Here is some optimism about a very real fact. Only about 10% of New Year’s resolutions actually get well…….resolved. See the positive view versus the “an overwhelming 9 out of 10 fail miserably”? There are a few insights in this. One is outlook and the other is perspective. Wouldn’t it be great to be the 1 out of 10 who accomplishes it? You may be thinking, “What are they doing that I am not? What if there was a better way to make it really work?”

The first point is to embrace accountability (one or more people who have an interest in your success and will keep you focused on the goal). The second point is being realistic—now this is not limiting but actually more revealing than you may think! (Your resolution should involve plussing (enhancing) your life, not just giving something up.) The third is to look back often at what you have accomplished and how far you have come. It could be only hours or days, but indeed, that is forward progress. Another critical concept: You do not have to wait until January 1 to invoke change. If you want to make a real change then do it today, as in now. If you really want change then take away the alibis we all use to defer and procrastinate, make change a part of who you are. Understand that the world, and everything around you, is changing so either work with it or be run over by it. What are you going to change and how bad do you want it? Give me your thoughts or challenge my answer.

If you make something public or use a free service to “share” information, it has the possibility to be know by more people than you may want. Here is part of his recent quote in the Wall Street Journal

“‘I don’t believe society understands what happens when everything is available, knowable and recorded by everyone all the time,’ [Schmidt] says. He predicts, apparently seriously, that every young person one day will be entitled automatically to change his or her name on reaching adulthood in order to disown youthful hijinks stored on their friends’ social media sites,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

The top reasons range from communication issues with management, lack of being promoted to being overworked. What does this say to you about the decisions people make even when the national unemployment is above 9.5%? What are people willing to trade to stay employed, yet how far can they be pushed before they decide to leave? What do you do to keep your employees engaged?

What does this say to you about the decisions people make even when the national unemployment is above 9.5%? What are people willing to trade to stay employed, yet how far can they be pushed before they decide to leave? What do you do to keep your employees engaged?

According to Regus, a provider of flexible workspaces, every two out of five professionals think about quitting their jobs after taking their summer vacations. Is this what people are thinking of as they return to work after the summer?

Of course millions of workers heard about JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater’s spectacular “I quit” recently, grabbing a beer and sliding down the plane’s emergency chute. But he hadn’t been on vacation. In fact, he probably needed one and thankfully has gotten his wish with current media and press attention.

But apparently a vacation doesn’t help for many workers. With national unemployment staggeringly high and currently stagnating what will this mean for the future of the American worker? What are your thoughts?

According to the U.S. Copyright Office, earlier this week, they decided that jailbreaking iPhones wont violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. But given Apple’s opposition to the practice, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Apple get more aggressive about voiding the warranties of those who dare to engage in the practice.

Below is what you should be looking for in a citation whether it be in text, speech, or a presentation. If in a speech it is not necessary to state every piece of information. The author or title of the book where the information came from should be sufficient.

1. Author:
Who wrote the book, article, or journal

2. Title:
Title of the book, manuscript, census record, etc.
Title of an article, followed by the title of the periodical it is in.

3. Publication information:
Place of publication, name of the publisher, and date of publication or copyright of the book, written in parentheses as (Place: Publisher, Date).
Volume, issue, and page numbers of the periodical.

4. Where you found it (and where it is normally kept, if different):
Today spoke about candidates for jobs wearing jeans, purple sweat suits, and spike heels or sneakers. Other applicants showed pierced body parts, spiked hair or chewed gum. According to the article, the outlandish dress costs some candidates their jobs and rightly so. In a floundering market you must do everything in your power to get that job. Which means Dressing for success!
Most interviewers state that they can make their mind up about a candidate in 30 seconds. This is how long you have to impress them. According to Kim Zoller at Image Dynamics 55% of another person’s perception of you is based on how you look. It makes sense to dress your best for the interview, regardless of the dress code at the organization. If you’re in doubt about how to dress for an interview, it is best to err on the side of conservatism.

