A quick way to perform movie-making calculations.

One of my hobbies is photography and I dabble occasionally with time-lapse. In time-lapse photography, you set up a camera on a tripod to take a photo at a set interval, like every 15 seconds, over a long period of time, like hours. When you’re finished, you take the resulting images and compile them into a movie using each photo as a movie frame. The length of your movie is dependent on the number of shots and the number of frames per second (fps) at which they are compiled.

I wanted to be able to easily calculate various values for a time-lapse movie project based on certain values I provide, which I call “assumptions.” For example, how many seconds between shots if I want 1200 shots over 3-1/2 hours? How long would a movie be if I took shots over 10 hours with 15 seconds between shots and compiled them at 30 fps?

This is basic math, but with a twist. I wanted to be able to solve for any one of three source photo values given the other two values:

Time period, in hours

Seconds between shots

Number of shots

Given that information, I also wanted to be able to solve for either of two resulting movie values:

Frames per second

Movie length, in seconds

The resulting Time-Lapse Calculator shown here does the job.

The formulas I put in the green cells are shown below. The IF function tests to see if cells are empty and uses the test result to determine whether it needs to perform and display a calculation. For example, in cell D6, it checks to see if B6 is empty; if it is, it calculates the result based on B7 and B8. Because the last two formulas require data from either cell B8 or D8, they also test to see which one contains data. The result is a nestled IF statement.

D6=IF(B6="",B8*B7/60/60,"")
D7=IF(B7="",60/(B8/B6/60),"")
D8=IF(B8="",B6*60*60/B7,"")

D11=IF(B11="",IF(B8<>"",B8,D8)/B12,"")
D12=IF(B12="",IF(B8<>"",B8,D8)/B11,"")

You can download a password-protected copy of the worksheet here. (The password is not available for distribution.)

After completing this worksheet and beginning to write about it, I realized that it’s not everything I envisioned. What I really wanted was to calculate one of the following based on the other three:

Time period, in hours

Seconds between shots

Frames per second

Movie length, in seconds

I’ll likely work on this in the future. If I finish it, it’ll appear here on Maria’s Guides.

This should make Facebook a little more bearable for people who use it for business.

I just got back on Facebook. It was a tough decision. What helped make it tolerable to go back to Facebook was my discovery that I could hide posts related to Farmville, Mafia Wars, and other time-sucking games I really couldn’t care less about.

It’s easy:

In your News Feed window, when you see a post about a game you don’t care about, point to it. A Hide button appears.

Click Hide.

The item disappears and is replaced with a series of buttons like the ones shown here. Click the button to hide the game.

A note like the one shown here appears. Ignore it and it will go away.

From that point on, you won’t get any posts related to that game.

Sure, it’s easy to retweet someone else’s tweet. But are you overdoing it?

I’ve been on twitter for more than three years now and have sent more than 22,000 tweets into the Twitterverse. These are a mix of the usual inane comments, bits of wisdom, meal reports, witty remarks (or my attempts at witty remarks), links to interesting content, and retweets of other people’s tweets.

It’s the retweeting habit of Twitter users that I want to address here.

A retweet, in case you’re not familiar with the term, is a tweet that someone else wrote that is echoed to the Twitterverse. Retweets come in two flavors:

Old-style retweets include the letters RT or via followed by the originator’s Twitter name. For example:

or

Official Twitter retweets appear to come from the originator, but they were retweeted by someone you follow. Thus, they wind up in your timeline from the account of the originator, even if you don’t follow that person. Here’s an example:

I could go into a lecture on which method is better (official retweet, in case you’re wondering), but I’ll save that for another post. Right now, I’m more concerned with how much people retweet and what they are retweeting.

This is where I get into some hot water with some Twitter friends. You see, what prompted this post was the complete retweet abuse I’m seeing on Twitter among a handful of people I follow. I don’t mean to point fingers, so I won’t mention any Twitter names. But if you’re one of the people repeatedly committing one of the following abuses, you know who you are.

Retweeting more than you tweet. If you consistently retweet other people’s content more than you create your own original tweets, take a moment to consider why you are on Twitter. Is it your purpose to simply echo the words and links of the people you follow? There are Twitter bots that can do that automatically and they’re only slightly more annoying. Why should anyone follow you if nearly everything you tweet has its source elsewhere? (And if the rest of your tweets are from Foursquare, do yourself a favor and just drop out of Twitter now, before someone has to kill you.)

