Allah, Most High, says:

وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ حَىٍّ ۖ

And We haveade from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?" (Sr, Al-Anbiya 21:30)

This Verse was understood by the earlier generations, and by people in our own time, and it will be understood by people in the future quite clearly: wateris the basis of life.
Secienific progress has shown us many details that confirm this concept. Water is the basis of all life, and all created begins from the virus cannot be seen exept with an electronic microscope to the entire plant and animal kingdoms could not exsist without water. But the ratio of water may differ; for example, the ratio of water in the bodies of desert plants and animals is very low, and the ratio of water in the bodies of marine plants and animals very high. But water is enssential, because water is the basis for all biological, metabic functions and chemical interactions inside sells. It is an exellent solvent and is essential for the transfer nutrients and waste to and from cell and tissues.
Water also possesses physical proerties that make it the basis for life. All liquid solutions, when they change from a liquid to a solid state, increase in density and become heaver, exept for water. Allah, the Exalted, has created in it this unique characteristic; when it reaches a temperature of 4 degrees Celcius, it size increases but its density decreases, so it becomes lighter. This is whay ice floats and travels around in the sea in frozen lakes. If it were heavy, it would sink and kill off the plant and animal life in these oceans. Life would not exist, and if there is no life in the water then undoubtedly there would be no life on dry land aither. Event the air that we breathe, after chemikal experiments on oxygen, in clouging tha which is emited by trees, has its origins in water and not in carbon dioxide, because in the emission
of trees there is oxygen that comesfrom water and oxygen that comes carbon dioxide. It is prved scientifically that even the oxygen in the air, which is more critical for life than water, ultimately comes from water, to

Scientists have noted the differences between the three categories of water (river, sea and estuary) with regard to the degree salinity or freshness, and they have found that most creatures that livee in the sea, river and estuary die if they are taken out of theirown environment. That which lives in the river cannot live sea or estuary, and so on.

Then they classfied the three environments (river, sea and estuary ) on the basis of the creatures that live in them, and they foundbthat the estuari region is regraded as a barrier that is exclusive to most of the creature that live in it, which cannot live anywhere but in an aquatic environment that has a certain leved of salinity or freshness, and they die if they go out of the estuary region.

In addition to that, the estuary region is regarded as a barrier that excludes most of the creatures that live in the sea and river, because these creatures will die if thgey enter this region, which is also due to the water pressure. The wonder is that the Qur' an described the estuary region in these terms and said "a complete partition". We can understand the world Hijr (partition) here in the light of modern studies which show that living creatures in the estuary region live in a narrow space and are preventedfrom leaving that space.

The estuary region is also described as being forbidden to othe living creatures which cannot enter it.

So the estuary region, according to the Qur'anic description, is A hijr that is specific to the creatures that live in it "forbidden" to the creatures that live outside of it

The estuary area is regarded as an area that is exclusive to the creatures that inhabit it and as an area that excludes creatures that live inthe river and sea. This what Allah, the Exalted, descrbies in Sr, Al-Furqan: "and He has set a barrier and a complete partition between them".

The second barrier is that which separates salty seas; it does not have that characteristic of preventing creatures from leaving or entering. This is what is referred to in Sr, Al-Rahman where Allah, Most High, s

Between them is a barrier which none nof them can transgress. Them which of the Blessings of your Lordwill you both (Jinn and Man) deny? Out of them both come out pearl and coral " ( sr. Al-Rahman ; 55:20-22)

The barrier is not described as " barrier and a complete partition"; hence, we find that most creatures can move between the two seas with complete ease. That is becase the difference in salinity levels is not so severe as to prevent them moving from one marine environment to another.

So the human mind stand amazed by miraculous wording of the Qur'an and this amazing system that Allah has created to protect the masses of water from spoiling each other's characteristic wen they meet.

