Somawathiya was built in 2 nd centaury BC and this stupa is said to enshrine the right tooth relic of Lord Buddha.

According to chronicles, prince Giri-aba and princess Somawathi (sister of King Kavanthissa) lived on a small community called "Somapura" on the beds of Mahaveli River. Price Giriaba constructed Somawathi Chethiya on the request of his wife who wanted to engage in religious activities. Upon completion of the Stupa, the prince requested a monk named Mahinda for some "dathu" to be kept in the relic chamber of the stupa. Maha Thera Mahinda gave him the right tooth relic of Lord Buddha.

According to history this tooth relic was received by a "Na" (serpent) king Jayasena when the remaining relics from the Buddha"s cremation site were distributed. He took this to the "Naga Lokaya" (the kingdom of serpents) and deposited it in a stupa made out of gold for worship. When the prince Giriaba"s request was made, the maha thero Mahinda visited the "Naga" Kingdom and brought this tooth relic to be deposited in the stupa built by the prince.

Upon completion of the stupa and five viharas the prince and princess handed over the temple to Mahinda maha thero and sixty other monks. Thereafter many kings have contributed to this centre in many ways.

According to the historical documents the Somawathiya was built on the eastern bank of the Mahaveli River. But today it is about ½ km from the west bank of the river. Though this caused confusion whether this is the real Somawathi Stupa described in the chronicles, it was later realised the river has changed course during the last 800 years and in fact the current sandy road leading to the Somawathi was the path of the river some 800 years ago.

The site was rediscovered in 1940's and in '48 renovations were started by group of enthusiasts. In 1964 archaeologists started excavating the site. While excavating the main stupa, a smaller stupa at a depth of 5 feet 5 inches in to the main stupa was found. It is believed this smaller stupa was the original Somawathi Chethiya build by prince Giriaba in the 2 nd century BC and the latter stupa build around the original was the work of King Kanittha Tissa in 164 AC.

Archaeologists also found four moonstones and flower pedestals after excavating the earth for 5 ½ feet around the stupa. They also unearthed six 3 ½ feet long "siripa gal" (rocks carved with the bottom of the feet of Buddha). In addition to these many buildings has been unearthed including a wall surrounding the stupa.

Nine stone inscriptions have been found around this site and the most popular is the four inscriptions found on the Eric Swan rock. This rock can be seen few metres away from the gravel road, about 100 metres before the main entrance to the temple. This rock got its name because a photographer called Eric Swan who was killed by a wild elephant near this rock.

Today Somawathi is popular for three main reasons.

Somawathi holds one of the only two tooth relics of Lord Buddha existing in the world. The other tooth relic is kept at the "Dalada Maligawa" in Kandy.
Incredible unnatural phenomena which has been accruing around the stupa .These have been witnessed by thousands of pilgrims
The remoteness of the location. This site is located deep inside the jungle infested with elephants and other wild animals.

LTTE Terrorist Attack on Somawathi in 1987

In 1987 a group of LTTE terrorists attacked this holy grounds hacking to death a Buddhist monk and seven civilians who were residing in a close by temple. Learning this news from a Muslim civilian the pilgrims and the monks in Somawathi went in to hiding in the jungle and after several days walked to a temple in a residential area.

Few days after, on 15 th of December 1987, these terrorists came to the Somawathi and found it deserted. They stole the "Chuda Manikya" (the large gem stone placed at the very top of the stupa) and the dug a hole of about 1 ½ feet deep in to the stupa in search of valuable relics. Then they marched in to a Sinhalese village nearby where a man called S. Dissanayake lived. He was the caretaker of the holy site since 1966. The (LTTE) terrorists hacked to death 10 civilians in this village including S. Dissanayake and his four children. On the same day the leader of this terror group died at the stupa by mistakenly firing his own weapon. For some strange reason they also didn"t take the "Chuda Manikya" they stole which was later found by the archaeological department.

After these brutal murders, this site was left unattended due to fear of further terrorist attacks and was in this state for the next 15 years. After the ceasefire agreement between the LTTE and the government, the gravel roads were reconstructed and open to the pilgrims in 2002.

Unexplained phenomena on this holy ground

When it was discovered that the right tooth relic of Buddha was deposited in the relic chamber of this stupa, Diyawadane Nilame of the Kandy Dalada Maligawa (Appointed Guardian of the other existing tooth relic) Giragama Nilame, went in search of this stupa with four people from Kandy and four villagers from Pollonaruwa. They were guided by a Muslim man called Mutti. The purpose of this journey was to dig in to the stupa"s relic chamber and bring the right tooth relic to Kandy to be kept with left tooth relic already kept under his guardianship at the Dalada Maligaya. It is said that the Muslim guide lost his sight on the day they reached the stupa and the Diyawadane Nilame stated digging the stupa. After a little while a small cobra has come out of the hole. They killed it and started digging again. After digging a little further in, a large black cobra has appeared with a large number of wasps. Fearing an attack they ran and the Diyawadane Nilame later died of a wound caused when he fell over while running.

In recent times thousands of pilgrims have seen beams of lights originating from the stupa going towards the sky and colour of whole sky changing to a yellowish colour making all the white cloths worn by the pilgrims appearing yellow. One significant difference of these unusual occurrences in this site is that most of these happen on special ceremonial days where there are thousands of pilgrims at the site to witness these events. It is also said that the sounds of drum beats originating from the belly of the stupa can be heard on some days.

In 1977 (30 th June) similar beams of light were witnessed on the ceremonial day where special relics were to be deposited on the relic chamber of the stupa. This happened at 7.20 am and was witnessed by thousands including officers of Sri Lanka Radio Corporation who were there to report on the event.

Similarly on the July 4 th in 1981 the President of Sri Lanka Mr, J.R. Jayawardhana came to Somawathi to ceremonially open the "Kotha" of the stupa. As soon as they arrived at the site, at about 2 pm the whole sky became yellow and the sun looked like the moon. Multiple colours started appearing around the stupa. All the white cloths worn by the people appeared yellow. The president was supposed to uncover the "kotha" standing on the ground using a rope running to the top of the stupa. After witnessing this phenomena he decided to climb to the top using a temporary stairway built for workers and uncover the kotha.

On the 28 th April 2002, a similar occurrence happened in front of thousands of pilgrims. This time it was continued for over 45 minutes, the longest time this phenomena continued. This was also witnessed by the sister and the brother of J.R. Jayawardhana who were there to pay homage to the chethiya. Again the same thinApril 7, 2007n poya day and continued for about 3 minutes.

These unexplained occurrences has made the Somawathi Chethiya even more mystic and holy to the Buddhists who flock to the site specially on Poya days.

Access to the site

Until recently access to this site was restricted due to LTTE terrorist activity. It was the Sri Lankan Forces who protected this site when civilian were evacuated after brutal murder of the monk by the LTTE. But with the new ceasefire agreements pilgrims have started to flock to this temple in numbers. The gravel roads are now motorable during the dry season. During rainy season only tractors and large four wheel vehicles can travel on these roads.

