 50% of all Windows Explorer usage in Windows 7, and thus they want to make sure that it is a great experience.

Microsoft had three goals in mind: creating one unified experience for managing and monitoring copy operations, removing any distractions so users only see key information, and putting people in control of their copy operations.

The first change you'll notice is that Windows will now use a single dialog box for multiple file operations rather than opening a number of them. The updated file dialog allows you to cancel jobs individually or pause any of them with the click of a button in case you want a specific job to finish sooner. Users will also be able to click and open the source or destination folders when copying -- sort of like browsers' download managers have been doing for a while.

Clicking on the more details button will open a real-time graph that shows the current speed of your operation as well as the time and number of files remaining. Microsoft's Alex Simons, director of program management on Windows engineering, commented that estimating the time remaining to complete a copy is nearly impossible to do with any precision because there are many unpredictable and uncontrollable variables involved. For this reason they have focused on tweaking the Windows 8 Explorer interface to play up elements that can be detailed precisely.

Lastly, Microsoft is also revamping the way Windows handles "file name collisions" when copying a file to a location where a file with the same name already exists. The new dialog box shows thumbnails for each file with all relevant information besides them so it's easier to identify which ones you want to keep.

A recent study into the face recognition instruments used by social networks has revealed the alarming ease with which private data can be exploited.

For a couple months already the world has been gleefully uploading out-of-focus holiday photos onto Facebook in order to try a new feature, while experts point at growing concerns about the use of automated instrument to identify people in the pictures. In June 2011, Facebook claimed it would be using the tools to “tag” account holders automatically, and the feature came as a default one, which means users had to go out of their way to turn it off.

At the same time, newly launched social network Google+ appeared to offer a more customizable approach to data sharing, but the same study proved that there was still cause for concern. The researchers managed to identify subjects and find out their social security numbers with the help of just a webcam and Google’s facial recognition software.
By comparing pictures available on the Facebook user profile pages, the researchers managed to work out the identity of 30% of photographed people in the matter of minutes. Besides, in 27% of cases they managed to very simply find out the first 5 digits of a social security number, right from harvested data. They did it by obtaining simple user-submitted data most often available on profile pages, such as the date of birth.

Why is this tool harmful? Imagine a burglar snapping someone leaving the house and using social network to find out their working schedules or vacation. That is just one example. Apparently, you don’t have to have a profile picture on Facebook, and can disable the face recognition, but in most cases, it's not something a lot of users will consider. In order to prove this point, the researchers have created a smart phone application able to identify anonymous members of the public right on the go, along with their social security number. Although they didn’t plan to post the data to the Android Market, it showed a disturbing picture of the ease with which people can manipulate face recognition technology.

The representatives of the privacy watchdog Big Brother Watch claimed that more should be done to make sure that the internet users are aware of the potential danger of social networks misuse and recommended Google and Facebook to use such tools on an “opt in” basis only.

iTransmission is a fully-featured native BitTorrent application for iPad and iPhone, running iPad iOS 3.2 and above, and iPhone iOS 4.0 and above.

Microsoft Will Personalize Online Searches

Microsoft is trying to make the rapidly growing flood of information on the Internet more structured, user-friendly, and accessible. In order to do so, it launches its new personalized search engine called Emporia.

A team of 5 developers from Microsoft scientists are reported to be working in Cambridge over a new intelligent search engine, which would be able to learn and reveal search results depending on the user’s individual needs. One of the Microsoft managers, Ralf Herbrich, has updated attendees at the conference in Germany, bringing a prototype of the search engine.
The service works the following way: in order to tell whether the data is relevant for an individual user, the new intelligent engine analysis information contained in the posts on their social networking services, such as Facebook and Twitter. The developers claim that the role of knowledge and specific experience they can receive from all social networks is becoming more and more important.

The prototype of the search engine Emporia presented at the conference was ready to use on the mobile phones running Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7. Moreover, the engine is already in the top 10 applications on Microsoft’s Marketplace. The service is reported to be able to analyze news online streams, search for keywords and key categories of the information, and filter the interesting stories. Emporia’s users are further able to refine an original list of hits by following individuals and sites.
Microsoft believes that personalized appraisal, if combined with cross-referencing personal information, can eventually result in the better hit lists that are more relevant to the users’ personal interests.

