We are cover star's at SMH, Inc with our wreath making the Nov cover of CB2's latest Holiday themed catalog. We have featured some preliminary images already in previous drops and on the net, but this is it folks, The main catalog out for the season. This is where all our images styled for the season are featured.

Here you will see some new images that we shot in Chicago some months back with the wonderful Photographer, Jonny Valiant.

All shot in-house at the Crate & Barrel studio, we get to work with an amazing team that pull out all the stops, All sets are designed and built on site, We spend a number of days designing the different sets for different spreads being conscious to mix up the look and feel of each set. this door on the cover was custom made and has a beautiful arch design which is very difficult to make. We hope you enjoy the remainder of the CB2 images SMH, Inc had the pleasure to work on.

SMH, Inc is happy to see some more holiday shots appearing online for CB2. We recently worked on the Holidays for CB2 in Chicago with the wonderful Photographer Jonny Valiant.

These images appear largely in the new Gift Guide and online in banners on the site.

Holidays are always fun at CB2 with a new range of product available each year. My favorite thing is to see what nutcracker we will be featuring as the theme swaps out from year to year, This year he was a superhero so we got to come up with the concept of a superhero in his own custom mini metropolis.

Pineapple motifs make a big splash this year and we had fun with pineapple print and planters.

With only 2 months left till Christmas day, It's time to start thinking about the season, Look for more images soon for CB2 from SMH, Inc in coming posts

Garnet Hill/ Fall Catalog

2015-10-23T09:56:00.000-07:00

Photography: Ryan Liebe, Styling: Studio Marcus Hay, Inc

For Fall this year, SMH, Inc travelled to New Hampshire to work on the latest catalog for The Garnet Hill Fall Catalog. It's always a pleasure to head north to work on these projects. This time we got to work with the very talented Photographer for the first time, Ryan Liebe which was a pleasure.

We have had a long history with the company and are very familiar with the product and customer. With a very edited approach and with the country of Italy as inspiration, we worked with beautiful stucco inspired sets and created warm and moody environments that co existed with the fashion element of the catalog that was actually shot in Italy (lucky them! ; )

We have since ventured up again where SMH, Inc actually art directed the next catalog due out next year for Spring, look out for that one soon!

Carters/ 150th Birthday

Photography: Amanda Pratt, Styling: Studio Marcus Hay, Inc

The Team, Photography: Amanda Pratt

Earlier this year, Studio Marcus Hay, Inc was asked to join the Carter's team to style the sets and props for 150 years of Carters. We were excited to join the team which included a endless stream of very cute babies and with them cast especially by Studio Marcus Hay, Inc also two very cute English bulldog puppies who were the star of the show.

A baby shoot of this proportion is a big production and requires a lot of patience and happy vibes. The babies featured had to be content and ready to perform and with dogs and cakes made by the very talented Ryan Reineck balloons and handmade confetti, You can imagine how many times we had to clean that set ready for the next baby.

It really is incredible to see how a shoot like this is handled and the team above including the wonderful Photographer Amanda Pratt all work in tandem to provide a space that can effectively shoot the kids who at such a young age are not always predictable.

Happy Birthday Carter's and thanks for letting us be a part

Alongside the photo's, Two video's also styled by Studio Marcus Hay, inc are easily watched here at Pat Bates & Associates and are super cute. Scroll down on the site linked to view them.

Williams Sonoma Home has embraced Holidays in full force with their new Holiday catalog for 2015. Working once again with the wonderful Photographer Paul Raeside Studio Marcus Hay, Inc spent a number of weeks this year in San Francisco shooting for both Williams Sonoma Home and Cooks, stay tuned for more posts!

Williams Sonoma Home this year has embraced animal print, faux fur and plaid mixed in with lots of red, green and metallics, particularly gold as an accent. The feeling is very luxe and majestic.

Traveling to Sonoma we spent much of the shoot in a magnificent house on the hill that became the backdrop for many of these photo's.

Thanks to my fantastic Assistants Andrea Greco and Tessa Watson for all the present wrapping and trimming, It took a good part of the day just to dress the tree that stood at a whopping 9 feet tall.

Hope you enjoy the festive spirit and it gets you in the mood for the season.

Studio Marcus Hay has just completed it's round of Holiday shoots and have promptly moved onto Spring but right now as the weather cools and we had into the season of celebration, it seems appropriate to finally embrace this for real.

Working with Photographer Jonny Valiant is always a great experience and with a few weeks in Chicago, Studio Marcus Hay once again loved working with the team, special thanks to Ronnie Haynes and Cory Eigenschenk my wonderful assistants who did an amazing job of keeping calm and collected even when a few decorations fell off the trees.