Sungawila is the last town and border village you come across on the route to Somawathi. After this town you come to the Somawathi strict natural reserve and wildlife sanctuary. From here 12 kilometres you need to travel on a lonely dusty unpaved road which will take you through the jungle and villus to the great isolated dagoba. The last stretch is basically a elephant country. If you travel on this stretch during early morning or late in the evening, you are sure to come across few wild elephants. Wild elephants are a common site in the temple grounds during the nights. They have got used to visiting the garbage cans left by the cadjan stalls on the temple grounds. Therefore the owners of these stalls make sure to put at least a bunch of bananas in to the garbage cans. As long s there is some food in the cans they would leave the occupants of the stalls unharmed.

This site can be reached from Pollonnaruwa or from Minneriya. Coming from Minneriya, you have to pass the Higurakgoda town to reach Sungawila. From pollonnaruwa, you need to turn at the Hospital Junction (between pollonnaruwa and Kaduruwela towns). The distance to the stupa from both these towns (Minneriya and Polonnaruwa) is about 40 kilometres.

Bopathella waterfall
The Bopath Falls cascades in the shape of a bo (Ficus religiosa) tree (hence its name) and is the most comprehensively studied fall in Sri Lanka. Its source is the Kurugana River that later joins the Kaluganga River at Kurugaomaodara.The average temperature of the area is 26.9 - 27.8 degrees Celsius and the annual rainfall of the fall’s catchment area is 5080mm. The mean speed of the flow is 6 cubic metres per second. The upper reach of the fall is made up of granite and biotite virin, and is covered by sand. The water from the fall irrigates the paddy fields of the Udakada and Kuruwita areas.

BAMBARA KANDA FALL
TheThis fall, due to its sheer drop of 241m, is the highest in the whole of Sri Lanka. Set amid an evergreen forest, it is formed by the Uduweriya Haputale mountains’ Kuda Oya (river), a tributary of the Walawe River. It cascades in a torrent (especially in the wet season) from a rocky outcrop into a deep, basin-like pool. To the left of the fall, centuries of wind and rain have formed what is said to resemble two embracing lovers out of the rock.

Bambarakanda Falls is situated in the Badulla District, Handumulla PC. From the Colombo - Badulla highway, turn left for Weerakoon village and continue for 5km to the fall. The terrain is relatively difficult, so a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. Belihul Oya rest-house is 18km away, and Koslanda rest-house is 27km. World’s End, another of Sri Lanka’s major natural tourist attractions, is just 18km away.

DUNHINDA FALL
This is considered to be one of the most enchanting falls in Sri Lanka and is in close proximity to Badulla town. The water resembles a thin cloud as it cascades 63m downwards into a large pool. The backdrop to the fall is known as ‘Dunhinda Adaviya’. ‘Dunhinda’ translates to ’spraying/vapour waterfall’ - the word ‘dun’ means ‘gave/was given’, while ‘hinda’ means ‘evaporate’.

Bakers waterfall is Not a one and only waterfall of Horton plains. It is a most beautiful waterfall of Horton plains. Don't bath at this waterfall. You can travel any season of the year to this. You can camping at inside of Horton plains. First you should get permission from wild life department of Colombo.
Some young go to bath in this place and they lost there valuable life. Mr. Samuwel Bakers who is British hunter had come to this place at 1845 AD. There fore this waterfall identifies Bakers waterfalls. There is a deep hole at the middle of this waterfall. There fore don't try to bath in this waterfall because many young's are dead at this place.

Dhuwili Waterfalls

Dhuwili Ella of Balangoda Sri Lanka is a very high and a beautiful waterfall in Sri Lanka. Dhuwili Ella is at Kalthota which is Hambegambuwa road of Balangoda. There are about 27 kilometeres from Balangoda town and you have to walk 3kms from Kalthota. Dhuwili Ella is situated at below of Samanala Wawa Wally. Samanala Wawa means Wally which is like a butterfly. Main entrance of Samanala Wewa is at Belihuloya and Pambahinna. Samanala Wawa is situated at 8km Distance from Sabaragamuwa University. University of Sabaragamuwa Sri Lanka is also at Kumbalgama road which is direct to Samanala Wawa. Dhuwili Ella waterfall is very beautiful and large amount of water falls down from it every second. There fore not suitable to bath at this waterfall. Belihuloya has the No.01 in World pure waterways. There are many sub waterfalls at this region. Diyaluma Fall
this is the third highest fall in Sri Lanka. The torrent of water cascades down to the Koslande Plateau and during rain it is a spectacular sight. Sadly, this enchanting fall visible from the Koslande highway may disappear due to frequent landslides. On one side of the fall the land is covered in deciduous plants. Wildlife found in the area include lizards. The fall is located along the Koslande - Welawaya road in the Badulla District. Koslanda is the nearest town to the fall, 6km away, and Welawaya is 13km away.

Devon Waterfall
Devon waterfall of Sri Lanka is one of very beautiful waterfall of Sri Lanka and which is situated at Thalawakale of Sri Lanka. This falls is high above 1159m from sea level. This falls at between Thalawakele and Hatton and situated at about 7km from Thalawakele town. This waterfall is height about 98m. Easily view this waterfall from main road (A7) of Thalawakele to Hatton. .
Devon waterfall is at Pathana area of Thalawakele and very closed to St. Clair waterfall. Mlesna tea center is at closed to Devon waterfalls and there are no more rest places at Thalawakele place.
There are two main view points at A7 road of Thalawakele. Lower view point is special because both St.clair and Devon falls can be viewed from same place. In Railway viewing point is at Watagoda place which is at 10km from Thalawakele to Nanuoya side.
Devon is very beautiful waterfall and don't dirt this place

LAKSHAPANA FALL
This very popular 129m fall is thought to derive its name from the presence of iron ore (laksha) in the rocks over which the water flows.
The fall was said to house a labyrinth of tunnels, one of which still exists. Superstitious villagers tell how during Halloween, a golden melon bobs up and down in the water.

The Laksapana Reservoir, where the fall is found, is used by power stations at New Laksapana, Canyon and Polpitye Samanala resulting in a certain amount of water depletion. A number of villages including Laksapana, Pathana, Kiriwaneliya, Muruthatenna, Kottalena, Hunugala and Belumgala surround the fall.
The fall is 660m above sea level in the Nuwara Eliya Ambagamuwa Korale at the Ginigathhena Divisional Secretariat. The most convenient route is the Hatton - Maskeliya road. Take this road for 18km from Hatton, where a footpath leads down past the Pathana village to the fall. Alternatively, take the Laksapana road from the Kaluganga River junction for 14km to the Laksapana Temple. The fall is just 2.5km from here. The closest town is Ginigathhena, and the hotels of Dick Oya are 50km away

St. Clair Waterfall
St. Clair waterfalls is at Thalawakele Sri Lanka. It is very beautiful and wide waterfall of Sri Lanka. Some tell that St. Clair as little Niagara. St. Clair has several stairs. St. Clair is at St. Clai estate of Thalawakele. There fore waterfall also identified as St. Clai. Devon waterfalls also at closed to this waterfall. St. Clai is at 4km from Thalawakele town to Hatton road. There are main view points at main road although you can go down to the tea estate for beautiful views. This falls can be viewed clearly on the railway also. Some tourists visit this waterfall on the way to Nuwaraeliya.

