Favorites From The Competition Last Week

EcoSmart Live offers web-based control of Radion LED, accessible by Mac, PC, iOS etc
Reefbuilders’ Jake Adams has been bring the news of what’s being announced in Germany this week at Interzoo, and the future update to Ecotech Marine’s EcoSmart software for the Radion XR30w really caught my eye. This new update will finally allow control of these LED lights from sources other than Windows-based machines such as Mac, Linux and Droid. This new Radion update is also going to allow remote control of the lights via wireless communications though details are still sparse.

Our Opinion of Fish Tank Kings’ First Episode
Brandon Klaus of AquaNerd was the first this week to comment on National Geographic’s new show Fish Tank Kings. I didn’t get a chance to view the show yet, but this article fills in the gaps nicely. According to Klaus, Living Color Aquariums takes the show very seriously when it comes to the health of the animals and shows true appreciation for the opportunity to enter our living rooms. There was some colorful language that may turn some viewers away, but F**K, who doesn’t use the occasional bad word. Lucky for little ears, it was of course censored.

LEDs Anyone?
Reefs made a great find this week with a video of Panasonic showing off their LED technology by filling a river with bright efficient lighting. According to Josh Saul, over 100,000 small, solar-powered, floating lights were released to cruise the river and then later recaptured. Follow the link above to check it out.

Treating type 2 diabetes with cone snail venom?
Advanced Aquarist is always the scientist of the group, and this week they found interesting information regarding a possible type 2 diabetes treatment that uses cone snail venom. This, usually extremely dangerous venom, has been found to change the way the pancreas releases insulin which could help in treating the most common form of diabetes. As Shane Graber of Advanced Aquarist put forth, “Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes making up 90% of the cases diagnosed each year in adults. “

aCone 1.5 and aCone 3.0 Unveiled by AquaMedic

Naturally, this week at Interzoo, in Germany, AquaMedic is there to unveil some the new products on their home turf. The aCone 1.5 and aCone 3.0 are two new protein skimmers unveiled this week with included ECO Runner pumps for silent and smooth operation.

The AquaMedic aCone 1.5 will be rated for about 400 gallons, and the 3.0 will be rated for about 650 gallons. Each will come with its own matched version of the ECO Runner venturi pumps with the aCone 1.5 including a ECO Runner 3700 and the aCone 3.0 coming with an ECO Runner 8000.

No prices are apparent at this point, but I’m sure AquaMedic will remedy that very soon.

Prodibio Lanches Aquarium Cure Program

This week at Interzoo, Prodibio is launching a new product for the treatment of fish ailments that aims to take the complications out of fish disease care. The Aquarium Cure Program is a product designed to treat many common diseases like ich, parasites or bacterial problems. If affective, this should take a lot of the work out of selecting the correct medication for a given problem, and Proibio even includes a means to restock bacterial levels in the aquarium after treatment is complete.

Prodibio is reaching for the stars with their, one product cures all, Aquarium Cure Program, and it’s easy to be skeptical at this point. This would indeed be a huge feet, but many past products started with huge goals that they reached against all odds. This will definitely be one to watch in the future.

Interzoo is held every two years and draws a massive amount of pet related displays including tons of reef aquarium supply companies. Until now we had no presence there to check out all the amazing new products, but our correspondent is now on site and sending us images of all the fun.

EcoTech Marine EcoSmart Live Controls Coming to a Device Near You

As you can tell this week is a busy one for the reef aquarium industry, with Interzoo going on, and EcoTech Marine is not stopping at their Radion Lens upgrade. This week they also announced a new EcoSmart software update that will make it possible to control their Radion XR30w LED lights as well as Vortech pumps from devices other than Windows computers and even do so through wireless communications.

Details are still sparse on exactly how this EcoSmart update is going to make the Radion more accessible to users, but it is already known that it open up controls to Mac, Linux, iOS and Android users. It’s also known that it will open up some kind of wireless cloud control, but it’s still uncertain to how this will have to be set up. The update is rumored to be coming available toward the end of June.