This is only a soft sell version for the Holidays with CB2, stay tuned for the bumper issue for Christmas coming out soon.

Photography: Studio Marcus Hay, Inc

At Studio Marcus Hay, Inc we love being handy with our Instagram and capturing the world around us, On recent trips and even at home we are constantly amazed by the combo of colors and how they resonate with each other. We have discovered a love of pinks, tan, browns and grays as a combo and found two complimentary images this month that speak to this. Marcus has an amazing collection of plates that line the walls of his kitchen and we found inspiration in this shot of these which include Rosenthal and Fornasetti plates. In San Francisco at a favourite hangout called The Mill, there is currently an exhibition of beautiful paintings by artist Gayle Walsworth called Nights of Love, The colors are so beautiful in these paintings. We hope you are inspired.

For the new look in our The Lab section at our website for our regular Get The Look we feature a shot from the latest DWR catlaog we styled. It is the U Turn Chair. Studio Marcus Hay, Inc styled the above shot for the U Turn chair designed by the famous Neils Bendtsen. Made in Italy in the softest Kalahari leather, we gave this beautiful chair a setting with a complimentary palette of caramels, soft greys and linens, a favourite combo at S.M.H. Using photographs and paintings inspired by nature, we also added the surprise punch of a modern petal clock designed by George Nelson and Grasshopper Floor Lamp by one of our favourite designers Greta Grossman.

Design Within Reach/ September Catalog

2015-09-02T07:16:00.001-07:00

Photography: Jim Bastardo, Styling: Studio Marcus Hay, inc

For the September edition of the Design With Reach catalog, Studio Marcus Hay, Inc joined the team once again to shoot a batch of new images in locations in Brooklyn, Manhattan and The Hampton’s. We love our DWR projects and we also pack in a lot of hard work but a lot of fun too!

This time around with this group of images we got to explore a lot more still life as well as large room settings and also a lot of new product for DWR including a brand new range of pillows and lot’s of great new rugs. We also got to explore some great classics in new fabrications such as a favorite, The Egg Chair by Arne Jacobsen.

Again this season the palette was somewhat neutral and we were conscious to embrace this by working with many of the natural wood tones in the product and pairing them with crisp black and whites and hits of accent colors.

We also got to play around with some fun themes like the Architects office featured above.

We are really happy with above shots and hope you like them too.

Thanks to my team at SMH, Inc, In particular Mykl, Quin and Sally.

These photographs are taken by the legendary Jim Bastardo.

Back to the farm/ Williams Sonoma/ Fall, 2015

2015-08-29T07:56:00.000-07:00

Photography: Mikkel Vang, Styling: Studio Marcus Hay, Inc

As in most photo shoots, there are many shots that just can’t fit onto the pages of a catalog or magazine. When Studio Marcus Hay, Inc joined Williams Sonoma in Fishkill Farm for Open Kitchen we shot for 3 days solid and straight days, come rain or shine. We even spent the first day shooting product shots under the only outdoor covered area, which was the verandah leading off the farm store during heavy rain, needless to say we all returned to the hotel that night fulfilled but a little damper.

The great thing about being on an outdoor photo shoot is that it is always an adventure and while you work hard often creating environments in the middle of nowhere, you always have mother nature to help you along as a backdrop, but as we all know mother nature is unpredictable and at times a little wild so you do have to be sensible and at times deal with unruly situations. I can only imagine what it is like working on a farm, dealing with these elements, your day determined by the weather as a start.

Dodging sunburn, ticks and other critters is part and parcel and stylists that turn up in high heals looking for the glam world of photography ain't going to cut it on a farm and let me tell you I have had some of those Assistants in my day but thankfully I had a great robustly enthusiastic team, a big shout out to Quin, Andrea and Jill for being such troopers.

I grew up in the city but I would occasionally visit my second cousin’s farm in rural Australia and I often laugh at the memory of the wispy fringed blond kid in my Blondie T-Shirt being whisked around on the back of a motorbike over acres of muddy property clinging to the back of one my much tougher third cousin’s waist (who indecently were all from a family of girls) for dear life. I was scared to death but I still kind of loved it. For a city fellow, the farm still brings out an inner delight but I have to say a hot shower at the end of the day is what I crave for most of the day.

Thanks again to Fishkill Farm for being so accommodating and Thanks again to Williams Sonoma for the opportunity.

The Fishkill Farm story was photographed by the uber talented Mikkel Vang, Food Stylist Alison Attenborough also wove her magic, Also check out the video for the project we shot and extra pics including all the guests from the farm here at the Williams Sonoma Taste blog.

Trends Home Magazine/ China

2015-08-19T15:39:00.000-07:00

Photography: Hai Zhang

A few months back I had the pleasure of working with the team at Trends Home in China, Photographer Hai Zhang and Writer Viviana Wang, Trends Home contributors based in New York visited the apartment and studio to write about and photograph them for a story.