And say [(O Muhammad S A W to these polytheisists and pagans]: All the praises and thangs be to Allah. He will show you His Aayat (Sins in yourselves, and in the universe or punishments), and you shall recognize them". Sr, Al-Naml; 27:29)

Scienific references

The Encyclopaedia Britanica says:

River estuaries are places where the river meets the sea,and they may also be described as place where the ratio o salt in sea water is reduced as it mixes with freshwater.

From a biological point of view, estuaries are more poductive than rivers and seas, because estuaries have a special and distinct kind of water cycle which retains plant nutrients and encaurages primary production. Because freshwater is lighter then salt water, this leads to the formation of a sparate layer that floats on the surfaceof the estuary.

On the boundary between the fresh and salt water, there is a certain level of mixing that is caused by the flow of freshwater above the salt water and because of the ebb and flow of the tide. Any additional mixing could occur from time to time because of high winds and internal waves that are generated along the interface between the fresh and salt water.

The Encyclopaedia mentions elsewhere:
Salitnity in the oceans is fixed but it fluctuates along the coastwhere salt water meets freshwater at the mouths of streams and rivers. This brackish water forms a barrier that separates sea creatures from river creatures.

The miraculous aspect

The miraculous aspect in these Qur' nic Verses is that they point to the precence of barrier between salty seas that alow slow mixing, whereby the water that moves from one sea to another loses its characteristics and acuires the characteristics of the sea it enters. They also indicate that seas and rivers meet and mix , although there is a barrier that prevents complete mixing between them. This something that was discovered by oceanographers in the twentieth century about estuaries where rives meet the sea, and the marine barriers betwen two different seas. And Allah knows best and is Most Wise.

Modern stuies have discovered that even though the seas appear to be all the same, there are several differences in their water mass. In regions where two seas meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier separates the two seas that each sea has its own temperature, salinity and density. (asas 'Ilm Al- Bihar, asas ' Davies, p. 92-93).
The water of the warm, saline Mediterranean Sea has a barrier where it enters the Atlantc Ocean which is colder and less dense. There are similiar barrier between the waters of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. What modern science discovered in the last century was clearly stated in the Qur'an Sr, Al-Rahman, where Allah, the Exalted, says:

مَرَجَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ ﴿٩١﴾
"He has letloose the two seas (the salt and freshwater) meeting together."

The Qur'an speaks of two different salty seas meeting. The evidence for that is what was stated by the Scholars of Trafseer, which is that when the Qur'an uses the word Al-Bahr without specifying, it refers to the salty sea. Moreover, if the two seas were similiar to one another, they would be a single sea. This differentiation between them in the Qur'anic wording strongly indicates that there is a difference between them, even though both are salty.

Another indication referred to in the Qur'an Verse is that it says of the two seas the pearl and coral come out of them. Scientists have discovered that pearl and coral can only be found in salty sea; they do not exist in freshwater or in where freshwater with the sea.

In 1942, scientific studies of the sea revealed the existence of a water barrier that separates the two seas the meet. This is what is indicated in the verse: " Between them is a barrier which none of them can transgress'' (Sr, Al-Rahman; 55:20). The idea of the barrier is reinforced in the verse: "....and has set a barrier between the two seas" (Sr, Al-Naml; 29:61). The phrase "none can transgress" means that one of the two seas cannot prevail over the other and change its characteristics. It also became clear to scientists that there is some mixing between the salty seas despite the existence of this barrier, and this is what is indicated by the Qur'an.

Maraja means mixing, or coming and going and cofused movenmen. As stated earlier, this mixing is slow that the amount which moves from one sea to another takes on the characteristics of the sea to which it moves, without afecting those characteristics, because these barries protect the distinguishing characteristics of the each sea, such as its density salinity living creatures, temperature and ratio of oxygen in the water.

Barrier between freshwater river and salty sea

Fr ansient times man hes seen that rivers empty into the sea, and that the river water gradually loses its distinctive color and taste the deeper it follows into the sea.

