MIGRATING FROM BLOGGER

2015-09-09T16:34:00.000+10:00

Hi all,

This site has become sadly neglected over the past couple of years due to my university commitment. I am in process of completing a Master of Contemporary Art at the VCA. In any case I have migrated all previous posts to a centralised website HERE. I will probably not delete the blogger site just yet but would definitely recommend having a look at my new site. It is more of a portfolio than a pure blog but if you go to the ABOUT ME /BLOG page thats where all my old posts and newer ones will be.

Anyway, this will be it for a little while on this page. I may come back if I find a use for it.

Best,

Marcel

Masters blog sketch book

2014-07-16T21:50:00.000+10:00

Ok since, I am undertaking a masters degree and pretty much everything I do is assesable in someway I have set up a tumblr page as a sort of visual/audio diary of what I have been up to. This does not mean I am abandoning this by any stretch of the imagination, however it does mean I need to consider what role this page fills.
Yes it does exist as an archive of previous work and I want it to remain significant so I will need to update it from time to time to include things that are more significant.
So if the tumblr page is like a visual diary or sketch/scrap book then this is more like my public studio, not everything is on show but it houses important developments in my practice.

The tumblr site if you are interested in looking into my sketch book is vcamca14

This brings me to the next point. I have as you may notice been spending significant amounts of my energies on Photography. I think I have doing this because I sense that it is problematic in some way that has scope for exploration. It has been bugging me as people begin to refer to my practice as photographic one which it is not. Rather it is a practice that includes photography. I had a conversation recently with a friend who is a photographer and had that epiphany moment where I was talking about what I have been doing with the coffee development etc, and realised that it doesn't really mean anything other than being something to obsess over and make fairly empty images. This does not mean I will stop this exploration, it is not what I was thinking it was. I am not sure what is next for it at the moment.

Another thing to talk about briefly and so I can put some pictures up is focus. So I have been finding it incredibly hard to have any kind of sustained focus of late and I could blame the plethora of things to distract myself with but I think the honest reason would have to be lack of discipline. So I have been attempting to maintain discipline through initially meditation and now more so through Drawing, which of course is in its self a form of meditation.

NEW WEBSITE UP FOR ART

2014-06-01T00:42:00.002+10:00

I have put together a website just for my Art as a kind of visual CV or Folio. Just because I have done that does not mean I am abandoning this. It just means that I have a more professional place to direct curators etc. Its been a very fun process and I will continue to play with it no doubt.

This is what it looks like at the moment

SOME PICTURES FROM THE PAST WEEK

2014-05-18T00:04:00.000+10:00

These will serve until I can upload the rest to flickr. To the left is an image from the group exhibition mention in the last post at The Food Court. It was an unexpected great night! and below is an image from a performance on the 15-5-14 at Loop Bar, which was fantastic. I will be uploading sound and video once the material has been edited.

Whats New?

2014-05-07T21:07:00.000+10:00

Ok, its time to keep this more for people to actually get an idea of whats happening rather than sporadically uploading some stuff and leaving huge holes. FYI, if you are unsure of what I have been up to my CV page is generally pretty up to date.

So what have I been up to, and whats coming up?

I am part of a show on the 10th of May at The Food Court, the title of the show is, COME AS YOU ARE. This will be a fun show at an exciting space in an abandoned food court down in the Docklands of Melbourne.

I am also performing at Loop Bar on the 15th of May. I will be creating a slow minimal ambient soundtrack from samples taken from the original soundtrack to the 70's "hit" Charriots of the Gods. I am working with the idea "getting intimate with an alien".

And in other news, I've started a Master Contemporary Art at the VCA. So for the next two years I will be in the familiar embrace of the Art Institution. There are lots of reasons for wanting to do this, including updating my knowledge, and re-focusing my practice.

Other things I have been doing? Well if you look below this post you will probably notice a bunch of black and white photographic work. I have been interested in exploring my relationship to the medium. It has been fairly central in a lot of what I have made over the years either as a tool to document or to quickly sketch out spacial propositions. In addition to this utilitarian mode it has been there to quickly grab not just what I see but how I see through a large collection of incidental photography. This recent investigation has included various experiments with; Pinhole Photography, Caffenol which is a kind of homemade photographic chemistry process using instant coffee, developing colour film in black and white chemistry and caffenol, and developing colour slide film at home.

WHATS HAPPENING?

2014-04-30T18:30:00.000+10:00

As always heaps of things are happening. Currently, I thinking about my work and what I want to do with it.
I had a great chat today and discussed how the decision to be an Artist is political. How distraction can be a way to control.

This is the first roll of Surveillance film I have shot. I just received a bulk roll of it and this is the resulting test roll. It has been developed in caffenol for 70 mins. I only used coffee and washing soda in this recipe. It was also the first roll developed from a new camera purchase, the Mamiya 135ef

COLOUR FILM DEVELOPED IN B/W CHEMS 2013, a set on Flickr.

Here are a few pictures I have developed. They're colour film developed in black and white developer. Still fairly experimental and very fun to make. The colour has come through the scanning process and very little else has been done. I have not yet attempted to process these negatives in a dark room to get prints but feel that, that is the next step.