Final Image

Have you ever wanted to use your mind to move an object? Use the Force to fling things out of your way? Unfortunately, we all know those types of abilities are impossible but using the power of Photoshop anything can be accomplished. In today’s tutorial we will demonstrate how to create a powerful mental wave effect using Photoshop. Let’s get started!

Step 1

Open a new document. I used 800x600px. Look for a road photo on the Internet. The one I used can be downloaded here. After downloading, place the photo in your document.

Step 2

Now we need a photo of a person. The one I used can be found here. Once you have your photo, it’s time to extract the guy from the background. Using the Pen Tool(P) create a path like in the image below. After that go to the Paths Palette and create a selection from that path. Then go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection. Lastly, I named this layer “dude.”

Step 3

Go to Edit > Transform > Scale and reduce the size of the guy. Then go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal. We do that to match the light direction.

Step 4

Go to Image > Adjustments > Curves. The idea here is to darken the guy a little bit so he will fit better with the background. Use the image below as a reference.

Step 5

Holding Cmd/Ctrl click on the mask thumb of the “dude” layer. That will create a marquee selection of the guy. After that create a new layer. Rename it to “shadow” and fill it with black. Then go to Edit > Transform > Distort and move the vertices to make the shadow in perspective. The last thing here is go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

Step 6

Grab the Ellipse Tool(U). Select Paths instead of Shape Layer. Create a Circle, like the image below. After that grab the Direct Selection Tool(A) and adjust the bottom of the circle.

Step 7

Create a new layer. Rename it to “clouds.” Then go to Filter > Render > Clouds. While holding Alt, click on Clouds. After that go to the Path’s Palette and create a selection from the path and mask the layer.
Tip: As you will be using the Render > Clouds, you will probably need to apply the filter several times until you got the clouds just right. Keep working with it until the light and dark areas are in a good position.

Step 8

Go to Filter > Liquefy. In the Liquefy Dialog Box select the Bloat Tool (B). Then for the settings use: Brush Size 550, Brush Density 100, Brush Pressure 100, Brush Rate 60, and Turbulent Jitter 75.
Then select the Show Backdrop Option. That will allow you to see the clouds and the background. It will be necessary to use the Bloat Tool in the right place. Click a few times and deselect the Show Backdrop. Then you will see the effect and will be able to repeat it more times in the correct place.

Step 9

Change the Blend Mode of the cloud layer to Soft Light. Then create another layer and rename it to “Clouds 2″ and repeat Steps 7 and 8. We will need another cloud to make it more turbulent. This time, however, use Multiply for the Blend Mode.
After that, create yet another layer. Rename it to “Clouds 3″ and repeat Steps 7 and 8. For this layer use Color Dodge for the Blend Mode. The last thing here is with the Eraser Tool (E) delete some parts. This layer is used to give highlights to the clouds.

Step 10

Group the “Clouds 3″ layer and go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. After that, select the Brush Tool (B), give it a black color, and mask some parts of the clouds that are close to the ground.

Step 11

Select the “Clouds” layer and go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen More. Then repeat this Sharpen filter on Clouds 2 and 3 layers.

Step 12

Create a new layer. Rename it to “Glow.” Fill it with white and go to the Path Palette. Create a selection from the clouds path as we did in Step 9. Then mask the layer.
After that go to Layer > Layer Style > Outer Glow. Use the default settings. Then go to Layer > Layer Style > Create Layer. This command will create another layer from the Outer Glow. You can delete the white layer and leave just the Outer Glow layer.

Step 13

Create a folder called “Lights.” Move the “Glow” layer to this folder. Next select the “Glow” layer. Then go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. Then select the Brush Tool, black for the color, and start masking the glow. We need just the outline; however, some bright spots in the middle will give a nice result.

Step 14

Create a new layer beneath the clouds group. Using the Elliptical Marquee Tool create a selection like the image below. Fill the layer with black and use 40% Opacity.

Step 15

Go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. After that select the Gradient Tool(G) and use a black and white gradient. Then mask the layer, like in the image below.

Step 16

Duplicate the layer and go to Layer > Layer Mask > Apply. Then go to Edit > Transform > Distort. Repeat the same thing we did for the shadow of the guy on this layer. Group these two layers and rename the group to “Shadows.”

Step 17

Create a new layer right above the road photo. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds. Then go to Filter > Distort > ZigZag. Use 100 for the Amount and 5 for the Ridges. For the Style use Pond Ripples.

