Precious Sets Box Office Record - Entertainment Weekly

The most newsworthy box-office story of the weekend was the record-breaking opening for Precious, the Oprah-endorsed and Sundance-winning drama starring Mo'Nique, Mariah Carey, and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe. On only 18 screens, Precious grossed $ 1.8 million for a per-screen average of $ 100,000--the largest per-screen average ever for a movie opening in more than 10 theaters. With many Oscar prognosticators--including EW's Dave Krager--calling the film one of the front-runners of the awards season, Precious has an undoubtedly bright future in store as it gradually expands into additional markets throughout November.

Krager lists "Precious" as a Best Bet to get into the Best Picture category, and lists Mariah as a possibility to get nominated in Best Supporting Actress:

Best Supporting Actress, Mariah Carey: Once people get past the strange concept of Carey as an Oscar contender, they won't be able to deny the power of her few scenes as a social worker. If you ask me, she more than deserves to be in this race.

"Precious" Stuns with $ 100,000k weekend average - IndieWire

Lee Daniels' "Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire" has exceeded even the highest of expectations in its opening weekend, according to estimates provided by Rentrak earlier today. The film - which has been the source of much anticipation and buzz since its Sundance debut in January - grossed a stunning $ 1,800,000 from just 18 theaters over the weekend, averaging an essentially unheard of $ 100,000. That gives it the third best live action per-theater-average of all time, surpassed only by 2006's "Dreamgirls" and 2005's "Brokeback Mountain." However, those two films had opened on 3 and 5 theaters respectively. "Precious"'s wide-by-comparison 18 theaters make it all the more impressive.

"Precious" was distributed by Lionsgate, who had acquired the film shortly after Sundance in a heated bidding war. The deal, brokered by Cinetic, was said to be worth $ 5.5 million, and weaved in the support of both Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, who came on board as executive producers. The plan obviously seems to have worked so far, with theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta reporting large crowds and sell out shows for "Precious." The film grossed $ 587,859<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt" ;="" new="" roman="" times="" serif="" ,=""> on Friday, and then rose to $ 699,514 on Saturday (averaging $ 38,800 per theater on that day alone), and was estimated to take in an additional $ 512,627 today. That already makes it the fourth highest grossing Sundance Narrative Grand Jury Prize winner this decade.

The numbers countered the early expectations that director Lee Daniels says he had for the movie. "It's still a bit premature as all the weekend numbers aren't in yet," Daniels told indieWIRE on Saturday, just as the film passed the $ 1 million mark. "Remember, I thought 'Push/Precious' was going straight to DVD and I was cool with that. So, when I got this info I was slayed."

"Precious" will expand considerably this Friday, November 13th, both within the markets it debuted in and in the Philadelphia, Dallas, Washington, San Francisco, and Houston areas.

You'd be forgiven for not recognizing Mariah Carey in her role as a dowdy welfare caseworker in the urban drama "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."

The legendary pop diva underwent a soup-to-nuts physical transformation, checking her glossy celebrity patina at the door in order to convincingly portray the film's Ms. Weiss: a drab but deeply empathetic soul helping a troubled teenager in '80's Harlem. Far from the image Carey has cultivated for years, the character is no oil painting of music-video pulchritude, with her lank hair, a wardrobe of rayon sweater-coats and yes, even a sparse mustache creeping across her upper lip.

I had to lose all vanity." Carey said. "I had to change my demeanor, my inside, layers of who I am, to become that woman."

How R&B's most unabashedly glamorous chanteuse came to sport facial hair -- how Carey came to defy all expectations by delivering what some are describing as an Oscar-worthy performance in "Precious" at all -- is one of those quirky sagas upon which indie film-world dreams are made.

Transcending simple stunt casting, the performance strikes a unique dramatic tone, balancing a lived-in physical presence with world-weary empathy.

To read the interview in its entirety click here.

PRECIOUS, the critically acclaimed and award winning film by Lee Daniels is out in select theatersTODAY Friday, November 6, 2009.

Don't miss out on "one of the most important films of this generation" (AOL Black Voices) - Find a theater near you, check showtimes and buy tickets today!

Oprah Winfrey ("this film left me breathless... it split me wide open") and Tyler Perry ("it has the ability and power to change lives") in association with Lionsgate present PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL 'PUSH' BY SAPPHIRE, starring Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd, Lenny Kravitz and introduces Gabourey Sidibe.

Set in Harlem in 1987, PRECIOUS is the story of Claireece "Precious" Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She's pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother (Mo'Nique), a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write.

Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesn't know the meaning of "alternative," but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

PRECIOUS was in Official Selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival - Un Certain Regard, and winner of three awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival including the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. The film was also the centerpiece of the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival Gala Presentation on September 12, 2009, where it received the festival's 2009 Cadillac People's Choice Award. PRECIOUS is the only film ever to receive the Audience awards at both Sundance and Toronto. PRECIOUS has been selected as the 2009 New York Film Festival Centerpiece.

PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL 'PUSH' BY SAPPHIRE is a vibrant, honest and resoundingly hopeful film about the human capacity to grow and overcome. Get your tickets today at precioustickets.com!

Critics talk about PRECIOUS...

"'Precious' is courageous and uncompromising, a shaken cocktail of debasement and elation, despair and hope. Everyone involved deserves credit for creating a movie so dangerous, problematic and ultimately elevating." - John Anderson, Variety

"It is raw, electrically charged, heart-rending and completely shattering." - Rex Reed, The New York Observer

"See it as soon as you can!" - A.O Scott, At The Movies

"'Precious' leaves you moved like no film in years. It has a spirit that soars" - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"'Precious' simply cannot be missed" - Mary Corliss, TIME

"You feel you've witnessed nothing less than the birth of a soul" - Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"In a striking non-star turn, Mariah Carey is credible as a veteran social worker who is jarred by Precious' plight." - Hollywood Reporter

"Among the many delightful surprises in the film is Mariah Carey, who is pitch-perfect as a welfare counselor and serves as this demi-tragedy's Greek chorus. It's possible that many viewers won't recognize her until the final credits, but like so many things about "Precious," the performance is disarming." - Variety

"Precious is great American cinema" - The Associated Press

On its way to the Oscars...

Winner! Sundance Film Festival - Grand Jury Prize

Winner! Sundance Film Festival - Audience Award

Winner! <![endif]--> USA Today
Lee Daniels is the anti-Pygmalion. He loves to knock a diva off her pedestal and bring her down to earth. Hand the filmmaker a gorgeous specimen like Halle Berry and he will strip away all evidence of airbrushed Hollywood artifice to reveal the talent that lies beneath. And, as in Berry's case when she played a dirt-poor widow of a death row convict in 2001's Monster's Ball, her efforts just might lead to an Oscar.

Daniels, who produced Ball, also assumes the mantle of director with Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, one of the year's most talked-about dramas even before it opens Friday.

And what are they talking about, besides how Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry have thrown their clout behind the festival-circuit favorite about a horribly abused Harlem teen, who is obese, illiterate and pregnant with her second child by her father, as she struggles to escape from her hellish life?

Mostly, it's the heartbreakingly honest performances by the film's four main actresses - and that Daniels dared to give Mariah Carey a mustache.

As he says of his cast, "They gave me a miracle, they gave me my truth." Here is the truth behind how each actress defied expectations as a victimized daughter (Gabourey Sidibe), a monstrous mother (Mo'Nique), a selfless teacher (Paula Patton) and a weary social worker (Carey).

The superstar: Mariah Carey as Ms. Weiss
Lee Daniels says: "Mariah is a genius. She does Aretha Franklin, and I don't know a person alive who can talk, enunciate and do Aretha Franklin. She does an Obama that would knock you out. She jumps into these voices. They're like spooky."

Helen Mirren, who appeared in Daniels' Shadowboxer, was supposed to play the no-nonsense, plain-Jane social worker who gradually warms to Precious as she learns more about her horrific circumstances.

But, as Daniels explains, "She got a real job. So, at the last minute, Mariah came in. I think it's great Mariah did it. It would have been expected from Helen. This is not expected."

Indeed. There's the pop goddess, one of the biggest-selling musical artists of all time, bereft of all hints of her usual wham-bam glamour. Instead, Carey is virtually unrecognizable as an office drone done up in '80s frumpery.

"Somebody just said to me, 'You are so ugly in this movie.' Lee really wanted it. It was beyond ordinary. I can deal with a no-makeup look. But he went beyond. He did dark circles under the eyes and a prosthetic nose that made me break out."

Carey couldn't be more pleased that people don't know it's her in Precious.

"I really love it because I get a chance to escape. And that's not easy for me. Even vocally I took my voice to a different place. It was a more guttural type thing. I'm more speedy when I talk. She's very slow."