Trends Home Magazine was founded in 2000 and has become the leading brand in home magazines in China. Trends Home has the largest circulation in its market in China and is a very popular publication.

The approach was to capture the spaces as naturally as possible with minimal propping and as my apartment and studio is already set up in real life. A quick trip to the flower market in the morning and all was set.

Many of you who follow the blog would have seen these spaces featured already, We hope you enjoy the new set of pictures captured for our Chinese audience and followers.

Thanks to Editor Weina Li for taking an interest in Studio Marcus Hay and including us in this story.

Williams Sonoma/ Open Kitchen/ Fishkill Farm

2015-07-19T20:34:00.000-07:00

Photography: Mikkel Vang, Styling: Studio Marcus Hay, Inc

At the beginning of June, Studio Marcus Hay joined the Williams Sonoma team at Fishkill Farm in Hopewell, Upstate NY to help produce a story for the Fall Catalog, styling an event to be photographed on the farm for the Open Kitchen line available at Williams Sonoma.

Fishkill Farms is a historic apple orchard that has been in the Morgenthau family for nearly 100 years. With the hard work and dedication of the team, Fishkill Farms has grown from a conventionally farmed apple orchard in need of new trees and new tractors, into a diversified, ecological farm with new orchards and infrastructures. Here are the additions to the farm in the past few years:15 acres of diverse vegetable plantings, pasture-raised hens, many acres of new fruit trees, farmer's markets nearby and in New York City, and a pick-your-own CSA. The mission of the farm has been to marry its historic identity as a family "u-pick" apple orchard, with the Fishkill Farms team's shared goals of diversification and environmental stewardship through sustainable farming methods.

It is a wonderfully inspiring place and the Fishkill Farm folk were a pleasure to work with the team. We spent a number of days there shooting a menu for a dinner that took place in one of the apple orchards.Studio Marcus Hay created a table setting for

Special thanks to our team members Jill Skoda and Andrea Greco who went above and beyond and stayed very late on the last night to pack up. It was wonderful to work with Photographer Mikkel Vang, It was a long time between drinks and of course Food Stylist Alison Attenborough and Art Director Scot Schy.

Paul McCobb is one of those influential designers that seem to have slipped under the radar, Most people in design circles in the States know and admire his work and he is highly collectible but unlike some of the other design superstars like George Nelson, Florence Knoll and The Eames of that era, Paul McCobb seems to have gained slightly less attention. His work combined the attributes of many of his now better-known peers. Like Bauhaus designers such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer, his furniture had purity of form and line. Like his fellow designer’s of that era, McCobb’s work was efficient and purposeful.

McCobb was born in Medford, Massachusetts, Young and artistic, McCobb studied art, drawing and painting at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston but not completing his course there. McCobb enlisted in the Army in 1942 also in Boston but only served in the military for a year.

McCobb first gained attention in 1948 as a design and decorating consultant for Modernage Furniture in NY. While employed at Modernage, McCobb met B.G Mesberg, his later business partner in the Planner and Directional furniture lines. Other well-known furniture lines designed by McCobb include Predictor by O'Hearn Furniture, The Irwin Group by Calvin Furniture, The Connoisseur Collection by H. Sacks & Sons and The Calvin Group by Calvin Furniture which is our favorite line here at Studio Marcus Hay.

He is also well known for his ceramics line and helped, alongside Russel Wright to introduce high design to the mainstream.

Thanks to the guys at JustL in New Hampshire, We recently purchased a fantastic piece, a maple and leatherette credenza designed by McCobb for the Calvin Group and it now proudly houses our ever growing LP collection, It brought to the room an instant elevated sense of sophistication and unity, We simply love it! Mccobb’s pieces mix in seamlessly with other contemporary furniture, the simple classic lines and great materials and craftsmanship can be admired for years.

These layouts were designed by Studio Marcus Hay, Inc for the educational purposes of promoting McCobbs work on this blog only, We will happily credit any known photographs.

Material World

2015-07-11T11:28:00.001-07:00

Photography: Kat Teustch,

In the Lab at Studio Marcus Hay, Inc, we continue to explore the value of materials in a images created by Studio Marcus Hay and how this combination of chosen materials helps create the mood and feel of the image created. Almost dissected we have pulled out the key materials from one of our favorite Studio Marcus Hay images. This image shot by Photographer Kat Teutsch is from one of our New York Stories series and best reflects a clever use of materials such as patinaed/ distressed wood, burled wood, powder coated metal and hand painted ceramic glaze. We will continue this series in the future so look out for them. It really is a fun way to look at the different uses of materials and the world they can create.
