Of course, as time went on, throwing all sorts of Mardi Gras items became popular. The doubloon was introduced by Rex in 1960 and became the most prized throw for almost 30 years. The shinny metal was very appealing and the sound of the coins dancing on the streets when large handfuls were released from the floats was irresistible. As the doubloon's popularity declined after many years, Masked Riders began throwing krewe specific trinkets, plush, and specialty beads.

Throwing creates a great interaction between the krewes and the crowds, allowing everyone to become a real part of the celebration. Carnival and Mardi Gras is a time when everybody can get together and Laissez les bons temps rouler (Lay say lay bohn tohn roo lay). Dats French for let the good times roll.