As for the mustache, Carey can't help but laugh. "They added some (expletive) to my face. I'm not even a hairy person," she says, showing off her barely downy arms. "Lee wanted an extreme look. He wanted ultra-real. I represent the audience pretty much. Mary or Precious might not see her as a welcome friend. But she really does have good intentions."

About Ms. Weiss' unfortunate wardrobe, "It was difficult for me. 'OK, I have to wear this?' Only because I'm so used to controlling my own stuff. But the great thing for me is to be not in control."

That she was helping turn one of her favorite books into a movie more than compensated for any sacrifices. "People assume they know what my life is, but people have no idea," says the Long Island native, 39, who is married to rapper/TV host Nick Cannon. "I have known people who have had very similar lives to Precious. Not necessarily physically, but deep stuff that I don't talk about because it's private. My personal choice is to be as positive as I can. I think that's what helps people."

Carey acknowledges that critics and the public at large still hold Glitter against her, the 2001 showbiz bomb clef that featured the novice actress basically playing herself - only very badly. "People kind of trash me forever for that. That was like eight years ago. Could we let it go now?"

She laughs again. "I did some other work, some independent films, and I really did learn, and stretch and grow. But they weren't this film. Even though I had never performed the new songs before, I had a great time revealing them to the intimate audience. My single Obsessed had the fans singing word for word - that always feels amazing.

I travel heavy with my team, which on this trip includes DJ Suss One, my stylist, my hair stylist, my make-up artist, my manager, my tour manager, my brand manager, my three personal assistants and my puppies, JJ and Cha Cha.

I work out most of my outfits with my stylist. I opened the show in a Tony Ward crystal-beaded minidress with a full tulle skirt like a ballerina, inspired by a princess, of course. Why not? My second was a long black gown with coloured sequins by Marc Bouwer - I love dressing up but I kept stepping on the lace train of the dress and so did all my entourage who walked behind me. I threatened to fire them all if they stepped out of like again. My third dress was by The Blonds and was a hot pink, studded mini.

My show is a non-stop, 90-minute, full-on workout for my vocals and I have to be in tip-top condition, so I sleep as much as possible for two days beforehand. That's why I have ten humidifiers in my room.

After the second night's performance, I raced to the private airfield to fly straight to Toronto. By midnight we were wheels up on the jet.

Sunday - Toronto
At 7am we touched down in Toronto, where three SUVs met us on the private airfield and raced us to the Four Seasons Hotel. My team threw down our luggage in my private suite and spent 60 seconds fixing my hair before dragging me downstairs to a packed press conference room where we began with a photo call for my movie Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. I was asked about my less-than-glamorous image in the film. My character looks, dare to say, homely. But it's not about vanity - it was about me losing any resemblance to the Mariah Carey that people know and doing the inner work that was needed to become Mrs. Weiss, the social worker.

As soon as the press conference was over I was whisked off to do a quick photoshoot for a style magazine. Next, I did 14 back-to-back interviews, which my management had conveniently left out of the schedule that I'd taken a look at that morning!

At 2pm they let me go up to my suite, where I checked on my puppies then fell into a deep sleep for about 40 minutes, which is terrible as you wake up with a sleep hangover.

I was woken to get my hair and make-up done, ready for the first red-carpet event of the night. Ironically, my PR rep had me drive around the venue three times as she didn't want me to arrive too early but I said: "Let's go for it. They're always accusing me in the press of being late and keeping everyone waiting. Let's show them that I can be on time!"

Outside, the red carpet was heaving with fans and I signed a few autographs. I haven't been to Canada for so long, it was nice to see the love and support of those who showed up with pictures and CDs for me to sign.

After I'd mingled with movie bigwigs at the cocktail party and had some fun, we were rushed off to the second red-carpet event of the night, which was crazy pandemonium but lots of fun - I call it "fandomonium". I did around 15 more red-carpet interviews then hurried inside as the screening was about to begin.

At midnight we left and, while everyone else ran to the cars to get to the jet, I walked as fast as physically possible in my vertiginous heels. We were late for our air time slot. I jumped into a waiting car and sped off to the airfield, where the plane was waiting to take me back to my home city of New York.

Monday - New York
It's only an hour to New York City but still I fell asleep under my leopard-print comforter.

We landed in New York at 1am and my car drove me home, where I wound down with my two friends, Rachel and Jasmine. We had some food and watched the beginning of a movie before we all fell asleep.

