PATRICE LYLE

EXCERPT from "Ten Ways to Lose Your YA Reader" by Patrice Lyle in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction

The young adult (YA) fiction market is totally hot. What’s even hotter is actually writing the stories that captivate teen readers’ hearts. The ones that keep them up past their bedtimes to finish reading. The ones they text their friends about during class when they’re supposed to be learning something constructive. The ones they can’t wait to spend their allowance on.

Writing for the teen audience is in many ways similar to writing for adults. Great pacing, strong characterization, vivid world building and a clever plot. Sure these are all essential. But there are more ways to lose young readers than adults. Here are the main ten.
--

Patrice Lyle grew up in Astoria, Oregon, where she watched several movies being filmed in her neighborhood; such as The Goonies, Free Willy and Kindergarten Cop. Seeing these stories “come to life” at a young age instilled in her a great love of story telling. When she was nineteen, she embarked upon a European adventure to work as a nanny in Amsterdam with her sister; a trip that ended up being the greatest story of all. She returned home and eventually earned an MA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University and a graduate degree in Holistic Nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health. She now lives near Baltimore with her husband and three cats, where she divides her time between her two passions in life: helping people get healthy and writing paranormal novels. Her YA paranormal novel, LETHALLY BLONDE, will be available in 2012 from Leap Books.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Many thanks to everyone who has read Many Genres, One Craft over the past six months, and who has been posting reviews, sharing comments, and sending feedback. As editors, Heidi and I are thrilled that the collection has received awards but it is even more rewarding to us to know that the book is making a difference in writers' lives.

I wanted to let you all know about something special in my newest book, The Gorelets Omnibus, which is a "collected works" volume of all my twisted horror poems from gorelets.com and elsewhere over the past decade. I'm proud of the book, which includes not only hundreds of pages of short-short horror poetry (reminiscent of the flash fiction from my book, 100 Jolts), but also -- available only in the special hardcover edition -- a variety of miscellaneous pieces that should inspire anyone who is interested in writing dark fiction or adding a little strangeness to their work.

For instance, there are five articles written by scholars from America and the UK, analyzing what makes the poems tick and what makes today's "new media" horror special. There is also a collection of "how to" articles on the crafting of horror poetry that I've published over the years. And -- perhaps best of all for the creative writers reading this -- this book includes the entire collection of my "Instigation" prompts from over the past ten years (including the impossible to find Instigation columns from Hellnotes magazine from years ago).

In other words: though it isn't apparent on the cover, the hardcover edition of this book hides a short-course from me in writing horror. If you're a horror/mystery/dark fantasy author, I think this book will prompt your dark imagination in ways you might appreciate, even if you have no interest in poetry. (Though look out, future Poes and Lovecrafts -- this collection might change your mind!)

THREE DILEMMAS, TWO FRIENDS, ONE DESERTED TREE HOUSE...

The friendship of Boston bred Johanna Lawrence and Two Rock, South Carolina’s Lilly Covington spans, well, decades. From their days as college roommates through their years as lakeside neighbors, they’ve offered each other sympathy, support and solace for life’s rough edges. Summer’s come round again and with a new crop of concerns, they commandeer their sons’ long-deserted tree house for morning coffee, evening margaritas and soulful contemplation.

Happily married Johanna has a family reunion to organize, a husband needing attention, a daughter wanting advice, and a son sweeping Grand Central terminal as community service for graffiti violations. Fresh from her mother’s memorial service, she carries her small bag of ashes on morning walks around the lake, “waiting for wisdom” as she grapples with her emerging role as materfamilias. Who has she become? How did she get there so fast?

Single again Lilly, bemoaning her fresh status as an empty nester and the second divorce from her only husband, hopes to seek refuge in her aging bungalow next door~~until “Ex-ex” announces that he and his paramour, graphic designer Cat Gallordi, intend to use it on alternate weekends.

Complications deepen at the far end of picturesque Lake Allamuchy. Johanna’s first love, the bad boy she used years ago to defy her parents, suddenly appears. Quicker than he can dub their tree house The Chick Palace, he embroils Johanna and Lilly in a triangle, steals hearts and turns summer upside down. Just as he did one long-ago August.

