Ausente por un año - Absent for a year

Hace un poco más de 365 días que no posteo nada nuevo en el blog y hoy les traigo la explicación. El 2014 fue un año de darme cuento de lo que estaba sucediendo, seguía trabajando como freelancer tratando de mantener antiguos clientes en Guatemala, la razón? mis ilustraciones tienen una clara tendencia y es la de representar a los niños indígenas en Guatemala. Sin embargo no pude seguir trabajando de esa forma el tener un ingreso en quetzales (moneda de Guatemala) no me permitió tener un ingreso rentable en los Estados Unidos.

Después de analizada la situación me costó tener que aceptar que debería cambiar la estrategia, pensé en dibujar algo más genérico pero siempre llegue a la conclusión que mi pasión no es dibujar otra cosa que no sea niñas y niños indígenas.

Ahora me encuentro con un trabajo fijo y gracias a Dios tengo la oportunidad de tener la ilustración como el más bello pasatiempo, ya no tengo que estresarme por fechas de entrega inhumanas, por tener que esperar fechas de pago demoradas por trámites burocráticos ahora solo me queda el disfrutar de mis pinceles a mi manera.

Es por eso que verán ilustraciones con técnicas más libres ya que no tengo que adaptarme a ningún requisito solicitado.

Llegue a entender que no tiene nada de malo tener un empleo de oficina, ya que gracias a ese empleo puedo gozar de más libertad en lo que más me gusta hacer…ilustrar.

Gracias a todos los que a pesar de ver el silencio que reinaba siguen por aquí siguiendo el blog o la pagina de Facebook, sentí inseguridad al tener que compartirles lo que sucedió pero ya era tiempo de decirlo.

I haven’t post anything over a year now and today I’m sharing why. The year 2014 was a year of having to open my eyes to what was happening, I was still working as a freelancer keeping Guatemalan clients, the reason? My illustration has a clear concept of representing indigenous girls and boys from Guatemala. Never the less I couldn’t keep up with that arrangement having an income in Quetzales (Guatemalan currency) and having a cost of living in Dollars is a no-no formula.

After thinking and thinking ways of how I can make it work I thought, what if I drew more generic themes, but I always ended up thinking that my passion relies on representing my people…Guatemalans.

Long story short, now I have a steady income working a full time job which gives me the opportunity to have the illustration side as a great hobby, I don’t have to deal with crappy deadlines or having to wait for a paycheck of something I finished two months ago. Now I have freedom, there’s no client that rejects it’s just me…and I approve!

You will see now that my style is more lose, I don’t have to follow any requirements and that makes me freakin’ happy.

I finally learned that there’s nothing wrong about having a day job, thanks to that income I can enjoy my art.

Thanks to everyone that still follows the blog and the Facebook page I was worried about sharing this, but it was time for me to do it.

Técnica - Technique

Meses atrás tuve que realizar una prueba de estilo, es difícil igualar la forma en que alguien más desarrolla los personajes pero esos son los retos que hacen al oficio interesante. Al terminar la ilustración me termino gustando mucho la técnica que use en photoshop, planeo volver a utilizarla cuando se presente la oportunidad.

Months ago I had to make some trial sketches, drawing some characters someone else developed. It's hard for me to work that way but those things are the ones that make the job more interesting. After finishing the piece I ended up really liking the photoshop technique I used, I'm planning to use it again when ever I can.

Misión - Mission

Algunas veces meses después de terminar un proyecto me llegan fotos como estas, en donde puedo observar el resultado de un equipo de trabajo que me ha permitido llegar a muchos niños y niñas en Guatemala ilustrando materiales con mensajes positivos. Es una satisfacción como ninguna. Ojalá tengo la oportunidad de seguir por mucho tiempo.

Sometimes months after finishing a project I get pictures like these ones, where I can visualize the result of a team work that has allowed me to illustrate materials with positive messages to thousands of children in Guatemala. There's a sense of satisfaction like no other. I only wish I can keep doing this for long while.

El primer post del año 2014, no mucho pasó en el 2013 relacionado con mis ilustraciones de temática indígena y eso fue una de las principales razones de mi preocupación. Ya hace más de un año que estoy viviendo en los Estados Unidos y según yo eso tendría que ver con que la demanda de ilustraciones con enfoque guatemalteco descendiera.

Pasaron semanas y ningún post se hizo presente ni aquí en ni en la página de Facebook en el último trimestre del 2013. Llegue a pensar que seria mejor dejar por un lado la temática y dedicarme al diseño gráfico en general.

Aunque sabía que mi motivación seguía ahí, cada dibujo que miro, cada ilustración que encuentro la chapinizo en mi cabeza, es algo que no puedo evitar.

Y después de muchos análisis me encuentro por casualidad yendo de blog en blog, con varios ilustradores latinoamericanos que viven en Estados Unidos pero promueven su cultura y ese pienso debe ser mi nuevo enfoque. Tengo a mi Guatemala lejos pero debo seguir buscando la forma de hacerla brillar de este lado del mapa sin esperar que la demanda venga de Guate.

Agradezco por su paciencia a los seguidores que siguen con la página, y espero poder en este 2014 brillar con colores Guatemaltecos. Un abrazo.