There are now millions of expatriates that make their living away from their hometowns. The Middle East in itself can be daunting because of the differences in culture, but knowing some of the etiquette will aid anyone thinking of moving abroad.

The major religion in the Middle East (with the exception of Israel) is Islam. The religion is such a prominent part of daily life in those countries that a basic knowledge of general Islamic practices is critical.

Prayers are said five times per day and all business ceases during prayer times. Avoid traveling to Middle Eastern countries during the holy month of Ramadan. Which this year will start in mid August.

Two major celebrations, Eid al-Fitr, following Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, following the annual pilgrimage, occur every year. Business shuts down for several days during those celebrations. Some businesses will close for longer periods of time around these festivals.

Handshakes are a customary greeting and may be lengthy. With more familiar contacts, a hug is also expected or various kisses on the checks. Be aware that men hold hands with other men as a form of courtesy.

Business cards are an essential part of business in the Middle East. Have your card printed in English on one side and Arabic on the other if traveling to an Arab nation.

Zoe will be in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates from July 5 to August 5. She will be continuing her internship abroad and is hoping to gain from the experience of being in another country.

Goals and objectives can make or break an organization. From top to bottom they are important in the creation, implementation and evaluation of an organization to an individual.

At the highest level objectives are used as a guide for further fulfillment and seen prominently on your resume or, as it is named overseas, Curriculum Vitae (CV). Have you ever paid much attention to those first couple of sentences? You may think they are skimmed over by prospective employees but according to multiple sources, objectives and goals when trying to attain a job are of high significance. Without knowing where you want to be, how can an employer put you anywhere?

Here are a few helpful tips to spicing up you objectives section of your resume or CV:

The objective is sometimes stated more as, “What is the next step in my career?” This should be a short, concise statement that informs the employer what kind of position you are looking for. The type of position, the role (managerial, supervisor, contractor) should be included as well.

Don’t hold back! Your resume should be a reflection of your greatest traits so make your objective match. Employers want to see driven and motivated people on their teams.

If you are job hunting it is a good idea to have several resumes or CVs with different profiles or objectives.

They may hear something, but do they really listen? You might say “I have too much on my mind,” or “I’m not interested,” or “It doesn’t concern me,” but these are alibis (excuses) that give us a chance to tune out.

Listening involves focus and also the intent to actually hear what is being said. And if we don’t listen to what we tell ourselves, how can we listen to others? We say to ourselves that we should eat better, exercise, be “happy” or whatever, yet we don’t listen because we don’t do it.

We hear what we tell ourselves, we just don’t want to commit. If we really want to gain value from what is being said, we need to focus and listen—honor the person we are engaged in conversation with by listening.

Who are you listening to?

What are you listening for?”

I am sure there are times in your life where you look at a situation and say that you can do it or that “I wish I could make that happen”. The big difference between those that think and those that do is desire and then action. We all see things we dislike and do what we can to avoid them, for example, smoking is something I never did and decide not do. I have seen family members deal with the consequences of smoking and I have made a conscious choice to avoid it.

But as humans do we make our choices by seeing things that we detest and thus try to do the opposite or do we look for things we admire and embrace those. Yet there is a third choice. That would be to reflect on what we want for ourselves (not based on what society and the mass media says we should want) and embrace the way we are created. Let’s take that to the next level…

Look at today as 24 hours to either use with intention or misuse and squander. I know we can work at our jobs, duties, and requirements of life with intention. It would be where you purposefully and deliberately put forth effort that would produce fruitful results. Even if we dislike doing what is “required” we still must realize that we are using our most precious and limited asset: Time.

If you are enjoying a vacation or sweeping floors you are indeed using an asset that is unique to you, which is our limited lifetime. Remember this- Have purpose and intention in whatever you put your time into and it will never be wasted, but done with a purpose based on steps in your life’s goals.