Step 18

Now go to Edit > Transform > Distort. Distort the layer until you get the right perspective. After that, change the Blend Mode to Overlay. Again, as we are using Render Clouds, the results may vary so you might need to erase some parts to make it more realistic.

Step 19

Create an Elliptical Selection like the image below. Then fill it with black. After that, create another Elliptical Selection, but smaller. Then delete that part of the layer. With the Magic Wand Tool(W) select the black part of the layer.

Step 20

Duplicate the road’s layer and select it. Make sure that you still have the Marquee Selection from the Step 19. Then go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection. You can delete the black ellipse layer from the Step 19 or just hide it.
Go to Layer > Layer Styles > Bevel and Emboss. This is another way to create the ripple effect. You could use Displace as well.

Step 21

Go to Layer > New Layer Fill > Gradient. Use Radial for the Style. For the colors use #ddc396 and #2f1e00. Change the Blend mode to Color Dodge

Step 22

Here I used another image from Stock.Xchng, image. Just place it on top of all layers and change the Blend Mode to Overlay.

Step 23

Now let’s make some adjustments. First, lets darken our Magneto dude a bit more. Select the Burn Tool(S) and burn the back of the guy. After that, change the Blend Mode of the “ripples” layer to Soft Light. You can delete some parts of the clouds as well.

Step 24

Create a new folder, beneath the “dude” layer. Name the group “power” and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. After that, create a new layer inside of this group. Then using the Brush Tool with white color, create some lights coming from the hands of the guy. Tip: use a regular brush with 0% for the hardness.
After that you create another layer. Use some brushes to add more effects. I used some abstract brushes from http://brusheezy.com. Then add a Pink Outer Glow Layer Style.

Step 25

Import the truck image, you can download it at image. Then with the Magic Wand Tool(W) select and delete the background of the photo. Leave just the truck. After that go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal. Move the truck to the side of the road.

Step 26

Go to Image > Adjustments > Curves and make the truck a bit darker. After that, using the Rectangular Marquee Tool(M), create a rectangular selection a bit bigger than the truck. Then go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur. For the settings use Amount 2, Method use Spin, and set Best Quality. Next go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Then use -75 degrees for the angle and 3 pixels for the Distance.

Step 27

Now we will create the truck’s shadow. To do that select the Truck’s layer, click with the right button of the mouse and choose Select Pixels. Then create a new layer and fill it with black. Put this layer beneath the truck layer and go to Edit > Transform > Distort. Distort the shadow to make it look more real. Then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Change the Opacity of this layer to 60%.

Step 28

Group the truck and the shadow layer and rename it to “truck.” Then organize your folders in the Layers Palette.

Conclusion

You can add more elements to the image, like a traffic cone or more cars. But always change the curves in order to make the objects have the same lighting. That will make the image more realistic. For some effects, there will be many other ways to achieve a similar result. Experiment with different methods of achieving an effect, like we did with the ripples. Finally, stick with the ones you think are the best for that image.

Apple iphone 5 expected in september

Apple's next-generation iPhone will have a faster processor and will begin shipping in September, according to three people with direct knowledge of the company's supply chain.
The production of the new iPhone will start in July or August and the smartphone will look largely similar to the iPhone 4, one of the sources told Reuters.
The iPhone – introduced in 2007 with the touchscreen, on-demand application template now adopted by its rivals – remains the gold standard in the booming smartphone market.
Reports on the timeline of the new iPhone launch vary, though it is largely expected that Apple will likely refresh its iPhone 4 later this year. It was introduced in June 2010 by chief executive Steve Jobs and shipped in the same month.
The timing would mean a delay from the usual 12-month refresh cycle for the iPhone since its introduction in 2007, when new versions have been shown off at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. That is presently scheduled for 6-10 June.
The sources declined to be identified because the plans for the new iPhone were not yet public. An Apple spokeswoman in Hong Kong was not available for comment.
The iPhone is one of Apple's most successful products, with more than 16 million sold in the last quarter of 2010. It accounted for more than a third of the company's sales in the quarter.
Apple sources many of its components from Taiwan-based suppliers, many are expected to benefit from a rise in sales as some of them rely on the US company for about 20-40% of their business, said Vincent Chen, an analyst at Yuanta Securities.

