Have you ever wondered what our world looks like from a bird’s perspective? During a visit last year to Mt. Trashmore in Virginia Beach, I wondered just that. From the top of the former landfill, I surveyed the buildings of town center, daydreaming about how small I must look to a bird flying above. Fortunately, with a little technology and ingenuity, our dreams of capturing “a view from above” are now reality!

As you may have heard, drones have become extremely popular and accessible to the average person. Perhaps you’ve been at a wedding or a reunion where drones were used to capture a group picture or video clip. The fact is that drones are starting to pop up everywhere, and their technological potential has yet to be fully unleashed!

Here at MAP Environmental, we often find ourselves working on very large properties – some of which would take us weeks to fully explore and analyze! With the help of one of our scientists (who also happens to have his FAA Drone Pilot license), we’re able to gather helpful reconnaissance before we even go out to a specific site! In the clip below, our scientist was able to gather intel on a large property in Chesapeake, which helped us formulate a more efficient plan for our site visit and subsequent wetlands delineation:

Local environmental firm seeking a Senior Environmental Scientist to manage its growing list of Hampton Roads projects, from concept to completion, involving various environmental services.

The applicant MUST have proven experience in wetlands delineations and securing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) jurisdictional determinations (JDs). The applicant must have successful experience in preparing, submitting and negotiating COE, Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), and Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) permits. Only applicants that meet these qualifications and have proven experience with regulatory agencies will be considered.

Skills and Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from an accredited university in the field of Environmental Science, Ecology, Geology, Physical Science or a closely related field.

• Wetlands Delineation Certification Preferred

• 3-5 years of office and field experience in the use of the 1987 COE Wetlands Delineation Manual and 2010 Regional Supplement in wetlands delineations, permitting, and mitigation.

• Experience and proficiency in the preparation of Phase I Environmental Site Assessments per ASTM 1527-13 and environmental documents pursuant to NEPA.

• Computer proficiency with in-depth knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Arc Info and GIS applications.

"A Span of Irony"

Each of us can claim countless, wonderful childhood memories. For me, one of my favorite boyhood memories was our family transferring from Baltimore, Maryland to Virginia Beach in the late 1960s. I vividly recall arriving at Virginia Beach and being completely awestruck with the vibrant oceanfront and majestic Atlantic. And being mesmerized by the City’s unique landmarks - the boardwalk, resort beach, steel pier, wooden pier and Rudee Inlet.

And then there was the amazing, scenic trek down Shore Drive and its Chesapeake Bayfront amenities including Fort Story, Cape Henry lighthouse, Seashore State Park (now First Landing State Park) and the distinctive rustic homes and businesses flanking Shore Drive.

But what really struck me was our first trek over the iconic Lesner Bridge and Lynnhaven Inlet – which connects the Chesapeake Bay and Lynnhaven River. I was absolutely captivated by the panoramic views from this bridge - the Lynnhaven River, Chesapeake Bay and even a glimpse of the Atlantic. Wow, as a mere ten-year old, the possibilities – boating, fishing, trapping, hunting, hiking, and swimming – were as endless as time. I felt like a kid in the candy store!

How ironic and humbling then, was it that some nearly 40 years later, our company was teamed with local engineering firm, Clark-Nexsen, and City of Virginia Beach on the environmental effort for the City’s replacement of the aging, structurally deficient Lesner Bridge. As an environmental consultant, what a rare and unique opportunity to reconnect and revisit a project encountered as a youngster.

We were fortunate to have successfully shepherded the environmental process – from the environmental study in 2008, Environmental Assessment in 2010, to the procurement of Federal, State and local permits in 2013 – which led to project construction startup in July 2014. What’s more, our company has been engaged in the construction, from actively photographing and video monitoring the bridge construction, including the new westbound span scheduled to open this fall.

Looking back on the past half century, I am amazed at the irony and good fortune of having been engaged on the City’s first signature bridge. And built, no less, directly above the Lynnhaven Inlet – and with the same awesome views and childhood memories from a place visited nearly 50 years ago!

Lesner Bridge Update

One of the chief regulatory requirements for the Lesner Bridge Replacement Project is the submission of quarterly construction monitoring reports. As the City of Virginia Beach's environmental advisor, MAP is responsible for observing, photographing, and documenting pre-, during, and post- construction conditions pursuant to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) permit.

Since 2014, MAP has been monitoring and capturing on-site footage of the bridge replacement project. What an exciting way to track the progress of such an iconic bridge and gateway into northern Virginia Beach!

Tech Innovations !

As environmental consultants, we are often hired to perform wetlands delineations for the purposes of determining the presence of wetlands (see definition here) on a specific parcel of land.

Geographically speaking, it's hard to find a piece of land in Hampton Roads that isn't populated with some form of wetlands!

