We just had a terrific first trade show of the year. AmericasMart reported a show record for first day attendance at The Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market. It was great to see many of our clients and meet new ones. Ten days until the New York Fair!

Christmas Shops at Macy’s Herald Square – December 15, 2011

Many people have been asking me to post photos of the Christmas Shops at Macy’s Herald Square. Here they are. One shop is across from Santa Claus on the 8th floor. It was pretty quiet when this photo was taken but I’m told it’s crazy busy right now. The second Shop is on the 9th floor by Christmas Lane.

If you can brave the crowds, visiting the store is a holiday tradition for many people and worth the trip.

New York – Guggenheim Museum Commission – November 27, 2011

The Guggenheim Museum has asked me to create a Pop-Out! of their iconic building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I’m thrilled about it, but this Pop-Out! is going to be a challenge. The biggest one being how to interpret those curves? My work is very flat and it’s all about simplifying lines and complex shapes while keeping the subject recognizable. It has to read correctly. Sometimes I go too far and people aren’t quite sure what they’re looking at. Other times I don’t go far enough and the graphics are heavy and unappealing.

Bernar Venet at Versailles – November 18, 2011

I happened to be in Paris with my parents this fall when French artist Bernar Venet took over from Takashi Murakami as guest artist of the Chateau de Versailles. I loved this exhibition. The curves of his red and brown steel arcs against the geometric lines of the gardens looked so happy together. I was introduced to his work by a friend who used to supply the steel for his sculptures. Venet is quite the perfectionist and a stickler for details but I’m told he was quite proud of this show. There are more than 300 Chocolateries and twice as many Patisseries in Paris. Please be sure to check out Jacques Genin’s shop, he’s the madman who started the made-to-order millefeuille craze.
We spent a few hours there enjoying in disbelief what we were eating. On our way out we sampled and bought some of his chocolates packaged in a beautiful metal box. But the thing that probably gets people coming back the most are his caramels. I’d recommend a bag of the mango caramels.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police – November 18, 2011

This month Scholastic is re-releasing my first book The Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I originally self published this book after a few publishers turned it down for being a little too controversial. It was soon picked up by Scholastic who’ve done a terrific job bringing the true story of the RCMP to kids across the country. It’s received several awards and has been in print since 1994.

Five Windows at Macy’s Herald Square – July 29, 2011

I was so proud to see my art displayed in the windows of Macy’s Herald Square last week. The amazing visual display team make everything pop and look so playful. We had a small celebration outside the store, took photos, then headed down to SoHo for dinner. The windows have been up now for a few weeks but should be there a little while longer. I’ve already been back a few times to take more pictures. I still can’t believe it.

The Atlanta Gift Market is the first of two trade shows for this Fall. We’re introducing Notebooks, Notepads, Noteblocks, Greeting Cards and Holiday Cards. We’re also testing the waters with a few tote bags.