"For some suppliers, Apple is their cash cow, or their bread and butter," Chen said. "With all these versions being launched so frequently, it will be the so-called low-margin suppliers, such as those that assemble the phones, who will benefit the most."
Suppliers to the new iPhone include camera module maker Largan Precision, touchscreen panel maker Wintek Corp and case maker Foxconn Technology, two of the people said.
The companies would begin production either in July or August before shipping components to Hon Hai Precision Industry, flagship of Foxconn, for assembly, they said. Officials at Largan, Wintek and Foxconn declined to comment.
On Wednesday, Largan's Taipei-listed shares ended up 3.7%, Hon Hai rose 4.3% and Foxconn rose 6.6%, outpacing the benchmark Taiex share index's 2% advance.
Apple, a big purchaser of touchscreen displays and flash memory, is also dependent on Japan for some of its key components, sparking concern that the disruption due to the crisis there may hurt its gross margins.
But other reports have suggested it moved quickly after the earthquakein March to secure supplies from other sources.
Apple is expected to report another spectacular quarter on Wednesday evening, tempered by growing caution over how supply constraints will squeeze margins and restrain iPhone and iPad sales. Early estimates suggest it will have sold 18m iPhones and between 4m and 7m iPads in the quarter.

Create a Futuristic, Grungy Metal Text Effect

Step 1

Create a new document with any desired size, in this case I made the document 1920px wide and 1080px high at a resolution of 300ppi. Next, change the background color to #272727.

Step 2
To get the scratched concrete look, I used a set of scratch brushes found here. First, create a new layer and call it "Scratches 1" or whatever you prefer, then pick a scratch brush of your choice with a black foreground color and click once on the stage, making sure it covers the whole stage. Next, duplicate that layer you just created by pressing Cmd/Ctrl + J and call it "Scratches 2". Invert this layer by pressing Cmd/Ctrl + I and change the opacity to 50%. Now nudge the "Scratches 2" layer 1px Down and 1px Right to create a bevel effect. Resize the layer if needed to cover the whole page.

Step 3

Let’s get started with the text. Write the text of your choice and center it on the screen. In this case I wrote "TUTSPLUS + " with the Acens font at a size of 65pt.

Step 4

Next, apply these layer styles. You can mess around with the colors to get the effect and tone you wish to achieve.

Step 5

Now we add the scratches on the metal. I’ve used the default Photoshop brushes in this case, mostly the Dune Grass and Grass brush.

Create a new layer and call it "Metal Scratches". Set the Opacity of that layer to 50%. Next, apply the following layer styles to the layer.
After you’ve done that, keep the layer selected and Cmd/Ctrl + Click the Text layer to place a marquee around it. This will make sure you only draw in the selected area. Now add the scratches by painting them in from the edges of the text. Don’t worry about messing up, as that will be fixed later on.

Step 6

After you’ve created the metal scratches and are satisfied with the overall look, let’s start with the removal of the excess scratches. As you can see there are scratches in the dark and bright areas in the image above, which will make the scratches look fairly unrealistic. With the layer still selected, get out the Eraser tool (E) and change the size to 10px with a hardness of 0%. Then erase the scratches in areas such as highlighted in the image below.
Tip: Make sure you only Touch the highlights, as we still want a little of the scratches to show in those areas.

Step 7

Once you’re satisfied with the results, it’s time to add the neon lights. Select the Shape Tool (U) and pick the Rounded Rectangle. Set the corner radius to 2px and draw this shape somewhere inside the long parts letters, making sure it is half the width of the area you’re placing it. And make sure not to cover the ends of the letters, as we still need to add screws there.

Add the following layer styles to one of the shapes. Then just copy the layer style from the shape and paste it on the rest of your shapes to save time. If you wish to reduce the scratches behind the lights, just select the "Metal Scratches" layer and run the Eraser (E) along the lights.
Step 8
Next, let’s add the grunge. Create a new layer above the Lights, call it "Grunge", and set it to Overlay. Pick a brush that you think will be great for adding some grunge. In this case, I used the default Photoshop brushes, primarily the watercolor brushes near the bottom of the Default Brushes. Select a brush, then Cmd/Ctrl + Click the Text layer to place a marquee around it. Then just paint in the grunge.
After You’ve painted in the grunge, make sure Your foreground color is set to Black and Your Background color is set to a shade of Grey, then go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise and add 10%, Gaussian, Monochromatic Noise.
Step 9
Now to add the Screws. Since there is no brush for screw heads, we need to make our own brush for this. Create a new layer and draw a black sphere shape. Duplicate that shape and squeeze it sideways, change its color to grey, duplicate it again and rotate it 90 degrees.
Now merge the 3 shapes and Cmd/Ctrl + Click the layer it created to place a marquee around the screw head. With that selected, go to Edit > Define Brush Preset. Name the new brush "Screw Head". After that, You may remove the layer with the Screw Head.