Retweeting content that just isn’t interesting to the majority of your followers — or many people on the planet. You may think the latest Latin language release of the Open Source project, thingamabobwhatchamacallit widget plugin, is the most fascinating thing on the planet. But do you really think your followers agree? And if they did, don’t you think they’d be actively following the same sources of information about that project that you are? Retweeting stuff that few people care about only raises the noise to signal ratio on Twitter. And who likes noise? A corollary to this is retweeting local area content when you have only a few local followers. Your 724 non-local followers don’t really care that the corner antique clothing store is having a big sale on Tuesday. Or that your next door neighbor’s cat has gone missing. Or that there’s a fire/flood/tornado/locust warning for your county. If we wanted local area information on Twitter, we’d follow the same kinds of local information sources you follow — but for our areas.

Retweeting other people’s references to your Twitter account. Okay, so @yourbiggestfan tickled your fancy by tweeting about how much he liked your latest book/blog post/tweet/haircut. Do you know how dorky and self-centered you look by retweeting his gushy tweet? Isn’t Twitter narcissistic enough by giving you an opportunity to brag about yourself? Do you really think it’s necessary to retweet the nice things other people say about you, too? Ick.

Retweeting the tweets and retweets of others in a special interest group where everyone follows everyone else. This is especially annoying when you use the old fashioned RT or via method of retweeting. It means that everyone who follows everyone else has to read the same tweet six or seven times. Consider the world of Ninja Yoga Masters, which may only have 20 outspoken master members sharing the same few hundred followers. When each of the masters retweets a fellow master’s comment with an old-fashioned RT, we all have to read that comment again. And again. And again. Do you know how annoying that is? Especially when the retweets appear one after the other in our timelines? It’s like the retweeting crew is singing a chorus.

Retweeting improperly. Someone came up with some words of wisdom or a good one-liner or a link good enough for you to retweet. But instead of doing it properly by using the official Twitter retweet tool (which is now supported by just about all Twitter client software), you paraphrase to shorten or maybe leave out the source. Not very nice, is that? There’s no reason to incorrectly retweet someone else’s tweet. Click the damn Retweet link or button; Twitter does the rest for you, leaving the original in all its glory and properly crediting the source. This helps other people find and possibly follow that source if they find the retweeted content is interesting.

Now I’m not saying that my tweets are perfect. They’re not. There are too many of them to all be good. Indeed, I’ve committed all of these abuses at least once in the past 3+ years. But the growth of Twitter has made abuse like this unacceptable. It’s causing people like me to limit who they follow and to drop Twitter friends because of their annoying retweeting behavior.

What do you think about the retweeting situation on Twitter? Do you have any pet peeves I neglected to include in my list? Don’t be shy! Share them with us. Use the Comments link or form for this post to let us know.

And do me a favor: retweet this post to spread the word. Twitter would be a much better place without so many retweets.

Yes, you read that right.

I use Firefox. I think it’s the best browser around — mostly because of its wide support for plugins and its frequent updates.

But I also have an iPad. And iPad includes and supports the Apple Safari Web browser.

One of my first challenges was to get my Firefox bookmarks into my iPad’s Safari browser — and to keep them synced. Here’s what I did.

Step 1: Set Up Firefox Bookmark Synchronization

I use two computers regularly (an iMac on my desktop and a 13″ MacBook Pro) and occasionally use two others (a 15″ MacBook Pro and a Dell Laptop). It was natural to want my bookmarks synchronized between these computers. So years ago, I began using a Firefox plugin that handled synchronization for me. That plugin has evolved over time and is currently called Xmarks Bookmark and Password Sync.

Xmarks works with a free account on the Xmarks.com Web site. (If you are a more experienced user and have your own server, you can sync to your own server instead.) You set up an account on Xmarks.com, install the plugin in Firefox on all your computers, and configure the plugin to point to your Xmarks.com account. You then synchronize. The first synchronization gives you options to overwrite or merge booksmarks; do whatever you think is right for your situation. From that point forward, Xmarks will automatically synchronize bookmarks when you open and quit Firefox.

Although I’ve been doing this for years now, this became my first step to syncing my bookmarks with Safari on my iPad. If you don’t already use Xmarks, set it up as your first step.

One note here: Xmarks has other synchronization features. For example, as the name implies, it also synchronizes passwords. You can use this feature, too, if you like. And it displays search results with ratings and other features. Explore this on your own.

Step 2: Set Up Safari Bookmark Synchronization

The next step is to get your Firefox bookmarks on Safari. You can do this with Xmarks for Mac OS X 10.6.

Download the installer, run it, and follow the instructions in the Installation Wizard to set it up on your computer. Be sure to point it to the same Xmarks account you use for Firefox. When you perform that first sync, tell it whether you want to merge or overwrite bookmarks. When the sync is complete, your Safari bookmarks should match your Firefox bookmarks.