Ravana waterfall

Ravana waterfalls is one of very beautiful of Sri Lanka and which is situated at Badulla district and you can visit it Near Ella place. This waterfall is situated near the Bandarawela-Wallawawaya road. When you travel along this way you can see nice waterfall called Ravana falls.
Ravana means ancient story of India and Sri Lanka. We can identify that this fall also has long history. Without special reason the name isn't kept. There fore we can't think that Ravana falls hasn't long history.
Middle of the Ravana fall there is a tunnel. People cant though it but in King Walagamba's time they might through it. Some people tried to through it although they couldn't get permission. Near Ravana falls there is a Temple called Dova Temple. This temple also has same tunnel. Some says that those tunnels are not two those are only one. Some says that there are tunnel system to protect king and others. Various places of Badulla district has these type of tunnels. Dova Temple was made by King Walagamba in 13th Century.
Dowa king Walagmba ancient Temple and there were very secret tunnel system at between those places. In now some tunnels are there. Through the tunnels is some what dangerous.

Ramboda waterfall

Ramboda waterfalls is situated at Ramboda of Nuwaraeliya district of Sri Lanka. Ramboda is at between Nuwaraeliya and Gampola towns. There are about 35km to Ramboda from Gampola town. Ramboda waterfall is at downside of the main road and it cannot see from the main road. You should you down to the main road at Ramboda bridge of Nuwaraeliya Kandy main road and then you can visit the Ramboda waterfall. Ramboda waterfall is not a single waterfall and it has two staires. Up side of the main road of Ramboda place, There is a another waterfall. Most of tourist dismiss the waterfall and they visit up side waterfall and go away. But dont forget to visit Ramboda main waterfall at downside of the Ramboda of Nuwaraeliya Sri Lanka.

IBM Makes Plastic From Plants

iBM researchers announced they have discovered a way to make Earth-friendly plastic using organic catalysts from plants.

The new plant-based plastic could quickly replace petroleum-based products that are tough on the environment because they are so slow to degrade.

The plastic research breakthrough promises biodegradable plastics made in a way that saves on energy, according to Chandrasekhar “Spike” Narayan, a manager of science and technology at IBM’s Almaden Research Center in Northern California.

Almaden and Stanford University researchers said the discovery could herald an era of sustainability for a plastics industry rife with seemingly eternal products notorious for cramming landfills and littering the planet.

“This discovery and new approach using organic catalysts could lead to well-defined, biodegradable molecules made from renewable resources in an environmentally responsible way,” IBM said in a press release.

The “green chemistry” breakthrough using “organic catalysts” results in plastics that could be repeatedly recycled, instead of only once as is the case with petroleum-based plastic made using metal oxide catalysts.

Plant plastics could also be made “biocompatible” to improve the targeting of drugs in bodies, such as cancer medicines aimed at killing cancer cells but sparing healthy ones, according to IBM.

“We’re exploring new methods of applying technology and our expertise in materials science to creating a sustainable, environmentally sound future,” said Almaden lab research director Josephine Cheng.

IBM is working on a way to put the discovery to work in the recycling of plastics used in food and beverage containers.

“We are really starting to scratch the surface of what we can do with it,” Narayan said of the process that has been demonstrated in the lab.

Plant plastics for things such as car parts could be made at lower costs than petroleum-based plastics, while biodegradable plastic materials of soda bottle quality are “competitive” on price, according to Narayan.

U.S. Government links farmers to new markets

Farmers in Kebithigollewa, northern Anuradhapura District, are earning more money from their fruits and vegetables, thanks to an USAID project that linked farmers with new markets.

The U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) has developed new markets for farmers in Kebithigollewa, Anuradhapura District to sell their produce, raising incomes for farmers and creating new long-term partnerships with Sri Lankan food companies.

USAID, the development agency of the U.S. Government, rehabilitated the Ulpatha Fruit and Vegetable Collection Center, creating a central collection location for Kebithigollewa area farmers. USAID also linked local farmers with John Keells Supermarkets and Plenty Foods, providing technical training to prepare 200 farmers to sell directly to the companies. These new relationships have given farmers a stable market for their products at higher prices and have increased their incomes.

Sunethra Priyaradshani, a benefiting farmer said, "There was an abundance of fruits and vegetables in our village, but we did not get a reasonable price for our produce from the middlemen. Thanks to USAID, now we get a better price for our yield."

Rebecca Cohn, USAID Mission Director, noted the long-term benefit of this partnership. "USAID developed this new relationship between private sector companies and area farmers, and this partnership will continue after our project is completed. The improved Collection Center is reducing processing and transportation costs and increasing farmers’ incomes. Food companies have access to a consistent supply of quality produce, consumers have more choices, and farmers receive a stable, fair price for their fruits and vegetables. Everybody wins from this partnership."

The Center is the first of its kind in the area, benefiting not only the participating farmers, but also the 3000 members of the Kebithigollewa Integrated Rural Development Organization (KIRDO) through increased revenues and training. "I see a major change in the thinking pattern of the farmers in the villages since USAID intervened to provide training and to encourage them to improve their income. I am grateful to USAID for helping the farmers of Kebithigollewa, in making their lives better," said U.P. Rajakaruna Basnayake, the head of KIRDO.

The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development, have provided development and humanitarian assistance in developing countries worldwide for nearly 50 years. Since 1956, USAID/Sri Lanka has invested nearly $2 billion to benefit all the people of Sri Lanka.

UN renews war crimes charges against Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has strongly opposed a move by the UN to reveal the findings of an analysis of the authenticity of the "Channel 4 videotape" containing footage from northern Sri Lanka during a special briefing at the UN on January 7.

Foreign Secretary Romesh Jayasinghe has, in a communiqué to Professor Philip Alston, Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary, or Arbitrary Executions, requested him not to make a public statement without giving the Sri Lankan government adequate time to study what Alston called a technical note containing opinions expressed by three foreign experts retained by the UN.

The controversial footage, allegedly taken by a soldier last January, was aired on August 25, 2009. Interestingly, Alston quoted Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka (JDS), widely believed to be based in Germany as his source which asserted that the video had been made last January.

Based on the opinion obtained from experts in forensic pathology, Forensic video analysis, and firearm evidence, Alston informed the Sri Lankan government on Wednesday (January 6) of his decision to issue a public statement the following day.

