KEM MARIN RANDAU 2011-SIRI 1

Assalamualaikum w.b.t.

Buat pertama kalinya persatuan teknologi marin telah mengadakan satu kem sebagai aktiviti pembukaan semester baru ini.Kem ini dinamakan sebagai KEM MARIN RANDAU yang diadakan pada 22 jan hingga 23 jan di Taman Negeri Perlis.Hanya part 1 hingga part 5 sahaja yang terlibat dalam kem ini.Part 6 terpaksa dikecualikan kerana mereka perlu menumpukan sepenuh perhatian terhadap projek tahun akhir mereka.Objektif utama kem ini adalah untuk memupuk semangat kerjasama antara semua part.Selain itu,ia dapat mengeratkan lagi silaturahim antara junior dan senior.

Tepat jam 8.oo pagi,semua pelajar telah bergerak dari arau dengan menaiki 3 buah bas yang disewa khas dari syarikat BINTONG.Perjalanan memakan masa selama 1 jam 30 minit.Namun begitu,semua pelajar dikehendaki menaiki van-van yang disewa untuk ke Taman Negeri Perlis tersebut.Hal ini kerana bas-bas yang disewa itu tidak mampu untuk melalu jalan yang penuh dengan selekoh tajam.Oleh itu,semua pelajar terpaksa menunggu giliran menaiki van kerana hanya dua buah van sahaja disewa khas untuk ke taman negeri tersebut.

Pelbagai aktiviti telah dijalankan sepanjang kem tersebut diadakan.Antara aktiviti yang diadakan adalah caving,survival,LDK dan night walk.Semua aktiviti yang dijalankan ini sangat mencabar buat pelajar-pelajar marin teknologi.Mana taknya,semua pelajar-pelajar marin lebih tertumpu pada laut tetapi kali ini mereka semua terpaksa meredah hutan dan juga masuk ke dalam gua yang sangat gelap.Aktiviti ini sangat mencabar fizikal dan mental para peserta.Para peserta dibahagikan kepada enam kumpulan dan setipa kumpulan mempunyai fasilitator.Fasilitator terdiri daripada pelajar dari part 4.Setiap fasilitator mempunyai tugas tersendiri untuk membimbing para peserta.

Aktiviti caving dan night walk adalah aktiviti yang sangat mencabar bagi para peserta.Hal ini kerana para peserta diuji dari segi mental dan juga fizikal.Aktiviti caving memerlukan tenaga yang banyak untuk meredah hutan dan juga masuk ke dalam gua yang sangat gelap.Para peserta diminta membawa torchlight semasa memasuki gua tersebut.Gua itu dinamakan sebagai Gua Burma.Kemudian,para peserta perlu menuruni curam yang tinggi dengan menggunakan tali yang disediakan.Selepas itu,para peserta terpaksa meredah air yang terdapat di sepanjang jalan di dalam gua tersebut.

Aktivit malam pula,para peserta perlu memasuki hutan bersama dengan ahli kumpulan masing-masing tanpa membawa sebarang torchlight.Mereka perlu memasuki hutan dalam keadaan yang gelap dan perlu mencari jalan keluar.Ahamdulila.Semua peserta telah berjaya menjumpai jalan keluar dan semua peserta selamat sampai ke tempat asal tanpa sebarang masalah.Dari aktiviti,ia dapat memupuk semangat kerjasama antara satu sama lain selain dapat menguatkan lagi mental dan fizikal mereka.

Pada keesokan harinya,semua peserta menjalani PT pagi iaitu jogging pada waktu pagi.Semua peserta bersemangat menjayakan aktiviti pada pagi itu.Selepas itu,mereka menjalankan aktivit dalam berkumpulan.Selesai sahaja aktivit itu,para peserta diminta mengemas khemah masing dan bersiap sedia untuk pulang ke arau.Tepat jam 12.30 tengah hari,semua peserta telah mengosongkan tapak perkhemahan tersebut dan berjalan kaki ke tempat menunggu van.Diharapkan agar kem seperti ini akan terus dijalankan pada semester yang akan datang agar semua pelajar marin teknologi dapat memupuk semangat kerjasama.

BP Makes "Giant" Oil Find in Gulf of Mexico

LONDON (Reuters) - Oil major BP Plc said it has made an oil discovery in the Gulf of Mexico, which analysts believe could contain over 1 billion barrels of recoverable reserves, reaffirming the Gulf's strategic importance to the industry.

BP said in a statement on Wednesday that it had made the "giant" find at its Tiber Prospect in the Keathley Canyon block 102, by drilling one of the deepest wells ever sunk by the industry.

Further appraisal will be required to ascertain the size of volumes of oil present, but a spokesman said the find should be bigger than its Kaskida discovery which has over 3 billion barrels of oil in place.

Estimates of recoverable reserves range from around 20 percent of oil in place.

