Lord Dattatreya Mantras

Lord Dattatreya is the incarnation of the Holy Trinity consisting of Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He thereby has the combined qualities of the Trinity. He is considered as the Guru of all Gurus. This incarnation of the Creator, the Protector and the Destroyer is said to be very kind to his worshippers and bless them with all they need. Lord Dattatraya is normally portrayed with a cow representing Bhoomi Devi (Mother Earth) and four dogs at his feet representing the four Vedas. Dattatreya has three heads symbolizing the unity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He also represents the time (past, present and future) and the 3 main aspects of the Universe (creation, preservation and destruction).

Lord Dattatreya was born to Sage Atri and Anasuya because of the boon she received from the Trinity who tested her. They begged Anasuya who was well known for her chastity for alms and requested her to prepare and serve food for them after being naked. As it is considered wrong to turn guests away and Guests are considered as god she agreed to the request. But the power of her chastity was such that the Trinity had to turn infants to be fed by her. Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva was extremely pleased by her that they showed their original form and blessed Anusuya that she will give birth a son who will be the embodiment of the three Lords. The word Datta means ‘Given’. As he was given as a son to the sage couple Atri and Anasuya, he is also known as Atreya.

The taraka monosyllable mantra of Dattatreya is 'Daam' and the six syllable mantra is 'OM, ShriiM, HriiM, KliiM, GlauM, DraaM. Given below are some of the popular mantras of Lord Dattareya.

Kamadeva is the Hindu Deity of love. Kama Deva literally means 'divine love' or 'god of love'. He is normally depicted as a young and handsome winged man who wields a bow and arrows. Kamdev is known by several names like Ragavrinta, Ananga, Kandarpa, Manmatha, Manasija, Madana, Ratikanta, Pushpavan, Pushpadhanva or simply Kama. The story of the birth of Kamadeva is told differently in several Puranas. In some stories Kamadeva is said to be the son of Goddess Mahalakshmi and in others he is said to be the mind born son of Lord Brahma. He is also the husband of Rati the Goddess of Beauty and is also said to be an incarnation of Pradyumna, a son of Krishna by Rukmini. The vaishnavites believe that he is Krishna himself. The basis of the story is that after Kamadeva was burned to ashes by Shiva because of his anger the cupid god merged into the body of Vasudeva Krishna and in order to get his body again he was placed in the womb of Rukmini.

Lord Kartikeya or Muruga is one of the most worshipped Gods in South India, especially Tamilnadu. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Kartikeya is considered as an avatar of Lord Shiva. As per the Legend he was born of the six rays of light that emerged from the third eye of Lord Shiva. The six rays fell on the forest of reed grass and was carried to the Ganges by Vayu and Agni which turned to six beautiful babies on six lotus flowers. The six babies were united into one with six faces and twelve hands when Parvati held them in her arms. His avatar was to put an end to Soorapadman’s cruelty. According to Hindu mythology Jupiter is considered to be the teacher of gods or Devas. In Vedic astrology, the planet Jupiter is known as Guru, Brihaspati and Devagura. As a God Brihaspathi is a handsome youth with a big-bellied body and a broad chest. Brihaspati is a Brahman by birth and son of Sage Angirasa (and grandson of Brahma) and Surupa. He is the teacher of Gods and knows the Vedas and is an expert in all forms of knowledge. Brihaspathi is four armed and wears yellow cloths and is very fond of sweets. He sits on a lotus and his chariot is pulled by eight yellow horses.
Afflictions to Guru or Brihaspathi can mean bad luck, loss in litigation, skin problems, arthritis, heart troubles, impurity of the blood, liver malfunction, diabetes etc. One can chant the Mantras of Guru in case of afflictions or do other remedies.