Emphasising that experts hired by him had invalidated most of the arguments of Sri Lankan experts, including two, who worked for the armed forces, Alston called for an independent inquiry into war crimes charges as well as other serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told The Island that the government had received the technical note at 6.00 p.m. on Wednesday and it would be unreasonable to go public the following day before the Sri Lankan government could study the issue. Such a course of action would be unfair and considered another example of biased pre-judgement, the Minister said.

Early life

Basu was born in New Delhi, India, to a Bengali family. She is the second of three daughters to her parents, the elder being Bidisha, and the younger—Vijayeta. Although she was born in New Delhi, her family later moved to Kolkata.

According to her, she had come into modeling and acting quite by accident, because initially she had planned to study medicine.^[1] Basu studied science till the 12th standard at Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir and later took up commerce at The Bhawanipur Gujarati Education Society College, an undergraduate college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. In Kolkata, she did modelling and rampshows partime. Although, as pointed above, she intended to become a doctor, her aversion for dissections made her opt for chartered accountancy.^[2] However, in 1996, she met well-known model Mehr Jessia in Kolkata; the latter suggested that Basu take part in the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest. She eventually participated, and won the contest.^[1]

Career

After winning the Ford Godrej Cinthol contest, Basu was flown to New York by the Ford Company, where she had a successful modelling career at the age of 17.^[1]

Basu made her film debut in Abbas Mustan's Ajnabee, with Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol and Kareena Kapoor. She played a married woman who goes all out to woo her husband’s married friend, and eventually won the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for her performance.

In 2002, Basu starred in Telugu movie Takkari Donga opposite Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu and Vikram Bhatt's thriller Raaz. Raaz was a big commercial success and surfaced as the biggest hit of that year.^[3] For her performance in the film, she received her first Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare. One review in The Tribune noted, "...it is Bipasha Basu who steals the show with her fine performance."^[4] She appeared as Sonia Khanna in the 2003 hit movie Jism alongside John Abraham. The movie earned her a Filmfare Best Villain Award nomination.

Besides acting, Bips, as she is fondly called, did the famous video "Tu" for Sonu Nigam's album, Kismat back in her early days before she became an actress. She also made a guest appearance in Jay Sean's music video Stolen.^[5]

In 2006, she won popular acclaim for her performance in an Item number during the song Beedi in the film Omkara. The song was a national hit, and Basu's picturisation was appreciated.^[6]

In 2008 Basu starred in Race, her second collaboration with duo Abbas Mustan, with whom she debuted in Bollywood. Co-starring Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, the film performed well at the box office, and Basu's performance was appreciated by critics. Taran Adarsh of indiaFM described her performance as "her best work so far. She’s superb".^[7] She also received good reviews for her role in Bachna Ae Haseeno opposite Ranbir Kapoor. She completed the year by appearing in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in the song Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte.

In 2009, Bipasha was rumored to sign onto her first Hollywood venture Chaimera alongside Billy Zane.^[8]

Basu is currently dating actor John Abraham.^[9]^[10] The couple have been together since late 2002 and have been referred to as a supercouple in the Indian media.^[11] She previously dated fellow Bollywood actor Dino Morea.^[12]

In 2006, Basu claimed to have been harassed by certain organizers of the India Day Parade in Edison, New Jersey. Basu was initially scheduled to lead the parade on 13 August 2006. Basu eventually appeared on stage late, according to her, because of the harassment. She said, "I wanted to attend the parade, but I could not." She explained that she was harassed physically and mentally in the car by two people who were taking her to the parade.^[13]

In 2005 and 2007, UK magazine Eastern Eye named Basu the "Sexiest Woman in Asia".^[14]

From the beginning steps of patient preparation identification and collection of samples etc. to the end result of releasing patient results, Lanka Hospitals works according to this international standard and uses it as the basis for all their activities, thereby ensuring patients receive results that are accurate and those which guarantee the highest quality. The ISO standard provides a level of quality that can be measured globally and is maintained by the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board (SLAB) locally. The ISO :15189 standard differs from other standards by not limiting its judging to just management standards, but by also dealing with the technical aspect - providing advice to those who not only use the Laboratory services, but also collect samples from patients and interpret the test results. In addition to these, the standard also gives guidelines on acceptable turn around times, how to provide testing in a medical emergency and also the laboratory’s role in education and training of health care staff.
In their aim to ensure this high level of quality and reliability, Lanka Hospitals Laboratory maintains internal standards of receiving advice on a regular basis from experts in relevant fields and through participating in external quality assurance programmes in clinical laboratory testing such as RIQAS, National STD/ AIDS control programmes, National Blood Transfusion services, Bacteriology EQAS programmes of MRI, Inter Laboratory comparisons and PT with the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board (SLAB). To meet with SLAB standards and receive the ISO: 15189 accreditation, members of the Lanka Hospitals Laboratory team underwent external workshops and training courses carried out by SLAB on quality management and internal courses to update their knowledge in various fields - thus reiterating their team as a group of well experienced, qualified and competent individuals capable of handling all aspects of laboratory practices. Prabha’s weapon found

A weapon believed to have belonged to LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, along with 2,000 kilos of RDX explosives – commonly known as cyclonite – and a large stock of other military items were found last evening by the Special Crimes Unit (SCU) of the Kilinochchi Police in the Vellamulliwaikkal area in Mullaitivu.
Senior DIG for Vavuniya, Nimal Lewke speaking to The Bottom Line confirmed that the weapon found, an M-16A2 with a 40 millimetre (mm) grenade launcher was that used by the LTTE Leader as his personal weapon.
The gun had been found together with a body amour.
“The type of weapon that was found last evening, which was used by Prabhakaran, has also been used by the Special Task Force (STF) since 1984 and it is also used by the Navy,” said Lewke.
He added that it is believed that the weapon was stolen by Prabhakaran during the war.
According to initial reports, the military items were buried at least 15 feet underground and were transported to the Vavuniya Senior DIG’s Office upon discovery.
The weapon haul included 2,500 7.62 mm bullets, 250 grams of gun powder, 88 suicide kits, 50 claymores stands and detonators, 46 artillery fuses, 25 Johnny mines and anti-aircraft guns, along with many others.