Step 10

Create a new layer and call it "Screws". Next, apply these layer styles to the "Screws" layer.

Now pick the brush You’ve just created, change the size to 10px, and with the "Screws" Layer selected, click on the ends of each letter, or where ever You want to place a screw.

Conclusion

Lastly, let’s create the Letterbox Effect. This is made by placing 2 black rectangles on the image, one on the top, and one on the bottom. I made mine 100px tall, but it doesn’t really matter how large you make them, as long as they don’t overpower the image itself.
Once you’ve added those, you’re done. Take your time, as you will get a much better result. And you don’t have to stick to the default Photoshop brushes for the scratches and the grunge. If you have better ones, use them.

Hacker Group Switched to UFO Hoaxing

Worldwide known hacker group Anonymous decided to switch its efforts at hacking off UFO enthusiasts instead of annoying the powerful industry.

Anonymous members have agreed on the date they will start action: on May 22, numerous UFO websites will be flooded with fake reports of a triangular unidentified flying object. The operation was naturally
codenamed “Operation UFO”, and is intended to provide the members of Anonymous group with long hours of entertainment after the story is caught up with the mainstream media. The hackers hope that the story will receive enough attention and become "reality".

Anonymous expect that on May, 23rd, the newspapers will shout about the UFO postings. Moreover, Ghost theory has even opened a book on whether this story will be linked with terrorism, or with the fact that the birth certificate of the US president was signed by ET.

The members of the Anonymous agreed to tell the same story about how they’ve seen "a triangle of about 8 yellow lights in the sky". While the majority of hackers will report the event on specialized websites, the boldest ones are even going to call hotlines. The intent is to create the sudden influx of similar reports, which in its turn will convince UFO enthusiasts that something really is out there. In other words, many people should believe that aliens really want to make contact on Sundays.

The only problem for the hacker group is that all their secret great plans are discussed on the Internet first. Therefore, it would be quite difficult to pull off a surprise. This may end up with the news sites, waiting Anonymous' next DDoS attack, simply writing a story about UFO instead. Meanwhile, if any of the mainstream papers hurry to publish the story without double-checking on it, they would get all they deserve.

King Of Action - Sylvester Stallone ( Rambo )

Born on July 6, 1946, in New York's gritty Hells Kitchen, the young Stallone attended the American College of Switzerland and the University of Miami, eventually obtaining a B.A. degree. He got a crucial career break alongside fellow young actor Henry Winkler, sharing lead billing in the effectively written teen gang film The Lord's of Flatbush (1974). Further film and TV roles followed, most of them in uninspiring productions except for the opportunity to play a megalomaniac, bloodthirsty race driver named "Machine Gun Joe Viterbo" in theRoger Corman-produced Death Race 2000 (1975). However, Stallone was also keen to be recognized as a screenwriter, not just an actor, and, inspired by the 1975 Muhammad Ali-Chuck Wepner fight in Cleveland, Stallone wrote a film script about a nobody fighter given the "million to one opportunity" to challenge for the heavyweight title.