We slept until 3pm and spent the rest of the day in our PJs hanging out, making breakfast at 7pm (pretty early time for me!). What can I say? I'm a night owl. Then we talked girly stuff until the early hours of the morning. Of course, I made sure I watched my husband Nick Cannon hosting his hugely successful TV show, America's Got Talent, before I fell asleep.

Tuesday - New York
My friend Jasmine was saying with me as she was filming a fly-on-the-wall special for T4, so she got up early to make us breakfast - she makes good scrambled eggs on toast.

We left soon afterwards, to the set of a commercial shoot for an American phone company. My puppies are starring in this ad with me, too. I had my team with me but the pups had a mini entourage of their own, of course! And why wouldn't they?

It was a big shoot and even my entourage had an entourage - my stylist had an assistant, my security had extra security.

The look I went for was a Gucci top with Gucci boots that aren't even out in stores yet. One of my friends said I looked like a glamazon woman from Vogue. I informed her that if that were the case, I'd be a size minus-something, but I thanked her for the compliment anyway.

The funniest thing was that the huge muscleman actor they had playing my security guard had trouble controlling my 5lb puppy, who was wriggling madly to escape his big hands. I'm convinced my puppy trainer has taught my dogs to obey only male voices, as he and Nick can control them beautifully but with me they're bad, bad doggies.

The shoot was based on the fact that some people think I'm a demanding diva. I have no idea why people have that impression!

That night I had an interview with a journalist from a British newspaper, who I'd agreed to meet at 10:30pm at a restaurant in my neighborhood. As the restaurant is only three blocks up the street, I decided I would walk, so popped on my comfiest platform skyscraper heels and off we went.

The interview finished just in time for me to sit down to a quick midnight dinner with my girlfriends before taking another press call from NRJ Radio in France. My day never stops!

Wednesday and Thursday - New York
I was ending my week with a big performance, so Wednesday and Thursday were vocal rest days. My manager told me that rain was predicted on Friday, when I was meant to be performing for Oprah, live from Central Park. We all laughed and said with Oprah's connections we're sure she can make a call and have that weather fixed! I tried to lie in bed relaxing all day but had a couple of things on my to-do list - walking my puppies on my rooftop and taking a dip in my rooftop hot tub.

Since I live downtown, on the other side of the city to Central Park, and traffic the next morning would've been bleak, we packed an overnight bag or 12 and stayed at the Plaza Hotel. I love it there, but it was still very hard to fall asleep. Usually I watch a movie to try to nod off, but the hotel was featuring Bruno and it had the opposite effect.

Friday - New York
Waking up was beyond bleak. I actually drank coffee, which I never do. But once I got to the stage and felt Oprah's and the crowd's energy, I really woke up. My family were there and Nick had even jumped on a ridiculously early flight from California to join me on stage.

I felt pretty good out there. I sang my current single, I Want To Know What Love Is, and as I spotted Oprah watching from the front row I hoped I'd done a good job.

Nick had to go back to California at 5am the next morning, but he left me two really sweet notes so I felt better waking up alone (woe is me!). He'll be back tonight so I'm being a little dramatic - but then again, aren't I always?'

'Precious' Makes a 'Surreal' Premiere in Hollywood, <a href="%E2%80%9Dhttp://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/WireStory?id=8973615&page=2%E2%80%9D" target=""_blank"">The Associated Press

The cast and crew of "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by
Sapphire" continued their unexpected journey from a scrappy little
screening 10 months ago at the Sundance Film Festival to a star-studded gala at
the legendary Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

"I'm speechless," said director Lee Daniels at an event hosted by the
American Film Institute on Sunday. "I'm humbled and speechless. That's the
best way to describe it. I just can't... I wish I had the words. Dreamlike?
Sort of surreal."

The dark urban drama, which opens in U.S. cinemas on Friday, follows
Clareece "Precious" Jones, an overweight, illiterate and abused
Harlem teen who is pregnant with her second child and invited to enroll in an
alternative school in hopes that her life will head in a new direction.

While at Sundance, where the -million film took top honors, Daniels got a
call from Oprah Winfrey, who ultimately joined fellow entertainment mogul Tyler
Perry in serving as after-the-fact executive producers.

Shortly thereafter, Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe, who marks her film
debut in the title role, had an audience with Winfrey.

"Unfortunately, I forgot everything about it," Sidibe recalled.
"It's so weird, because she's such a big deal to me, that when she speaks,
I don't hear anything. It's like it's so weird. It's like hysterical blindness
in a way. All I can remember is her saying my name over and over, and that
can't be right."