With just three weeks remaining for the 2010 Presidential Election, six unions of depositors of troubled finance companies are unifying under an umbrella body, in a bid to support a presidential candidate; reportedly Sarath Fonseka.
The Bottom Line learns that depositors of five troubled Ceylinco entities – Golden Key Credit Card Company Ltd, Ceylinco Finance and Guarantee (F&G), Ceylinco Investment and Realty (CIR), Ceylinco Profit Sharing Ltd, Ceylinco Shriram, along with depositors union of Sakvithi are to declare as to which candidate they will support at a press conference scheduled for tomorrow.
President of Golden Key Depositors’ Association Anusha Emmert told The Bottom Line that six unions have unified under one umbrella as in their view all resorts to remedy the grievances of depositors who are placed in similar predicaments, have failed.
“The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), along with other bureaucrats, has failed us so far. Nearly one year has passed without anyone being able to resolve this crisis. So, we have decided to unite and support a Presidential candidate whom we think is capable of resolving our issues. Talks with the Attorney General following orders of the Supreme Court, have not yielded any fruits. We will declare whom we are supporting at tomorrow’s press conference,” Emmert said.
However, a close confidante of GK Depositors’ Association revealed to The Bottom Line that GKDA, which had been right throughout influenced by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), would support Sarath Fonseka.
“Emmert’s father was an ardent supporter of the JVP, and so we (as depositors) were told that Fonseka has given an assurance that the depositors would be repaid under his regime, in the event he is elected. However, we backed out, as the only objective of the association should be to ensure repayment without aligning with any political party,” he said.
She refuted the claim that another group of depositors had met President Mahinda Rajapaksa three weeks ago. Recently, the Golden Key depositors split into two with both groups charging the other for embezzlement of association’s funds.
“She has no authority to represent the depositors. What we are asking the government is to award an equal percentage to all depositors rather than separating them into categories according to their size of investments. We have evidence that there are enough assets to pay depositors, if you pool all assets of Ceylinco subsidiaries,” Emmert said.
She added that when India underwent a similar financial crisis, it took over all such troubled finance companies and brought them under one management. That’s how they were able to keep a contagious effect taking place,” she added.
Vice President of the Ceylinco Depositors’ Committee and former Treasurer of GKDA, Dushanthi Hapugoda said that supporting one presidential candidate would lead to the politicisation of the movement and thereby jeopardise it.
“We don’t need to get involved in politics. We only met President Rajapaksa as he is the incumbent President. We can expect a solution only from the President whoever it may be. Just because they (depositors) believe us, we should not force them telling whom to vote for,” she added.
However, she said that although the government could solve this within 24 hours the bureaucratic red tape hampered the process.
“Although the President is firm, bureaucrats especially the Central Bank, are complacent. For instance nearly one year had passed but they are still auditing accounts of Golden Key,” Hapugoda said.
However, both agreed that aggrieved depositors along with their depositors numbered over seven hundred thousand, which was a significant vote base for any candidate.

පිළිතුර - මම දකින්නේ 2009 වර්ෂය ලංකා ඉතිහාසයේ අමාරුම අවුරුද්දක්‌ හැටියට. අපි හිතුවෙ 2008 අමාරුයි කියල. 2008 අවසන් වෙනකොට අපි හිතුවෙ අමාරු කාලයක්‌ පසු කළා, 2009 දී අපිට ඊට වඩා හොඳ යහපත් වාතාවරණයක්‌ ඇති වෙයි කියල. නමුත් එහෙම වුණේ නෑ. ඊට වඩා හාත්පසින්ම වෙනස්‌ ඊට වඩා දරුණු අමාරු වාතාවරණයක්‌ තමයි 2009 වසරෙදි උදා වුණේ. අපට මුහුණ දෙන්න සිදුවූ අභියෝග ඉතාමත් දැවැන්ත අභියෝග. නමුත් අපි ඒ අභියෝගවලට මුහුණ දීලා, ඒව ජය ගත්ත කියල කියන්න පුළුවන්. ඒ ගැන අපට සන්තෝසයක්‌ ඇති වෙනව.

ඒ සමගම අපි පාඩම් කීපයකුත් ඉගෙන ගත්තා. ලෝක ආර්ථික අර්බුදය දෙස බලන විට මෙවැනි තත්ත්වයක්‌ අපි කොහොමද කළමනාකරණය කර ගන්නෙ කියල. සමස්‌තයක්‌ ලෙස මට පෙනෙන්නේ විශාල අභියෝග වලට මුහුණ දී ජයගත් වසරක්‌ මෙන්ම යුද ජයග්‍රහණය තුළින් රටේ දීර්ඝ කාලයක්‌ තිසේසේ රටේ ආර්ථික ප්‍රගතියට තිබූ බාධාව මගහරවා ගත් වසරක්‌ ලෙස 2009 වසර ගැන අපට බලන්න පුළුවන්.

ප්‍රශ්නය - නමුත් 2009 වසරේදී රාජ්‍ය මූල්‍ය තත්ත්වයන් අයහපත් අතට හැරුණා නේද? ඉලක්‌ක කළ රාජ්‍ය ආදායම් උපයා ගන්න අසමත් වුණා. ඒ වගේම රාජ්‍ය වියදම් ඉහළ ගියා. රජයේ නිල ආර්ථික උපදේශකයා වන්නේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා මහ බැංකුවයි. අයහපත් අතට හැරුණු මේ රාජ්‍ය මුල්‍ය තත්ත්වය ගැන ඔබ කියන්නේ කුමක්‌ද?

පිළිතුර - අපට ඒ ඒ අවස්‌ථාවලදී කරන්නට සිදු වන දේවල් කරන්න වෙනව. අපට ඒව නවත්තල ඉන්න බැරි තත්ත්වයක්‌ තිබුණා. විශේෂයෙන්ම අපි 2009 වසරේදී යුද්ධය අවසන් කරන්න අවශ්‍ය සෑම සම්පතක්‌ම ලබා දුන්නා. ඒක කළේ ලේසියෙන් නෙවෙයි. අපි සැලකුවේ එය අනාගතයට කරන ආයෝජනයක්‌ ලෙසයි. අනාගතයේදී අපට තියෙන ගැටලු රැසක්‌ යුද්ධය අවසන් වුණොත් අපට නැති කරන්න හැකි වෙනවා කියන අරමුණින් තමයි අපි අමාරුවෙන් වුණත් මේ හැම සම්පතක්‌ම යුද්ධයට ලබා දුන්නේ.

තව උදාහරණයක්‌ මම කියන්නම්, අපි ගිය වසරේ සියලුම මහවැලි වේළි නැවත අලුත්වැඩියා කරන්න පටන් ගත්තා මේක කාටවත් පේන්නෙ නැහැ. අවුරුදු 25 කට පසුවයි මේ දේ කරන්නේ. ඒකට ඩොලර් මිලියන 70 ක්‌ වියදම් වෙනවා. කවුරුත් ඒ ගැන කතා කරන්නෙ නැහැ. නමුත් අපි එය නොකළොත් තව වසර කිහිපයකින් අපට විශාල ප්‍රශ්නවලට මුහුණ දෙන්න සිදුවෙන්න පුළුවන්. මේ වගේ අවුරුදු ගණනාවක්‌ තිස්‌සේ නොකරපු දේවලට අපි යොමුවෙලා තියෙනවා.