This is the first post of 2014 and I have to say that not much happened on 2013 regarding my Guatemalan illustrations and that was one of my biggest concerns. It’s been more than a year since I left Guatemala and I thought that would be the reason for the lack of projects

Weeks went by and I didn’t post anything on the last months of 2013, I even thought that it would be a nice idea to quit the Guatemalan style and just work in general graphic design.

Although I knew I still was having deep feelings towards illustrating Guatemalan topics, every illustration I see I flip into a Guatemalan style in my head. I can’t help it.

So finally after analyzing it a lot, I found these amazing Latin American illustrators on the web by blog hoping, and I read deep into their stories and find that even though they are living in the US they are promoting their culture and not waiting for the opportunity to come from the countries. It’s a way to shine outside your territory.

I want to say thank you to all the followers that are still on the Facebook page regardless on the lack of activity. Let’s shine with Guatemalan colors in 2014. Hugs.

It's a complete honor, to share with you that I was chosen to be a part of the project called "Dictionary of Iberoamerican Illustrators" I'm so proud to see my name under my country. I take this as a sign that I'm going in the right path, it feels so good to express what I love through my work.

Here is a nice tip I learned at Pinterest, making a mixing chart of your watercolors. Recently I had to change brands, I went for this 24 set TALENS brand, since I already had Ecolines, I thought this could be good too.

Les comparto un buen consejo que aprendí en Pinterest, hacer un cuadro de mezclas con acuarelas. Recientemente tuve que cambiar de marca de acuarelas, así que me decidí por este set de 24 colores marca TALENS, ya que había utilizado las tintas Ecoline de la misma marca.

I've painting with them for a while and they are turning out good. So here is a closeup of my chart. It's kind of tiring to do all the mixing, but it's so worth it. Next time you paint you can get an idea of what color you will get.

He estado pintando con ellas ya por un tiempo, y han salido buenas. Así que les muestro un acercamiento de mi cuadro de mezclas. Puede ser un poco tedioso hacerlo, pero vale la pena. Ya que la próxima vez sabrás que color obtendrás al mezclarlas.

Espero hayan tenido una Feliz Navidad, mientras el año llega a su fin, me preparo con nuevas metas, es por eso que el regalo que recibido este año son estos preciosos sets de crayones pastel.

I'm incorporating more techniques to my pieces, just for the fun of it. I had always seen illustration as a business, and many times I forget that it's fun to do. Here is a small piece I did just to try them out. I forgot what a great time one can have by getting our hands dirty. Here is the sketch and finish illustration. Hope you like them.

Estoy incorporando más técnicas para realizar mis ilustraciones, me parece que sería divertido. Siempre he visto la ilustración como un negocio y muchas veces olvido que también es alegre dibujar. Aquí les muestro una peque pieza que hice para probar los crayones. El sketch y la ilustración terminada. Espero les guste.

By the way, my husband still finds weird that I prefer crayons rather that clothes or shoes ;)

Por ahora los dejo con algo pequeño, ya que ando disfrutando de la época navideña. Éste es un boceto que hice con acuarelas sobre papel canson de 140lb el papel no me gusto tanto, tiene una textura extraña. Espero les guste el nuevo diseño del blog, estoy preparando nuevas cosas para el 2013.

El 7 de Noviembre del 2012 un terremoto azotó a mi bello país, así que desde la distancia envío un mensaje a todos los guatemaltecos a unirse para sacar adelante a las personas que se vieron afectadas.

Hasta que se me hizo, meses y meses pasaron hasta que pude carvar un sello usando el famoso block de speedball, mucho más fácil que el linóleo. El tema? símbolos del traje indígena...por supuesto :)

Finally! I could carve my own little stamp, using the famous speedball blocks, it´s so much easier than linoleum. My theme? ethnic symbols from the guatemalan indigenous costumes...of course :)

Es un gusto poder decir que los últimos meses tuve la dicha de trabajar en proyectos de temática étnica, me encantan. En éste proyecto en particular pude abarcar personajes de distintos continentes, mi parte favorita es hacer los trajes.

Hoy adquirí el audiolibro de Bobby Chiu "The Perfect Bait" en él, Bobby cuenta como ha ido creciendo en su conocimiento a lo largo de su carrera y compartiendo las formas de como lo ha hecho, así que me puse a reflexionar si yo de hecho había crecido en mis habilidades, y fue un gusto darme cuenta que sí. Aquí la prueba, en el 2006 realicé un proyecto para Visión Mundial Guatemala, ellos creyeron en mí y me contrataron. Ahora el observar esos trazos toscos y pobre construcción en el dibujo me hace pensar que con la práctica de otros 6 años algo he aprendido. Visión Mundial siguió creyendo en mi año tras año y gracias a ellos pude tener retos que ayudaron a mi técnica. Gracias

Today I bought Bobby Chiu´s audiobook called "The Perfect Bait" where he tells how he has improved his drawing skills through time, and sharing tips on how to do that. So that made me think if in fact I had grow in mines..I searched for some old drawings and found these. It was a project for World Vision Guatemala back in 2006, they believed in me and hired me and this is how it turned out. Now that I see all the crappy lines and poor construction in the characters I realized that in 6 years Ive learn more than I thought. Thanks to World Vision Guatemala who year after year believed in me, I got to challenge myself to become a better illustrator. Thank you!
