Updated March 23, 2009

Marathon Equipment Company, headquartered in Vernon, AL, is closing its Clearfield, PA manufacturing plant effective May 15, 2009. "Due to poor economic conditions, production of the Clearfield plant is being consolidated with the Vernon plant. We greatly appreciate the dedication and contribution of the Clearfield employees since the plant's opening in 1989," said Mike Beuke, VP of Operations.

Marathon officials are working closely with the PA Dislocated Workers Unit to help the 71 employees impacted by this closing to find other jobs in the community. Workers will continue employment with benefits for 60 days from the announced plant closing March 17th, 2009. Marathon officials are also working with employees to take advantage of educational opportunities offered by local agencies or schools. In addition, Marathon is offering employees outplacement counseling to include onsite computer access and resume and interview training.

Marathon Corporate Headquarters Gives Old Electronics the Final Punch!

Old computers, printers, copiers, monitors, phones, and various other equipment were loaded into TKO's truck to be taken to their facility, cleaned and then broken down to reclaim the recyclables.

Most materials, including the plastic, will be reused to make new electronic componentry and similar products. In 2008, TKO recycled 142 tons of metal and plastic, 6.9 tons of wire, over 1,200 batteries, and more than 220 tons of circuitry from electronic waste.

The EPA estimates that Americans generate over 2.6 million tons of e-waste annually and currently only about 1 in every 8 devices gets collected for recycling. Companies like TKO are positioning themselves to not only increase the ratio of recycled electronics, but also help divert the toxins found in these products from the waste stream and consequently, our environment.

As part of its Green Initiatives program, Marathon is leading its communities in encouraging electronic waste recycling.

Marathon Recognized by U.S. DOE in Save Energy Now Program

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Energy has recognized Marathon Equipment Company for demonstrating exceptional leadership through the Save Energy Now® Program - the department's initiative to reduce industrial energy intensity significantly over the next 10 years. The program consists of an initial energy-usage assessment and then provides the company with energy-saving opportunities to improve productivity, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and overall environmental performance.

Resourcefulness has been a Marathon value from the start. When Lawson Acton first created the company with Jack Wright in 1967, their vision centered around a more effective use of materials to make compactors more economical without compromising performance. Today, our manufacturing division continues to focus on improving efficiency in both workflow and company facilities. Conscious energy-usage fits into Marathon's "Operations Excellence" cultural program, which also includes Lean manufacturing and behaviorial-based STOPTM safety certification initiatives.

"Our manufacturing objective is to create a work culture that is efficient on every level, including energy use," says Richard Saliba, Vernon Plant Manager. "Incorporating daily shut-down procedures, weekly air-line checks, high-efficiency flourescent lights, extra large ceiling fans, and various other equipment changes have helped to significantly reduce our consumption."

"STOP is a behavioral-based program focused on empowering all employees' involvement in safety, through observation, communication, and auditing," said Richard Saliba, Plant Manager for Vernon. "These three processes identify the safe actions as well as the unsafe actions of employees, and subsequently encourage communication between employees to ask two major questions: "What could happen if...?" and "How can it be avoided?"

As safety culture changes employees realize that accidents are avoidable and safety is a universal responsibility. STOP is a company-wide program that involves both office and plant employees. "Through behavioral awareness we build a culture that recognizes, communicates, and takes action to ensure a safe work environment for all employees," said Joe Fleming, Focus Factory Manager for the Vernon plant. Click here to read more about STOP Certification.

Pioneering the academic world with the nation's first ever School of Sustainability, ASU has deployed several new green intiatives throughout the campus, including the addition of environmentally-friendly GreenBuilt compactors. "We chose GreenBuilt because of the solar option. They have made our operation more efficient. Our waste contractor now makes fewer trips to our campus," says Ellen Newell, Associate Director of Facilities Management, Ground Services for ASU.

Created in 2007, the Global Institute of Sustainability and the School of Sustainability are the collective results of more than 30 years of research and collaborative efforts of the faculty, students, and alumini of ASU. There is a transdisciplinary focus on solving economic, societal, and environmental challenges to sustainability that face present and future generations.

"As part of the operations management team, my role is to look at our processes and find ways to reduce our energy use while maintaining services," said Newell. "Using the solar compactor is part of our greater sustainability initiatives and our goal of lowering our carbon footprint and becoming carbon neutral."