මේ වගේ යුද්ධයක්‌ කරමින්, රටේ දැවැන්ත සංවර්ධනයකුත් සිදුකරමින් ලෝක ආර්ථික අවපාතයන්ටත් මුහුණ දෙන්න අපට සිදු වුණා. ඒ නිසා අපේ ආනයන අපනයන අඩු වුණා. ඒ මත ලැබුණු බදු ආදායම් අහිමි වුණා. අපි ඒ නිසා විදෙස්‌ මුදල් සොයා ගත්තා. එහිදී නොයෙකුත් විවේචනත් අපට එල්ල කළා. නමුත් දැන් හිතන්න අප ගෙදර කරදරයක්‌ වුණොත් අප නිකන් ඉන්නවාද? ගෙදර වහලෙ කැඩුනෝතින්, අපි ණයවෙලා හරි ඒක කොහොමහරි හදා ගන්නව. සල්ලි නැහැ කියල නිකන් ඉන්නෙ නෑනෙ. ඒක අත්‍යවශ්‍ය දෙයක්‌ නිසයි අපි එය කරන්නේ. දැං අද අපේ කොටස්‌ වෙළෙඳ පොළේ ලොකු වර්ධනයක්‌ තියෙනවා. නමුත් ඒක කොහොමද වුණේ? යුද්ධය අවසන් කිරීම ඇතුළු අත්‍යවශ්‍ය දේවල් කළ නිසයි.

ඔය භාණ්‌ඩාගාරය හිස්‌ කියන කතාව හැමදාම කියන දෙයක්‌. ඇත්තටම ඒකනෙ විය යුත්තේ. එන මුදල අපි ඵලදායි ලෙස භාවිත කරන්න ඕන. භාණ්‌ඩාගාරය කියන්නේ සල්ලි එකතු කරගෙන, ගොඩගහගෙන කාමරයක දාගෙන ඉන්න තැනක්‌ නෙවෙයි. ලෝකෙම ඕනම රටක සල්ලි එන විදිහට ඒවා නිසි පරිදි අවශ්‍යතාවය පරිදි වියදම් කළ යුතුයි. නමුත් ඒ සමගම අපි දළ දේශීය නිෂ්පාදිතයේ ප්‍රතිශතයක්‌ ලෙස අපේ රාජ්‍ය ණය ප්‍රතිශතය අඩු කරගෙන තියෙනවා, සියයට අසූ ගණනකට. ඒ නිසා බදු වලින් ආපු මුදල් අපි ණයවලින් අරගෙන තියෙනවා. එහෙම අරන් රටට අත්‍යවශ්‍ය දේ කළා. එහි ප්‍රතිඵල අනාගතයෙදි ලැබෙයි.

ප්‍රශ්නය - යුද්ධය දිනුවට, මේ ආණ්‌ඩුවට ආර්ථිකය හදන්න බෑ කියල චෝදනාවකුත් එල්ල වෙනවා. ජනාධිපති අපේක්‍ෂක ජෙනරාල් සරත් ෆොන්සේකා මහතාත් ප්‍රකාශ කළා ආර්ථිකය හැදීම අතින් එජාපය හොඳ ප්‍රවීණතාවක්‌ පෙන්වලා තියෙනවා කියල. ඒ නිසා මේ ආණ්‌ඩුවට ආර්ථිකය හදන්න බැහැ කියල එල්ල වන විවේචනය ගැන ඔබ මොකද කියන්නේ?

පිළිතුර - ආර්ථිකය කියන්නේ කුමක්‌ද කියල. ෆොන්සේකා මහත්තය හිතන හැටි මම නම් දන්නේ නැහැ. නමුත් අපි දන්නව ආර්ථික ප්‍රගතිය බලන්නේ යම් දර්ශක වලින් ප්‍රධානතම දර්ශකය තමයි. ආර්ථික වර්ධනය. ඉතිහාසයේ කවදාවත් නැහැ පිට පිට සියයට 6 ඉක්‌මවා ගිය ආර්ථික වර්ධනයක්‌ ලබාගත් වසර හතරක්‌ නමුත් 2005 - 2008 කාලයේ අපි ඒ ප්‍රගතිය ලබා ගත්තා. එවැනි ප්‍රගතියක්‌ ලබාගත්ත එකම වකවානුව මෙයයි. ඒ නිසා මේ කියන කතා මොනවද කියල අපිට හිතා ගන්න පුළුවන්.

යුද්දෙත් කරන්නෙ නැතිව එක රස්‌සාවක්‌වත් දෙන්නෙ නැතුව මහා පරිමාණ සංවර්ධන ව්‍යාපෘති පටන් ගත්තෙ නැතිව එජාප කාලෙ ආර්ථික වර්ධන වේගය තිබුණෙ සියයට 4 යි. එහෙනම් මොකක්‌ද මේ ආර්ථික කළමනාකරණය කියල ඒ අය කියන්නේ. මේ සියල්ල කරල තියෙන්නේ යුද්ධය කරන ගමන්.

යුද්ධෙ කරන ගමන් ආර්ථික වර්ධන වේගය වැඩි කර ගත්තා විරැකියාව අඩු කර ගත්තා, උද්ධමනය අඩුකර ගත්තා, සංචිත වැඩි කර ගත්තා, රාජ්‍ය ණය අඩුකර ගත්තා, පොළී අනුපාත අඩු කළා, මේ ඔක්‌කොම කළා. නමුත් මහජනතාව කියයි මේ කිසිවක්‌ නොකළත්, යුද්දෙ අවසන් කළ එකම ඇති කියල.

මහා පරිමාණ සංවර්ධන ව්‍යාපෘති කීයක්‌ කෙරීගෙන යනවද? පාරක්‌ අලුතින් හැදිල නැති ගමක්‌ තියෙනව නම් මට කියන්න? වෙන ව්‍යාපෘති ක්‍රියාත්මක වෙලා නැති ගමක්‌ තියේ නම් කියන්න. උතුරු නැගෙනහිර කොතරම් සංවර්ධනයක්‌ සිදුවේගෙන යනවාද? එහෙනම් ආර්ථික කළමනාකරණයක්‌ නැහැ කියන්නෙ කොහොමද?

ප්‍රශ්නය - බඩු මිල වැඩියි කියලත් චෝදනා කරනවා?

පිළිතුර - අපි බඩු මිලත් එක්‌ක සාපේක්‍ෂව අපි බලන්න ඕන පඩි කොහොමද කියල, ආදායම් මාර්ග කොහොමද කියල. අද ජනතාවගේ ආදායම් මට්‌ටම් ජීවන තත්ත්වය වර්ධනය වෙලා තියනවා. අපි උද්ධමනය හොඳට පාලනය කරගෙන තියෙනවා. නමුත් ලෝකෙ කොහේ බැලුවත් මිනිස්‌සු කෙතරම් ආදායම් මට්‌ටමක්‌ ලැබුවත් තෘප්තිමත් වෙන්නෙ නැහැ. ඒක සාමාන්‍ය දෙයක්‌. ඒකත් ආර්ථික ඉදිරි ගමනට අවශ්‍යයි. කවදාවත් ආර්ථිකයක්‌ ගැන දන්නෙ නැති, ආර්ථික කටයුතු හසුරුවලා නැති මිනිස්‌සු මේව කියනව. ඒ ගැන අපිට කණගාටුයි. අද රටේ පුදුමාකාර වෙනසක්‌ වෙලා තියනවා. ඒක මම කියන නිසා නෙවෙයි, රටේ ඕන කෙනෙකුට පේනවා. මම නම් හිතන්නේ මේ ආර්ථික ප්‍රගතිය අපි ජනතාවට පැහැදිලි කරනව මදි කියලයි. දේශපාලන අරමුණු අනුව කරන ඔය විවේචනවලින් අපි සැලෙන්නේ නැහැ.