One of the tools we use here at MAP is drone footage for gathering field reconnaissance. Utilizing aerial photography/videography allows us to develop a comprehensive plan for our wetlands delineation, which involves soil samples, observation points and flagging the entire property. The final product is a report that is then submitted for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers verification and permitting for development.

Office fun!

What makes working at MAP Environmental Inc. so great? A strong focus on team-building and trust.

Without the collaboration and effort of all MAP personnel, we simply could not achieve the success that we do on so many projects in Hampton Roads.

One of the ways we create a positive culture in our office is by taking the time for retreat. This past Friday was spent retreating from the office, as a way to re-focus and strategize for the months ahead, but also as an opportunity for team-building. (And a chance to check out a local eatery!)

Dear Friends,

I am often reminded of wisdom shared over 100 years ago by our 26^th president, Theodore Roosevelt, who said, “Far and away, the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing”.

Those words, spoken over 100 years ago, were as apropos then as they are today. As we embark on 2016, we are grateful for many of last year’s projects and success stories. Among those projects that MAP Environmental Inc. has supported – Lesner Bridge in Virginia Beach, Midtown Tunnel in Norfolk and Portsmouth, and Dominion’s Chesapeake Energy Center – each continues to proceed in re-shaping the region’s infrastructure.

As we embrace 2016, and the years ahead, we are poised to offer environmental expertise and regulatory consultation on the critical growth and development of Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth of Virginia. MAP to the Rescue!

Earlier this week, MAP's Office Manager, Autumn Meyers, discovered an injured bird in the road on the way to the office. It seems that the little Northern Flicker Woodpecker was hit by a vehicle and was struggling to find cover on the side of the road.

Thankfully for him, Autumn (with the help of a few local children) protected him from the busy traffic until they could contact the local wildlife rescue, and they were able to take him to a safer location. A big thank you to the Virginia Beach SPCA’s Wildlife Program and its volunteers for taking in and caring for our wounded Northern Flicker!

November 9, 2015 - Route 35 Bridge

Route 35 Bridge

In late Summer 2014, MAP was retained by URS (an AECOM company to help secure federal and state permits for the Route 35 bridge replacement project. MAP ultimately secured all permits by December 2014.

The structurally deficient and weight-restricted bridge, which was originally constructed in 1928, crosses the Nottaway River and enters the town of Courtland, Virginia. Nine months after its closing in January 2015, bridge construction was complete, and local and state officials celebrated its re-opening at an October 15^th ribbon-cutting ceremony.

MAP is proud to have assisted the AECOM and Waterfront Marine team on this important regional project!

Traveling to the OBX

Occasionally, our job requires us to travel outside of Virginia in order to perform environmental field work or investigations

This week, our scientists traveled down to Nags Head, North Carolina, to perform investigations for a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA). An ESA is a report prepared for a real estate holding that identifies potential or existing environmental contamination liabilities. These reports are quite important as they inform the owner or potential buyer of what they are purchasing.

Of course the trip wouldn't be complete without a glance of the OBX and the Atlantic Ocean!

2015 SWAM Business Forum

Last week Andrew Pocta, MAP's Business Development representative, attended the 2015 SWAM Business Forum in Virginia Beach. This year's forum focused on connecting small businesses with larger energy companies in the region.

Earlier this week, we captured a few of our scientists while they performed an wetlands delineation in the Western Branch section of Chesapeake. Typically, our wetlands services require multiple site visits in order to determine the presence (or lack thereof) of wetlands on our clients property. Utilizing the information gathered during a visit, our scientists create a wetlands map that is used to secure regulatory agency approval and subsequent permitting.

Annual Governor's Transportation Conference

MAP Environmental Inc. has been fortunate to attend the Virginia Governor's Transportation Conference various times throughout the past 15 years. This year, we're excited to see that the conference will be held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center from October 28th to 30th!

The conference is a great opportunity to discuss the latest developments and successes in Virginia regarding, as well as a chance to get a glimpse of what the future holds. Last year's conference in Roanoke was a huge success, and the venue was impressive!

New developments in the Hampton Roads region now require some form of regulatory permitting, so our job requires us to perform comprehensive field investigations on behalf of our clients. Other than a few mosquitos and the occasional tick, our staff is excited for the opportunity to get out and bask in the beauty of mother nature!

Lesner Bridge - Artificial Reef Enhancement

This past week, our project team met with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) to discuss an exciting element of the Lesner Bridge Replacement Project -the use of disposed bridge material as artificial reef enhancement.

As part of the voluntary mitigation for the project, the contractors will inspect all demolished bridge material for safety and suitability for use at one of the VMRC approved artificial reefs in the Chesapeake Bay: Cabbage Patch, Bluefish Rock and Ocean View.

With assistance and coordination from the VMRC, the artificial reef enhancements are slated to begin as early as Fall 2015! Stay tuned for footage from this exciting project!