"Precious" has earned strong critical notices for two unlikely
recipients: Mariah Carey and Mo'Nique.

Mo'Nique, the stand-up comic, talk-show diva and comic-actor, plays
Clareece's monstrous, abusive mother. "I got a phone call from Mr.
Daniels, and he said, 'I've got something that might mess up your career.' I
said, 'Sign me up,'" she said.

Carey has a role as social worker -- a small part, but one the music
superstar views as a milestone in her acting career. "I mean I had one
milestone that almost had me under the stone," she laughed, referring to
the 2001 bomb "Glitter."

"I didn't realize that you really have to be selective with the people
that you work with and you have to have that support system and you have to
work with people that you feel are geniuses and Lee Daniels is a genius in my
book, so I'm grateful."

Other gala attendees Sunday included Winfrey and Perry, who posed for
photographers but didn't speak to press. Also present were novelist Sapphire,
"Precious" costars Paula Patton (with musician husband Robin Thicke)
and Sherri Shepherd, as well as Carey's musician husband Nick Cannon and Mary
J. Blige, who co-wrote one of the film's original songs. Like the film, it's an
Oscar shoo-in, according to some key award-season pundits -- all of whom
director Daniels is trying to ignore.

"My way of dealing with (Oscar buzz) is not to embrace it," he
explained. "I did the movie after I thought it was (only) going to DVD.
Now I'm here on the freakin' red carpet talking to ya'll and it's like, that,
that is the win. Oprah Winfrey is like behind the movie. I mean, come on. I'm
gonna be able to tell my kids that forever."

 By Alex Canfor-Dumas for Mirror.co.uk

It's 8.30pm on a humid autumn evening in New York and the traffic's ground to a halt. The gridlock is worse than usual - apparently President Obama is in town.

So it's ironic, but I think I'm going to be late for my interview with Mariah Carey, a woman who has a reputation for being rather late herself.

Yes, Mariah is known as the Head Girl of prima donnas - and then some. Even now, as I sit impatiently in my yellow cab, Mariah Carey could be making outrageous demands: the cushions should match her nail varnish; the temperature of her iced tea should be monitored. And what's that, glinting on the table? It's a goldfish, wearing a lilac tiara, just like the singer's own.
That's the sort of thing I'm expecting. I'd read the stories, but could they really be true?
'What say you we speed things up?' the cab driver suggests, springing into action with a sharp right turn. I lurch across the seat, but it looks like I'm not going to be late after all. I'll arrive with a bruised shoulder - but I'll be on time.

And so is Mariah Carey. That's my first surprise. In fact, she's been at the hotel most of the day giving interviews to promote her sultry new album, Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel.
The second surprise is how relaxed everyone around her appears to be. There's none of the edgy nervousness that vibrates around a room when a difficult star is present - everyone seems calm and good-humoured. I'm informed Mariah will be available in five minutes, as she needs to record a TV message for a programme celebrating her friend Simon Cowell's birthday.
On cue, the door opens, and Mariah Carey gallops into the room. Tall as a supermodel (5ft 9) she's all legs and hair, with the latter cascading in tawny curls over her shoulders. Dressed in black, she looks like she's been poured into her tight trousers, and her shirt is unbuttoned just enough to reveal a substantial cleavage and an elegant necklace that spells out 'Angel'. The look is simple, but effortlessly glamorous.

Reclining on a sofa, the singer waits patiently for her make-up to be retouched, then, looking into the camera, she starts to sing Happy Birthday to Simon. [The video was shown at his birthday last month.] She stops abruptly. 'I can't sing!' she exclaims. 'I've been talking for 50 hours today and my voice won't be good enough for Simon!' Suddenly she's more like a nervous X Factor wannabe than what she really is: the biggest-selling female artist of all time (200 million records worldwide and counting) and - let's not forget - the possessor of an extraordinary vocal range. Even so, Mariah decides to speak to camera instead, in her seductive Long Island drawl. If that doesn't make the music mogul sit up, nothing will.