With her trademark heart, humor and sass, RITA finalist and creator of the Branigan brother series, Leslie Davis Guccione plunks us into a lakeside romp fueled by friendship, family, and one old flame not averse to once again testing the waters.
--

New romance, empty nests, love, secrets, betrayal and forgiveness ... The Chick Palace has it all, along with healthy dollops of humor and wisdom, all drenched in the sunshine of memory. I loved this book. -- Adina Senft, author of THE WOUNDED HEART

DAVID MORRELL

EXCERPT from "To Thine Own Self Be True: Five Pieces of Advice for Potential Thriller Writers" by David Morrell in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction

Thrillers have never been more popular. On the New York Times hardback fiction bestseller list, over half are often filled with examples of the genre. Thrillers even have their own organization, International Thriller Writers. But they didn’t always have this presence. Back in 1972, when my debut novel, First Blood, introduced the character of Rambo, bestseller lists favored a mix of literary, sentimental, and historical fiction as well as the sort of celebrity gossip novels that we identify with Harold Robbins and Jacqueline Susann. Not that thrillers were entirely absent. Michael Crichton’s The Terminal Man appeared on the New York Times list that year, but it was considered an exception. Only in this decade did thrillers become so unusually dominant. If you’re a writer who’s thinking of going in this direction, here are five pieces of advice that might be helpful.

David Morrell is the award-winning author of First Blood, the novel in which Rambo was created. He holds a Ph. D. in American literature from Penn State and was a professor at the University of Iowa. Noted for his research, Morrell has written numerous international bestsellers that include the classic spy trilogy The Brotherhood of the Rose (the basis for an NBC miniseries after the Super Bowl), The Fraternity of the Stone, and The League of Night and Fog. International Thriller Writers honored him with its ThrillerMaster award. His writing book, The Successful Novelist, discusses what he has learned in his almost four decades as an author. EXCERPT from "Dark and Story Nights: Mood and Atmosphere in Horror" by Mary SanGiovanni in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction

It is often argued that horror is not a genre so much as a pervasive emotion which characterizes a piece of fiction. These writers advise one to write the story that best conveys the message the writer wishes to get across. Should themes in that story be conveyed through human reactions to situations of extreme stress or anxiety, should its subtle symbolism invoke primal fight or flight instincts, and should its narrative build tension, then the genre of the story is often labeled "horror." A successful horror story need not rely on the tropes of the genre to work as a horror story. It simply must make the proper use of mood and atmosphere to convey its message.
EXCERPT from "Talking the Talk in Crime (and Other) Fiction" by David Shifren in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction

For dialogue to sound real it’s no secret that cops had better sound like cops, lawyers like lawyers and doctors like doctors, but never is this more important than when members of a profession talk with each other. When writing such scenes you walk a fine line between including enough technical jargon to sound authentic but not so much you lose lay readers.

What’s a writer to do?

Unfortunately the tried-and-true method for testing dialogue – reading it aloud and trusting your ear to flag what doesn’t fly – won’t always work when your characters are speaking the lingo and acronyms of their professional language.
David Shifren has been teaching for SHU’s graduate writing program for six years and teaching for the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned an MFA in Fiction Writing, since 1989. EXCERPT from "Ruining Everything: Tips for Plotting a Mystery" by Victoria Thompson in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction

Plotting your first mystery can seem like an overwhelming prospect. Keeping suspects and clues and red herrings straight is like juggling squirrels. Here is a strategy to help you get all your suspects and clues to line up neatly and perform for you. It won’t give you a great idea, but it will help you turn that great idea into a viable mystery.

First thing you need to do is create your “Mystery Eternal Triangle,” which is different from the romantic one. This triangle consists of the victim, the killer and the sleuth. You can start with any of them, but for this exercise, let’s start with the victim.
Sometimes no matter how vigilant you are, you can't keep loved ones save.

Dana McCluskey and her father know very well that there can be dangers around every corner. They wanted to keep Emmy safe.

But it is impossible to see some dangers coming. And there are those corners that you'd never see, out-of-the-way places just beyond our grasp where loved ones can get very lost — and the danger there is very real indeed.