But with the advances in scientifific discovery, scientists have studied samples of water where rivers meet the sea , and they have measured the salinity levels, temperature and density with precise intrument, and collected samples of the living creature that inhabit these regions, then they classified them and defined the areas in which they live in and studied their ability to live in both river and sea habitats, then they concluded that water may be divided into three types:

River water, which is very fresh

Sea water, which is very salty

Estuary water, which is a mixture of fresh and salty, which separates the river and the sea. The salinity increases the closer one gets to the sea, and the freshness increases the closer one gets to the river.

This is what was stated by the Qur'an when it described the two "sea" ( the salty freshwater ) as having attributes that scientists did not discover until last century.

It described river water as being "palatable and sweet"; palatable water is water that is not salty and sweet water is tha which is very fresh. This description (sweet) exludes estuary water, which may be described as being fresh but not very fresh.

Sea water is described by the Qur'an as being " salty and bitter ''. Salty water is sea water and bitter water is very salty. Hence, neither of these two descriptions can be applied to estuary water.

Estuary water is a mixtureof palatable, sweet river water and salty, bitter sea water. The Qur'an describes it as "He has let loose the two seas", sea meaning the river and the sea.

Water barrier Surrounding the estuary region

Scientists have also noticed the existance of a water barrierthat surounsthe estuaryregion and potects its distinguishing feature. The river waterand sea water do not meet dierctly in the estuary region, despite the movenment of tides. This is due to the the presence of this waterbarrier that surounds the estuary region and permently separates them.

Because there is no direct meeting between the river and sea, scientists noticed that there is gradual mixing even though ther is there is a separates area of estuary water, and the water barrier that surounds it. The Qur'an points to the existence of this barrier when it says; ".. and He has set a barrier.... between them". The barrier, as the scholars of exegesis said, is a barrier that prevents each of them corrupting the other. Mujahid said, "They meet but they do not mix."

The starfih is a marine marine animal that i shaped like a star. Starfish vary in size and color and are found in all seas. The body of this creature is formed of a disk in the midle of which is an opening for the mouth, and from which stem five arms that are similar in length and size. The upper surface is darker than the lower . In its body it has a number of solid plates from which snipes projec, on which plants and dirt often caught. Hence we fined that the bodi of this animal is equipped with small organs like tweezers with which it keeps its body clean by cicking up the things that get caught on its spines. The star fish feeds on believe molluscs which are know as shellfish. It consumes them in a remarcable manner which is itself a sign ofthe existence of Allah, Most High, and His Mercy which encompesses all of creation. Whan the starfish finds a shellfish, it places it among its arm and bends its body over it. It attaches its arms to the shell of the mollusc, then the arms pull in opposite directions until the shell opens. The sterfish is patient and tough; if it comes across a mollusc with a strong shell it keep pulling for a long time until the mollusc loses its strength and opens its shell, as if defeated by its persistence and patience.
When the shell opens, the mollusc extends (everts) part of its stomach out throgh its mouth and encircles the mollusc, then it starts to suck the contents until it ingests them all.

Coral

Coral is one of the wonders of the creation of Allah, the Exalted, which lives in the sea at depths between five and 300 metters, where the caral attaches inself by its lower part to a rock or plant. The mouth
opening at the top of its body is the highest part of its body, and surrounded by a number of tentcles which it uses in order to feed. When these tentacles touch any prey - which is often small creatures suchas shrimp - it is paralyzed immediately and sticks to them, then the tentacles retact to ward the mouth, drawing the prey into a narrow channel like the oesophagus in humans.

One of the signs of the might of the Creator is that the coral multiplies in an asexual manner, by releasing spawn, and the resulting polyps remain united with the individuals that produced them, thus forming the coral "tree" which has avery thick stem, narrowing down greatly toward the branches. The coral tree is up to thirty centimeters long. The living colonies of coral come in various colors such as yellow, orange, red, pink, blue, emerald green or light gray. Red coral is the is solid core that is left after the living parts of the animal die. The stony skeletons form huge colonies or reefs. It used to be thought that these colonies were the summits of underwater volcanoes.