Later, when everyone's left the room, I speak to Mariah, 39, alone. There's no agitated publicist sitting in the corner censoring every question. It's just me and Mariah, who has her legs curled up under a rug. 'I hope you don't mind, but this is cosier,' explains the singer.
Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel is her twelfth studio album, and it has the sexy, loved-up feel of a woman fulfilled. Its themes are love, at all its stages. Eighteen months into a happy second marriage, was it healing for Mariah to look back at her own journey of the heart? 'Yes, because I was able to build humour into some of the lyrics,' she discloses, 'and that helped. I've spent so much of my life feeling like I had to be a "good girl" when it came to guys. I had to be careful who I got involved with in case they bragged, but when you finally find the right person, you don't feel angry you went through some unhappy experiences. It all suddenly makes sense.'
The 'right person' in this case is actor, rapper, TV host, millionaire and current presenter of America's Got Talent, Nick Cannon. They announced their marriage after a whirlwind, two-month courtship in April last year. One track on her album, The Impossible, is dedicated to Nick. 'You rescued my love/You did the impossible/See, I had almost given up,' she sings. So what makes him different from all the other guys? 'He's giving and loving,' she smiles. 'He's also witty and fun. We have a good time together, like big kids. I adore him. He's a special person in every way. It can be a little tough, having a relationship when you're under such public scrutiny. But I like it better than being alone.' And the sexiest thing about him? Mariah hesitates, looking politely shocked. 'That's sort of private,' she says coyly, glancing down. 'OK, he's great-looking with a good six-pack.'

Mariah's in pretty good shape herself. What's her secret? 'I have to be careful with my diet,' she admits. 'Fortunately I'm quite muscular, so I can lose fat quickly when I try. At the moment I'm on this bleak pak choi diet. Ugh! I can hardly stand it, but I'm trying to lose a few pounds.' I try and work out from where these few pounds need removing. Her ankles, perhaps?

Diet aside, Mariah Carey seems happy. Fulfilled in her personal life and with a stellar 20-year music career to look back on, she's now also experiencing an about-turn in her acting ambitions. In her most recent film, Precious, she is almost unrecognisable in the small, but hard-hitting part of a social worker. The role earned her a 15-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival this spring, and there's even speculation she could grab the Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She's come a long way since being panned for her 2001 performance in the film Glitter, so it must be quite satisfying.

'Well I've been doing independent films people don't know about and learning my trade that way,' she reveals. 'Someone told me Helen Mirren had been offered the role of the social worker, but had to pull out. So it was daunting to try and fill the shoes of this great Academy Award-winning actress. But then I decided to snap myself out of that mind-set and figure out what I could bring to the role.'
Almost as daunting for Mariah - a woman whose name is synonymous with glamour - was the make-under she had for the part. It left her unrecognisable, even to friends. 'It was hideous!' she screams, in mock horror. 'I had dark circles added under my eyes, a moustache. The hair was disgusting, the clothes horrible. But I'm willing to do anything for a role, to make it authentic. I'm proud of that part, and I want to do more films - especially independent ones. I'd love to work with Woody Allen.'

Mariah is glad, too, that she is at last receiving recognition for her song-writing and producing skills, even though she's been doing both since her teens. She co-wrote and co-produced all the songs (bar one) on her latest album. In fact it was Simon Cowell, who pointed out to last year's X Factor audience that Mariah's song-writing abilities were rarely given due credit.
'That was very nice of Simon,' concedes the star, who was mentoring the contestants during Mariah Carey Week. 'The problem is, unless you're behind a piano or a guitar, you're looked on as a diva.'

Ah, the 'd' word. 'Diva' has practically become Mariah Carey's middle name. But what's behind this reputation, and how does she feel about it? Philosophical, it would seem. 'At its heart, I think it's lazy journalism,' she offers. 'I was on the first Divas Live show (in the States) and that seemed to kick the whole thing off. You know, my mother - who was an opera singer - used to use the term as a compliment; it meant a very talented singer. But I looked it up in the dictionary recently and now it also means a difficult and demanding woman. I guess people like to put you in a little box, and that box fits me because I have the big hair, and I wear the tight dresses on stage. But that doesn't mean I'm difficult or nasty,' she says earnestly. 'I remember a story in the British press, saying I'd demanded rose petals be scattered on the carpet of a London hotel when I arrived. The truth is, we'd just landed, it was 3am and all I wanted to do was go straight to my room. The back entrance would have been fine, never mind rose petals! I'd never ask for anything like that. But that sort of stuff is written about me, so I've just learnt to shake it off.'
In fact, Mariah still has the same friends since her school days, and a management team who've lasted 15 years. Hardly the track record of a diva. 'I think one of the most down-to-earth things about me is that I value my friendships,' she says simply. 'My friends know MC keeps her word. I'm very loyal and never divulge their secrets.'

Then my time's up. 'It was nice to meet you,' says the singer, uncurling herself and hugging me warmly. Diva? All I found was a sweet woman. And her voice isn't bad, either...
