After working for much of his life as a gardener in his dusty Algerian village, Mounir dreams of improving his family’s fortune and gaining a measure of respect by marrying off his narcoleptic sister, Rym, to a “real gentleman.” However, Rym has other plans—she dreams of marrying Mounir’s best friend, Khliffa, who has secretly courted her for years. When Mounir lashes out at village gossip with a fib that he has promised Rym to a wealthy outsider, she comes out of her sleepy stupor to embrace the rumor and press her real betrothed into action. Around the soldier’s account Mograbi interweaves a couple’s extended and often agonizing discussion of their relationship, punctuated by Mograbi himself characteristically addressing the camera. Adding further layers of complexity are the use of a digital “mask,” both to disguise the young soldier’s identity and foreground the politics of the camera as witness, and Mograbi’s radical decision to perform his own musings as Brechtian songs, set to Weill-ian music. The radical elements of Mograbi’s project combine to raise painful and unsettling questions about responsibility, forgiveness and the shape of cinematic truth.
Event Description: This presentation compares the 1834 arrival in Iran of Justin Perkins, who led the ABCFM mission in Urmia, Iran, for thirty five years, with a trip Perkins made back to the United States in 1842. On his visit home, Perkins brought with him Mar Yohannan, the Bishop of Urmia, and the two spent over a year in the US before returning to Persia. On his first tour of Iran, Perkins distributed printed Classical Syriac books and in doing so disrupted the prior economy and culture of books that had existed among Christians in the region. Because of his Calvinism, Perkins misrecognized the process of gift exchange in which he was engaged with his Nestorian/East-Syrian hosts. This episode illuminates the relationships between media and language ideology, between systems of gift-exchange and the theology of the free gift, and between gratitude and a sense of wonder. Ultimately, this paper shows how Protestant religious reform stimulated a secular understanding, and thus a further reification, of religion.

When I began my study of the 1930’s conflict between Turkey and France over the province of Alexandretta, I set out to examine the League of Nations’ implementation of their ideology of “self-determination of peoples” in the interwar Middle East. I had planned to study the League’s mediation among established collectives in the disputed provinces of Alexandretta and Mosul, and to document and analyze the claims of competing nationalist groups. I found, to my surprise, that the people of Alexandretta and Mosul did not exist in exclusive, self-contained identity groups vying for resources and recognition. On the contrary, their affiliations were fluid and ambiguous, and issues largely unrelated to their “essential” identities took predominance in their politics and their worldviews. BUDRUS director Julia Bacha will participate in Q&A’s at the Music Hall after the 7:20 screening on Friday, October 22 and after the 5 o’clock and 7:20 screenings on Saturday October 23.

Film Summary
Budrus is an award-winning feature documentary film about a Palestinian community organizer, Ayed Morrar, who unites local Fatah and Hamas members along with Israeli supporters in an unarmed movement to save his village of Budrus from destruction by Israel’s Separation Barrier. Success eludes them until his 15-year-old daughter, Iltezam, launches a women’s contingent that quickly moves to the front lines. Struggling side by side, father and daughter unleash an inspiring, yet little-known, movement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories that is still gaining ground today. In an action-filled documentary chronicling this movement from its infancy, Budrus shines a light on people who choose nonviolence to confront a threat. The movie is directed by award-winning filmmaker Julia Bacha (co-writer and editor of Control Room and co-director Encounter Point), and produced by Bacha, Palestinian journalist Rula Salameh, and filmmaker and human rights advocate Ronit Avni (formerly of WITNESS, Director of Encounter Point).
Event Description: DESCRIPTION

The Free Palestine Walks are silent marches to take place in October on behalf of an equitable U.S. policy toward Palestine that advances freedom and equality for the Palestinian people.
The Free Palestine Walks have two major goals:
First, to raise awareness about the situation in Palestine among Americans who will take part in, sponsor and observe the walks, including your family members, friends, neighbors and community members.
And second, to raise funds for a powerful AAPER advertising campaign to be launched in the cities where the Walks took place.
Like AIDS Walks, Breast Cancer Walks, and Freedom Walks during the Civil Rights Movement, the Free Palestine Walks can have a major impact across the United States as we work to advance an equitable U.S. policy toward Palestine that finally advances freedom for the Palestinian people!

Before October 20: $15