EXCERPT from "Sex, Death, and Chocolate in the Middle Ages: Adding Realism to Your Fantasy" by Russ Howe in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction

The Middle Ages have captured the imagination of modern writers and readers more than any other historical period. Just walk through the fiction section of any bookstore and you’ll see evidence of medieval influence—either thrust boldly into your face or working its magic in a more subtle fashion. The fantasy genre owes approximately 90% of its genetic heritage to the tropes, myths, and technology of the European Middle Ages. A turn down the romance aisle will offer you covers filled with fine maidens being wooed by brave knights (or knaves?) because physical attraction and sex haven’t changed much in five hundred years. In the field of mystery, an entire subgenre of medieval whodunits thrives. Even in modern thrillers, a crowded corner of the genre is filled with mysterious Templars and other shadowy enigmas of the period.

The challenge for genre fiction writers is two-fold. First, to understand why this period resonates so well with the modern reader (or perhaps, more importantly, the acquiring editor). Second, to master the period and its constituent elements to allow the reader to taste, smell, and feel the essence of this compelling period in European history.

EXCERPT from "To Dream a Dragon" by Rachael Pruitt in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction

Write what you love. Write what you know. Good advice, right? But for a novice writer who spent her childhood swinging on vines pretending to be Robin Hood, these two tidbits of wisdom set up a frustrating contradiction.

What I loved was historical fantasy, the action-packed kingdom of myth. What I knew was growing up female in a small town in Pennsylvania. Quite a distance to travel as a budding author! So when my first Master’s thesis advisor, Barbara Miller, asked what my novel would be about, I was horrified to hear myself speak honestly and tell her my secret heart's desire: "Gwynhyfar. I want to write a version of the Arthurian legend."

I will be eternally grateful to Barbara for not snorting, "You've got to be kidding!"
Rachael Pruitt is a writer, storyteller, and teacher with a lifelong fascination for Celtic mythology and the Arthurian legend. Her Arthurian poetry has been published in Paradox magazine (2008 and 2009) and she has just completed her first Arthurian novel, The Dragon's Harp, a retelling of Gwynhyfar's coming-of-age. Currently an English as a Second Language teacher, Rachael has also published nonfiction articles detailing "Myths for Our Time", a personal mythology process she developed while an Artist in Residence in the Pacific Northwest.

Many Genres at Western Maryland Small Press Festival 2011

This Saturday, October 15, 2011, contributors to Many Genres, One Craft (Michael A. EXCERPT from "The Brass Tacks of Steampunk" by Christopher Paul Carey in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction
The resurgence of steampunk has left writers scrambling to don brass goggles and set off into the heavens in steam-powered dirigibles. But before tripping blindly over the first clockwork cliché that comes to mind, novices to the genre would do well to survey its founding works and influences:

The Difference Engine by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling
The invention of a mechanical computer takes Victorian London by storm.

The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers
Professor Brendan Doyle travels from 1983 to 1810, where he runs afoul of a secret society whose failed attempt to oust the British from Egypt has unlocked the time-gates.
EXCERPT from "Cyberpunk Remastered: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Postmodernism" by K. Ceres Wright in Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction

Change Is Good, No?

Many stories of the Golden Age of Science Fiction (GA) promised utopia—gleaming futures with flying cars, pristine cities, and Three-Lawed robots. Characters flew off to work with personal jet packs, enjoyed disease-free lives, and took nourishment from meals-in-a-pill. GA writings were mainly consigned to pulp magazines, kept safely away from "serious literature," and made to languish in the science fiction ghetto. Then rebellion hit, in a movement called the New Wave. New Wave science fiction writers mocked the GA tropes and experimented with taboo subjects such as sex, politics, the distrust of man’s superior intellect and the decline of society. They also brought science fiction into the literary mainstream with an attention to style not witnessed in the pulps, and a focus on inner man, not outer space. This New Wave rode the trend of postmodernism, which challenged and rejected the mores and principles of established culture. However, as the New Wave genre was subsumed into the mainstream, the rebellion lost steam. But as rebellions are wont to do, this one did not disappear, it merely changed form. Enter cyberpunk.

From the flames of tragedy, a hero rises! In the roaring heart of the crucible, steel is made. In the raging flame of personal tragedy, men are sometimes forged into something more than human. Life was bliss for millionaire adventurer Richard Henry Benson until the fateful day crime and greed took away his wife and daughter and turned him into something more than human. Driven by loss, compelled by grief, The Avenger is a chilled impersonal force of justice, more machine than man, dedicated to the destruction of evildoers everywhere. This collection features new prose stories of The Avenger by such luminaries as Will Murray, Christopher Paul Carey, Robin W.