Most of these colonies or reefs are found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, where they sometimes rise above the surface of the water and become big enough to be colnized and inhabited by people. Or they may remain hidden beneath the suface of the water where they pose a danger to dhipping.

One of these colonies is the chain of coral rock that is known as the Great Barrier Reef which
lies northeast of Autralia. This chain is 1,300 mils long and 50 mils wide, and it is formed of these tiny living creature!

Pearl

The pearl oyster my be the most amazing creature in the ocean. It goes down to the depths where it remains inside a shell made of a hand subtance that protects it from danger, and it differs from other living beings in its structure and the way it lives, It is a fine net like a fishing net, wonderfully woben. It acts like a sieva which allow water, air and food to enterit, but keeps out sand and pabbles and so on, Beneath the net are the mouths of the animal, and each mouth has four lips. If a grain of sand or piece of pabble enters it, or a harmful animal enters the shell by force, the oyster hastens to excrete a viscoussubtance that cover it and then solidifies, forming a pearl. The size of pearls varies depending on the grain of sand. This is one of many thousand and millionsof types of primitve sea creatures, and Allah, the Exalted, knows best. (Allah Wal-'Ilm Al-Hadith by ' Abd Al-RazzaqNawfal).

Most of the seas and oceans are covered with thick culumus clouds that block a great proportion of sunlight, as is sown by most satellite pictures. these clouds reflect back a lot of the sun's rays and keep out a lot of its light. Of the light that remainis, the ater reflect back a great deal of it, and absorbs the rest, so that the light decreases the deeper you go in the water. In his book Marines Optict, Gerloff says that the level of light in the water of the ocean is reducedat a depth of 35 metters to ten percent of its level at the surface, and to 1 percent at a depth of 85 metetes, and to 0,1 percent at a depth of 135 metters, and to 0,01 percent at a depth 190 metters. After a depth of 1,000 metters the darkness grows so deep that there is virtually no visibiliti and if a man stretches out his hand, he would not be able to se it.

These astonishing scientific facts are mentioned in the Holy Qur'an which came down to Arabs in the desrts who did not know how to swim or sail in the sea an oceans. In the fortieth Verse of Al-Noor, Allah Most High, says:

"Or the (state of a disbeliever) is like the darkness in a vast deep sea, overwhelmed with waves topped by waves, topped by dark clouds, (layer of) darkness upon darkness: if a man stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it! And he for whom Allah has not appointed light, for him there ia no light."

This Verse is in accordance with these facts, as they affirm that the deepsea is mostly covered by clouds. Tte word "like the darknes" indicates that there is no vision, and that is also supported by the word "in the vast deef sea (fi bahrin lujjiy)". Lujjiy refert to that which is very dark and very deep. The fish at that depth have no eyes; rather they are uquipped with bioluminescence, as montioned in the Encyclopaedia Britanica. This what is mean when Allah, the Almighty, says: '' And he for whom Allah hes notappointed light, for him there is no light." These fish are able to find their way by means of light-producimg fleshy growts that Allah, the Exalted, has created in their bodies. The sea floor slopes and change colour gradually, fading to blue before dissappearig altogether as the depth increases. As the light spectrum decreases as the depth increases, new type of darkness develop which prevent seeing some colour of the spectrum.

Hence, Allah, the Exalted, says ''Zulumaat" (usually translated as"darkness" although it is a plural form, e.i., darkness), and He did not say "Zulmah" (singular). He said: " (layer of) darkness upon darkness" (lit. darknesses one above another).

Dr. Williams Hay notedthat fisherman are able to use the differences in the color of water to determine the depth with remarcable precision. As mentioned earlier, nowadays the simplest scientific tool that is used to measure the depth to which light penetrates the ocean waters Secchi disk, which it becomes imposible to see it, which is taken as a set point.