One thing to keep in mind here: if you have multiple Macs and use a MobileMe account to synchronize various Mac OS items — including Safari Bookmarks — you don’t need to install Xmarks for Mac OS X 10.6 on all of your computers. Just install on one and let MobileMe do the rest of the synchronization for you.

Step 3: Set Up iPad Bookmark Synchronization

At this point, it should be pretty easy to figure out how to synchronize your Mac’s Safari bookmarks with your iPad’s Safari bookmarks. There are actually two ways to do this:

If you have a MobileMe account:

Make sure Bookmarks synchronization is turned on on your Mac in the MobileMe preferences pane (see previous screenshot) and sync.

Make sure your MobileMe account has been set up on your iPad.

On your iPad, tap Settings and then tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars. This should take you to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars screen.

Tap the e-mail address for your MobileMe account. This will display its options, shown here.

Tap to turn on the Bookmarks option.

Tap Done.

Bookmarks will now be synced through MobileMe.

If you don’t have a MobileMe account:

Use your USB cable to connect your iPad to the computer you use to synchronize data and install music and apps. Ideally, this computer should have Foxmarks for Mac OS X 10.6 installed on it.

On your Mac, open iTunes (if it has not opened automatically) and select your iPad in the Source list under Devices.

Click the Info tab near the top of the iTunes window.

Scroll down to the Other section.

Turn on the check box labeled Sync Safari Bookmarks. (This check box only appears if you are not using MobileMe to sync bookmarks.)

Click Sync. If prompted to merge or overwrite bookmarks, choose the appropriate option for your situation.

Bookmarks will now be synced through iTunes.

Works for Me

This is my solution. Is it the only one? Probably not. If you have a different (or even better!) solution, don’t hesitate to share it with us in Comments on this post.

What I just submitted to the App store.

It is what it is…and nothing more.

I think the majority of people giving this app very low ratings are not realizing what Numbers (and other iWork apps, for that matter) is: a mobile application. Given the limitations of the hardware and interface, it simply cannot be a stand-alone solution for all of a person’s spreadsheet needs.

That said, Numbers has a few serious shortcomings. The inability to read/write Excel files is certainly one of them. If you need this feature, you should not buy this version of Numbers. (Wait until that feature is added, if it ever is, and stop giving low ratings just because it’s not here yet.) The inability to exclude certain worksheets from PDFs is another. There are also limitations on formatting, etc.

But what is Numbers supposed to be? I think it’s a way to use existing worksheets on your iPad. To that end, I’ve taken an extremely complex 3-tabbed worksheet with references between all three sheets and a pair of charts and successfully brought it from Excel to Numbers on my Mac to Numbers on my iPad. This worksheet, which calculates weight and balance for a helicopter load, is instrumental to my charter business needs. With Numbers for iPad, I don’t need to have my laptop with me or spend a lot of time with a calculator. I can perform these calculations in minutes on my iPad — and even send the final worksheets and charts to my base of operations for reference and filing.

But if you expect Numbers to meet all your spreadsheet application needs, your expectations are far too high. Sure, it’s good for the simple stuff. And yes, it can help you present and modify existing Numbers worksheets when you’re on the go. But you’ll be sorely disappointed if you expect to quickly and easily create professional-looking spreadsheet documents with this app on your iPad. I don’t think that’s a reasonable expectation at all.

It’s easier than you might think.

As you work with your Mac, installing and using software, it creates a bunch of configuration files that it stores in various places throughout your computer. Most of these files can be found in the various Library folders, tucked inside their own folders. There are hundreds of these files and every time you install and use some software — even trial software that you later delete — these files are created and hidden away in your system.

These unused files bit me this week when, for some reason, my BlackBerrry refused to sync with iCal and Address Book. The week before, I’d downgraded from Mac OS X 10.6.3 to 10.6.2. (Long story why; I don’t recommend doing this.) To make another long story short, it turns out that the BlackBerry Desktop software had lost track of some of its components. Making the matter worse was that I’d used both the Missing Sync and Pocket Mac in the past and their configuration files and extensions were still lurking about in my system, causing BlackBerry Desktop to choke.

While you can use an application like AppZapper (which I recommend) to uninstall software you no longer use, I’ve discovered that even uninstallers leave files behind. The best way to make sure a software program is completely gone is to search for and manually delete any remaining configuration files.

The trouble is, when you use the Finder’s search box to search for a file, it automatically excludes system files. This is actually a good thing for two reasons (that I can think of):

It minimizes search results to match what you’re most likely trying to find (which isn’t usually system files).

It prevents novice users from stumbling upon and possibly deleting or modifying system files that are better left alone.