Stallone followed Rocky (1976) with F.I.S.T (1978), loosely based on the life of Teamsters boss "Jimmy Hoffa", and Paradise Alley (1978) before pulling on the boxing gloves again to resurrect Rocky Balboa in the sequel Rocky II (1979). The second outing for the "Italian Stallion" wasn't as powerful or successful as the first "Rocky"; however, it still produced strong box office. Subsequent films Nighthawks (1981) and Victory (1981) failed to ignite with audiences, so Stallone was once again lured back to familiar territory with Rocky III (1982) and a fearsome opponent in "Clubber Lang" played by muscular ex-bodyguard Mr. T. The third "Rocky" installment far outperformed the first sequel in box office takings, but Stallone retired his prizefighter for a couple of years as another mega-franchise was about to commence for the busy actor.
The character of Green Beret "John Rambo" was the creation of Canadian-born writer David Morrell, and his novel was adapted to the screen with Stallone in the lead role in First Blood (1982), also starring Richard Crenna and Brian Dennehy. The movie was a surprise hit that polarized audiences because of its commentary about the Vietnam war, which was still relatively fresh in the American public's psyche. Political viewpoints aside, the film was a worldwide smash, and a sequel soon followed with Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), which drew even stronger criticism from several quarters owing to the film's plotline about American MIAs allegedly being held in Vietnam. But they say there is no such thing as bad publicity, and "John Rambo's" second adventure was a major money spinner for Stallone and cemented him as one of the top male stars of the 1980s. Riding a wave of amazing popularity, Stallone called on old sparring partner Rocky Balboa to climb back into the ring to defend U.S. pride against a Soviet threat in the form of a towering Russian boxer named "Ivan Drago" played by monosyllabic Dolph Lundgren inRocky IV (1985). The fourth outing was somewhat controversial with "Rocky" fans, as violence levels seemed excessive compared to previous "Rocky" films, especially with the savage beating suffered by Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers, at the hands of the unstoppable "Siberian Express" Vietnam veteran Rambo (2008) will reappear after a 20-year hiatus to once again right wrongs in the jungles of Thailand.
Love him or loathe him, Sylvester Stallone has built an enviable and highly respected career in Hollywood; plus, he has considerably influenced modern popular culture through several of his iconic film characters.

Metal Band Criticizes U2 Band Manager’s View on P2P

Philly Byrne, the frontman of Gama Bomb is astonished that U2 Band Manager Paul McGuinness thinks introducing a “three-strikes” system to punish unauthorized file-sharer is better than bringing them to court, because both of the ways are a prosecution of the people musicians rely on. In addition he approves the idea of free content as a way to gain profit, and believes that the freely distributed albums help to get record tour profits.

Recently, Paul McGuinness, the U2 band manager, again criticized peer-to-peer networks in his article, and also offered there the solutions to the ailing music business. After the article came to Philly Byrne’s hand, who is Gama Bomb frontman, he was apparently astonished, saying that McGuinness was extremely short-sighted on the actions needed to be taken. The article, in his opinion, is filled with logical blind-spots, considering the current state of the industry. Although McGuinness has got the numbers right, the headspace went all wrong.
The first thing that Byrne criticizes is that while McGuinness admits that suing individual users is ineffective, he still advocates a “three-strikes” system which is “better” alternative. However, Byrne believes that disconnecting file-sharers from the web is just a persecution to the people performers rely on.

The next issue in question is the McGuinness’ claim that the record business can only have very little success in its attempts to “fight free with free,” trying to get revenues from merchandising and similar things, other than the listener’s wallet. Byrne pointed out that record labels even used to buy up merchandising companies to get a bigger cut of the action.
As for the inability of the music industry to “fight free with free,” Gama Bomb succeeded in this kind of promotion, providing a bright example of the opposite. The band understands that the only way to live out in our days is to stop perceiving the P2P as theft and look for the ways how to profit from it. Byrne can prove that free albums can be the key to success, because they can generate record tour profits by expanding the fanbase. The band recently distributed free copies of its 3rd album, and it was still selling no worse than their 2nd album. They also get paid more for gigs and manage to sell more merchandise. As you can see, the money is still made from music fans, but in the other way.

A Great Female Guitarist - Orianthi Panagaris

At 24 years old, Orianthi has already experienced what most aspiring musicians only dream of. She's opened for her hero (Steve Vai), backed an Idol (Carrie Underwood), traded solos with a legend (Carlos Santana) and shared the stage with the King of Pop (Michael Jackson). What's left to conquer? The world stage, for one, and this guitar wunderkind has her sights clearly set on the road ahead.

After a performance with Carrie Underwood on stage at the 2009 Grammy Awards the blogosphere was buzzing with news of this little-known guitar prodigy. It prompted Michael Jackson to call with an offer for her to be his guitarist for his dates at the O2 Arena in London. When offered the gig in Michael Jackson’s live band, Orianthi joined a prestigious line of guitar players including Eddie Van Helen, Santana, Slash, Steve Stevens, Jennifer Batten and Larry Carlton. Sadly the tour was not to be and music lost an icon. “Working with Michael was a life-changing experience,” Orianthi reflects, “One I will never forget.”