Movenment of internal waves

The image of layers of waves, one above anothe, on the surface of the sea, is breath- taking. This phenomenon is whell-know to sailors and fisherman, but the strangest thing which man discovered only a hundred years ago is that there are internal waves in the depths of the oceans, which appear along the interface between two layers of water that differ from one another in term of density, presure, temperature, tide and wind effect, as mentioned in the Encyclopaedia Britanica.

The difference in density in the open ocean are les than those in costal areas where freshwater flow intio the sea from rivers, steamsand so on. THe interface that separates the different densites is formed at the main point of temperature decline, so it separates the water of the warm surface layer from the water of the depth which is cold.

The thickness of the warm layer may from a few dozen to hundreds of meters.

The waves that are formed on this interface between the two layers of water that differ in density, and temperature are similar to the waves on the surface, but they cannot be seen easily from the surface. The formation of these waves consumes a great deal of energy which could be used to push a ship forward. We find that some ships which sail on these waters suddenly lose the ability to move forward whend they enter what is know as stsgnsnt water, which was discovered and studied by the Swedist scientist Dr. Ekman at the begining of the twentieth century, as mentioned in the Encyclopaedia Britanica.

What is meant is that the waves are created in the vast deep sea, and this is what was confirmed by oceanogrphers when they said that the deep sea is deffirent from the portion of the sea that is closer to the surface, and that the internal waves only form in the interface between the upper portion of the sea and the deep sea. these internal waves are of different types, the most important of which are those that form in straits and channel, for example in the Straits of Gibraltar, where the incoming flow of the strong surface current and the outgoing flow of the lower current cause internal waves to enter from the Atlanic Oceanto the Strait, as if they are broken waves, like the foamy waves that roll up onto the shore, which cause a great deal of internal tunoil. Thus there are clouds and there are surface wafes and internal waves. When the rays of sunlight strike, the clouds absorbs some of them and that is one kind of shade or darkness. When the rays strike the surface waves, the wafes also reflect some of the light, and when the rays strike the internal waes more of the light is reflected back. This is another kind of shade or darknes. Then the desity of the deep water absorbs what is left of the sun's rays at a depth of 1,000 metters, and there is total darkness in this vast deep sea, what Holy Qur'an calls'' (layers of) darkness upon darknes".

Scientific references

The molecules of water and salt, organic material and microscopic creature all come together to cause a reduction in the intencity of the available solar rays as depth increases. In general, each species of fish of the order Osteichthys exists in the deepest depths of the oceans, usually at a depth of more than 600 metters and even as deep as 2,700 metters. Between 2.000 and 9,000 feet there are more than one dozn species which include sea fish species that are characterized by a big mouth and light-producing fleshy growth on one or more parts of the body which are used to attract prey or potential mates. These and other strange features which are characteristic of deep sea fish show developmental adaptation to the intense pressure pressure and cold, and especially the darkness, of their environment.

Its also says:

There exist waves at the internal interfaces of the ocean, and these interfaces result from sudden changes in density as the depth increases; the waves which result from that are called internal vaves. The way in which these internalwaves come about is due to tidal effectsor the effect of winds and chages in pressure in some cases. A ship my also cause internal waves if the upper layer of water is not deep or is low in salinity. Ekma came out with a theory, in a demonstration of this empirical talens, concerning what is known as dead or stagnant water, which causes ships to become immobile, shifting about in place because of a layer of freshwater that appears on top of the sea due to melting snow.

The miraculous aspect

The miraculous aspect of this Qur'nic verce is that it clearly states that the exist "darkness" in the depths of the sea that are piled one on top of the other, and there are internal waves in the deep sea and oceans, and that these seas and oceans are usualy convered bi thick clouds which blogk a considerable amount of the sun's rays. This is that was discoveed by scientific studies at the end of the nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, modern sciece discovered a strange phenomenon that only occurs in the "vast deep sea" , which is that when light reaces a depth of five metters, the red color disappears. When it reaces 30 metters, a new type of darkness emerges in which orange light disappears. at a depth of 50 metters, yellow light begins to disappear. At a depth of 100 metters, green light disappears.