So what do you do? Easy. You tell Mac OS to search the library folder where you expect to find the files.

Here’s an example. I use the program Fission by Rogue Amoeba to edit audio files. I like it; it’s good. But suppose I decided I wanted to stop using it and remove every trace of it from my computer.

I could search my hard disk for files named Fission. The results might look like this:

But is that all there is? I don’t think so. I’ll open the Library folder in my Home folder and do the same search, but with the Library folder selected. Here are the results:

See the difference? The second search displayed two configuration files and a folder likely containing more related data. (The fourth file in the list is a data file for Yojimbo which I’d likely not want to remove.)

If I were serious about removing all traces of this program from my computer, I’d search not only by the name of the program but all or part of the name of the developer. (Rogue Amoeba is a great example because either word is likely to find just files related to software by that developer.)

You might want to repeat this process for all Library folders — the one on your hard disk’s root directory, the one in the System folder on your hard disk, and the one in any user’s Home folder (if you have access to it).

Performing this exercise for Missing Sync and Pocket Mac files this morning uncovered literally dozens of configuration files scattered all over my hard disk. Deleting them freed up space and prevented the possibility of these files interfering with incompatible software that I currently use.

Having a problem? This might help.

After updating my Mac to Mac OS 10.6.3, I found that I could not successfully open Photoshop CS3. Although the program would go through what seemed like the entire startup process, it would unexpectedly quit right before it opened a document. There was nothing I could do to prevent this.

Needless to say, I was not a happy camper.

I started troubleshooting with a Google Search. Two pages were particularly helpful:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2382232&tstart=0 This thread on the Apple discussions forum contains 167 answers (so far) to the problem experienced by a user. As with most forums, the posts go off-topic to suggest Photoshop alternatives and attempt to place blame on either Apple or Adobe. If you have the time and patience to wade through the posts, however, you’ll discover several potential fixes.

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/834/cpsid_83499.html This TechNote on Adobe.com gets to the meat of the matter without having to wade through a bunch of off-topic nonsense.

Apparently, the problem concerns all Adobe CS3 products and possibly some other software. It did not affect my copy of InDesign CS4.

Adobe provides three possible solutions. I’ll present them here in the order I think you should tackle them.

Disable Opening with Rosetta

Adobe suggests that you turn off the “Open Using Rosetta” check box in the Info window for Photoshop CS3 (or any other program that might be experiencing the problem. In the Finder, select the application’s icon. Then choose File > Get Info or press Command-I. In the General area of the Info window, turn off the check box labeled Open using Rosetta. Close the Info window. This was not the source of my problem, so I can’t verify whether this will help.

Obtain a New Serial Number

Adobe claims that the problem might have something to do with an invalid serial number registered for the computer. This is most likely to happen if your computer was serviced by Apple, perhaps to replace the logic board or some other major component. Per Adobe:

When launching Adobe CS3 applications on Apple’s Mac OS 10.6.3, the applications crash, or quit unexpectedly. This only occurs on systems where the system serial number is a value with more than 12 characters. This appears to only be the case when the system serial number doesn’t have a valid number, but instead has a value such as “System Serial#”, or “SystemSerialNumb”.

How do you find the serial number registered by your computer? The easiest way is to choose Apple > About This Mac to display the About this Mac window for your computer. Click the Version number info right under where it says Mac OS X twice. The Version number will change to the Build number and then to your serial number as it is registered inside the computer.

When I originally read this and checked it against my serial number, I did not think this was my problem. After all, Adobe says it happens with serial numbers “more than 12 characters” in length. Mine was <del>11</del> <ins>10</ins>. And that was my problem. When I had my logic board replaced about a year and a half ago, the Apple genius entered an invalid serial number for the new logic board. He basically left out one character. Something in the Mac OS X 10.6.3 update triggered a serial number validation routine in CS3 products. When it came up with an invalid serial number, it refused to run Photoshop CS3.

The solution is not one you’ll like if you don’t have an Apple store nearby. This morning, I’ll be driving 50 miles to get the correct serial number entered into my Mac by a “genius.”

Revert to Mac OS X 10.6.2 or Earlier

Adobe suggests this as the first alternative. Downgrading operating system software is never something I recommend as a first option. After all, eventually you’ll have to upgrade again. Why not try to fix the problem if you can?

But if you can’t fix the problem any other way, downgrading to Mac OS X 10.6.2 might be the way to go. You can find instructions for downgrading at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2597.

Are You Having This Problem?

If you’re having this problem, I’d like to hear from you. What software was affected? How did you resolve the problem? Add your comment to this post.

Please limit your comments to this topic. Rants against Apple or Adobe or suggestions on what software is better than Photoshop will not be approved.