"Assuming reserves in place of 4 billion barrels and a 35 percent recovery rate, BP's proven reserves .. would rise by 868 million barrels -- equivalent to 4.8 percent of the group's 18.14 billion barrels of proven reserves," Aymeric De-Villaret, oil analyst at Societe Generale said in a research note.

BP, the biggest oil producer in the U.S. and biggest leaseholder in the Gulf of Mexico, has a 62 percent working interest in the block, while Brazilian state-controlled Petrobras owns 20 percent and U.S. oil major ConocoPhillips owns 18 percent.

Iain Armstrong, analyst at Brewin Dolphin, said the discovery may have implications for long-term oil prices.

"It will ease concerns about peak oil because it shows there is life left in these mature areas," he said, adding that it could be the second half of the next decade before the find is producing.

The discovery also bodes well for other exploration in that part of the Gulf of Mexico, including at Royal Dutch Shell's nearby Great White field, Jason Kenny, oil analyst at ING in Edinburgh, said.

BP shares, which had been trading slightly down ahead of the statement, closed up 4.3 percent at 541 pence, outperforming a 1.75 percent rise in the DJ Stoxx European oil and gas sector index.

The Gulf of Mexico has become increasingly important to Western oil majors as oil rich-countries such as Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Russia reserve their richest fields to be developed by their state-owned oil companies.

The Gulf is especially attractive because it offers high profit margins, due to relatively low taxation compared to countries such as Russia and Nigeria, and because of the low political risk.

As nearer-shore discoveries dry up, companies have pushed further out to sea, which has forced them to develop new technologies to detect and extract the oil.

The prospects for massive discoveries in the deep water of the Gulf of Mexico is also good news for U.S. politicians' ambitions to reduce the country's reliance on imported oil, although oil executives doubt the U.S. is capable of becoming self sufficient in oil.

New Species of Worms Release 'Bombs'

WASHINGTON – Thousands of feet beneath the sea live worms that can cast off green glowing body parts, a move scientists think may be a defensive effort to confuse attackers. Researchers have dubbed the newly discovered critters "green bombers."

The seven new species of worms were found by a team led by Karen Osborn of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. They report on the worms in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

"We found a whole new group of fairly large, extraordinary animals that we never knew anything about before," Osborn said in a statement. "These are not rare animals. Often when we see them they number in the hundreds. What's unique is that their habitat is really hard to sample."

Ranging in size from three-fourths of an inch to nearly four inches, the worms live at depths of 5,900 feet to more than 12,000 feet and were discovered by remotely operated submarines in both the northeast and western Pacific Ocean.

"They have a very strange way of using bioluminescence," Osborn explained in a briefing.

They have appendages, some round, others oval or long, which they release when they are disturbed, she said. Once release the appendage, it glows bright green.

"They drop one or two at a time and if you keep harassing them they will keep dropping them," she said, adding that the worms are able to regenerate the body parts.

It's the first time this has been seen in swimming worms, she said, although some brittle stars and some squids will let an arm drop off if attacked.

"We're not sure who their predators are," added Osborn, but she noted that fish prey on other types of swimming worms.

The closest relative to the newly found creatures are worms that burrow in the sea floor, Osborn said, "at some point they moved up into the water."

The first of the new species has been given the scientific name Swima bombiviridis.

The discovery emphasizes how little is known about life in the deep oceans, the researchers wrote.

The research was funded by the Scripps Institution, University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellowship, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and the National Geographic Society.

Influenza A ( H1N1 )

Is an acute respiratory infection caused by Influenza A virus (H1N1 subtype). It is spreading very fast to several countries including Malaysia as a result of the appearance of new form of Influenza A virus ( novel ) which is due to genetic mutation processes. Therefore, everyone is at risk once exposed to this virus due to absence of immunity in human body. It also considered as contagious diseases which can be transmitted from human to human.

According to World Health Organisation ( WHO ), these Influenza A ( H1N1 ) outbreak did occurred in 1918 which causing death to more than 50 millions peoples worldwide. Till 30th June 2009, there are 71076 reported cases in 116 countries which result in 311 deaths.

ROUTE OF INFECTION

This communicable diseases can be spread through :

Direct contact with infected person ( via cough droplet or sneeze )
Surfaces contaminated with Influenza A viruses ( H1N1 )

SYMPTOMS OF INFLUENZA A ( H1N1 )

High fever ( > 38 * C )
Cough
Sore throat
Difficulty in breathing
Bodyache / myalgia

SUSPECTED CASES

If YOU have the above symptoms

AND

a. Have direct contact with Influenza A ( H1N1 ) confirmed cases such as boarding with the same car / aircraft or staying in the same house

b. recent ( within a week ) travel / visit to the areas which posses Influenza A ( H1N1 ) cases.

YOU are advised to seek immediate treatment at any government hospital

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Please kindly take note of these measures :

Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Do practice cough ettiquette accordingly
Wash your hands with soap and adequate water after cough / sneeze or touching any polluted / contaminated surface
Proper housekeeping