But when He bring you safe to land you turn away (from Him). And man is ever unggrateful."

(Sr, Al-Isra;17:67)

The water that fills the ocean and seas, lakes and rivers, atreams and channel, all comes from one source: with atoms of oxygen, which together form water.

It flow constantly, never changing, bringing life. but does water always brind life? No. Sometimes water is the strongest and harshest force on earth; it sweeps away everything that stand in its path no matter what it is. It causes disaster and floods in which rocka and solid objects are distroyed. Hence, we see in the ocean such beauty and depth, such awe-inspiring force that could be a cause for potential danger and fear.

Pheraps the most amazing phenomenon occuring at sea are the storm and hurricanes which last for three or four days, nonstop, with waves as high as mountains and throughs as deep as valleys, with waves seemingly reaching up to the sky with no land or horizon to be seen.

Waves which are usually 25 feet high may reach a height of 130 feet during the storm. If you realize that a foot-high wave has a destructive force of six thousand pound, you can imazine the exent of the destruction that can be wrought by these waves.

According to recoads, in 1872 a strong wave in Scotland dislodged an iron anchor weighing 1,700,000 lbs, and another wave carried a rock weighing 175 thousand pound to a height of 100 feet! In 1737, in port of Babjok there was a storm which killed 300,000 people and wrecked 20,000 ships.

Water consists of particles that are firmly attached to one another .A molecule of water consists of one atom of oxygen attached to Two atoms of hydrogen. The atoms joined by chemical bond which ar forces of attraction tha hold atom together. It is the bond between atoms that give molecules different properties than the atom they are composed of. The oxygen-hydrogen bond is pola one end of molecule is partially negative whilst the two hydrogen atom become positive.

The molecules of water are attracted to one another, with the slightly posive hidrogen atoms attracted to the negative ''ends" (oxygen atoms), of water molecules. The intermoleculer attraction is termed "hydrogen bonding" In the case of water the effect on the physical properties of water are quite astounding, the boiling, pont of water, for example, is very much greater than would be the case if such bonding did not exist. Thus fact alone should make human beings and other living creatures grateful for unique physical and chemical and chemical properties of water.

Original of Water

Ther are number of theories which explain the origin of water on Eart. These theories include the following.

Water is of extraterrestrial origin

In brief, this theory says that water come to Earth from mouter space: there are rays which flow continuously throughout the universe, consisting of particles that are endowed with great energy and containing nuclei of hydrogen atoms, i.e. protons. As the Earth rotated on its axis and around the sun these protons penetrated Earth's atmosphere and acquired the necessary electrons, thus forming hydrogen atoms which intracted directly with oxygen and formed molecules at a high altitude under verylow temperatures. These condensed into particles of space dust, forming silver clouds. Scientists also believe that the water which was formed in this way during the long period of the Earth's formation was sufficient to fill all the oceans on Earth.

In the Holy Qur'an, Allah , The Exalted, mentions this phenomenon, as He says that He sent down water from heavens. He mentions water without a difinite article so as to indicate that water in general come down from heavens. This appears in more than twenty Verses, including the following:

"Who has made the Earth a resting place for you, and the sky as a canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky and brought fort therewith fruits as a provision for you. then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).''(Sr, Al-Baqarah, 2:22)

Modern images taken of the seas and oceans prove that the world's seas are not all the same in composition. Rather, they vary in temperture, salitiny, density and oxygen content. In images taken by satellites each sea appears to be of a different color from the other. Some appear dark blue, some appear black and appear yellow. This is due to the difference in temperature of each sea or ocean. In image taken from satellites using thernal imaging techniques, there also appear a thin white line separating one sea or ocean from another. This is what is called Barzakh (barrier)

Allah, the Exalted, says: ( Sr,Al-Rahman (55: 19-20)