ප්‍රශ්නය - ජෙනරාල් සරත් ෆොන්සේකා මහතාගේ ජනපතිවරණ සටන මෙහෙයවන පුද්ගලයකු බවට පත්ව සිටින මංගල සමරවීර මන්ත්‍රීවරයා කියනවා මහින්ද චින්තනයේ එක පොරොන්දුවක්‌වත් ඉටුකරලා නැහැ කියල. ඔබ සැලසුම් ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීමේ අමාත්‍යාංශයේ හිටපු ලේකම් "මහින්ද චින්තන" වැඩපිළිවෙළට සෘජුවම දායකත්වය සැපයූ කෙනෙක්‌. මේ චෝදනාවට ඔබ පිළිතුර දෙන්නේ කෙසේද?

පිළිතුර - මේ අය සම්පූර්ණයෙන් බොරුවනෙ කියන්නෙ. ජනතාව දන්නවනෙ මොනවද කිව්වෙ, මොනවද කළේ කියල. පාරවල් හදල නැහැ කියනව. ඒ හදපු පාරෙම යන ගමන්. මේ සංවර්ධනය හංගල කරන්න පුළුවන් දෙයක්‌ නොවෙයිනෙ.

දේශපාලනයේදී ඔහොම කියනව. ඒ පැත්තෙන් මේ පැත්තට ආවම, මේ පැත්තෙන් ඒ පැත්තට ගියාම වැරැදි කියනව. මේව කරුණු රහිතව, නිකන් වචනවලින් ඉදිරිපත් කරන විවේචන පමණයි. අද සෑම ආර්ථික දර්ශකයකින්ම මේ ප්‍රගතිය පෙන්නුම් කරනවා. ඒ නිසා මහින්ද චින්තනයේ එක පොරොන්දුවක්‌වත් ඉටුවෙලා නැහැ කියන එක දේශපාලනිකව කියන කතාවක්‌.

ප්‍රශ්නය - ගෝල්ඩන් කී සක්‌විති ඇතුළු ආයතනවල තැන්පත්කරුවන්ගේ ප්‍රශ්නය විසඳීමට නම් එම ආයතනවල වත්කම් දේපළ රජයට පවරාගෙන අදාළ තැන්පත්කරුවන්ට රජය විසින් බැඳුම්කර ලබාදිය යුතු බව ජනාධිපති අපේක්‍ෂක ජෙනරාල් සරත් ෆොන්සේකා මහතා ප්‍රකාශ කළා. අපි දන්නවා රජය වෙනුවෙන් මේ බැඳුම්කර නිකුත් කිරීම සිදු කරන්නේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා මහ බැංකුව විසිනුයි. මේ වැඩේ කරන්න පුළුවන් වැඩක්‌ද?

පිළිතුර - මේ දේවල් අපි වගකීමෙන් කටයුතු කරන්න ඕන. මේ ගැන නොදන්න, වගකීමක්‌ නැති අයට ඕන දෙයක්‌ කියන්න පුළුවන්. ඒක හරි පහසුයි. දැන් අපිට පේනව හැමදෙයක්‌ම දෙන්න පුළුවන් කතා තමයි අපට ඇහෙන්නේ. හඳෙන් හරි හාල් ගෙනත් දෙන්නම් කියනව වගේ. මෙහෙම කියන කතාවලට ආර්ථිකමය හා මූල්‍යමය වශයෙන් පදනමක්‌ නැහැ. මේ ගැන හොඳ අධ්‍යනයකින් තමයි විසඳුම් දෙන්න අවශ්‍ය වෙන්නේ. එහෙම නැතුව කියන කතා එක්‌කෝ කිසිම තේරුමක්‌ නැති කතාවක්‌. එක්‌කෝ මෝඩ කතාවක්‌. එහෙමත් නැත්නම් සම්පූර්ණ බොරු කතාවක්‌. හඳෙන් හරි හාල් ගෙනත් දෙන්න පුළුවන් කියන කතා මේ තැන්පත්කරුවන්ට කියන්න හොඳ නැහැ. කුමක්‌ හෝ පොදු ව්‍යqහයක්‌ තුළ මේක නිරාකරණය කරගන්න ඕන. හැමෝටම සාධාරණය ඉටුවන පරිදි, දැන් ඒ වැඩපිළිවෙළ උසාවියෙන් අනුමැතිය ඇතිව කරගෙන යනව. එහෙම නැතිව මේක මහජනතාවට දරන්න කියන්න බෑනේ. දැං මම කාගෙ හරි වංචාවකට අහුවෙලා ඔබට කියනවා නම් ඒක ගෙවන්න කියල එහෙම කරන්න බෑ. එතකොට සාධාරණව අවසරලත් තැන්පත්කරුවන්ට තියෙන සාධාරණය කුමක්‌ද? ශේ්‍රෂ්ඨාධිකරණයෙන්ම අනුමැතිය ඇතිවයි විසඳුමක්‌ ක්‍රියාත්මක වෙන්නේ. දැන් ඒ ගමන යනව. මැජික්‌ බලෙන් හෝ අණදීම් තුළින් මේ ප්‍රශ්න විසඳන්න බෑ. පුදුම කතා තමයි මේ අය කියන්නේ. දුකයි මේ කියන කතා ගැන. සම්පූර්ණ මුලාවක්‌නේ මේ කරන්නේ.

ප්‍රශ්නය - අලුතින් නිකුත් කරපු රුපියල් 1000 නෝට්‌ටුව සම්බන්ධයෙන් ඉදිරිපත් වෙන විවේචන ගැනත් යම් පැහැදිලි කිරීමක්‌ කරන්න. හිටපු අගවිනිසුරුතුමා පවා මේ නෝට්‌ටුව විවේචනය කළා.

පිළිතුර - 1951 දී අපේ රටේ නෝට්‌ටු නිකුත් කිරීමේදී මහා බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයේ ඩසස වන ජෝර්ඡ් රජතුමාගේ පින්තූරය යොදා ගත්තා. 1954 දී අපේ රටේ නෝට්‌ටුවට ෂෂ වැනි එලිසබෙත් මහරැජිනගේ ඡායාරූපය යොදා ගත්තා. මේ නිදහස්‌ ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ නෝට්‌ටුවලට, ඒ වගේ කාසි හා නෝට්‌ටුවලට අපේ නායකයන් වන එස්‌. ඩබ්ලිව්. ආර්. ඩී. බණ්‌ඩාරනායක, ඡේ. ආර්. ජයවර්ධන, ආර්. ප්‍රේමදාස යන අයගේ ඡායාරූප යොදා ගත්තා. දැන් මේ යුද ජයග්‍රහණය සමරන්න අපේ රටේ නායකයකුගේ ඡායාරූපයක්‌ යොදාගත් විට එල්ල වන විවේචනවලින් පේන්නේ මේ අය මොන තරම් වෛරයකින් කටයුතු කරනවාද කියන එකයි.

