Investmentwende Summit

Investmentwende Summit

The Investors Dialogue with the Club of Rome is a yearly, by invitation only investors event that is held under the leadership of international Club of Rome members and the AQAL Group, a multi-family office. The Club of Rome is a global think tank of former heads of state, high-level politicians and government officials, diplomats, scientists, economists, investors and business leaders. This year’s Summit takes place under the patronage of the Free State of Bavaria, the City of Munich, and in cooperation with Phineo gAG and TONIIC, a global action community for impact investors that aims to create a global financial ecosystem, which operates to create positive social and environmental impact.

The Investmentwende Summit 2017 represents the investors’ answer to the latest forthcoming Report to the Club of Rome entitled "Come On! Capitalism, Short-termism, Population and the Destruction of the Planet” by Ernst von Weizsaecker, Anders Wijkman, Mariana Bozesan et al. Together with the Guetersloher Verlagshaus, we will be launching the German version of this report entitled “Wir sind dran. Was wir aendern muessen, wenn wir bleiben wollen.” This report has the intention to provide guidance, solutions, encouragement, and hope in a world gone slightly wild. It offers an optimistic outlook onto the future by providing extraordinary opportunities, practical policies, and beneficial solutions for a a better and more sustainable world. It presents a hand-on guidance on how to move the global civilization into a new direction by simultaneously creating a new live based on a more enlightened philosophy.

Our Credo

We believe we are all looking into a bright and exciting future because we are willing to grow and reinvent ourselves every single day. In this future, a new paradigm in investing, economics, and business is crucial to our survival on this planet. Finance and business are, next to politics, the driving forces of the world economy. Therefore, we are actively participating in the investing world in a conscious manner and feel not only the need to challenge the way investing is currently being performed, but have the responsibility to make it integrally sustainable. In this investment style, high financial returns are inseparable from a high positive impact on the Environment, Social responsibility, ethical corporate Governance (ESG), as well as culture and happiness. We are committed to contribute our share toward the implementation of the Paris Agreement COP21 and the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

The De' Medici of Today

The De’ Medici of Today are paving the way toward integral sustainability across all asset classes. Today’s investors have a world-centric view of the world that enables them to use their wealth to self-actualize and find their true life’s purpose by serving humanity through their investments. Like Lorenzo Di Medici who sparked the Italian Renaissance Enlightenment, today’s enlightened investors are leading the field of investing by implementing the parity between people, planet, profit, with passion and purpose rather than preferring one aspect at the expense of the others. These investors view themselves as the co-creators of the next paradigm in investing; a paradigm rooted in the essence of all existence, the interior such as culture, values, and morals as well as exterior reality. It is a reality in which high financial returns are inseparable from a high environmental, social, cultural, and an ethical impact, as well as individual self-actualization, joy, and happiness.

Launching the Investmentwende and its first Manifesto

Launching the Investmentwende and its first Manifesto

Just like the De’ Medici family fostered and inspired the birth of the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century, we believe we have the responsibility to unleash the next stage of human cultural evolution by turning today’s challenges into an opportunity. At this summit we will unleash the Investmentwende (the investment turnaround), share our experiences, inspire each other, and find leading edge answers to burning questions. We will have the opportunity to invest in some of the most progressive yet risk-mitigated solutions to ensure our common future on our beautiful blue planet. We will contribute to integral sustainability solutions that allow businesses to gain competitive advantage, to create more value, and to generate sustainable growth and jobs in societies around the world. Most importantly, we will participate in the advancement of the essential engine that helps achieve the ambitious COP21 and the UN Agenda 2030 with its Sustainable Development Goals. Through that, we will be able to leave our mark and influence the actionable Manifesto for Integral Sustainability in Investing, which will be the legacy of this investors’ summit.

The 193 SDG signatories and heads of state have given investors an enormous opportunity and a wonderful responsibility. Through this manifesto, we lead the way, call for action, and invite awakened investors and leading organizations to pave the way toward the implementation of the UN SDGs in investing, finance, and economics. To achieve these goals, we ask and respond to the following questions prompted by the 17 UN SDGs:

  1. How can we, as investors, end poverty in all its forms, everywhere?
  2. How can investors contribute to ending hunger and encourage the transition to sustainable agriculture?
  3. How can investors help ensure healthy lives and well-being for all age groups?
  4. How can investors support quality education and lifelong learning?
  5. How can investors advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls?
  6. How can investors help ensure the sustainable management of water and universal access to sanitation?
  7. How can investors contribute to a sustainable energy transition?
  8. How can investors promote decent work for all?
  9. How can investors advance sustainable industrialization and innovation, especially in those places that do not have access to modern industry?
  10. How can investors help to reduce inequality within and among countries?
  11. How can investors transform production and consumption patterns, to make them more sustainable?
  12. How can investors make our cities more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable?
  13. How can investors be part of the urgent action that is needed to combat climate change and its impacts?
  14. How can investors be part of caring for our oceans and seas?
  15. How can investors help to protect and restore ecosystems and preserve biodiversity?

During the Investmentwende Summit, we will be addressing also the following topics and questions:

  1. How to Increase the Supply of Capital toward Integrally Sustainable Development? Attract significant capital by providing policies, investment rules, incentives, as well as requirements that offer co-investments, share the investment risk with the government, and mandate or prioritize integral impact investments. The intention should be geared toward adding explicit measurement criteria for People and the Planet to the current profit-only measurements across all asset classes.
  2. How to Channel Capital toward Integrally Sustainable Development? Develop policies that alter current investment behavior by providing tax incentives, subsidies, reporting requirements, and intermediation for directing capital toward the implementation of COP21 and UN SDGs. Adjust terms of trade, market norms, ratings, and prices according to sustainable economic rules that honor multiple bottom line criteria.
  3. How to Increase Capacity Building toward Integral Sustainability?
  4. How to Increase Capital Absorption Capacity toward Integral Sustainability? Sharing projects and investment deals is key to the overall success

Through world-renowned cultural legacies such as the Walhalla Temple, the Bavaria statue, and the New and the Old Pinakothek, King Ludwig I shaped Munich like no other monarch before him. His progressive ideas, love for science and devotion to beauty laid the foundation of modern Munich as one of the most popular and beautiful cities in the world. He also devised architect Friedrich von Gärtner to design a first class hotel for state guests at the Promenadeplatz. Hence, in 1841 the Bayerischer Hof was inaugurated and served as the number one hotel in Munich ever since hosting remarkable guests such as Richard Wagner, Sigmund Freud, Enrico Caruso, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Kirk Douglas, Michael Jackson, and other royal and political figures.

Since the 1960s, the Bayerischer Hof has also served as the host of the International Munich Security Conference that has become the world’s largest global forum for security policy decision-makers.

The Bayerischer Hof is, however, much more than only the noble backdrop of global events with famous guests. Its spirit has become a synonym for debating audacious ideas, for unleashing innovation and creativity, and for influencing the future of humanity. This spirit makes this historical landmark the perfect location for the Investmentwende Summit 2017.