Her story starts in Adelaide on the southern tip of Australia where, at the age of six, Orianthi began taking an interest in her dad's record collection. "Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Cream, Santana… he was into guitar players that are real songwriters," she boasts. Growing up in the 80s, a decade remembered for its many guitar greats, Orianthi also listened to a lot of Whitesnake, Van Helen and Def Leppard. Her father, who used to be a player in a Greek band, also kept plenty of instruments around the house, and it didn't take long before Orianthi strummed her first chord. Mastering the six-string came naturally."When I was 11, Carlos Santana came to play Adelaide and that show really affected me," she recounts. “I begged my dad to get me a second hand electric guitar so I could be like Carlos, and that was it, no more acoustic. After that, I would buy all of Carlos' videos — on VHS! — which I kept rewinding to try and learn his solos. I totally wore out the tapes."

Some seven years later when Carlos Santana passed through Adelaide again Carlos' brother arranged a sound-check meeting between the guitar god and his young disciple after hearing some of her music. A sound check jam evolved into an invitation to join him on stage where Orianthi played for about 35 minutes and took a solo in front of a hometown crowd. Performances, tours and guest appearances with Steve Vai, ZZ Top and Prince have kept Orianthi busy up to this point.
But guitar is far from Orianthi’s only means of expression. Before she received the call from the King of Pop, Orianthi had already been hard at work on her upcoming album, Believe, on which she sings, writes and leads her own band. Working with Geffen Records Chairman and A&R veteran Ron Fair and producer Howard Benson (All American Rejects, Daughtry, My Chemical Romance, Three Days Grace) her fierceness of character has made its way to songs that will simply knock the socks off of any boy in the rock star schoolyard.

Orianthi packs modern girl-power punch into every turn of phrase, but it’s the shredding that takes her brand of rock to an entirely new level. Songs like “Suffocated” and “Think Like A Man” are anthemic rock tracks recalling at time Evanescence, Avril Lavigne, Paramore and even a less-music row more-sunset strip Taylor Swift. First single “According To You” is a catchy tale of an ungrateful boyfriend with a killer guitar solo. The result: a thunderous, hook and riff driven debut that sounds larger than life. If, for a moment, you’ve thought the music world could use another taste of The Runaways’ Joan Jett, let us introduce you to Orianthi.

Google Focusing on Online Video Future

As you should remember, Goggle has purchased On2, the video codec company, not so long ago. This made many open source proponents hope that Google is going to release On2’s technology to the public as patent-free and open source. That was determined by the fact that On2 had earlier donated the code from another codec to Ogg Theora, which is a video open source project, and possibly could do that again.
Another thing is that On2 purchase was made exactly in time of the discussion of switching from Flash to HTML5 in the web. There are many proponents of free online standards which would be happy to see web video being delivered via the simple <video> element in HTML5. As Google owns YouTube, everything it does regarding video is going important to the public, and such a move could make video distribution online absolutely free, as opposed to Adobe’s Flash, for example. There is an alternative presented by H.264, which is now becoming an open source standard, but it won’t be free forever, because MPEG-LA promised to keep it royalty free only till 2015.

So when Google leaked its decision to launch VP8 free of charge and YouTube made more moves to HTML5, it looked quite like a revolution in digital video. However, the reason for it remains unclear – why would Google go to such costs and effort to change the present situation with online video? H.264 is now a good choice for many, and YouTube has seemed happy with Flash even in its earlier days. Probably, the real incentive for the search giant’s HTML5 and VP8 is simply about advertising. That’s not a surprise for those who understand where Google earns its revenue. By stealing the control over video delivery from H.264 and Flash, Google would be able to reinforce its own role in video ads on YouTube, and therefore hinder Microsoft to interfere with IE and Silverlight (or whatever Apple was planning when built video advertising upon Safari). When Mozilla decided to choose H.264 support, Microsoft and Apple have got an opportunity to push their browsers and probably advertising schemes on compelling video material. So when Google will do the same, switching YouTube to VP8/HTML5, the other browsers will give it a commanding position.
It turns out that decisions on browser plug-ins and codecs can have a great affect on the very shape of the web. Google, having already spent millions of dollars on this front, should clearly understand the importance of video strategy.