මම මේ කියන කතා කෙලින්ම හෙළා දකිනව. මෙහෙම ඉහළ තනතුරු දරපු කෙනකුත් මෙහෙම කියනවා නම්, ඒක ඒ අයගේ චරිතයටයි. ඒ අය දරපු තනතුරටත් ගැලපෙන්නේ නැති කතාවක්‌ කියල මම කියන්න කැමැතියි.

ප්‍රශ්නය- මේ වසරේ (2010) අගෝස්‌තු 28 වැනිදාට ශ්‍රී ලංකා මහ බැංකුවට වසර 60ක්‌ සම්පූර්ණ වෙනවා. මේ සමරුවට මොනවද කරන්නේ? ඒ දින වනවිට ඔබ පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ සිටීවිද?

S. B. Dissanayake all out to upset proposed MOU, makes a scathing attack on Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa

Colombo, 09 October, (Asiantribune.com): The United National Partyâ€™s National Organizer S. B. Dissanayaka vehemently attacked President Mahinda Rajapaksa and said the leader was suffering from a war mentality for the military campaigns he wages against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE).S.B.Dissanayaka ridiculed the President and said the head of state was masquerading as Dutugemunu and Parakramabahu.

He ridiculed the President and said the head of state was masquerading as Dutugemunu and Parakramabahu , two kings during the periods of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa kingdoms, who brought the country under one rule defeating foreign invasions and divisions.

Dissanayaka was pardoned, only months ago, by President Mahinda Rajapaksa while he was languishing in a prison spending a jail term of two years RI for contempt of court.

The former Ministers verbal onslaughts came at a time when his own party has officially agreed with the Rajapaksa government to sign a memorandum of understanding on six points to develop the country that include a solution to the conflict in the North and the East.

The former parliamentarian, who has lost his Nuwara Eliya District seat due to the imprisonment, to his own partyâ€™s Renuka Herath, obviously made the scathing remarks over the BBCâ€™s Sinhala language service Sandeshaya, to upset the apple cart of some party leaders who have agreed to cooperate with the government like Karu Jayasuriya and Dr. G. L. Peiris, his former colleague.S. B. Dissanayake lost his Nuwara Eliya District parliament seat due to the imprisonment, to his own partyâ€™s Renuka Herath,

He attacked the government for trying to devolve power through a unitary system of government and called it the biggest fraud in the world.

While the memorandum of understanding between his party UNP and the ruling SLFP is said to formulate a political consensus and a governance supported by both parties for a limited period of time Dissanayaka said during his interview it should be made use of to challenge the government.

He indirectly expressed his unhappiness for the appointment of Party Secretary Tissa Attanayaka with whom he is quarrelling over the appointment of some one else to the seat vacated by his jail term.
He said there should be a change in the constitution of the party that allows the leader to name party officials. Already, Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has nominated Rukman Senanayaka, the grandson of the founder leader of the party, who has been a critic of both Ranil and his wily uncle J. R. Jayewardene, as the party chairman probably to give a new Senanayaka image to stop the waning popularity of the party among the rural masses.

In the same breath Wickremesinghe also has nominated his protÃ©gÃ© Tissa Attanayaka as the party secretary. It was Wickremesinghe himself who was instrumental in making S. B. Dissanayaka the national Organizer. " The battle began ," The battle began , Susanthika Jayasinghe said, â€œafter the man who is the sports minister (of Sri Lanka) wanted to have sex with me . I say , No I am married ."

Many think, the people of Sri Lanka deserve an explanation from Wickremesinghe and others of the United National Party since just few months before the cross over of S. B. Dissanayaka, the party leader and his spokesman Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku were promising the people of the country to prosecute S. B. Dissanayaka , the then Minister of Sports, for his criminal activities over the Susanthika Jayasinghe incident. But as soon as he crossed over to the UNP, the alleged criminal record was conveniently swept under the carpet.

The true nature of Sri Lankaâ€™s freedom of the press was also exhibited then. Sunday Leader, Sunday Times, Ravaya newspapers and TNL TV hid their interviews done with Susanthika Jayasinghe shelved safely in their attics, since in Sri Lanka press freedom is nothing else but to attack only the enemies of oneâ€™s political masters. They also proudly lead free media movements!

To know the seriousness of the crime of S.B. Dissanayaka one should refer to the Special Olympic edition of the Los Angeles Times in which the bronze medalist at the Sydney games gave a shocking interview to the world.

The Los Angeles Times reported in a story filed from Sydney that
Olympic bronze medal winner in the women's 200 meter race, Susanthika Jayasinghe has accused Sri Lankan sports officials of framing her up in a drug charge by tampering with a urine sample to spite her after she refused sex to the country's powerful Sports Minister, S.B.Dissanayaka.

Written by Mike Penner , a Times staff writer , in the widely read Sydney Olympics special section the shocking news item said Susanthika "won the bronze medal in the 200 meters and bitterly waved the accomplishment in the face of the Sri Lanka Track and Field Federation ,accusing the federation officials of sexual harassment and duplicity surrounding her controversial suspension for a urine sample she believes was tampered with."

The widely circulated newspaper with sales over one million copies said "Jayasinghe became the first Sri Lankan to win an Olympic track and field medal since 1948, representing a national federation she has feuded with since a 1998 out of competition urine sample tested positive for steroids."

The newspaper wrote, "Jayasinghe has maintained her innocence all along, fighting a long legal battle that resulted in the charges being dismissed."

" The battle began , Jayasinghe said, after the man who is the sports minister (of Sri Lanka) wanted to have sex with me . I say , No I am married ."

"Jayasinghe believes," the Times said, " that incident led to Sri Lanka federation officials framing her after taking an out of competition sample in April 1998 and refusing to seal the bottle while she was present." Hanguranketha House of S.B. Dissanayaka-

The Times added: "The test came back positive," said Jayasinghe , who contends the sample was tampered with."This makes no sense . I am a clean girl. I never failed any drug test before."

Only when S. B. Dissanayake crossed over to the United National Party former President Chandrika Kumaratunga thought that he was dishonest. She sent helicopters with photographers to take pictures of his palatial house in Hanguranketha .

The historical place is famed to have had a palace in ancient times but no kandyan king would have had a palace as big as his. But he said this house has got only four rooms and cost only 8 million Rupees. By looking at the picture Chandrika Kumaratungaâ€™s photographer took the readers could judge for themselves the credibility of the National Organizer of the United National Party.

The time he spent under both political parties and the great tasks he performed under Chandrika Kumaratunga and Ranil Wickremesinghe are enough testimony for the sorry plight of the leadership of Sri Lanka and the blatant political opportunism of the highest order practiced by S. B. Dissanayaka.
